- 0:00Speaker 1: Jeff Motion from the Inside the Birds podcast Philly Voice
- 0:04Speaker 1: covers the Eagles joining us here all ninety seven three
- 0:07Speaker 1: as Jeff, I never thought I would be saying breaking
- 0:12Speaker 1: news Eagles acquire Andy Dalton, but yet here we are.
- 0:15Speaker 1: Andy Dalton is prospectively the Eagles new backup quarterback. And
- 0:22Speaker 1: the only guy Jeff I can find that any connective
- 0:24Speaker 1: tissue in his sixteen year career is Parks Fraser. I
- 0:28Speaker 1: can't find anyone else that Dalton has a connection to
- 0:31Speaker 1: when it comes to this coaching staff.
- 0:34Speaker 2: Yeah, I wouldn't be so quick to call him the
- 0:35Speaker 2: backup quarterback.
- 0:36Speaker 3: I mean, Tanner McKee is still the backup quarterback until otherwise.
- 0:40Speaker 3: But I do think it's a it's an interesting acquisition, Josh,
- 0:44Speaker 3: to your point in that this guy who started one
- 0:46Speaker 3: hundred and sixty nine games, he's a pretty.
- 0:48Speaker 2: Good guy to have a backup quarterback.
- 0:51Speaker 3: I mean they put him in when Bryce Young was
- 0:53Speaker 3: struggling a couple of years ago because they felt more
- 0:55Speaker 3: confident in him being able to win games. Now it
- 0:59Speaker 3: could be a say that they feel like they've got
- 1:01Speaker 3: something on the trade market for Tanner McKee, and you know,
- 1:04Speaker 3: they want to have a good veteran backup who's cost efficient,
- 1:07Speaker 3: and certainly at his number, he will be cost efficient.
- 1:10Speaker 2: It's a four million dollar contract. I believe two million
- 1:13Speaker 2: is guaranteed.
- 1:13Speaker 3: And that's where it's interesting, because two million guaranteed is
- 1:17Speaker 3: a little bit too much to.
- 1:18Speaker 4: Eat along with the pick if you don't plan to
- 1:21Speaker 4: have him on the team. Like, if you keep McKee
- 1:23Speaker 4: and you draft a quarterback, what do you do then
- 1:28Speaker 4: with Dalton? So it makes me think that there's something
- 1:32Speaker 4: going on there in the works.
- 1:34Speaker 1: Well, one of the other side of the coin, Jeff,
- 1:36Speaker 1: which is there's a lot of guys who are free
- 1:38Speaker 1: agents who are quarterbacks and for whatever reason, you know,
- 1:43Speaker 1: and I'm not saying the Eagles should sign any of
- 1:44Speaker 1: these guys, but the Eagles said, hey, we are going
- 1:47Speaker 1: to go on and get Andy Dalton instead of signing
- 1:51Speaker 1: Tyrod Taylor, Cooper Ross, Jimmy g Brandon Allen. Like, there
- 1:55Speaker 1: are guys out there that you could have brought in
- 1:57Speaker 1: for a quote unquote camp arm No, like you said,
- 2:00Speaker 1: you are investing something into this is Andy Dalton instead
- 2:05Speaker 1: of just bringing in one of those random guys.
- 2:08Speaker 3: Yeah, I think the most I guess ironic thing of
- 2:11Speaker 3: all is that they had Sam Howell right. They hired
- 2:17Speaker 3: Sean Mannon as the OC. Howell was in Minnesota last
- 2:21Speaker 3: year before he came to the Eagles, so he was
- 2:24Speaker 3: knowledgeable of Kevin O'Connell's offense. You know, they must not
- 2:27Speaker 3: have loved him because they obviously got rid of him
- 2:29Speaker 3: for Carson Wentz. But to your point, usually you're looking
- 2:32Speaker 3: for backups. Guys are coming who will know the offense.
