- 0:11[SPEAKER_01]: What is up, everyone?
- 0:12[SPEAKER_01]: Welcome on in, suitors on SI, softball show, gettin' goin' here.
- 0:17[SPEAKER_01]: We're doin' this late afternoon evening here about seven, 10 on Memorial Day.
- 0:21[SPEAKER_01]: Hope everyone had a very happy, very safe Memorial Day.
- 0:26[SPEAKER_01]: This is probably finding your feed on Tuesday morning.
- 0:29[SPEAKER_01]: We'll do a little portal preview at the end.
- 0:31[SPEAKER_01]: So everyone just know this iteration is current as of seven, 10 PM Monday night, if it changes,
- 0:38[SPEAKER_01]: OklahomaCitters on SI.com is the website.
- 0:41[SPEAKER_01]: We'll tell you everything we know there, but I can't time travel in podcast form.
- 0:47[SPEAKER_01]: I can do many things that is not one of them, but that is okay.
- 0:50[SPEAKER_01]: Ryan Chapman here, joined by my good friend, my colleague Ryan Aver, Mr. Aver.
- 0:56[SPEAKER_01]: I come to you saying a weekend plans are a little bit different than what we thought they were going to be.
- 1:02[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it opened up just a little bit.
- 1:05[SPEAKER_00]: I actually had a buddy text me and asked me if I could go on a float trip up in Arkansas after he saw the result and knew that I might have a little bit more free time over the next couple weeks than I normally would.
- 1:21[SPEAKER_00]: It's just it's really weird.
- 1:23[SPEAKER_00]: We certainly didn't anticipate this.
- 1:25[SPEAKER_00]: We anticipated being, you know, full bore all the way through, you know, at least the first the June, if not into the champ series, but here we are in the off season.
- 1:38[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, as the inside the NBA crew would say, pedigastosers have gone fishing, they're going to have to be on the graphic that they put up there.
- 1:48[SPEAKER_01]: It's something that has not happened since 2015 that Oklahoma failed to make the Women's College World Series.
- 1:54[SPEAKER_01]: And it feels like Ryan, this is the official signal that
- 1:58[SPEAKER_01]: it was so weird that four years of absolute historic dominance, which you and I were there for every pitch of and that nothing takes away from that, but it was weird that at the time the Oklahoma was accomplishing something that's never happened in the sport before going back to back to back to back
- 2:16[SPEAKER_01]: everyone else in the country was catching up and it didn't feel like it because Oklahoma was dominating everyone going back to back to back to back but parody parody parody that's been the theme of college softball for the last five seasons and Oklahoma had been like literally the only program that that had not affected.
- 2:33[SPEAKER_01]: The parody arrived on super regional weekend in Norman Friday.
- 2:39[SPEAKER_01]: An absolute meltdown, which is really where Oklahoma lost the super regional.
- 2:44[SPEAKER_01]: Eleven denying losers after they went up five to one in the third inning.
- 2:48[SPEAKER_01]: Came back out Saturday.
- 2:49[SPEAKER_01]: Great showing seven one good stuff there and then Oklahoma never got going.
- 2:55[SPEAKER_01]: Six nothing shut out for the first time in three hundred and ninety nine games.
- 3:02[SPEAKER_01]: massive streak that stretched all the way back to the 20 was that the 2019 Women's College World series that it stretched back to.
- 3:10[SPEAKER_01]: Oklahoma did not get wrong rolled or anything like that.
- 3:13[SPEAKER_01]: So we'll copy and paste those notes over for another year.
- 3:16[SPEAKER_01]: But Ryan, Friday and Sunday as we left love fields, we were walking through the crowd to get to post game press conferences.
- 3:23[SPEAKER_01]: It was a very, very weird feelings.
- 3:24[SPEAKER_01]: I think there weren't many that kind of knew how to digest what they saw this past weekend.
- 3:29[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I think, you know, Friday was one thing, but the just the stun nature of things yesterday on Sunday was just incredible.
- 3:43[SPEAKER_00]: And, you know, not that everybody was stunned silent, but, you know, a lot of the talk is just what happened.
- 3:50[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, I think a lot of people might have, uh,
- 3:56[SPEAKER_00]: not understood or anticipated another game like Fridays like 11 to 9 where the offense does plenty but the pitching is just so bad and gets banged around but to get shut out with an offense that for most of the year
- 4:14[SPEAKER_00]: had been the best offense in college shop all history.
- 4:16[SPEAKER_00]: They tailed off near the end and you see LA sort of as put the foot down.
- 4:22[SPEAKER_00]: But that to me was the most surprising thing.
- 4:26[SPEAKER_00]: I know we wrote about sort of both sides of that, the pitching side and the hitting side, you know, over the last 24 hours.
- 4:34[SPEAKER_00]: But it's just stunning to think that a lineup that has
- 4:38[SPEAKER_00]: Ella Parker, Cassidy Pickering, Gabi Garcia, Kindle Wells, Isabella Immerling, and on and on, couldn't produce at least one run against a pitcher who came into the Super Regional, having thrown 12 innings all year, had only thrown 13 and a third, entering Sunday's game, hadn't started a game all year,
- 5:00[SPEAKER_00]: and she was lights out.
- 5:02[SPEAKER_00]: And if you would have told me that Mississippi State would get by OU with a picture other than fair cloth or gold.
- 5:13[SPEAKER_00]: And I think I want to said you were crazy, but the line at Delaney Everett was incredible.
- 5:19[SPEAKER_00]: And you know, an incredible story from her too, from the persistence of fighting through some injuries, especially early this season, to losing her dad about a year and a half ago, and then to have that performance on her parents wedding anniversary.
- 5:38[SPEAKER_00]: which was on Sunday was was just incredible and that's one of the, you know, one of those great stories that I'm sure we'll be talked about quite a bit on ESPN next week, but it's not a consolation for the sooner or so or, you know, wound up short of Oklahoma City for the first time like he said since 2015.
