Transcript
- 0:00Alright, if you guys would please turn to Philippians 4.
- 0:15So we are in the last part of this amazing letter.
- 0:20As I told you before, the church of Philippi, there's really no rebuke in this letter to
- 0:25the church of Philippi.
- 0:26There is something extremely special about this church and we kind of gleaned that from
- 0:32last week where Paul, or two weeks ago, where Paul talks about that they are the crown jewel
- 0:38of the ministry that he has done.
- 0:41And an amazing work and just amazing heart of the people of Philippi.
- 0:47And what's interesting is that many of us go around, especially when we're challenging
- 0:51you to study the word to God and to learn and to reason through the word of God, we
- 0:56say be a good Berean.
- 0:58One of the terms that we talk about in this letter is be a good Philippian.
- 1:02Because they studied the word well and really challenged and made sure that people were
- 1:08learning and teaching sound doctrine where the Philippians live the word well.
- 1:13And there's not many church examples in, matter of fact this is probably the only one, where
- 1:21this church just really lives out the gospel, really lives out the Christian life and Paul
- 1:26just exhorts and encourages and entreats them to continue to do so.
- 1:30And this is really this last part where Paul in chapter four verse 10 through 23, where
- 1:37Paul challenges this church to continue caring and being concerned with one another.
- 1:44It's pretty amazing to see the consistency that Paul does and the life of the Philippians.
- 1:50So my challenge is when you read this, pay attention to the heartbeat of the Philippian
- 1:56church.
- 1:57The heartbeat of the church is Christ and the blood that flows through her is the gospel
- 2:02and they are fully committed to Yahweh God in every way.
- 2:07And so I want to encourage you with that.
- 2:09So we're going to start off in verse eight of chapter four and read right into verse
- 2:1410.
- 2:15And this is what it says, it says, finally brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable,
- 2:20whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there
- 2:26is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.
- 2:34What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, practice these things and
- 2:40the God of peace will be with you.
- 2:44I rejoice in the Lord greatly that now at length you have revived your concern for me.
- 2:52You were indeed concerned for me, but had no opportunity.
- 2:57Not that I am speaking of being in need, for I have learned in whatever situation I am
- 3:04to be content.
- 3:05I know how to be brought low.
- 3:07I know how to abound in any and every circumstance.
- 3:11I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need.
- 3:20I can do all things through him who strengthens me.
- 3:25So when you hear this conversation that Paul's doing, he exhorts, he entreats, he challenges
- 3:30them, he tells them to think about these things, set their mind on Christ, keep their mind
- 3:34on Christ, and then he leaves them with this encouragement.
- 3:38I rejoice greatly that you are concerned for me.
- 3:42That is really the reality of how God's people should be living with one another.
- 3:48Are we genuinely concerned for each other?
- 3:54I think that in some cases, I can't help but to think that regardless of some churches,
- 4:04there's a tendency for people to not show or there's a lack of concern, a lack of connecting,
- 4:10a lack of really following through.
- 4:15But one of the things I think, one of the principles I want to give you is this, make
- 4:20the Lord your refuge and he will keep and sustain you.
- 4:25Make the Lord your refuge and he will keep and sustain you.
- 4:30That's an important principle.
- 4:33And that's what Paul's understanding concerns.
- 4:35He has made the Lord his refuge and as a result, God keeps and sustains him.
- 4:41And you see that principle at work here as he's talking to the Philippians.
- 4:47I know, I've learned, I know that I am to be content.
- 4:53He is my refuge.
- 4:54He is all I need.
- 4:56But he leaves another principle in this conversation.
- 5:00And the principle he leaves with them is be careful to maintain your concern for one another.
- 5:06The world watches to see if we love one another by the measure of concern we have for one
- 5:13another.
- 5:16It's not just you're going out and feeding the hungry and that's important.
- 5:20But the world is watching not what we do for them, but what we do with each other.
- 5:26The world is seeing, if they're real believers, how come they hate each other so much?
