- 8:07this guy. He's got the whole section of the North Side locking their doors
- 8:11at six o'clock every time a housewife. Here's a straight cat. We get
- 8:13a call man for reason. Four weeks all with the same momo. I
- 8:20got the whole neighborhood staked out, five cars and a half a dozen men
- 8:22on the streets. FUNNYO, a guy'll stick to one neighborhood, like the
- 8:26pretty wealthy neighborhood. Yeah, but he's certainly no dummy professional all the way.
- 8:31You think a guy like that to keep moving. More he works that
- 8:35area, the more chance he takes getting picked up. Do you think he'd
- 8:37figure on that. That's why we've got mo files. A lot of guys
- 8:41work like that. Got a good psychologist to tell you about it. He
- 8:45scared the wits out of the Martin woman, didn't he Yeah, that's the
- 8:48first Slippy's main probably thought she was out. He's never gone into a place
- 8:52with anybody in her perform Maybe just getting brave, I don't think so.
- 8:56Once she screamed, he ran. He had a gun, and according to
- 9:01missus Martin, do you know how people get and something like that happens?
- 9:05Bergler sneaks in and surprises him when they tell your lady was carrying a machine
- 9:07gun. There were two witnesses. Chances that they both have different stories.
- 9:13Oh O, boy just robbed another house in the same area. There's ashy,
- 9:33Yeah, all right, when'd you get here? A couple of minutes?
- 9:37The woman what was the house? Came home about fifteen minutes ago.
- 9:41Put in the call. Talk to him. Yeah, got a little history.
- 9:43Crockets around back. Guy got in through the bedroom window. He got
- 9:46much quite a bit. According to the woman named Strickland, her husband's out
- 9:50of town. Oh, I don't know how we did it. We got
- 9:56this neighborhood covered like a blanket. And this guy's smart. He's proved it
- 9:58fire times now. Yes, Oh, come in, thank you, Missus
- 10:05Strickland. This is Lieutenant Guthrie and Sargeant Cargo. But this is certainly something
- 10:11new in my life. I've never been robbed before. I was frightened for
- 10:15the moment when I saw the house was such a mess and that things were
- 10:18missing. Oh, I won't you sit down. Did he take much of
- 10:22Missus stricken Well, quite a good I don't know for sure, but I'll
- 10:24be able to tell better after I make a complete check. I think I
- 10:28saw him, Yes, the burglar. I think I saw him run around
- 10:33the house. We get a good look at him. Well, it happened
- 10:35so fast. Just startled me. And the only thing I could think about
- 10:41when my antiques. We've had a number of burglaries in this neighborhood. But
- 10:45then you didn't see him very well. I don't think I could identify him
- 10:48if I saw him again. It happened too fast and very frankly, I
- 10:54was too frightened crocodile back nowadays. Yeah, but they want no lad boy's
- 10:58coming on. Put in a call right away. Could I make you some
- 11:01coffee or something? Well, thank you, I'm sorry, but we're able
- 11:05to be here for a little while. This might take some time. Oh
- 11:07that's quite all right. Anything I can do. Don't touch anything until we're
- 11:11done. We want to check the prince. Well, I'm afraid I've all
- 11:13ready. Well that's all right, but try to leave everything just as it
- 11:16is now. All right, I'll go put a pot of coffee on,
- 11:20Thank you very much. Nice. Yeah, if everybody was at co operating,
- 11:26well, let's go out and see if crockets turned up anything. Pete,
- 11:30call and make a report with all right, dick, Yeah over here,
- 11:43all right? I find anything? Oh no, not much anyway,
- 11:48missus Strickland said. He went over to the fence. I went out in
- 11:50the alley. Come, here's mostly grab over went wrong the fence here?
- 11:58See hero friend uh huh, not a very good one, but it might
- 12:03be his. And you get to allow him to make a cast. I
- 12:07said about all I've been able to turn up, and this guy is beginning
- 12:09to be a nuisance. Yeah, And We're beginning to look a little silly.