- 6:01[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I mentioned to you after the game Brian that Oklahoma has been the narrative driver for so long and they will always be and they'll continue to be that, but they have been on the other side of two kind of incredible stories here the last.
- 6:17[SPEAKER_01]: two years.
- 6:17[SPEAKER_01]: It didn't in their season a year ago, but the moment that they got sent to the losers bracket, it was taking Kavan, pitching through an incredible moment of loss with her grandmother and then you fast forward and Delaney's every, Delaney Everett story was an incredible human story and incredible story, but I think here's probably what happened.
- 6:38[SPEAKER_01]: And if I had to guess we go back
- 6:43[SPEAKER_01]: Georgia throws the picture that is the least amount of knowledge out on and we saw over and over again, how many times did they cut to the dugout and JT gas was having to like basically run the team through it in real time.
- 6:55[SPEAKER_01]: Patty Gassell after the game kind of admitted she didn't say that they didn't prepare for Delaney Everett but she kind of is like a not a joke but she was like Delaney Everett who that's kind of who we were thinking when they said that they're
- 7:12[SPEAKER_01]: Everything I think deservedly so was about page of gold and a little spare cloth and I think that Oklahoma sunk their teeth into every bit of gold and fair cop film.
- 7:21[SPEAKER_01]: You saw that with the way that they got to both of them, whether it be getting to fair cloth early on Friday and then Kindle Welsh is saying no page of gold we appreciate it but no thanks.
- 7:32[SPEAKER_01]: everything Oklahoma did just absolutely smoke through it on Saturday.
- 7:37[SPEAKER_01]: And I think that might be something that I wonder as we get throughout the off season of JT gas, so I'm patty gas, so kind of look at their processing go.
- 7:45[SPEAKER_01]: I understand there's a finite amount of time and a finite amount of resources, but in the both postseason spots, it certainly seems like the sooner's got got by a picture that they just weren't ready for.
- 7:57[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I don't think there's any
- 8:00[SPEAKER_00]: you're right on the preparation that they, you know, certainly focused their preparation on, uh, gold and fair cloth and that cost them, uh, with Delaney Everett, but I also think the other side of that is having just thrown 12 innings entering the weekend.
- 8:20[SPEAKER_00]: And they've got a pitching coach on the other side and Terran Moat McKinney, who is one of the best pitchers in college-saltball history.
- 8:30[SPEAKER_00]: And it's a whole lot easier to change up your any
- 8:36[SPEAKER_00]: anything that you have that can be, you know, any tendencies.
- 8:41[SPEAKER_00]: That's the word, sorry.
- 8:44[SPEAKER_00]: It's a holiday.
- 8:45[SPEAKER_00]: It's easier to change up tendencies and things like that when it's such a small sample size that you can really go against those fairly easily and leave teams confused,
- 8:59[SPEAKER_00]: I would have thought that Oklahoma in seven innings, you know, in getting through the lineup, most of three times, would have been able to, you know, figure out a way to get to or and string some things together, but they weren't.
- 9:15[SPEAKER_00]: And I think, you know, I asked Pat about this, yesterday,
- 9:20[SPEAKER_00]: They were the the hitters were pressing trying to do too much trying to hit five run home runs six run home runs and set of what's got them to this point, which is, you know, yes, they're going to get home runs, but concentrate on getting on base drawn walks.
- 9:37[SPEAKER_00]: and grinding out runs and then the home runs will come instead of focusing on hey we've got to hit the ball out of the ball park or really do too much in one at bat and I think that's something we saw pretty consistently but especially after kind of wells gets hit in the head in the the third inning and there's something else I want to talk about that later but
- 10:02[SPEAKER_00]: Right after that, it seemed like, oh, you got sped up a lot at the plate.
- 10:08[SPEAKER_00]: I think there were in the fourth and fifth innings, went down in order, but only one of those it bats lasted longer than two pitches.
- 10:18[SPEAKER_00]: And that one lasted three.
- 10:21[SPEAKER_00]: If I'm not mistaken, no four for excuse me.
- 10:24[SPEAKER_00]: And that just isn't what's made this offense,
- 10:30[SPEAKER_00]: go for most this year.
- 10:33[SPEAKER_00]: There have been exceptions to that.
- 10:36[SPEAKER_00]: Isabella, Emily, and Kendall Wells, the two hitters I think of, is really liking to jump on first pitches a lot.
- 10:44[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, we saw that with Wells in that bat that you're mentioning against gold on Friday.
- 10:54[SPEAKER_00]: But
- 10:56[SPEAKER_00]: It seemed like everybody was doing that, and it just didn't help them get into a rhythm offensively, and that's what Pat, I guess, talked about going into the weekend that they really needed to sort of feed off that and learn how to help the rest of their team within that bat instead of just going in for themselves.
- 11:15[SPEAKER_00]: And I think there was a lot of, and it's not selfishness.
- 11:19[SPEAKER_00]: I don't think.
- 11:21[SPEAKER_00]: But the result was the same that they were just trying to do too much and and pressing and that's what cost him.
- 11:28[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it seemed like a return to, if you remember guys back to the post game of the Arkansas game 2, where Patty got to talk to about like it's one thing to have your play and you have to have a recognition though of if Ryan's baton front of me and he is trying to sit change up and the change up comes pitch 2 and he flies out.
- 11:47[SPEAKER_01]: you might also want that pitch you and also want to be aggressive and go early but you also have to understand okay the batter in front of me just had a two-pitch it back the batter in front of them just had a two-pitch it back what we need to do is slow the game down we need to make the pitcher pitches many pitches possible you know the looks at it stressed out and that did not happen and I just really think that it all flipped as you said it in maybe not flipped as the right word because Oklahoma's not in control before that but
- 12:12[SPEAKER_01]: I think that there was still a calm and there was some energy at love's field.
- 12:16[SPEAKER_01]: That's always a scary situation at any time someone wears anything on the C-flap there and certainly with Kindle immediately her reaction.
