- 0:08Speaker 1: Hey, what's up, everybody.
- 0:09Speaker 2: This is Andrew Dichecko with another edition of Di Checko Daily.
- 0:13Hope everyone's having a great weekend. Hope you got a
- 0:16chance to check out Early Birds from nine to twelve
- 0:19this morning on ninety seventy five The Fanatic That was Saturday.
- 0:22Speaker 1: If you're listening to it today.
- 0:24Speaker 2: Those of you who have followed my work, you already
- 0:27know that I'm not big on lists, especially in the offseason.
- 0:31Speaker 1: I like to sort of.
- 0:32Speaker 2: Create my own ideas and have some so you know,
- 0:36some logic behind it. But there is logic behind this
- 0:39because I want to count down my top five most
- 0:43important Eagles entering the twenty twenty five season. And this
- 0:49accent's a much larger point that I'm going to address
- 0:52when we get to the end of this conversation. But
- 0:55at number five for me, that's linebacker Zach Bonn. Now,
- 0:59when you look what he did last season, first team
- 1:01All Pro, made the Pro Bowl. This is a player
- 1:05who is head and shoulders the Eagles best linebacker. He's
- 1:10also quickly become one of the best players at his
- 1:13position in the sport. And I think that I put
- 1:16him at number five obviously because of the impact that
- 1:19he has on the field, that's evident.
- 1:21Speaker 1: He has really taken to Vic Fangio's system.
- 1:23Speaker 2: And I still think because he's so new to the
- 1:26off ball linebacker position at the pro level and playing
- 1:29a much more expanded role compared to what he did
- 1:32with the Saints, that he still has room to grow.
- 1:34But when you look at the linebacker pecking order and
- 1:37where he stands, and then behind him there's a rookie
- 1:40and Jahad Campbell, who I have very high expectations for.
- 1:43Speaker 1: I think everybody has high.
- 1:45Speaker 2: Expectations for based on what you saw him do at Alabama. Well,
- 1:48he's injured right now, and so is the Kobe Dean
- 1:51who's going to be on the shelf for an extended
- 1:53period of time. From the sounds of it, we have
- 1:55yet to really hear a concrete timetable and never put
- 1:59anything past Kobe Dean, who attacks the rehab process. But
- 2:04Zach Bond is so important to the Eagles because of
- 2:09his standing in the linebacker groom and he really is
- 2:12the glue that holds that unit together. And when you
- 2:15look at losing some of the pieces that they did
- 2:18last season and there's a lot of new faces, he
- 2:20is going to be one of the prominent voices on
- 2:23that unit and a big key to sort of fueling
- 2:27this defense that they don't lose a step now. Number
- 2:31four for me was very tough because I looked at
- 2:34running back Saquon Barkley. Hard to dispute how critical he
- 2:39is to the offense's functionality. Last season it ran through him.
- 2:43But I go back to this often listening to what
- 2:48key players on this Eagles team had to say in
- 2:50the spring, whether it was Jalen Hurts, whether it was
- 2:52AJ Brown, they all spoke about the need for the
- 2:55offense to evolve. So when you take that, if you're
- 2:59taking that, if face value evolve, certainly, probably it doesn't
- 3:03pertain to the running game, right, I mean, I think
- 3:05that's pretty well at hand. They have the league's best
- 3:07offensive line and the league's best running back sort of
- 3:12heading that era, that ground attack. So I look at
- 3:17AJ Brown and he's my number four because obviously the
- 3:21passing game runs through him. I also view AJ Brown
- 3:25as the best wide receiver in the NFL.
- 3:27Speaker 1: There isn't anything that he can't do.
- 3:29Speaker 2: Obviously, he has the prototypical size, he's strong, he's lethal
- 3:35after the catch. Just look at those slamt patterns that
- 3:38they throw to him. He has the ability to take
- 3:39those to the house. He's also willing to block in
- 3:42the running game, and I really do think that he
- 3:44is primed for a very big season for the Eagles,
- 3:48but not only his production. What he represents from an
- 3:52offensive standpoint, Teams have to account for him, which forces
- 3:56defenses to sort of play their other weapons differently, and
- 4:01it opens things up for his teammates to be successful.
