- 0:34Hello and welcome to another installment of the Drive Thru, October 2020 edition.
- 0:38Thank you for tuning in to channel 666.
- 0:41This is Brad, your host.
- 0:42With me as always is Eric, and we've got Tanya as well.
- 0:48As you may know, the Drive Thru is our monthly recap where we've put
- 0:51together a menu of local, racing, and random car Jason videos.
- 0:55Now let's pull up to window number one for some industry news.
- 0:58First thing I'm going to talk about here is Ford says that they're
- 1:02killing off the Shelby GT350.
- 1:04It's time to say goodbye.
- 1:06They didn't really announce they were kind of forced to because
- 1:08there were some rumors going around that they were going to do this.
- 1:11But because of the GT500 that is coming out, the 760 horsepower Mustang, super
- 1:18Mustang, essentially, they are ending production now or relatively soon
- 1:23this fall on the GT350 and the 350R.
- 1:26is a very sad day for Mustang enthusiasts.
- 1:30Those cars were probably the greatest Mustangs ever made until
- 1:34people start driving the GT 500.
- 1:36I assume GT 350 ran for six years and was widely unchanged during that time.
- 1:42And it sported the flat plane crank, the Voodoo V8, 526 horsepower and
- 1:48six speed manual transmission.
- 1:50To replace this car, they are releasing a Mach one, uh, which is going to
- 1:54have similar power to the GT three 50.
- 1:57And it's also going to have the same six speed transmission from the GT three 50.
- 2:01Sad news, sad Panda over here that that car is being killed off one
- 2:05because it's such a great car.
- 2:06And, and also because anybody that was looking to secure one on the used market.
- 2:11Better do so quickly because the prices are going to skyrocket.
- 2:14And next month's headline reads, Ford says goodbye to Mustang Shelby GT500 in lieu
- 2:20of the King of the Road Cobra edition.
- 2:22Right, I mean this is just going to be a downhill battle against Chrysler.
- 2:26This is, this is what I see.
- 2:28Unfortunately, I agree with you.
- 2:29I think the 350 and the 350 R were a great compromise car, especially if you
- 2:33wanted a dual purpose track street car.
- 2:37But I've said it many times before, and people have asked
- 2:40me if you could buy a new car to do everything, what would it be?
- 2:44And I usually respond, if you told me the last car I was ever going to own
- 2:48was a Shelby 350, I'd be okay with that.
- 2:50So are we saying that there's a thing as to.
- 2:53Too much power?
- 2:55Because I thought everybody always complained you make a big power big motor
- 2:58of America and now we're complaining that all we have 700 horsepower and not 500.
- 3:04It's the Star Wars race, right?
- 3:06It's the race to a thousand, but we've already gone there.
- 3:09I mean, the demon and all those different challenger options, they're
- 3:12already there making four digit power.
- 3:14So I'd say, Like we say about Chevy being late to the party.
- 3:18I think Ford's late to the party in terms of making big power numbers compared
- 3:23to some of the other muscle cars.
- 3:24I mean, if you're looking at the numbers that even the new Corvette supposed to be
- 3:27putting out, it's like, all right, okay.
- 3:29I think as a driver's car, the three 50 was the best of everything
- 3:33to quote Jeremy Clarkson.
- 3:35I mean, yes, there was such a thing as too much power.
- 3:38He said it about, I think it was the eight 12 super fast.
- 3:42Well, he was test driving it and he just, there is such a thing as too much power.
- 3:46And if Jeremy Clarkson, you know, Mr.
- 3:48Moore power, there's too much power.
- 3:51Then yeah, it's, it's, it's a thing that can happen.
- 3:54760, how are you going to use 760 horsepower?
- 3:59On a racetrack, let alone the street.
- 4:01I mean, some race cars don't even have that much power.
- 4:04I think the, the IMSA GT cars are around the 500 to 600 range.
- 4:08I don't think they're pushing over, over 650.
- 4:11Well, they also weigh probably 1200 pounds less, if not more.
- 4:14I mean, that's probably a low ball number.
- 4:17So power to weight ratio on a, On an IMSA GT car is better than
- 4:21a street car with less power.
- 4:23But they can all, they can also use much stickier tires and suspensions
- 4:27completely different and things like that.
- 4:29But for an everyday car, you know what we're going the wrong way.
- 4:33Who are we kidding?
- 4:34No, there's, you can never have too much power.
- 4:36Screw this, but to finish out the story, the sixth generation
- 4:41Mustang has been around since 2015.
- 4:44And in that time Ford has sold over 633.
- 4:48Thousand of these cars worldwide.
- 4:52I'd say that's a success given that this is a pony car that,
- 4:55you know, until recently they haven't really sold overseas.
- 4:59It hit market and it's just, it blew up.
- 5:01It is a great car.
- 5:02Eric will wax poetic about this car all day long.
- 5:05Uh, the, the S five 50 Mustangs are excellent cars.
- 5:09The GT three 50 was the best of the best of them.
- 5:12So it is, it is sad.
- 5:13I just hope that we don't go the way of.
- 5:17Mustang 2.
- 5:18We give all the credit in the world to Iacocca and the team that developed the
- 5:21original Mustang and it was a hot cake seller as well, selling, you know, a
- 5:24million plus Mustangs at the original, but you know, the Mustang 2 was not so good.
- 5:29So let's hope that whatever comes next for the new generation of
- 5:33Mustangs is not a repeat of the past.
- 5:36So speaking of the Ferrari 812 Superfast, at some point we'll have an episode
- 5:41where we don't talk about rich people.
- 5:43And how much money they have, let me know, let me know what that is.
- 5:46That's not this episode.
- 5:49Unbeknownst to me, I didn't realize that Ferrari actually, I think for
- 5:53about the past 10 years or something will make you a custom Ferrari, one
- 5:58of a kind, if you have enough money.
- 6:01And so recently they have made a custom Ferrari based off the 812 super fast.
- 6:08And as the news release stated commissioned by a discerning European
- 6:13client, the latest offering in Ferrari's line of unique coach built one off models
- 6:18is a vibrant evocation of the values that define Ferrari in relation to GT racing,
- 6:24a car that is equally at ease on the road as it is hitting the apex on the track
- 6:29in the hands of a true gentleman driver.
- 6:33Now I will say if you Google custom Ferrari A12 super fast, I will give
- 6:39it to this discerning European client that he's got some good taste because I
- 6:43actually think he made it better looking.
- 6:45In my opinion.
- 6:47So kudos for him and his one of a kind Ferrari from the front.
- 6:50Yes.
- 6:51I like the back better.
- 6:52Really?
- 6:53I don't know.
- 6:54I'm digging it.
- 6:55I think Ferrari also did this.
- 6:57There was something bouncing around Jalopnik a year or two ago.
- 7:00Somebody had a custom one off made based on the 488.
- 7:03Very similar deal.
- 7:04They made a one off and that car was stunning as well.
- 7:07I'm all for letting rich people do rich people things with Ferraris and make
- 7:11these one offs because I think they're all beautiful, all the ones I've seen.
- 7:14I just thought the title of the article was misleading, right?
- 7:17And from Jalopnik, the clickbait was Ferrari basically
- 7:20made a prettier Dodge Viper.
- 7:22And I'm like, it looks nothing like the Viper.
- 7:24I don't even know what they're talking about.
- 7:26And they're taking a shot at a car that isn't even being made anymore.
- 7:29Yeah, exactly.
- 7:30And the Viper has its own unique style.
- 7:32Which you can recognize right away.
- 7:34All the Ferraris nowadays, in my opinion, kind of all look the same.
- 7:37Not to say that that wasn't the case like back in the 80s with the 3 Series
- 7:40Ferraris, the 308s, the 28s, the 48s, etc.
- 7:43They all look the same, but I don't know.
- 7:46At least it wasn't designed by a computer like the Senna and the
- 7:49Veneno and some of these other cars.
- 7:50Viper?
- 7:51No, I don't think so.
- 7:52Now, I haven't seen any spy photos of this alleged new Viper that's coming.
- 7:57That they've been talking about ever since Fiat took over Chrysler.
- 8:00But we'll see, you know, looking at this cat, this car more, it looks like
- 8:04the wealthy businessman was looking at the two 50 GTO when he, and he was
- 8:09inspired by that car to make this one.
- 8:11Cause it very much has similar lines to me, uh, to that car.
- 8:16The front of it looks like the F Type Jag.
- 8:18That's what I, when I first glanced, I was like, it looks like a Jag.
- 8:21So what else is going on in the industry?
- 8:22Uh, Chevrolet, you know, they just came out with a new car, the C8 Corvette.
- 8:27Well, other than not allowing me to sit in them at the dealership, they have
- 8:33issued a stop sale order on C8 Corvettes because of a brake by wire issue.
- 8:38Basically, there's possibly material contamination within the
- 8:42electronic brake boost system.
- 8:44And basically it can cause the brake boost system to not be able to
- 8:48communicate with the brake pedal, forcing you to have to apply more pressure.
- 8:52And then the system doesn't talk to each other and it just creates an issue and
- 8:55you could die in a fiery ball of, uh, it does not just affect the Corvette.
- 8:59It also affects the trailblazer, the encore, whatever that is.
- 9:03And a few different Cadillacs.
- 9:05This is the first recall that Chevrolet is issuing where you actually
- 9:08have to go back to the dealership.
- 9:10And the fix is basically to replace the brake boost module.
- 9:14So what was wrong with vacuum?
- 9:15Uh, it was too archaic.
- 9:19It stopped the cars too fast.
- 9:21Oh, okay, gotcha.
- 9:22It worked!
- 9:23Ah, that's the problem!
- 9:25That's the prob got it.
- 9:27Okay, all right.
- 9:28But we can move on.
- 9:30Thanks, Chevy.
- 9:30Yeah.
- 9:31And Chevy, I've got a little tip for you.
- 9:33Please put a 1 C8 and whatever dealerships are selling C8 Corvettes in the showroom.
- 9:39Don't have them all sold because people actually want to come and
- 9:42look at a car and touch a car and see a car and sit in a car.
- 9:46Before they buy a car.
- 9:48Well, the problem is you got to stop licking the cars, Brad.
- 9:50You know, you, you're doing it wrong.
- 9:52Brad gets hungry.
- 9:55So what else?
- 9:56He don't want to know what the car tastes like.
- 9:57So this next one or next two, maybe are probably irrelevant
- 10:03to those of us living in the.
- 10:05Wonderful United States.
- 10:06But this is BMW who is unveiling yet another front wheel drive.
- 10:11Uh oh.
- 10:12Hold on.
- 10:13Stop.
- 10:13Don't fall out of your chair.
- 10:14Yes, BMW and front wheel drive were used in the same sentence.
- 10:18And we're not talking about minis.
- 10:20On wheel drive.
- 10:21So yes, they are getting ready to release their new 128 Ti hot hatch, which will
- 10:28be front wheel drive and possibly is going to be an answer to Volkswagen's
- 10:34GTI, specifically the GTI TCR.
- 10:39That's going to be releasing only in Europe.
- 10:40And I mean, this is not too interesting.
- 10:43It's not coming to the U S so who cares?
- 10:45There's a lot of people that thou hast the blasphemed greatly.
- 10:48Oh, great Bavarians.
- 10:50Um, how dare thou make a front wheel drive?
- 10:53All I heard was grumble, grumble, grumble, grumble from all the BMW fans out there.
- 10:57I mean, it's for their compact and sub compact cars.
- 11:01So it kind of makes sense why they're doing it front wheel drive.
- 11:04Let's you have more space, the engines oriented different.
- 11:07You don't have the drive train going back to power the rear end.
- 11:10So it lets you have a little bit more space in the cockpit cabin, if you will.
- 11:15Um, so they're really doing it for those reasons to get a little bit more
- 11:18space for people inside the vehicle.
- 11:21And, you know, some other things are, well, you know, these days in modern
- 11:25times, you really can't tell the difference between front wheel drive and
- 11:27rear wheel drive, which you're going to trundle down the road and grab groceries.
- 11:32As a normal person, that's probably true enough, with all the
- 11:36nannies controlling everything.
- 11:38Granted, if you were actually going to drive spirited or on a track,
- 11:41you would still notice a difference.
- 11:43But, again, it's not coming to the US, who really cares?
- 11:46I will say, though, it's not unattractive looking.
- 11:49I think they still need to figure out their whole kidney grill proportions.
- 11:53It's not as horrific as, uh, Some of the cars we have here, but
- 11:57it's not a heinous looking car.
- 11:58I think it's a pretty nice looking lowered X3.
- 12:02I was thinking Mini Countryman and BMW X1, which are already front
- 12:06wheel drive, probably a very similar platform, much like, you know, VW has
- 12:11the MQBs and all those different You know, shared platforms that they have.
- 12:14U K L is what it's called.
- 12:17So, yeah, it only makes sense.
- 12:19And to your point, the whole reason behind front wheel drive, or like in the old
- 12:23days, a beetle or a Fiat 500 or a Hillman imp where the motor was in the back.
- 12:28Behind the people was to maximize the people space.
- 12:32So it makes total sense.
- 12:33And you're right.
- 12:34If you've ever ridden in a BMW, as great as they are, they're very cramped.
- 12:38And in the old days, especially in the heyday of the, you know, the E36s
- 12:42and the E39s, you know, you got a three series cause it was the sports
- 12:46car and you got the five series.
- 12:49Because you wanted three extra inches of legroom in the back.
- 12:52That's all you got.
- 12:53And you went from one series to the next, right?
- 12:56So I don't know.
- 12:58I think in the advent of EVs, which we'll talk about here in a little bit,
- 13:01it also makes sense to do away with a normal front engine, rear drive layout.
- 13:06It just doesn't make sense anymore for these new power plants.
- 13:10We'll see.
- 13:10We're not getting one over here.
- 13:11So BMW enthusiasts.
- 13:13It's on the state side.
- 13:15Do not panic.
- 13:16They continue to rejoice.
- 13:18Now the next one, all of probably zero people also care about this.
- 13:22However, I care about this one.