- 12:23[SPEAKER_01]: I think that was something that any team would have been a little shell shot because it was scary.
- 12:28[SPEAKER_01]: I think that we were all watching that go and I don't know if she's just in pain because she just got hit in the jaw and the only way it's sometimes to get through that is to
- 12:40[SPEAKER_01]: You know, is she woozed around because it's like concussion protocol stuff like those are scary terrifying moments.
- 12:46[SPEAKER_01]: I think we've seen them in football where where that happens it certainly is that way in baseball and softball and
- 12:53[SPEAKER_01]: The crowd was into it and it almost got over cooked I think a little bit and then Mississippi State immediately gets the next out and that for a team that Sam Rickins had talked it out on Friday, there's no pressure on us.
- 13:07[SPEAKER_01]: Oklahoma's look three seed.
- 13:08[SPEAKER_01]: We're not supposed to be here.
- 13:10[SPEAKER_01]: cool.
- 13:11[SPEAKER_01]: That's the mentality they took in.
- 13:12[SPEAKER_01]: I think that that only kind of like fueled the Mississippi state dug out and they kind of slowly started to do it.
- 13:18[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, it's often just done to so many teams.
- 13:19[SPEAKER_01]: I didn't get to 10, but it was just like, hey, it's not five at once, but it's two here, one run shot here, two run shot here, and then suddenly you look up and go, this is this is multiplying quickly.
- 13:31[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, no doubt about it.
- 13:32[SPEAKER_00]: And I think you're right about things sort of uh,
- 13:36[SPEAKER_00]: You know, not, I don't know how to put it blowing up for Oklahoma a little bit in the reaction to the wells thing.
- 13:44[SPEAKER_00]: First of all, the linear effort is in no way trying to hit kind of wells in the face in that situation in particular, is they're trying to, you know, get her out there.
- 13:55[SPEAKER_00]: They don't want base runners in that situation.
- 13:59[SPEAKER_00]: And what was it?
- 14:00[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, one pitch, I think there.
- 14:04[SPEAKER_00]: So clearly, you know, balls get away.
- 14:08[SPEAKER_00]: People get hit.
- 14:09[SPEAKER_00]: And I also wonder if the,
- 14:12[SPEAKER_00]: a lot of the fans thought she'd been hit like up on the head rather than you know in the mask area but she was certainly woozy and stumbled a little bit you wouldn't think that getting hit right there would be a you know a concussion protocol type thing but anytime you get hit in the face like that it is a scary deal and you know for a team that I think in a lot of ways
- 14:41[SPEAKER_00]: I don't want to say lacking in leadership, but lacking in vocal leadership at times, just because a lot of the more experienced players on this team with the exception of Abbey Dayton and to some degree, I want to agbiani.
- 14:56[SPEAKER_00]: A lot of them are quiet, you know,
- 15:06[SPEAKER_00]: Kind of wells in a lot of ways, I mean, heck, if you're looking at, you know, who might be a captain on this team next year, you know, that's certainly a name that comes up.
- 15:17[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, you just look at the way she was leading the crowd during a review earlier in the game.
- 15:24[SPEAKER_00]: And then, you know, even later in the game, after she'd been hit in the face, after she re-eners, which was stunning, that she was able to come back in that quickly.
- 15:36[SPEAKER_00]: You know, the sort of emotional leader on this team, and that just took a lot out of them, I think, but also amped up that pressure that they were already feeling already, you know, showing, and then it, you know, got amped up to 11 after Kindle Wells took that ball to the face.
- 15:58[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and it's, it's, when you score zero runs, it's hard for me to look to the pitching staff and be like, you are the lone reason that this happened because you have to score runs.
- 16:09[SPEAKER_01]: You can go out there and pitch a no-no and suddenly go to eight, nine, ten.
- 16:13[SPEAKER_01]: But the pitching was not great.
- 16:15[SPEAKER_01]: Certainly on Friday, my little would chain you at look.
- 16:19[SPEAKER_01]: Mississippi State's lineup full of rites, Patty Gassel will tell you, Marla with Chagno, a rite, we're playing the matchup stuff like this.
- 16:25[SPEAKER_01]: At Patty Gassel is a Hall of Fame legendary coach.
- 16:30[SPEAKER_01]: Her engine roachah have forgotten more about softball than we will ever know.
- 16:35[SPEAKER_01]: But how you get to Sunday and a doer die game and don't just start your best picture, I don't know how that happens.
- 16:41[SPEAKER_01]: I think we've seen it all over the place all across Cotsoppaal, that sometimes you just get start looking at analytics too much, Kenny Atkinson, and you turn an O3, deficit in a series and go, and it literally where I had three of, that's what I felt like on Sunday.
- 16:56[SPEAKER_01]: The way the Audrey Larry came out on Saturday, she entered in relief on Sunday, so she clearly was available.
- 17:03[SPEAKER_01]: That to me was the most damning thing and it started on Friday.
- 17:08[SPEAKER_01]: Again, play the matchups pitch your best pitcher pitch your best pitcher We all know that my little Cheney has been much more comfortable as these Saturday pitchers So you're you're messing stuff up the last time we saw not Audrey Lauri star you tried to reorder things It was the SEC tournament that didn't go well
- 17:26[SPEAKER_01]: Um, so I don't know how that happens.
- 17:28[SPEAKER_01]: It's no guarantee that Laura would have gone out there and been shut down.
- 17:31[SPEAKER_01]: She's been the best picture on this staff.
- 17:33[SPEAKER_01]: It's not been like shut out, shut out, shut out, type stuff.
- 17:36[SPEAKER_01]: But I just don't know how that decision gets made.
- 17:39[SPEAKER_01]: Uh, when you, when you, like I get it, it's the right on a variety matchups.
- 17:42[SPEAKER_01]: You've played the matchups on Friday and they put 11 runs on the board.
- 17:47[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I mean,
- 17:50[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it's easy to go back and look at it at this point, but I mean, hey, it's even something we talked about in the press box on Friday, then on Saturday, then on Sunday when we got the lineup.
