- 0:18Speaker 1: It becomes a brand new week, brand new work week. Anyway,
- 0:23Speaker 1: and so a new Monday. Let's get just started on
- 0:26Speaker 1: the right foot, or at least we'll try to help anyway.
- 0:29Speaker 1: Good afternoon, everybody, welcome. So the program here on Sports
- 0:33Speaker 1: Radio AM thirteen hundred is home. My name is Craig Way.
- 0:36Speaker 1: I do thank you very much for joining us. We're
- 0:39Speaker 1: with you each and every weekday afternoon Monday through Friday Friday,
- 0:43Speaker 1: right here in this radio space. We of course includes
- 0:45Speaker 1: the producer Jay Carmon. Did you stick around this weekend
- 0:49Speaker 1: or did you go back to Houston this week?
- 0:50Speaker 2: Oh?
- 0:50Speaker 3: No, you went back to Houston, didn't you?
- 0:52Speaker 4: I did. I went Saturday, came back this morning ready
- 0:56Speaker 4: to get the week going.
- 0:57Speaker 1: So you got a chance to experience that wonderful Monday
- 1:01Speaker 1: morning rush hour traffic back into the Greater Austin area.
- 1:04Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:04Speaker 4: Apparently it extends all the way to bass Drop now,
- 1:07Speaker 4: is what I understand.
- 1:09Speaker 3: It's becoming one big Megalopolai.
- 1:11Speaker 1: You know when you have a you know, all the
- 1:13Speaker 1: way through bass Drop and down that way. Before you
- 1:15Speaker 1: know it, it'll be cranking up at Lagrange, you know,
- 1:18Speaker 1: Smithfield Firs and maybe the Grange you know, at least
- 1:21Speaker 1: from that perspective, we already know that once you get
- 1:24Speaker 1: to my neck of the woods and Georgetown, far north Georgetown,
- 1:30Speaker 1: you have that, you know, it does it does work
- 1:33Speaker 1: out that way. So anyway, but glad you're back safe
- 1:36Speaker 1: and sound. Did you have a good weekend down there?
- 1:38Speaker 4: Sure it did.
- 1:39Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:39Speaker 4: Other than the pockets of torrential rain that passed through
- 1:43Speaker 4: was it was all good?
- 1:44Speaker 3: What's rain?
- 1:45Speaker 2: Rain?
- 1:46Speaker 4: You get some n I know that all too well.
- 1:48Speaker 4: After my trip to DC last week. Yeah, I actually
- 1:52Speaker 4: encountered a little bit of a sprinkle. It wasn't much.
- 1:55Speaker 1: I was up in the Dallas forth here over the weekend,
- 1:57Speaker 1: London and I went up to see some old friends
- 1:59Speaker 1: at dinner together.
- 2:00Speaker 3: Saturday.
- 2:00Speaker 1: We went to the Ranger game Friday night. Saw the
- 2:04Speaker 1: Rangers or a really good ball game. Jock Peterson with
- 2:06Speaker 1: the two run homer made the difference in sixth an
- 2:08Speaker 1: incredible play from the outfield to get Leodi Taveris at
- 2:12Speaker 1: the plate, and Texas won that game. They won the series,
- 2:16Speaker 1: although Baltimore beat him yesterday with a couple of home
- 2:20Speaker 1: runs from the polar Bear Peede Alonzo, and they won
- 2:23Speaker 1: that contest. However, with the Astros the Rangers still just
- 2:25Speaker 1: a half game back in the American League West. We
- 2:28Speaker 1: were there Friday, went to dinner with friends Saturday, and
- 2:30Speaker 1: then Sunday night we did go to that concert that
- 2:33Speaker 1: we were telling everybody about at the end of last week.
- 2:35Speaker 1: We went to see Don Felder formerly the Eagles, open
- 2:39Speaker 1: up for the Guests Who. And Don Felder still can
- 2:43Speaker 1: play that guitar and that double net guitar about as
- 2:46Speaker 1: well as anyone and played a lot of Eagles. I
- 2:49Speaker 1: think by virtue of his status and his investment in
- 2:53Speaker 1: the Eagles original company, he has license to be able
- 2:57Speaker 1: to perform Eagles music on HISH shows on his tours,
- 3:02Speaker 1: and he did. He did several life in the past.
- 3:04Speaker 1: Land he opened was already gone, he had heartache. Tonight
- 3:09Speaker 1: he closed with Hotel California. So he was good. His
- 3:12Speaker 1: band was good, but of course the main event when
- 3:13Speaker 1: we went to see was the guest Who, and they
- 3:15Speaker 1: were outstanding. It's interesting I saw a different post on
- 3:18Speaker 1: Facebook from other folks that you know, you're friends with
- 3:24Speaker 1: on Facebook, but you're not necessarily in contact with every day,
- 3:29Speaker 1: that sort of thing. And there were several other ones
- 3:33Speaker 1: who were there and it was a tremendous show.
- 3:36Speaker 3: They I'll tell you what.
- 3:38Speaker 1: Burton Cummings is seventy eight, and Randy Bachman, who of
- 3:43Speaker 1: course left later to start Bachman Turner Overdrive. He's eighty two,
- 3:47Speaker 1: and they's still crank it out. The band sounded very,
- 3:50Speaker 1: very tight. Vocals were still good. I mean Burton Cummings
- 3:55Speaker 1: belting out American woman at age seventy eight. He still
- 3:59Speaker 1: got it. So it's good to hear good to hear them.
- 4:03Speaker 1: And we had a good time at the concert last night.
- 4:06Speaker 4: I've got the set list pulled up. Eighteen songs for
- 4:08Speaker 4: those guys with a combined age of one sixty.
- 4:11Speaker 3: How about that. And they went.
- 4:15Speaker 1: Maybe a little over an hour and a half right out,
- 4:17Speaker 1: about an hour and a half. Don Felder went about
- 4:19Speaker 1: forty five minutes, and then in about an hour or so,
- 4:21Speaker 1: Like I said, yeah, they still have a very talented band.
- 4:24Speaker 1: You know, one thing that I've noticed, and I've talked
- 4:27Speaker 1: about this before, where Lynda and I have had this
- 4:29Speaker 1: kind of i don't know, pilgrimage or mission or whatever
- 4:32Speaker 1: you want to call it. It just kind of we
- 4:35Speaker 1: just kind of fell into this initiative once we got
- 4:37Speaker 1: together back in twenty eighteen to try to see as
- 4:41Speaker 1: many of the former greats of rock, some of whom
- 4:49Speaker 1: have fallen in to the hot rock category that get
- 4:53Speaker 1: and some are just rockers like Eric Clapton's catalog is
- 5:00Speaker 1: is not is definitely not yacht rock. But he's a
- 5:04Speaker 1: great classic rocker, and we went to see him not
- 5:07Speaker 1: long after we first started seeing at one Another. We
- 5:09Speaker 1: saw Bob Sieger right afterwards. Those are classic rockers. We
- 5:13Speaker 1: saw them. But we've seen, you know, into the yacht
- 5:17Speaker 1: rock category, Little Riverband and Brosia, John Porcoli.
- 5:23Speaker 3: America.
- 5:25Speaker 1: We've seen a lot of those, and then, of course,
- 5:27Speaker 1: completely separated from all of that, Herb Alpert.
- 5:31Speaker 3: At age ninety two, still going strong.
- 5:34Speaker 1: We've seen Herb and his Tijuana Brass I think three
- 5:38Speaker 1: times of the past six seven years. We've seen Boss Skaggs,
- 5:42Speaker 1: Tom Jones. I mean, we've seen a lot of stuff.
- 5:45Speaker 1: In anyway, the point being is we wanted to see
- 5:49Speaker 1: as many of these as we could before they concluded
- 5:54Speaker 1: their careers as performers. And one thing that we have
- 5:59Speaker 1: found is that the bands that they have together, because
- 6:06Speaker 1: the lead vocalists and lead guitars, so these they're still there,
- 6:10Speaker 1: but by and large their original bandmates are not so,
- 6:16Speaker 1: but what they've surrounded themselves with are really good musicians,
- 6:19Speaker 1: and they introduce them, tell them who else they've played
- 6:22Speaker 1: with over the years. Uh, and uh it's it's been Uh,
- 6:28Speaker 1: it's been very enjoyable.
- 6:29Speaker 3: So it was good seeing the guests who last time.
- 6:30Speaker 1: All right, coming up on the show today, first thing
- 6:34Speaker 1: out of the box coming up here in a few minutes.
- 6:35Speaker 1: We're going to continue our SEC football previews today. We
- 6:41Speaker 1: look at the South Carolina Gamecocks and we'll visit with
- 6:44Speaker 1: Todd Ellis. They're play by play voice, and Todd's kind
- 6:47Speaker 1: of a unique guy in his role and I'll explain
- 6:50Speaker 1: it coming up in a few minutes, but what we
- 6:53Speaker 1: have Todd of We started doing our SEC previews last
- 6:57Speaker 1: week with all of the play by play voices around
- 7:01Speaker 1: the Southeastern Conference. So it began a week could go
- 7:03Speaker 1: today with the defending conference champions of Georgia Bulldogs, we
- 7:07Speaker 1: visited with Jeff Dantler on Monday. On Tuesday, we looked
- 7:11Speaker 1: at the Arkansas Razorbacks and visited with Chuck Barrett, their
- 7:15Speaker 1: play by play voice. On Wednesday, it was the Florida
- 7:18Speaker 1: Gator Sean Kelly, their play by play voice, joined us.
- 7:22Speaker 1: On Thursday, it was whom I'm forgetting, Friday was Mississippi
- 7:28Speaker 1: State with Neil Price. I'll tell you who it was
- 7:32Speaker 1: on Thursday. Thursday was Kentucky Tom Leach he joined us,
- 7:39Speaker 1: and then on Friday it was Neil Price. So we
- 7:42Speaker 1: continue today and South Carolina will be up next and
- 7:47Speaker 1: we'll visit with Todd Ellis, their play by play voice.
- 7:50Speaker 1: We have inconceivable. This hour got a lot of airline
- 7:54Speaker 1: stories and updates, some kind of chilling and some kind
- 7:58Speaker 1: of weird and wacky a little bit there, and an
- 8:01Speaker 1: absolutely I know it's gonna it's probably gonna gross you
- 8:06Speaker 1: out when you hear about it. As it relates to
- 8:13Speaker 1: it's a fast food update, but not in the traditional
- 8:15Speaker 1: sense like we do the you know, hey, you know
- 8:17Speaker 1: Oreo has a new flavor or whatever. McDonald's is rolling
- 8:21Speaker 1: out this we have a McDonald's story, but it's of
- 8:23Speaker 1: a different issue, and we have another story that might
- 8:27Speaker 1: sound a little chilling to you. Also, also throughout the
- 8:31Speaker 1: course today, we're going to hear from long wrn's head
- 8:35Speaker 1: coach Tive Sarkeesian. He had a media availability this morning
- 8:38Speaker 1: following practice that the long Horns of course had night
- 8:41Speaker 1: practices on Friday and Saturday. We'll hear from Sark coming
- 8:45Speaker 1: up in the three o'clock hour and the four o'clock hour.
- 8:48Speaker 1: We'll also have a little bit look at the Cowboys
- 8:52Speaker 1: as we'll hear from Brian Schottenheimer, their head coach. We'll
- 8:57Speaker 1: hear from Demiko Ryan's the Texans head coaches. Well, so
- 9:00Speaker 1: we've got a lot in store today and glad to
- 9:01Speaker 1: have you with us. It is a Monday, Glad you
- 9:04Speaker 1: could join us here, and we'll also of course give
- 9:08Speaker 1: away three more copies of Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine.
- 9:12Speaker 1: You know, with these three weeks of doing SEC previews,
- 9:15Speaker 1: we're also giving away a copy of the magazine every
- 9:18Speaker 1: hour as well, so we'll do one of those the
- 9:21Speaker 1: first of those three hour three coming up in a
- 9:24Speaker 1: little bit. But up next, todd Ell, let's play by
- 9:26Speaker 1: play voice of the South Carolina game Cocks. When we
- 9:28Speaker 1: continue on a Monday on Sports Radio AM thirteen under
- 9:31Speaker 1: the zone of the iHeartRadio app.
- 9:36Speaker 5: Here on a.
- 9:37Speaker 1: Monday on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred of the zone.
- 9:41Speaker 1: Glad to have you with us here on this Monday,
- 9:44Speaker 1: Craig wait with you here alongside of the producer Jay Carman.
- 9:48Speaker 1: And so this week will reach the midway mark about
- 9:54Speaker 1: middle of the week of our SEC football previews. And
- 9:57Speaker 1: like I said, we've got one week in the books,
- 9:59Speaker 1: and we have the unique pleasure of the visiting with
- 10:02Speaker 1: all of the play by play voices of the SEC
- 10:06Speaker 1: and so we have an opportunity today to preview the
- 10:10Speaker 1: South Carolina game Cocks.
- 10:11Speaker 3: Now, folks know my background.
- 10:12Speaker 1: They knew I grew up in North Carolina and then
- 10:14Speaker 1: I go to the beach every summer and I've got
- 10:17Speaker 1: married forty years ago down to Myrtle Beach, and my
- 10:20Speaker 1: oldest son got married at Myrtle Beach about a month ago.
- 10:22Speaker 1: And so obviously I've spent a lot of time in
- 10:26Speaker 1: the Palmatta State as well as having grown up in
- 10:28Speaker 1: North Carolina.
- 10:28Speaker 3: However, our next guest.
- 10:32Speaker 1: Not only is now twenty five years as the play
- 10:37Speaker 1: by play voice of the South Carolina game Cox and Football,
- 10:40Speaker 1: which will match my time in that is thirty fifth
- 10:42Speaker 1: year on the network overall. Even though we haven't met
- 10:46Speaker 1: face to face, we share a little bit of kinship
- 10:49Speaker 1: because we both hailed from Greensboro North Carolina. Now, I
- 10:52Speaker 1: went to Ragsdale HI in Jamestown, just outside of town,
- 10:56Speaker 1: but Todd Ellis was lighting it up as a page
- 10:59Speaker 1: pie for Walter Hines Page High School and one of
- 11:03Speaker 1: the most prolific passers in North Carolina high school football history,
- 11:08Speaker 1: as well as the all time leading passer in South
- 11:11Speaker 1: Carolina game Cocks history. It's great to have you and
- 11:13Speaker 1: I appreciate you taking the time.
- 11:14Speaker 3: How are you.
- 11:15Speaker 5: Today, Todd Craig, what an intro. I guess you had
- 11:19Speaker 5: no choice.
- 11:20Speaker 2: With two Greensboro boys, you have to kind of go
- 11:22Speaker 2: at it pretty hard. But thank you. That is a
- 11:25Speaker 2: nice acknowledgment. And believe me, tell your producer very much.
- 11:30Speaker 2: Appreciate the bumper music with our boys Darius and Hoody
- 11:34Speaker 2: and the Blowfish. It's us South Carolina's own, by the way,
- 11:38Speaker 2: University South Carolina graduate since of guys Hoody. But great
- 11:42Speaker 2: to be with you, and it is strange we have
- 11:43Speaker 2: not met over that time frame and it's very excited
- 11:46Speaker 2: to talk to you. Well.
- 11:48Speaker 1: You know the interesting is obviously Texas and South Carolina
- 11:51Speaker 1: haven't met yet on the football field, and I know
- 11:54Speaker 1: that'll be coming in the newly new fangled rotation, and
- 11:58Speaker 1: let me start with that not necessary, the rotation of
- 12:01Speaker 1: our two respective institutions that we're calling games for. But overall,
- 12:06Speaker 1: so much conversation about the nine game conference schedule. What's
- 12:11Speaker 1: your impressions of hal Shane Beamber feels about it, and
- 12:15Speaker 1: really your overall take having played in the league, having
- 12:19Speaker 1: played a quarterback at the highest level collegiate football, and
- 12:23Speaker 1: now seeing the grind that is always the annual march
- 12:27Speaker 1: in the SEC now increased by one conference game.
- 12:31Speaker 2: Well, first of all, I'm a consumer, like all of
- 12:34Speaker 2: us are. You don't do what we do for a
- 12:36Speaker 2: living without loving the game. And I still number one
- 12:39Speaker 2: love the game. I still love calling it on Saturdays.
- 12:41Speaker 2: I love seeing somebody catch a time deep out route,
- 12:44Speaker 2: touches foot just inside the sideline, step out of bounds.
- 12:48Speaker 2: I mean, that's still a big time for me to watch.
- 12:50Speaker 2: And having said that, I'm like everybody else, I want
- 12:53Speaker 2: better games, and the nine game schedule in conference play
- 12:57Speaker 2: assures our TV providers that we have more competitive, high
- 13:01Speaker 2: level football games that viewers will want to watch. I
- 13:04Speaker 2: get that. I think it's a good idea, but I'll
- 13:07Speaker 2: tell you it's a punch in the throat if you
- 13:09Speaker 2: don't get in combination without some expansion of the playoff,
- 13:12Speaker 2: And that's what the coaches were sold on, and some
- 13:15Speaker 2: will say publicly that and others will hint at it strongly.
- 13:20Speaker 2: But yeah, I think there's a problem if the SEC
- 13:23Speaker 2: is somehow penalized by the fact that we expanded, of course,
- 13:27Speaker 2: increased the likelihood that we might lose the conference game,
- 13:29Speaker 2: an additional game on our schedule, and we're not getting
- 13:33Speaker 2: the benefit of the strength of schedule and looking at
- 13:35Speaker 2: who the you know whatever, twelve best teams in all
- 13:40Speaker 2: of college football at the end of the year. So
- 13:42Speaker 2: I think it's coming back. Thank you. I think is
- 13:45Speaker 2: say the least a pretty smart guy. We may have
- 13:49Speaker 2: to eat that a little bit this year. It's a
- 13:51Speaker 2: little more anngst to it. I think there afterwards we're
- 13:54Speaker 2: probably going to have a deal and what that expansion is.