- 13:24You care about this one.
- 13:26I would be remiss not to mention news regarding the fun favorite Toyota Yaris.
- 13:34Who cannot love the little three cylinder beast that puts down 257
- 13:39horsepower and 266 foot pounds of torque.
- 13:42I mean, I would love to drive this little thing out of three cylinders.
- 13:46Yes.
- 13:47Wow.
- 13:47That's impressive.
- 13:49GR Yaris.
- 13:50Makes those kinds of numbers.
- 13:52I mean, that is insane.
- 13:54Is that because of the turbo is the size of the block?
- 13:56I was wondering that myself.
- 13:58Details, details.
- 13:59Okay.
- 14:00Let's not worry about it.
- 14:01Makes 250 horsepower at 47 pounds of boost.
- 14:04Once it does it once, but it's spectacular that one time.
- 14:11So apparently there's been some spy photos of a little Yaris running
- 14:15around the Nurburgring lately.
- 14:16And now there's all the rumor mills are going spastic about.
- 14:20Is this the GRMN?
- 14:22If you don't know what that is, that's the Gazoo Racing
- 14:25Master of Nürburgring edition.
- 14:28How exciting!
- 14:29What does that bring?
- 14:30How many more horsies and pounds of torque will we get out of three cylinders?
- 14:36I mean, if you think about it, a hundred horsepower per cylinder
- 14:40That's a hell of a ratio.
- 14:42If they could get it up above 300 in that MN version, that would be nuts.
- 14:47There was nothing indicating what, you know, any of the, the stats or
- 14:50specs are on, on this version or what this version exactly is going to be.
- 14:55But there's something coming that we will not get here once again.
- 14:59So speaking of big horsepower and big fun, a company you've probably never
- 15:04heard of until about last week, SSC, put out a car with a name that's even worse
- 15:10than the Touareg and some of these other ones that have come out in the past.
- 15:13They have the Tuatara, and I'm hoping I pronounced that correctly.
- 15:17And if I'm wrong, I'm sorry, but come up with something better.
- 15:22I shall drop knowledge now.
- 15:24And it is pronounced Tuatara.
- 15:28Sure.
- 15:29I think I like Eric's pronunciation of the twatsara.
- 15:33They are reptiles from New Zealand.
- 15:35And it means peaks on the back.
- 15:37And now that I look at the car, I totally get the name.
- 15:40There you have it, folks.
- 15:41That is the most interesting part of that entire article.
- 15:44Thank you, James May.
- 15:48It is now being touted as the fastest car in the world, with Incredible
- 15:52top speed of 331 miles an hour.
- 15:56It looks like every other super hyper car that exists.
- 15:59So in terms of fashion and style, it's pretty cookie cutter, but here's the
- 16:03one thing I take issue with this car is that yes, it just set the Guinness world
- 16:08record for fastest car in the world.
- 16:11However, I want to put a big Asterix there because the car that still
- 16:15holds the fastest production car top speed in the world is still the
- 16:19Bugatti Veyron or the Chiron, I guess.
- 16:21In this case, because the SSC is still considered a boutique manufacturer, and
- 16:27they are slated with a 2B and that's future production run of only 171
- 16:33bespoke cars, which means there's got to be 171 people signing up for their
- 16:40special edition limited production SSC.
- 16:43So I know I'm splitting hairs here.
- 16:45It is.
- 16:46Technically the fastest car in the world, but I don't know.
- 16:49I still tip my hat to Bugatti.
- 16:51I think what's sad is that the owners, all the owners of these cars, they will
- 16:57never reach five miles per hour because they are going to be put on a cart.
- 17:01And dragged around their garage.
- 17:03They're never going to run.
- 17:05They'll have like 2 miles on them.
- 17:07And it's basically just to get it off the truck that delivers it and into
- 17:10the temperature controlled garage where they will stay until they
- 17:14are flipped in about 3 or 4 years.
- 17:17For whatever the new hotness is.
- 17:19So switching to even more exciting news.
- 17:21We are set to see ink dry on paper very soon.
- 17:25The European Union has said they are going to improve a 38 billion, and that's
- 17:31with a B, merger to create the world's fourth largest automaker by finalizing the
- 17:37merger between Fiat Chrysler and Peugeot.
- 17:39Once that's all said and done here, hopefully in the next couple
- 17:43of months or so, we will finally see the birth of Stellantis, yet
- 17:47another terrible name to follow.
- 17:49Terrible names we've already mentioned on this episode, but I'm actually
- 17:52excited to see where this goes, propelling Fiat Chrysler into that
- 17:56number four spot around the world.
- 17:59Stellantis and if it's right for you, some side effects may
- 18:04include owning an Italian car.
- 18:06Fun question since Peugeot and we'll get no cars over here probably, but
- 18:11hypothetically in a different world, what Peugeot past, present, or future
- 18:17would you want to see in the U S?
- 18:19206 GTI from like the Gran Turismo days.
- 18:22The 205 T16 is the rally car.
- 18:25That's what I would go after the slightly older one, but I'm going
- 18:28to mention one here in a little bit.
- 18:29When we talk about retro cars, I'm actually a big fan of the
- 18:33Peugeot RCZ and I'll explain that.
- 18:36In a little bit.
- 18:37If anyone's asking, I would have gone with the 205 turbo or a 208.
- 18:41Well, speaking of retro cars, we found by way of Jalopnik, the missing
- 18:47link between the last of the 300 Zs and the more modern 350 Z Nissans.
- 18:54And it appears that there was a two door prototype.
- 18:57That's a combination of the 280 ZX.
- 19:00Some look and feel of the 300 ZX and some pieces borrowed over from the Sylvia.
- 19:06We placed the link for this on the show notes, so you can check it out yourself.
- 19:10Maybe leave some comments.
- 19:11Tell us what you think.
- 19:12Personally, I think it looks just like the Maserati 4200 GT
- 19:16that came out in the early 2000s.
- 19:18I agree with that.
- 19:19At first glance, I actually thought it was Italian or maybe
- 19:22the rebirth of like an Alpine.
- 19:24I can see that.
- 19:25You know, because at that time, well, this would have been in the 90s.
- 19:29So Renault still hadn't had its influence yet, but it definitely has
- 19:32some of those European cues to it.
- 19:35Confused when I look at it, quite honestly, like, I don't
- 19:37know what I'm looking at.
- 19:40And I just stare at it, good or bad.
- 19:41I haven't decided yet.
- 19:42I just, And that's the beauty of prototypes, right?
- 19:47As you kind of stare at them longingly wondering, should I, or shouldn't I?
- 19:53They decided they shouldn't.
- 19:55Absolutely.
- 19:56And probably, okay.
- 19:57Honestly.
- 19:58So moving on from that and speaking of the French, I came across an
- 20:01article from grassroots motorsports, where they did a review on the.
- 20:06Peugeot RCZ, which I mentioned a couple of minutes ago, and it was
- 20:11Peugeot's answer to the Audi TT.
- 20:13So if you look at it closely, it carries some of the same design cues.
- 20:17It's based on the 308, the slightly larger hatchback, and it showed up in 2007.
- 20:23Audi was already working on the second generation TT at that point.
- 20:27So this kind of picked up where the Mark 1 TT left off.
- 20:30Personally.
- 20:31It's odd.
- 20:32It's quirky, but I like it.
- 20:34I've seen him in person.
- 20:37If I was living in Europe, it wouldn't be my first choice.
- 20:41I've actually never seen this car before, and I think it looks pretty slick.
- 20:45Totally looks like a TT.
- 20:46Like a TT kind of competitor.
- 20:48I think it's kind of cool, but here's the impressive part.
- 20:51Here's what gets me granted.
- 20:53It's front wheel drive.
- 20:54So everybody, everybody just discounted it immediately.
- 20:56And all the BMW people turned us off 10 minutes ago.
- 21:00It's got a 1.
- 21:016 liter turbo.
- 21:03And depending on the model year, we're talking 266 horsepower and
- 21:08243 ft lbs of torque out of a 1.
- 21:126.
- 21:12Now what most people don't realize is that 1.
- 21:156 liter turbo is what eventually ended up in the Mini Coopers.
- 21:19So that's a strong bottom end that's been used in a lot of cars to include
- 21:22the SRT4 Neon and a bunch of other vehicles that use that same turbo.
- 21:26Peugeot 308 bottom end.
- 21:29It was also available as a diesel with up to about 160 horsepower and 251 pound
- 21:33feet of torque, but that gas motor, those are really, really good numbers,
- 21:38and those are still the kind of numbers we're seeing out of BMW and out of mini
- 21:42today on their smaller four cylinders.
- 21:44So as much as you can kind of take it or leave this car, I think it.
- 21:48Ushered in and it opened the door for these other companies to take advantage,
- 21:52at least of this power plant and use it for cars that a lot of us do like
- 21:56hats off to Peugeot on that one.
- 21:58Sadly, I don't think I fit.
- 22:01I stopped listening when you mentioned it needed one extra
- 22:04cylinder to get all that power.
- 22:06Nice.
- 22:08The Yaris Gazoo Racing, you know, has something to say about that.
- 22:13I want to know what it does at the Nürburgring.
- 22:15So many of you guys might not have ever heard of the B.
- 22:20A.
- 22:20T.
- 22:21Also known as the Batmobiles.
- 22:23And they're a set of Alfa Romeo concept cars.
- 22:26And they've been hidden away for many, many years now.
- 22:29private collection, and they're actually up for auction.
- 22:32And the price tag is somewhere north of 20 million dollars for all three cars,
- 22:38but a little bit of back history if you're not an Alfa Romeo enthusiast like I am.
- 22:42The BAT, which stands for Berlinetta Aerodynamica Technica, Which were
- 22:48prototypes designed to better understand the flow of air over a vehicle.
- 22:53So they're very streamlined.
- 22:54They're very futuristic looking.
- 22:56They're very much like the Batmobile from the 1960s Batman, but they
- 22:59were built in 1953 through 1955, and they're known as the bat five.
- 23:05The seven and the nine, and that's why there's three because they're actually
- 23:08three different models, although they look very close and they get
- 23:11slightly larger as every year went by.
- 23:14There's a lot of information on these cars in the article from CNN that we posted.
- 23:18You can also do a lot of research on them on the web, especially
- 23:20there's a really good blog.
- 23:21article on Wikipedia, but I also found out that there was a bat 11, which
- 23:27was designed nearly 50 years later to commemorate the original three bat cars.
- 23:33And it was built in 2008.
- 23:35And there was only one of that as well.
- 23:37So in total, there are only four bat prototypes.
- 23:40Ever built and the original three are up for sale.
- 23:44So if you got an extra 20 mil laying around, these would be really
- 23:47cool to add to your collection.
- 23:48So, uh, head on over to your local Barrett Jackson, right?
- 23:51I would like to start the bidding at 50.
- 23:55Uh, yes.
- 23:5650 and one, 50 and one.
- 23:57Do I hear 50 and two?
- 23:58And you might look at them and go, wow, they're unattractive.
- 24:02But guess what folks, they're not the ugliest vehicles ever.
- 24:06This is true.
- 24:07And we'll talk about that on another episode.
- 24:10But I got to hand it to Alpha because the coefficient of drag on those backcars
- 24:13is extremely low for that time period, unlike anything else at that time.
- 24:18So good for them.
- 24:19Again, Alpha pushing the boundaries of Italian design and engineering.
- 24:25So we talk about this all the time, not on the show, but just in general,
- 24:29talking about cars and car design, we've got a couple of members that say, That
- 24:33car design kind of died with, like, the whole aerodynamics revolution and
- 24:37trying to get the most efficient vehicles and, you know, uh, form following
- 24:42function, uh, and things like that.
- 24:44And I think they're quite stunning, actually.
- 24:46There, there's a lot of art, artistic ness in the design of these vehicles.
- 24:51And if they were aerodynamic at the time, I mean, This just
- 24:54proves that theory is wrong.
- 24:56All cars do not have to look the same to be slippery.
- 25:00So I don't know why car design changed, you know, over the years to where
- 25:04everything has to look the same.
- 25:06In an attempt to continue our thought here on what's old is new again.
- 25:10I think we're going to segue right into.
- 25:13A can of jolt cola.
- 25:21So what do you got for us, Tanya?
- 25:23Retro cars.
- 25:24Most people won't probably know a Fiat 126, but it's another one of those.
- 25:30It's very older Italian cars that a very small Italian
- 25:34person fits in very comfortably.
- 25:35Brad, unfortunately, no, you probably don't fit, but somebody decided to
- 25:41reimagine what a modern electric one, two, six would look like.
- 25:46And if you Google Fiat one, two, six electric, you'll see pictures of it.
- 25:50And I think this is a very good looking retro redesign.
- 25:54It's very reminiscent of the original, but it looks better.
- 25:58It's got the whole electrification.
- 26:00Yay for that piece, but it's cool looking.
- 26:03I've seen some comments, Oh, it just looks like the Honda E.
- 26:06No, actually, if you Google Honda E, which is their little electric
- 26:09that's coming out, this thing looks way better than the Honda E.
- 26:12Yes, they're similar in that they're both small little boxy cars,
- 26:15but it's kind of where it ends.
- 26:16I wish they'd make it put alongside the 500E that's soon to debut.
- 26:21And please put it right there with the retro Panda electric.
- 26:25Are you listening?
- 26:26Fiat Stellantis, are you listening?
- 26:28So for our Italian listeners out there, when I look at this, I see La 126, right?
- 26:33100%.
- 26:34It is a complete throwback.
- 26:36I honestly would say they should build this instead of the 500e.
- 26:41I like the way this looks.
- 26:42It's very rare anymore to see a two door coupe, especially a two door hatchback.
- 26:47You know, all these cars back then, be it, you could say on our side, the Escort.
- 26:51Or the GTI on the German side.
- 26:54I mean, they all have this very similar shape.
- 26:55The one unfortunate part is that this rendering it's, it's beige.
- 27:00I'd love to see it in another color, but it's a period appropriate color.
- 27:04And it's a color, but it's a color that the one 26.