- 5:32How come they argue so much?
- 5:33How come they fight so much?
- 5:36How come they can't agree on anything?
- 5:38It's never about they'll take your free stuff.
- 5:43But what they're really watching is the measure of concern that you have for one another.
- 5:47So be careful to maintain your concern for one another.
- 5:50And here's what it says in verse 10, I rejoice in the Lord greatly that now at length you
- 5:58have revived your concern for me.
- 6:02Now I want you to understand this word revived here.
- 6:04It's not that they stopped being concerned, but there was these moments in the life of
- 6:11the Philippian church when they wanted to show their concern by providing and giving
- 6:15and caring for Paul that they couldn't.
- 6:18There was really no opportunity, that was close, really no opportunity for them to do
- 6:24so.
- 6:25And so for Paul when he says you revived your concern for me, he's like you're still looking
- 6:31to care for me.
- 6:33You brought this genuine concern for me again and I am very thankful.
- 6:38He says you were indeed concerned for me, which we know.
- 6:43You showed your concern for me, but there was no opportunity.
- 6:46You had no opportunity to do so.
- 6:48Not that I'm speaking of being in need.
- 6:51I'm not coming to you and sharing this with you because I want something from you.
- 6:56It's not what he wants.
- 6:58For I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content.
- 7:03Now I want you to understand something.
- 7:05This word I am to be content is this thought is implying that we are to choose contentment.
- 7:13It's hard to be content when life is terrible.
- 7:17When life's not going your way, when finances are difficult, when you're trying to pay the
- 7:21bills and you can't.
- 7:22It's like how can I be content when I'm struggling and suffering?
- 7:26I don't know about that.
- 7:27That's not something I'm really looking forward to.
- 7:30What do we do instead of being content, instead of making that decision to be content, instead
- 7:35of making that decision to make God my refuge, knowing he will keep and sustain me, we trust
- 7:43in other things.
- 7:45Paul doesn't do that here.
- 7:47He has made a conscious decision that in every situation, in every situation I am to be content.
- 7:58I must choose contentment.
- 8:02Difficult.
- 8:05Not easy.
- 8:06But when you go through life and you struggle and things are difficult, it helps you to
- 8:12understand what contentment really means.
- 8:17This is what Paul says in verse 12, I know how to be brought low.
- 8:24You're going to learn that shortly in 2 Corinthians 12, verse 8 through 10.
- 8:29I know how to be brought low and I know how to abound.
- 8:35Trust me, Paul knows when it's been difficult and he just can't make it, he feels like he
- 8:39can't make it and he's done.
- 8:40After all, he was stoned to the point of death and left.
- 8:47He was shipwrecked, bit by snakes.
- 8:51They were seeking to kill him.
- 8:53He knows what it means to be brought low, but he also knows what it means to abound.
- 8:58There's been moments in Paul's ministry where you go, wow, that is miraculous in every way.
- 9:06But then he says, in any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty
- 9:16and hunger.
- 9:17I want you to hear that word secret.
- 9:19It's a very important term.
- 9:23In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance
- 9:31and need.
- 9:32You want to know what the secret is?
- 9:35Here's the secret.
- 9:36I want you to hear that list.
- 9:38Here's the secret.
- 9:39I can do all things through him who strengthens me.
- 9:43I can be content.
- 9:46I can abound when there's little.
- 9:50I can make it.
- 9:53I don't need to worry about my needs.
- 9:54Jesus clarifies this when he says to them, look at the birds of the air.
- 10:02They need a little toil to reap.
- 10:05Look at the flowers of the field.
- 10:07Not even Solomon and all of his splendor was addressed like one of these.
- 10:11Your heavenly father knows what you need before you ask him.
- 10:14But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness and all these things shall be added unto you.
- 10:19You ever notice that the real true victory of the Christian is abiding in the refuge?
- 10:25It's not begging for the need.
- 10:28God knows the need.
- 10:30Abide in the refuge.
