- 0:00Speaker 1: I'm joined on the line right now by Northern Territory
- 0:02Speaker 1: Senior sergeant with the Northern Territory Police, Paul Kirkby.
- 0:06Speaker 2: Good morning to you, Paul.
- 0:09Speaker 3: Good morning Katie.
- 0:10Speaker 2: Paul.
- 0:10Speaker 1: Thanks so much for your time this morning. Now, I
- 0:13Speaker 1: know that earlier in the week we had a terrible situation.
- 0:17Speaker 1: Forty one year old's been charged following an aggravated assault
- 0:21Speaker 1: in Winelli.
- 0:22Speaker 2: What day was that one? What day did that happen?
- 0:25Speaker 3: That was this Monday? Just gone? Yeahday the sixteenth.
- 0:28Speaker 1: So Monday the sixteenth. I know that there is certainly
- 0:32Speaker 1: some detail that you can't give to us, But what
- 0:35Speaker 1: can you tell us at this point?
- 0:37Speaker 3: Well, I've probably got to add the word allegedly, but yeah,
- 0:40Speaker 3: you can add those ones. So there was a just
- 0:44Speaker 3: at one of the surveys, one of the local surveys.
- 0:46Speaker 3: There were some people in purchasing but some pieces. An
- 0:51Speaker 3: argument has developed and then a male has for some
- 0:55Speaker 3: reason picked up a stick and started stabbing a at
- 1:00Speaker 3: the location. Normally police would say don't become involved, look
- 1:06Speaker 3: after yourself, call Triple one and led us to it.
- 1:10Speaker 3: That would be something like if someone's stealing money, if
- 1:13Speaker 3: someone's stealing property, just let us do it. Don't put
- 1:16Speaker 3: yourself in harm's way. This time the female could have died.
- 1:20Speaker 3: It was quite she was stabbed numerous times with a
- 1:24Speaker 3: large stick. So normally we would say don't get involved,
- 1:28Speaker 3: but here today to say thank you to the people
- 1:31Speaker 3: who did get involved. They did put themselves in danger,
- 1:34Speaker 3: but it's one of those things where it was probably well.
- 1:37Speaker 3: It was a situation where they had to do it,
- 1:39Speaker 3: and they did it, and they did it well. The
- 1:41Speaker 3: person was in the act of stabbing the female and
- 1:45Speaker 3: he's been pushed and restrained by a number of people,
- 1:48Speaker 3: a couple of people who working there and just someone
- 1:50Speaker 3: who was filling up at the time. So the empty
- 1:53Speaker 3: police would just like to thank those people again. Don't
- 1:56Speaker 3: put yourself in danger. You know you're going to have to, Paul.
- 2:00Speaker 1: That is unbelievable, and as you said, we've said it
- 2:04Speaker 1: right from the get go. It's alleged this person's now
- 2:07Speaker 1: been charged though with aggravated assault and recklessly endangering serious
- 2:11Speaker 1: harm aggravated. It must have been incredibly frightening for those
- 2:17Speaker 1: bystanders who, by the sounds of it, have acted really quickly.
- 2:21Speaker 1: And like you said, you know, you always encourage people
- 2:24Speaker 1: not to get involved. But in this case, had they not,
- 2:27Speaker 1: who knows what the outcome would.
- 2:29Speaker 3: Have been, well exactly. And like I've just watched the CCTV,
- 2:34Speaker 3: I wasn't there at the time, and you know, you
- 2:36Speaker 3: can say and I say, leave it to the police.
- 2:38Speaker 3: But sometimes we may be on the other side of town.
- 2:42Speaker 3: We may take five minutes to get there, and we
- 2:43Speaker 3: may take ten. And I know people get annoyed sometimes
- 2:46Speaker 3: at the you know how long it does take to
- 2:48Speaker 3: get somewhere. They had to act, and they did. You know,
- 2:52Speaker 3: I've seen CCTV before where people just stand and look,
- 2:56Speaker 3: there was no hesitation. This time, they just got involved.
- 2:58Speaker 3: They dealt with it, and they actually restrained the person
- 3:01Speaker 3: for quite some time. And so kudos to them.
- 3:04Speaker 1: Well, I mean a big thank you by the sounds
- 3:07Speaker 1: of it, from everybody involved in this situation, to those
- 3:12Speaker 1: people who who really put themselves in danger to try
- 3:17Speaker 1: their best to help this woman.
