- 0:02Speaker 1: Welcome to the Wired to Hunt podcast, your home for
- 0:06Speaker 1: deer hunting news, stories and strategies, and now your host,
- 0:11Speaker 1: Mark Kenyon. Welcome to the Wired to Hunt podcast. I'm
- 0:16Speaker 1: your host, Mark Kenyan. This is episode number two hundred
- 0:19Speaker 1: and thirty and today the show we have back for
- 0:22Speaker 1: the third year in a row, our radio mini series
- 0:26Speaker 1: in which we are getting from the field updates from
- 0:28Speaker 1: all across the country on the latest and dear behavior,
- 0:31Speaker 1: activity and conditions. All right, welcome back to the Wired
- 0:49Speaker 1: to Hunt podcast, brought to you by Onyx, and today
- 0:54Speaker 1: we are here for the third season of our radio
- 0:58Speaker 1: mini series. We started this back in two thousands sixteen.
- 1:02Speaker 1: It had rave reviews. We've kept it going and we
- 1:05Speaker 1: are back now. I'm excited. And for those who are
- 1:10Speaker 1: not familiar, we have Spencer Newhart. You probably know Spencer
- 1:14Speaker 1: by now, but if not, he's a producer with the
- 1:16Speaker 1: show and helps us run Runt Radio. And Spencer, you're back.
- 1:20Speaker 1: Can you give us the once more the quick rundown
- 1:23Speaker 1: of what we've got going on in these episodes, what
- 1:25Speaker 1: we can expect here today and in the future. So
- 1:29Speaker 1: with each episode, uh, these will come out once a
- 1:32Speaker 1: week in the fall. All the way through January, and
- 1:35Speaker 1: we're gonna be talking to hunters from across the nation,
- 1:38Speaker 1: people who I really respect their opinion on white tails
- 1:42Speaker 1: and want to hear about what they're seeing. And so
- 1:45Speaker 1: I'm gonna talk to them and interview them and bring you, guys,
- 1:48Speaker 1: um you know the intel that I think is super
- 1:51Speaker 1: relevant about what they're seeing for buck activity and hopefully
- 1:54Speaker 1: make it a piece of the puzzle for when you're
- 1:56Speaker 1: out haunting this fall. And if you're trying to say
- 1:59Speaker 1: between a couple of stand locations, uh, you know, maybe
- 2:02Speaker 1: something can be pulled from these thirty minute podcasts that
- 2:06Speaker 1: will help you decide on you know, what the deer
- 2:08Speaker 1: might be doing. Well, I sure as hell hope that's
- 2:11Speaker 1: the case, because I need a little bit of help.
- 2:13Speaker 1: I've been hunt in the last three nights, haven't got
- 2:16Speaker 1: it done yet. Do you have some information with our
- 2:19Speaker 1: guests today that's gonna help me put narrow in Montana?
- 2:21Speaker 1: Dere I. I think this will be pretty helpful because
- 2:25Speaker 1: of the four hunters we talked to today, two of
- 2:28Speaker 1: them tagged out September two kill and in August thirty
- 2:32Speaker 1: feet kill. So you'll have to listen and see who
- 2:34Speaker 1: we talked to that tagged out there, and we start
- 2:37Speaker 1: in Nebraska with Derek Lininger from the Lindsay Way. Then
- 2:40Speaker 1: we talked to Terry Hires from Blackwater Hunting Club in
- 2:43Speaker 1: South Carolina. Then we go to North Dakota and talk
- 2:46Speaker 1: to David g Arizo from Tagging Brigg and then we
- 2:48Speaker 1: talked to Josh Honeycutt from real tree dot Com in Kentucky. Nice.
- 2:53Speaker 1: I like it. We got kind of west, We've got
- 2:55Speaker 1: the middle of the country, we got the South. Good
- 2:58Speaker 1: job on that Spencer, Thank you. Now, Now what everyone's
- 3:02Speaker 1: wondering though, I just spilled the beans and told everyone
- 3:05Speaker 1: I haven't filled my Montana tag yet. Um, but is
- 3:09Speaker 1: Lieutenant Dan dead? Have you killed Lieutenant Dan yet? I
- 3:13Speaker 1: have not killed him. I've haunted two out of the
- 3:15Speaker 1: last three nights since opener and have yet to lay
- 3:19Speaker 1: my eyes on him. So we will see how that goes.
- 3:22Speaker 1: But I am not super confident right now. But it's
- 3:25Speaker 1: it's just a lot of fun to be out there
- 3:26Speaker 1: and early September like this. It's just totally different, um
- 3:30Speaker 1: on all your senses. So I'm having fun either way.
- 3:33Speaker 1: And even if I don't kill Lieutenant Dan in early
- 3:35Speaker 1: September here, I don't think that's going to close a
- 3:38Speaker 1: book on on me getting a chance at that year. Well,
- 3:41Speaker 1: I have lots and lots of questions about what You've
- 3:43Speaker 1: been trying to do so far, and I've got a
- 3:45Speaker 1: lot to share about what I've been up to so far, UM,
- 3:47Speaker 1: But we're gonna save that stuff for the main podcast
- 3:50Speaker 1: this week because on Thursday's episode, you, me, and Further
- 3:55Speaker 1: are all going to spend the entire podcast talking about
- 3:58Speaker 1: how our haunts have been going, what we've been doing,
- 4:00Speaker 1: what we've been trying, what's working. UM. Josh actually just
- 4:04Speaker 1: got to North Dakota today, so he's gonna start hunting tonight,
- 4:07Speaker 1: so we'll have two hunts in the books by the
- 4:09Speaker 1: time we record. UM, so last to share there. But
- 4:14Speaker 1: I guess can I spend my typical or your typical
- 4:18Speaker 1: question back at you really quick and just see in
- 4:21Speaker 1: South Dakota so far, how has the movement been at
- 4:23Speaker 1: a high level? Without giving away two men too much,
- 4:26Speaker 1: I I don't have a ton of intel from my hunts.
