Transcript
- 0:20Speaker 1: Hey everyone, Emily body here. You are listening to five
- 0:24Speaker 1: Minute Friday from Hurdle. Wow. What a week since the
- 0:30Speaker 1: last time I talked to you. I feel like I've
- 0:32Speaker 1: been all over the place. I spent last Thursday in Connecticut.
- 0:38Speaker 1: I went to Washington, d C. On Friday. I ran
- 0:43Speaker 1: the Cherry Blossomed and Miler on Sunday. And when I
- 0:47Speaker 1: tell you that Sunday was an elite day, that is
- 0:52Speaker 1: the biggest understatement in that I ran a race that
- 0:56Speaker 1: I've been looking forward to for some time. I accomplished
- 0:59Speaker 1: my goal, which was to do this thing in sub
- 1:03Speaker 1: average pace of seven minutes thirty seconds. And then the
- 1:09Speaker 1: Yukon women won the March Madness tournament. So truly, like
- 1:15Speaker 1: I said, an elite day. I need to tell you
- 1:20Speaker 1: a story about the race last weekend. Right before the start,
- 1:24Speaker 1: I went to use a porta potty and I did so,
- 1:29Speaker 1: and as I was getting ready to begin the race,
- 1:34Speaker 1: I'm in the corral and I realized that I must
- 1:38Speaker 1: have dropped my license, which I always tuck into my
- 1:42Speaker 1: shorts pocket when I'm going out for a race and
- 1:44Speaker 1: I'm traveling alone. I tucked it in my shorts pocket.
- 1:48Speaker 1: I go to check it before the race begins, and
- 1:51Speaker 1: it is not in there. I dropped it. And it
- 1:54Speaker 1: is the ultimate lesson in that moment of letting go
- 1:57Speaker 1: of the things that you cannot control so much anxiety.
- 2:00Speaker 1: In this moment, I am like, what happens if tomorrow
- 2:04Speaker 1: they need my ID when I'm going to get on
- 2:06Speaker 1: an airplane and I am stuck in DC and I
- 2:11Speaker 1: start spiraling, And then I do two things. The first
- 2:15Speaker 1: thing I say to myself is what's the worst that's
- 2:18Speaker 1: gonna happen? Okay, if the worst that's gonna happen, truly,
- 2:21Speaker 1: the worst thing that could happen is that I'm not
- 2:23Speaker 1: allowed to get on a flight, which I believe that
- 2:25Speaker 1: there are many systems in place where they can verify
- 2:29Speaker 1: who you are. If you don't happen to have your
- 2:30Speaker 1: license on you, you just need to make sure you
- 2:33Speaker 1: have time at the airport. But I digress. If the
- 2:35Speaker 1: worst thing that's going to happen is that I have
- 2:37Speaker 1: to ultimately rent a car and drive home, it's actually
- 2:42Speaker 1: not that bad. That's the first thing that happens in
- 2:45Speaker 1: that moment. I tell that to myself. And then the
- 2:47Speaker 1: next thing that I tell to myself is Emily, You've
- 2:51Speaker 1: got to let it go because this is something right
- 2:53Speaker 1: now that is so much bigger than you, that is
- 2:56Speaker 1: so much beyond your control. There's absolutely you're not gonna
- 2:59Speaker 1: go look for the license right now. I wasn't gonna
- 3:02Speaker 1: do it. I was gonna run the race, and so
- 3:05Speaker 1: I literally said that to myself. And I don't know
- 3:07Speaker 1: if I've ever abandoned a concerning thought so fast, but
- 3:12Speaker 1: I knew that I could not give my energy to that.
- 3:16Speaker 1: It's silly a little bit to say I didn't come
- 3:19Speaker 1: that far to only come that far, but I didn't
- 3:21Speaker 1: put in all the opportunity costs in the weeks and
- 3:24Speaker 1: the months leading up to this moment that I had
- 3:27Speaker 1: woken up so early and trained for and put in
- 3:31Speaker 1: thirty plus mile weeks to get to this point, and
- 3:34Speaker 1: let my anxiety about something that I could do absolutely
- 3:38Speaker 1: nothing about wreck me. And so I let it go,
- 3:42Speaker 1: and I executed my race plan. And at mile nine,
- 3:48Speaker 1: I'm wearing my Apple AirPods and there's a setting on
- 3:52Speaker 1: the iPhone where it can announce your notifications, and so
- 3:56Speaker 1: I get an announcement in my headphones. I'm at my
- 4:00Speaker 1: I'm making my way toward that finish line, and it
- 4:03Speaker 1: says message from dad, good morning, racer. It sounds like
- 4:09Speaker 1: they have your idea. The volunteer tent, someone just called me,
- 4:14Speaker 1: I let out. Let me tell you a literal let go,
- 4:19Speaker 1: like audible excitement. I was so amped, I was so
- 4:25Speaker 1: close to finishing and I did it all. I did
- 4:29Speaker 1: it all. Wow, what a reminder just to let it
- 4:33Speaker 1: go again. I thought to myself, what's the worst that
- 4:35Speaker 1: can happen? I let go of something that I couldn't
- 4:38Speaker 1: do anything about, and I did the best I could
- 4:40Speaker 1: in that situation. The cherry on top was truly getting
- 4:43Speaker 1: my license back. It was. Indeed. At the volunteer tent,
- 4:46Speaker 1: the volunteer told me about the story about how she
- 4:49Speaker 1: looked up my name and then found my emergency contact
- 4:51Speaker 1: and then called my dad. I always switched back and
- 4:54Speaker 1: forth between my dad and my mom based on the event,
- 4:58Speaker 1: and I'm like, oh this, i'm'll goo with my mom
- 5:00Speaker 1: this time, I'll go with my dad. This is the
- 5:02Speaker 1: benefit of being in your mid thirties and single. Yeah,
- 5:06Speaker 1: it was great, and really it's applicable to what feels
- 5:10Speaker 1: like everything right now. I got a DM the other
- 5:12Speaker 1: day asking me about how I feel about the stock
- 5:15Speaker 1: market and all the money and the tariffs and everything
- 5:18Speaker 1: which to each their own, and I have the same response.