- 13:57Speaker 2: But yeah, I'd rather play the conference games, and I
- 14:00Speaker 2: thing listen around here and shoot, most places, there's no
- 14:03Speaker 2: guarantee of victories playing any level of football, But you know,
- 14:08Speaker 2: I would rather are fans and people watching and be
- 14:11Speaker 2: watching have that additional conference game.
- 14:13Speaker 1: You're also in the unique position and some other guys
- 14:17Speaker 1: are like this where you have I remember talking to
- 14:20Speaker 1: Tom Leach of Kentucky about this the other day in
- 14:23Speaker 1: a similar situation where you have a couple of non
- 14:26Speaker 1: conference games to start it off with, but you have
- 14:29Speaker 1: a traditional non conference opponent at the tail end of
- 14:32Speaker 1: the regular season, that of course being Clemson. So in
- 14:36Speaker 1: that vein having only two non conference games and their
- 14:40Speaker 1: home games against kent State and Tawison, But you plunge
- 14:43Speaker 1: headlong in to conference play the next week. Now you
- 14:46Speaker 1: at Mississippi State at home, but then you got to
- 14:48Speaker 1: go to you know, Tuscaloosa right after that. Is that
- 14:52Speaker 1: going to be one of the noticeable things you'll be
- 14:53Speaker 1: looking for is how ready can the team get itself
- 14:57Speaker 1: through just two weeks of non conference play before you
- 15:00Speaker 1: begin that nine game grind in league play in week
- 15:04Speaker 1: number three.
- 15:06Speaker 2: Yeah, that's the question Craig going into the season. And
- 15:11Speaker 2: we have enough players as a nucleus to be ready
- 15:14Speaker 2: if you weren't changing some things up. And we have
- 15:16Speaker 2: Clayton White, I respect as one of the best defensive
- 15:18Speaker 2: coordinators in all of college football, if not beyond. And
- 15:22Speaker 2: we lost some players there, but we've got some studs
- 15:24Speaker 2: and I think we'll be as good or a little
- 15:26Speaker 2: bit better on defense. And we've been good enough on
- 15:28Speaker 2: defense the last couple of years to where we should
- 15:31Speaker 2: certainly not have a foreign eight record a year ago
- 15:33Speaker 2: and been better. The question is now what can we
- 15:36Speaker 2: do offensively? And Kendall Browles has come in a name
- 15:39Speaker 2: your folks, and you are familiar with Yea and Texas
- 15:44Speaker 2: and his legacy and his experience and everything we see
- 15:49Speaker 2: here and otherwise I see early is a positive sign
- 15:53Speaker 2: that he will reignite. Leonora Sellers, our quarterback who was
- 15:56Speaker 2: really a Heisman Trophy candidate at the beginning of last
- 15:59Speaker 2: year and some is in the top three and potential
- 16:02Speaker 2: NFL draft picks, and I feel strongly that he was
- 16:05Speaker 2: absolutely hamstrung last year. And you can blame some of
- 16:08Speaker 2: that on Mike Schuler. You can blame it on him.
- 16:10Speaker 2: Some you can blame it on really poor offensive line play.
- 16:14Speaker 2: But Lenoris is a much better player than that, and
- 16:17Speaker 2: that gives us great hope. But you're correct when you're
- 16:19Speaker 2: going nine straight.
- 16:21Speaker 5: And that you know that tenth game is.
- 16:24Speaker 2: Your deck gum rival. Who's ranked in top fifteen in
- 16:28Speaker 2: the country to start the season, who's out of Conference.
- 16:32Speaker 2: You know South Carolina again is I think they ranked
- 16:34Speaker 2: m ESPN did on their RPI voting thing of number
- 16:38Speaker 2: ten toughest schedule in the country. Texas is always there
- 16:41Speaker 2: of course as well, but anybody in the league is
- 16:44Speaker 2: pretty close to the top, so it will be tough.
- 16:46Speaker 2: It always is. But you know what you didn't mention.
- 16:49Speaker 2: You got a lot of specifics there, But the that
- 16:51Speaker 2: gum thing is we got Georgia the week before.
- 16:55Speaker 5: Cocting to finish the season.
- 16:56Speaker 2: You know what is that? I mean, there's somebody in
- 16:59Speaker 2: the league office it still hates the game Cocks. I
- 17:01Speaker 2: swear I never I want to be a scheduler when
- 17:05Speaker 2: I die and come back in some ways because it
- 17:08Speaker 2: does never seem to go well for us. But yeah,
- 17:10Speaker 2: we got the Bulldogs and the Tigers to end the season.
- 17:13Speaker 2: If we could find a way to make a really
- 17:15Speaker 2: good bowl game and or somehow find a way to
- 17:18Speaker 2: the playoffs, that would be a remarkable year for Shane Beemer.
- 17:21Speaker 1: To say nothing todd of having to go to Tuscaloosa,
- 17:24Speaker 1: to the swamp and to Norman on Halloween in addition
- 17:29Speaker 1: to having Texas A and M at home, and you know,
- 17:32Speaker 1: in Tennessee at home. I mean, it's it's a grind
- 17:35Speaker 1: whether you're talking about home or road, isn't it?
- 17:38Speaker 5: It really is.
- 17:39Speaker 2: I think Williams Price and a lot of places still
- 17:42Speaker 2: have great home environments that give you that edge. But
- 17:46Speaker 2: it's nullified some because now these teams, you know, like Texas,
- 17:49Speaker 2: they play in the greatest stadiums home or away every weekend.
- 17:54Speaker 2: So I think the kids get used to it. I
- 17:56Speaker 2: think it's less of an impact on the home and
- 17:58Speaker 2: away schedule. But that guy, you know, I don't like
- 18:02Speaker 2: to go to LSU on a Saturday night, There's no
- 18:05Speaker 2: question about that. The swamp on a reasonable fall day,
- 18:09Speaker 2: if they get up early on you, it is brutal.
- 18:11Speaker 2: There tons of places like that that make it really
- 18:16Speaker 2: tough to play, But you're right, all of them are tough.
- 18:19Speaker 3: Now, all of them.
- 18:20Speaker 1: Busityman todd ellis played by Playvoye of the South Carolina
- 18:23Speaker 1: game Cocks here on thirteen hundred The Zone. You brought
- 18:24Speaker 1: up Lenora's sellers, and he is viewed as being one
- 18:27Speaker 1: of the one of the top returning quarterbacks in this league.
- 18:32Speaker 1: Where have you seen the biggest growth from him over
- 18:34Speaker 1: these past couple of years?
- 18:36Speaker 3: And what are you looking for out of him this season?
- 18:39Speaker 2: Yeah, well, you know, I would say, and he would
- 18:41Speaker 2: say too, that he'd declined last year from the year before.
- 18:44Speaker 2: You know, we won six straight games with him, and
- 18:47Speaker 2: he literally, Craig, if you just went back and watched
- 18:50Speaker 2: those six games, you could tell he absolutely carried us
- 18:53Speaker 2: on his shoulders. His escapability in our league and probably
- 18:58Speaker 2: well beyond. It's like nobody has seen in the last
- 19:00Speaker 2: two years. So you think you've got him, and then
- 19:04Speaker 2: you know his six three, two hundred and forty eight pounds,
- 19:09Speaker 2: what's the dodgeball saying duck dive that you know, whatever
- 19:12Speaker 2: that thing is. He does everything to you and then
- 19:15Speaker 2: comes out of the other end of the pile and
- 19:18Speaker 2: makes a play on you, either throwing it down the
- 19:19Speaker 2: field or running and that never really changed. It's just
- 19:23Speaker 2: we were playing so poorly in the offensive line last year
- 19:25Speaker 2: it was hard to tell. And then he you know,
- 19:27Speaker 2: his mid range passing accuracy is like most young quarterbacks
- 19:32Speaker 2: always need to improve. But I don't know that I
- 19:36Speaker 2: would train him. I think the kid at Oklahoma is
- 19:41Speaker 2: really special player a quarterback. He does some of the
- 19:44Speaker 2: same things that Leonoris does. I think Lenoris is more
- 19:47Speaker 2: naturally gifted at getting away probably, But and there's some
- 19:51Speaker 2: good quarterbacks in league, don't get me wrong. It's maybe
- 19:53Speaker 2: the best in a while, by the way, I don't
- 19:55Speaker 2: have to tell you that, but I think we got
- 19:59Speaker 2: some great quarterbacks. I wouldn't trade Lenoris, particularly on a
- 20:03Speaker 2: team that might not be the greatest of talents in
- 20:07Speaker 2: the conference and has some weaknesses. He's the I think
- 20:11Speaker 2: he's the perfect thing for Briles's offense, and I have
- 20:14Speaker 2: great expectations for him. Throws a deep ball, Well, we
- 20:17Speaker 2: get some guys you can go get that. But you know,
- 20:20Speaker 2: he needs to run for six or eight touchdowns again
- 20:22Speaker 2: this year, and he needs to throw for sixty twenty
- 20:25Speaker 2: five hundred yards, and you know we're going to be
- 20:28Speaker 2: pretty tough to beat if he does that.
- 20:30Speaker 1: You know you mentioned you said we got some guys
- 20:32Speaker 1: who can can get the deep ball. I was reading
- 20:34Speaker 1: a piece in the Athletic this morning about Nick Harbor,
- 20:37Speaker 1: and they're talking about him being the number one freak
- 20:41Speaker 1: as they describe it back to back years for the
- 20:44Speaker 1: first time since they started doing that. So, how would
- 20:47Speaker 1: you describe what kind of a freak Nick Harbor is
- 20:50Speaker 1: at the wide out.
- 20:52Speaker 2: Yeah. I mean literally, sometimes I go out there and
- 20:54Speaker 2: you stand there, you catch him at the right angle.
- 20:56Speaker 2: I mean, he looks like Jadeveon Clowney, except he's saying
- 21:00Speaker 2: wide receiver, you know. I mean, he's that kind of build.
- 21:04Speaker 2: He's too forty plus, but his world class speed and
- 21:08Speaker 2: one of the fastest guys under twenty one years old
- 21:11Speaker 2: in the country. And his problem has been like a
- 21:14Speaker 2: lot of track guys, you've seen this. My gosh, the
- 21:17Speaker 2: Texas produces so many great tech track athletes who then
- 21:21Speaker 2: convert the football or at least the track athletes in general.
- 21:25Speaker 2: But you know, it's the route running. It's separating and
- 21:28Speaker 2: when you're a big.
- 21:29Speaker 5: Guy like he is, sometimes you know.
- 21:33Speaker 2: He can run the post on you. And occasionally he's
- 21:35Speaker 2: gotten better at that and pulling him in with his hands.
- 21:38Speaker 2: But man, when you really need him to shake somebody
- 21:40Speaker 2: and get that third downplay, it's been a little tougher.
- 21:42Speaker 2: I think he's grown into that role. I think he
- 21:45Speaker 2: could be. Really I don't think he's ever a sixty
- 21:48Speaker 2: pass catching guy, but he's definitely a forty to fifty
- 21:52Speaker 2: pass catching guy with six to ten touchdowns. And you know,
- 21:55Speaker 2: we got six out of him last year, and he
- 21:57Speaker 2: kept improving and he is a special to watch. But
- 22:01Speaker 2: you know, he's one of the ones you stand on
- 22:02Speaker 2: the sideline and you go all the places we go.
- 22:05Speaker 2: He stands out on everybody's team. You throw him off
- 22:10Speaker 2: anybody's bus anywhere in the league, including the NFL. He
- 22:15Speaker 2: is a special looking player.
- 22:18Speaker 1: You mentioned that some of the issues last year with
- 22:20Speaker 1: regard to Lenori's production maybe declining a little bit. Had
- 22:24Speaker 1: you said some of it might have been him, some
- 22:26Speaker 1: of it might have been the shoe offense, some of
- 22:28Speaker 1: it might have been the offensive line. How do you
- 22:30Speaker 1: feel about the offensive line this year? They do have
- 22:32Speaker 1: some returning guys, and they have some veteran guys. Even
- 22:35Speaker 1: though they might not have been starters and played a
- 22:38Speaker 1: ton of snaps, I'm sure they were probably in the
- 22:40Speaker 1: rotation just like they do here in a lot of
- 22:42Speaker 1: other places.
- 22:44Speaker 2: Well, we tried, you know, he tried to get him in,
- 22:46Speaker 2: but we were struggling so bad. It's hard to I mean,
- 22:48Speaker 2: gave everybody a shot, but we gave up forty forty
- 22:52Speaker 2: four last year, third most in the country at any level,
- 22:56Speaker 2: and so it was hard to stomach and scared to
- 22:59Speaker 2: watch Leonoris at times. You know, we got a returning guy,
- 23:04Speaker 2: just said Thompson, who was injured in the all season.
- 23:06Speaker 2: He thought about going and the portal comes back. He
- 23:09Speaker 2: was kind of your stud. Definitely played right tackle guy
- 23:13Speaker 2: and could play left tackle as well. One of the
- 23:16Speaker 2: top recruits for a couple of years ago. So he
- 23:18Speaker 2: can't play this year and then we got to carry
- 23:20Speaker 2: his peak. A transfer was like the number eight overall
- 23:23Speaker 2: guy in the transfer portal from boult Killina State. He's
- 23:27Speaker 2: playing three on three basketball and a team building thing
- 23:31Speaker 2: in the springtime and he gets a leg injury.
- 23:33Speaker 5: So he's questionable all everything.
- 23:35Speaker 2: Everything I hear is he's going to play and he
- 23:37Speaker 2: should be your right tackle stud.
- 23:40Speaker 5: But Greg, the rest.
- 23:41Speaker 2: Of them, I couldn't name two of them right now,
- 23:45Speaker 2: maybe one at the right guard spot has played that.
- 23:47Speaker 2: I mean literally as I called last year all transfers
- 23:50Speaker 2: in Coach Clements, who came in, has had a long
- 23:53Speaker 2: relationship with Coach Briles. Got to work these guys up
- 23:57Speaker 2: and this type of offense that can cover up some
- 23:59Speaker 2: of those week This is where you've got a lot
- 24:00Speaker 2: of pulling. You got a lot of guys, it's all
- 24:02Speaker 2: inside zone is fast, it's it's gonna look more like
- 24:06Speaker 2: Tennessee than Texas offensively.
- 24:10Speaker 5: And we got to cover up some of those things.
- 24:12Speaker 2: So I truly don't know. Third practice. Put the pads
- 24:15Speaker 2: on old Friday or maybe I think that's right, Yeah,
- 24:18Speaker 2: this Friday or Sunday, and I'm gonna have to learn
- 24:21Speaker 2: between now and then. I don't know these guys very well,
- 24:24Speaker 2: but I certainly hope we're we're putting out a better
- 24:27Speaker 2: group this year.
- 24:28Speaker 1: Well hopefully. One of the guys who get to know
- 24:30Speaker 1: a little bit is Christian Clark. The guy was running
- 24:33Speaker 1: back here and had a lot of promises of freshmen
- 24:35Speaker 1: before a broken leg and then showed promise and played
- 24:38Speaker 1: well enough in the bowl game and that sort of
- 24:39Speaker 1: thing before before moving on. It looks like, just from
- 24:44Speaker 1: the things I've read, that that starting spot in the
- 24:47Speaker 1: backfield is kind of up for grabs right now for
- 24:49Speaker 1: whoever can can take hold of it and hold on
- 24:52Speaker 1: to it.
- 24:54Speaker 2: Yeah. I mean, I'm you know, I'm skeptical of the
- 24:56Speaker 2: portal like everybody else is, at least for the long
- 24:59Speaker 2: term benefit and good of our game. But it is
- 25:02Speaker 2: what it is right now, So we're thrilled to have him.
- 25:04Speaker 2: Everything I hear is if he's not number one, he's
- 25:06Speaker 2: up in the top couple of those running backs. We
- 25:09Speaker 2: have a big, physical back that really struggled in Shuba's
- 25:13Speaker 2: offense in some ways a year ago named Matthew Fuller.
- 25:16Speaker 2: I've been waiting to see. He's one of those guys
- 25:19Speaker 2: that you know just absolutely runs over you. But he's
- 25:22Speaker 2: got the slide, he's got a low lean, he's perfect
- 25:25Speaker 2: for the SEC. And he's another one and in Clark
- 25:29Speaker 2: the transfer coming in as well, and we got to
- 25:32Speaker 2: get better there. You know, we had Rocket Sanders two
- 25:35Speaker 2: years ago, which is a big part of us going
- 25:38Speaker 2: on in a six game run in the regular season,
- 25:40Speaker 2: win nine games, and he did not look much like
- 25:45Speaker 2: a running team a year ago.
- 25:47Speaker 1: But before I let you go, I want to get
- 25:48Speaker 1: your thoughts on your defense, the things that kind of
- 25:50Speaker 1: stand out to you and if there is a concern
- 25:53Speaker 1: or to what might that be on the defensive side.
- 25:55Speaker 2: Of the ball. Well, Dylan Sewart's the baddest man on campus.
- 25:58Speaker 2: I can tell you that. Yeah, nicest, sweetest guy. And
- 26:05Speaker 2: Craig he's another one that you go stand beside and
- 26:07Speaker 2: you go, man, I was just thirty yards away from him.