- 4:29Speaker 1: I'm hunting a fairly closed off area where I don't
- 4:34Speaker 1: have a huge view of, um, you know, like the
- 4:37Speaker 1: bean field that I'm hunting around, so my observations might
- 4:42Speaker 1: not be a great representation of what's actually going on.
- 4:45Speaker 1: But the weather right now looks really good for early September.
- 4:50Speaker 1: Like this, this is what you would want. It's it's
- 4:52Speaker 1: a cold front right now, and that's going to go
- 4:54Speaker 1: through all the way early next week. And so I
- 4:57Speaker 1: would say it's it's pretty good right now, probably a
- 5:00Speaker 1: seven or eight, But I don't have great intel. How
- 5:03Speaker 1: about you, Mark, what would you say? In Montana? Yeah, well,
- 5:06Speaker 1: it's been probably like an eight or nine. I mean
- 5:08Speaker 1: it's been really good. And I don't think that's because
- 5:11Speaker 1: of any kind of weather factor yet, because it's been
- 5:13Speaker 1: pretty hot. Um. But I've found this little tucked away
- 5:18Speaker 1: a couple of pieces I've tucked away public land that
- 5:20Speaker 1: are just really hard to get to that I just
- 5:21Speaker 1: don't think anyone ever goes to. And because of that,
- 5:25Speaker 1: these deer are very unpressured, very comfortable. Um. And I've
- 5:28Speaker 1: also found the right food sources. So because of that,
- 5:31Speaker 1: seeing great activity, and just haven't quite been able to
- 5:37Speaker 1: get everything put together. But but it's looking really good.
- 5:40Speaker 1: So probably an eight or nine. And as you mentioned,
- 5:42Speaker 1: that cold from that hit today, so it's gonna be
- 5:45Speaker 1: really good today and tomorrow, I think with those temperatures
- 5:47Speaker 1: dropping high BEARO metric pressure. UM, so I feel I
- 5:51Speaker 1: feel pretty good about things, about as good as I
- 5:53Speaker 1: could ask for. So things are? Things are lining up nicely?
- 5:57Speaker 1: Anything anything different? If you had to like summarize or
- 6:01Speaker 1: cliff note what the rest of the guys have told
- 6:03Speaker 1: you so far? Is that kind of what everyone's been saying?
- 6:05Speaker 1: Or are we unique? No, a lot of people are,
- 6:09Speaker 1: you know, around that seven or eight they feel for
- 6:11Speaker 1: what the bucket activity has been and a very similar
- 6:14Speaker 1: number for what they think it's going to be here. Um,
- 6:16Speaker 1: we're kind of seeing some unique weather across the country
- 6:19Speaker 1: and so that's playing a factor for what some of
- 6:22Speaker 1: these guys are saying. UM. But they also have a
- 6:24Speaker 1: lot of good food sources available. Um. And they've been
- 6:27Speaker 1: doing pretty vanilla setups for the most part too, UM,
- 6:31Speaker 1: kind of your typical early season field edge set up
- 6:35Speaker 1: or hunting over water. So there are still some intricacies
- 6:39Speaker 1: though to hunting this kind of year. And then they
- 6:42Speaker 1: can pick up on some of those things from these
- 6:44Speaker 1: four interviews. Awesome, Well, anything else we need to cover
- 6:47Speaker 1: before you can take it away? With the interviews, I
- 6:50Speaker 1: don't think. So let's get to our first guest all right.
- 6:54Speaker 1: Before we get to our first update, though, let's take
- 6:56Speaker 1: a break for a word from our sponsors at white
- 6:58Speaker 1: Tail Properties. This week. With white Tail Properties, we are
- 7:03Speaker 1: joined by Tom James, a land specialist out of Central Indiana,
- 7:07Speaker 1: and Tom is going to be telling us about what
- 7:09Speaker 1: to look for when your goal is to flip a property. Okay,
- 7:14Speaker 1: great question. Um First and foremost, looking at a good
- 7:17Speaker 1: county in your state, or even a good part of
- 7:19Speaker 1: the county that is known for producing better quality deer,
- 7:23Speaker 1: and that's typically easily found out in the in the
- 7:26Speaker 1: state's record book program, So those counties are typically more
- 7:31Speaker 1: highly sought after by buyers um as opposed to you know,
- 7:35Speaker 1: maybe counties that are off out of that parameter. So
- 7:38Speaker 1: number one, a good county, maybe even a better part
- 7:41Speaker 1: of the county that is known for producing better deer. Secondly,
- 7:44Speaker 1: I would look for property that you can pick up
- 7:47Speaker 1: right at market value and slightly under market value, obviously
- 7:50Speaker 1: as a home run, but make sure you do your homework,
- 7:53Speaker 1: find out what the comps and local local land is
- 7:55Speaker 1: selling for in that mixed recreational ground and that would
- 7:59Speaker 1: be timber and maybe some pasture, some tillable ground mixed in.
- 8:03Speaker 1: So number two good value at at the current market price,
- 8:06Speaker 1: and number three look at uh sometimes. An often overlooked
- 8:10Speaker 1: aspect of timber that people don't know a lot about
- 8:13Speaker 1: is um the quality of the hardwood species that are
- 8:16Speaker 1: on the property. If you can find eighteen inch and
- 8:20Speaker 1: larger diameter trees in their specifically white oaks, red oaks, walnut, cherry, um,
- 8:26Speaker 1: sugar maple, the white oak market is extremely hot right now,
- 8:30Speaker 1: and anything above that is gonna that size range is
- 8:34Speaker 1: going to return dividends that you could use the applying
- 8:37Speaker 1: to paying the property back off and also doing some
- 8:39Speaker 1: great habitat work in the process by opening up the
- 8:42Speaker 1: canopy and getting some good habitat work going on in there.
- 8:45Speaker 1: If you'd like to learn more and to see the
- 8:47Speaker 1: properties that Tom currently has listed for sale, visit white
- 8:51Speaker 1: Tail properties dot com. Backslash James. That's j. A. M. E.