- 4:05For this offense to really take this next step forward,
- 4:08the passing game needs to also head in that direction.
- 4:12I believe that it will under new OC Kevin Patulo.
- 4:15We have yet to see what it's actually going to
- 4:17look like. But I think that AJ Brown, what he represents,
- 4:20how critical he is to the passing game.
- 4:23Speaker 1: That's why he's number four.
- 4:25Speaker 2: He's going to elevate Jywen Hurts, and Jaywen Hurts is
- 4:28going to elevate AJ Brown. Now number three for me
- 4:33was something that was a point of contention, but there's
- 4:36logic behind it. Jaywen Hurts is my number three player
- 4:40going into this season. And I know that a lot
- 4:42of folks that are listening may say, how can the
- 4:44quarterback be anything?
- 4:45Speaker 1: Other than the top spot.
- 4:47Speaker 2: Well, it's sort of a multi layered thing here because
- 4:51obviously Jaywen Hurts is among the elite at his position,
- 4:54and he fuels this Eagles offense.
- 4:57Speaker 1: Everything runs through him.
- 4:58Speaker 2: Ultimately, he's taken more ownership of the offense, and I
- 5:02think that he's also going to get off to a
- 5:04much faster start having Kevin Patula, who he's worked with
- 5:07since twenty twenty one, and that relationship I think is
- 5:10really going to manifest into some early fireworks to the offense.
- 5:15But I also have to look at the player behind him,
- 5:18and I think Tanner McKee, and this sort of factors
- 5:21into my decision. I think very highly of Tanner McKee.
- 5:23I think he's a high end number two. You can
- 5:25argue that he's already one of the better number two
- 5:28quarterbacks in the NFL. And when he was pressed into
- 5:30service last year, in a game and a half, he
- 5:32completed thirty or forty five pass attempts for three hundred
- 5:35and twenty three yards and four touchdowns. Now, that was
- 5:38a very small sample size, but I think it speaks
- 5:41to the point of the offense.
- 5:43Speaker 1: Should Jalen Hurts.
- 5:44Speaker 2: You know, have him forbid if you're an Eagles fan,
- 5:47have to miss any time. I think he can capably
- 5:50navigate the offense, and it seems like everything would be
- 5:54open to him. I don't think there would be a
- 5:56restriction in terms of what he's able to handle. I
- 5:59think he should be able to capably navigated in the
- 6:01short term should anything unforeseen. Kind of you rise to
- 6:07the occasion. But that's not to say that Jay when
- 6:10Hurts isn't critical. When you touch the ball every play
- 6:14and you're that plus one in the running game and
- 6:16you're a reigning Super Bowl MVP, obviously you're super critical
- 6:21to this team's success. But there's a player that I
- 6:24have in the top spot that I would argue for
- 6:26being the most important player on the Eagles, and then
- 6:29number two for.
- 6:29Speaker 1: Me is going to be defensive tackle Jaywen Carter.
- 6:32Speaker 2: And the reason being is that obviously he's quickly becoming
- 6:35one of the best players, if not the best player
- 6:38at his position in the NFL. Obviously Chris Jones exists,
- 6:41and so does Dexter Lawrence. But I think by the
- 6:43end of the season, jaywhen Carter is going to be
- 6:45looked at as the top player at his position. He
- 6:48played eighty four percent of the defensive snaps last season
- 6:51eighty eight percent in the postseason. Teams have to double
- 6:55and maybe even sometimes triple team them because he is
- 6:58such a force at the line of smage, incredibly powerful,
- 7:02violent with his hands, and he can really get upfield
- 7:05and wreek havoc for quarterbacks, Ask any quarterback in the
- 7:08NFL what is the most detrimental to a play? And
- 7:11it's pressure up the middle, I should say in terms
- 7:14of pressure, and that's pressure up the middle because you
- 7:16force them off their spot and you sort of muddy
- 7:19the waters where they're not able to get a clear
- 7:21read on their pass targets.
- 7:24Speaker 1: And Jalen Carter for me, four and a half sacks last.