- 5:22Speaker 1: I'm going to focus on the things that I can
- 5:23Speaker 1: control right now, and so exerting all of this energy
- 5:28Speaker 1: over the things that are beyond me, it's just not
- 5:31Speaker 1: a good use of my emotions, of my feelings, and yeah,
- 5:36Speaker 1: my energy as a whole. Do the best you can
- 5:39Speaker 1: with what you have, you know, and that's what I'm
- 5:41Speaker 1: choosing to do. Over here. My question for you this week,
- 5:47Speaker 1: what is something that you are currently stressing about that
- 5:50Speaker 1: you have no control over and can you do me
- 5:54Speaker 1: a favor? Take a deep breath and let it go.
- 5:59Speaker 1: And now a listener question. Hi, Emily, I'm in a
- 6:04Speaker 1: longtime listener and you really inspired me to start running outside.
- 6:08Speaker 1: I joined a run club last December and I'm running
- 6:11Speaker 1: my first race, a ten k next Saturday, April twelfth.
- 6:15Speaker 1: It's tomorrow. I've done the work, but the jitters are
- 6:18Speaker 1: getting in the way. Any last minute words of wisdom.
- 6:24Speaker 1: Highly appreciate the work that you're doing best, Nusha. This
- 6:29Speaker 1: is a good one. The thing that I read here
- 6:33Speaker 1: and that I want to point out that you said
- 6:34Speaker 1: so beautifully. I've done the work, and when I'm feeling
- 6:39Speaker 1: really anxious about something, and I've talked about this strategy
- 6:41Speaker 1: on the show before, I sit down with a pen
- 6:45Speaker 1: and a paper and I write out my I AM statements,
- 6:49Speaker 1: And so I encourage you, a Nusha, and anyone who
- 6:52Speaker 1: may be approaching something that stirs up the butterflies, that
- 6:56Speaker 1: makes you feel a little anxious, that makes you feel
- 6:58Speaker 1: a little you know exactly what I'm talking about. You
- 7:03Speaker 1: sit down with your I AM statements and you write
- 7:06Speaker 1: down the things that you know to be true. For you, Nusha,
- 7:10Speaker 1: this is I am prepared, I am capable, I am
- 7:13Speaker 1: a runner. You are You've prepared for this moment, right,
- 7:18Speaker 1: I am strong, I am capable. I love this one
- 7:23Speaker 1: from Elish Cranny when we sat down all that long ago,
- 7:26Speaker 1: I am gritty. Remind yourself of what you know to
- 7:30Speaker 1: be true. I also think it's so important right now
- 7:34Speaker 1: to recognize that this is just the beginning for you.
- 7:38Speaker 1: In that you say I joined a run club last December,
- 7:42Speaker 1: You're running your first race. These are moments that are
- 7:46Speaker 1: something to be proud of, so awesome that you're putting
- 7:49Speaker 1: yourself out there so fantastic that you are trying this
- 7:54Speaker 1: new thing, and so recognize that and validate that, and
- 7:58Speaker 1: be proud of that, and know that this is just
- 8:02Speaker 1: the beginning and you can't judge your beginnings too harshly.
- 8:09Speaker 1: I know we're all our biggest critics. I hear you,
- 8:11Speaker 1: I hear you. But come back to how proud you
- 8:15Speaker 1: are of yourself, because again, this is something to be
- 8:20Speaker 1: proud of. I am statements. Be proud of the journey,
- 8:24Speaker 1: be proud of yourself, and don't forget at the end
- 8:28Speaker 1: to celebrate your accomplishments. Make sure you are following along
- 8:32Speaker 1: with hurdle over on social It's at a Hurdle podcast.