- 8:56Speaker 1: S alright, and joining me on the line first is
- 9:00Speaker 1: Derek lining Or of Nebraska from the Lindsay Way. Now, Derek,
- 9:04Speaker 1: on a scale of one to ten, what would you
- 9:06Speaker 1: say the buck activity has been lately? Oh, lately, I'd
- 9:10Speaker 1: say this last week it's been uh, probably seven out
- 9:13Speaker 1: of ten it's hit or miss. I've been uh. This
- 9:16Speaker 1: time of year, I really plan on the first six
- 9:19Speaker 1: days of hunting season to uh capitalize because I leave
- 9:25Speaker 1: that seventh eighth to get down to Georgia with the
- 9:28Speaker 1: Jeff and David to uh hit the Georgian Georgia opener.
- 9:32Speaker 1: So I really plan all my food plots and everything
- 9:35Speaker 1: around these first six days. And ever since Nebraska opened
- 9:39Speaker 1: their season up on September one, it's it's helped a lot,
- 9:42Speaker 1: you know, get those bucks closer to velvet and they're
- 9:46Speaker 1: still on their summer patterns. So right now, uh clover
- 9:50Speaker 1: this first week. Actually the last four years, me and
- 9:53Speaker 1: my wife have killed a deer on this exact same
- 9:55Speaker 1: plot in uh out of the same tree stand, four
- 9:59Speaker 1: years in a row. And so I would say, clover,
- 10:02Speaker 1: uh this first week. If you don't have any beans around, beans,
- 10:05Speaker 1: I think with trump clover, but in a section that
- 10:07Speaker 1: I have, there's no other food besides my clover plot
- 10:11Speaker 1: and a little off alfa, and I strategized and cut
- 10:15Speaker 1: my clover about two weeks ago so i'd have a
- 10:17Speaker 1: good regrowth and Uh, it paid off. Well. You killed
- 10:22Speaker 1: an awesome buck there on the second sid of the
- 10:25Speaker 1: season four. You in September two, tell us a little
- 10:27Speaker 1: bit about that buck and about that hunt, you bet.
- 10:32Speaker 1: So it's a deer that my son Cole called Slade.
- 10:36Speaker 1: It's off a superhero movie, I guess, but uh, I'm
- 10:39Speaker 1: not familiar with that one. But he called it Slade,
- 10:41Speaker 1: and so I went with it. But there was a
- 10:43Speaker 1: last year was a three year old, and uh in
- 10:45Speaker 1: my area, you know, Jeff and David always preached five
- 10:48Speaker 1: years or old there. But obviously they're their properties are
- 10:51Speaker 1: a little well, more well managed and have better neighbors
- 10:54Speaker 1: in the area where I live in southeast Nebraska, about
- 10:56Speaker 1: twenty minutes from Lincoln, so it's very heavily populated area.
- 11:00Speaker 1: I have actually have about six acres of state you know,
- 11:04Speaker 1: public ground across the road for me and a lot
- 11:07Speaker 1: of uh if it's brown, it's down neighbors. So if
- 11:10Speaker 1: a deer gets to four for me, it's it's uh,
- 11:12Speaker 1: it's considered a five year old in my area and
- 11:14Speaker 1: in my opinion and whatnot. So you kind of I
- 11:17Speaker 1: set my age structure based on, you know, the situations
- 11:20Speaker 1: that I have here, but uh, but no, it was
- 11:23Speaker 1: it's been raining since Saturday night, opening night. It was
- 11:26Speaker 1: raining on me the whole time, and the deer moved
- 11:29Speaker 1: a little bit, but I didn't see any bucks, and
- 11:31Speaker 1: the bucks, the buck that I shot, actually didn't even
- 11:34Speaker 1: show up on camera that night. I run spartan cell
- 11:36Speaker 1: camera on this clover plot, and uh, always with an
- 11:40Speaker 1: easterly wind, it didn't matter if it was southeast northeast,
- 11:44Speaker 1: any easterly wind, he would usually show up in daylight.
- 11:46Speaker 1: But Saturday night, opening night that wind, and uh, there
- 11:51Speaker 1: was not much of a wind. It was just uh
- 11:53Speaker 1: kind of calm, and I've noticed that deer don't like
- 11:55Speaker 1: to move when it's calmer in my area. But and
- 11:58Speaker 1: then the rain held him back. But the next day,
- 12:00Speaker 1: Saturday or Sunday, when I killed him, there's a nice
- 12:04Speaker 1: twelve twelve mom our wind and uh, straight out of
- 12:08Speaker 1: the east, and it was a little bit of a
- 12:09Speaker 1: cooler wind, and I just felt right. And the rain
- 12:13Speaker 1: had it rained all afternoon up until the last two hours,
- 12:16Speaker 1: and I think once we got that break, they got
- 12:18Speaker 1: up on their feet and he was coming to a
- 12:21Speaker 1: plot about eight fift with another buck that's a five
- 12:24Speaker 1: year old that I had, and uh, they came walking
- 12:27Speaker 1: down the trail at eight oh five, so a little earlier,
- 12:29Speaker 1: and stopped at twenty six yards and I was able
- 12:32Speaker 1: to make a good shot and recover them pretty quick.
- 12:35Speaker 1: That was an awesome dear. No matter where you're at her,
- 12:38Speaker 1: what kind of property hunts. So you know, I'd be
- 12:41Speaker 1: static with a September second buck like that. Now you
- 12:44Speaker 1: touched on it a little bit there talking about that hunts.
- 12:47Speaker 1: But you guys have had some unique weather as of late.
- 12:49Speaker 1: Tell me a little bit about those monsoon like conditions
- 12:52Speaker 1: that you've experienced in Nebraska. Yeah, so since uh, since
- 12:57Speaker 1: let's see Saturday evening, it's either rain between one and
- 13:02Speaker 1: five inches in some of the area every single day.