- 26:10Speaker 2: It didn't look that intimidating. But he's a true six
- 26:13Speaker 2: to five. You know, he's got a thirty two inch waist,
- 26:17Speaker 2: you know, with two hundred and eighty pounds. Literally, that's
- 26:21Speaker 2: what led to his back problems. They say his back,
- 26:23Speaker 2: his waist, back and middle torso is so small that
- 26:27Speaker 2: he struggles to support that great speed and athleticism.
- 26:31Speaker 5: But as a coach.
- 26:33Speaker 2: Used to say that I had a great respect for
- 26:35Speaker 2: named Brad Lawing defensive ended line coach used to say,
- 26:38Speaker 2: he can run under a picnic table at full speed.
- 26:42Speaker 2: He's got that lean, he's got the absolute explosion. If
- 26:47Speaker 2: he's healthy, nobody wants to be a part of him.
- 26:50Speaker 2: We have three linebackers returning, which are all good players,
- 26:53Speaker 2: but should explode to the next level. And then I
- 26:56Speaker 2: tell you what, Clayton White has done an amazing job
- 26:59Speaker 2: all the coach. We have got some defensive backs that
- 27:02Speaker 2: has not been our problem. We have got some safeties
- 27:05Speaker 2: in corners. We can play that game. Try to just
- 27:08Speaker 2: rush four and play defense with those guys out on
- 27:11Speaker 2: the perimeter, and I feel pretty good about that. Some
- 27:14Speaker 2: new faces on the defensive line, but promising ones like
- 27:17Speaker 2: you said that the built come up through the system
- 27:19Speaker 2: a little bit matured. And you know, in this league,
- 27:23Speaker 2: if you can hold people to twenty four, twenty five
- 27:26Speaker 2: to twenty six points, you can probably win eight games,
- 27:30Speaker 2: you know, a year in that range. You know, you've
- 27:31Speaker 2: got to score thirty plus to be in this league,
- 27:35Speaker 2: and I think we'll be capable of doing that again.
- 27:38Speaker 1: He is todd ellis played by PLAYBOYE in the South
- 27:41Speaker 1: Carolina game Cox. I appreciate you doing this, todd I
- 27:43Speaker 1: hope to see this football season. That would mean that
- 27:45Speaker 1: Texas and South Carolina made it to the SEC championships.
- 27:47Speaker 2: So wouldn't that be well? If not, I'll see you
- 27:51Speaker 2: soon because we do meet up here shortly.
- 27:54Speaker 3: That's right.
- 27:55Speaker 2: I'm excited about that. Yeah, I mean too, and we
- 27:59Speaker 2: we you know, also is a great town and we
- 28:01Speaker 2: want you all to come east and South Town of
- 28:04Speaker 2: Columbia is a great southern college town and your folks
- 28:07Speaker 2: will enjoy a bunch two coming this way. So we're
- 28:11Speaker 2: thrilled to death, glad to have Texas as a brother
- 28:13Speaker 2: in the league and can't wait for the season to
- 28:16Speaker 2: get started. Thanks for calling and reaching out. Enjoyed vision.
- 28:19Speaker 3: I appreciate it, Tide, We'll see you down the road.
- 28:21Speaker 3: Thank you again.
- 28:22Speaker 1: Yes, sir, all right, that's todd ellis play by play
- 28:24Speaker 1: voice of the South Carolina game Cox Up next, we
- 28:28Speaker 1: bring you today's edition of Inconceivable. We continue on sports
- 28:31Speaker 1: Radio AM thirteen under the zone of the iHeartRadio app.
- 28:46Speaker 1: Second hour of the program here on sports Radio AM
- 28:48Speaker 1: thirteen hundred the zone, Craig Way with you alongside the
- 28:50Speaker 1: producer Jake Carmon. So we invite your contributions as well.
- 28:58Speaker 1: If you'd like to join us on the tech line,
- 29:00Speaker 1: all I have to do is text the word Texas
- 29:02Speaker 1: followed by your question or comment to eight one five
- 29:05Speaker 1: to three zero. So you text the word Texas, then
- 29:08Speaker 1: your comment or question to eight one five to three zero.
- 29:12Speaker 1: Standard messaging and data rates may apply. Also, we are
- 29:18Speaker 1: giving out the copies of Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine,
- 29:22Speaker 1: and I mentioned that you would have the opportunity to
- 29:29Speaker 1: win a copy of the magazine if you were the
- 29:35Speaker 1: random sixth person to reach us via the talkback feature
- 29:42Speaker 1: on the iHeartRadio app. Now, I just mentioned it right
- 29:46Speaker 1: before the start, right before the end of the hour,
- 29:49Speaker 1: so it as a result of that the sixth person
- 29:52Speaker 1: has not yet been registered on that, so you still
- 29:56Speaker 1: have a shot. And even if you already try to
- 30:00Speaker 1: get in and you weren't the sixth, you were before
- 30:03Speaker 1: number six, so you can re enter. That's how we've
- 30:05Speaker 1: already had one winner. And we just saw our good friend,
- 30:08Speaker 1: longtime Longhorn fan, George Hawthorn come through and pick up
- 30:12Speaker 1: his copy of Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine. So I'm
- 30:17Speaker 1: sure we'll see him at games.
- 30:18Speaker 3: He is.
- 30:19Speaker 1: He's one of those really really loyal fans, and we
- 30:23Speaker 1: have plenty of those in Austin, Texas. There's there's plenty
- 30:26Speaker 1: of those, but he's one of those who's at I
- 30:31Speaker 1: see him at games for every sport football, men's basketball,
- 30:37Speaker 1: women's basketball, baseball, softball, you name it, he is out there. So,
- 30:46Speaker 1: as I mentioned, you have an opportunity, you have an
- 30:51Speaker 1: opportunity to win one be the sixth person. Right, So
- 30:54Speaker 1: we hadn't gotten the number six yet because I just
- 30:58Speaker 1: mentioned it right for the top of the hour.
- 30:59Speaker 3: So what you do is.
- 31:01Speaker 1: You download the free and easy iHeart radio app, You
- 31:06Speaker 1: do a search for AM thirteen hundred the zone when
- 31:09Speaker 1: it comes up, and it will then you'll see a
- 31:12Speaker 1: little red button with a white microphone it tap it
- 31:16Speaker 1: and you leave us a voice message.
- 31:18Speaker 3: That's our talkback microphone.
- 31:19Speaker 1: All you have to say is I want the magazine
- 31:21Speaker 1: and your name and number, and then you do that.
- 31:24Speaker 1: If you're the sixth person, you will win a copy
- 31:27Speaker 1: of the magazine. Now, speaking of the text line, as
- 31:32Speaker 1: I was, somebody asked the question, I thirty five was
- 31:39Speaker 1: shut down in Waco. How'd you fare? Because I did
- 31:41Speaker 1: go up for the weekend of the Metroplex. It was
- 31:47Speaker 1: a mess going up Friday late Friday afternoon, but got
- 31:51Speaker 1: through it okay. But I saw all the warning signs
- 31:56Speaker 1: that said the freeway on either side of Waco. I
- 32:02Speaker 1: don't know how many miles, several miles anyway going into
- 32:04Speaker 1: and out of Waco was going to be completely shut
- 32:08Speaker 1: down from Friday night to Sunday morning. A friend, Tom Barfield,
- 32:16Speaker 1: who works on the Baylor baseball broadcast, and we're all
- 32:18Speaker 1: trying to figure out how we're going to get around
- 32:20Speaker 1: town this weekend because I thirty five is the central artery.
- 32:23Speaker 1: He lives in Robinson right there in the Waco area.
- 32:26Speaker 1: But I was able to avoid all of that because
- 32:31Speaker 1: once I got through it late on Friday afternoon. I
- 32:33Speaker 1: managed to scoot up to Arlington, making it up there
- 32:36Speaker 1: in time for the ball game on Friday night, and
- 32:39Speaker 1: we were there throughout the weekend, all the way till
- 32:43Speaker 1: pretty late last night. In fact, the concert ended about
- 32:49Speaker 1: ten thirty, give or take a few minutes. They like,
- 32:53Speaker 1: I said, the guess who played at Dickey's and Arena
- 32:55Speaker 1: and Fort Worth about an hour and a half. That
- 32:57Speaker 1: was after Don Felder had gone forty five minutes prior
- 33:00Speaker 1: to that. And it was an excellent show. Really enjoyed
- 33:02Speaker 1: the show. So when we left there, it was about
- 33:06Speaker 1: ten thirty going on ten forty five when we by
- 33:09Speaker 1: the time we got out of the parking garage and
- 33:12Speaker 1: out onto the highway and started down thirty five. So
- 33:14Speaker 1: by the time we got to Waco, everything was clean
- 33:16Speaker 1: and clear and wide open, so there was no issue
- 33:19Speaker 1: with that as well. So anyway, that was the story
- 33:27Speaker 1: with regard to Waco. Here's another story. Maybe this should
- 33:30Speaker 1: have gone and inconceived, but well, except it's happened a
- 33:32Speaker 1: bit before, and it's an ongoing thing that's going on right.
- 33:35Speaker 1: As we mentioned, a thing that came out today was
- 33:42Speaker 1: that the Little League baseball team from Tulsa that qualified
- 33:49Speaker 1: to represent the state of Oklahoma in the Southwest Region
- 33:54Speaker 1: tournament was removed from the tournament to after a player
- 34:01Speaker 1: was determined to be ineligible.
- 34:07Speaker 2: League.
- 34:07Speaker 1: What Little League issued was a statement that said, following
- 34:11Speaker 1: a recent protest related to the eligibility of players on
- 34:14Speaker 1: the Tulsa National Little League Baseball team, the League International
- 34:19Speaker 1: Tournament Committee has determined that a player who participated on
- 34:23Speaker 1: the team during the International Tournament is ineligible. As a result,
- 34:28Speaker 1: the Committee has removed Tulsa National Little League from the
- 34:31Speaker 1: Little League Baseball Southwest Region Tournament and declared its previous
- 34:35Speaker 1: game a forfeit. The decision of the Little League International
- 34:39Speaker 1: Tournament Committee is final and binding. Based on the forfeit,
- 34:43Speaker 1: the Little League Baseball Southwest Region Tournament will conclude with
- 34:48Speaker 1: a one game championship between Texas West. It's a Bernie
- 34:52Speaker 1: Little League team from Bernie who did really good last
- 34:56Speaker 1: year in Louisiana, which is Ascension Parish in Waco, Texas,
- 35:01Speaker 1: and they started an hour ago.
- 35:02Speaker 3: Said to uphold the.
- 35:03Speaker 1: Integrity of the international tournament and provide an opportunity for
- 35:07Speaker 1: every team, community, and most importantly child to have a
- 35:11Speaker 1: fair and equitable experience. The League International relies on adult
- 35:15Speaker 1: volunteers and parents to adhere to our rules, regulations, and
- 35:19Speaker 1: operating policies. The Little League Internationals committed to supporting all
- 35:23Speaker 1: children impacted by this decision and will continue to provide
- 35:26Speaker 1: support and administrative guidance to the families in Little League. So,
- 35:29Speaker 1: in other words, they had an ineligible player. According to
- 35:34Speaker 1: the National, there were a protests filed after participating yesterday.
- 35:40Speaker 1: It was reported yesterday that the complaint raised multiple questions
- 35:44Speaker 1: about the Tulsa team's compliance with Little League rules and
- 35:48Speaker 1: player eligibility requirements, and it requested investigation into the program.
- 35:55Speaker 1: The statement only announced today that one player who participated
- 35:59Speaker 1: was determined be ineligible, did not announce findings regarding the
- 36:02Speaker 1: other allegations in the protest. Also, Tulsa's softball team had
- 36:09Speaker 1: been removed just weeks after their participation involved adult volunteers
- 36:15Speaker 1: and parents. Is associated with Tulsa National had not provided
- 36:19Speaker 1: sufficient documentation to verify that all players were eligible for
- 36:23Speaker 1: the tournament on either school enrollment or bona fide habitation
- 36:27Speaker 1: within the league's official boundary.
- 36:29Speaker 4: Oh, so it's not necessarily an age thing for the
- 36:33Speaker 4: softball team, right, for the softball team, it's just maybe
- 36:35Speaker 4: you're you're grabbing somebody from a different zip code.
- 36:39Speaker 3: That's right, that's right. So maybe that was that was
- 36:42Speaker 3: the case there.
- 36:43Speaker 2: Wow.
- 36:43Speaker 4: Thanks to thanks to John on the talk back for
- 36:46Speaker 4: asking us our thoughts on that.
- 36:48Speaker 1: Well, obviously it's not the first time this sort of
- 36:53Speaker 1: thing has happened. Remember the name Danny al Monte who
- 36:57Speaker 1: played for the team that won. And I say this
- 37:02Speaker 1: all the time, Jake, when you watch the Little League
- 37:05Speaker 1: Softball or the Little League World Series for baseball, you
- 37:09Speaker 1: look at some of the kids, go, he's really twelve.
- 37:13Speaker 1: You can be thirteen as long as you're not thirteen
- 37:17Speaker 1: before I think June first or whenever the deadline is.
- 37:23Speaker 1: And I look at some of those kids and I go,
- 37:25Speaker 1: really okay. And of course they had the big scandal
- 37:28Speaker 1: when Danny al Monte, I think it was for the
- 37:30Speaker 1: New York team they're in the Little League Puerto Rican
- 37:33Speaker 1: team didn't have the correct birth certificate. They won, and
- 37:38Speaker 1: then they ended up having a forfeit. And I would
- 37:41Speaker 1: imagine that Little League is going to be very very
- 37:48Speaker 1: judicious and they're going to be very very, very much
- 37:55Speaker 1: sensitive to that type of thing about eligibility with certain kids.
- 38:00Speaker 3: So the Tulsa team is out.
- 38:03Speaker 1: It's a one game playoff between the Bernie Little League team.
- 38:07Speaker 3: That did a great job last year in the tournament.
- 38:10Speaker 1: They go under the regional category of Texas West and
- 38:14Speaker 1: they're playing Louisiana and right now they're in the fourth
- 38:19Speaker 1: inning and the Bernie team leads for nothing, so remember
- 38:24Speaker 1: they or they're in the bottom of the third and
- 38:26Speaker 1: the Bernie team is the designated home team, and they
- 38:29Speaker 1: lead four to nothing. And of course they play six
- 38:31Speaker 1: innings a little league, so if they win, they're gonna win.
- 38:33Speaker 2: The thing.
- 38:33Speaker 1: The other thing is, when this is over, I'll get
- 38:36Speaker 1: my broadcast partner, Keith Morland to join us and talk
- 38:38Speaker 1: about that the environment, what that was all about, because
- 38:41Speaker 1: Keith is on the telecast of those he's working on
- 38:43Speaker 1: the telecast of that, so bizarre thing there, but it
- 38:48Speaker 1: opens the door for either of the Texas West team
- 38:50Speaker 1: or the Louisiana team, the Texas West team being from
- 38:52Speaker 1: Bernie and they're up for nothing in the third inning,
- 38:54Speaker 1: So all right, there you go that. All right, when
- 38:56Speaker 1: we come back, we're going to hear from Longwren's coach
- 39:00Speaker 1: Steve Sarkisian from his review of the weekend and the
- 39:04Speaker 1: ongoing work in the preparation for the coming season. We'll
- 39:08Speaker 1: do that when we continue on thirteen under the Zone
- 39:10Speaker 1: in the iHeartRadio app Man, this sounds like a live artest,
- 39:15Speaker 1: which made me wonderful a minute, because this was the
- 39:17Speaker 1: song that guests who opened with last night for running
- 39:21Speaker 1: Back to the Saskatoon. They're Canadians, obviously, and Burton Cummings pointed
- 39:28Speaker 1: out they were the first. I think they were the
- 39:34Speaker 1: first Canadian band. I think he said to get a
- 39:38Speaker 1: gold record in the US, and so they had several
- 39:43Speaker 1: including a double A side what they did, so it
- 39:48Speaker 1: was really cool with that, and that's what they opened
- 39:52Speaker 1: with last night, was running Back to Saskatoon.
- 39:55Speaker 4: I like the naming of Canadian towns in the middle
- 39:58Speaker 4: of that. I was looking around the map when I
- 40:01Speaker 4: first moved to Bisbarg, North Dakota. Oh, I'm not that
- 40:03Speaker 4: far from.
- 40:03Speaker 1: Medicine Hack, Medicine Hat, Alberta. That's right, yes, and uh,
- 40:10Speaker 1: Saskatoon of course in Saskatchewan, which I think. I don't
- 40:13Speaker 1: know if it's a hometown, but I'm pretty sure. The
- 40:16Speaker 1: great and legendary Joni Mitchell is from Saskatchewan. I know
- 40:20Speaker 1: she's Canadian and uh, she's my wife's dave and and
- 40:23Speaker 1: we went a few years ago to see her at
- 40:25Speaker 1: Hollywood Bowl. It was a pretty eventful Saturday night. A
- 40:29Speaker 1: couple of years ago. Texas had the Georgia game Saturday
- 40:33Speaker 1: night and then the next morning we were out on
- 40:34Speaker 1: a seven am flight to la and saw Joni Mitchell
- 40:38Speaker 1: there at the Hollywood Bowl. It was an awful lot
- 40:40Speaker 1: of fun. Okay, here's first of all. First of all,
- 40:45Speaker 1: do we do we actually have the uh the winner's
- 40:50Speaker 1: actual uh talk back submission, the talkback response to win
- 40:59Speaker 1: the magazine from the two o'clock hour.
- 41:00Speaker 4: Yep, we do. I'll cut it off before is he.
- 41:03Speaker 4: I'll cut it off before his phone number. Okay, go ahead.
- 41:08Speaker 6: I need that magazine, Craig, John Castile.
