- 0:00People protect what they love, and ocean conservation
- 0:03really starts with connection.
- 0:04That's what we're gonna be focusing on today's episode of the How
- 0:06to Protect the Ocean podcast 'cause this is Oceans Day, folks.
- 0:10It is Oceans Day.
- 0:11It's a day where we take the time to celebrate this beautiful
- 0:16blue planet that we have.
- 0:17Over 71% of the ocean covers this planet.
- 0:21It provides oxygen for every second breath that we take.
- 0:25And it's time that we reflect on that and what the ocean provides us, not
- 0:30only from a resource perspective, but also from just a beauty perspective
- 0:35and a cultural perspective.
- 0:36I think it's something that we forget a lot of the times, whether it be the ocean,
- 0:40whether it be lakes, whether it be rivers.
- 0:42I think it's time that we start to really value what we do in and around the ocean,
- 0:48and really start to talk about that and remember that when we're actually working
- 0:51in and around the ocean when we're talking about industries and things like that.
- 0:55So we're gonna talk about that on today's episode 'cause this is the How
- 0:58to Protect the Ocean podcast, where you get your weekday ocean news update.
- 1:02If you are listening to this on your favorite podcast app and
- 1:04you haven't followed the show yet, please follow this show.
- 1:07It helps us get to the top, to the top of the charts in Apple
- 1:12Podcasts as well as Spotify.
- 1:13It just helps us get there so we can get in front of more people,
- 1:16and people can find a resource.
- 1:18That's what I want to do with this podcast, is get people to find a resource
- 1:23for the ocean where they can learn and they can find out how they can protect
- 1:26the ocean better in their daily lives.
- 1:29So let's get into it 'cause, like, here's the thing, is I always love Oceans Day,
- 1:34but every day is Oceans Day for me.
- 1:35We talk about it literally five days a week.
- 1:37And we think about the ocean each and every day.
- 1:40Not everybody does.
- 1:41You may not, and that's fine.
- 1:42It doesn't really matter.
- 1:43The fact is I used to hate Oceans Day in a way because it was just like only one day.
- 1:47People only look at it for one day.
- 1:49And then it turned into an Oceans Week 'cause there were events all week in
- 1:52certain spots like Washington, DC, and Toronto and all over the place.
- 1:55And then of course they have, like, Climate Week before that here in Toronto.
- 1:58Although we don't really talk a lot about the oceans, unfortunately,
- 2:01when we talk about climate, which is a thing that we need to do more.
- 2:04Which is why people should listen to this episode more, this show,
- 2:06especially this episode because we're talking about Oceans Day.
- 2:10And you know, like, let's be honest, I saw a post on LinkedIn.
- 2:12Unfortunately, I can't remember who did it, but it was a friend of mine who
- 2:14said, "A lot of the times we focus in on what the ocean can do as a resource."
- 2:21What can it give us?
- 2:22Can it give us critical minerals?
- 2:24Can it give us power?
- 2:26Can it give us fish, like food?
- 2:28Can it give us security?
- 2:30A lot of the times we forget to talk about the cultural
- 2:34ties that we have to the ocean.
- 2:36There are a lot of coastal communities.
- 2:37I mean, 60% of the people on this planet live along coastlines.
- 2:41There is more than just using it as a resource, is that what it provides us.
- 2:46It provides people with culture, provides it, you know, they're in their
- 2:49stories from a religious aspect and a cultural aspect and historical aspect,
- 2:54is how we discovered different places on the planet was through the water.
- 2:59It was how we discovered new medications.
- 3:01I know that's kind of acting as a resource, but the exploration and the
- 3:04beauty is the reason why we go to the beach on a vacation, because we want to
- 3:09go and just enjoy the calm blue water,
- 3:13or the calm, productive waters of the ocean.
- 3:17Whether you're in the tropics or whether you're in temperate
- 3:20or whether you're in the Arctic environments, you can enjoy the ocean.
- 3:23One thing that I'm doing after I record this is I'm getting ready
- 3:26to go to a trip to Halifax for a conference for my work at Pisces Oceans.
- 3:30And I'm looking forward to it.
- 3:31It's been a while since I've been to Halifax.
- 3:32My wife and I worked there when we were younger, over 20 years ago, and I did my
- 3:38master's out there at Acadia University.
- 3:39And during that time, I got to live by the ocean for like, it was two years.
- 3:43It wasn't a lot of time in my life, but I got to live.
- 3:45It was a dream of mine to live by the ocean.