- 13:05Speaker 1: So and it's it's coming down right now again and
- 13:07Speaker 1: we're almost that three inches just from last night. So
- 13:10Speaker 1: it's been NonStop rain and the forecast throughout the day
- 13:14Speaker 1: starting on you know when I was checking the weather
- 13:16Speaker 1: last Saturday or on Saturday, you know, looking at this
- 13:19Speaker 1: whole week, you know, the only week that I had
- 13:21Speaker 1: to hunt solid before I start traveling in filming Jeff
- 13:23Speaker 1: and David, Uh, it was rain every night and so
- 13:26Speaker 1: I was a little nervous, and uh, thank god, you know,
- 13:30Speaker 1: the one night that I I killed it, it didn't rain,
- 13:33Speaker 1: So thank the Lord that you know, I got that opportunity.
- 13:36Speaker 1: But yeah, it looks like rain NonStop. And uh, Kyle
- 13:39Speaker 1: Carter or the other producer for US and land manager
- 13:42Speaker 1: over at the at Iowa, the Iowa farm, he actually
- 13:45Speaker 1: sat the other night and his brother's truck from when
- 13:48Speaker 1: he got in the treat and got out, his brother's
- 13:50Speaker 1: truck had water up to the headlights. So it's it's
- 13:53Speaker 1: been NonStop rain here and it's it's gonna kill the
- 13:57Speaker 1: deer movement for sure. I actually had the uck that
- 14:00Speaker 1: runs with the one that I had harvested the other night.
- 14:03Speaker 1: He was on camera at three am when it stopped raining.
- 14:05Speaker 1: So I think if a guy can get some breaks
- 14:09Speaker 1: at the you know, the magic hour in the evenings,
- 14:13Speaker 1: that they're gonna be really good these next couple of days.
- 14:15Speaker 1: But it's it's not looking like the rain is gonna
- 14:18Speaker 1: stop for the next three days going forward. Then in
- 14:21Speaker 1: this next week or so, what do you think that
- 14:23Speaker 1: buck moon is going to be on a scale of
- 14:24Speaker 1: one to ten in Nebraska? In Nebraska, I think you
- 14:28Speaker 1: know the movement's it's still gonna be good. You're still
- 14:30Speaker 1: gonna want to hunt if you've got good green beans.
- 14:32Speaker 1: Yet there's depending on when the farmer got the beans
- 14:35Speaker 1: in your area. If you've got a nice spot close
- 14:37Speaker 1: to bedding or a hidden area that you know near
- 14:40Speaker 1: some good bedding in timber, that he can still kill
- 14:44Speaker 1: him on the greens. And if we get some cool fronts.
- 14:47Speaker 1: I think tomorrow there's actually it's supposed to drop down
- 14:49Speaker 1: into the sixties, high sixties, lower seventies, So I think
- 14:52Speaker 1: these next couple of days, if it stops raining, a
- 14:55Speaker 1: guy can really capitalize if he hunts, if he's got
- 14:58Speaker 1: some good green plots, or if he's got good good
- 15:00Speaker 1: green beans, that if he's got a buck that he
- 15:03Speaker 1: knows is in the area, he could have a good chance.
- 15:05Speaker 1: But there is also a lot of beans starting to
- 15:07Speaker 1: turn in the southeast corner Nebraska. So I've noticed as
- 15:11Speaker 1: soon as those beans turn a little bit, I mean
- 15:13Speaker 1: automatically the deer shut off. So if you've got a
- 15:15Speaker 1: good rat gratish plot or any sort of good green
- 15:19Speaker 1: clover plot or a nice off off the field, you
- 15:21Speaker 1: can hunt. I would definitely camping out over those the
- 15:23Speaker 1: next couple of days. Yeah, so I think, you know,
- 15:26Speaker 1: this next five days, it's supposed to stop raining Friday,
- 15:30Speaker 1: and then into the weekend it's supposed to you know,
- 15:31Speaker 1: get some better weather. So I think, you know, anywhere
- 15:34Speaker 1: from a seven to a ten out of ten these
- 15:37Speaker 1: next couple of days, if the rain stops the movement,
- 15:39Speaker 1: the bucks are just starting to shed, they're still you know,
- 15:42Speaker 1: I think they've still got a good week or so
- 15:44Speaker 1: of summer movement and before they start getting hard horn
- 15:49Speaker 1: brain and moving all over all over the county. Congrats
- 15:53Speaker 1: again on the great deer and thanks for joining me, Derek.
- 15:55Speaker 1: I look forward to seeing some little lindsay Way work
- 15:58Speaker 1: this fall, all right, Thank you, sir, all right, and
- 16:03Speaker 1: joining us on the line. Next is Terry Hires from
- 16:06Speaker 1: Blackwater Hunting Club in South Carolina. Now, Terry, what would
- 16:11Speaker 1: you say the buck activities ben Leley on the scale
- 16:14Speaker 1: of one to ten, well, one to ten if you're
- 16:17Speaker 1: talking about it, you know, a week or so ago,
- 16:19Speaker 1: we were probably up there around i'd say around seven percent,
- 16:24Speaker 1: maybe eight. Now, uh, seems like after these bucks shed
- 16:27Speaker 1: the velvet, we go into a little bit low and
- 16:30Speaker 1: we're we're probably around the five scale on the scale
- 16:34Speaker 1: of five. And you know, and I don't know what
- 16:36Speaker 1: the reason for it, but it seems like when these
- 16:38Speaker 1: bucks shed their shed their velvet, they just they start
- 16:41Speaker 1: splitting up a little bit and um, you know, start
- 16:44Speaker 1: rubbing trees and but but they're not near as active.
- 16:47Speaker 1: Um is generally only in the late September early October
- 16:52Speaker 1: before they uh start getting moving a lot. You know,
- 16:56Speaker 1: in this part of the country, we we've got eleven
- 16:58Speaker 1: thousand acres were only on eight people a day and
- 17:01Speaker 1: um we probably said me five percent wooded and the
- 17:05Speaker 1: rest of its agriculture and most of that being peanuts
- 17:08Speaker 1: caught and corn, uh soy beans, that type stuff. Now,
- 17:12Speaker 1: you guys have the unique opportunity to hunt starting August
- 17:16Speaker 1: fifteenth there in South Carolina. How is the hunting change
- 17:20Speaker 1: from August fifteenth until now? Do those setups look similar?