- 7:27Speaker 2: Season doesn't ut I doesn't necessarily illustrate how impactful that
- 7:32he was. But he's also super critical because one, he's
- 7:36the most important player on the defense, but behind him,
- 7:40there's a lot of questions for different reasons. Jordan Davis
- 7:43played thirty seven percent of the snaps last season. He's
- 7:46going to be expected to undertake a much more pivotal
- 7:49role on defense, so will Moro Jomo, a third year
- 7:52defensive tackle who played the identical amount of snaps as
- 7:55Jordan Davis last season. Now, I have high expectations for
- 7:59Moro Jomo and Jordan Davis, and it seems like the
- 8:02Eagles are banking on both. If you look at how
- 8:05they address the defensive tackle position in the offseason, they're
- 8:07expecting both to take a leap forward. But until we
- 8:11see that, that's obviously going to be a question. But
- 8:13that really underscores the importance of Jaylen Carter and what
- 8:17he's going to ultimately mean for this defense if they
- 8:19are to kind of pick up where they left off. Now,
- 8:22the final spot here, number one is Lane Johnson. And
- 8:27I had to give us a lot of thought because
- 8:29I was considering Jalen Hurts for this spot, but ultimately
- 8:33it has to be Lane Johnson. And I know that
- 8:35it might be a little head scratch and have a
- 8:37right tackle as the most important player for the Eagles
- 8:40immediate success.
- 8:41Speaker 1: But this hasn't really changed for me.
- 8:43Speaker 2: I've maintained that Lane Johnson is the most important player
- 8:47on the Eagles. Just look at the record without him
- 8:49in the lineup fifteen and twenty three. When he's not
- 8:52in the lineup, you see that no matter how high
- 8:56power this offense is, it does take a step back
- 8:59because of what he's able to do and impose his
- 9:02will and pretty much erase the pass rusher on the
- 9:05other side. But not only that, what he's able to
- 9:07do to stabilize the sort of revolving door right guard
- 9:11that he's playing next to. He is able to kind
- 9:14of I don't want to say mask because that takes
- 9:16away from what Makai Becton and Isaac Saamalu and what
- 9:19I believe Tyler Steen can really do. But Lane Johnson
- 9:23is such a steadying force. He's a future Hall of
- 9:26Famer and I believe one of the best tackles to
- 9:29play this game. And I keep going back to look
- 9:32at that Tampa Bay game when you didn't have aj
- 9:34Brown and you didn't have Lane Johnson. You had a
- 9:37lot of pieces on the offense that could make things go,
- 9:41but it made a world of a difference. And when
- 9:43you are there and you're protecting the quarterback and you
- 9:47have that kind of an impact on a game, I mean,
- 9:50it's kind of hard for me to go anywhere else.
- 9:53He's obviously especially instrumental to the to the overall flow
- 9:57of this offense. And for me, when I I looked
- 10:00at it, and I really did give this a lot
- 10:01of thought.
- 10:02Speaker 1: It has to be Lane Johnson.
- 10:04Speaker 2: But this exercise, to me is really interesting because it actsents.
- 10:09It highlights how great of a job Howie Roseman and
- 10:12Eagles Brass have done to assemble a roster that you
- 10:16could easily make a case for fifteen players sliding into
- 10:19that top five most Important Eagle spot. Nolan Smith's another one.
- 10:23Saquon Barkley. I didn't even mention in my top five.
- 10:26He would be honorable mention, but I just think that
- 10:30there are so many candidates that could slot there, and
- 10:33that is a hat tip to Howie Roseman and how
- 10:35this roster is constructed. So if you're an Eagles fan,
- 10:39which I assume you are if you're listening, you should
- 10:41feel really good about that. And there's a million different
- 10:44ways you can go with that top five most important Eagles.
- 10:46Speaker 1: There's no wrong answer.
- 10:48Speaker 2: It's obviously very subjective, but that's kind of my thought
- 10:51process as to where I land on that.
- 10:54Speaker 1: And I think it's going to really be.
- 10:58Speaker 2: A season where a lot of these players are going
- 11:00to flourish, especially with you, with the continuity and the
- 11:04coaching staff that they have in place, and the culture
- 11:07that they've established. But yeah, it's gonna be it's gonna
- 11:10be fun to watch unfold. Anyway, this has been to
- 11:12Checho Daily. I am Andrew de Checo. Have a great
- 11:15weekend everyone, and I'll talk to you on Monday.