- 2:36Speaker 3: But Sam Howell is now, of course with the Cowboys,
- 2:39Speaker 3: and you're right, there's not a whole lot of connection
- 2:42Speaker 3: here between Dalton and the staff. They could have signed,
- 2:46Speaker 3: but they clearly how he is not afraid if he
- 2:49Speaker 3: likes a guy and thinks he's good enough to give
- 2:52Speaker 3: up a draft pick for him as opposed to going
- 2:54Speaker 3: the signing the free agent round.
- 2:58Speaker 1: Get to the tann and McKee part of the conversation, Jeff. Obviously,
- 3:02Speaker 1: this is not a great quarterback draft class. There's a
- 3:04Speaker 1: lot of people who have a you know, they don't
- 3:07Speaker 1: have a lot of high grades on these quarterbacks. This is
- 3:09Speaker 1: kind of like the draft class with Kenny Pigott years ago,
- 3:11Speaker 1: where people are gonna get overdrafted. So are the Eagles
- 3:15Speaker 1: Maybe banking on the idea that someone's not gonna get
- 3:18Speaker 1: who they want and that Tanner McKee might be someone's
- 3:21Speaker 1: backup option.
- 3:23Speaker 2: I'm sure, I'm sure that's the case.
- 3:25Speaker 3: And you know, Justin Fields got traded yesterday, so it's
- 3:28Speaker 3: it's a little interesting that this trade today for Andy
- 3:31Speaker 3: Dalton goes down because you know, Field's going to the
- 3:35Speaker 3: Chiefs is one less quarterback on the market now. I
- 3:37Speaker 3: don't know if anybody wanted him as their starter, but
- 3:41Speaker 3: now he's the backup for the Chiefs. And where are
- 3:43Speaker 3: you going if you're looking for a either a starter
- 3:46Speaker 3: or b someone like Fields who can compete with your
- 3:51Speaker 3: starter or push your guy in house to be the starter,
- 3:56Speaker 3: And that's what you would want Tanneer McKee to be.
- 3:59Speaker 2: If not, you're definitely your starter.
- 4:04Speaker 1: With that being said, you mentioned the fact that the
- 4:06Speaker 1: Eagles could still draft a quarterback, so you know, look,
- 4:09Speaker 1: we're not talking about first round draft pick.
- 4:11Speaker 5: We're obviously not saying that, but you.
- 4:13Speaker 1: Know, where would a just to use an example, a
- 4:16Speaker 1: third day three pick, right a guy they draft, where
- 4:19Speaker 1: do you think that would fit in to the conversation
- 4:22Speaker 1: Because they have drafted quarterbacks in the past, like Kylin
- 4:24Speaker 1: McCord and they didn't make the team. So is it
- 4:28Speaker 1: just a matter of as you said earlier, Howie and
- 4:31Speaker 1: the Eagles maybe just like somebody enough to want to
- 4:34Speaker 1: bring him in to get a better look at him.
- 4:36Speaker 3: Well, the organization we know really wants to have as
- 4:38Speaker 3: many young developmental quarterbacks as possible, and not just.
- 4:41Speaker 2: To have them. They really want to be able to
- 4:43Speaker 2: see it through.
- 4:44Speaker 3: Sometimes they miss, and of course Kylin McCord is one
- 4:47Speaker 3: of those situations. Sometimes they hit, and Tanner mckeeth for them,
- 4:51Speaker 3: they would consider a hit, especially because they feel like
- 4:54Speaker 3: he was good enough to be their backup last year
- 4:57Speaker 3: and that's an important spot for the Eagles, and he's
- 4:59Speaker 3: are already, they've gotten interest in him already.
- 5:02Speaker 2: So I would not put anything, you know, second.
- 5:08Speaker 3: Round or later passed the Eagles day two or day three,
- 5:12Speaker 3: because they really don't have a young developmental quarterback, especially
- 5:16Speaker 3: if they trade Tanner McKee. And even even if they don't,
- 5:20Speaker 3: this is Tanner McKee's last year of his deal and
- 5:22Speaker 3: it would be tough to retain him after this year.