- 17:24Speaker 1: Are you hunting a lot of the same patterns that
- 17:26Speaker 1: that those deer head back? Then? We do hunt the
- 17:30Speaker 1: same patterns. And you know, we're a little different than
- 17:34Speaker 1: some states because we can, you know, because we can
- 17:36Speaker 1: put out corn and that type stuff, and our our
- 17:39Speaker 1: road systems, you know, we were pretty flat with our
- 17:42Speaker 1: road system. Uh, you know pretty much you can every
- 17:46Speaker 1: three or four yards you can drive driving. You know,
- 17:49Speaker 1: if a deer runs off, if you try them, you
- 17:50Speaker 1: can get into another road. So you know, we don't
- 17:53Speaker 1: have to put the hunters out and uh, you know
- 17:56Speaker 1: routy man, we can basically drive right to our stand.
- 17:59Speaker 1: That's a big sparse it it helps, you know, with
- 18:02Speaker 1: the human scent um, you know, we can we can try.
- 18:06Speaker 1: I've seen some talk lately of hurricanes are on Florida,
- 18:10Speaker 1: and you know that's always a threat to you guys
- 18:12Speaker 1: are in South Carolina. How does that affect the deer hunting?
- 18:15Speaker 1: When those hurricanes started moving up the coast. Well, you know,
- 18:20Speaker 1: weather always, you know, a change in weather can be
- 18:23Speaker 1: a good, good thing. I mean, we get these these
- 18:26Speaker 1: showers in here and cool things off. You know, these deer,
- 18:29Speaker 1: I mean they're great. We're reading this weather, so you
- 18:33Speaker 1: know it usually it usually helps us. Now if it
- 18:36Speaker 1: gets rain and nasty and it'll shut them down for
- 18:38Speaker 1: a while, and as soon as it you know, kind
- 18:40Speaker 1: of clears back up, they'll they'll turn back on. And
- 18:43Speaker 1: of course, I think most people know with the deer hunting,
- 18:46Speaker 1: especially when you get into the cool weather. If you
- 18:48Speaker 1: if you get a rain and a good rain, and
- 18:52Speaker 1: after that it cools down the next day and it
- 18:54Speaker 1: clears up. Man, that's that's just jimmy. When when they're
- 18:57Speaker 1: on for sure we'll going ward than in this next
- 19:00Speaker 1: week or so. What do you think that buck activity
- 19:03Speaker 1: is going to be on a scale of one to ten?
- 19:06Speaker 1: Well in the next week or two, Well will still
- 19:09Speaker 1: be in the September. I mean it should get better
- 19:12Speaker 1: if if if we're around the five or six, now
- 19:15Speaker 1: get up there, six, six and a half. How wouldn't
- 19:18Speaker 1: want to put much more than a seven because I
- 19:20Speaker 1: don't want to miss lead anybody on that possibly eight,
- 19:24Speaker 1: but you really just don't say the good buck numbers. Uh,
- 19:28Speaker 1: it's see in a plasta seven mark to probably get
- 19:32Speaker 1: into um like I said about the fifth to ten
- 19:36Speaker 1: to October. All right, Well, thanks for joining me, Terry,
- 19:40Speaker 1: and good luck to your hunters there at the black
- 19:42Speaker 1: Water Hunting Lodge. Thank you, Spence, I appreciate the coal.
- 19:49Speaker 1: Joining us on the line. Next is David Gizo from
- 19:51Speaker 1: Team Tagging Brigg in North Dakota. Now, David, what would
- 19:55Speaker 1: you say the buck activity has been lately on a
- 19:57Speaker 1: scale one to ten. Honestly, this last week i'd probably
- 20:02Speaker 1: say it was it was about a six out of
- 20:04Speaker 1: ten UM. I actually I got lucky and shot a
- 20:07Speaker 1: buck on opening night of North Dakota season on Friday.
- 20:12Speaker 1: But since then the buck activity has gone pretty nocturnal.
- 20:17Speaker 1: On the bucks at least that we're observing, seems to
- 20:20Speaker 1: be splitting up a bit. We had, we've had a
- 20:22Speaker 1: couple that have turned hard horn, so I think you know,
- 20:26Speaker 1: their hormones are kicking in, um, They're starting to feel
- 20:28Speaker 1: a little bit different, and the bachelor groups right now
- 20:32Speaker 1: are starting to split up a little bit. On top
- 20:34Speaker 1: of which, the weather up here has been average to
- 20:39Speaker 1: a little bit warmer um so the daily activity in
- 20:42Speaker 1: general for the deer, because it hasn't been the greatest
- 20:45Speaker 1: over the past couple of days for sure. So that's
- 20:48Speaker 1: kind of where we're at right now, hoping that things
- 20:51Speaker 1: change over the next few days as we've got a
- 20:53Speaker 1: cold front rolling in here. Tell me a little bit
- 20:56Speaker 1: about that hunt where you killed that buck on August thirty. Yeah,
- 21:03Speaker 1: so we we actually we came up here probably three
- 21:06Speaker 1: weeks ago and set UM eight eight trail cameras up
- 21:10Speaker 1: and on this particular spot. We've had three what we
- 21:13Speaker 1: call shooter box four and a half plus year old
- 21:16Speaker 1: deer coming in on a pretty regular basis, so we
- 21:19Speaker 1: had higher hopes going into the hunt. Although like I said,
- 21:23Speaker 1: it's been a little bit warm in a few days
- 21:25Speaker 1: prior to the hunt. Um, there was not a whole
- 21:28Speaker 1: lot of buck activity. And honestly, I think we just
- 21:31Speaker 1: we just timed it up perfect on one of those
- 21:34Speaker 1: one of those nights where it was just right and
- 21:37Speaker 1: we saw a lot of deer. I mean we saw
- 21:39Speaker 1: probably ten to twelve year before we saw him, We
- 21:42Speaker 1: saw one of our other shooters before we saw Um.
- 21:46Speaker 1: I think we had we had two bucks that were
- 21:49Speaker 1: literally right under us for probably twenty minutes that really
- 21:53Speaker 1: kind of held us hostage in the stand for a
- 21:55Speaker 1: little bit. Um. But for whatever reason, these deer were
- 21:59Speaker 1: up on their feet early that night. Um, it was
- 22:02Speaker 1: a little bit cooler, and it was a little bit breezier. Uh.
