- 0:00Speaker 1: Welcome to the Yukon Football Coaches Show. We're back with
- 0:03Speaker 1: Jim Mora after a week off, a bye week, and
- 0:07Speaker 1: obviously coach, it wasn't a week off. But how do
- 0:10Speaker 1: you handle the amount of time you have between games
- 0:14Speaker 1: and decide, you know, how much time we're going to
- 0:16Speaker 1: give the guys off, how much time you're going to
- 0:18Speaker 1: do extra study. What's your theory on that whole thing.
- 0:22Speaker 2: I think it always depends on when the by falls,
- 0:25Speaker 2: which for us was directly in the middle of our season,
- 0:27Speaker 2: which I think is a good thing. And so for us,
- 0:29Speaker 2: it was just getting a really good combination of rest
- 0:32Speaker 2: and recovery for the player players as well as you know,
- 0:35Speaker 2: some lifts in and then three practices and we kept
- 0:38Speaker 2: our practices to about an hour and fifteen minutes, went
- 0:41Speaker 2: without paths, just wore helmets and shells and got a
- 0:44Speaker 2: lot of really good work work in fast, great energy.
- 0:50Speaker 2: But we wanted our players to be able to, you know,
- 0:52Speaker 2: spend time recovering, relaxing. We want to give them a
- 0:56Speaker 2: chance to see family. We wanted to make sure that
- 0:58Speaker 2: they could catch up in any study that they needed
- 1:00Speaker 2: to do and still get working. I thought that they
- 1:03Speaker 2: handled it well, and I really liked the schedule that
- 1:05Speaker 2: we had in place.
- 1:07Speaker 1: Yeah, we're going to talk to Matt Hoffman and Wes
- 1:10Speaker 1: Hole a little bit later on on the show, and
- 1:11Speaker 1: they actually agrieve with what you're saying. It was nice
- 1:14Speaker 1: to have a little bit of time to yourself, but
- 1:16Speaker 1: then you know, get back at it and start to
- 1:19Speaker 1: have extra time to study, which is another thing, and
- 1:23Speaker 1: by week that I don't know, maybe the average fan
- 1:25Speaker 1: doesn't think about you have extra time to look at
- 1:27Speaker 1: your opponent. How do you handle that? Do you overanalyze
- 1:31Speaker 1: or do you find different things to look at when
- 1:34Speaker 1: you have an extra day or two to look at
- 1:36Speaker 1: your opponent coming up?
- 1:37Speaker 2: I thought you were talking about studies in class, but
- 1:39Speaker 2: we're talking about football like that.
- 1:41Speaker 1: Yeah, there's that too.
- 1:43Speaker 2: Well. As a staff, it gave us a jump on
- 1:45Speaker 2: things in terms of preparation for Boston College. I actually
- 1:49Speaker 2: asked the players not to look at any any BC
- 1:51Speaker 2: stuff until at least Thursday, because I just felt like
- 1:54Speaker 2: they needed to get away from it for a minute.
- 1:55Speaker 2: And I don't want it to get stale, you know,
- 1:58Speaker 2: as you said, you know if you overdo it and
- 2:00Speaker 2: then you overthink things, and as coaches, you know, sometimes
- 2:03Speaker 2: you have a tendency to you know, where they say
- 2:05Speaker 2: work expands the time allotted. So we just really tried
- 2:08Speaker 2: to do a good job of staying with our typical
- 2:12Speaker 2: plan for game planning, you know, and the amount of
- 2:15Speaker 2: plays we put in and what we focus on. But
- 2:18Speaker 2: I try to keep the players just away from ball
- 2:21Speaker 2: really until Thursday and let them focus on school and recovery. Yeah.
- 2:26Speaker 1: I like that logic definitely. One thing that Lee Malette
- 2:29Speaker 1: mentioned to us about getting a chance to watch BC
- 2:33Speaker 1: play Clemson live. He liked that because he saw some things,
- 2:37Speaker 1: you know, in action as the game was happening, and
- 2:39Speaker 1: then obviously you're going to study what they're doing before
- 2:42Speaker 1: you get ready to play them. That was something I
- 2:44Speaker 1: didn't think about, right. How many times have football players
- 2:48Speaker 1: get a chance to really watch games live. Yeah, I
- 2:51Speaker 1: know we're playing on Thursdays and Fridays and all that
- 2:53Speaker 1: other stuff, but getting to see your opponent live can
- 2:56Speaker 1: help you, I would think.
- 2:57Speaker 2: I agree. I think there's so much to be learned
- 2:59Speaker 2: just by not only watching the game but listening to
- 3:02Speaker 2: the announcers. Because you know, when you do these production
- 3:05Speaker 2: meetings and you and I do them there's some insight
- 3:07Speaker 2: that you might glean as a as an announcer that
- 3:11Speaker 2: you know, you reveal during a broadcast. You know who
- 3:14Speaker 2: they're focusing on, who they're trying to get more involved.
- 3:16Speaker 2: You know some of the thought processes that a coach
- 3:19Speaker 2: has and maybe's not going to share with with the
- 3:22Speaker 2: with the radio or print media during the week. You know,
- 3:25Speaker 2: stuff that he only wants revealed during the game, and
- 3:28Speaker 2: so being able to listen to that or analyze how
- 3:31Speaker 2: they handle a two minute situation you in real time,
- 3:34Speaker 2: not not on film where they're cutting out you know,
- 3:37Speaker 2: the stuff that goes on between the plays, but actually
- 3:40Speaker 2: the real time or how they work through tempo, how
- 3:43Speaker 2: they substitute, who's calling the plays, you know, their demeanor
- 3:47Speaker 2: between plays. Seeing things that you don't necessarily see on film,
- 3:51Speaker 2: you get a chance to see, and so I think
- 3:54Speaker 2: that it further prepares you to be ready on game
- 3:56Speaker 2: day when you've had the experience of watching them on
- 3:58Speaker 2: TV live.