- 27:07And, and I like it.
- 27:09I mean, I think it's cool.
- 27:10And I think we need more cars like this.
- 27:12I would love this.
- 27:14And I, and I like the Fiat 500.
- 27:16I mean, it's, it's iconic.
- 27:17It's classic, but if this existed and someone told me you have to choose
- 27:21between the two, I would definitely choose this one, but unfortunately again.
- 27:24We'll never see this.
- 27:25Moving on to more electric news.
- 27:27So besides that, we, we've got some industry news.
- 27:30We've got some Tesla news.
- 27:31We've got parts of cars falling off.
- 27:34We've got some battery fires and we've got two wheel fun for the first time.
- 27:39I don't think we've covered two wheel fun yet.
- 27:41So starting off with industry news around electric.
- 27:44So GM, similar to, uh, I believe it was last month.
- 27:48announcement from Ford with them retooling their Rouge plant for electric vehicles.
- 27:54GM is unveiling that their Detroit Hamtramck assembly plant is going
- 27:59to be reborn with a new mission to solely build electric vehicles.
- 28:04And I believe that factory was.
- 28:07Factory one or something like that.
- 28:09So they're going to call it factory zero now.
- 28:11Um, obviously that's a little bit of a play on zero emissions
- 28:15and all that good stuff.
- 28:16I thought it was patient zero.
- 28:18Whatever the factory is going to be where the new GMC Hummer.
- 28:22EV is going to be built.
- 28:24So if you heard this week, that unveiling and Brad's going to talk about it in
- 28:29a little bit, they're also going to build a couple other cars there as well.
- 28:33So the cruise origin going to be designed as part of the partnership
- 28:37between GM and Honda that they've got going on the facility itself.
- 28:40It's going to be, you know, 2.
- 28:412 billion upgrade, and it's going to be pretty cool actually, because
- 28:45they're going to put it a hundred percent renewable energy to power it.
- 28:49So it's all going to be wind and solar, and they're going to do some other.
- 28:52If you will, energy saving and environmentally friendly
- 28:56things with the construction and how it's going to operate.
- 28:59So good on them.
- 29:00And I guess we'll be seeing some Hummers pop out of that.
- 29:05The Hummer GMC has decided that they're going to make the Hummer EV.
- 29:10And holy crap, they unveiled it with a five and a half minute video, uh,
- 29:14they took a cue from Lincoln and had a nice smooth talking Matthew McConaughey
- 29:17type dictate the details and everything over space and the Hummer driving
- 29:22on the moon or Mars or the desert.
- 29:24I don't know where it was.
- 29:25There are Wait, wait, wait, wait, they didn't bring in Neil deGrasse Tyson?
- 29:28That would have been better.
- 29:29That would have been better.
- 29:31He probably turned them down.
- 29:32He was probably their first choice and they, he turned them down.
- 29:35But anyway, there were a ton of specs.
- 29:37I've got a page here full of them.
- 29:40Thousand horsepower.
- 29:41This number is kind of funny.
- 29:4211, 500 torques.
- 29:45How they come to that, it's, they use a little bit of funny math.
- 29:47They take the actual torque number multiplied by the first
- 29:50and last gear ratios to come up with like a max torque number.
- 29:54They haven't actually said what the gear ratios are.
- 29:56So to come up to what the actual torque number is.
- 29:59Zero to 60.
- 30:00The first gear is.
- 30:0110, 000 to one, right?
- 30:02So, exactly.
- 30:04Uh, it's a CVT transmission.
- 30:06Uh, zero to 60 is in three seconds because every off roader wants to
- 30:11go zero to 60 in three seconds.
- 30:12The price is 112, 595.
- 30:16Uh, it comes with 35 inch tires stock, comes with adjustable air
- 30:20ride suspension that can take the ground clearance from 10.
- 30:231 inches.
- 30:24To 15.
- 30:249 inches, it can scale at 18 inch vertical, 24 inches of standing water.
- 30:30It can wait through my truck can wait through that.
- 30:32So I don't know why that's such a big deal, but in comparison to the new
- 30:36Sasquatch Bronco, which is the top of the line, like most offer capable Bronco
- 30:41that has a ground clearance of 11.
- 30:436 inches.
- 30:44And so this, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait.
- 30:48The Sasquatch Bronco.
- 30:51Like, is that for real?
- 30:53Like, are we going to have the Bigfoot 150?
- 30:55Is that next?
- 30:56Because I'm so ready for that.
- 30:58The Bigfoot 150 exists.
- 30:59You just can't find it.
- 31:01Oh, okay.
- 31:03It's never been spotted.
- 31:05It's got four wheel steering.
- 31:06It also has a mode called crab mode.
- 31:09Which means all four wheels turn the exact same direction.
- 31:12And you can essentially just wait, what they all go forward, right?
- 31:17No, you can turn that.
- 31:19You can turn the wheel and the, all four wheels turn to a certain degree.
- 31:24Yeah.
- 31:24Crap, like a crab walks.
- 31:26Yeah.
- 31:26That's what I said.
- 31:27Crab mode.
- 31:28Crab crawl.
- 31:29Can I get a vanity plate for mine that says crab man?
- 31:31Sure.
- 31:32This could go wrong very quickly.
- 31:33Let's get off the crab thing.
- 31:36So the Hummer is a pickup truck, this edition.
- 31:39The, the edition one is a pickup truck.
- 31:41It comes with a five foot bed, which is plainly useless.
- 31:44Yeah, it's got a Ultium battery packs.
- 31:47It's a tri motor, 350 miles of range, 350 kilowatt, 800 volt charging
- 31:53up to 100 miles in 10 minutes.
- 31:55There is a package, it's called Watts of Freedom.
- 31:58The Watts of Freedom package includes, it's a launch control package.
- 32:02It primes the motor for max power.
- 32:05It lowers the ride height.
- 32:07It rumbles the seats.
- 32:09And it pumps in artificial noise through the speakers.
- 32:13You know, my Jeep does that when I do, uh, when I stand on the brake pedal
- 32:16and the accelerator at the same time, my first initial instinct or initial
- 32:21opinion of this, when I first saw it, other than the fact that, holy crap,
- 32:25it's going to be super expensive and I'll never own one or never want to.
- 32:28Uh, that it looks just like the Rivian R1T, the other electric
- 32:32truck that's coming out.
- 32:33It looks almost identical to me.
- 32:34Also, it's wider than an F 150 Raptor.
- 32:37Just saying a lot because those trucks are ginormous.
- 32:40I mean, a Hummer to me has always been something that someone with a lot of
- 32:45money is going to buy, I mean, because what they're so not useful, I mean, they
- 32:51get four miles to the gallon, right?
- 32:53The, the ice versions.
- 32:54And then my understanding is.
- 32:57A normal small svelte person barely fits inside one.
- 33:00They're cramped as all get out.
- 33:02Because all the drivetrain is tucked up into the cabin for ground clearance,
- 33:06so you can only fit four adults.
- 33:08Not well.
- 33:09I get it for the military use and all that, and they're extremely
- 33:12rugged and blah, blah, blah.
- 33:12Okay, that's a particular use case, but to go down to your local grocery?
- 33:16Yeah, but the, the mill size.
- 33:18Speck Humvee is not the same as your GM produced Hummer.
- 33:22Although they look the same.
- 33:24I understand that.
- 33:25So that's, I'm just, I'm just saying, cause people like, yes,
- 33:29there's Hummer of military and then there's the Hummer of every day.
- 33:33And if people think they're getting the military version, they're sadly mistaken.
- 33:37And the, and the Hummer that's.
- 33:38The pedestrian guts.
- 33:40If you want a GTM top tip, go pick up at a military auction, a decommissioned
- 33:44Humvee and stay away from the consumer oriented Hummer H1s that came out
- 33:50because the Humvee is going to be significantly cheaper and it's going
- 33:53to be a better vehicle for you.
- 33:54It's going to be a diesel and if you want to do some serious off roading,
- 33:57nothing can take a beating and a half.
- 33:58I just want to know in this Ludicrous mode that it has with 11 and a half
- 34:03thousand foot pounds of torque what tire they're going to put on this thing
- 34:07when I want to launch from a stoplight that won't basically Chernobyl the
- 34:11minute the launch control disengages.
- 34:14Duratrax.
- 34:16Oh, is that, okay.
- 34:17900 treadwear.
- 34:19No, and I don't want to offend anybody.
- 34:21Cause I always have thought of the Hummer as being kind of a niche thing.
- 34:25So just like any other niche car, you know what, if you got the money to
- 34:29afford it, I mean, whatever, more power to you, I mean, cool, but that's not,
- 34:33that's not the only thing GM has been lurking around in the dark, working on.
- 34:37Have they last month's talked about how they were going to Create an
- 34:42alliance with Nicola, who, you know, all hydrogen and EB and all that.
- 34:47And they're do this for semis on hydrogen and all this, this business.
- 34:51And they announced that they were going to do a big merger there.
- 34:53Um, or at least GM was going to buy in certain percentage into the company.
- 34:57And then.
- 34:57I think like, it was not even a week later, all of a sudden the
- 35:01shit started hitting the fan.
- 35:03And there were allegations against Nikola and misleading investors and bad
- 35:08characterizations of business dealings.
- 35:10And then shortly after that bomb drop, the other shoe fell and Milton stepped down as
- 35:16the CEO, and then he was accused of sexual assault and this, that, and the other.
- 35:20So then it was like, first thought was, Oh, what's going to happen now
- 35:25with this GM Nikola partnership.
- 35:28And so it looks like they're still sort of talking and it's likely
- 35:33to still happen that there's going to be some dealings going on.
- 35:36And they've got till December 3rd to reach an agreement on this 2 that's going down.
- 35:44There's really not much else to say on it.
- 35:45There hasn't been any other reporting other than GM hasn't fully walked away.
- 35:49They're still having conversations.
- 35:51Maybe it's still a good deal for them.
- 35:52I don't know.
- 35:53I almost think they kind of still need to go with through with it, especially
- 35:56since they announced the new, I agree with that vehicles that they're I'm
- 36:00sure they're counting on Nicholas technology and in part of this partnership
- 36:04to help get that off the ground.
- 36:06I mean, I feel like GM's walking around with this diamond encrusted
- 36:10dollar bill gun right now, just like, spraying money, making it rain 2Billion
- 36:15on the new plant factories here 2Billion to Nicola 2Billion over here.
- 36:19It's like.
- 36:20Good Lord.
- 36:20It's like, yeah, no wonder the Hummer is 112 grand.
- 36:23It's like, good God, but I'm hoping I'm crossing my fingers because maybe
- 36:28they've learned from the mistakes of everybody else from Ford, from Tesla,
- 36:31from Volkswagen, et cetera, and maybe they'll surprises and maybe they'll come
- 36:35out with something earth shattering.
- 36:37And that's where I'm kind of putting my faith at the moment that maybe GM will
- 36:42surprise all of us at the end of the day.
- 36:44So let's stay tuned on how that develops.
- 36:47So we would be remiss to talk electric and not talk about Tesla.
- 36:51So moving on to some Tesla news, apparently they're talking about building
- 36:56a more affordable electric vehicle that would be priced about 25, 000.
- 37:03Wait, wait, wait, so are they able to lower the price because they've
- 37:06decided to get their parts from Ace Hardware instead of Home Depot?
- 37:10They're getting military discounts at Lowe's.
- 37:16Senior citizen AARP discounts.
- 37:18Yeah, yeah.
- 37:18There's not a lot of information and to the extent that even the journalist who's
- 37:22reporting on this kind of Personally dubbed the car as the Tesla model
- 37:26two, seems like it would be something smaller than the current model three,
- 37:29helping bring the price down, et cetera.
- 37:31And the whole article was a little bit of annoying.
- 37:34Cause it was, you know, Tesla's 25, 000 electric car means
- 37:37game over for gas and oil.
- 37:39And it's like, not want.
- 37:41Uh, I love how Tesla's the only person making electric cars right now.
- 37:47You know, there's not Renault or Volkswagen or Porsche or Audi or
- 37:53Hyundai or Honda or any of those people.
- 37:55It's only Tesla.
- 37:56So only Tesla is going to be responsible for crippling the.
- 38:00Oil and gas industry.
- 38:02Let's get that right.
- 38:03I mean, it just goes on and on how it's going to be the Volkswagen
- 38:05golf killer and all this stuff.
- 38:07And it's going to go to directly compete against the ice.
- 38:10And I'm like, really?
- 38:11I mean, and if you're marking this in Europe, really?
- 38:14I mean, first of all, your competition is going to be the Renault and the
- 38:19Peugeots and the Audis and the Kias and the Hyundais and all the other things
- 38:23that are flooding into the market.
- 38:25And the Gazoo Racing Yaris, come on now!
- 38:28I mean, just wait for their electric version, it's gonna
- 38:30make like 900 horsepower with one little battery cell, okay?
- 38:34But it's like, I don't know, the whole article is slightly obnoxious.
- 38:37Yes, and?
- 38:38Great, make a more affordable electric vehicle.
- 38:40Wonderful.
- 38:42I mean it probably will be attractive in Europe where they still sort of like
- 38:47smaller cars, but I mean I don't know who would buy a Model 2 if it's going
- 38:51to be smaller than a 3 in this country.
- 38:53I don't know if it's as ugly as the Model Y that I saw on the road the other day.
- 38:57You can count me out.
- 38:58I've got two questions for you though.
- 39:00One, how many bags of mulch can it carry?
- 39:03And two, does Europe give EV credits like they do for against taxes here in the us?
- 39:10Does, do they have a program like that?
- 39:12I cannot recall.
- 39:12I'll leave it at that.
- 39:13I'm not sure.
- 39:14I'd have to look it up.
- 39:15Well, you know, we do need to circle back because I have to say, despite
- 39:19being a dinosaur, according to you guys and the listeners out there, I do
- 39:24still, I still like to burn my dinosaur blood, but I am intrigued by the idea.
- 39:31Of the E 150 that we talked about last month.