- 10:31He is my refuge.
- 10:34He will provide for you.
- 10:35God will keep his promises.
- 10:37You will not go without.
- 10:40But we're too worried because we think we have to do it.
- 10:43But there are moments in our lives just like Paul where he goes, I can do all things through
- 10:48Christ who strengthens me.
- 10:49I can be fully content in the plenty and the little.
- 10:53Let's prove this out a little bit.
- 10:55Second Corinthians 12 verse eight through 10.
- 10:58There's this moment in Paul's life when he's got this thorn in the flesh thing.
- 11:05All of us got thorns in the flesh.
- 11:10And it's sort of like, I think it's the way God tells Paul, get over it.
- 11:17But he doesn't say it like that.
- 11:20He kind of encourages him.
- 11:22It's sort of like get over it.
- 11:23It's all right.
- 11:24It's no big deal.
- 11:25So three times, he says, three times I've pled with the Lord about this.
- 11:31And this thing, this thorn was a thorn that was given by the adversary, Satan, that it
- 11:39should leave me like, please, get this thing away from me.
- 11:44And this is what God says to him.
- 11:46But he, Jesus, said to me, my grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.
- 11:55I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.
- 11:59My power is made perfect in weakness.
- 12:02I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.
- 12:04It's the same thought, same idea.
- 12:06And then he says, therefore, this is the, I know what it is to be brought low and I know
- 12:11what it is to abound.
- 12:13Therefore, I will boast, I will be content.
- 12:18I will brag about my God all the more gladly of my weakness.
- 12:25I will boast of my weakness so that the power of Christ may rest upon me.
- 12:29Do you get that?
- 12:31When you're not content in your weakness, you lose the power of God in your life.
- 12:37Thus, no victory.
- 12:39You walk defeated for the rest of your life.
- 12:42Now let's continue.
- 12:44This is what he says.
- 12:45Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weakness so that the power of Christ
- 12:50may rest upon me for the sake of Christ.
- 12:57Then I am content with weakness.
- 13:01I am content with insults.
- 13:03I am content with hardship.
- 13:06I am content with persecutions and I am content with calamities.
- 13:12That's what he's saying here.
- 13:13Comma.
- 13:14He says weakness, comma, insults, comma, hardships, comma, persecutions, comma, and calamities.
- 13:20So you can put I am content between each of those words.
- 13:24The question for you is are you truly content?
- 13:29Because if you don't embrace your weakness, you will not experience the strength of the
- 13:33living God.
- 13:34You will walk in a life of complete defeat all the time.
- 13:40This is not some prosperity gospel nonsense.
- 13:43This is the reality of a person completely and totally content that Christ is their refuge
- 13:50and he through their weakness pours out his power in their life.
- 13:57It's interesting that we have a hard time I think as reformed preachers to talk about
- 14:04these realities because we don't want to make a come off kind of weird.
- 14:11It's not that.
- 14:12This is the reality of what a real true surrendered life looks like.
- 14:17It doesn't mean that we're not going to have trouble.
- 14:19In this world you will have trouble.
- 14:21Does not mean you're not going to go through struggle.
- 14:23You will.
- 14:24You're going to take up your cross daily and follow him.
- 14:26That's part of the deal.
- 14:28Life is not easy.
- 14:30But it can be winning.
- 14:32And even in the losing, you're still winning.
- 14:36This is what he says, for when I am weak, then I am strong.
- 14:40The purpose, principle number two, purpose to carry each other's burdens and God will
- 14:46supply every need in Christ Jesus.
- 14:50You must purpose to carry each other's burdens.
- 14:55You must find the burdens that we are all carrying with one another and help us help
- 15:02each other carry them.
- 15:04And you know the amazing part, like I said last week is Christ's burden is light.
- 15:10His yoke is easy.
- 15:11There's nothing he can't carry.
- 15:14And then he calls you to also walk with one another.
- 15:18So it gets kind of easy to do.