- 41:12Speaker 1: All right, John, congratulations, you said you said I need
- 41:15Speaker 1: the magazine. That works just as well as I want
- 41:18Speaker 1: the magazine.
- 41:19Speaker 3: So you get it. John.
- 41:21Speaker 1: Now, don't despair those of you who did, because at
- 41:24Speaker 1: the top of the hour I mentioned that we had
- 41:27Speaker 1: not yet gotten to number six.
- 41:28Speaker 3: Immediately we got a whole flood of it.
- 41:31Speaker 1: So you know what I'm gonna do we have to
- 41:33Speaker 1: give away another magazine this hour here at the three
- 41:35Speaker 1: o'clock I'm gonna do it right now. So picking up
- 41:38Speaker 1: where you left off, because Jake has the grid in
- 41:40Speaker 1: front of him and it shows that John was the
- 41:43Speaker 1: sixth person to submit and on the talk back, so
- 41:50Speaker 1: I'm gonna go down to you said somebody said you
- 41:52Speaker 1: should do the thirteen hundredth person.
- 41:54Speaker 3: That would take a while.
- 41:55Speaker 4: Somebody on the text line wants me to be in
- 41:57Speaker 4: here for you know, like a twenty five hours shifting.
- 42:00Speaker 1: Yeah, because what else have you got to do? Right
- 42:03Speaker 1: I'll tell you what. We're gonna go to number twenty?
- 42:06Speaker 1: Will they get us to twenty.
- 42:07Speaker 4: Oh twenty from the original app?
- 42:09Speaker 3: The original ass?
- 42:10Speaker 4: Okay, we're not there yet, so people are people gotta
- 42:13Speaker 4: get going.
- 42:13Speaker 1: I wanted to do that and give other people a chance.
- 42:16Speaker 1: Those of you who are in the queue trying to
- 42:18Speaker 1: do it, you can resubmit. All you have to do
- 42:22Speaker 1: is again, if you haven't already downloaded the eye, if
- 42:25Speaker 1: you've already downloaded the app, you've already you're already in it.
- 42:27Speaker 1: You're already in you know, you know the procedure. All
- 42:29Speaker 1: I have to do is just open up the talk
- 42:31Speaker 1: back Mike again. So for those of you haven't done it,
- 42:34Speaker 1: you download the iHeartRadio app.
- 42:36Speaker 3: You search AM thirteen under the zone.
- 42:38Speaker 1: When it pops up, you press the red button with
- 42:41Speaker 1: a white microphone and say I want the magazine.
- 42:44Speaker 3: That's all you have to do.
- 42:45Speaker 4: Or I need the magazine.
- 42:46Speaker 3: Yeah yeah, or I need the magazine. Either way like that.
- 42:49Speaker 1: So number twenty, going back to the original entriase, from
- 42:54Speaker 1: the top of the hour, we'll get this hour's copy
- 42:58Speaker 1: of the magazine. Give away more throughout the course of
- 43:03Speaker 1: this week and next week for Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine.
- 43:05Speaker 1: Of course, Tomorrow on the program is Tuesdays with Temper,
- 43:09Speaker 1: so Greg Tepper, the editor in chief of the magazine,
- 43:12Speaker 1: will join us also tomorrow on the program. We'll talk
- 43:18Speaker 1: about the Missouri Tigers. It's first to back to back
- 43:22Speaker 1: days talking about Tigers. Mike Kelly, longtime friend of mine,
- 43:28Speaker 1: going back in our big twelve days, the voice of
- 43:31Speaker 1: the Missouri Tigers will join us tomorrow Wednesday. Those other Tigers,
- 43:35Speaker 1: well there's there's two more Tigers.
- 43:37Speaker 4: But the about the Bayou Bengals.
- 43:40Speaker 1: Yes, Chris Blair play by play voice of LSU will
- 43:44Speaker 1: join us on Wednesday. Now we've not yet gotten to Auburn,
- 43:50Speaker 1: but we will at some point.
- 43:51Speaker 4: Tiger's on the Bayou, the Tigers on the plane, that's right,
- 43:55Speaker 4: but it'll be the ones from the Bayou, and that
- 43:58Speaker 4: will be on Wednesday. But tomorrow Missouri for the preview
- 44:04Speaker 4: and we'll visit with Mike Kelly. That's a shame, Craig,
- 44:08Speaker 4: because nothing interesting happened this offseason for LSU at all,
- 44:11Speaker 4: not one bit.
- 44:12Speaker 1: So yeah, but we'll get him. Chris Blair will be
- 44:16Speaker 1: on with us on Wednesday. Let's go to hearing some
- 44:19Speaker 1: comments from Longhorn's head coach Steve Sarkisian from the media
- 44:22Speaker 1: availability this morning. First of all, he was asked how
- 44:26Speaker 1: at this point in fall camp workouts is he and
- 44:30Speaker 1: the coaching staff balancing the physicality they need to see, uh,
- 44:36Speaker 1: the intention of the intensity that they need in practice,
- 44:40Speaker 1: all of those things, wanting guys to be physical, yet
- 44:43Speaker 1: obviously you don't want anybody get hurt.
- 44:44Speaker 6: Well, I think early on in camp we can and
- 44:47Speaker 6: we will.
- 44:48Speaker 7: You know, obviously the first couple of days we don't
- 44:50Speaker 7: get to we have to be in helmets and then
- 44:52Speaker 7: we get into half pads. And for three days and
- 44:55Speaker 7: then we'll be in full pads tomorrow night. And the
- 44:58Speaker 7: way you balance it is spacing out your pract this
- 45:00Speaker 7: is as best we can. Like we we went full pads,
- 45:03Speaker 7: you know, Friday night and Saturday night. We took Sunday off.
- 45:06Speaker 7: We came out, excuse me, half pads. We came out
- 45:09Speaker 7: half pads this morning. We won't practice again till tomorrow
- 45:12Speaker 7: night in full pads. So you got to you got
- 45:14Speaker 7: to give them enough break if I can't just keep
- 45:16Speaker 7: banging on them, banging on them, banging on them. But
- 45:19Speaker 7: there's a mentality to that, there's a mindset to it
- 45:21Speaker 7: that that this team, maybe better than some other teams,
- 45:25Speaker 7: have really embraced that mindset, you know. And I think
- 45:28Speaker 7: that's a credit to the coaches as we touched on
- 45:30Speaker 7: that first practice, that that they've got these guys buying
- 45:33Speaker 7: into the physicality of which we need to play the game,
- 45:36Speaker 7: and our players aren't naive to the schedule that we
- 45:39Speaker 7: have and the teams that we're going to play, and
- 45:41Speaker 7: that physicality is is going to be required to have
- 45:44Speaker 7: the type of team in the season that we want
- 45:46Speaker 7: to have.
- 45:46Speaker 1: Okay, next, the requisite question with that five star character
- 45:52Speaker 1: label that that's been asked of a lot of the players.
- 45:54Speaker 1: In asked of coach Sarkesian in what sark is looking
- 45:58Speaker 1: for and seeing his team develop and the individuals develop
- 46:02Speaker 1: their own five star character.
- 46:04Speaker 7: Well, I'm not going to single anybody out on that
- 46:06Speaker 7: because this one's important to me that that would I
- 46:08Speaker 7: would feel really bad if I left people out. You know,
- 46:11Speaker 7: a five star character, it's not a sometime thing for us.
- 46:14Speaker 7: Who you are some of the time is who you
- 46:16Speaker 7: are all the time. And so if your level of
- 46:19Speaker 7: commitment to football is so high, you're up here doing
- 46:22Speaker 7: extra work, meeting with your coach, You're doing extra iPad
- 46:26Speaker 7: work in your dorm, You're getting in the training room,
- 46:29Speaker 7: you know, stretching, working on your body.
- 46:31Speaker 6: The coach backt in.
- 46:32Speaker 7: I expect the exact same thing when it comes to school.
- 46:34Speaker 7: Our expectation is the exact same thing. The way you
- 46:37Speaker 7: represent the University of Texas in our community. It's not
- 46:40Speaker 7: a sometime thing for us. Five star character is an
- 46:43Speaker 7: all the time thing. We don't pick and choose, right,
- 46:45Speaker 7: and so, like I said, who we are some of
- 46:47Speaker 7: the time is who we are all the time. And
- 46:49Speaker 7: the people that do that all of the time. That's
- 46:52Speaker 7: what a five star character looks like in our program.
- 46:55Speaker 1: One thing that we discussed at the start of the
- 46:58Speaker 1: camp was discussed in the office, it was discussed throughout
- 47:01Speaker 1: the course of the year is the difficulty the Longhorns
- 47:06Speaker 1: encountered the season ago with penalties on both sides of
- 47:09Speaker 1: the ball and in special teams as well. Ryan Niblett
- 47:12Speaker 1: was talking about it the other day and how they're
- 47:13Speaker 1: trying to eliminate those and Jeff Banks, the special teams coordinated,
- 47:17Speaker 1: working with them on trying to eliminate the penalties.
- 47:21Speaker 3: So Sark was asked, how do you fix that?
- 47:25Speaker 1: How do you fix the mental errors that lead to
- 47:27Speaker 1: those type of mistakes that ultimately spell penalties, which is
- 47:32Speaker 1: not good for a successful football team.
- 47:34Speaker 7: Falls on all of us. We all take responsibility for that.
- 47:37Speaker 7: And you know, it's one thing of you know, a
- 47:41Speaker 7: preaching and teaching what we want. It's one thing just
- 47:43Speaker 7: to say we don't want penalties anymore. But I have
- 47:46Speaker 7: to educate our team on how and why we're getting
- 47:49Speaker 7: the penalties we got. And so yesterday we had a good, bad,
- 47:51Speaker 7: and ugly session from the first four days and a
- 47:54Speaker 7: lot of that was talking about penalties and showing where
- 47:56Speaker 7: our penalties were occurring and how we could reduce those
- 47:59Speaker 7: penalty that we got and what that looks like. The
- 48:02Speaker 7: second is on the coaches coaching the proper technique and
- 48:05Speaker 7: the fundamentals to reduce those penalties. And then the third
- 48:08Speaker 7: is on the players and being coachable and not making
- 48:10Speaker 7: the same mistakes over and over again. And then it's
- 48:13Speaker 7: all of our ability to do it in stressful situations,
- 48:16Speaker 7: because when it's easy, it's easy. When it gets stressful,
- 48:19Speaker 7: when it gets hard, when it's hot, when we're tired,
- 48:21Speaker 7: when the crowd noise is blazing, and DKR, can we
- 48:24Speaker 7: still function and operate the way we want to?
- 48:26Speaker 6: And so those are the things we're working on right now.
- 48:28Speaker 3: Okay, all right.
- 48:30Speaker 1: There's a lot of accountability that goes into that, and
- 48:33Speaker 1: Sarka was asked things about the you know, those buzz
- 48:37Speaker 1: phrases that hear, like player led teams and the accountability
- 48:42Speaker 1: factor and those types of things.
- 48:44Speaker 7: It's one of the better teams we've had, you know, honestly,
- 48:47Speaker 7: I you know, and again I credit the guys that
- 48:49Speaker 7: are returning in the program for embodying what we believe in.
- 48:54Speaker 7: And I use the three guys that we're at at
- 48:56Speaker 7: media days, you know, Arch Calling and Trevor and there's
- 48:59Speaker 7: just a Connor Robertson, joln and McDonald, Derek Williams, a
- 49:02Speaker 7: bunch of these guys. They have to embody it first
- 49:05Speaker 7: because they have to serve as a living example for
- 49:08Speaker 7: the new guys coming in. But I give a lot
- 49:10Speaker 7: of credit a to the transfers for their buy in immediately,
- 49:14Speaker 7: and then be to our freshmen to say, I want
- 49:17Speaker 7: to be like those guys. I'm gonna do as they do.
- 49:19Speaker 7: And that's a great way to the first way to
- 49:22Speaker 7: lead is to your actions. Need to portray what your words.
- 49:26Speaker 7: And we say it all the time. Don't let your
- 49:28Speaker 7: actions betray your words. The worst leader is the one
- 49:30Speaker 7: that says do something and then does the opposite. And
- 49:33Speaker 7: so I think our leaders right now are not letting
- 49:36Speaker 7: their actions betray their words. Of the way they conduct themselves,
- 49:39Speaker 7: the way they go about their business and practice, the
- 49:41Speaker 7: way they carry themselves off the field. I think they
- 49:44Speaker 7: set a great example for our younger players and our
- 49:46Speaker 7: new faces. And then you know, when they feel comfortable
- 49:50Speaker 7: enough to check a player for who's not doing it right,
- 49:54Speaker 7: they've earned that respect and they've earned that right to
- 49:56Speaker 7: say that at that moment, and then it's that player
- 50:00Speaker 7: player b's responsibility than to fall in line.
- 50:02Speaker 3: Okay, all right.
- 50:04Speaker 1: Cole Hudson is back, as we know, and that official
- 50:08Speaker 1: word came down on Friday, so he was awarded a
- 50:11Speaker 1: fifth year of eligibility. So he's played center, he's played guard,
- 50:17Speaker 1: but of course practice has already started and it looked
- 50:19Speaker 1: like everything set with Connor Robertson at center. You know,
- 50:24Speaker 1: there is some opening at the guard spots as well,
- 50:28Speaker 1: or at least some room, some malleable type thing scenarios
- 50:35Speaker 1: that could help him fit into this. So now with
- 50:38Speaker 1: Hudson being back, Sark was asked about his progress and
- 50:42Speaker 1: about the offensive line as a whole.
- 50:43Speaker 7: You know, Cole's getting back to it. You know, it's
- 50:46Speaker 7: kind of hard to tell because he didn't get to
- 50:48Speaker 7: jump right in. You know, he has his climonization period,
- 50:51Speaker 7: so he's a little bit behind kind of where we were.
- 50:54Speaker 7: But he's working, he's doing well. It's not like we
- 50:58Speaker 7: just threw him right back in there with the ones.
- 50:59Speaker 7: He's going to earn his stripes with this team and
- 51:01Speaker 7: see how far he can take it.
- 51:03Speaker 6: You know, I will say this.
- 51:05Speaker 7: I think our offensive line is playing a really physical
- 51:07Speaker 7: brand of football right now, and I think that's a
- 51:10Speaker 7: byproduct of some experience with like Connor, with Trevor, with Brandon,
- 51:17Speaker 7: guys who have been in the system. I think Melvincioni's
- 51:20Speaker 7: playing really physical and he's going for it and and
- 51:22Speaker 7: he's got some tough matchups.
- 51:23Speaker 6: I mean, our edges are good players with with calling
- 51:27Speaker 6: and Lance and Zena and and and all those guys
- 51:29Speaker 6: that are that are doing their stuff.
- 51:31Speaker 2: Uh.
- 51:31Speaker 7: And then the competition that's going on at left guard
- 51:34Speaker 7: I think has been healthy and it's forcing those guys
- 51:36Speaker 7: to play that way as well.
- 51:37Speaker 6: So you know, I think I'll have a little better
- 51:41Speaker 6: kind of.
- 51:43Speaker 7: Layout of what it's looking like getting through the first
- 51:45Speaker 7: scrimmage on Saturday of of kind of where we're at.
- 51:49Speaker 7: But so far, these guys are are working hard and
- 51:51Speaker 7: they're they're playing tough and they're playing physical, and that
- 51:54Speaker 7: was the first thing we wanted to make sure we
- 51:56Speaker 7: address with this group.
- 51:58Speaker 6: We got plenty of work to improve upon. Think the
- 52:00Speaker 6: communication has been good.
- 52:01Speaker 7: Can it be better, sure, But but I think the
- 52:04Speaker 7: level physicality they're playing at is probably the most encouraging
- 52:07Speaker 7: thing for me.
- 52:08Speaker 1: Okay, since we're talking about the level of physicality, who
- 52:12Speaker 1: sets the physical tone for this team?
- 52:15Speaker 7: Oh gosh, I don't know if it's one guy. I'll
- 52:17Speaker 7: be honest with you, you know. I mean I think
- 52:20Speaker 7: day one in Pad's calling brought it.
- 52:22Speaker 6: You know, you could feel it.
- 52:23Speaker 7: Colin brought it, you know, rashiem Biles brings it every day,
- 52:28Speaker 7: Justin Cryer brings it, Hero Canoe, Justice Terry. I mean,
- 52:32Speaker 7: these guys are bringing it. Jilani from the safety spot.
- 52:35Speaker 7: I think those guys set the tone, you know, offensively.
- 52:39Speaker 7: You know I touched on all those old linemen. But
- 52:42Speaker 7: you know these runners are running, you know, Derek Cooper
- 52:44Speaker 7: for a young guy, he runs a physical style which
- 52:46Speaker 7: is encouraging. Emmitt Mosley blocking on the perimeter, Ryan Wingo.
- 52:50Speaker 7: These guys are physical players. And so I hate to again,
- 52:54Speaker 7: I always getting nervous naming names because these guys are
- 52:57Speaker 7: all gonna read what you guys, right, and then coach
- 52:59Speaker 7: you didn't mentioned me is playing physical?
- 53:01Speaker 6: What more do I need to do?
- 53:02Speaker 7: So I feel bad about that, but inevitably, well, they're
- 53:05Speaker 7: all playing physical, I think more so, and I'm not
- 53:08Speaker 7: going to name names. The other way, it's the guys
- 53:10Speaker 7: that aren't or weren't, especially the last couple of nights,
- 53:13Speaker 7: as physical as they need to be.
- 53:15Speaker 6: They're standing out more so than the.
- 53:17Speaker 7: Guys that are being physical because there's so many guys
- 53:20Speaker 7: being physical that the guys that aren't.