- 39:34And just after we recorded the third episode of the drive thru, Ford announced
- 39:39that they are coming out with a 430 horsepower hybrid version of the F 150.
- 39:46And apparently it's going to be able to tow up to 14, 000 pounds.
- 39:51Now, Ford, you have my attention.
- 39:53However, there's a big asterisk here.
- 39:55We talked about this on a.
- 39:57Different conversation.
- 39:59I'm a big fan of, and I wrote about this in a previous article, what I call self
- 40:03contained hybrid, where the ice motor is used basically as a generator to keep
- 40:08power going to the electric system, and I don't have to plug it in, and I don't
- 40:11have to deal with unicorn farts, and a lot of other things to power my vehicle.
- 40:15I don't have a good understanding to how this new F 150 hybrid is going
- 40:20to work, whether it's going to be a plug in and you're going to have
- 40:22some limited city range, or if it's going to be a self contained hybrid,
- 40:26similar to Ford's previous hybrids.
- 40:28If that's the case, you definitely have my attention because now you've
- 40:33got the range, you've got the backup power, you've got the ability to
- 40:36tow massive amounts, and probably you're Some really good city MPG with
- 40:42that self contained hybrid system.
- 40:44And all the articles tend to be very vague on listing out stats
- 40:46and specs and things like that.
- 40:47But it seemed like it was the hybrid, not the plugin, the self contained yeah,
- 40:53self contained not of the plugin variety.
- 40:54Furthermore, I'm extremely confused by this truck because there was one
- 40:58article that some, Folks had gotten their hands on the truck and all this stuff.
- 41:01They said there's not a single badge on it indicating that it's a hybrid, which
- 41:07the argument there was that sort of genius because you're playing to your market of
- 41:11people that, you know, want the built Ford Tough and Merca and gasoline guzzling.
- 41:16And I don't want no hybrid.
- 41:17And so.
- 41:18Don't put the hybrid badge on it.
- 41:20Confuse them a little bit.
- 41:21But then the few statistics that they gave, they talked about a 36 kilowatt
- 41:27motor and then it would run off a 1.
- 41:295 kilowatt hour battery.
- 41:33And I'm really confused what the hell that could possibly do besides
- 41:38like Transcribed by https: otter.
- 41:38ai Run your auxiliary features.
- 41:41The other thing with this truck, a lot of the things, the attributes of
- 41:44it or whatever, it comes with the 220 volt plugs and all this stuff so that
- 41:49like, it's really being marketed more as this is a truck you work with.
- 41:52So I'm going to go to my construction site and I'm going to plug in my
- 41:54drill into the back of my pickup truck and, and all this stuff.
- 41:57And it's like, well, one, chances are, you're probably not going to.
- 42:00Back your pickup truck to wherever you actually need your drill.
- 42:03So I don't know how useful that's always going to be, but partially that battery is
- 42:07there to support these auxiliary functions for, you know, these particular use cases.
- 42:12I don't see such a small battery pack being useful to you're
- 42:17suddenly on an incline towing.
- 42:19I mean, that thing ain't going to do crap.
- 42:21Maybe it's powering your radio, but that's about it.
- 42:23But I mean, it's a step in the right direction, I guess.
- 42:27Now, in order to bring this truck to market, Ford had to do some testing and
- 42:33they got creative by building what I'm going to put air quotes around is robots.
- 42:38And if you look at the article, the first adjective that came to mind was robots.
- 42:44Because I don't know if these robots were designed by the local S.
- 42:49A.
- 42:50E.
- 42:50team at, you know, at like Michigan State or something.
- 42:53But to me, it wasn't the robots I was expecting.
- 42:55You know, granted, we all have a fantasy of Johnny Cab driving around
- 42:59and, you know, testing these vehicles.
- 43:00And the reason that they were using robots.
- 43:02Quote unquote robots to test the new E one 50 and hybrid F one 50 is
- 43:06that they're putting them in through conditions that no human would be able
- 43:09to, they say, quote unquote, survive.
- 43:12I think that's a big exaggeration, but I think the funny part of it was when
- 43:15you looked at how it was really cobbled together, it's cool that they're doing
- 43:19it and they're, they're doing a lot of this stuff remote, but it was just
- 43:22so janky and I think my favorite part.
- 43:26Was the ring gear that they attached to the steering wheel was zip ties.
- 43:30I mean, I just found myself chuckling at this going, we got 2 billion
- 43:35to spend on whatever, and this is the best you came up with in terms
- 43:39of robots for testing vehicles.
- 43:41It looks like something we've done.
- 43:42Yeah.
- 43:43Right.
- 43:44Zip ties in use.
- 43:45There's a, there's a warning label on the side of the door.
- 43:48Now I know where all the surplus stuff from RadioShack ended up.
- 43:51Robots come in all shapes and sizes.
- 43:53Okay.
- 43:53Yes.
- 43:54Maybe.
- 43:55They're taking a page from Tesla's playbook and buying all
- 43:58their supplies from Home Depot.
- 44:00We can build robots at Home Depot now, so we're all good.
- 44:03No, these all came from Radio Shack and Toys R Us.
- 44:06These are erector sets and little battery packs and stuff.
- 44:11Speaking of Tesla.
- 44:13And they're renowned build quality, just kidding.
- 44:17I mean, but seriously, I mean, it's common knowledge Tesla people themselves will
- 44:21admit that there are quality control, fit and finish issues with Tesla vehicles.
- 44:27We've got two more that are popping up.
- 44:29First is the Model Ys.
- 44:31At least one.
- 44:32And I believe there was at least more than one person to have the moon roof
- 44:37disappear while driving on the highway.
- 44:40So apparently you can be driving along the highway and your model Y and suddenly
- 44:44you can have a convertible Y for free.
- 44:48There was no upcharge for this folks.
- 44:50Part of the base package.
- 44:52Eric, there's your E prepared car right there.
- 44:54I know.
- 44:55What was that roof being held on by?
- 44:56Elmer's glue instead of superglue.
- 45:02It was held on by caulk.
- 45:04She's the wrong kind of pair.
- 45:06Yeah.
- 45:06Uh, you know, I don't, I don't, I hate to be mean.
- 45:10To them, but no, do it.
- 45:13Go for it.
- 45:13I mean, it happened to someone.
- 45:16So there you go, people.
- 45:17I like this next one better though.
- 45:19So on a model three, cause I like spending tons of money on a car
- 45:24to have pieces fall off while I'm driving when I didn't do anything.
- 45:28Okay.
- 45:29That's what I look for when I go car shopping.
- 45:31Don't know about the rest of you.
- 45:32So apparently the model threes, and this is A two year old problem that's
- 45:37finally being acknowledged by Tesla is, you know, you're driving around,
- 45:43you know, it's, it's a rainy day, you know, Oh gosh, you're out there.
- 45:47And then suddenly you're for your bumpers on the ground.
- 45:51And you wonder making my bumper fall off because of rain,
- 45:54the damn things melting off.
- 45:55No, no.
- 45:56From what I can gather based on pictures and everything is Basically,
- 46:00the whole rear bumper is one bumper fascia plus skid plate all built in.
- 46:05So apparently what's happening is road debris, sand, dirt, mud, water, because
- 46:11it's raining, because this only seems to happen when there's puddles and things
- 46:14like that, collects in the skid plate, and then eventually the weight is too
- 46:20much to bear, and the bumper falls off.
- 46:22falls off the car.
- 46:24I, I think they're going about this wrong.
- 46:27I think they, they meant to advertise it as a hydrogen electric car and
- 46:31that's just a water collector.
- 46:35Oh, that collects the water and there's a conversion.
- 46:38And then they have a, they have Home Depot parts in the trunk that convert it.
- 46:42And then use the hydrogen.
- 46:44They separate the hydrogen and oxygen.
- 46:45No, no, no.
- 46:47You don't understand.
- 46:48It is a water collector for the evaporative cooling system so
- 46:52that you can cool the batteries down by spraying water on them.
- 46:55And as it evaporates off it, it dissipates all that heat.
- 46:58We use it for inner coolers.
- 47:00It work.
- 47:00It's fantastic.
- 47:02Oh gosh.
- 47:03Can you imagine you're driving down the road or whatever and your
- 47:06bumper falls off 'cause it's crazy.
- 47:08I can honestly say that has never happened to any of the vehicles I've ever owned.
- 47:11What I wanna know is.
- 47:13And not that I've ever seen a Tesla in the snow, but does that bumper act as
- 47:17a plow when you're Well, now that's a, that's a great question now, actually.
- 47:20So apparently they have since fixed the issue with diffusers
- 47:26and, and other shields and this, that, and the other things.
- 47:29I don't know.
- 47:30They probably drilled some holes in the bottom of it.
- 47:31So drains because that would be, that would be more on par with the type of
- 47:39fixes that normally get reported on.
- 47:42At any rate, hopefully this doesn't happen in the future.
- 47:44The snow one's a probably really good question.
- 47:47I don't know, but watch out if you've got a model three or a model Y.
- 47:51So moving on from Tesla again, apologies, not to bash on them too hard, but you
- 47:56know, sometimes when you make it easy, so there was another article from friends
- 48:00at clean technica, their report on all EV stuff and things of that nature.
- 48:04They had a headline battery fires may slow the EV revolution.
- 48:08And I find their.
- 48:10Title a bit harsh, particularly they're pointing the finger right now at Ford
- 48:14and GM and Hyundai, who are all seeing issues with batteries and batteries
- 48:19overheating and then catching fire.
- 48:21You forgot a company to add to that list.
- 48:23Samsung had an issue with that too.
- 48:27And yes, that's very bad.
- 48:29And they need to address that.
- 48:30And they need to figure out, you know, the root causes and
- 48:32mitigate them and all that stuff.
- 48:33But.
- 48:34Also, let us not forget our friends Tesla, who also suffered some battery
- 48:39fire issues early on, and they have seemingly since addressed most of them.
- 48:45I mean, they seem to maybe still happen less frequently.
- 48:48I think the title's too critical.
- 48:49I don't think just because The technology and the evolution of that technology
- 48:54is suffering setbacks right now.
- 48:55It means that it's never going to work out in the future.
- 48:58They're already evolving battery technology.
- 49:01It's a known fact right now that lithium ion batteries are slightly dangerous in
- 49:07that they have an overheating tendency.
- 49:09And when they overheat, it leads to thermal runaway,
- 49:12which can then lead to a fire.
- 49:14These are known facts.
- 49:15And what are all the batteries?
- 49:16Kind of being used right now, lithium ion, because they're very powerful.
- 49:19They're, they're lighter weight, this, that, and the other.
- 49:21Evolution is already taking place.
- 49:23There's lithium iron phosphate batteries, sort of the same technology, the same
- 49:27kind of in the same family tree, if you will, of the lithium ion batteries.
- 49:31But the chemistry is such that generate less heat.
- 49:35While still generating pretty much the same amount of power.
- 49:37And so Tesla's actually talking about already shifting over to the lithium
- 49:41iron phosphate batteries, because they're inherently safer because
- 49:44they don't have this tendency for thermal runaway and to cause fires.
- 49:47Don't paint this doom and gloom prophecy here that Ford GM
- 49:51and Hyundai and everybody else are never going to get there.
- 49:54off and running with batteries because they're going to catch fire.
- 49:57No, what are they going to do?
- 49:58They're also going to move to lithium iron phosphate batteries because
- 50:02the manufacturers of these cells and whatnot are going to shift to that.
- 50:05I mean, at the end of the day, it's kind of growing pains.
- 50:08Are the different battery I guess components are the lithium iron
- 50:12phosphate batteries as efficient?
- 50:14Are they as powerful and as efficient have the same performance as lithium ion?
- 50:18Seemingly, yes, based on my very limited research, but your
- 50:22deep understanding of chemistry.
- 50:23So we'll give you that.
- 50:26Let's not.
- 50:27All right.
- 50:28So moving on from that.
- 50:29So we haven't talked about motorcycles very much or at all, and apparently
- 50:35there is a Texas startup that is going to be building an electric
- 50:39motorcycle called the Vulcon Grunt.
- 50:43All right, let's, let's stop there.
- 50:44Cause the names are getting really, really good these days.
- 50:49I don't make the names up.
- 50:50I just read the names.
- 50:53So let me get this right.
- 50:54The Vulcon Grunt.
- 50:56Not Volcan.
- 50:58Volcan.
- 50:59And not Voltron.
- 51:00Not Voltron.
- 51:02Volcan Volcan.
- 51:03And not gr Grunt.
- 51:05Exactly.
- 51:07Now you're with us here.
- 51:08All right.
- 51:08Brought to you by the letters . So the Volcan Grunt is gonna be a
- 51:13super affordable EV motorcycle.
- 51:15It's gonna be priced at just under $6,000.
- 51:18So $5,995, and it's gonna be ready allegedly in Spring 2021.
- 51:25The motorcycle's gonna have.
- 51:2650 horsepower, 75 foot pounds of torque and a 60 mile an hour top
- 51:30speed and a hundred mile range.
- 51:32Now I just heard everybody keel over going, what the heck?
- 51:35My understanding is I don't think this is at all intended to be a street legal bike.
- 51:41So I don't know much about bicycles, but there were some comments
- 51:44talking about how this bike is very similar looking to a Rokon.
- 51:48And even similarly named, I guess.
- 51:50So for people, motorcycle enthusiasts and, and kind of off
- 51:54roading vehicle enthusiasts, you might know what, what that is.
- 51:58So the intent is, this is more of a hobbyist or worker bike.
- 52:02So if you had, you know, your, I guess it makes sense in Texas, you're on
- 52:05your ranch and you want to get from one side to the other, you hop on your
- 52:09little electric bike and you scoot across the ranch, or maybe you're
- 52:13going to go out hunting or something.
- 52:14And this is your bike.
- 52:16Does it, it's, it's basically a electric dirt bike.
- 52:20I mean, if you think about it from that perspective, I can see the, the appeal.
- 52:24I can see the use.
- 52:25I can see sneaking up on wild animals much more easily because you don't
- 52:29have the going on where, you know, you can hear them from half a mile away.