- 15:21Now this is what it says in Galatians chapter two, chapter six, verse two, bear one another's
- 15:27burdens and so fulfill the law of Christ.
- 15:31In carrying each other's burdens, you are being a shining example of an obedient believer.
- 15:39You have opportunity to live out Christ likeness every single day of your life.
- 15:45Philippians four, 14 through 23 says this, yet it was kind of you to share my trouble.
- 15:53It was kind of you to do so.
- 15:56I'm thankful that you're sharing my trouble.
- 15:59And this is what he says, and you Philippians yourselves know that in the beginning of the
- 16:04gospel when I left Macedonia, no church entered into partnership with me in giving and receiving
- 16:10except you only.
- 16:12So here's what happens.
- 16:13Paul gets saved, radically changed.
- 16:16He is the killer and the destroyer of the church.
- 16:20He goes to Philippi and all the other churches and all the other churches are like, I'm not
- 16:27giving any money to you.
- 16:29I'm not going to give you any provision.
- 16:31You're the guy who was trying to kill people.
- 16:34I don't know about that.
- 16:37I don't really trust you.
- 16:39So until you prove yourself, what's amazing is the Philippians saw Christ in Paul.
- 16:47There was something specifically different about Paul that the Philippian church was
- 16:50able to observe in him.
- 16:53And that was number one, the only thing that Paul cared about was the gospel.
- 16:59That was his main focus when he was first called to go on mission.
- 17:05That's all he preached.
- 17:06He says, I've come to you to know nothing but Christ in him crucified.
- 17:11There's nothing else that matters in Paul's life.
- 17:13And the Philippian church saw that.
- 17:15The second thing is they were absolutely committed to the gospel and to Christ.
- 17:19And so they were going to invest in that.
- 17:21They were going to pour into Paul's ministry in order to help him accomplish what God has
- 17:26called him to do.
- 17:28And they are the only church that did so.
- 17:31So they vetted him well.
- 17:33They watched his life.
- 17:36And through prayer and constant evaluation, they said, we're going to invest in this.
- 17:40This is where God is doing the work in that man's life.
- 17:43He's going to bring the gospel everywhere.
- 17:45And they did that.
- 17:46Paul did that.
- 17:47Have we ever really thought about that?
- 17:51It's interesting.
- 17:52Now you kind of understand why Paul says to the Philippian church, you are the crown jewel
- 17:58of all the churches I've ministered to.
- 18:00You're the only one.
- 18:02And even in Thessalonica, verse 16, you sent me help for my needs once and again.
- 18:10You continue to care for me and be concerned for me and invested in me and to take care
- 18:15of the ministry that was for me.
- 18:17If I could not take care of myself, I wouldn't be able to do the ministry.
- 18:20And they knew that.
- 18:21There was no hesitation in the reality of what was happening here.
- 18:26Paul's ministry was extremely effective and they knew it.
- 18:32And he says this, verse 17, he says, not that I seek the gift.
- 18:37I'm not asking for anything from you, but I seek the fruit that increases to your credit.
- 18:44In other words, every time you give, God bounds a credit to you.
- 18:52You get credit for the fruit that you're investing in.
- 18:57I have received full payment and more.
- 18:59In other words, you have given beyond what I could ever want and desire or need.
- 19:05I'm done.
- 19:06You don't need to send me anything.
- 19:07And if you send anything, remember that is to your credit, not to mine.
- 19:13Why?
- 19:14Because he says, I am well supplied having received from Epaphroditus the gifts you sent.
- 19:24You've already taken care of me.
- 19:27A fragrant offering and a sacrifice acceptable and pleasing to God.
- 19:32Look at this amazing statement he says after this.
- 19:35You see the heartbeat of a healthy church.
- 19:38It's one of the reasons that at Mount Eaton we are, we have committed to work hard at
- 19:46getting one third of our budget to missions.
- 19:52We want the gospel everywhere, not only here in our backyard, but we want it everywhere.