- 18:02[SPEAKER_00]: And, you know, I understand it with Whatchango and everything you said, absolutely holds true and you've got to imagine that was the thought process with Patty Gasseau, but I'll just allow he's been really good on Fridays to open series.
- 18:19[SPEAKER_00]: And, you know, she hasn't been as good coming out of the bullpen at times, especially, you know, in the middle of innings and things like that.
- 18:28[SPEAKER_00]: She's she's had moments of struggle.
- 18:30[SPEAKER_00]: We saw that on Friday.
- 18:31[SPEAKER_00]: You know, we saw that a little bit yesterday as well.
- 18:36[SPEAKER_00]: And.
- 18:37[SPEAKER_00]: You know, all year we've talked about pitching being a thing that really held this team back and ultimately like you said yesterday was about the hitting and not getting it done there, but if you get the pitching taking care of on Friday, you're not even in this situation where you have to worry about Sunday and then, you know, delaying the effort doesn't come into play nearly as much things like that.
- 19:02[SPEAKER_00]: It just.
- 19:04[SPEAKER_00]: takes a lot of pressure off of you.
- 19:06[SPEAKER_00]: And I think that the decision on Friday to me is the more glaring one.
- 19:13[SPEAKER_00]: But I was surprised that she didn't go back with Lauri even though I know Mississippi State's senior a lot at this point and and everything else.
- 19:22[SPEAKER_00]: But sometimes you got to go with strength versus strength versus trying to pick out your opponent's weaknesses.
- 19:29[SPEAKER_00]: And I think that's a
- 19:34[SPEAKER_01]: It's just kind of, it's a little confusing when we go back in the clock or roll the time machine back just simply a week and you and I are there for Oklahoma and Bingham 10.
- 19:47[SPEAKER_01]: And Audrey Lauery starts that game and Patty Gasso talked about the reasoning behind Audrey Lauery started that game as we've been through this so much we know
- 19:56[SPEAKER_01]: You don't mess around in game one of regional.
- 20:00[SPEAKER_01]: You pitch your best pitcher.
- 20:02[SPEAKER_01]: You put it in your pocket as she said, and you go from there.
- 20:05[SPEAKER_01]: And if things are going really well, what did you see?
- 20:07[SPEAKER_01]: You saw Berkeley's a K. We'll talk about here in a minute.
- 20:10[SPEAKER_01]: You saw a list of Parker, the two freshmen got the RNCA tournament experience.
- 20:14[SPEAKER_01]: Yaddy, yaddy, yaddy, yadda.
- 20:15[SPEAKER_01]: They're cruising on Sunday.
- 20:17[SPEAKER_01]: A week ago in regional play, you get here's to deal.
- 20:20[SPEAKER_01]: You get Sydney Burzon in, yada, yada, yada.
- 20:22[SPEAKER_01]: But what did Patty guys say there?
- 20:24[SPEAKER_01]: You don't mess with it.
- 20:25[SPEAKER_01]: You pitch your best pitcher and put it in your pocket.
- 20:28[SPEAKER_01]: That was Friday.
- 20:29[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know, again, how you get to a super regional.
- 20:34[SPEAKER_01]: Picture best picture, put it in your pocket, because I think it affected everything.
- 20:38[SPEAKER_01]: The defense was bad on Friday as well.
- 20:41[SPEAKER_01]: It was the most hits that Oklahoma had ever allowed in a super regional.
- 20:44[SPEAKER_01]: It tied the most errors that Oklahoma had allowed in a super region.
- 20:48[SPEAKER_01]: You had to go all the way back to the Washington super in the early 2000s to get an Oklahoma defense that had four errors.
- 20:56[SPEAKER_01]: And it was spots where Sidney Barker had just a little bit of a howler at third.
- 21:01[SPEAKER_01]: I want to ag buy on he was uncaring.
- 21:03[SPEAKER_00]: And how big was that play?
- 21:05[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I mean, you look at...
- 21:07[SPEAKER_01]: What's been steady atty?
- 21:10[SPEAKER_01]: It's another one of those things where the middle infield and at Gabby Garcia, don't want to buy out of our fantastic infielders.
- 21:16[SPEAKER_01]: There have been spots to early in the year where we wondered where they pressing or not.
- 21:20[SPEAKER_01]: There's just been a little bit of meltdown, because it's like this much for Oklahoma, but we've seen it at times this year and it's certainly happened on Friday and then Barker who
- 21:32[SPEAKER_01]: not killing anybody, but it's just one of those things that comes back through of patty gas to talk about, like, levied your defense, you're in the line it for that, and it was another pivotal moment, and it's kind of in back to back innings there that allowed Mississippi State to really start to roar back.
- 21:47[SPEAKER_01]: And that, that was a dugout that was dead the rights down 5-1 in the third inning, because especially it wasn't just that you're down 5-1.
- 21:54[SPEAKER_01]: it's that you as a team had just seen the weekend prior fair cloth dominate Oregon and Oklahoma comes out and says that looks like every other picture that Oklahoma faces is just a little deer in the headlights.
- 22:05[SPEAKER_01]: Pigeon comes in, smoked her too.
- 22:08[SPEAKER_01]: Mississippi states they can are pitching is cooked for the entire wheat like that was the energy in the dugout and Oklahoma's defense let Mississippi state back in the game.
- 22:17[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, they really did and, you know, if they just play the defense that they played, you know, for most of the last three months, especially, I don't think we're sitting there talking about their season being over because I think they win Friday and I think if they win Friday, Saturday is a very similar result to what we saw,
- 22:40[SPEAKER_00]: And then, you know, Sunday again never happens, but, you know, that's what happens when you have pitching that a struggle as much as there, there, there's have all year, and you open yourself up for just a little crack and a team could come rolling right through.
- 23:02[SPEAKER_00]: And that's what happened.
- 23:07[SPEAKER_00]: left Mississippi state with some more at bats and they were able to take advantage of them in a big way against an OU pitching staff that had been sort of jekyll and hide and they were on the bat side of it on Friday.