- 52:33So I kind of liked the idea.
- 52:35I could see this being very popular in Asian countries, like, especially
- 52:38like Vietnam and places like that, where motorcycles are extremely popular
- 52:42and they have a lot of bikes that.
- 52:44over here we would consider not street legal.
- 52:47I could see something like this working out really, really well.
- 52:50I'm really shocked by the numbers though, because when you tell me,
- 52:54you know, a hundred miles of range and 60 mile an hour, I'm thinking
- 52:57moped on steroids, not motorcycle.
- 53:00So, I mean, neither here nor there, but you know, I'm still holding
- 53:03out for the Tron light cycles.
- 53:05So when those become available, please sign me up.
- 53:08And apparently this company too, they're also, they're
- 53:10going to be doing electric ATV.
- 53:11So they're very focused on this off roading hobbyist, not street
- 53:15legal running down the highway.
- 53:16So if you're in the market for anything, uh, look out for the Volcon Grunt.
- 53:20At your local grunt dealer, head on down.
- 53:23Also staying with the motorcycle theme.
- 53:24So I don't know if anyone's aware, the actor Ewan McGregor of various fames,
- 53:30most notably, I guess, Obi Wan Kenobi.
- 53:32From Star Wars, he embarked on a 9, 000 mile electric motorcycle ride, starting
- 53:40from basically the Southern most tip of Argentina, all the way up through
- 53:44South America, ending in Los Angeles.
- 53:46And he did this with a buddy of his and he was on a Harley Davidson live wire,
- 53:51which is Harley Davidson's electric bike.
- 53:53We're poo pooing just a second ago, very lightly poo pooing on the
- 53:57hundred mile range of the Vulcan.
- 53:58Well, the Harvey Davidson.
- 54:00Livewire has 146 mile range.
- 54:02So it's really not that much greater.
- 54:05So they were doing this as part of, um, some sort of TV series that he's,
- 54:10he's going to, he recorded all this whole journey for, so I think he's.
- 54:15I believe I recall him kind of being a bit of a motorcycle
- 54:17buff and even a car enthusiast.
- 54:20This isn't the first time he's done this.
- 54:22He actually did this in the early 2000s, I think on BMW motorcycles.
- 54:26He went all the way around the world.
- 54:27Yeah.
- 54:28So it'd be interesting to kind of see, obviously he's doing it this
- 54:31time, probably with the whole electric take, not a lot of details out.
- 54:34Cause they don't want to see.
- 54:35Things for the TV series, which is going to be coming out and apparently
- 54:38it's going to be on Apple TV for anyone who would be interested in this.
- 54:41They had support vehicles with them as well, which were allegedly
- 54:44Rivian R1T electric trucks.
- 54:46So that's pretty interesting.
- 54:48It sounds like it was a heck of a adventure.
- 54:50Obviously it goes without saying that there's probably not a lot of charging
- 54:54stations along the West coast of South America as you come up and whatnot.
- 55:00So.
- 55:00There were a couple of mentions about how they had to rely on the kindness
- 55:04of strangers, literally stopping at strangers doors and asking to plug into
- 55:07their, you know, electric outlets and then causing blackouts and stuff as they
- 55:12blew fuses in the, in the fuse panel.
- 55:15So I bet it's probably going to be a pretty interesting TV series.
- 55:18But nonetheless, they did travel that whole distance on electric motorcycles.
- 55:24It reminds me of the days of sailing ships.
- 55:27You needed to cross the Atlantic.
- 55:29It took six months.
- 55:30Now we can do it in two days, you know, or whatever.
- 55:34Yeah.
- 55:34I mean, he did do this in three months, apparently.
- 55:36So, and, and I don't think that was nonstop driving.
- 55:39I believe they, they stopped in different locations, probably tried to get culture
- 55:43and see different sites and whatnot.
- 55:45Granted.
- 55:46Obviously wait, you know, several hours to recharge.
- 55:49It's a really cool idea, but I think in some ways it adds fuel to that fire about
- 55:53electric and range and all that, which we won't get into in this particular episode.
- 55:58But, you know, I, I think it's interesting.
- 56:00I commend him for doing this.
- 56:01And then as Brad said, he did this.
- 56:03About 10 plus years ago, I actually didn't realize until time you
- 56:08shared this article that Harley was building an electric motorcycle.
- 56:12I mean, we have many people in GTM that are into motorcycles.
- 56:16I'm not one of them.
- 56:17So I thought this was actually Really interesting and I'm looking
- 56:21forward to seeing, you know, maybe what Harley does next.
- 56:23Maybe if they could double that mileage, you know, get it close to 300.
- 56:27You've got something.
- 56:28I think the live wire is kind of cool.
- 56:31It's been out for a little while, but it's way too expensive.
- 56:33Just like any Harley Davidson motorcycle.
- 56:35They just cost way too much.
- 56:37And it kind of reminded me a little bit of a sportster.
- 56:40I mean, it's not like everybody's regular Harley where, you know, you
- 56:43saddlebags and the whole kind of thing.
- 56:45He needed something for those off road conditions.
- 56:47So I like the fact that it was a little bit more racy, but I couldn't
- 56:52see your average Harley buyer going out and getting that because it's not.
- 56:56It's not the type of market that we have here.
- 56:58Now I, I'm probably doing a gross generalization, but the Harleys that
- 57:03I see out our way, most of them are, are the larger, you know, cruiser bikes
- 57:08rather than something like a sportster.
- 57:10Harley's trying to get away from their previous market
- 57:13because they're going under.
- 57:15So they're trying to find a way to capture a new audience and new.
- 57:19Buyers.
- 57:20And I think the live wire was a way they could have done it,
- 57:23but it's just way too exciting.
- 57:25It's like 25, 30, 000 for a motorcycle.
- 57:28Uh, millennials aren't going to pay that.
- 57:30They don't pay that for cars.
- 57:31They're not going to pay that for a Harley Davidson motorcycle.
- 57:33Um, but I do like the idea and to talk about the range a little bit.
- 57:37I mean, I've had a couple of motorcycles in my life and none of
- 57:39them got over 150 miles to a tank.
- 57:43I mean, it's got a four gallon gas tank and you know, they
- 57:45don't go very far anyway.
- 57:47So 146 miles range.
- 57:49On a motorcycle is actually pretty good as an aside, actually with Harley
- 57:54Davidson, I saw something earlier today.
- 57:56Actually, that apparently they're branching out into bicycles and
- 58:01they're actually going to be coming out with an electric bicycle line
- 58:04by Harley Davidson, which I can't imagine what that would cost.
- 58:08Look for those around your, your local track paddock.
- 58:10Yeah, there you go.
- 58:12All right, I think it's time for us to make some donuts and
- 58:16scoot into motorsport news.
- 58:19So first of all, we got to tip our hats yet again to our friends over at HPDE
- 58:24Junkie for always Providing us with the latest up to date information about all
- 58:28the track events going on in our area.
- 58:30Their list is extremely comprehensive.
- 58:32Always make sure to check it out.
- 58:34So the season is wrapping up here.
- 58:36We, Brad and I just recently released our fall finale episode from BIR.
- 58:41Unfortunately, Governor Cuomo had decided to start closing borders
- 58:45again and disallowing certain States from coming to New York.
- 58:49So we weren't able to really finish out the year like we wanted to at Watkins
- 58:52Glen with our friends from the Northeast.
- 58:54I'm happy to hear that a lot of people had.
- 58:55last weekend.
- 58:58But you know, there's really only a few events left in our area on the calendar.
- 59:04There's about three events left at New Jersey Motorsports Park.
- 59:07You've got a handful of events left at Summit Point.
- 59:10And that's to include helmets off to heroes, which is a charity
- 59:14event, which has been taken over by SCCA in the last couple of years,
- 59:18benefiting military veterans, etc.
- 59:21Usually held on Veterans Day this year happens to be held on November the 8th.
- 59:25So if you're You're looking to come out and have a good
- 59:27time, volunteer, et cetera.
- 59:29We also need coaches for that event.
- 59:31Look to either WDCR's website or Motorsport Reg for that listing.
- 59:36HPDE Junkie has a good number of events still left on the calendar for VIR.
- 59:41By my count, we have about six to seven VIR before they
- 59:47close the gates for the winter.
- 59:49So you're looking to make that trek for that.
- 59:51From the DC area, check out what HPD Junkie has on the calendar.
- 59:56And if you're somewhere else, remember that their schedule is
- 1:00:00nationwide and soon to include Canada.
- 1:00:03A little word of advice.
- 1:00:04If you're going to VIR, leave the slicks at home because the days start
- 1:00:09out typically in the thirties or forties around this time of year, and
- 1:00:12they don't typically go above 50, 55.
- 1:00:15Well, some exciting news for us.
- 1:00:17for 2021.
- 1:00:19There was an announcement through grassroots motorsports that Porsche is
- 1:00:23set to debut a North American Carrera cup.
- 1:00:26Now, a lot of the Porsche enthusiasts out there might be saying, well,
- 1:00:29this isn't really news to anybody.
- 1:00:31You know, we have all our GT cars and GT twos and GT threes and GT GT three blah,
- 1:00:36blah, blah, blah, and all this stuff.
- 1:00:37However, if you look at the history of cup racing, In North America,
- 1:00:42there hasn't been a fully sanctioned Carrera Cup since the days of the 993.
- 1:00:48And I'm actually really excited about this because I'm getting really
- 1:00:52tired of watching Ferrari Challenge and Lamborghini Super Trofeo.
- 1:00:56Seeing a Porsche Cup race for the first time in, let's call it, 20 years.
- 1:01:01Is pretty exciting.
- 1:01:03So I'm looking forward to this.
- 1:01:04I'm looking forward to seeing the final schedule.
- 1:01:06Obviously they're going to be coming to tracks like VIR,
- 1:01:09like Watkins, Glenn, et cetera.
- 1:01:11And so it's going to be exciting to see that kind of racing along with, you know,
- 1:01:15the featured races on an IMSA weekend.
- 1:01:17So good on Porsche.
- 1:01:19Sticking with racing news, NASCAR has added a couple races to the
- 1:01:23season next year for the Cup Series.
- 1:01:25Both of them at Bristol Motor Speedway.
- 1:01:28One of them in September during the playoff section of the season
- 1:01:32will be on the concrete track.
- 1:01:35But the most notable one is the race in March.
- 1:01:37March 28th at Bristol is going to be a dirt track race.
- 1:01:41So they brought in Tons and tons of dirt cover the track.
- 1:01:45Uh, and it's going to be the first time that NASCAR has run
- 1:01:48a dirt track race in 50 years.
- 1:01:51It's going back to the, uh, I guess the old days where NASCAR got its roots of
- 1:01:55the, the bootleggers running up and down the mountains, the last cup series race
- 1:01:59on a dirt track was September 30th, 1970.
- 1:02:02That was won by Richard Petty.
- 1:02:04Uh, so that's kind of interesting.
- 1:02:06Uh, two races at Bristol, one on the dirt, one on the concrete.
- 1:02:09It'd be interesting to see that the difference in lap times.
- 1:02:11The, and just the, the, the carnage that happens from a dirt track.
- 1:02:14I'm pretty excited about it.
- 1:02:15I'm not a NASCAR fan, but between adding the rovals, the, the half oval half
- 1:02:20road course tracks and adding something like this, they're definitely trying
- 1:02:23to appeal to a different audience.
- 1:02:25Uh, and I'm actually interested in tuning in next year to see what happens.
- 1:02:30Yeah, this definitely has my attention because nothing screams
- 1:02:34awesome like NASCAR's on dirt.
- 1:02:36Right.
- 1:02:38Kind of a dovetail to this.
- 1:02:39Recently, Mountain Man Dan introduced me to a show on the new
- 1:02:43streaming service, Peacock, and it's hosted by Dale Earnhardt Jr.,
- 1:02:47and it's called Lost Speedways.
- 1:02:49And the first episode is kind of an interesting episode.
- 1:02:52It's a touching episode, and he talks about, you know, his dad and
- 1:02:55his grandfather and stuff like that.
- 1:02:56But, uh, It highlights NASCARs on dirt down in North Carolina.
- 1:03:02And so I found it an interesting tie back into this particular article.
- 1:03:06So if you want to learn a little bit more about what Brad's talking about, why
- 1:03:09that ended, how they switched to asphalt, all that, I would definitely tell you
- 1:03:12to check out Lost Speedways on Peacock.
- 1:03:14It's worth a watch and it's available on the free side of the service.
- 1:03:18So you can tune in today, you know, whenever you like.
- 1:03:20Tanya, do we have your attention now for NASCAR?
- 1:03:23Actually, yes.
- 1:03:23I would say we have her attention.
- 1:03:25when they announced that NASCAR's going to COTA next year.
- 1:03:29Wow, that's She speaks with everybody, look at that.
- 1:03:33I'm just thinking about the S, like the Yeah, okay.
- 1:03:39Yes, I will watch that.
- 1:03:40Man, that hairpin at the end.
- 1:03:42Woo!
- 1:03:43If you think that's interesting, they've also said that they're going
- 1:03:46to do Watkins Glen with the boot, they're going to go to Road America,
- 1:03:49and potentially run the Indianapolis Road Circuit, the former F1 GP track.
- 1:03:54Are they planning to do any suspension modifications?
- 1:03:57Nah, nah, nah.
- 1:03:59Oxcart with slicks.
- 1:04:00We're done.
- 1:04:00I want to see NASCARs at Long Beach.
- 1:04:04And I want to see NASCARs at Laguna Seca.
- 1:04:07So basically, we're going full body IndyCars now.
- 1:04:10Is that what we're doing here?
- 1:04:12I mean, why not?
- 1:04:15Yeah.
- 1:04:16So, so IndyCars are running nothing but ovals and now the
- 1:04:18NASCARs are doing the road courses.
- 1:04:20Is that, is that what's happened here?
- 1:04:21If they can do super trucks at Long Beach, they can do NASCARs anywhere.
- 1:04:25But it just feels like Freaky Friday.