- 3:47And we would go down to the harbor front, and we would look at just the ocean.
- 3:52We would look in, we'd see the jellyfish that were around there.
- 3:54Let's be honest, like it's a pretty big port.
- 3:56The water quality has something to said, but we got to see a
- 3:59lot of cool things in that.
- 4:00We got to see whales come into the harbor.
- 4:03We got to see dolphins come into the harbor over that time.
- 4:06We got to go on the harbor, like on these boats, these sailboats that would
- 4:10take you around and do a harbor tour.
- 4:12And it was really invigorating.
- 4:14It was one of those things where you're just like, "I get to just sit
- 4:17here with my ice cream from Cowies."
- 4:19That's if you know Halifax, you know Cowies.
- 4:22And share with at the time was my girlfriend, but was gonna be my
- 4:25wife, and now is wife of 21 years.
- 4:27And we got to sit and just chat about life and look out on the ocean And
- 4:33it was just this calming sensation for both of us where we just got
- 4:37to live and be around the ocean.
- 4:39You could smell the ocean.
- 4:40Sometimes good smells, sometimes not so good smells.
- 4:43There's this feeling you get when you live around the ocean.
- 4:46And you can tell when you meet somebody that's from a coastal area.
- 4:50They're a little bit more laid back, they're a little bit more
- 4:52nature-focused, and they enjoy the ocean.
- 4:55They enjoy being in nature.
- 4:58And I think there's a lot of people who enjoy it in different ways.
- 5:01You got people who go on beach vacations or there's like fishing
- 5:04or there's whale watching, surfing, which I've never been good at.
- 5:08Scuba diving, which I do.
- 5:09Just working on the water, it's something I've been able to do over my lifetime.
- 5:13And then just simply like listening to the waves.
- 5:15It's really cool to just be there and just listen.
- 5:18Close your eyes, like maybe lie in a park that's by the ocean
- 5:21and just listen to the waves.
- 5:22Listen to those crashing up against the wall, sometimes gently,
- 5:25sometimes a little bit more harshly.
- 5:26But it's so much fun.
- 5:28And I think what happens is we lose sight of that.
- 5:31We lose sight of what the ocean brings us from a mental health
- 5:36aspect, what the ocean brings us from, just like a feeling of peace.
- 5:41Just a feeling of enjoyment.
- 5:43You see people kayaking the ocean, you see people on their boats, you
- 5:46see people recreational fishing.
- 5:49It brings a lot of joy to a lot of people.
- 5:51And I feel like a lot of the times, even when you listen to this podcast,
- 5:54especially when you listen to this podcast, we talk about conservation.
- 5:56We talk about major issues that have been seen in and around the ocean.
- 6:01I had, um, a listener give some feedback on Spotify.
- 6:05And she loved the podcast, but she was saying, "Hey, you know what? The five
- 6:07episodes is a lot. It plugs up my feed." Which I'm working on that, by the way.
- 6:11That'll come out in probably about a week.
- 6:13And she was saying, "Hey, look, I love the episodes, but I can't
- 6:15listen to them all the time," 'cause a lot of topics are pretty heavy.
- 6:18And it's true.
- 6:19I never thought about it that way.
- 6:20Sometimes you lose sight of that 'cause you're trying to bring optimism, but a
- 6:22lot of the topics that we talk about on this episode, it can be pretty heavy.
- 6:25Like, they're not something that you would just sit back and relax
- 6:28and listen to, although some people do, some people don't.
- 6:31But they're heavy topics.
- 6:32They're a little bit different than some of the other podcasts that
- 6:34are out there that are, like, maybe more popular, a little bit more
- 6:37relaxed that you wanna listen to.
- 6:38And I feel the same way.
- 6:39Like, when I listen to podcasts on, like, marketing and, like, entrepreneurship
- 6:44and all this, it's something that I like.
- 6:45After a while I'm like, "I need to just kind of relax and just get a
- 6:48podcast that's maybe talking about sports or talking about life and just
- 6:53lifestyles in general, and just, like, a comedy show that's not…" Like,
- 6:57trying to get a comedy podcast that's not male-dominated or alpha male kind
- 7:01of stuff, just, like, regular stuff.
- 7:03It's difficult to do more than you think.
- 7:05But we try and do that.
- 7:06So, like, I had that feedback and it was great to hear because, like,
- 7:09people wanted to hear about this.
- 7:11But a lot of the topics that we talk about can be heavy.