- 23:23[SPEAKER_01]: It sets up a really, really massive off-season for Oklahoma Ryan.
- 23:29[SPEAKER_01]: There's going to be a very, very fast, I think, internal just taking a kind of what they believe happened, what went wrong as far as things go.
- 23:37[SPEAKER_01]: When you look at the fact that, obviously, that the gin rocha health situation is something that no one can plan for.
- 23:44[SPEAKER_01]: And the most important thing on all of that,
- 23:46[SPEAKER_01]: is Jim Rochon, her family, and Jim's health, as Coach Rochon was able to rejoin the team and get back going.
- 23:54[SPEAKER_01]: How can you measure how disrupted that is for a really young pitching staff that had a pair of freshmen and a pair of sophomores?
- 24:02[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know how you can measure that.
- 24:04[SPEAKER_01]: So that's something there, Sydney Burzon, who is rated by some as the top pitcher, the portal.
- 24:10[SPEAKER_01]: That just didn't pan out where she comes in and is your dominant pitcher as far as that goes.
- 24:15[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know what you do with that.
- 24:17[SPEAKER_01]: But feels like a lot of things just align that in years past, it's all worked out.
- 24:22[SPEAKER_01]: And this year was the year that,
- 24:23[SPEAKER_01]: It just kind of didn't as far as that goes.
- 24:25[SPEAKER_01]: But now you look in the graduating class out in the bullpin.
- 24:30[SPEAKER_01]: That'll be Kirsten Deal and Sid Burzon.
- 24:33[SPEAKER_01]: Sid's gonna head to be part of the AUSO Reserve pool this summer.
- 24:36[SPEAKER_01]: Kirsten Deal'll be back as a GA in 2027, fall 226 minutes into the 2027 season.
- 24:42[SPEAKER_01]: Got Abby Dayton out and left field graduating head to the AUSO Reserve pool.
- 24:46[SPEAKER_01]: Emirling Sambo who had become Oklahoma's everyday first basement just about as far as that goes and then I Lanna and Bionne who graduates out she said to the Chicago bandits of the AUSL that that's your graduating class and then on Monday We've already seen three names hit the portal, but
- 25:04[SPEAKER_01]: If we were power-ranking, if you had to give Ryan and I the entire roster of Oklahoma players and rank them from most likely, I would not be shocked whatsoever if this player hit the portal to Holy cow, this would be a cataclysmic, like massive shock,
- 25:22[SPEAKER_01]: I really think that if you, uh, gay brand and I have blind pole, Tia below I would be the number one most likely player to hit the portal.
- 25:29[SPEAKER_01]: Followed shortly by Riley Zake, who publicly talked about finally in her Instagram caption that she had been re-rended, got a concussion in the off-season that concussion had lingering effects, decided to just step away.
- 25:42[SPEAKER_01]: Red shirt technically maintained full health.
- 25:44[SPEAKER_01]: She's portalling Berkeley's decay.
- 25:46[SPEAKER_01]: The freshman picture.
- 25:47[SPEAKER_01]: She's also portalling.
- 25:49[SPEAKER_01]: Think those two will be looking to play together.
- 25:51[SPEAKER_01]: This is what they didn't travel ball.
- 25:53[SPEAKER_01]: Like it is as if it is.
- 25:53[SPEAKER_01]: They played for a much different travel ball teams.
- 25:56[SPEAKER_01]: I'd say it might have to be the same situation, but this is no shot for this occasion.
- 26:00[SPEAKER_01]: We move it on to something now.
- 26:02[SPEAKER_01]: So those three are the three that have announced.
- 26:04[SPEAKER_01]: that they are hitting the portal.
- 26:06[SPEAKER_01]: So as far as that goes, that's three more roster spots that Oklahoma will have out in about on top of the 26 signies who five will be joining up and Ori Malo, who is my Alex, who is already with the program.
- 26:21[SPEAKER_01]: She enrolled early red shirt.
- 26:22[SPEAKER_01]: It's that's the sixth of the 26 signies.
- 26:24[SPEAKER_01]: But
- 26:25[SPEAKER_01]: It's a massive lot of season ahead, where I'm going to need to add some pitching out in the bull pit and they've got to make some decisions, is it middle and field that you're pursuing in the portal?
- 26:33[SPEAKER_01]: Do you need a backup catcher behind Kindle Wells?
- 26:36[SPEAKER_01]: Do you need, are you sliding Cassie Pickering at back out the left field?
- 26:40[SPEAKER_01]: Do you need an outfielder?
- 26:42[SPEAKER_01]: I know that Peyton Wester plays outfielder, then here's the other bit.
- 26:47[SPEAKER_01]: It's far as all of this goes.
- 26:49[SPEAKER_01]: I would like to liken the NCAA softball portal as very close to the NCAA basketball portal that seems as this thing has gone.
- 26:58[SPEAKER_01]: This is a situation where I don't think you can dot all the eyes and cross all the teas with your own players until they all are back locked in because we have seen some portal stunners over these last two off seasons that like Oklahoma could be everything else kind of to Oklahoma this year as far as parity stuff like that.
- 27:17[SPEAKER_01]: Oklahoma could be one of those groups that maybe has a stunning portal edition.
- 27:21[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know.
- 27:23[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, for sure, they've got you would imagine that they're already on top of this with exit interviews and things like that, trying to lock in some of those players who they really want back.
- 27:36[SPEAKER_00]: And I think everybody's sort of in play on this that you've got to talk to them, see where their head is, but also see what they need to make it work financially with the
- 27:51[SPEAKER_00]: uh, players probably as far as NIO.
- 27:54[SPEAKER_01]: They're not effective tech, right.
- 27:56[SPEAKER_01]: They're also not going to be Mike White where they paint themselves as a have not.
- 28:00[SPEAKER_01]: It's the, uh, they're on the, the good side of things, but I, I, I just call it what it is.