- 5:24Speaker 3: You're not going to give him an extension to be
- 5:26Speaker 3: a backup, you know. The just this hasn't happened. So
- 5:30Speaker 3: I think that any you know, they shocked us all
- 5:33Speaker 3: in twenty twenty when they took Jalen Hurts in round two,
- 5:38Speaker 3: and all these years later, I think that means we
- 5:41Speaker 3: can't really put anything pass down. Remember, Jalen Hurts, despite
- 5:45Speaker 3: what you know a thousand people want to say, was
- 5:48Speaker 3: not drafted to take Carson Wentz's spot.
- 5:51Speaker 2: They had no clue that things were going to unfold
- 5:53Speaker 2: the way they did.
- 5:54Speaker 3: He was drafted because they really wanted a young, cost
- 5:57Speaker 3: efficient backup that they believed in, and they admitted that
- 6:00Speaker 3: they reached for him in round two because of the
- 6:03Speaker 3: Russell Wilson situation that had burned them several years earlier.
- 6:06Speaker 3: So that's why I'm not sitting here saying, you know,
- 6:09Speaker 3: it's I'm not trying to like some people think like
- 6:12Speaker 3: you're stirring the pot.
- 6:13Speaker 2: If you say the Eagles could take a quarterback in
- 6:16Speaker 2: round two or three BS, that's not stirring anything.
- 6:19Speaker 3: It's just they're operating procedure now and again, it would
- 6:23Speaker 3: only mean that they're looking for a young, developmental quarterback.
- 6:27Speaker 1: Jeff Wilcher joined US Football four powered by the Inside
- 6:29Speaker 1: the Birds podcasts inside the Birds dot Com also writes
- 6:32Speaker 1: for Philly Voice, joining us here on the Sports Bash
- 6:35Speaker 1: on ninety seven three ESPN, staying with the office side
- 6:39Speaker 1: of the ball. Jeff, we didn't get your thoughts yet
- 6:40Speaker 1: on yesterday's news. I know you guys talked about on
- 6:42Speaker 1: the on the pod this morning, but Hollywood Brown is
- 6:47Speaker 1: now in the wide receiver room for the Eagles, and
- 6:50Speaker 1: I find it interesting because you know, this is a
- 6:54Speaker 1: receiver who wanted out of Baltimore because he wanted more
- 6:58Speaker 1: targets and now is coming to a team where you
- 7:02Speaker 1: have a coordinator who is coming from an offense that's
- 7:05Speaker 1: spread the ball around. So is this a good fit
- 7:10Speaker 1: for Hollywood Brown with the Eagles.
- 7:13Speaker 2: Well, yeah, it's a good fit.
- 7:15Speaker 3: You're right, And he definitely falls into the category of
- 7:17Speaker 3: to be careful what you ask for treatment because you
- 7:21Speaker 3: want out, Okay, we'll send you over to Arizona, which
- 7:23Speaker 3: doesn't have Lamar Jackson anymore and shaky passing game, and
- 7:27Speaker 3: then you know, we wound up getting hurt a lot.
- 7:29Speaker 3: I think he's a talented player who has not yet
- 7:33Speaker 3: fulfilled the type of talent that he came into the
- 7:36Speaker 3: league with, which is blistering speed, the ability to make
- 7:41Speaker 3: yards after cats because of that speed, and it just
- 7:45Speaker 3: hasn't manifested for him because of injuries. And also I
- 7:49Speaker 3: wouldn't me and Adam talked about this on the podcast
- 7:52Speaker 3: this morning. It's probably not like the best ball tracker
- 7:56Speaker 3: downfield for a guy who has blistering speed. You know,
- 7:59Speaker 3: we're a little boiled here because guys like Deshan Jackson
- 8:02Speaker 3: who were just elite ball trackers, and so was AJ Brown, right,
- 8:06Speaker 3: and DeVante Smith all in different ways. But that's yet
- 8:10Speaker 3: to be something that Hollywood is really excelled at. But
- 8:14Speaker 3: he still has great speed, he can still make plays,
- 8:16Speaker 3: I think if he's healthy. You know, this signing was
- 8:20Speaker 3: not to replace AJ Brown because they're not nearly the
- 8:24Speaker 3: same kind of player. And after AJ Brown, Vante Smith
- 8:28Speaker 3: with Johan Dotson, Gohn, Josh. The list of receivers Egles
- 8:32Speaker 3: had are this, Britton, Covey, Johnny Wilson, Darius Cooper, and
- 8:37Speaker 3: I'm probably missing somebody else.