- 7:14And so last week we talked about cold water species.
- 7:17We talked about the blue shark, the mola mola, the ocean sunfish.
- 7:19Talked about leatherback sea turtle.
- 7:21We talk about the animals that you see in tide pools, which I'm hoping
- 7:23to kinda do a little bit when I go to Halifax, and explore those.
- 7:27And I think that's something that when you're able to be there all the
- 7:30time, and you're able to go, like…
- 7:32Nova Scotia has the highest tides in the world, and if I'm able to go to the Bay of
- 7:35Fundy when I'm out there, which I probably won't, but I always wanna go, you just
- 7:38see those, when the tide recedes and you see all this open, basically mud flats.
- 7:44And you see all these animals kinda scurrying around or hiding
- 7:47under a rock, these crabs, the scallops that are underneath.
- 7:49It's just so cool.
- 7:50It's just so cool.
- 7:52And you get to witness that live, right in person.
- 7:55So I talk about the ocean, but I grew up around Great Lakes.
- 7:58And not a lot of people can be by the ocean.
- 8:01But you can be by a river, you can be by a lake, you can be by a stream.
- 8:06I highly recommend that if you live by a body of water, that you make
- 8:11the time today, especially today on Oceans Day, to just go and enjoy.
- 8:16Enjoy the water, enjoy the calm, the peace, and really reflect
- 8:21on what you want this year to be for you and living within nature.
- 8:25A lot of the times, we think we are at the top of nature, and we control things.
- 8:29And yes, we do have a huge influence, but we're not at the top of the food
- 8:33chain when it comes to the planet.
- 8:35Yes, we affect it and yes, we can control a lot of things, but we
- 8:38don't really control the weather.
- 8:39We don't control the climate.
- 8:40We can affect it, but we don't control it.
- 8:42We live in sort of this, like, pyramid with all the other
- 8:45animals, and we're part of that.
- 8:48And so, like, think about where our place is on this planet, and the influence that
- 8:53we have and the ability to protect and destroy what this planet has naturally.
- 8:58And it's not about manipulation for money.
- 9:01It's not about trying to gouge the ocean and its resources for everything
- 9:06that it has until we have nothing left, but we got all this money.
- 9:10It's about living in peace with the ocean.
- 9:12It's about respecting the ocean.
- 9:16And I'm gonna leave you with this.
- 9:17I've talked about it before on the podcast, but if you're new here,
- 9:20you haven't heard me talk about it.
- 9:20I was at the World Ocean Summit in Montreal just a couple months ago.
- 9:24It was a huge summit.
- 9:25It changed my life, really.
- 9:26Got me a new job with Pisces Oceans, which is the sponsor
- 9:28of this show, but it's great.
- 9:29It literally changed my life.
- 9:30But one of the things that I heard that really changed my life is Ken Paul, who's
- 9:34an indigenous person who lives in Canada, and he's got a lot of work, he does a lot
- 9:39of work with indigenous groups as well as non-indigenous groups around the ocean.
- 9:43And he talked about how there's been, like, this lack of respect
- 9:47that we've had for the ocean, that a lot of people have for the ocean.
- 9:49It's just we don't respect the ocean.
- 9:51We just use the ocean for what we need it for.
- 9:54And that was really powerful for me.
- 9:55If we start to respect the ocean, and in every decision that we make, the ocean is
- 10:02part of that decision, like the health of the ocean is considered in each part of
- 10:06that decision, we become a better people.
- 10:09We become a better species.
- 10:11Our planet becomes better.
- 10:13We are not just ripping it to shreds so that we can get an extra buck.
- 10:17We are taking care of it because it's taking care of us.
- 10:20And I think that's what I wanna leave you with today because I think it's extremely
- 10:24important to say, "Hey, you know what?
- 10:27We need to build this out as a community, and we need to have this community enjoy
- 10:32the ocean and respect the ocean and speak highly of it in every decision
- 10:37that they make." Whether it's buying something at the convenience store or
- 10:41bring your reusable water bottle wherever you go and grabbing that water or drinks
- 10:45wherever you go, that's important.
- 10:47Those are important decisions that we need to make in a collective.
- 10:51And I think also, as you look forward, is to say, "Where's my community? Where is my
- 10:57community?" I was on another call a couple weeks ago where Chad Nelsen was speaking,
- 11:02and he's the CEO of Surfrider in the US.
- 11:06A great, great guy.
- 11:07He's been on the podcast a number of times.