- 28:08[SPEAKER_01]: You have to make sure that the Magdor Club is not picked up the phone allegedly, and allegedly called Cassie Pickering Kindle Wells,
- 28:18[SPEAKER_01]: You know, it was reported a year ago that the Matterport Club had a list of players that played for the Hansen hot shots.
- 28:25[SPEAKER_01]: Cassidy Pickering was on that list a year ago, reportedly, softball on a side that ran that.
- 28:30[SPEAKER_01]: Cassidy Pickering did play for Hansen.
- 28:31[SPEAKER_01]: A lot of Hansen's former players had ended up in love like,
- 28:35[SPEAKER_01]: I get it.
- 28:35[SPEAKER_01]: I just not beat around the bush allegedly allegedly make sure the mad door club hasn't called because this is the name of the game of college softball, right?
- 28:42[SPEAKER_01]: There are going to be programs that try to reach out to Kindow Wells if she's not in the portal and say how many zeros and make her say, no, I'm going back to Oakland.
- 28:50[SPEAKER_01]: Like as locked in as you feel someone is, this is just the way that it operates right now in this wild wild west of college sports.
- 28:58[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, no doubt about it, and you know, it would have been sort of unconscionable before the season to think, hey, you know, we could be talking about Cassidy Pickering potentially leaving their kind of wells or anything like that, but when you missed the world series.
- 29:18[SPEAKER_00]: And you have teams that are willing to go sort of above and beyond.
- 29:23[SPEAKER_00]: And I don't want to say overpay because everybody I think who gets paid is deserving of that in the college softball realm.
- 29:31[SPEAKER_00]: But pay higher than what the going rate is.
- 29:35[SPEAKER_00]: You know, you've got to listen to that.
- 29:38[SPEAKER_00]: I think certainly some of these players are gonna do that.
- 29:44[SPEAKER_00]: figure out what's best for them in their future.
- 29:47[SPEAKER_00]: And I think when you won have a season like OU had in the ending, like OU had, it's easier to picture leaving.
- 30:00[SPEAKER_00]: But also just the,
- 30:04[SPEAKER_00]: You know, some of the players that they lost and things like that, I think this is a time of major transition, not quite as big of a transition as I think it was a couple of years ago when
- 30:15[SPEAKER_00]: You know, players like Jay to Coleman and T.R.
- 30:18[SPEAKER_00]: E. Jennings in Elissa Brito and in Kinsey Hanson leave, you know, not through the portal, but through graduation and moving on, but certainly a really big transition for them.
- 30:32[SPEAKER_00]: And I think priority one for them is retaining the players on their roster.
- 30:37[SPEAKER_00]: And then shortly after that is, let's go get a picture out of the portal.
- 30:45[SPEAKER_00]: You got to beef up that pitching staff and get it better.
- 30:47[SPEAKER_00]: And then you figure out what the other pieces are.
- 30:50[SPEAKER_00]: For instance, you know, if Sydney Barker stays, where does she fit in there, especially if Natalie Macken-Romorinas is back?
- 30:59[SPEAKER_00]: which we would anticipate her being back at some point next year, early in the season, where does Barker fit?
- 31:06[SPEAKER_00]: Does she fit in left field, for instance?
- 31:11[SPEAKER_00]: Do they use her at first base?
- 31:14[SPEAKER_00]: What do they do with her?
- 31:15[SPEAKER_00]: And,
- 31:17[SPEAKER_00]: how do those all those puzzle pieces fit around that and it'll be really interesting to see what they do, not only who they wind up acquiring during the portal and losing during the portal more than they have already, but also just the philosophy behind it is going to be fascinating because I think it's going to say a lot about
- 31:40[SPEAKER_00]: Uh, where this program is going, especially with, uh, you know, the Olympics on the horizon and Patigasso coaching that, uh, and, you know, you do wonder how long Patigasso's got left at OU before she hands the reins over to presumably, uh, JT and origin Rocha.
- 32:00[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it's a spot too, where as you enter the portal waters, the window officially opens on June 8th.
- 32:08[SPEAKER_01]: So technically, unless you're a graduate transfer, what people are announcing is I will be entering the portal and they'll submit all the paperwork when it opens, but it's something that I think Patty and her staff have done a really good job of balancing in years past, but we've seen elsewhere.
- 32:24[SPEAKER_01]: You look at the Mia Williams story at Florida and then Texas Tech that
- 32:29[SPEAKER_01]: If you look around and decide to get really, really aggressive in a transport portal, there's also the potential of like that knock on effect right of hey you would got really really aggressive with this I'm going to go this way just look back to football Oklahoma lands Cole Sullivan.
- 32:45[SPEAKER_01]: Sammy almost he goes in the portal headed out to you see a lot like it's something that again patting her staff have been really really good about so usually if you're really good about that that means that you're pretty transparent and exit interviews and things like that but that's also something it just.
- 33:01[SPEAKER_01]: Coaches these days have to spend 7,000 plates all at once, and that's just yet another one in that I think is like often underthought about in portal times, but it's something that Oklahoma have to deal with, like, you look at talking to Audrey Larrie and Miley with Chanio, and it's going to have to be a conversation of, hey, just FYI, if we sign two pictures, don't freak out, like that's something that's going to be part of the calculus.
- 33:31[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, no doubt about it.
- 33:32[SPEAKER_00]: And there's no indication at Patty Gesso and her staff will be anything other than fourth right, like you said, that's sort of been the indication, the way that things have played out over the last few years that they're very sort of blunt in their assessments, but also respecting those players and saying, hey,
- 33:52[SPEAKER_00]: you know, this is what your role is going to be here.
- 33:54[SPEAKER_00]: If you think you can go, you know, find a better role elsewhere and you probably can then maybe it's, it's best to move on.