- 8:39Speaker 2: There, but you get the point, right. It was just
- 8:41Speaker 2: it's a list.
- 8:41Speaker 3: Of people who are not ready to be a number
- 8:44Speaker 3: two or number three receiver in the NFL. I am curious.
- 8:47Speaker 3: I'm sure we all are right about Darius Cooper's capacity.
- 8:50Speaker 3: Will have to see and if he can really improve,
- 8:52Speaker 3: that's great. But they had zero depth. So whether you
- 8:56Speaker 3: have AJ Brown or not, you had no depth. So
- 8:59Speaker 3: now you have some. And if you do move AJ Brown,
- 9:01Speaker 3: well you've got Devonte Smith and you've got Marquise Brown.
- 9:06Speaker 3: But then he's us some work to do there.
- 9:09Speaker 1: Now, Brown did have five touchdown catches last year for
- 9:11Speaker 1: the Chiefs. Is there anything you think can be gleaned
- 9:14Speaker 1: from what he did in Kansas City last year? Or
- 9:17Speaker 1: do you think that the Chiefs offense is too different
- 9:19Speaker 1: than when Manion's going to bring to Philadelphia.
- 9:22Speaker 2: Yeah, it's tough.
- 9:24Speaker 3: It's tough because the Chiefs offense was so wonky last
- 9:26Speaker 3: year and then obviously Holmes got hurt at the end
- 9:28Speaker 3: of the year. I thought, you know, he had a
- 9:30Speaker 3: decent year, Hollywood Brown, and he was himself still coming off.
- 9:33Speaker 2: Those injuries, right, So.
- 9:37Speaker 3: You'd like to think this offseason he's been fully healthy,
- 9:39Speaker 3: he'll get into the camp and learn the offense and
- 9:42Speaker 3: give himself a chance to really show what he can do.
- 9:47Speaker 1: Come more for Jeff Mouscher here on Football for a
- 9:49Speaker 1: Power by the Inside of Birds podcast ticking the offense
- 9:51Speaker 1: to side the ball of Jeff? What is your perspective
- 9:54Speaker 1: on now that we're kind of getting into that next
- 9:57Speaker 1: stage of the offseason, right, you.
- 9:59Speaker 5: Know, the first flurry.
- 10:01Speaker 1: Of like crazy big names have come off the board, right,
- 10:04Speaker 1: and now we're kind of getting into this season of
- 10:06Speaker 1: you know, hey, we're gonna go to Marshall's discount rack
- 10:09Speaker 1: and see what we can get for a good value,
- 10:11Speaker 1: howie season?
- 10:12Speaker 5: Right?
- 10:12Speaker 1: You know, what do you think the next Chess move
- 10:15Speaker 1: is going to be in terms of fortifying this roster
- 10:18Speaker 1: because they do have a lot of needs on both
- 10:22Speaker 1: offense and defense still to be fulfilled.
- 10:24Speaker 3: Oh yeah, I can't that That may first deadline or
- 10:28Speaker 3: April twenty eighth, whatever it is where all your signings
- 10:32Speaker 3: no longer count against the compic formula, are gonna be
- 10:35Speaker 3: a fascinating time for the Eagles.
- 10:37Speaker 2: You know, that's when how he has done some of
- 10:39Speaker 2: his best work.