- 22:06Speaker 1: But nonetheless, like I said, the deer were coming from
- 22:09Speaker 1: all different directions we were hunting, Uh, the edge of
- 22:12Speaker 1: a soybean field that basically connected to a big finger
- 22:16Speaker 1: of of a of a tree row, and the deer
- 22:19Speaker 1: typically come from the back side of this soybean field
- 22:23Speaker 1: out of these slews, and they worked their way through
- 22:25Speaker 1: the soybeans and then they just kind of feed up
- 22:28Speaker 1: and down the tree rows. Is what we've really observed
- 22:31Speaker 1: over the last couple of years coming up here. Honestly,
- 22:33Speaker 1: this has been one of our better spots over the
- 22:36Speaker 1: last few years. So that was gonna be our tactic
- 22:39Speaker 1: going into day one. And you know, it just so
- 22:42Speaker 1: happened that we got lucky and and one of those
- 22:45Speaker 1: shooter box came across the beans and literally read the script.
- 22:49Speaker 1: I mean he ended up yards um, made a perfect
- 22:53Speaker 1: double one shot and he fell within sight um and
- 22:56Speaker 1: a matter of a second. So it was, honestly, for me,
- 23:00Speaker 1: it was a dream true. I've I've never shot a
- 23:02Speaker 1: velvet box before, but think dear today along with shooting
- 23:06Speaker 1: the velvet box, so to to start off the season,
- 23:09Speaker 1: as you can imagine, we're on cloud nine right now. Yeah,
- 23:12Speaker 1: that was a textbook set up. It looked like the
- 23:15Speaker 1: shot was great. The set up was like your ideal
- 23:18Speaker 1: you know, early season stand location and and everything came
- 23:22Speaker 1: together for you. Guys can check out that video on
- 23:24Speaker 1: tagging Briggs facebook page and one of the cool things
- 23:28Speaker 1: about these guys and why I enjoy following them is
- 23:31Speaker 1: the quick turnaround time. Like you shot that deer on Friday,
- 23:34Speaker 1: and I think it was by Saturday you had you know,
- 23:37Speaker 1: fully edited produced video of that haunt up and and
- 23:41Speaker 1: so it's really unique to to what you guys are
- 23:44Speaker 1: doing now. I know you've been running some show came
- 23:47Speaker 1: is there for a while. Tell us a little bit
- 23:49Speaker 1: about what you've learned from from having those up for
- 23:51Speaker 1: the last month or so. You know, it seems like
- 23:55Speaker 1: we're in we're in that kind of finicky period right
- 23:57Speaker 1: now where the box are starting you kind of feel
- 24:01Speaker 1: their dominance. They're starting to a lot of them are
- 24:04Speaker 1: getting hard horned right now. Some of them may be
- 24:07Speaker 1: losing velvet, and they're starting to go from like bachelor
- 24:10Speaker 1: groups to like, I don't know if I want to
- 24:12Speaker 1: hang out with you anymore, you know what I mean.
- 24:14Speaker 1: So it's it's it can be a great time of
- 24:18Speaker 1: the year to hunt, and also it can be very
- 24:20Speaker 1: tough because some of the bucks we've been watching for
- 24:23Speaker 1: the last three weeks five days, and that's frustrating because
- 24:28Speaker 1: you know what you're you're anticipating this coming out here
- 24:33Speaker 1: and feeling good about coming out here, and all of
- 24:35Speaker 1: a sudden, you know, two to three of these other
- 24:37Speaker 1: shooters are just M I A. And so right now
- 24:41Speaker 1: what we're trying to do is just shift the trail
- 24:43Speaker 1: cameras a little bit um. You know, it could be
- 24:46Speaker 1: a hundred two hundred, three hundred yards one way or
- 24:49Speaker 1: the other, and all of a sudden that shooters buck
- 24:51Speaker 1: may pop up again, But right now it's just it
- 24:54Speaker 1: really seems like the bigger bucks at least are kind
- 24:57Speaker 1: of splitting off of the echelor groups, or at least
- 25:01Speaker 1: they're starting to and they're starting to kind of go
- 25:06Speaker 1: on their lonesome and and and do their own thing
- 25:08Speaker 1: as they shed their velvement. So it's like I said,
- 25:12Speaker 1: right now, we're just trying to play the weather and
- 25:15Speaker 1: uh and trying and get lucky again and get one
- 25:17Speaker 1: of these shooters coming out to one of our thoughts
- 25:19Speaker 1: going forward, Then in the next week or so, what
- 25:22Speaker 1: do you think that bucket activity is going to look
- 25:23Speaker 1: like on a scale of one to ten in North Dakota.
- 25:27Speaker 1: You know, I really think over the next couple of days,
- 25:30Speaker 1: for like specifically, it's gonna be probably right around that
- 25:34Speaker 1: eight out of ten mark. Um, I think the next
- 25:37Speaker 1: couple of days is going to be the best hunting
- 25:40Speaker 1: days of our whatever week to ten days up here,
- 25:44Speaker 1: because the weather has finally switched. So we had we
- 25:48Speaker 1: had temps in the high seventies, low eighties for the
- 25:51Speaker 1: first you know, three to four days of the hunting season,
- 25:55Speaker 1: and now we have highs in the upper sixties. It's
- 25:58Speaker 1: getting down to the orties at night. So as soon
- 26:01Speaker 1: as that sun goes down, I mean, it cools down
- 26:04Speaker 1: quick when you're in the stand, and I really think
- 26:07Speaker 1: that's gonna play a huge factor. Um. I am kind
- 26:11Speaker 1: of foreseeing that these somebody's box, some of these shooters
- 26:14Speaker 1: that we haven't seen in four to five days or so,
- 26:17Speaker 1: are gonna reappear and it and you know, we shouldn't
- 26:21Speaker 1: be hesitant hunting the spots that we've hunted over the
- 26:25Speaker 1: past couple of days where we haven't seen a lot,
- 26:28Speaker 1: because I think they're gonna return to those spots based
- 26:31Speaker 1: on you know, the water, with the weather patterns, the
- 26:33Speaker 1: pressure being high and all the overall cooler temperatures. Well,
- 26:38Speaker 1: great inside, David, thanks again for joining me. Congrats on
- 26:41Speaker 1: the velvet buck. I appreciate you having me on Spencer
- 26:46Speaker 1: thanks a lot alright and joining us on the podcast.