- 34:02[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, heck, we saw heck, Hannah court is back in the world series with, with Nebraska there and heck, hit a home run was a Sunday that you hit a home running game game two of that, uh,
- 34:20[SPEAKER_00]: uh in in game two of that super regional against Oklahoma state and uh you know we've seen those players that are either in the periphery of uh being in the regular lineup I mean that's
- 34:35[SPEAKER_00]: Tia Maloy, sort of falls into that category, but we've seen other players that have decided, you know, Quincy Lillio a few years ago, decided to go elsewhere and find a solidified starting role and had a lot of success.
- 34:53[SPEAKER_00]: And then we've seen, you know, other players who were in the mix, like Core, who would have gotten a lot of playing time, but maybe wasn't at the top.
- 35:03[SPEAKER_00]: of the priority list of players decide to we've seen a couple of those players kind of players stay and then we've seen a couple of those kind of players depart and go elsewhere.
- 35:15[SPEAKER_00]: So I think this could be the offseason though where things get a little bit more surprising at least for
- 35:24[SPEAKER_00]: I'm not going to say the casual fan, but the fans who maybe aren't locked into what goes on with the portal and just the realities of day-to-day college athletics, this could be the one where you get a surprise or to whether it's entering the portal or coming to you on the other side.
- 35:45[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, this is also the trials and tribulations of when you sign never on classes after number on class, after number on classes, Oklahoma still puts a heavy priority on high school recruiting.
- 35:56[SPEAKER_01]: That just means that if someone comes in, doesn't have a freshman year like they wanted.
- 36:01[SPEAKER_01]: Suddenly they might look up as a sophomore and be used only as a pinch runner and then you have to kind of have that crossroads of, do I wanna fight back another talented freshman class or do I just wanna try maybe
- 36:13[SPEAKER_01]: change your scenery, new voices, that kind of thing, and I feel like that's like team of loyalty.
- 36:19[SPEAKER_01]: Tons and tons of talent didn't quite get going immediately as a freshman, and now it's just kind of like, to get the opportunity you need.
- 36:26[SPEAKER_01]: Maybe you just head elsewhere, and it'll be one of those things where I don't think there's any like hard feelings to anyone.
- 36:31[SPEAKER_01]: It's like stuck it out, tried to run it back, saw more of your stuff like that.
- 36:34[SPEAKER_01]: Those were the ones I think were very, very used to, but
- 36:37[SPEAKER_01]: Like we said, it is this thing gets underway and then full swing.
- 36:40[SPEAKER_01]: Oklahoma suitors on SI dot com will have every twist and turn that is coming here for the portal as far as that goes we're going to have here of the next couple of days on Tuesday morning we'll have twofold our off season preview areas of companies to attack just general roster numbers what are you looking for as far as
- 37:02[SPEAKER_01]: potential numbers of people in the, that you need to get out of the portal just to get to where you want all that stuff, Avers going to have a story kind of previewing, who are some of the candidates that might end up tossing their name in the hat into the portal, who might be some of the biggest losses or what would be the hardest players maybe to replace things like that, and then we'll also have our portal tracker that's going to really get underway here.
- 37:25[SPEAKER_01]: as we kind of get that thing done.
- 37:27[SPEAKER_01]: But Ryan, before we wrap up and all that stuff, anything else from the weekend, from the season, because it was a, you can't say it was boring.
- 37:37[SPEAKER_01]: That's for darn sure as far as everything goes, especially this past weekend with everything that happened on the field off the field, everything.
- 37:45[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, you know, the only the only other thing I really wanted to say is I posted the quote from Patty gas, so in the immediate aftermath of Kindle Wells getting hit in the face and to the fact that you know, she was, I don't think by the time Patty had put the headset on, Kindle Wells wasn't out there warming up with the catchers gear on, so it was just right after
- 38:14[SPEAKER_00]: and there were some fans on Twitter who are X, it's still Twitter to me, always will be who thought that Patty Gasseau was saying that she thought that Delaney Everett was throwing at Kindle Wells intentionally.
- 38:31[SPEAKER_00]: I don't think there was anything like that.
- 38:34[SPEAKER_00]: I think what Patty Gasseau was saying was that
- 38:37[SPEAKER_00]: Hey, we've got to lock in, not let this situation affect us, but it's impossible not to let it affect you when it's one of your best friends.
- 38:46[SPEAKER_00]: And by one of your best friends, she's talking about Kindle Wells and her relationship with the rest of her teammates, not her, not Samantha Ricketts and her relationship with Patty Gasseau.
- 38:58[SPEAKER_00]: And there were at least a couple of people who took it that way.
- 39:02[SPEAKER_00]: And
- 39:03[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know where your thoughts on it Ryan, we haven't talked about it, but in my mind, there was no doubt what Patty Gassau was saying there, and it also wasn't, hey, we give up on this game, because that wasn't it, but it was especially when that interview happened and with what OU was going through and everything, I think people took that a little bit out of context.
- 39:29[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I definitely thought, and we were all, we were just like you at home, right?
- 39:34[SPEAKER_01]: We, when that stuff like that happens, we have a TV in the press box.
- 39:38[SPEAKER_01]: We stop everything, turn it up, and there's like, Tidavus, just sat around the TV listed to everything that Patty says.
- 39:44[SPEAKER_01]: And I definitely took it as Patty Gassos saying,
- 39:49[SPEAKER_01]: we the team have to lock back in which is tough when we just saw first off anyone get hit would just scary but someone that's my best friend like I thought she was talking about like for Pickering and and Gabby Garcia and people hitting behind Kind of Wells knowing that's one of my best friends
- 40:05[SPEAKER_01]: No, scary situation with scary situation happening to one of my best friends.
- 40:09[SPEAKER_01]: I think you saw if we get all the way to post game on Sunday, one of the first things that Patty gas so did she didn't have like an opening statement.
- 40:17[SPEAKER_01]: You got the mic first.
- 40:18[SPEAKER_01]: You immediately were like, Patty enough for this crap.
- 40:20[SPEAKER_01]: I want to know about the hit.
- 40:22[SPEAKER_01]: No, you just asked the normal like, hey, what went wrong here today and Patty's like, before we do anything.