- 10:40Speaker 3: You're talking about Makhai Beckton, right, you're talking about le
- 10:44Speaker 3: Garrett Blunt, You're talking about Gosh, you know he traded
- 10:48Speaker 3: for CJ. Gardner Johnson a week before the season starts.
- 10:51Speaker 3: We talked about that last week. So I never really
- 10:55Speaker 3: like get into a we need to caution the public
- 11:00Speaker 3: mode after the first two weeks of free agency when
- 11:03Speaker 3: when he's not active.
- 11:05Speaker 2: I mean, you look at their edge rusher spot. You're
- 11:07Speaker 2: asking me what they I mean. You know they had
- 11:10Speaker 2: twenty million to give the jail.
- 11:12Speaker 3: And Phillips that they couldn't because he took a different offer.
- 11:16Speaker 2: They have to get an edge rusher, and.
- 11:18Speaker 3: A good one, like someone who's worth spending a lot
- 11:20Speaker 3: of money on that they were going to give the Phillips,
- 11:22Speaker 3: And they're gonna have to be creative because that's not
- 11:24Speaker 3: somebody that's on the market right now. So not on
- 11:27Speaker 3: the free agent market, could be the trade market, could
- 11:30Speaker 3: have to be the draft safety Josh, I mean, right now,
- 11:34Speaker 3: how do you line up and play a game? And
- 11:36Speaker 3: so with safety and that you don't have to, but
- 11:38Speaker 3: like that's my point is you've got Andrew mccouba, and
- 11:42Speaker 3: you don't have reblanket ship, and your number three safety
- 11:46Speaker 3: was Marcus Steps, he's a free agent, might not be back.
- 11:48Speaker 2: And your number four safety you've already decided it's not
- 11:51Speaker 2: going to play for you, and that's City Brown.
- 11:53Speaker 3: So you kind of need three safeties in here that
- 11:56Speaker 3: that you feel comfortable with.
- 11:58Speaker 1: Yeah, the safety thing is gonna be absolutely fasting. And
- 12:00Speaker 1: I will say this, and I know it's very I
- 12:05Speaker 1: know it's very hard to read into things. So I'm
- 12:08Speaker 1: not asking you or anybody to do that, but at
- 12:10Speaker 1: least for me, I did find it interesting that, you know,
- 12:14Speaker 1: on the Exciting Mike's Pod that re Blankenship never never
- 12:18Speaker 1: said yes or no the Eagles offered him anything. So
- 12:22Speaker 1: you know, it could be very possible the Eagles have
- 12:25Speaker 1: always been trying to look for the next safety, not
- 12:28Speaker 1: just because Blankenship signed with Houston, you know what I mean?
- 12:31Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, I mean from what we understand.
- 12:33Speaker 3: You know, Adam and I have talked about on the pod,
- 12:34Speaker 3: there were definitely conversations. You know, it's hard to say
- 12:37Speaker 3: whether conversations led to a concrete offer or whether conversations
- 12:41Speaker 3: made it understood that so Howie has this way sometimes
- 12:46Speaker 3: of saying, you can be a guy, will be an
- 12:48Speaker 3: Eagle if he wants to be an Eagle, which is
- 12:51Speaker 3: his way of saying if he wants to take a
- 12:52Speaker 3: blow market deal, you know, So it is it's hard
- 12:56Speaker 3: to say if at exact numbers were exchange or if
- 12:59Speaker 3: the message was like if you think you're going to
- 13:02Speaker 3: do better than this on the free agent market, then
- 13:06Speaker 3: you're welcome to go test that free agent market and
- 13:09Speaker 3: if you get it, go go grab it. If not,
- 13:12Speaker 3: come back to us and we'll talk. You know, that's
- 13:14Speaker 3: oftentimes how it goes with guys like that.
- 13:18Speaker 1: A couple more things, we'll let you go. Jeff boss
- 13:21Speaker 1: Is Scott retired.
- 13:25Speaker 2: Giants are very happy. I'm sure it.