- 3:20Speaker 3: That's great. You know, we often talk about or non police,
- 3:25Speaker 3: you know, like what can I do to defend myself?
- 3:28Speaker 3: And you know, like what's too much? You know, what's
- 3:31Speaker 3: too much force? And basically in this case, they use
- 3:34Speaker 3: just the right amount of force. You think someone stabbing
- 3:37Speaker 3: a lady in the upper torso with a stick. What
- 3:41Speaker 3: would you do. They did just the right amount. They
- 3:43Speaker 3: restrained them, They held them there, They detained them until
- 3:46Speaker 3: we got there. They didn't go overboard, they didn't get silly,
- 3:51Speaker 3: and so again, you know, thank you to them. They
- 3:52Speaker 3: did a great job. Was pretty awful to watch. It was,
- 3:57Speaker 3: and I imagine for them, like I'm looking and it's like,
- 4:00Speaker 3: oh my my goodness, you know, like they're just out
- 4:03Speaker 3: of nowhere. Imagine that happening just in front of you.
- 4:06Speaker 3: They went stunned. There was no you know, we talked
- 4:09Speaker 3: about fight or flight. Yeah, well freeze. There was no freeze.
- 4:13Speaker 3: There was no flight. They obviously it wasn't fight, but
- 4:17Speaker 3: they got stuck in and they did what they had
- 4:19Speaker 3: to do.
- 4:19Speaker 1: So unbelievable, you know, well done to those people. Was
- 4:24Speaker 1: it three people, did you say, Paul?
- 4:27Speaker 3: Three people? So, three chaps too who worked at the premise,
- 4:32Speaker 3: and one who just happened to be there. It was
- 4:34Speaker 3: three o'clock in the afternoon. You don't really, well, you
- 4:37Speaker 3: would never expect to see that kind of thing, someone
- 4:40Speaker 3: repeatedly stabbing someone just reading in front of me. The
- 4:44Speaker 3: attending officer has described it as frenzied. Looking at the CCTV,
- 4:49Speaker 3: it was. It was frenzied. Yep, no flight, no fight,
- 4:53Speaker 3: no freeze, just strength into it and they did what
- 4:54Speaker 3: they had to do.
- 4:55Speaker 1: Oh you must, I mean you must be incredibly grateful.
- 4:58Speaker 1: I know, all the police must, everybody in the community
- 5:01Speaker 1: should be incredibly grateful that we've got three blokes like
- 5:04Speaker 1: this prepared to put themselves in danger to try and
- 5:07Speaker 1: save that woman. And and well done to them on
- 5:10Speaker 1: on doing that. It would have been bloody scary.
- 5:13Speaker 3: Well imagine it would have to be honest. They probably
- 5:17Speaker 3: didn't have the time to to get scared, you know,
- 5:20Speaker 3: it just happened that quickly. But you know, again we
- 5:24Speaker 3: tell people don't get involved, look after yourself, but certain
- 5:27Speaker 3: times you can't. They couldn't, and they didn't. They got straight.
- 5:33Speaker 1: And so yeah, well thank you for coming on this
- 5:36Speaker 1: morning as well. I think that it is. Yeah, it's
- 5:39Speaker 1: so important that these that these three blokes. I hope
- 5:44Speaker 1: that they're listening this morning, and I hope that they've
- 5:45Speaker 1: heard this because I think that it goes without saying
- 5:49Speaker 1: that the whole community is grateful for what they've done.
- 5:52Speaker 3: Well, that that's you know, we talk about you know,
- 5:54Speaker 3: saving one life at the time type thing, and you
- 5:56Speaker 3: know how you do well well, I hope they realized
- 5:58Speaker 3: that the possibility is great that they saved a life
- 6:01Speaker 3: on Monday.
- 6:03Speaker 1: Paul, thank you so much for speaking with us this morning.
- 6:05Speaker 1: A big thanks for letting us know exactly what's going
- 6:09Speaker 1: on here and making those men aware of just how
- 6:12Speaker 1: important it is that they save potentially saved this woman's life.
- 6:15Speaker 3: Thank you, You're welcome.
- 6:17Speaker 2: Thanks so much, and hope you have a good weekend.
- 6:20Speaker 2: Thank you.
- 6:21Speaker 1: That is the Northern Territory Senior sergeant there, Paul Kirkby,
- 6:25Speaker 1: unbelievable stuff. And I tell you what, if those three
- 6:28Speaker 1: blokes are listening, well done to you on what you've done.