- 53:21Speaker 6: It's like that, ain't it. That's not what we're looking for.
- 53:24Speaker 7: And now we're bringing more and more guys over to
- 53:28Speaker 7: this physical category, which is a good thing.
- 53:30Speaker 1: Okay, all right, since we're on the theme of physical,
- 53:33Speaker 1: lets talk about the running back room and how physical
- 53:35Speaker 1: those guys have been.
- 53:36Speaker 6: Well, you see it in pass protection, you know.
- 53:38Speaker 7: I mean we got we got plenty of blitzes, you know,
- 53:40Speaker 7: and they got to step up and fit these guys up.
- 53:42Speaker 7: In pass pro, there's a there's a you know, you
- 53:45Speaker 7: guys see the T shirts, no thud, no play, and
- 53:48Speaker 7: so you know they've got to run with a real
- 53:50Speaker 7: sense of physicality, especially in our team run periods. I
- 53:53Speaker 7: mean today we ran sixteen straight runs, no passes, and
- 53:57Speaker 7: so you know, we want to be able to be
- 53:59Speaker 7: a team that can run the football when you know
- 54:00Speaker 7: we're going to run it and finding ways to run it,
- 54:04Speaker 7: and that's running through down safeties, who are unblocked doing
- 54:06Speaker 7: those things, and so I'm seeing that from them that
- 54:08Speaker 7: they're having the ability to do that.
- 54:10Speaker 1: All right, So we're talking about that, and he mentioned
- 54:14Speaker 1: you're seeing different guys obviously in the last season, you know,
- 54:17Speaker 1: last hour he visited with todd ellis South Carolina's played
- 54:20Speaker 1: by play voice and they have a former long worn
- 54:22Speaker 1: Christian Clark there, you know, CJ. Baxter is now in Kentucky.
- 54:26Speaker 1: Guy's transferring out of the program as well. So with
- 54:30Speaker 1: with that happened, and the new guys in like Hollywood
- 54:34Speaker 1: smothers like Realie Brown, with a couple of the youngsters
- 54:37Speaker 1: coming in as well. That the development of the running
- 54:43Speaker 1: back room is going to be very very important as
- 54:46Speaker 1: opposed to where it was a year ago.
- 54:48Speaker 7: All of those guys have been better than they were before,
- 54:52Speaker 7: which is a really good sign, you know. And you know,
- 54:55Speaker 7: we were watching tape just the other day and I
- 54:57Speaker 7: was talking to coach j Luke about that that all
- 55:00Speaker 7: these guys are better than they were in December, and
- 55:03Speaker 7: that's a good sign for us. Michael Terry, James Simon,
- 55:05Speaker 7: Ryan Nibblett like very encouraged by them to go along
- 55:09Speaker 7: with the new faces, right that are here, and so hey,
- 55:12Speaker 7: I've been here, knocked on wood where I've been sitting here,
- 55:15Speaker 7: and it was right around this day where we lost
- 55:17Speaker 7: two backs, bang bang, And next thing you know, you know,
- 55:19Speaker 7: you're playing with guys who you are in anticipating starting
- 55:22Speaker 7: the season with. And so we're developing all those guys
- 55:25Speaker 7: and we're pushing all those guys to be the best
- 55:27Speaker 7: that they can become. And we're more comfortable today with
- 55:30Speaker 7: that entire room than probably we've been in years past.
- 55:33Speaker 7: And so I'm not saying the frontline guys are all bijon,
- 55:36Speaker 7: but point being, the depth of that room is really
- 55:40Speaker 7: encouraging right now.
- 55:42Speaker 1: One thing that coaches like to do is have guest speakers.
- 55:45Speaker 1: They have different people coming in, whether they're former players
- 55:47Speaker 1: or coaches or and one thing that Sark is really
- 55:51Speaker 1: fun of, and I think this happens in a lot
- 55:55Speaker 1: of collegiate programs, bringing somebody in from outside to speak
- 55:58Speaker 1: to the team who has nothing new with college football,
- 56:03Speaker 1: but they can talk about leadership and inspiration. And I
- 56:06Speaker 1: think that's one of the things he had in mind
- 56:08Speaker 1: when he brought in Spurs head coach Mitch Johnson to
- 56:11Speaker 1: speak to the team.
- 56:12Speaker 7: Well, you know, Mitch has been a guy that I've known,
- 56:14Speaker 7: shoot all the way back to his time in Seattle,
- 56:17Speaker 7: you know, when I was at the University of Washington
- 56:19Speaker 7: and he was at Oday High School and obviously went
- 56:21Speaker 7: to Stanford, And I just think Mitch has done a
- 56:23Speaker 7: tremendous job and not an easy job. And you're an
- 56:25Speaker 7: interim coach after five games into a season for a coach,
- 56:28Speaker 7: pop that's not easy stepping into those shoes. And then
- 56:32Speaker 7: going into a season that they had last year with
- 56:34Speaker 7: some of the star power that they had, although young,
- 56:38Speaker 7: a lot of star power, and I thought the way
- 56:40Speaker 7: he managed that team last year and to overcome you know,
- 56:46Speaker 7: OKAC was supposed to be unbeatable and they go win
- 56:48Speaker 7: Game seven in Oklahoma City, but then also kind of the.
- 56:55Speaker 6: Heartache that they had at the end of the season.
- 56:57Speaker 7: And then I just thought it was really fitting what
- 56:59Speaker 7: his message and we spoke about what his messaging is
- 57:02Speaker 7: going to be to his team going into this NBA season.
- 57:05Speaker 7: I thought was very similar to our to our season,
- 57:08Speaker 7: and so consistent messaging I think is important for our players.
- 57:12Speaker 7: I don't want a bunch of different messages, I want
- 57:13Speaker 7: consistent messaging and I thought Mitch's message to the team
- 57:17Speaker 7: was fantastic.
- 57:18Speaker 3: All right, that's long runs head coach Steve Sarkey.
- 57:20Speaker 1: You want to hear more from sark next to our
- 57:22Speaker 1: we'll look at the NFL in specific, Cowboys and Textants
- 57:25Speaker 1: up next on thirteen under the Zone.
- 57:28Speaker 4: Scared scared. I can't breath, man, I can't my breaden.
- 57:36Speaker 3: Season, but he got working today here on a Monday.
- 57:44Speaker 4: We're here from Luke Combs, so aint no love in Oklahoma.
- 57:47Speaker 4: This was what brought back the uh breaks on the
- 57:51Speaker 4: ESPN coverage of the College World Series Longhorns back to
- 57:54Speaker 4: back champions and the Women's College World Series, of course,
- 57:56Speaker 4: and okay, see right, and it felt appropriate with our
- 57:59Speaker 4: Tolso Little League today.
- 58:01Speaker 1: Yeah, tell us a little league team booted out of
- 58:03Speaker 1: the Little League World Series, the team from Bernie over
- 58:07Speaker 1: in Kendall County, representing Texas West, trying to make the
- 58:11Speaker 1: most of it for nothing. I believe they're in the
- 58:14Speaker 1: fifteen now of that contest. So we'll keep you posting
- 58:17Speaker 1: on that, all right. Speaking of Texas teams, how about
- 58:19Speaker 1: the Houston Texans. Dimiko Ryans asked for starting off with
- 58:24Speaker 1: and this was from this morning what kind of progress
- 58:27Speaker 1: has he seen from Kate McDonald.
- 58:29Speaker 8: Kate has been progressing really well as a rookie. There's
- 58:32Speaker 8: a lot of huge learning curve for him, but he's
- 58:34Speaker 8: doing a good job of being attentive to what we're
- 58:36Speaker 8: asking him to do. And you see I see the
- 58:38Speaker 8: steps of him towards getting better with this. Mainly, he's
- 58:42Speaker 8: just keeping this pad level low. That's where we've been
- 58:44Speaker 8: straining at him the most. Is just low man wins
- 58:47Speaker 8: in football. He has to continued to work the very strong,
- 58:50Speaker 8: very strong kids, so he just has to play two
- 58:53Speaker 8: instrems and he'll continue.
- 58:54Speaker 3: To get better, all right.
- 58:56Speaker 1: The Texans getting ready for their preseason openers all the
- 58:59Speaker 1: rest of the NFL teams now. Of course, the Panthers
- 59:01Speaker 1: and Cardinals played the whole of Fame game, so they
- 59:03Speaker 1: have won in the books. Everybody else opens up preseason
- 59:07Speaker 1: this week and Ryan's was asked what he's looking for
- 59:12Speaker 1: in that preseason contest for his team in the.
- 59:15Speaker 8: First preseason again, I'm really looking for those guys who
- 59:18Speaker 8: are on the back end of the roster of seeing
- 59:20Speaker 8: them go out and compete for an opportunity to be
- 59:23Speaker 8: a part.
- 59:24Speaker 3: Of our team this season.
- 59:25Speaker 8: So to see those guys get as many rests as
- 59:28Speaker 8: they can handle, right, and see who's going to show
- 59:31Speaker 8: up on game day. Right, We've installed a lot, We've
- 59:35Speaker 8: coached up the fundamentals and techniques. Now can they go
- 59:39Speaker 8: do it right when the coaches aren't on the field.
- 59:41Speaker 8: Nobody's coaching you up after every single play, But can't
- 59:45Speaker 8: you go out and be a true pro and execute
- 59:48Speaker 8: your craft at a high level against different competitions.
- 59:51Speaker 6: So that's what I'm looking forward to the most.
- 59:53Speaker 1: And the Texans will be having that preseason opener on
- 59:58Speaker 1: Saturday night against the Chargers, will be going into Houston
- 1:00:02Speaker 1: to take on the Texans. Now, with regard to Gdevian Clowny,
- 1:00:07Speaker 1: remember him the ones in future Texan a way of
- 1:00:10Speaker 1: other teams including the Cowboys.
- 1:00:11Speaker 3: How's Clowny adjusting to his return to Houston.
- 1:00:14Speaker 8: Clowny is still getting adjusted to how we do things.
- 1:00:17Speaker 8: You see him probably his first day. I saw we
- 1:00:20Speaker 8: were doing a two minute drill the first day and
- 1:00:23Speaker 8: he just had a one on one rush off the
- 1:00:25Speaker 8: edge and I'm standing back there behind the quarterback and
- 1:00:28Speaker 8: he got.
- 1:00:28Speaker 6: On me quicker than I expected. So I expect to
- 1:00:31Speaker 6: see that from him.
- 1:00:32Speaker 8: Right, he's he had nine sacks last year, so still
- 1:00:35Speaker 8: very productive later in his career. So I'm encouraged by
- 1:00:39Speaker 8: what I've seen so far. And this is his first
- 1:00:41Speaker 8: few days of being here, not having a full offseason
- 1:00:45Speaker 8: with us, but to come in where he is right
- 1:00:47Speaker 8: now and it's only gonna keep getting better. I'm excited
- 1:00:50Speaker 8: to see where he winds up and how our rusker
- 1:00:53Speaker 8: looks on third down.
- 1:00:54Speaker 3: All right, let's move on to the Cowboys. Brian Schottennheimer,
- 1:00:57Speaker 3: the head coach. This was yesterday. What did he say
- 1:01:01Speaker 3: as it was described as laying into the team to
- 1:01:05Speaker 3: begin practice.
- 1:01:07Speaker 9: You know, I do a lot of things on instincts, Calvin.
- 1:01:09Speaker 9: You know, I just felt like the energy was a
- 1:01:11Speaker 9: little bit off. I felt like, you know, we broke
- 1:01:15Speaker 9: stretching bags and went to a circuit drill, and the
- 1:01:19Speaker 9: coaches weren't as organized as I thought they should be.
- 1:01:22Speaker 3: And so I'm always going to point things out.
- 1:01:24Speaker 9: That I feel and I think they got the message
- 1:01:27Speaker 9: and ended up, you know, putting together a.
- 1:01:29Speaker 3: Hell of a practice. Well that's one way to put it, Okay.
- 1:01:33Speaker 1: The Cowboys hoping their preseason on Saturday in Seattle against
- 1:01:38Speaker 1: the Seahawks, that's who they'll be dealing with, the defending
- 1:01:41Speaker 1: Super Bowl champions. But as they get ready for that,
- 1:01:45Speaker 1: and he kind of hinted it that a moment ago
- 1:01:47Speaker 1: Shotteimer was talking about the feedback he gives to his
- 1:01:50Speaker 1: guys and how he always wants this thing to be
- 1:01:53Speaker 1: completely transparent and honest.
- 1:01:55Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:01:55Speaker 9: Always, we always give those guys feedback. We always talk
- 1:01:57Speaker 9: to him about things that we see good and bad.
- 1:02:00Speaker 9: It's not just say this was wrong, this is something
- 1:02:02Speaker 9: we need to do better. It's always say, I really
- 1:02:04Speaker 9: like this drill. I thought that was great, but I
- 1:02:07Speaker 9: like the response, you know, And it's what the game
- 1:02:10Speaker 9: is about. How you respond when there's adversity. And sometimes
- 1:02:13Speaker 9: you start a game slow and you better you know,
- 1:02:16Speaker 9: figure it out.
- 1:02:17Speaker 2: All right.
- 1:02:18Speaker 1: Offensive play caller Clayton Adams, well he'll call some places
- 1:02:23Speaker 1: obviously Schottenheimer as well.
- 1:02:24Speaker 3: So what is he observing shoddy when Adams is calling play?
- 1:02:28Speaker 9: Yeah, I mean I like to watch the line of
- 1:02:30Speaker 9: scrimmage top. I mean, that's really kind of why I
- 1:02:32Speaker 9: stand over there, so I can kind of see the
- 1:02:33Speaker 9: line of scrimmage. I can kind of see are we
- 1:02:35Speaker 9: getting movement? What's the pass rush look like? You know,
- 1:02:38Speaker 9: but I'm looking at different things. I'm looking at position battles,
- 1:02:42Speaker 9: I'm looking at route concepts, how they unfold. I'm looking
- 1:02:44Speaker 9: at the skies of the defense. But I think when
- 1:02:47Speaker 9: I'm from that vantage point, the main thing I would
- 1:02:49Speaker 9: be looking at is is the line of scrimmage, because
- 1:02:51Speaker 9: you know, such an important part of the game, and
- 1:02:55Speaker 9: you know, we're pretty talented on both sides, and uh,
- 1:02:57Speaker 9: those those competitive matchups are to watch.
- 1:03:00Speaker 1: Coaches are real big and talking about body language, what
- 1:03:03Speaker 1: they're seeing in a game, more importantly, what they're seeing
- 1:03:05Speaker 1: on the practice field, and so seat embers ass is
- 1:03:09Speaker 1: he looking for something specific with regard to body language.
- 1:03:12Speaker 9: It's more tempo, you know, how fast can we get
- 1:03:14Speaker 9: in out of the huddle. You know, we have a
- 1:03:15Speaker 9: philosophy around here that we never want the defense to
- 1:03:18Speaker 9: feel like they're getting a break our tempo in and
- 1:03:21Speaker 9: out of the huddle with substitutions and breaking the huddle
- 1:03:24Speaker 9: and Cooper bb getting up there and setting it. You know,
- 1:03:27Speaker 9: this goes way back to when I first got involved
- 1:03:30Speaker 9: in coaching in Kansas City. Paul Hackett referenced it as
- 1:03:36Speaker 9: the Webby rule after Mike Webster, who the way he
- 1:03:39Speaker 9: practiced in Pittsburgh, part of the Great Steeler Championship teams.
- 1:03:44Speaker 9: I mean, he was very intent on breaking the huddle
- 1:03:48Speaker 9: crisply getting set up in a very timely fashion. And
- 1:03:52Speaker 9: so it's still called the Webby rule. Maybe it'll change
- 1:03:55Speaker 9: it to the bb rule at some point, but I'm
- 1:03:59Speaker 9: always looking for that. I think that's important.
- 1:04:01Speaker 3: Webster was a great, great player, no doubt about that.
- 1:04:04Speaker 2: One.
- 1:04:04Speaker 1: More from Shoddy this hour, Ryan Florinoy. We've heard from
- 1:04:09Speaker 1: Flow already in camp. And remember the Cowboys actually waived
- 1:04:14Speaker 1: him last August and he wasn't claimed and they brought
- 1:04:16Speaker 1: him back and then he was a real contributor. So
- 1:04:18Speaker 1: how lucky does a shot Nammer field that Floornoy wasn't
- 1:04:22Speaker 1: claimed last August.
- 1:04:24Speaker 9: Yeah, I mean, you know, it's a gamble with all
- 1:04:27Speaker 9: these decisions that we make and all the roster gamesmanship
- 1:04:31Speaker 9: that we all play.
- 1:04:32Speaker 3: But I certainly like the outcome. Yeah, with good reason.
- 1:04:37Speaker 1: The Cowboys will scrimmage and practice against the Rams this
- 1:04:43Speaker 1: week before they go up to Seattle to take on
- 1:04:45Speaker 1: the Seahawks and their pre season opener on Saturday night.
- 1:04:49Speaker 3: All right, we'll be back to wrap up Hour number two.
- 1:04:51Speaker 3: Here on thirteen under the Zone. All right, third and
- 1:05:07Speaker 3: final hour of the program. We're going to start off
- 1:05:09Speaker 3: with the drama.
- 1:05:10Speaker 1: Apparently he's over in the Little League World Series regional
- 1:05:14Speaker 1: game in wake Up, and so was the game. The
- 1:05:18Speaker 1: Texas West team, as they're called from Bernie is going
- 1:05:23Speaker 1: back to Williamsport, and I'm sure there may be some
- 1:05:26Speaker 1: returning guys on there, or might be different guys on there.