- 1:04:27You know, there's a lot of guys out there and some of our, our guys included, like
- 1:04:31Sam, who had, you know, as we talked about on the last episode was up at Road
- 1:04:34America doing the runoffs, et cetera.
- 1:04:37There are lots of guys that have budding.
- 1:04:40SCCA careers.
- 1:04:41But where do you go from there?
- 1:04:43Right?
- 1:04:43Unless you're 12 years old and super karting champion and this and that,
- 1:04:47and you've got somebody bankrolling you in the United States, maybe into
- 1:04:51something like NASCAR or stock car racing, et cetera, and working your way up.
- 1:04:54It's really hard to move out of some of these amateur and pro am racing series.
- 1:05:00Recently through an article through Racer, IMSA and SCCA are collaborating
- 1:05:05on how to cultivate more drivers coming out of SCCA to go into IMSA.
- 1:05:12So I'm really excited to see where this goes, and I think that's going
- 1:05:16to open a lot of opportunities for some very talented drivers
- 1:05:19in SCCA all around the country.
- 1:05:22To maybe have the opportunity to get away from formula enterprise and
- 1:05:26go into, you know, LMP cars or go into GT or whatever it might be, or
- 1:05:31some of these, you know, spec racer, Miata guys that are super awesome.
- 1:05:34They get the chance to, you know, drive in GTE or whatever it might be.
- 1:05:38So I'm really excited to see where this goes.
- 1:05:40And hopefully maybe we get some more American drivers.
- 1:05:43into these international series, which has been very difficult to do.
- 1:05:47I mean, I don't know all the facts like the guys from the International Motor
- 1:05:50Racing Research Center do about who won what and when we'll talk about them more
- 1:05:54in a minute, but I have a feeling like the last American that ran and won on
- 1:05:59the big stage was like Mario Andretti.
- 1:06:01You know, we're talking like 40 years ago.
- 1:06:03And so again, it'll be really cool to see where this goes.
- 1:06:06Now sticking with racing, Chevrolet.
- 1:06:09Has logged 80, 000 miles using 3d printed parts.
- 1:06:14Now, before you get all crazy, they weren't using like 3d printed pistons or
- 1:06:19any cylinder heads or anything like that.
- 1:06:21It's more of like the, the stuff you would expect, like the, the one
- 1:06:24piece items that you would expect.
- 1:06:25Um, but they use them in all their race cars in the car that runs an EMSA.
- 1:06:31In their IndyCars, the Silverado race trucks and the NASCAR
- 1:06:34Camaro that they've been using.
- 1:06:36I think that's kind of cool.
- 1:06:37I know 3d printing right now is expensive, but as the technology,
- 1:06:41you know, advances and it becomes more, I guess, readily available
- 1:06:44and more people are able to do it.
- 1:06:46It means you can print new parts trackside.
- 1:06:49Uh, if you've got the materials, it's very interesting to me,
- 1:06:52I think it's kind of cool.
- 1:06:54And in Formula One news, uh, some of you who may have been under a
- 1:06:58rock did not hear, Lewis Hamilton both caught and surpassed Michael
- 1:07:03Schumacher for most F1 wins in history.
- 1:07:06He recorded his 91st win at the Eiffel Grand Prix about a week ago.
- 1:07:11After that, Mick Schumacher, who's Michael's son, gifted him the Schumacher's
- 1:07:16helmet from the Final 2012 season.
- 1:07:20Uh, and then this past weekend, uh, he got the 92nd win and
- 1:07:24now he sits alone at the top.
- 1:07:28Eric, wake up.
- 1:07:30Oh, man.
- 1:07:30Yeah.
- 1:07:31Oh, were you talking about formula one again?
- 1:07:34Holy cow.
- 1:07:35But you know, it's an interesting question because Lewis Hamilton is
- 1:07:38still fairly young and he's still extremely dominant in that Mercedes car.
- 1:07:42Who cares?
- 1:07:43Who cares?
- 1:07:44I'm so tired of it.
- 1:07:45I watch Formula One.
- 1:07:46I think it's interesting.
- 1:07:47It is so boring.
- 1:07:49Oh my God.
- 1:07:50It's like a book report when I was in school.
- 1:07:52You watch the beginning, you watch the end, whatever happened in the
- 1:07:54middle is completely irrelevant.
- 1:07:56It is so boring.
- 1:07:58You're not going to watch the third Italian Grand Prix this weekend
- 1:08:01because they're at Imola this weekend.
- 1:08:03They've already done Mugello and Monza.
- 1:08:05I could care less, dude.
- 1:08:06There's so much more interesting racing.
- 1:08:07I'm On TV right now between IndyCar, TCR racing, IMSA, WRC.
- 1:08:15I mean, Formula One is kind of, it's just played out.
- 1:08:18I mean, that's my personal opinion.
- 1:08:19I know there's a lot of F1 fans out there.
- 1:08:21I stopped after Schumacher retired.
- 1:08:23And ever since then, I feel like I'm just watching WWE.
- 1:08:28Right.
- 1:08:28It's so much drama, so much BS.
- 1:08:30It's all super political.
- 1:08:33I don't know.
- 1:08:34Carry on.
- 1:08:34That's all I'm going to say.
- 1:08:36Why don't you tell us how you really feel?
- 1:08:38I'll go back to sleep.
- 1:08:40What's funny is that you mentioned that you were watching it back
- 1:08:42when Schumacher was dominant.
- 1:08:44How is this any different?
- 1:08:45It's like, it's still the same kind of racing.
- 1:08:48It's not, it's not really different.
- 1:08:50It's because back then they were still driving the cars.
- 1:08:53They were still mixed engines.
- 1:08:55They were still mixed technologies.
- 1:08:57There was still a lot of advancement.
- 1:09:00Now the cars are all the same other than the liveries.
- 1:09:03They literally all look the same to me.
- 1:09:05There really is no characteristic differences.
- 1:09:08The drivers are all like super young.
- 1:09:10They're all, in my opinion, they don't have the same.
- 1:09:14I don't want to use the word maturity because I see the stuff on Instagram.
- 1:09:18I see how all these guys act with each other, and it's funny for a minute,
- 1:09:22but they're not of the same caliber as a Fit Aldi or a Sena, or a Schumacher
- 1:09:28or a Stewart or a Hill, or a Graham or a Grabba or all these names.
- 1:09:33You're gonna look back and you're like, wow, Lando is a clown.
- 1:09:36And Ricardo.
- 1:09:36Yeah, he was a nice.
- 1:09:37guy.
- 1:09:38Nobody liked Hamilton, right?
- 1:09:39And I'm exaggerating a little bit here.
- 1:09:41It's different.
- 1:09:42And they've curated these characters and these personas around the
- 1:09:45drivers that don't need to be there.
- 1:09:47And so for me, it's ruined formula one, because it's no
- 1:09:50longer about the technology.
- 1:09:52It's no longer about pushing the boundaries.
- 1:09:54It's like this whole.
- 1:09:55Bread and circus thing.
- 1:09:57And I wanted to go back to the days where it was like Senate versus prost.
- 1:10:01Right.
- 1:10:01And it was, it was just different.
- 1:10:03And maybe I'm showing my age, but there's a reason I guess it's the golden era of
- 1:10:07F1, the modern era, et cetera, et cetera.
- 1:10:10Right.
- 1:10:10So I do agree with you that the Persona of the drivers has changed.
- 1:10:15It seems like there's a lot of immaturity bouncing around.
- 1:10:18You don't have any more of the James Hunt, like Playboys out there, you
- 1:10:21know, which was really cool back then.
- 1:10:23I guess it fit the era in which he drove nowadays, I guess, with
- 1:10:28millennials growing up and liking stuff like this, it's, you know, the
- 1:10:31persona of the driver is different.
- 1:10:33I agree with you that the personas back then were.
- 1:10:35Cooler and this is more fun, I guess, but there are people you look up to that
- 1:10:40you're they were your motor sports heroes.
- 1:10:42Nowadays.
- 1:10:43I have a hard time.
- 1:10:44I mean, and maybe it's because I'm on the other end of the pendulum, right?
- 1:10:47I mean, I'm looking at a driver.
- 1:10:48Who's let's call it 20 years.
- 1:10:50My junior.
- 1:10:51How do we how do you look?
- 1:10:53Up to them, you know what I mean?
- 1:10:55I guess maybe my kids will look up to them as a hero.
- 1:10:57I don't know.
- 1:10:58It's for me.
- 1:10:58It's just hard to relate anymore.
- 1:11:00I totally, I can, I can see that.
- 1:11:02And I understand your point.
- 1:11:04So anyway, we'll move on from formula one on a whole different plane of racing.
- 1:11:08The true, true pioneers.
- 1:11:11The true bat shit crazies, the motorcycle racers in a class of their own.
- 1:11:18So I came across a, an article that was mentioning Valentino Rossi and my dad
- 1:11:24used to watch all the super bike, the MotoGP, all the different racing classes.
- 1:11:29And, you know, so it was back in the day when we had VCR and we had
- 1:11:34TVs where you had to leave the TV on to be able to record on the VCR.
- 1:11:38Right.
- 1:11:39And so like, You know, countless, whether it was F1 at, you know, back
- 1:11:43then or, or motorcycle races or IMSA or whatever, there was always something
- 1:11:48being recorded on the TV and, you know, I'm trying to study on a weekend
- 1:11:51and well, there goes Valentino.
- 1:11:52So I happened to actually catch a lot of motorcycle races, um, long time ago.
- 1:11:57And even F1 races for that matter, don't really watch any anymore.
- 1:12:00Um, so anyway, I always like to kind of follow and see what Mr.
- 1:12:03Valentino's doing.
- 1:12:05Cause he's pretty much.
- 1:12:06Considered the greatest of all time in motorcycle racing.
- 1:12:09He's still active.
- 1:12:10He's I think 40 or 41 years old.
- 1:12:13So he's getting up there compared to the younger crowd that's coming in.
- 1:12:16And now he's a nine time world champion for people who don't know who he is.
- 1:12:21Seven of those championships are in the premier class, which is considered
- 1:12:25MotoGP, and then he's got one each in some lower CC, um, classes that he competed
- 1:12:30in when he was first starting out.
- 1:12:32So his record has not been broken yet.
- 1:12:35He there's actually, Mark Marquez is on, I guess, the cusp of.
- 1:12:39Tying him for MotoGP wins.
- 1:12:42He's sitting at six right now.
- 1:12:43He's not going to get it this year because Marquez basically shut
- 1:12:46himself down for the whole season.
- 1:12:48He broke his arm in the first race of the season.
- 1:12:50So he's been out.
- 1:12:50So he's not even on the points board.
- 1:12:52So we'll have to wait, I guess, till next year to see if he's able to tie Rossi.
- 1:12:55But the article that, that I came across was, uh, another former.
- 1:12:59Rival and racer Casey Stoner, who has since retired.
- 1:13:03Um, he's only with two world championships, but he, he made this
- 1:13:07comment about it's sad seeing Rossi celebrating top five victories now.
- 1:13:12And, and the article kind of went on that, you know, and it's true.
- 1:13:15I mean, he's no longer always winning.
- 1:13:17You know, number one position, et cetera, et cetera.
- 1:13:19He's, he's kind of mixing it a little bit.
- 1:13:21He, he does still get podiums, but he's often now back kind
- 1:13:24of in the top five and whatnot.
- 1:13:26But, and I guess he was being a little bit of critical of that and, you
- 1:13:29know, Oh, maybe it's time to retire.
- 1:13:30And then at the same time, you know, well, if Rossi is still out there
- 1:13:34enjoying it and having fun, it's up to him and rightfully so it is up to him.
- 1:13:38You know, I mean, he's.
- 1:13:39He's proved himself over and over again, he's just out there having a good time
- 1:13:43still, and he's still competitive.
- 1:13:45He's mixing up the field, more power to him, go for as long as he can.
- 1:13:48I mean, eventually you have a 41 year old or an increasingly older 40 year
- 1:13:53old competing against 20 somethings and they're at their prime, their
- 1:13:57reflexes and everything are there.
- 1:13:59And unfortunately, no matter who you are, those start to, to wane a
- 1:14:02little bit in your age and your, in your perspective has changed too,
- 1:14:06maybe he's not as aggressive anymore.
- 1:14:07Maybe he realized.
- 1:14:08Well, I don't need to do that last minute, late break, amazing pass in the last
- 1:14:13two turns to, you know, win the race.
- 1:14:15Maybe he decides it's just not worth it anymore.
- 1:14:17You know, whatever his reasons may be, but he is still out there.
- 1:14:20And interestingly, I don't know if many people know he actually is also.
- 1:14:25A little bit of a rally driver.
- 1:14:26And he's a seven time winner in the Monza rally.
- 1:14:31And he's actually set to race again in that rally that's coming up.
- 1:14:34So we'll see if he makes it in a eight time winner in that whole
- 1:14:37little, little championship they do.
- 1:14:39He's also competed in Britain, WRC, as well as one of the
- 1:14:43rally, New Zealand races.
- 1:14:45I love Valentino Rossi.
- 1:14:47I've been following him for years.
- 1:14:48I think he's amazing.
- 1:14:49And yes, he is the greatest of all time.
- 1:14:50In my opinion, on the formula one side, someone who's less Not quite
- 1:14:54as successful, um, but still kind of in a very similar situation.
- 1:14:58Kimi Raikkonen, I mean, he's still out there doing it.
- 1:15:00He's still mixing it up.
- 1:15:01I mean, this last weekend he went from 17th place.
- 1:15:04I think it was up to 10th place.
- 1:15:06And then obviously he fell back because of the car and just, he's, he's just
- 1:15:09out there having fun at this point.
- 1:15:10But yeah, I agree.
- 1:15:12If they're still having fun and they're still competitive enough to
- 1:15:15be mixing it up in the top, you know, five, 10 or 15 or whatever, why not?
- 1:15:19If people still want to give them money, throw money at them to get out there.
- 1:15:23And if people like their names, people like Rossi, I started
- 1:15:26watching MotoGP because of Rossi.