- 20:00Now Paul says this, verse 19, because he sees the heartbeat concern, the reality of the
- 20:09people of Philippi, he gives this encouragement.
- 20:12And my God, because you have given this offering, this fragrant offering, a sacrifice acceptable
- 20:20and pleasing to God, my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches and
- 20:26glory in Christ Jesus.
- 20:29And Paul states this, he absolutely knows that everything on the planet belongs to the
- 20:34living God, even the wicked are to do his will.
- 20:42Everything that happens on the earth, God is sovereign in control of all things.
- 20:47It is accomplishing his plan.
- 20:48If you have any questions about that, look at the Pharaoh.
- 20:52He hardens the Pharaoh's heart.
- 20:56I have raised you up so that my name would be great among the nations.
- 21:00That's sovereignty.
- 21:01I am the king, not you Pharaoh.
- 21:04And after that, I'm going to kill you.
- 21:06Because that's exactly what he does.
- 21:08He drowns him.
- 21:09You're like, well, that's a mean God.
- 21:12No, that's an amazing, powerful God, because only God deserves the glory.
- 21:16The chief end, the chief end, the chief and highest end of all mankind is to glorify God
- 21:23and to enjoy him forever.
- 21:27That's the chief end of man.
- 21:29Westminster, large catechism, question number one, if you have any questions.
- 21:36Now after that amazing, amazing statement that God will supply every need of yours according
- 21:43to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus, he leaves them with this encouraging statement
- 21:48on the way out of the letter to our God and father be glory forever and ever.
- 21:58There it is, chief end of man, to God be glory forever and ever.
- 22:03Amen.
- 22:05So be it and so be it.
- 22:08Greet every saint in Christ Jesus.
- 22:12Greet every saint.
- 22:14Thank you for being here.
- 22:17I greet you in the name of Jesus Christ and of God the father and of the precious Holy
- 22:22Spirit who has been given as a guarantee of our inheritance.
- 22:25I greet you in his name.
- 22:28Thank you.
- 22:29So Paul states here, and then he says, the brothers who are with me greet you.
- 22:38And all the saints greet you, especially those of Caesar's household.
- 22:46And then he leaves them with this last statement, in the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with
- 22:51your spirit.
- 22:54What an amazing letter.
- 22:55I mean, to be honest with you, when I read this letter, I go through this letter, I'm
- 23:00thinking out of all the letters, this is like the most encouraging letter.
- 23:06It's one of the reasons why James Montgomery Boyce and several others who have wrote commentaries
- 23:12on this letter called the letter of joy.
- 23:16Yes, it is a letter of joy.
- 23:20But I'm going to tell you this, when you read this letter, do you not walk away with do
- 23:27you walk away without seeing the amazing doctrine of the perseverance of the saints?
- 23:35Not only do we persevere in the reality of our eternity with him, we persevere every
- 23:40single day in our life with him.
- 23:45So I really look at Philippians as the letter of the perseverance of the saints.
- 23:50If you want to learn to persevere, read the letter.
- 23:55Let's pray.
- 23:56Father, I want to thank you so much for your faithfulness and goodness.
- 23:58Thank you, in that you are just so good.
- 24:03Thank you for the families that are here.
- 24:06Thank you for the little ones that have come.
- 24:08Thank you for the baptisms that have been accomplished in your name.
- 24:11Thank you that you are high and lifted up and you have made a promise that if you're
- 24:15lifted up, you would draw all men unto you.
- 24:17We thank you that you have given your life as a sacrifice for many.
- 24:23And Lord, we are reminded of this amazing day when you have walked into your precious
- 24:30city riding on a donkey as king.
- 24:37You are the king.
- 24:38You are the king of kings and you will remain the sovereign king for all eternity.
- 24:45No one reigns but you.
- 24:47Lord, we thank you and praise you.
- 24:49Reign in our hearts and help us, Lord, to sanctify you as Lord.
- 24:53In Jesus' name, amen.