- 1:05:29Speaker 3: But they defeated Louisiana four to one. There was some.
- 1:05:35Speaker 1: Issue with a play at the plate where it had
- 1:05:38Speaker 1: to be reviewed it to It was a lengthy review
- 1:05:40Speaker 1: and the player the call on the field was upheld
- 1:05:43Speaker 1: that the player was out and Texas.
- 1:05:44Speaker 3: Ended up winning it. The Texas westing ended up winning
- 1:05:48Speaker 3: it four to one.
- 1:05:49Speaker 1: Now, one thing I see that the Little League World
- 1:05:53Speaker 1: Series has adopted something that we've seen all too regularly
- 1:05:57Speaker 1: in college athletics in the NCAA basketball tournament, the whole
- 1:06:01Speaker 1: ticket punching, holding up your ticket to go to the
- 1:06:05Speaker 1: next round there holding up the big.
- 1:06:06Speaker 3: Ticket for Bernie.
- 1:06:08Speaker 4: You're not a fan of that.
- 1:06:09Speaker 1: Oh, it's okay, it's I don't have a real big
- 1:06:12Speaker 1: problem with it. I think that I just said it's
- 1:06:14Speaker 1: just something that's made its way through to it. You know,
- 1:06:17Speaker 1: I'd noticed last year between that and then the slapping
- 1:06:23Speaker 1: your name on the board to the next round of
- 1:06:25Speaker 1: the tournament, that's really you know, accelerated. It happened in baseball,
- 1:06:30Speaker 1: it happened in women's basketball, men's basketball, as well as
- 1:06:34Speaker 1: the ticket being punched. And there are those, by the way,
- 1:06:38Speaker 1: who say there's no such thing as as punching a
- 1:06:44Speaker 1: ticket anymore. Everything's electronically scanned. Now, it's barcodes. Nobody's punching
- 1:06:49Speaker 1: a ticket anymore.
- 1:06:50Speaker 4: Get your apple wallets out, guys, we're going to Williamsport.
- 1:06:54Speaker 3: That's right.
- 1:06:54Speaker 1: Get in there and hold it near that. I had
- 1:06:57Speaker 1: to do that last night for the concert. Did it
- 1:06:59Speaker 1: Friday night for the Ranger game? You hold, hold the
- 1:07:01Speaker 1: hold the smartphone pretty close to the deal.
- 1:07:04Speaker 4: I did a story on ticketing for Texas volleyball as
- 1:07:07Speaker 4: a reporting Texas student four years ago in the journalism program,
- 1:07:11Speaker 4: and I remember putting a microphone up to that scander.
- 1:07:13Speaker 4: I wanted that sound. Did you did you get did
- 1:07:16Speaker 4: you get to get tone ding for the for the package?
- 1:07:18Speaker 2: Oh?
- 1:07:18Speaker 3: Yeah, okay, all right, that's good. You get a good
- 1:07:20Speaker 3: grade on the effort.
- 1:07:22Speaker 4: From what I remember, I had to improvise my story
- 1:07:25Speaker 4: at the last second. Though that's a different hey, different thing.
- 1:07:28Speaker 1: You got your degree and you're gainfully employed here, so
- 1:07:30Speaker 1: it must have gone well, right.
- 1:07:32Speaker 4: Well enough, don't check the transcripts. Actually they're pretty good. Okay,
- 1:07:37Speaker 4: well yeah, I won't joke.
- 1:07:39Speaker 2: Uh.
- 1:07:40Speaker 1: One thing that Jake was taken note of, and I
- 1:07:42Speaker 1: took a look at it as well. Say, you know us,
- 1:07:45Speaker 1: we'll mention some pieces, especially as it relates to college football,
- 1:07:52Speaker 1: that appear either through The Athletic or Sports Illustrated or
- 1:07:56Speaker 1: some of the other pieces, and of course including ESPN.
- 1:07:58Speaker 1: And there was a piece that came out today entitled
- 1:08:02Speaker 1: Insider Intel on College Football's Top QBS.
- 1:08:06Speaker 3: It was written by Adam Rittenberg. Now I'm here to
- 1:08:10Speaker 3: warn young.
- 1:08:11Speaker 1: That I read these things and I will draw from them,
- 1:08:21Speaker 1: you know, the the I'll glean from or try to
- 1:08:23Speaker 1: glean from them, the things that I need to glean
- 1:08:25Speaker 1: from them. But it's a lot of, as they like
- 1:08:29Speaker 1: to say in the industry, booger eating. Okay, there's a
- 1:08:33Speaker 1: lot of In other words, there's a there's an awful
- 1:08:38Speaker 1: lot of entirely much more information than you probably care
- 1:08:45Speaker 1: to digest.
- 1:08:46Speaker 3: I guess I don't care to dig.
- 1:08:48Speaker 1: Well, that's good, that's good, But you did read the piece.
- 1:08:53Speaker 1: So uh this piece again, it's the insider intel on
- 1:08:58Speaker 1: college football quarterbacks now. Rittenberg pointed out that only two
- 1:09:03Speaker 1: quarterbacks even had their name called in the first two
- 1:09:07Speaker 1: rounds of the NFL Draft in April seventh state class
- 1:09:11Speaker 1: yeah for Danda Mendoza from Indiana and Ty Simpson from Alabama,
- 1:09:16Speaker 1: and seven starters from the College Football Playoff fielder back
- 1:09:21Speaker 1: for twenty six. This group of returnees includes several projected
- 1:09:28Speaker 1: top prospects for the twenty twenty seven draft, including Dante
- 1:09:33Speaker 1: More of Oregon, CJ Card Notre Dame, arch Manning from Texas,
- 1:09:40Speaker 1: and Heisman Kennadas like Trinidad Schambliss of Ole Miss, Julian
- 1:09:45Speaker 1: Sayan from Ohio State, Gunner Stockton from Georgia, Jade Maieva
- 1:09:49Speaker 1: from USC Sam Levitt transferring from Arizona State to LSU,
- 1:09:56Speaker 1: Darien Mensa from Miami to do Of course, you know,
- 1:10:01Speaker 1: Malik Murphy transferred from Duke to Oregon State, Josh Hoover
- 1:10:05Speaker 1: from TCN and Indiana, even Drew mess Tomaker the Vandergrift
- 1:10:09Speaker 1: product transferring from North Texas to Oklahoma State.
- 1:10:12Speaker 4: So I think he's going to be awesome this year.
- 1:10:16Speaker 4: By the way, well the offense I think, and what
- 1:10:19Speaker 4: they have.
- 1:10:20Speaker 1: The biggest issue for Oklahoma State will be can they
- 1:10:22Speaker 1: protect him enough in the big twelve over the offensive line?
- 1:10:26Speaker 1: But he can within the framework of that offense, and
- 1:10:31Speaker 1: having his head coach and play caller there with him, Yeah,
- 1:10:35Speaker 1: he's set up for success for sure. And by the way,
- 1:10:37Speaker 1: having his running back and two of his receivers too
- 1:10:40Speaker 1: there makes a difference. Rittenburgh goes on to say that
- 1:10:44Speaker 1: Manning likely will be the most talked about quarterback for
- 1:10:47Speaker 1: the second straight season, but now he has some substance
- 1:10:51Speaker 1: behind the buzz after a strong finish to twenty twenty five.
- 1:10:55Speaker 1: Rittenburg goes on to say, my goal was to get
- 1:10:58Speaker 1: a range of perspectives not only about established players, but
- 1:11:02Speaker 1: up and coming ones in key roles. I spoke with coaches, coordinators,
- 1:11:06Speaker 1: and several general managers across college football to gather intel
- 1:11:10Speaker 1: on forty three of the top returning quarterbacks. I tried
- 1:11:13Speaker 1: to avoid those in competitions, so he goes conference by conference,
- 1:11:20Speaker 1: so in the SEC he's got arch Manning.
- 1:11:23Speaker 3: He's got Trinidad Chambliss.
- 1:11:25Speaker 1: He's got Gunner Stockton, He's got Sam Levitt, He's got
- 1:11:28Speaker 1: Marcel Reid from A and M. He's got John Mattier
- 1:11:30Speaker 1: from Oklahoma, Leonora Sellers from South Carolina. We visited with
- 1:11:34Speaker 1: the game Cocks played by play voice Todd Ellis in
- 1:11:36Speaker 1: the first hour of the program talking about him Byron
- 1:11:39Speaker 1: Brown of Auburn. Austin Simmons of Missouri, will ask Mike
- 1:11:45Speaker 1: Kelly play by play voice and the Missouri Tigers tomorrow
- 1:11:47Speaker 1: about him. Camarrio Taylor, Mississippi State. We've visited with Neil
- 1:11:51Speaker 1: Price the Bulldogs, played by play voice about that the
- 1:11:54Speaker 1: other day. So those are the guys that are listed
- 1:11:58Speaker 1: there that they took a close look at. And you
- 1:12:03Speaker 1: can obviously read the piece for yourself if you want,
- 1:12:05Speaker 1: but just to summarize what he said about arch Manning,
- 1:12:08Speaker 1: he said faced outside, outsized and largely unrealistic expectations entering
- 1:12:16Speaker 1: his first season as Texas started in twenty twenty five
- 1:12:19Speaker 1: and went through some predictable struggles before turning it on
- 1:12:22Speaker 1: down the stretch. He accounted for multiple touchdowns and five
- 1:12:25Speaker 1: of his final six starts rushed for two hundred eight
- 1:12:27Speaker 1: yards and three touchdowns and just sixteen carries against Texas
- 1:12:30Speaker 1: A and M and mission closed the season, and he
- 1:12:32Speaker 1: clips three hundred twenty five passing yards three times in
- 1:12:35Speaker 1: a four game stretch.
- 1:12:37Speaker 3: And there's a quote from Sarkin there that we've heard
- 1:12:39Speaker 3: before about how he went through the rough spots.
- 1:12:43Speaker 1: He says Manning's overall comfort with a constant spotlight and
- 1:12:47Speaker 1: the schematic demands should serve him well this season. An
- 1:12:52Speaker 1: SEC defensive coordinator who faced Manning and twenty twenty five
- 1:12:56Speaker 1: said Manning's maturity has stood out.
- 1:12:58Speaker 3: Here's the quote.
- 1:13:00Speaker 1: He's handled the situation better than anybody could possibly do.
- 1:13:03Speaker 1: The expectations aren't fair, so personally, I hope he has
- 1:13:06Speaker 1: a great year. Hopefully he has an off game against US.
- 1:13:09Speaker 1: And we don't know who that coordinator was, but.
- 1:13:11Speaker 4: Context sleus, we can sleuth out who that is. Based
- 1:13:14Speaker 4: on the Longhorns repeat opponents.
- 1:13:16Speaker 3: You'd have to look at that and see.
- 1:13:17Speaker 1: Another SEC defensive coordinator said he can absolutely rip it
- 1:13:22Speaker 1: like velocity accuracy. He gets a little bit out of
- 1:13:25Speaker 1: whack and make some mistakes and then people were.
- 1:13:28Speaker 3: Really defending him.
- 1:13:29Speaker 1: It's going to be really easy this year because people
- 1:13:32Speaker 1: are going to have to double cam Coleman. He's a
- 1:13:34Speaker 1: real one and so is Ryan Wingo, so it's like
- 1:13:36Speaker 1: he can't double both of them. Yep, all right, So anyway,
- 1:13:40Speaker 1: there's that's some of that.
- 1:13:42Speaker 4: Well, a couple things surprised me and here Craig when
- 1:13:44Speaker 4: I was reading through these quarterback kind of reports. Marcel
- 1:13:48Speaker 4: Reid from Texas A and M. They said, when he
- 1:13:50Speaker 4: knows what he's seeing, right, it's great, but if you
- 1:13:53Speaker 4: can confuse him, he has a hard time. He's also scariest,
- 1:13:57Speaker 4: according to an SEC defensive coordinator, when he runs. But
- 1:14:00Speaker 4: he really doesn't want to run.
- 1:14:03Speaker 3: He'd rather not.
- 1:14:04Speaker 1: He's even said that right sound by to say, I'd
- 1:14:07Speaker 1: rather be able to hit my receivers and all that.
- 1:14:09Speaker 1: He said, but I'm grown when I have to and
- 1:14:10Speaker 1: there's times obviously where he's very very dangerous, but he
- 1:14:14Speaker 1: would rather throw and not have to run.
- 1:14:16Speaker 4: And the big ten gobs of praise for Dante Moore,
- 1:14:19Speaker 4: who everybody says seems to look the part yep, Julian's saying,
- 1:14:23Speaker 4: getting a little bit of a game manager label for
- 1:14:25Speaker 4: an Ohio State team that really relied on their defense
- 1:14:28Speaker 4: last year and then not everybody sold on Bryce Underwood
- 1:14:31Speaker 4: at Michigan who put a lot of bad throws on
- 1:14:34Speaker 4: tape last year.
- 1:14:35Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:14:35Speaker 1: Yeah, we'll see how much maturity he has with it
- 1:14:38Speaker 1: on that, all right. So that's just a little bit
- 1:14:40Speaker 1: of scheming the surface on that. Or we're going to
- 1:14:43Speaker 1: hear more from long Worn's head coach Steve Sarkisian talking
- 1:14:45Speaker 1: about his entire football team, not just a quarterback when
- 1:14:49Speaker 1: we continue, and we're also going to give away another
- 1:14:51Speaker 1: copy of Day Camel's Texas Football magazine when we continue
- 1:14:54Speaker 1: on thirteen under the Zone in the iHeartRadio app one
- 1:15:01Speaker 1: of the lesser talked about tunes on the Epic and
- 1:15:07Speaker 1: on the Run album from Paul McCartney Wings, let Me
- 1:15:10Speaker 1: roll It.
- 1:15:12Speaker 2: Now.
- 1:15:12Speaker 1: I know what you're thinking as you hear that, But
- 1:15:15Speaker 1: if you listen to the lyrics, since my heart, your
- 1:15:18Speaker 1: heart is like a wheel, let me roll a wheel.
- 1:15:23Speaker 4: I wonder, Craig if that devil on Tomson was on
- 1:15:25Speaker 4: the purpose her. Yeah, well, let you hear it.
- 1:15:30Speaker 3: I can't tell you my heart is like a.
- 1:15:32Speaker 4: Real it was today. Let's see this mat Fifty four
- 1:15:38Speaker 4: years ago, pauled into McCartney and Wings arrested in Sweden, Yeah,
- 1:15:44Speaker 4: on drug possession charges when officials discovered a package of hashish.
- 1:15:49Speaker 6: That's not what let me roll.
- 1:15:50Speaker 4: It's about.
- 1:15:51Speaker 1: The album was already out, so who knows, but they
- 1:15:55Speaker 1: were touring after this album had come out and was
- 1:16:00Speaker 1: so incredibly popular. And in reading the biography of Wings
- 1:16:09Speaker 1: and it's called Wings the Story of a Band on
- 1:16:11Speaker 1: the Run, Paul McCartney says, like, I'm not I'm not
- 1:16:16Speaker 1: denying that we had substances with us in places and
- 1:16:21Speaker 1: things like that, but he said the song was more
- 1:16:24Speaker 1: about an emotional appeal with romance involved in that for
- 1:16:28Speaker 1: what that's worth, all right. In some Cowboys news, and
- 1:16:33Speaker 1: we're going to hear from Brian Schottenheimer coming up in
- 1:16:35Speaker 1: the next segment about some other topics.
- 1:16:38Speaker 3: But this just came down a while ago.
- 1:16:40Speaker 1: Quinn Williams, who was in camp and playing without a
- 1:16:44Speaker 1: future contract, has agreed to a three year extension worth
- 1:16:50Speaker 1: nearly one hundred and six million dollars. Cowboys cowner Stephen
- 1:16:54Speaker 1: Jones had previously said the team was discussing a long
- 1:16:56Speaker 1: term extension with him. So there's a three year extension.
- 1:17:00Speaker 1: He was signed through next year, so he had a
- 1:17:04Speaker 1: four year, ninety six million dollar extension with the Jets
- 1:17:08Speaker 1: back three years ago, and he was already on his
- 1:17:10Speaker 1: second contract going in to twenty twenty six, and he'd
- 1:17:15Speaker 1: continued to work and you'd heard Brian Schottenheimer say really
- 1:17:19Speaker 1: good things about him, and now they were working on
- 1:17:21Speaker 1: this deal. So they really value Williams considering one of
- 1:17:25Speaker 1: the top players at his position. Remember, the Cowboys gave
- 1:17:28Speaker 1: up a twenty twenty seven first round pick and defensive
- 1:17:32Speaker 1: tackle Mazie Smith who just didn't pan out much for
- 1:17:38Speaker 1: Williams and a second rounder at the trade deadline last year.
- 1:17:41Speaker 1: So now they've continued to demonstrate what they're expecting and
- 1:17:46Speaker 1: hoping and looking for from Quentin Williams as they have
- 1:17:49Speaker 1: signed him to a three year extension worth one hundred
- 1:17:51Speaker 1: and five point nine million.
- 1:17:54Speaker 4: Dollars, second highest paid at the position now behind Jalen Carter.
- 1:18:00Speaker 1: Long Worns have been on the practice field and Long
- 1:18:03Speaker 1: Horns head coach Steve Sarkisian this morning with media availability,
- 1:18:08Speaker 1: was talking about players who can make an impact, but
- 1:18:12Speaker 1: he was also talking about the penalty things and you know,
- 1:18:16Speaker 1: what can you do to correct the penalties because we
- 1:18:21Speaker 1: heard last hour when he talked about the mindset that
- 1:18:24Speaker 1: has to go into it. So what are they doing
- 1:18:27Speaker 1: with regard to increasing that mindset of correct the penalties.