- 1:15:28I enjoy watching F1 partially because of Kimi.
- 1:15:31Why not?
- 1:15:32Hopefully they bring in more fans.
- 1:15:34I guess.
- 1:15:34I mean, I, I would, you know, kind of this whole conversation, we're talking
- 1:15:37about two drivers or pilot and a driver rather that have dominated for years.
- 1:15:43You know, you throw a Schumacher into that mix as well.
- 1:15:46And I kind of wonder though, why not, let's say, do your time and
- 1:15:50move on to another discipline.
- 1:15:51Right.
- 1:15:52And I'm not saying do something extreme, like, like Mika Hakkinen did
- 1:15:55where when he retired from formula one, he went to rally and he was
- 1:15:57terrible, but, you know, why not?
- 1:16:01You know, Hamilton, like you've already proven your point.
- 1:16:04Go do Lamont's like Alonzo did.
- 1:16:06Like I have more respect for Alonzo because he's gone and done other things.
- 1:16:10He's done Indy.
- 1:16:11He's done formula one.
- 1:16:12He's done IMSA.
- 1:16:13He's done Lamont's he's done all these other things.
- 1:16:15And so when I look at him, he's a more well rounded driver.
- 1:16:19And for me, those are the kinds of drivers that I'm more apt and more inclined
- 1:16:23to follow than, you know, the people that we were talking about earlier.
- 1:16:26And so, and you see that with.
- 1:16:28Other drivers that didn't make it like, um, who was it?
- 1:16:31Olivier pennies.
- 1:16:32He ended up being a touring car driver.
- 1:16:33He was extremely successful in touring car.
- 1:16:36He wasn't very good at formula one net.
- 1:16:38Then again, he wasn't on one of the better teams either.
- 1:16:41So there's some of that going on, but again, it's like kind of mix it up.
- 1:16:44You know, let's follow you to another discipline.
- 1:16:46Let's look at something else.
- 1:16:47There's more than just one way.
- 1:16:49Of racing.
- 1:16:50And, and, and this goes back even to that story of, uh, was it back
- 1:16:54when Montoya and Jeff Gordon swapped places, did that trading places day.
- 1:17:00And Jeff Gordon came up through carding.
- 1:17:02He got in the formula card.
- 1:17:03He's like, oh man, this is like the old days.
- 1:17:04This is amazing.
- 1:17:05And Montoya, he struggled with the NASCAR, but then eventually
- 1:17:08Montoya ended up in NASCAR.
- 1:17:10But it was good to see them cross the boundaries and try something different
- 1:17:14and not be completely typecast because the question is, yeah, so Hamilton
- 1:17:18just broke Schumacher's record.
- 1:17:19Where does he go from here?
- 1:17:21And does it really matter?
- 1:17:22Fun fact for formula one, the person you just spoke about
- 1:17:25Fernando Alonso, he's coming back.
- 1:17:27He will be in a Renault, I believe next year.
- 1:17:30All right, then let's see what's going on.
- 1:17:32He's come full circle.
- 1:17:33I think he's still trying to run Indy though.
- 1:17:35Cause he still wants that motorsports triple crown.
- 1:17:38Yeah.
- 1:17:38Which is super rare.
- 1:17:39And again, That is, you know, unless you're a Jim Clark, a Mario Andretti
- 1:17:44type, you know, AJ Foyt, those types of guys, there's very few names on that list.
- 1:17:49So to be on that list, I mean, that to me means more than I'm the nine
- 1:17:53time formula one champion, big deal.
- 1:17:56I will say in defense of Rossi, and it's probably more due to the nature
- 1:18:00of motorcycle racing is I wouldn't say that every race he was in, he
- 1:18:05was pretty Number one, and then the whole race went and he was always
- 1:18:09in the number one position, right?
- 1:18:10There was a lot of races where he was battling.
- 1:18:13He fell back in position.
- 1:18:14He came back remarkably, you know, forward in positions or it was lit or tons of
- 1:18:19races were literally, and maybe it was part of his awesomeness that he did
- 1:18:22it on purpose where, I mean, there was countless races where it's the last lap.
- 1:18:27He's not in first place, but he's somehow by miracle in the last lap.
- 1:18:32Four turns before the finish line pulls out, you know, this impressive
- 1:18:36pass from God knows where wins it.
- 1:18:38And a little bit as I don't know, is that just, he was that good at that time and
- 1:18:42could do those things and maybe held back a little bit or either that, or there's
- 1:18:46just the nature of motorcycle racing, there's just a lot more back and forth.
- 1:18:49So it's a little bit more interesting.
- 1:18:51It's, it's not, Oh, well, Rossi was in first place from lap one till, you
- 1:18:54know, the end of the, end of the road.
- 1:18:56I mean, the, the same.
- 1:18:57The same is true of Senna and some of the other great drivers.
- 1:19:00They didn't win every race they were in.
- 1:19:01And that's the part I have a problem with, with the current formula one,
- 1:19:05you know, everybody gets excited.
- 1:19:06Oh, well, Botas is at the top and so and so is on the pole.
- 1:19:09And then it's like three laps in and Hamilton's at the front.
- 1:19:12And then you're like, all right, it's time to turn TV off.
- 1:19:14Cause you know how that's going to end, right?
- 1:19:16So it does get boring if the same guy's always in the lead.
- 1:19:19And so again, in the old days.
- 1:19:21I think there was more competition.
- 1:19:23There was more discrepancy.
- 1:19:25There's more uniqueness between the cars.
- 1:19:27They weren't just cookie cutter.
- 1:19:28And that led to better competition.
- 1:19:30And I'd like to see that return in many of the sports.
- 1:19:33And to your point of drivers doing other disciplines, Jimmy Johnson from NASCAR
- 1:19:39will be running an IndyCar next year.
- 1:19:41Interesting.
- 1:19:42Someone to watch.
- 1:19:43We'll have to check that out.
- 1:19:44So now I think it's time to switch to our fan favorite section of the drive thru.
- 1:19:50A section we call Would you like some fries with that?
- 1:19:54Where we've scoured the world looking for the best in car adjacent news.
- 1:19:58So what's first?
- 1:19:59Best, but it's always interesting.
- 1:20:03So what's on the docket this month, Tanya?
- 1:20:06Well, the first one is this probably very little known Nissan 300 ZX
- 1:20:13turbo commercial that unless you were watching the super bowl back in 1990,
- 1:20:18you probably missed this little gem because that was the first and the last
- 1:20:22time that commercial was ever shown.
- 1:20:25And it's not because it was terrible commercial.
- 1:20:29It's.
- 1:20:29Very bizarre, um, and maybe fit in with 1990.
- 1:20:35I don't know.
- 1:20:36I mean, it's, it's this guy in his 300 ZX turbo and he's dreaming.
- 1:20:42And for some unknown reason, he's on some random deserted desert road and
- 1:20:46he's being chased by a motorcycle and then some bizarre looking prototype
- 1:20:51and then a plane, and then the plane is trying to catch him, but as he says,
- 1:20:57Just as they're about to catch me, the twin turbos kick in and he like
- 1:21:05skyrockets off some ramp or some crap like this, like off the hill in the road.
- 1:21:10I mean, it's bizarre.
- 1:21:12It makes zero sense.
- 1:21:13It was very dystopian, Mad Max ish.
- 1:21:16The reason why it was never, ever showed again is apparently the insurance
- 1:21:19Institute got very upset because apparently it was glorifying stuff.
- 1:21:24Speeding and it's like, really, have you seen a car movie
- 1:21:29or any other car commercial?
- 1:21:32No, it just exemplified everything that Ridley Scott put his hands on.
- 1:21:37If you've watched Aliens, if you've watched Blade Runner, what you described,
- 1:21:41dystopian, makes no sense, the whole thing, that is, you've summarized
- 1:21:46everything he's ever put his hands on.
- 1:21:47So, to me, when I saw this, I wasn't shocked, but I was I was in awe of
- 1:21:55what I had seen though, so I recommend people definitely check it out.
- 1:21:58What they didn't show at the end of that video is after the
- 1:22:01twin turbos kick in, the motor blows up and he stops at a crawl.
- 1:22:10It did remind me of the gentleman that jumped the bridge in Detroit last
- 1:22:14month as he came off of that ramp.
- 1:22:16I think all four tires were blown out and that motor was on the ground.
- 1:22:20Send it!
- 1:22:20100%.
- 1:22:22300 ZX were destroyed in the making of that commercial.
- 1:22:24But anyway, not enough.
- 1:22:27So another interesting little piece of news for three people that probably care.
- 1:22:32The Tesla roadster that's out there in orbit somewhere is
- 1:22:36close to Mars and moving on.
- 1:22:38No, just kidding.
- 1:22:39I don't know who really cares about this.
- 1:22:41I guess it's a fun fact.
- 1:22:42It's traveled 1.
- 1:22:433 billion.
- 1:22:45Miles since it was launched and it's approximately 37 million
- 1:22:49miles away from the planet earth.
- 1:22:51So it's going to be a very long time before it's ever
- 1:22:54back, sort of close to earth.
- 1:22:56And even then you won't be able to see it with, you know, high power
- 1:22:59telescope or anything like that.
- 1:23:01And it did this on a single charge.
- 1:23:03Oh, just because you can.
- 1:23:08It doesn't mean you should.
- 1:23:10I still don't understand the point of the whole thing, but hey,
- 1:23:12it's out there being space junk.
- 1:23:14So, moving on.
- 1:23:15Does the bumper fall off when it collects moisture in space?
- 1:23:19Is there moisture in space?
- 1:23:21Dun dun dun!
- 1:23:23Sticking with the theme, just because you can, doesn't mean you should.
- 1:23:26We've got a public service announcement for you and anyone that goes to
- 1:23:30a car festival or a car show or a hot rod weekend at the beach.
- 1:23:34You know, like H2O and Ocean City.
- 1:23:37Don't be like this Dumfries, Virginia driver and shut down the Bay Bridge
- 1:23:41so you can do burnouts and donuts and all kinds of illegal activity.
- 1:23:45in the middle of the day, you know, for, for the gram, don't do that
- 1:23:50crap because you will get caught.
- 1:23:51You will get in trouble and you could get seriously hurt if you do it.
- 1:23:54So please don't be like this fool.
- 1:23:56It's just not worth it.
- 1:23:57So you remember last month when we talked about the DIY turbo kit on the Audi RS3?
- 1:24:04Do we remember how that ended?
- 1:24:05I especially remember the My feet ain't gonna do shit quote.
- 1:24:10I think Johnny Cash wrote a song about it, right?
- 1:24:13Yeah burning blaze fire Exactly.
- 1:24:17So speaking of burning blazes of fire in car shows We had a yet another entry
- 1:24:23come across our desk where you get to watch a twin turbo diesel pickup
- 1:24:28truck explode on the dyno as it's making 3, 000 horsepower Horsepower.
- 1:24:33It is epic.
- 1:24:35It is something to behold.
- 1:24:37An example of another perfect DIY scenario that ends in a huge flaming dumpster fire.
- 1:24:43I mean, it's been a while since I watched that video, but I mean,
- 1:24:46that could have been catastrophic.
- 1:24:47I mean, parts were flying.
- 1:24:49Correct.
- 1:24:50Like people could have died.
- 1:24:52I mean, that was insane.
- 1:24:53It is epic.
- 1:24:54So if you are a diesel owner, always remember to watch your EGTs.
- 1:24:59Follow up update from the story we had last month about the
- 1:25:02stranded Jeep in California.
- 1:25:04You know, someone really intelligent at Ford decided to reach out to this Jeep
- 1:25:08owner and ask if he needed some help.
- 1:25:09Someone at Ford, you know, reached out, sent the guy an email, and
- 1:25:13the guy confirmed that he was contacted by Ford, and they were
- 1:25:16going to rescue the Jeep for him.
- 1:25:17He did not take them up on their offer, and instead his Jeep was recovered.
- 1:25:22By a huge group of jeepers and people would pick up trucks and even in
- 1:25:25helicopter came out to get in on the fun So ford tried it was a great publicity
- 1:25:30stunt had they been able to do it But unfortunately the owner of the jeep
- 1:25:34did not take him up on it Well, I heard they he turned him down because they
- 1:25:37offered to pull him out with a bronco And he would have been too embarrassed
- 1:25:40that allegedly they were talking about pulling him out with a Bronco, but I'm,
- 1:25:45I'm sure for probably would have sent some big tractor or something to go
- 1:25:49out there and get them or whatever it would have been great for a photo op.
- 1:25:52It would have been excellent advertising had they been able to do it, but I
- 1:25:55guess they just, it wasn't in the cards.
- 1:25:56Regardless, someone give that man or woman at Ford a raise.
- 1:26:00Yes.
- 1:26:01Agreed.
- 1:26:01Brilliant.
- 1:26:02Was it good?
- 1:26:03Hey, but was it going to be the Sasquatch edition?
- 1:26:05That's what I want to know.
- 1:26:06So last month we talked about our crazy Northern neighbor who thought it was all
- 1:26:12right to, you know, recline the seat.
- 1:26:15And your Tesla, stick that sucker in autopilot and just
- 1:26:18cruise on down the road.
- 1:26:20Well, there was a headline about watching a clip of a Tesla Model 3 failing
- 1:26:24an automatic emergency brake test.
- 1:26:26That is hilarious.
- 1:26:27And so it caught my attention, of course, from our friends at Jalopnik.
- 1:26:30And so I clicked into it and it's really.
- 1:26:31It's a little bit of clickbait, if you will, cause the whole
- 1:26:34self driving automatic braking is not a Tesla unique thing.
- 1:26:39It's across a lot of different manufacturers are trying to
- 1:26:41roll out this technology.
- 1:26:42Tesla really likes to beat their drum on it and claim a little bit
- 1:26:46falsely about how autonomous their quote self driving is when the, the
- 1:26:51fact of the matter is nobody has.
- 1:26:53100 percent autonomous self driving vehicles right now.
- 1:26:56The technology is not robust enough yet.
- 1:26:58And so obviously all these manufacturers have to do tests and whatnot.