- 4:00Speaker 1: Jim Moore with US the ucon Football Coaches Show. I
- 4:03Speaker 1: know you don't look back too much, just keep things
- 4:05Speaker 1: right in front of you, but we do have to
- 4:07Speaker 1: do a little bit of a review on what happened
- 4:10Speaker 1: against BIU the other day. Fifty one points on the board,
- 4:14Speaker 1: you allowed ten. Would you say that was the most
- 4:18Speaker 1: complete game you conplayed in football this year so far?
- 4:22Speaker 2: Oh, I think undoubtedly. I think, you know, the success
- 4:24Speaker 2: that we had offensively, defensively, and the things we did
- 4:27Speaker 2: on special teams, it was the most complete game we've played.
- 4:31Speaker 2: And yet I will tell you this that I don't
- 4:33Speaker 2: think any of us are satisfied because we still don't
- 4:35Speaker 2: think it was a complete game. You know, it was
- 4:37Speaker 2: the most complete game we've had yet, but it's not
- 4:40Speaker 2: to our standards or the standards that were working towards.
- 4:42Speaker 2: So there's a lot of work left to do there.
- 4:45Speaker 2: But obviously, anytime you can take a step in the
- 4:48Speaker 2: right direction, you want to build on that. You want
- 4:50Speaker 2: to recognize it, you don't want to understand why it happened,
- 4:53Speaker 2: and you want to build on it. And so now
- 4:55Speaker 2: we're in the process of trying to build on it.
- 4:57Speaker 1: And that came on the heels of winning at Buffalo
- 5:00Speaker 1: the road and a final second of field goal by
- 5:03Speaker 1: Chris Freeman. Do you think that in a way there's
- 5:07Speaker 1: a mental momentum that a team can develop off of
- 5:10Speaker 1: win like that. I felt like the guys during the
- 5:12Speaker 1: week getting ready for FIU had a real sense of
- 5:16Speaker 1: forward momentum as they got ready for the home game
- 5:19Speaker 1: against the Panthers.
- 5:21Speaker 2: Yeah, it is really I totally agree with you, Mike.
- 5:24Speaker 2: So coming off the field after that Buffalo game, I'm
- 5:27Speaker 2: sure there was a lot of people that watched it
- 5:29Speaker 2: that are Yukon fans that were disappointed and thought that
- 5:32Speaker 2: we'd play better. We didn't play very well, but we
- 5:36Speaker 2: found a way to get a win. And sometimes when
- 5:38Speaker 2: you don't play well and you find a way to
- 5:39Speaker 2: get a win, especially on the road against a good opponent,
- 5:43Speaker 2: something grows out of that, you know, A confidence of
- 5:45Speaker 2: self belief, a trust. I don't know. I guess it's
- 5:50Speaker 2: just you know, the experience of being around it. I
- 5:52Speaker 2: felt that kind of growing on our team, and then
- 5:55Speaker 2: we were able to go out last week and play well. Now,
- 5:57Speaker 2: you know, you got to continue to protect that stuff.
- 5:59Speaker 2: You got to keep working at that level and concentrating
- 6:02Speaker 2: at that level that you know helped you find that success,
- 6:05Speaker 2: and that's what our guys are committed to doing.
- 6:07Speaker 1: Yeah, before we go to the break, just a little
- 6:09Speaker 1: thought on doubt versus confidence when you when you're on
- 6:13Speaker 1: the road and you lost those tough ones in Syracuse
- 6:16Speaker 1: and Delaware, you know, maybe a little doubt comes into
- 6:19Speaker 1: your mind as a player, I don't know, But then
- 6:21Speaker 1: you win one close on the road. I think that
- 6:24Speaker 1: kind of like moves you past all that stuff. Finally.
- 6:28Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't know if doubt comes into our mind.
- 6:30Speaker 2: What I had felt a little bit was hesitation at times,
- 6:34Speaker 2: And I don't know if that's the same as doubt
- 6:36Speaker 2: or not. But like to just kind of cut it
- 6:38Speaker 2: loose and trust the work we've done, because the confidence
- 6:42Speaker 2: comes in the work that you do. You know, it's
- 6:44Speaker 2: a preparation, it's a habits, it's the mindset. But you
- 6:49Speaker 2: do the work, you earn the confidence, you know. And
- 6:53Speaker 2: I feel like we just were just a little apprehensive
- 6:56Speaker 2: about just cutting it loose, and we got over that,
- 6:59Speaker 2: and now we got to stay over that. So I
- 7:02Speaker 2: don't know that, you know, you always, I guess people
- 7:05Speaker 2: always ask you, is there a turning point in your season?
- 7:07Speaker 2: And I don't think you'd really think about that till
- 7:10Speaker 2: the end of the season. But as we look back,
- 7:11Speaker 2: if we see where we go, that could be one
- 7:14Speaker 2: of them.
- 7:14Speaker 1: We'll see, Yeah, all right, Jim Morrow, whether us the
- 7:16Speaker 1: Yukon Football Coaches Show continues. We're going to talk about
- 7:20Speaker 1: the offensive line work Wes Hole in the middle of that.
- 7:23Speaker 1: We'll interview him as well, and Matt Hoffman on the
- 7:25Speaker 1: defensive line what they're doing to get in the backfield
- 7:27Speaker 1: and harass opposing quarterbacks. And we'll get a little thumbnail
- 7:32Speaker 1: sketch of what Boston College is about when we return
- 7:35Speaker 1: on The Yukon Football Coaches Show.