- 1:18:30Speaker 6: I don't know if it's or anything like.
- 1:18:33Speaker 2: No.
- 1:18:33Speaker 6: I mean, we always tweak things as we go.
- 1:18:36Speaker 7: As always, the ball is critical to me this time
- 1:18:39Speaker 7: of year, you know, because everybody's fighting for more yards
- 1:18:42Speaker 7: and I can show you I can, but we got
- 1:18:45Speaker 7: to take care of the ball. And then I'm harping
- 1:18:47Speaker 7: on the defense because I just know the value of
- 1:18:50Speaker 7: the ball and game like, when you can create multiple
- 1:18:52Speaker 7: turnovers in a game, that's huge for us. And so
- 1:18:55Speaker 7: our defense is attacking the ball. We got to make
- 1:18:58Speaker 7: sure we're taking care of that ball because it's it
- 1:19:01Speaker 7: is the number one stat as it pertains to winning
- 1:19:04Speaker 7: and losing. I know, we want to talk about, you know,
- 1:19:06Speaker 7: penalties and explosive plays. The turnover margin is the number
- 1:19:10Speaker 7: one stat that equates to winning and losing football games.
- 1:19:13Speaker 7: And so I go back to that every year because
- 1:19:16Speaker 7: it is so important to our success and this year's been.
- 1:19:19Speaker 3: No different, all right. Next was asked about the.
- 1:19:24Speaker 1: Players who bring so much to practice every day, and
- 1:19:27Speaker 1: especially some of the more talented ones who can really
- 1:19:31Speaker 1: mess up a practice.
- 1:19:32Speaker 3: Guys like Colin Simmons.
- 1:19:33Speaker 7: I'm seeing that with Rashee Biles. I mean, he's a problem.
- 1:19:36Speaker 7: He has a problem, you know, and when he rushes,
- 1:19:38Speaker 7: he can do it on special teams. I mean, he
- 1:19:40Speaker 7: does a lot of different ways and so but but again,
- 1:19:44Speaker 7: I want them to keep going, you know. I want
- 1:19:46Speaker 7: calling to make it hard on Trevor and and Melvin
- 1:19:49Speaker 7: every day. I want Rashim to make it hard on
- 1:19:52Speaker 7: our guards and make it hard on our backs every
- 1:19:54Speaker 7: day because that's iron sharpens iron, and that's how we're
- 1:19:57Speaker 7: going to get better offensively.
- 1:19:58Speaker 1: I mean, and what he was saying, obviously it's Colin
- 1:20:00Speaker 1: Simmons to really make a difficult on Melvin Siani working
- 1:20:03Speaker 1: at right tackle or at left tackle, Trevor Goosby when
- 1:20:08Speaker 1: he's lining up off the edge as he does to
- 1:20:11Speaker 1: try to recavoc on the offense. He mentioned we had
- 1:20:17Speaker 1: this last hour. He said there was one point in
- 1:20:19Speaker 1: the drill where they ran sixteen consecutive running place. When
- 1:20:25Speaker 1: I heard that, it reminded me. I was doing a
- 1:20:28Speaker 1: broadcast for Westwood One play by play assignment of the
- 1:20:32Speaker 1: Iron Bowl Alabama and Auburn, and the game was at
- 1:20:36Speaker 1: Auburn and Alabama had Derrick Henry, and I think they
- 1:20:44Speaker 1: not only ran the ball thirteen straight times, I think
- 1:20:48Speaker 1: they handed it to Derrick Henry thirteen consecutive times when
- 1:20:54Speaker 1: they had a narrow lead and Auburn just couldn't stop him.
- 1:20:58Speaker 1: It was like three yards, four, then three, just enough
- 1:21:01Speaker 1: to move the chains, and there was four and then
- 1:21:02Speaker 1: a five and then a two and something like that.
- 1:21:06Speaker 2: So you know, just it was.
- 1:21:09Speaker 3: It was impressive to watch.
- 1:21:10Speaker 4: You remember his stat line from that game, Tell me
- 1:21:13Speaker 4: forty six carries and it disappeared on me, forty six
- 1:21:19Speaker 4: carries at two hundred and seventy one yards.
- 1:21:20Speaker 3: He was amazing.
- 1:21:21Speaker 1: Twenty sixteen, twenty fifteen, twenty fifteen. Yeah, and yeah, it
- 1:21:26Speaker 1: was something else. And it was on the planes. That
- 1:21:29Speaker 1: game was at Auburn when they played that year, and
- 1:21:33Speaker 1: we were just amazed by Derrick. Crackley was working the
- 1:21:36Speaker 1: broadcast with him, and of course he played. Rack played
- 1:21:39Speaker 1: at such high level, and he was amazed by what
- 1:21:42Speaker 1: Derrick Henry and what that Alabama offensive line was doing
- 1:21:46Speaker 1: and leading him down the field like that. So long
- 1:21:49Speaker 1: Worns in practice ran sixteen consecutive running plays, and so
- 1:21:53Speaker 1: Sarka was had.
- 1:21:54Speaker 3: Is that a normal thing?
- 1:21:56Speaker 6: No, that's that's definitely what we do often.
- 1:21:58Speaker 7: You know, when we're not in pads, we mix in
- 1:22:01Speaker 7: a pass play just because you can't just run into
- 1:22:04Speaker 7: each other all the time. But that's a mentality. You know,
- 1:22:07Speaker 7: we've got to run the football. It's got to be
- 1:22:09Speaker 7: our identity, and we've got to stop the run. And
- 1:22:12Speaker 7: I thought those two areas a year ago we weren't
- 1:22:14Speaker 7: good enough, and so it's not new to us, but
- 1:22:17Speaker 7: play some more of an emphasis on it.
- 1:22:19Speaker 6: Taking pride in that is something that we had to kind.
- 1:22:23Speaker 7: Of reinvent ourselves into and it's been a good start
- 1:22:27Speaker 7: to that here over the first few days.
- 1:22:28Speaker 3: All right.
- 1:22:29Speaker 1: He was asked about the linebacker room because Rasheine Biles,
- 1:22:31Speaker 1: the pit transfer, his really stood out, did so from
- 1:22:36Speaker 1: the first moment basically that he set foot on campus.
- 1:22:38Speaker 3: He's really made an impact on that.
- 1:22:41Speaker 1: So are there other linebackers who have started to emerge
- 1:22:47Speaker 1: out of that linebacker room other than Rasheine Biles.
- 1:22:50Speaker 7: I love Justin Kryer. I mean, this guy is a
- 1:22:52Speaker 7: pros pro. He's smart, he's physical. I think he's done
- 1:22:56Speaker 7: a great job of changing his body since he's come
- 1:23:00Speaker 7: into our program. He's really leaned his body up, He's
- 1:23:03Speaker 7: playing fast. He's been a great addition. Brad Spence has
- 1:23:06Speaker 7: played a really physical brand of football for US. He's
- 1:23:09Speaker 7: playing multiple spots, and I think he's a lot more
- 1:23:11Speaker 7: comfortable playing multiple spots for US. Now we all know
- 1:23:15Speaker 7: the athleticism of Tye Anthony and he's starting.
- 1:23:17Speaker 6: To flash more.
- 1:23:18Speaker 7: He flashed more today than he hasn't any practice, which
- 1:23:21Speaker 7: is a good sign. He's kind of his game's going
- 1:23:23Speaker 7: like this. All three of these young guys are encouraging
- 1:23:27Speaker 7: to me, you know, and they're all different in their
- 1:23:29Speaker 7: own right, but I think their futures very bright, and
- 1:23:33Speaker 7: we're gonna need them, you know, again you knock them on.
- 1:23:35Speaker 7: I don't know what position we're gonna need our depth.
- 1:23:38Speaker 6: And that could be one of them. And so we
- 1:23:39Speaker 6: got to keep bringing these young guys along.
- 1:23:41Speaker 1: You mentioned Justin Cryer, he's the Florida State transfer as well,
- 1:23:44Speaker 1: and ty Anthony Smith of course returning for his junior season.
- 1:23:49Speaker 1: And I was really impressed with Brad Spence when he
- 1:23:52Speaker 1: when he got in his role last year, the Arkansas
- 1:23:56Speaker 1: transfer and what he did for me. He had a
- 1:23:58Speaker 1: big Bowl game too, he played well in the Citrus Bowl. Okay,
- 1:24:03Speaker 1: uh yeah, Well why not ask about Arch again? Because
- 1:24:07Speaker 1: you know, Sarta gets asked about Arch manning a lot,
- 1:24:11Speaker 1: so he was asked about Arch and what's going on
- 1:24:13Speaker 1: with his leadership. We should tell you that this particular
- 1:24:18Speaker 1: comment had a word in it that needed to be
- 1:24:22Speaker 1: edited out.
- 1:24:23Speaker 3: Is that correct?
- 1:24:23Speaker 4: Is this your Arlow White Ted Lasso impression? What do
- 1:24:27Speaker 4: you mean we apologize for some of the.
- 1:24:29Speaker 1: Oh yeah, Or one time I heard Brent Musburger, whether
- 1:24:36Speaker 1: you or the sideline, somebody said something said an expletive,
- 1:24:38Speaker 1: and he said, we apologize for the earthy language. Earthy,
- 1:24:42Speaker 1: that's what he said, said Brent. So we just removed
- 1:24:46Speaker 1: the one word that was a little bit earthy. Uh There,
- 1:24:50Speaker 1: As Sark was talking about the bit of talking that
- 1:24:54Speaker 1: Arch can do on the practice field.
- 1:24:56Speaker 6: I think the team responds really well to Arch. You know,
- 1:24:58Speaker 6: I think Arch. Arch loves football, he loves to practice,
- 1:25:03Speaker 6: he loves to work.
- 1:25:04Speaker 7: And it's funny because Arch probably talks a little more
- 1:25:09Speaker 7: give him credit for outside of our building. Uh So,
- 1:25:12Speaker 7: in practice there's a good amount of banter that goes
- 1:25:14Speaker 7: on and and and now Arch has more confidence, he's
- 1:25:17Speaker 7: he gives a little more of that banter. He gives
- 1:25:19Speaker 7: a little more of that banter back. He and Colin
- 1:25:22Speaker 7: were getting into it today about a screenplay, and it
- 1:25:24Speaker 7: was all out of fun.
- 1:25:25Speaker 6: It's not nothing out of like negative. It's out of fun.
- 1:25:28Speaker 7: But it's you can see that they're loving practice. They're
- 1:25:31Speaker 7: loving to practice. But I think that starts when your
- 1:25:34Speaker 7: quarterback loves practice, when he's having fun being out there,
- 1:25:37Speaker 7: and you can feel those guys responding that way.
- 1:25:40Speaker 1: Okay, yeah, it's did you, by the way, did you
- 1:25:45Speaker 1: actually edit out the word or did you just quickly
- 1:25:47Speaker 1: pot down the word?
- 1:25:49Speaker 4: I edited out the word, but Craig, it's it was
- 1:25:51Speaker 4: a long day and there's nothing like you know, double
- 1:25:54Speaker 4: secret probation. Okay, I was making double shore okay by
- 1:25:57Speaker 4: potting down the s's alright.
- 1:25:58Speaker 3: Well I did.
- 1:25:59Speaker 4: Yeah you thought I was, you know, doing this like
- 1:26:01Speaker 4: gorilla style over here.
- 1:26:02Speaker 3: I didn't know you went back.
- 1:26:04Speaker 1: You started doing and then you didn't like your edit
- 1:26:06Speaker 1: before we got going, so then you were diving back.
- 1:26:07Speaker 3: I didn't know what you ultimately came up with.
- 1:26:09Speaker 4: I gotta trust my stuff a little more, okay, Yeah,
- 1:26:11Speaker 4: all right, yeah, uh.
- 1:26:14Speaker 3: Fastball, Yeah exactly.
- 1:26:16Speaker 1: Our own Cameron Parker was there and asked Sark about
- 1:26:22Speaker 1: that that thing that's already gone viral.
- 1:26:24Speaker 3: You've seen it on social media. That, uh, that Cam
- 1:26:27Speaker 3: Coleman catch radius things he elevates, right.
- 1:26:32Speaker 4: And did you see people are well? Number one, people
- 1:26:34Speaker 4: are impressed by the catch. Number two. Sure everyone is
- 1:26:37Speaker 4: playing Twitter Detective now and saying, well, why why is
- 1:26:41Speaker 4: that ball so wobbly? And behind it was a tipped
- 1:26:43Speaker 4: who threw it?
- 1:26:44Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 1:26:45Speaker 3: Right, exactly?
- 1:26:46Speaker 4: Uh?
- 1:26:47Speaker 2: And so.
- 1:26:49Speaker 3: Cam asked Sark about that whole thing in the catch radius.
- 1:26:52Speaker 7: I think that's one of his strengths, right, I Mean,
- 1:26:54Speaker 7: everybody's got strengths and weaknesses in their game, and one
- 1:26:57Speaker 7: of his strengths is his catch radius.
- 1:27:01Speaker 6: But beyond that, it's the balance and body control.
- 1:27:04Speaker 7: There's a lot of tall receivers with long arms, but
- 1:27:07Speaker 7: it's his ability to have the right balance and body
- 1:27:10Speaker 7: control and timing on balls, you know, because you can
- 1:27:15Speaker 7: have a high pass, but to time your jump, to
- 1:27:20Speaker 7: contort your body and then to have the ability to
- 1:27:22Speaker 7: make a catch like that. I just think speaks to
- 1:27:25Speaker 7: the catch radius, but also the body control to to
- 1:27:29Speaker 7: to make those types.
- 1:27:30Speaker 1: Of play, all right, any other receivers distinguishing themselves in
- 1:27:35Speaker 1: a similar type fashion.
- 1:27:36Speaker 6: I would probably say Julio Jones at Atlanta. Julio was
- 1:27:40Speaker 6: similar that way.
- 1:27:41Speaker 7: You know that that had that ability to go make
- 1:27:43Speaker 7: those high point those balls the way that he does
- 1:27:46Speaker 7: and you know, and still be a vertical threat like
- 1:27:49Speaker 7: Cam can still run. You know, he's not a possession guy.
- 1:27:52Speaker 7: He can run, and Julio is that way.
- 1:27:54Speaker 1: Yeah, to the defense, A lot of conversation about that secondary,
- 1:28:00Speaker 1: got some younger guys and't got a veteran like a
- 1:28:01Speaker 1: Jelani McDonald back there. You know Bo Mascow, the transfer
- 1:28:06Speaker 1: coming in from Rutgers him in there. Of course, you
- 1:28:09Speaker 1: have a you know, a veteran in Derek Williams who's
- 1:28:11Speaker 1: had a battle injuries, Kate Phillips going into a sophomore
- 1:28:14Speaker 1: year and cross training moving from corner to safety. So
- 1:28:18Speaker 1: how about the communication and who's going on with this
- 1:28:21Speaker 1: communication in the secondary?
- 1:28:22Speaker 6: Coach Muschamps got those guys communicating.
- 1:28:24Speaker 7: Yeah, that's like a prerequisite, right, I mean, and the
- 1:28:27Speaker 7: way he does his walkthrough is the amount of communication.
- 1:28:30Speaker 1: That that we have to do.
- 1:28:31Speaker 7: It's it's, uh, the just the amount of time we
- 1:28:35Speaker 7: put into that they're all communicating now because if they don't,
- 1:28:38Speaker 7: they hear about it, you know, And so I think
- 1:28:40Speaker 7: that that is a huge component to this. You know that, Yeah,
- 1:28:44Speaker 7: Jeelani is a great communicator, but I heard will now,
- 1:28:47Speaker 7: you know, I hear Joan. I'm hearing these other guys
- 1:28:50Speaker 7: really communicating, and and it's verbal nonverbal. Saturday night, you know,
- 1:28:53Speaker 7: we had the crowd noise cranked up in DKR, and
- 1:28:56Speaker 7: so right away when that crowd noise went on, the
- 1:28:59Speaker 7: nonverbal communication kicked in. Because it's one thing to know
- 1:29:02Speaker 7: what to say, it's another to know what to signal.
- 1:29:03Speaker 7: And so those are those are big force as well.
- 1:29:07Speaker 1: Okay, and then one more, you know, Long Runs always
- 1:29:11Speaker 1: do a couple of close scrimmages during fall camp before
- 1:29:15Speaker 1: they get ready for the start of the season. The
- 1:29:17Speaker 1: first of those is coming up this Saturday, and Sarks asked,
- 1:29:20Speaker 1: are there specific areas of focus or evaluation that will
- 1:29:25Speaker 1: come up in this first scrimmage?
- 1:29:26Speaker 7: No, No, that's not about one group or one player
- 1:29:29Speaker 7: or anything. It's going to be the totality of all
- 1:29:32Speaker 7: that we do. There'll be plenty of reps, We'll get
- 1:29:34Speaker 7: plenty of opportunities to see guys do what they want
- 1:29:36Speaker 7: to do and how they can go do it, and
- 1:29:39Speaker 7: then we'll evaluate the whole thing just like we would
- 1:29:41Speaker 7: any game.
- 1:29:41Speaker 1: Okay, all right, so there is a long runs head
- 1:29:44Speaker 1: coach Steve Sircasian from this morning's media availability, it's time
- 1:29:50Speaker 1: to give away another copy of the magazine, Dave Campbell's
- 1:29:53Speaker 1: Texas Football Magazine. We're doing one a day, one one
- 1:29:57Speaker 1: per hour each day three her show for three weeks.
- 1:30:02Speaker 1: So we begin the second week today by giving away copies.
- 1:30:06Speaker 1: And like I said, we were going all random today.