- 26:49Speaker 1: Last is Josh honey Cut with Real Tree dot Com
- 26:53Speaker 1: out of Kentucky. Now, Josh in Kentucky, what would you
- 26:56Speaker 1: say the buck activity has been lately on the scale
- 26:58Speaker 1: of one to ten. Uh, From what I could tell,
- 27:02Speaker 1: it's been like a free three and a half. It's
- 27:05Speaker 1: been pretty poor daylight activity so far. Um. You know,
- 27:09Speaker 1: there have been some people in Kentucky it's had some
- 27:11Speaker 1: early success I had to expect regardless of the temperature.
- 27:15Speaker 1: You know, there's always some success you know, that first
- 27:17Speaker 1: week of the season, just because of the patterns that
- 27:19Speaker 1: some of the deer are still in. Um. From my
- 27:22Speaker 1: perspective though, what I have seen for the first few
- 27:25Speaker 1: days of the season, UM, it's it's been a little
- 27:28Speaker 1: tougher this year than normal. We've got a lot of
- 27:31Speaker 1: patrons on this surties. The mass crop is a lot
- 27:34Speaker 1: heavier this year, and believe it or not, it's actually
- 27:37Speaker 1: started dropping already. UM. You know, there's uh so there's
- 27:42Speaker 1: a lot of challenges which you know heavy get mass
- 27:44Speaker 1: prop is good for the deer. Obviously that's good for
- 27:46Speaker 1: the deer. Uh. But it makes the hunt and tough,
- 27:48Speaker 1: and you know those those I've noticed a big shift.
- 27:51Speaker 1: You know, I do a lot of scouting for a
- 27:53Speaker 1: lot of trail cameras, and there was a huge shift
- 27:56Speaker 1: about a week ago, about five or six days before
- 27:59Speaker 1: the season harded. A lot of the deer that I've
- 28:01Speaker 1: been watching on the different properties that I hunt, they just, uh,
- 28:05Speaker 1: you know, immediately change all at once, within about forty
- 28:08Speaker 1: eight hours, um, not all of them, but a lot
- 28:11Speaker 1: of the beer that I've been keeping tabs on, they
- 28:13Speaker 1: just they changed their patterns up, you know, almost overnight.
- 28:16Speaker 1: So it's almost like that mass crop has started dropping,
- 28:20Speaker 1: I believe. And the temperatures have been really what's that
- 28:23Speaker 1: what's hurt us as much as anything, but had really
- 28:25Speaker 1: stagnant hot temperatures, no fluctuation whatsoever. And as as you know,
- 28:29Speaker 1: you know, that's that makes something tough. Under those circumstances
- 28:33Speaker 1: with warm weather and a big mass cup, big mass crop,
- 28:37Speaker 1: what would you say would be an ideal set up
- 28:39Speaker 1: right now? Then to get them ature buck on the ground.
- 28:43Speaker 1: You know, it's tough because you know, generally speaking for
- 28:45Speaker 1: this part of the country, you know, especially to the
- 28:48Speaker 1: places that I hunt, and uh, you know, you usually
- 28:52Speaker 1: can pretty much bank on those deer being in there
- 28:54Speaker 1: summer patterns that you've even been watching them on and
- 28:57Speaker 1: following them on, you know, in June, July, August. Uh,
- 29:01Speaker 1: they usually carry those into the first week at least
- 29:03Speaker 1: the first week of September. UH, sometimes as late as
- 29:07Speaker 1: the tenth of the fifteenth. So it's it's really made
- 29:09Speaker 1: it a little more difficult this year. UM. And you
- 29:12Speaker 1: you you gotta relearn the deer. You've got to relearn them.
- 29:15Speaker 1: You've gotta figure out what their new patterns are. UM.
- 29:18Speaker 1: I think a lot of those new patterns are. Uh,
- 29:20Speaker 1: they're hugging a little tighter to the beds. I don't
- 29:22Speaker 1: think they're getting up from their beds quite as early
- 29:24Speaker 1: of an afternoon because the hot temperatures. UM. I think
- 29:28Speaker 1: they're pretty much hugging and hugging the timber too because
- 29:31Speaker 1: of the mass crop, you know, and you know they're
- 29:34Speaker 1: already dropping. I've talked to a lot of people and
- 29:36Speaker 1: everybody's hearing acrens at the ground right now. So, UM,
- 29:41Speaker 1: it's that coming year where that shift happens. So you
- 29:43Speaker 1: gotta get back in the timber with them, because you know, uh,
- 29:46Speaker 1: for a lot of places around here. Up here can
- 29:48Speaker 1: pretty much stand up out of its bed and immediately
- 29:51Speaker 1: start eating uh eating mask. So uh, you just gotta
- 29:55Speaker 1: get in tight to the beds. You know. It's a
- 29:57Speaker 1: risk first reward type thing where you gotta you gotta
- 30:00Speaker 1: get in as tight as you can without bumping them.
- 30:02Speaker 1: But that's really what it's gonna take. And with these
- 30:05Speaker 1: hot temperatures, if you don't have it here that's moving
- 30:08Speaker 1: in daylight right now or at least in the afternoon. Um.
- 30:11Speaker 1: You know, it kind of goes against a lot of
- 30:13Speaker 1: the things that you hear that you read. Um. But
- 30:16Speaker 1: you know, hunting mornings can be productive early season as
- 30:19Speaker 1: long as you do it intelligently, into it wildly. So
- 30:22Speaker 1: if you were to do a morning set up, then
- 30:24Speaker 1: what would that look like? Well, it really depends on
- 30:27Speaker 1: the situation. Every every situation. There's certain farms that I
- 30:33Speaker 1: just would not hunt mornings this time of year simply
- 30:36Speaker 1: because you can't get in there without spook and deer.