- 12:13Whole area is taked out, and he pulls one off right under our
- 12:15noses. Maybe he likes it that way, Maybe he hates cops. Well,
- 12:18rue, thing's for sure. He's not making himself any friends. Come
- 12:22on, what time has it been? More than thirty? Got a long
- 12:41time ago? Who's got the duty at three? Quite an asher? You
- 12:46know they should put in more street lights around here. Yeah, funny if
- 12:52he moved to another neighborhood. Phantom burglar strikes while the police are looking for
- 12:56him ten miles away. Swell, and it's been three days. He's had
- 13:00enough. Maybe he moved on. They win him. A guy over there,
- 13:03Well, let's check him. Hey, yeah, come here, that's
- 13:15live around here? Yes, or down the block? What's the address?

- 14:09concentrating on Burglars, I'll give him once to pay if you could pick out
- 14:11the boy we won. It's nearly three am. I going to sleep.
- 14:28Yeah, I got the four to eight tomorrow. I hold it a minute.
- 14:33I stopped the car. What is it? Back it up? I
- 14:37thought I saw something in that alley, see anything? We might throw the
- 14:46light down. That looks clear to me, and I could have swept Hey
- 14:50there, Hey, do shut go get him? How about is it?
- 15:00I'm all right, go get them? Yeah, I us Pete, I
- 15:20think I got one of the hip. You're bleeding pretty bad. Yeah,

- 17:40get a lab report on the heel prince yet I got a good care to
- 17:42check the hilaria coming good. Big months have hit him. We cropped the
- 17:47blood at the end of the alley, and we've had gotten a better look
- 17:49at him. One thing, Sure he can run. I don't think he's
- 17:52very old. I'll let you know as soon as I hear something. Right,
- 17:59thanks. See Are you sure you would like some coffee or some tea
- 18:03or something like that? Oh? Thanks? You like tea? Oh no,

- 18:11hot, you know, icy. He's good on picnics. Yeah, yeah,
- 18:15I guess it did. Yeah, but so's there. I think I
- 18:17like beer. Better set down picnics. I usually bring the kid and the
- 18:19wife makes ie team. And what time is it? Yeah, ten minutes
- 18:25later than the last time you ask. He'll be okay with gunshot takes a
- 18:30long time, Yeah, sure does. It comes to doc li Ben alright,
- 18:36you think ob good. He's walked twenty miles as a patience. They'll
- 18:41be all right, who's gonna cigarette? Yeah? Bad rule. It's there
- 18:45for a while. Then you gotta make yeah. Nice, he's lest the
- 18:53blood. They don't think it'd be wine. To see him until to morrow?
- 18:56Would it be all right? You got this one? Yeah, pretty
- 19:00for lating now, I'm not gonna tell much for that. It'll be okay,

- 19:41I just got back from there. Game feels rotten. How long is
- 19:45he end for East? A month? Actually, he's pretty lucky on.
- 19:48Yeah, well we've come up with exactly nothing. Still checking my heel Frankfurt.
- 19:53It doesn't look good. Stricking a woman reported losing about five thousand clothes
- 19:57and jewel written whenever the area good, but didn't turn up a thing.
- 20:00This guy's really smart. He's clever, and when he use that gun he
- 20:03stopped being smart. Wanting ash. Yeah, I saw him a few minutes
- 20:11ago. It's going to be all right. Why don't we get up a
- 20:12collection and buy him a pretty Nursey's and get el every point. Yeah,
- 20:18I can't tell a thing from that slug too, flat nerve. Okay,
- 20:22this is the way we set it up. We're pretty sure our boys hurt.
- 20:25There was blood in the back of the alley. I want every small
- 20:27hospital, emergency station, drug store, any place that he might go to
- 20:30get aid checked, particularly in that area. But that's a lot of territory.
- 20:34If he's hurt bad enough, he's going to go for help. I
- 20:37don't care how long it takes, so how much territory we've got to cover.
- 20:40But I want to check he's smart enough to know what doctor would turn
- 20:42in gunshot wound report and maybe detain him so he might try to take care
- 20:47of it himself. How about some of the men we got on father out
- 20:49of practice, right? I want every questionable doctor we've got a record unchecked.