- 40:29[SPEAKER_01]: Stop down big congratulations to Mississippi State.
- 40:32[SPEAKER_01]: Big congratulations to Sam Ricketts.
- 40:34[SPEAKER_01]: She's had nothing but glowing things to say about Sam Ricketts.
- 40:38[SPEAKER_01]: Not just for the, what was it?
- 40:40[SPEAKER_01]: Eight prior meetings between the two, so Sam took the job ahead of Japanese to be state.
- 40:45[SPEAKER_01]: but going into the weekend on Friday, on Saturday and immediately on Sunday, she's talking about nothing but love for Sam Ricketts.
- 40:53[SPEAKER_01]: I'm going to be, she flat out said, the way this history state team plays, they're going to be dangerous of the world series.
- 40:59[SPEAKER_01]: I will be a fan of them rooting for them.
- 41:01[SPEAKER_01]: I assume the presumption is if they're not playing Arkansas.
- 41:04[SPEAKER_01]: uh... in four as far as that goes and so i don't think that pat it i don't think pat it would go out of her way and say all those things even if it was one of her favorite former players turn coaches on the other side if she had felt like there was anything like that lingering you flip it around Sam Rickett said that patty came to her and had a ton of great things to say she's like i'm not going to get into them there between us but
- 41:27[SPEAKER_01]: hurt, she was like, she's just the best and I don't think that if it had been an intentional situation, I think they eventually would have got past it coming together in the opposite and all that stuff, but I don't think that if that's how Patty Gassos feeling in real time, I don't think that's, it was out of their way to go out and kind of love on each other a little bit post game, which we have seen where no love last happens and Patty Gassos doesn't go out of
- 41:55[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, no doubt about it.
- 41:56[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, heck, you just see the even the pregame embrace between the two.
- 42:01[SPEAKER_00]: It was clear the respect and love and admiration that they have for each other.
- 42:06[SPEAKER_00]: And yeah, just wanted to bring that up because there had been a couple fans who had, you know, maybe taken exception to what Patty said on either side.
- 42:17[SPEAKER_00]: But.
- 42:19[SPEAKER_00]: You know, I think it was pretty clear what she meant there and, you know, that certainly wasn't the reason that they lost.
- 42:27[SPEAKER_00]: and everything, but it's also important that people know that, you know, one that pati gaso wasn't that, well, one that delaney ever wasn't throwing it kind of wells.
- 42:40[SPEAKER_00]: I don't think there's anybody who is in the stadium who believes that or should believe it at least given the count, the situation, all that stuff, but two that pati gaso would react that way.
- 42:50[SPEAKER_00]: and say something like that, because that is not what she meant at all, and I thought it was very clear what she was saying, but apparently not everybody did.
- 43:00[SPEAKER_01]: I also, like, put inside of that is have no problem with anyone that was like yell your booing, so like that's a need of battle.
- 43:04[SPEAKER_01]: I guess that's just what you do, you know what I mean?
- 43:06[SPEAKER_01]: Like that's how that's one form of a home feel getting behind and putting pressure like one of those things.
- 43:12[SPEAKER_00]: I thought I thought the way that the booing amped up whenever it is celebrating the strike out to it in the ending.
- 43:21[SPEAKER_00]: Uh, that was a little bit much to me, because what she's supposed to do, like, she's not gonna walk off the field somber when she just got out of this massive moment, the only real scoring threat that, oh, you had really on the day, uh, you know, really until the seventh inning, she's able to get through that, and
- 43:44[SPEAKER_00]: You know, she should be fired up about that.
- 43:47[SPEAKER_00]: And that doesn't mean that you're not concerned about kind of wells and all that stuff.
- 43:50[SPEAKER_00]: But I thought that the booing in the moment was fine, the later instance of it was a little bit much for me.
- 44:02[SPEAKER_01]: I was in my book, I was like, that was heat of battle.
- 44:06[SPEAKER_01]: That's just, you know, fun atmosphere is being fun.
- 44:15[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, Florida, yeah, I was about to say, just look at Nigel Kennedy's reaction to the the basis of the agenda that she got out of.
- 44:24[SPEAKER_01]: Well, I'm just, I'm not usually a very squirmy, poor, clutchy person when it comes to these sort of things.
- 44:31[SPEAKER_01]: The, uh, happenings and hijinks and gainsville, I was like, I think we might be like, there is a line that we crossed in like the second inning and we just kept driving straight out
- 44:43[SPEAKER_00]: I just wondered if white chocolate was going to like, you know, murder somebody over there is there, you know, continually throwing it, uh, meowuliums.
- 44:53[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that, uh, you had just some, we didn't have any, uh, family members tossed to my knowledge for whatever that was in Lincoln as well.
- 45:04[SPEAKER_01]: So I was like, you can look around and go.
- 45:07[SPEAKER_01]: There were a lot of great atmospheres and then there were and then not a atmosphere issue down in Austin, but imagine my surprise when I get home on Sunday and see the hot mic moment that was working it's where right out of the Austin.
- 45:20[SPEAKER_01]: I really wonder what like
- 45:23[SPEAKER_01]: If Mike White got into like what are they talking about what it wasn't any of us right like He's like, I'm not issuing another biology gosh, I was on my business.
- 45:32[SPEAKER_01]: So we saw supers get off the rails I thought that oh you must be state state firmly in the heat of battle fuel competition all that stuff
- 45:42[SPEAKER_01]: We're going to leave it here.
- 45:44[SPEAKER_01]: We'll get back to close and down and enjoy the closing moments of our holidays.
- 45:49[SPEAKER_01]: We'll be back on Wednesday, Thursday, on the side pod, recap and everything.

- 46:04[SPEAKER_01]: further on into offseason stuff and another 48 hours on as you all know as the portal turns lives could be changed everything could look so different or like nothing could happen between now and Wednesday that's just portal life whatever it'll probably with our track record it'll probably happen during our podcast on Wednesday yes we're Brady Trenton will have to you know