- 1:30:10Speaker 1: It was all random and random being wherever you happen
- 1:30:14Speaker 1: to land in the queue on the talk back feature
- 1:30:18Speaker 1: gives you a chance.
- 1:30:19Speaker 3: You know, it's funny. We were talking about this earlier, the.
- 1:30:26Speaker 1: QR codes and all that stuff. Our man Seapal said, heck,
- 1:30:31Speaker 1: you have to have a phone just to get into
- 1:30:32Speaker 1: a summer track meet or state meet.
- 1:30:34Speaker 3: He goes, you know us, we don't care for it.
- 1:30:37Speaker 1: Seapal then didn't do that phone thing off of that,
- 1:30:41Speaker 1: but you do need a smartphone, be it iPhone, Android, whatever,
- 1:30:47Speaker 1: you need a smartphone because you have to download the
- 1:30:49Speaker 1: iHeartRadio app. I have also discovered in some recent months
- 1:30:56Speaker 1: that one of the more scary is too strong term
- 1:31:00Speaker 1: off putting words. One of the words that kind of
- 1:31:04Speaker 1: unsettles people is the word download, like it's this big,
- 1:31:09Speaker 1: huge process to download an app on your phone. They
- 1:31:13Speaker 1: don't want to mess with the phone, or they get
- 1:31:15Speaker 1: it all balanced. I get it, I get it. There's
- 1:31:18Speaker 1: been you know, I had to adjust to that initially,
- 1:31:22Speaker 1: but it's really pretty easy to be eligible for all
- 1:31:28Speaker 1: of our contesting, including this for Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine.
- 1:31:32Speaker 1: You have to do it via the iHeartRadio app. That's
- 1:31:37Speaker 1: what our marching orders are. So the way you do
- 1:31:39Speaker 1: it is if you don't already have it downloaded on
- 1:31:43Speaker 1: your smartphone. And by the way, if you do download it,
- 1:31:45Speaker 1: you can use it for a lot more than just
- 1:31:47Speaker 1: a contest. You can listen to the shows. You can
- 1:31:50Speaker 1: leave us messages on the talk back, just like you
- 1:31:53Speaker 1: would a text in wanting to hear from us.
- 1:31:56Speaker 3: So it's got a lot of really good use uses.
- 1:31:58Speaker 1: And you can hear podcasts and you can hear radio
- 1:32:01Speaker 1: stations from all over the country by having the iHeart
- 1:32:06Speaker 1: Radio app. And it's free, it's easy to do. It
- 1:32:09Speaker 1: is easy to download and free So what you do
- 1:32:12Speaker 1: is you download the iHeartRadio app. Then you do a
- 1:32:15Speaker 1: search for us AM thirteen under the zone. Whether it's
- 1:32:18Speaker 1: your little search magnifying glass or Search Windows, search bar, whatever,
- 1:32:22Speaker 1: you do a search in there. You type AM thirteen
- 1:32:25Speaker 1: under the zone. It'll pop straight up. And when it does,
- 1:32:28Speaker 1: you'll see two buttons. One's a little white one, it's
- 1:32:30Speaker 1: triangular shape. That's to listen what's on the air. There's
- 1:32:33Speaker 1: another one it's a red button with a little white microphone.
- 1:32:38Speaker 1: That's our talkback.
- 1:32:39Speaker 3: You push that.
- 1:32:41Speaker 1: You push that button and it opens up your talkback
- 1:32:45Speaker 1: microphone and all you have to do is say the
- 1:32:47Speaker 1: words I want the magazine. Then it comes up to
- 1:32:50Speaker 1: the random nature. You have to be the thirteenth person,
- 1:32:53Speaker 1: not thirteen hundredth like somebody suggested that Jake run it
- 1:32:56Speaker 1: as thirteen hundred thirteenth. If you're the thirteenth person, all
- 1:33:02Speaker 1: you have to do as the thirteenth person on the
- 1:33:06Speaker 1: iHeartRadio app to tell us I want the magazine. So
- 1:33:09Speaker 1: good luck to you. I hope you're the thirteenth person.
- 1:33:12Speaker 1: And we're gonna talk some more cowboys and Texans coming
- 1:33:14Speaker 1: up on thirteen hundred.
- 1:33:15Speaker 3: The zone with a little.
- 1:33:18Speaker 4: We can lay it down. Can't you be looking? Time exploded?
- 1:33:25Speaker 1: Continuing here, I said I wanted the thirteenth entry there
- 1:33:29Speaker 1: on the talk back feature.
- 1:33:30Speaker 3: Can we get the thirteen? I know we were closing
- 1:33:32Speaker 3: in on it.
- 1:33:33Speaker 2: We are.
- 1:33:34Speaker 4: Let's see here almost there. I still on a shot
- 1:33:39Speaker 4: a little inside information.
- 1:33:40Speaker 1: If you hadn't gotten on board yet on the iHeartRadio app,
- 1:33:44Speaker 1: do so downloaded, search AUM thirteen under the zone, hit
- 1:33:50Speaker 1: that red butt with a white microphone and say I
- 1:33:52Speaker 1: want the magazine. You might be number thirteen and you
- 1:33:54Speaker 1: might get a copy of Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine.
- 1:33:58Speaker 1: The editor in chief of that magazine, Greg Tepper, will
- 1:34:02Speaker 1: join us for our weekly Conversation to talk college and
- 1:34:05Speaker 1: high school football and all that that entails in the
- 1:34:08Speaker 1: lone star state.
- 1:34:09Speaker 3: That'll be coming up.
- 1:34:12Speaker 1: Our man's Seatpal said, By the way, talking about that
- 1:34:14Speaker 1: cam Coleman thing, he goes, there was great debate on
- 1:34:17Speaker 1: that catch, as you mentioned, was the ball tipped if not?
- 1:34:19Speaker 3: He said, it was a pretty pass if it worked out.
- 1:34:23Speaker 4: Oh well yeah, I mean people were pointing out how
- 1:34:26Speaker 4: it came in a little bit wobbly, so that suggests
- 1:34:29Speaker 4: that it got tipped. At the line, I don't know
- 1:34:31Speaker 4: if we got any clarity on that. If we did,
- 1:34:34Speaker 4: I missed it.
- 1:34:36Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 1:34:37Speaker 1: And I don't even think Sark was even asked about that,
- 1:34:40Speaker 1: because didn't he say also at first the first part
- 1:34:43Speaker 1: of things said whow it was.
- 1:34:43Speaker 3: Hack of a catch, wasn't it?
- 1:34:45Speaker 4: But there are those out there who seek to find
- 1:34:48Speaker 4: any piece of video evidence and say, well, that's not
- 1:34:50Speaker 4: a great ball from arch Manning, good lord, And those
- 1:34:54Speaker 4: people primarily are the aggregators you see in the Twitter space.
- 1:34:59Speaker 3: Even if and let's play along for a moment.
- 1:35:01Speaker 1: Let's let's say the pass was not tipped, and let's
- 1:35:05Speaker 1: say it was a wounded duck or whatever you want
- 1:35:07Speaker 1: to call it.
- 1:35:09Speaker 3: It's one pass and a practice.
- 1:35:12Speaker 4: We don't even know who threw it.
- 1:35:14Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, I don't even know who threw it, if
- 1:35:15Speaker 1: it was large, or if it was kJ Lacy.
- 1:35:18Speaker 3: No, no, no, So anyway, it's alotted. It's a tempest
- 1:35:23Speaker 3: in the teapot.
- 1:35:24Speaker 1: If he asked me if if such a tempest even exists,
- 1:35:28Speaker 1: those who would like to know, maybe.
- 1:35:31Speaker 3: Feeling the tempest of it.
- 1:35:32Speaker 1: Anyway, back to a hearing from the Texans and the Cowboys,
- 1:35:37Speaker 1: Demiko Ryans was asked about you know when when you're looking,
- 1:35:41Speaker 1: because he's such a defensive mind about how a defensive
- 1:35:44Speaker 1: end lines up, what really determines the stance.
- 1:35:52Speaker 8: What defensive is and their stance standing up, handing a
- 1:35:56Speaker 8: dirt is really goes to their comfort level.
- 1:36:00Speaker 6: What's the situation?
- 1:36:01Speaker 8: If it's obvious past situations, I think you'll see more
- 1:36:04Speaker 8: guys have their can stand up, right? Are they working
- 1:36:08Speaker 8: you know, some type of game, some type of stunt
- 1:36:10Speaker 8: like do they want to be in the dirt? Or
- 1:36:14Speaker 8: from my point of view, is completely optional to those guys, right,
- 1:36:17Speaker 8: I let those guys have the freedom. I never played
- 1:36:21Speaker 8: d Lion and rustling passes.
- 1:36:24Speaker 6: There's a lot of creative freedom there.
- 1:36:26Speaker 8: And whatever it takes for those guys to you know,
- 1:36:29Speaker 8: be connected and as long as they're working together, going
- 1:36:31Speaker 8: through the proper steps that we teach those guys and
- 1:36:33Speaker 8: they can operate it at a at a great pace
- 1:36:37Speaker 8: and do it at the right time, and that it
- 1:36:39Speaker 8: works for me.
- 1:36:40Speaker 3: Okay, all right?
- 1:36:41Speaker 1: If he was asked about the rookie chinn end Martin Klein,
- 1:36:43Speaker 1: how's he coming along?
- 1:36:46Speaker 2: Seeing him?
- 1:36:47Speaker 8: Marlin's progressed every single day his trajectory is definitely pointing
- 1:36:51Speaker 8: up seeing them in the past game, saying, you know,
- 1:36:53Speaker 8: you guys have seen them make a lot of players
- 1:36:55Speaker 8: out here in the passing game. He's he's still learning
- 1:36:57Speaker 8: a lot. We're throwing a lot at him. But for
- 1:37:00Speaker 8: a rookie to be you know where he is at
- 1:37:02Speaker 8: this point at camp, I'm very incuraged. I'm very pleased
- 1:37:06Speaker 8: well where he is, and I'm excited to see him
- 1:37:08Speaker 8: to continue to progress. He's done a great job, so
- 1:37:12Speaker 8: I'm excited at the line of scrimmage, he's done a
- 1:37:14Speaker 8: good job. And also in a passing game, you see
- 1:37:16Speaker 8: a guy, so I mentioned before, he's a he could
- 1:37:19Speaker 8: be a big thread in a passing game.
- 1:37:21Speaker 6: So it's exciting young player to watch for.
- 1:37:23Speaker 1: This year, Texans preseason opener Saturday night at home against
- 1:37:27Speaker 1: the Chargers, the other LA team. The Rams will be
- 1:37:30Speaker 1: scrimmaging the Cowboys a joint practice if you want to
- 1:37:35Speaker 1: call it, tomorrow, and Brian Schottenheimer was asked what's the
- 1:37:37Speaker 1: biggest thing he hopes to accomplish coming out of that
- 1:37:40Speaker 1: joint practice tomorrow.
- 1:37:41Speaker 9: See these guys compete. I mean, it's always going to
- 1:37:44Speaker 9: be the big thing. I mean, this is a really
- 1:37:45Speaker 9: good football team. We're going to go up against one
- 1:37:47Speaker 9: that you know, we certainly play, you know late in
- 1:37:50Speaker 9: the year as we're pushing for the playoffs as they
- 1:37:52Speaker 9: are as well, and watch these guys compete. Again, I
- 1:37:55Speaker 9: want to see if they can maintain their use of fundamentals,
- 1:37:59Speaker 9: you know, when you're going up against a different colored
- 1:38:02Speaker 9: jersey and different than the star on the helmet. But
- 1:38:07Speaker 9: you know, that's probably the biggest thing. And again, like
- 1:38:09Speaker 9: I said, you know, because we play them, we're not
- 1:38:11Speaker 9: going to do a lot. You know, we're going to
- 1:38:13Speaker 9: just do kind of what we do, do things that
- 1:38:15Speaker 9: people know that we have. Well, might be a little
- 1:38:18Speaker 9: bit more basic on defense, but at the same time,
- 1:38:23Speaker 9: watch these guys play football against a very very talented
- 1:38:25Speaker 9: team will be good for.
- 1:38:26Speaker 3: Us, all right.
- 1:38:27Speaker 1: Next, he was asking is there any kind of a
- 1:38:30Speaker 1: road environment vibe that his team needs to take going
- 1:38:34Speaker 1: into these practices.
- 1:38:37Speaker 9: I think it's more about just you know, letting these
- 1:38:39Speaker 9: guys go and put their jerseys on, see a different
- 1:38:42Speaker 9: colored team out there, and go.
- 1:38:44Speaker 3: Pop the pads a little bit. Okay.
- 1:38:46Speaker 1: He was asked what he wants to see out of
- 1:38:48Speaker 1: his offensive tackles against those outstanding rams edge rushers and
- 1:38:55Speaker 1: the type of havoc they're capable of creating.
- 1:38:57Speaker 9: Well, the one thing about when you play tackle in
- 1:38:59Speaker 9: this league is pretty easy to see, you know. I
- 1:39:01Speaker 9: mean you're either blocking the guy or not. And I'll
- 1:39:06Speaker 9: say this about TG. You know, he's having a great camp.
- 1:39:09Speaker 9: His very first start in the National Football League was
- 1:39:12Speaker 9: against the Cleveland Browns and a pass rusher by the
- 1:39:14Speaker 9: name of Miles Garrett, who I think is an incredible
- 1:39:16Speaker 9: football player. But you know, TG did a nice job
- 1:39:18Speaker 9: in that game, and we need those matchups, we need
- 1:39:21Speaker 9: those battles.
- 1:39:22Speaker 2: You know.
- 1:39:22Speaker 9: And you know what happens in training camp is you know,
- 1:39:24Speaker 9: these guys get pretty comfortable with one another, like they
- 1:39:27Speaker 9: know their counter moves. They know, hey, this is his
- 1:39:28Speaker 9: go to speed rush move, this is his power counter.
- 1:39:32Speaker 9: And so going up against that opponent that you don't
- 1:39:34Speaker 9: really know as well is truly a great test because
- 1:39:38Speaker 9: you can't anticipate maybe what they're gonna do, and so
- 1:39:42Speaker 9: you have to react like you do on game Dame.
- 1:39:44Speaker 1: And one more question is from our friend Babe Bloffenberg,
- 1:39:46Speaker 1: and we're gonna visit with him before the season begins
- 1:39:48Speaker 1: as well.
- 1:39:49Speaker 3: On the program, But.
- 1:39:50Speaker 1: Babe asking Schottenneimer if he feels that he has to
- 1:39:56Speaker 1: fight a mindset of complacency and then picking up where
- 1:40:02Speaker 1: you left off offensively if the defense improves a little bit.
- 1:40:07Speaker 9: I didn't want to shut you down when your first
- 1:40:09Speaker 9: question a training camp. I didn't want to tell you say, hey, pause,
- 1:40:12Speaker 9: I don't look at it that way at allbe I mean,
- 1:40:14Speaker 9: we got a lot of work to do on offense.
- 1:40:16Speaker 3: I mean, oh I hear it. I mean we've put
- 1:40:18Speaker 3: it out there, got it great?
- 1:40:20Speaker 2: I love it.
- 1:40:21Speaker 9: I want us to be that, but you got to
- 1:40:22Speaker 9: do the work to do it. Teams are studying us.
- 1:40:24Speaker 9: We have to evolve, we have to be better. But
- 1:40:28Speaker 9: I have zero problem winning games three to nothing zero.
- 1:40:31Speaker 9: I just want to win. And so every team is different.
- 1:40:35Speaker 9: We're not guaranteed anything based off our performance last year
- 1:40:38Speaker 9: on offense, just like we're not guaranteed by making a
- 1:40:41Speaker 9: change on defense. It doesn't ensure that you're going to
- 1:40:44Speaker 9: have a top ten defense or a top five defense.
- 1:40:47Speaker 9: These guys determine that based on how they work, how
- 1:40:50Speaker 9: they practice, how they prepare, and the confidence comes from that.
- 1:40:54Speaker 9: I think what you see from our offense right now
- 1:40:55Speaker 9: is they're very confident. I like that absolutely, but they
- 1:40:59Speaker 9: have to back it up. And so there is the
- 1:41:02Speaker 9: thoughts of head coach Brian shown Ever, did we get
- 1:41:06Speaker 9: to the number thirteen?
- 1:41:07Speaker 2: We did? We did?
- 1:41:08Speaker 3: Okay, let's hear number thirteen. I want the magazine. My
- 1:41:15Speaker 3: name is Don Winskey. All right, Don, congratulations, you got it.
- 1:41:20Speaker 3: You got it.
- 1:41:21Speaker 1: You're number thirteen there to get a copy of Dave
- 1:41:24Speaker 1: Campbell's Texas Football magazine. Don't despair if you didn't win
- 1:41:27Speaker 1: this time. Remember we have almost two more full weeks.
- 1:41:31Speaker 1: We have four more days this week where we'll give
- 1:41:33Speaker 1: away at least one copy every hour, and then we're
- 1:41:37Speaker 1: going to do the same thing the following week, and
- 1:41:40Speaker 1: there'll be a little bit of trivia mixed team with tomorrow,
- 1:41:43Speaker 1: but still largely giving you the opportunity to win it
- 1:41:46Speaker 1: randomly as well.
- 1:41:47Speaker 4: It's getting harder to win though. Our numbers are. Participation
- 1:41:51Speaker 4: way up today. Well yeah, and that's getting excited. Yeah, Well,
- 1:41:54Speaker 4: that's good. We're getting closer to the football season. We'll
- 1:41:57Speaker 4: be back to wrap up today's edition of the program
- 1:41:58Speaker 4: on thirteen Under the Zone