- 20:55I don't think he'll try any more jobs, even if he isn't hurt
- 20:57badly. But we know he hasn't try to unload any of his takes,
- 21:00so he just might try to do it. Now, get some money and
- 21:03skip. We've got all the sources covered and distributed circulars. Every hot shop
- 21:07in the city. Now, that's what I want. Hospitals, drug stores,
- 21:08pharmacies, pawn shops, all our potential connections checked and double checked.
- 21:12I want this guy. I really want him go. Think we got something.
- 21:21Doctor Brennan overr On Temple called in about a man he just treated for
- 21:22a gun shot. Right, I'll meet you down there in the garage.
- 21:26Let's go, boys, all right, drive up, come in. Doctor
- 21:51Brennan's right. I'm got ThReD this assage and Klein. I tried to get
- 21:53him to stay. I called you as soon as he went. What you
- 21:56look like? Well, who's about my se? Maybe a few inches taller,
- 22:00but not much more. He was dark, and I'd say about thirty
- 22:06or a little less. Wasn't an old man, I guess he weighed around,
- 22:10Oh not as much as I do. Maybe one hundred and fifty or
- 22:12fifty five or what? Was he wearing a dark suit? An old one.
- 22:15Funny thing too, he had on tennis shoes, you know, the
- 22:18low one. First thing I noticed about his clothes, wearing a suit with
- 22:22white tennis shoes. How bad was he hurt? The wound wasn't too serious.
- 22:26He'd lost some blood. Buller went through the arm about eight inches up
- 22:29from the wrist, missed a bone. He said he'd been cleaning his gun.
- 22:33I told him I'd have to make out a report, and he didn't
- 22:34sing the mind. He gave me his name in the dress and started to
- 22:37leave. That's when I thought something was wrong. I asked him to stay
- 22:41until I found him the report, and he got kind of nasty, so
- 22:45I didn't press it. He looked like he could have well, he kind
- 22:48of scared me, so I let him go and called you when you're done,
- 22:52find I gave him a prescription. Prescription, Yes, I told him
- 22:56to come back tomorrow to have the arm treated, but he said he'd be
- 22:59out of a city. So I gave him a prescription. What was it
- 23:02for him? Oh? Your mysel ointment? That could do it? How
- 23:04long ago to the leed? About twenty minutes? I see. Look,
- 23:08there's only one all night pharmacy opened this early, isn't there. Yes,
- 23:11Dickson's eight o'clock would probably be the earliest on the rest. Maybe there's some
- 23:15open earlier, but I wouldn't know. Well, thank you, duntin.
- 23:18We'd like you to look at our mug file of it on mine. All
- 23:19right? What address did he give you? I wrote it down, all
- 23:23right, John Smith nine nine sixty seven South Selby. That's probably fine.
- 23:30Well, we'll check on it anyway, if you had that prescription filled,
- 23:33we'll get him. He isn't any of these. Well here's another batch,
- 23:51Doctor Brian Perish is in our fair city. I hate to admit it,
- 23:56but you're right. And then you're looking for a shot a policeman. Hope,
- 24:00I finding nothing and just to this slight case of the stigma to him,
- 24:07well filled that prescription, Well nail him. I put out on APV
- 24:10in every precinct in the city is cooperating. Now what about the address?
- 24:12Yeah, call me like the figured building ail all right? With it's gas
- 24:15station. How are they covering the drug stares and pharmasy circulars and most of
- 24:19them will be staked out. Anyone's fuilding a prescription for orion mice annointment will
- 24:23be immediately. Help here, right, this is a man Richard Davis.
- 24:30Ellie's Richard Davy. Anyone knowing the last time arrested nineteen thirty six, petty
- 24:34fifth, He's graduated. He's the man. He looks older now, but
- 24:37that's the man did six months in a day. Three previous arrests and all
- 24:41minor get out on ap B. I'll get it. You've been a big
- 24:42help, doctor, and I'm glad to do it. I could use some
- 24:45breakfast. Well, come on, we'll go downstairs and and they have a
- 24:48bite deet with you. Yeah, Big bought and Color drugstore on Adams Davie.
- 24:53I don't know, but the man's got his left ominously. It was
- 24:56his left on and he just asked how the prescription filled to Oriel mice and
- 25:00appointment. They come, my right, I just take it. I'll me
- 25:22ch Insigne's right. Where's the manager? Well, I'm the day manager.