- 11:09And something that really stood out for what he said about, just, like,
- 11:14the ocean in general and the community that's around the ocean is, like, a lot
- 11:18of the times the people, like when we go online, and I ask this question, I'm
- 11:22like, when we go online and we talk about the ocean, we talk about the climate,
- 11:25we get attacked right away, whether it be from bots or from like crazy
- 11:29people who come on and just be like, "Climate change isn't real.
- 11:32The ocean sucks.
- 11:33Who cares, Mick?
- 11:33I don't care about a sea turtle and a plastic straw," all that blah, blah, blah.
- 11:36And it makes it hard to comment on things or to bring about this type
- 11:40of awareness in certain circles.
- 11:42But the community that we want, the community that we have are the
- 11:45people who are, care about the ocean.
- 11:47And that's what, you know, places like Surfrider does, is that those community,
- 11:50you can come there as a collective.
- 11:52So you come for the community, you come for the commonality of, "Hey,
- 11:55let's protect the ocean. I care about the environment," and then
- 11:58you stay for the cleanups, and you stay for the impact that you do.
- 12:01And I think that's what we need to find.
- 12:03For those of you who are listening to this episode because you're
- 12:05looking for that community, we can have that community here.
- 12:08I'd love to start that online community where we're together, and we're
- 12:13talking about the ocean back and forth.
- 12:15I may start the conversation through this podcast, but we
- 12:17can have this type of community.
- 12:20So give me some time and we can have this community.
- 12:23I think it's kind of a new thing, a new year.
- 12:25I always like to look at the Oceans Day as a bit of a new
- 12:28year for me, like a new start.
- 12:29I have a couple of them.
- 12:30There's the New Year, actual physical annual January 1st New Year, there's
- 12:33the New Year of Oceans Day, and then of course there's the New Year I always
- 12:36consider as my birthday, 'cause it used to start, right, so it's September 5th.
- 12:39It used to start right before school, and so I used to think it was a new year.
- 12:42But Oceans Day has come to be like a new year, and one thing I wanna
- 12:45do in this new year is interact more and build this community together
- 12:49so that we can have this community.
- 12:51And I would love to do that by opening up my Patreon for this community.
- 12:55So if you go to speakupforblue.com/patreon, we can
- 12:59have this community of fun where we get together once a month, we talk about
- 13:03the ocean, we can have a good time.
- 13:05I'm gonna put up some things right now.
- 13:07Go to speakupforblue.com/patreon.
- 13:10This is where you're gonna get the different feeds.
- 13:12So you're gonna get a feed where you can just get the interviews that I do, and
- 13:16you're gonna get a feed where you get both the interviews and the solo episodes.
- 13:19You'll get it through Patreon.
- 13:20I'll have instructions on there.
- 13:21That part will be for free.
- 13:23If you wanna join the community at large, there will be a little bit of a fee.
- 13:26So, it'll be a lot of fun.
- 13:27I can't wait to do it.
- 13:28But yes, you can support the podcast.
- 13:30A lot of people have reached out.
- 13:31It's like, "Andrew, I wanna support you and the podcast that you do."
- 13:34I do have an editor, and I do have a lot of expenses that go around it,
- 13:36so it'll help me pay for this and continue to have these conversations.
- 13:39But if you go to speakupforblue.com/patreon, you'll
- 13:43be able to join the community there.
- 13:45That's it for today's episode.
- 13:47Happy Oceans Day.
- 13:48I wanna thank you for joining me today, the next few weeks, the next
- 13:52year, and then all the ones who have been with me since the beginning
- 13:55and your journey throughout that.
- 13:56I wanna thank you so much for the support.
- 13:58I wanna thank you so much for joining me.
- 13:59Looking forward to talking to you tomorrow.
- 14:01We're gonna talk about why protests, especially around certain things that
- 14:04could affect the climate, which could affect the environment, like in data
- 14:07centers, have been working, and why we shouldn't stop in these days when
- 14:12people are attacking the environment.
- 14:13We're gonna talk about that tomorrow.
- 14:14So follow this episode so you can get in touch with me tomorrow, and you can
- 14:18get this episode tomorrow where we talk about data centers and protests and
- 14:21some of the wins that we've been seeing.
- 14:23All right, that's it for today's episode.
- 14:24Thank you so much for joining me on today's episode of the How
- 14:27to Protect the Ocean podcast.
- 14:28Have a great day.
- 14:29We'll talk to you next time, and happy conservation.