- 30:38Speaker 1: But if you have a good entry and exit roots
- 30:40Speaker 1: that you can use uh to get into a spot, Uh,
- 30:45Speaker 1: that's that's gonna gets you to the tree s damn
- 30:48Speaker 1: without bumping dere um you know that might you know,
- 30:52Speaker 1: there's a lot of different scenarios out there, but one
- 30:54Speaker 1: particular scenario might be, uh, you know you're gonna be
- 30:57Speaker 1: closer to the beds you obviously you don't want to
- 30:59Speaker 1: get out almost set sources in the mornings because you're
- 31:02Speaker 1: gonna bump deer off. So you definitely want to be
- 31:04Speaker 1: back in the cuff, back in uh, back and cover
- 31:07Speaker 1: a little bit deeper than you normally would be. Uh,
- 31:09Speaker 1: you don't want to travel past um big food sources
- 31:13Speaker 1: on your way to this dand because you've risked off
- 31:15Speaker 1: the deer. So so it is tough, especially early season,
- 31:18Speaker 1: trying to get into a a stand location of a
- 31:22Speaker 1: morning without bumping deer. But if you've got a spot
- 31:24Speaker 1: that you think you can get to, um that's close
- 31:28Speaker 1: to a betting area, that might be a staging area.
- 31:31Speaker 1: It might be a you know, an oak flat that
- 31:33Speaker 1: deer travel through as they you know, go from bigger
- 31:35Speaker 1: food sources back to their betting areas. If you've got
- 31:38Speaker 1: to assist a situation like that or a similar scenario, uh,
- 31:41Speaker 1: it might pay to do something like that of a
- 31:43Speaker 1: morning right now. Ordinarily, right now we'd still find bachelor
- 31:47Speaker 1: groups hanging out together. Are you seeing that in Kentucky?
- 31:50Speaker 1: In I'll tell you, it's been a weird year for me. UM. Typically,
- 31:56Speaker 1: almost always our bachelor groups remain intact until about you know,
- 32:00Speaker 1: the middle of September anyway, you know, I usually don't
- 32:04Speaker 1: see the first bachelor groups breaking up until about September ten, twelve,
- 32:08Speaker 1: and some of them even hang around into you know,
- 32:11Speaker 1: the middle of September and even the end of September.
- 32:13Speaker 1: I have even thing which is obviously the other end
- 32:16Speaker 1: of the spectrum, But I've seen bachelor groups last into
- 32:18Speaker 1: the middle of October, which is which is rare too.
- 32:20Speaker 1: But this year it's been a little different. You know,
- 32:23Speaker 1: the deer have started breaking up a little bit more.
- 32:26Speaker 1: There's a particular deer I've been watching all summer long
- 32:29Speaker 1: because that's there that I wanted to target in that
- 32:32Speaker 1: deer just completely. He was on a heavy, heavy pattern,
- 32:35Speaker 1: consistent pattern up until about the last week, uh leading
- 32:39Speaker 1: up to this opening day. So up until about last
- 32:42Speaker 1: Monday or Tuesday, he was on a really consistent pattern
- 32:45Speaker 1: and then just changed overnight and he had been run
- 32:48Speaker 1: with two other bucks and that bachelor group split up
- 32:52Speaker 1: right whenever that Uh, that shift that changed, that transition happened,
- 32:58Speaker 1: and that deer has been running on his own for
- 33:01Speaker 1: the last week's per so. So those Batchelor groups, I think,
- 33:04Speaker 1: for whatever reason, they're but starting to bust up a
- 33:06Speaker 1: little bit earlier than they typically do this year. Going forward,
- 33:10Speaker 1: then this next week or so, what do you think
- 33:12Speaker 1: that bucket TV is going to be on a skill
- 33:14Speaker 1: of one to ten in Kentucky. I don't think it
- 33:17Speaker 1: gets any better than it is right now. Um. You know,
- 33:20Speaker 1: and there might be some people out there who are
- 33:22Speaker 1: seeing something completely different than I am. There might be
- 33:24Speaker 1: you know, they might be night and day. You know,
- 33:26Speaker 1: my situation is may be completely different from what others
- 33:29Speaker 1: are experiencing. UM. Hearing a lot of the same though.
- 33:32Speaker 1: But I don't think it gets any better. If anything,
- 33:35Speaker 1: I think it gets worse. Um, because you know, I've
- 33:38Speaker 1: looked at the forecast in the next ten days, it's
- 33:40Speaker 1: you know, consistent highs, consistent loads, there's hardly any variation
- 33:45Speaker 1: and temperature. The only thing that we really got going
- 33:47Speaker 1: for us in the next ten days is there's gonna
- 33:49Speaker 1: be a lot of weather events and there's a lot
- 33:51Speaker 1: of you know, you know, some people think you know
- 33:54Speaker 1: out there say that you know rain events will encourage
- 33:57Speaker 1: your movements, I'm gonna say they don't. Uh something else
- 33:59Speaker 1: can you been onto? Are these hurricanes that are coming
- 34:02Speaker 1: up through the golf Because if those hits just right,
- 34:06Speaker 1: that can give us a little bit of a cold shot,
- 34:08Speaker 1: a little bit of a cold front or dropping temperatures
- 34:11Speaker 1: as those passed through. So that's something to keeping on.
- 34:14Speaker 1: But if the temperatures remain staggnant and they stay hot, um,
- 34:18Speaker 1: it's just gonna be tough. And I'd say that dear
- 34:20Speaker 1: activity is gonna remain about us three or three and
- 34:22Speaker 1: a half and maybe at four best for the next few,
- 34:25Speaker 1: uh a few days leave, you know, up to the
- 34:27Speaker 1: next seven or ten days. Well, I hope things turn
- 34:30Speaker 1: around for you down there, and I always enjoy talking
- 34:32Speaker 1: to you and hearing your reports. Thanks for your time, Josh,