- 25:33Is something I do with you? You, mister Simpson? Yes, Altenanthine.
- 25:37Oh oh, the man left? How long ago? We have got
- 25:40more than three four minutes? Or just before you came in? Did you
- 25:41say which way you went? No? No, but he'll be back.
- 25:45Well, how do you know that? Well, he has to pick up
- 25:47his prescription the Ooro Mison. I told the prescriptions to tell him it'd be
- 25:51about twenty minutes, and he said he'd be back. I got the circular
- 25:53this morning when we opened, and the minute he ordered the prescription, I
- 25:56called you. His arm was in the slave. Well look tell me does
- 26:00he does he look like this picture? Yes? Yes, that's the man.
- 26:04What's he doing? Now? Look if he comes back. Oh he
- 26:07will. I purposely told him it'll be twenty minutes, so i'd have time
- 26:11to call you and we'd have time to get all right. Then when he
- 26:12comes back, we'll take him as quietly as possible. Then he's not here,
- 26:18Oh no, yeah, but he should be back to pick up his
- 26:19prescription. This is mister Sims in the day minute, allright, and this
- 26:22side you're crying. He'll be with me. Won't be any shooting again,
- 26:26I don't think so much the sense. Just go about your business and don't
- 26:29mention this to any of the other employees. All right, Oh, take
- 26:32me over and introduce me to your prescriptionist. So it's twenty minutes, Ben,
- 26:51Yeah, I think you got scared. Yeah, no, telling that

- 30:04The lineup starring Bill Johnstone as Lieutenant Ben Guffery with Jack Moyle the Sergeant Pete
- 30:10Carter was written by Blake Edwards with music by Eddie Dunsteader. Featured in tonight's
- 30:15cast were High Everback, Virginia, Greg Bill Conrad, Stacey Harris, Harry
- 30:19Lang, Peter Leed, Gene Bates, John Stephenson, and Howard mcneer.
- 30:25The lineup was transcribed in Hollywood by Himide de Vayer. Next week, at
- 30:32the same time, you'll hear Jay Carrol Nash once again starring as the lovable
- 30:36Luigi. The number of Life with Luigi returns next week at this time over
- 30:40the CBS Radio network. Welcome back. Well, interesting announcement for Love with
- 30:59Luigia that show, but kind of a subtle way of saying that the lineup
- 31:11wouldn't be back the next week. The lineup was not done. It went
- 31:15on a brief hiatus of about a month, which I guess would give tom
- 31:19for the wounded officer to recover. So there'll be a Gavinheim between this week's
- 31:23episode and next week's, but no lost episodes. A couple of weeks back,
- 31:29I got a question from Mark Meenie who said I was wondering if Blake
- 31:33Edwards that wrote the show is the same Blake Edwards who directed the movie ten.
- 31:40And the answer is yes. I think I may have addressed it very
- 31:44briefly a week or so ago, but I don't think very well. Blake
- 31:48Edwards really got to start in radio. Probably what he was most famous foreign
- 31:55radio was he was the writer of the early Richard Diamond series programs. And
- 32:05of course he went on to a lot of bigger things in cinema, but
- 32:10truth be told, it all started with radio and Richard Niman, and a
- 32:15lot of those scripts became some of the more lighthearted Johnny Diller series. You
- 32:22see the type of humor that appealed to him and played into things like the
- 32:27Pink Panther movies. Of course, in the lineup we see something that's a
- 32:30little bit more serious. And for most of his life Edwards wasn't even aware
- 32:36of an old time radio going on, and people still continuing to have interest
- 32:42in the series. I read somebody was working with him in two thousand and
- 32:50eight, two thousand and nine, just before he died, and he was
- 32:57just you know, and told him that he had just been listening to some
- 33:01Richard Diamond, and he was just absolutely floored by that that people were listening
- 33:07to and enjoying the material he had put out nearly sixty years previously. All
- 33:15right, well, that will wrap it up for now. We'll be back
- 33:17on Monday with a new Johnny Dollar Cereal and join us back here next Saturday
- 33:23for another episode of the Lineup. Send your comments to Box thirteen at Great