- 13:28Speaker 1: Is pretty impressive that when you go back and look
- 13:30Speaker 1: at his career that you realize that he probably was
- 13:36Speaker 1: one of the biggest overachievers to ever play in the
- 13:38Speaker 1: Eagles uniform, right, I mean, you talk about a guy
- 13:42Speaker 1: who is probably, first of all, he will just overlooking
- 13:45Speaker 1: out of high school.
- 13:46Speaker 5: He's overlo coming out of college, was it Louis?
- 13:48Speaker 1: He had a tech and I remember correctly one of
- 13:50Speaker 1: the years he had seven rushing touchdowns with the Eagles.
- 13:55Speaker 3: Yes, I think five of them were against the Giants.
- 14:00Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 14:03Speaker 3: The one thing I can think about with Boston Scott
- 14:05Speaker 3: is I don't remember him ever getting into the game
- 14:07Speaker 3: and not playing well or like or really screwing up,
- 14:10Speaker 3: you know what I'm saying.
- 14:10Speaker 2: I mean he was, Yes, he overachieved.
- 14:12Speaker 3: I mean he was a barely five to nine running back,
- 14:17Speaker 3: built compactly built, so was strong, you break tackles, but
- 14:20Speaker 3: he had a he had a little bit of wiggle.
- 14:22Speaker 3: You can catch the ball, right, But guys like that
- 14:24Speaker 3: are a Dimer dozen.
- 14:25Speaker 2: And he still managed to have some successful years. And
- 14:29Speaker 2: did he go to a Super Bowl? The Eagles? Was
- 14:30Speaker 2: he on the team? And yeah, yeah, so he went
- 14:36Speaker 2: to a Super Bowl.
- 14:37Speaker 3: His Instagram message was interesting because he, you know, talked
- 14:40Speaker 3: about all the inner conflict of being you know, happy
- 14:43Speaker 3: about his career but incomplete and angry and never really
- 14:47Speaker 3: getting the chance, but also realizing you can work so
- 14:50Speaker 3: hard for something and not get that chance. And he's
- 14:52Speaker 3: right that that is that's an NFL player story to
- 14:55Speaker 3: a team, especially an undrafted guy. I mean, I don't
- 14:58Speaker 3: know if he could work any hard or done anything
- 15:01Speaker 3: differently to put himself in a position to succeed. But
- 15:04Speaker 3: at the end of the day, when you are a
- 15:06Speaker 3: Diamond dozen because of either your lack of measurables or
- 15:10Speaker 3: how you're built or what your talent level is, it's
- 15:12Speaker 3: still a great story for him to have made it
- 15:14Speaker 3: as far as he did.
- 15:16Speaker 1: Yeah, for those don't remember bosses, Scott's initial rise to
- 15:20Speaker 1: fame was during the twenty nineteen season when half the
- 15:24Speaker 1: team got injured and it was you know, Bosson Scott
- 15:27Speaker 1: and Josh Perkins and Deyonty Burnett who were all running
- 15:30Speaker 1: around on offense with Carson Wentz and we it's still
- 15:33Speaker 1: perplexing that Wentz through for four thousand.
- 15:34Speaker 5: Passing yards that year. Yeah, but you know that.
- 15:38Speaker 2: Year that the Notre Dame running back who was.
- 15:40Speaker 3: What's his name, the tall Josh Adams Josh Adams, Yeah, yeah,
- 15:45Speaker 3: I remember that.
- 15:46Speaker 1: Well he got Yeah, Boss, it's got more playing time
- 15:49Speaker 1: than he did.
- 15:50Speaker 2: That's that's amazing, crazy traidy times.
- 15:55Speaker 1: Jeff Mosher at Jeff P. Mosher because PE obviously stands
- 15:58Speaker 1: for Philadelphia.
- 15:59Speaker 5: I'm just kidding it. Joining us here on.
- 16:01Speaker 1: The Sports pascheon on ninety seventy three ESPN. Alright, Jeff,
- 16:05Speaker 1: you can go back to your regular schedule programming.
- 16:07Speaker 2: Okay, all right, I have a good one.