- 1:27:03And speaking of robots, they use dummies.
- 1:27:06They got rails in the ground and they got a little dummy that like shoots
- 1:27:08across and then there's a car coming and the car with these automatic
- 1:27:12break features is supposed to stop.
- 1:27:13Right.
- 1:27:14But no, it doesn't.
- 1:27:14I mean, it's funny, poor dummy, you know, obliterates the dummy.
- 1:27:19It looked like 10 pin bowling.
- 1:27:20I mean, it was like everywhere.
- 1:27:23I mean, and, and not to beat on Tesla because there was another clip
- 1:27:27or, or screenshot of a Honda and it obliterated the dummy as well.
- 1:27:31So, I mean, it's not, again, it's not a Tesla only problem.
- 1:27:34It's a technology ready problem.
- 1:27:37However, if I had been in the car.
- 1:27:40In that same situation, I would have stopped way earlier than what the
- 1:27:44automatic braking system did because I have eyes and a brain or, you know,
- 1:27:48I don't know, maybe they're just programmed with a smaller tolerance.
- 1:27:52I personally wouldn't stop within inches of a human being.
- 1:27:56Especially if I can see them, like I would have already
- 1:27:58been slowing down and stopped.
- 1:27:59If you're paying attention while driving and that's what you should
- 1:28:02be doing, you know, there's no reason to panic stop when you see a
- 1:28:05pedestrian crossing in front of you.
- 1:28:07So I've got a philosophical question for you.
- 1:28:09What do you think is easier, an easier problem to solve?
- 1:28:13Teaching these cars to stop for these obstructions using the
- 1:28:17LIDAR and the radar and whatever.
- 1:28:19Or teaching these morons not to walk out into the street in front of a moving car.
- 1:28:24Which one do you think is easier?
- 1:28:26That is a very difficult question.
- 1:28:28I mean, it goes back to the whole joke about Astronauts in space
- 1:28:33and writing instruments, right?
- 1:28:34We spent a gajillion dollars to design a pen that worked in zero gravity
- 1:28:39and the Russians took pencils, right?
- 1:28:41It's the same simplicity principle.
- 1:28:43So, yeah, I agree.
- 1:28:44We need to spend more time teaching people a how to drive.
- 1:28:48better and be to be more aware and get off their phones and whatever, as they're
- 1:28:53walking around and kids are kids, right?
- 1:28:55Kids are hard being a parent.
- 1:28:57They're, they're, they're rambunctious.
- 1:28:59They are not aware they, they think they're alone in their own little
- 1:29:02world, in their own little bubble.
- 1:29:04So you have to be extra vigilant and extra careful.
- 1:29:05But as adults, you don't know to look both ways.
- 1:29:09I don't know.
- 1:29:09There's a lot to be said there, right?
- 1:29:11You shouldn't be driving.
- 1:29:13You should be walking, you mean.
- 1:29:14Yeah.
- 1:29:15But speaking of people that don't look ahead while they're driving.
- 1:29:18In Kentucky, Kentucky man or woman, we don't really know, decides to
- 1:29:23try and run over a nine foot tall snowman during a recent snowstorm.
- 1:29:27And what do you think happened?
- 1:29:29Who won?
- 1:29:30Frosty or the driver?
- 1:29:33I'm going to tell you Frosty won because Frosty had a secret weapon.
- 1:29:37He had wood.
- 1:29:38He was built over a tree stump in the middle of this guy's yard.
- 1:29:42And I don't know what happened.
- 1:29:44No, they never caught the, uh, the person affected by the instant karma.
- 1:29:48Um, but apparently this guy did not like this snowman and decided to try to
- 1:29:53take it out with the pick them up truck.
- 1:29:55And he lost like, did he leave the truck there damaged the truck?
- 1:30:01No, the owner of the property.
- 1:30:03built the snowman in the morning, I guess, or the night before, and then went back
- 1:30:07after work, you know, the next night and there was the tree trunk was exposed.
- 1:30:12Frosty was still standing there and there were truck marks or
- 1:30:15tire marks leading up to Frosty.
- 1:30:17Wow.
- 1:30:18So we would be remiss again, not having a Florida man to comment on.
- 1:30:24Oh boy.
- 1:30:25And of course a headline like Florida man makes scooter with
- 1:30:29mop bucket and leaf blower.
- 1:30:35I mean, it very well might be clickbait, but you have to click on it.
- 1:30:39Right.
- 1:30:40And so I did Harley take note.
- 1:30:42Okay.
- 1:30:43So first of all, I want to say that leaf blower.
- 1:30:47is forced induction.
- 1:30:49All right.
- 1:30:51That is some turbo charged action right there.
- 1:30:54Well, I didn't look, is it a Ryobi?
- 1:30:56Is it a Ryobi 18 volt?
- 1:30:57No, this, this is, this is horrible.
- 1:30:59Like video, there's a video to watch.
- 1:31:03And I mean, definitely watch the video, but this whole
- 1:31:06thing is absurd and it's just.
- 1:31:07fake.
- 1:31:08I mean, a hundred percent.
- 1:31:09What a publicity stunt.
- 1:31:11Let's be real.
- 1:31:11There's so many things wrong.
- 1:31:13Why this isn't going to work.
- 1:31:14I mean, the still images are freaking ridiculous if you look at them.
- 1:31:18And again, the video, I definitely recommend it, but let's walk through it.
- 1:31:23First of all, the video starts and we're talking like the yellow
- 1:31:27janitorial mop bucket, right?
- 1:31:29We've all seen them on caster wheels.
- 1:31:32Okay.
- 1:31:33The video starts.
- 1:31:34The man takes his mop bucket and he dumps the water out from it.
- 1:31:38Then suddenly though, the mop bucket, the caster wheels are gone.
- 1:31:41And it's sitting on a skateboard.
- 1:31:43Okay.
- 1:31:45Next, the magic of Hollywood, but it gets better because next he's holding
- 1:31:49the leaf blower, which appears turbo charger, which appears to me to
- 1:31:54be a plug in electric type blower.
- 1:31:58Okay?
- 1:31:59Okay, it wasn't gas powered, it wasn't battery, it was no Ryobi, okay?
- 1:32:04He pull starts it, and you have sound effects as if
- 1:32:07there's a gas engine running.
- 1:32:09N n nothing started when he, whenever he pulled, okay?
- 1:32:13Now, the umbrella.
- 1:32:15He's holding an umbrella out.
- 1:32:17In front of him.
- 1:32:18Unless this is a NASA developed umbrella.
- 1:32:21Have y'all ever used an umbrella in the wind?
- 1:32:24It takes approximately 2.
- 1:32:250 seconds for it to flip the other way when there's a little bit of wind.
- 1:32:31So how the hell is he, if the leaf blower was even running,
- 1:32:35how is the umbrella even stable?
- 1:32:37I call bullshit.
- 1:32:39I think we found a new form of racing here.
- 1:32:42And, and maybe, but, and then this just.
- 1:32:46Cheap, like, Walmart brand looking electric plug in blower that's
- 1:32:51operating off magic right now, because it's not plugged into anything.
- 1:32:56How the hell do you expect it to propel a 200 pound some odd man or something
- 1:33:01across The road when you can barely sometimes push grass clippings in your
- 1:33:06yard with the leaf blower, but yet he propelled himself with the leaf blower
- 1:33:11that's not plugged in with the umbrella.
- 1:33:13Florida, you don't need to make the stuff up.
- 1:33:15It dirty comes naturally . But thank you nonetheless.
- 1:33:19I mean, it was, it's amusing.
- 1:33:20I mean, watch it.
- 1:33:21I mean, I'm dying.
- 1:33:22Every time I look at this.
- 1:33:24It just gets worse and worse and worse.
- 1:33:28Stop poking holes.
- 1:33:30I mean, the still pictures, you're like, okay.
- 1:33:32And then you watch the little, the video and you're like, yeah, okay.
- 1:33:35I mean, great job.
- 1:33:37Fun video.
- 1:33:38I'm sure people were staring at you.
- 1:33:40Florida man does Florida man things.
- 1:33:42Exactly.
- 1:33:43Well, let's talk about Michigan men because they're a special breed, too.
- 1:33:47I've got to say move over Toyota Hilux because the terrorists of the
- 1:33:51world have a new preferred vehicle.
- 1:33:54It is the PT Cruiser.
- 1:33:56There's a video out there posted on Jalopnik on October 19th of a
- 1:34:00group of terrorists in Michigan.
- 1:34:02They're called the Wolverine Watchmen and they were Developing a plan to
- 1:34:07kidnap the governor of Michigan, I guess they have differing political views
- 1:34:12and they thought the best way to handle it was instead of getting out there
- 1:34:14and vote, they would get out there and kidnap and their vehicle of choice.
- 1:34:18Was a PT cruiser.
- 1:34:20The video is actually quite interesting.
- 1:34:22These men are getting out, I guess they're doing some sort of military
- 1:34:25drill where they drive up and they stop the BT cruiser, they get out
- 1:34:29of all four doors and they just start shooting into somewhere.
- 1:34:32I don't know where they're just wasting ammo for the sake of wasting ammo,
- 1:34:35but yeah, so Toyota Hilux is no longer the preferred vehicle of terrorists.
- 1:34:39It's the PT cruiser.
- 1:34:42Wonder if that Kentucky man had a differing political view with Snowman.
- 1:34:46Let's go back down South to Florida for a hot second, Florida, man,
- 1:34:50and woman quote, obviously racing.
- 1:34:53So it was reported that two people were traveling at high rates
- 1:34:57of speed in and out of traffic and trying to pass each other.
- 1:35:00Now I'm going to ask gentlemen, let's have some guesses here.
- 1:35:03No, we don't know what the woman was driving or the man was driving,
- 1:35:06but what two cars do you think?
- 1:35:09We're involved in this obviously racing scenario.
- 1:35:13Oh, one of them has to be a 1999 Dodge Caravan.
- 1:35:20I am thinking a Pontiac Sunfire with one headlight and a dent in the passenger
- 1:35:26door and then a Dodge Intrepid.
- 1:35:30No, no, it's going to be, it's going to be a, it's going to be
- 1:35:34a late 90s, early 2000s Corolla.
- 1:35:37Automatic.
- 1:35:38And I'm thinking they're obviously racing on the highway and an HHR,
- 1:35:45just because I want it to be an HHR.
- 1:35:47I actually think it's a Cadillac Cimarron and a Cadillac Cimarron.
- 1:35:55You found the last two in existence.
- 1:35:58Back racer Cimarron.
- 1:35:59Now, do you think that Cimarron can get over a hundred miles an hour?
- 1:36:02Doubtful.
- 1:36:03A hundred kilometers per hour.
- 1:36:06So they were traveling in speeds of excess of a hundred miles an hour.
- 1:36:10Apparently, I think you will be surprised with the two cars based on
- 1:36:13your guesses that were dead wrong.
- 1:36:16It was in fact, a Yugo, a 1991 Eagle Talon.
- 1:36:24What?
- 1:36:25At 108 miles an hour and a 2013 Subaru Impreza at 117 miles an hour.
- 1:36:33You know what?
- 1:36:34Mad props to the Eagle Talon.
- 1:36:36That's all I'm gonna say.
- 1:36:38For still running.
- 1:36:42That's the true gem of this story was the Eagle Talon.
- 1:36:45100 percent because the 117 is not impressive with the Subaru.
- 1:36:49That's actually pretty sad.
- 1:36:50But that Eagle, that's good stuff right there.
- 1:36:53Especially for early 90s.
- 1:36:54Which person was driving which?
- 1:36:56We don't know, they didn't say.
- 1:36:57I think the woman was driving the Talon.
- 1:36:59I'm with you on that.
- 1:37:01I don't know why, but I am.
- 1:37:04So, so we'll round out the last two with a little bit lighter,
- 1:37:08less serious and fun things.
- 1:37:10So I learned very recently that apparently Shaq, Mr.
- 1:37:14Shaquille O'Neal, is going to be executive producer and star in an animated
- 1:37:21comedy for kids called Shaq's Garage.
- 1:37:24So I really didn't know that apparently Shaq must be a bit of a car enthusiast.
- 1:37:29So, so interesting to him.
- 1:37:31The show follows the secret adventures of the NBA legends collection of
- 1:37:35animated cars and trucks, all of which have unique abilities from
- 1:37:39super spying to language, to music.
- 1:37:41The lead vehicle is named Big Diesel and will be voiced by Shaq.
- 1:37:46Through comedy and adventure, the show will showcase strong and
- 1:37:49diverse characters as positive role models with purposeful storytelling.
- 1:37:53This is going to be a special show that touches every button, music,
- 1:37:57adventure, humor, and positive, prideful messaging for kids.
- 1:38:01That's kind of nice.
- 1:38:02And from the animation, it actually looks very much like Cars, the cartoon movie.
- 1:38:06So, I mean, it's nice to, to see something that it's fun and positive messaging in
- 1:38:11the world, especially for little kids.
- 1:38:12I hope he's successful with that endeavor.
- 1:38:14So to Shaq's credit, I actually wrote about him in an article right after,
- 1:38:20uh, season two of Car Masters came out, the Rust to Riches, uh, series.
- 1:38:25And they talked about a kit car known as the Vader, which
- 1:38:29is built on a G35 Infinity.
- 1:38:32Shaq happens to own one of those.
- 1:38:34So, and I actually have a picture of him in his Vader in that article.
- 1:38:38So I think he is a bit of a car guy.
- 1:38:40Obviously that's a specialty car, it's obviously a kit car, but
- 1:38:44I would be very curious to know what else is in Shaq's garage.
- 1:38:47So kind of cool to know that he is a bit of a petrolhead.
- 1:38:50Did they say where this show is going to be, I guess, broadcast?
- 1:38:54Cartoon channel.
- 1:38:56Cartoon with a K.
- 1:38:57I mean, I'd check it out.
- 1:38:58It sounds fun to me.
- 1:38:59But let's talk about real fun because we are getting
- 1:39:02Dangerously close to Halloween.
- 1:39:04Yes, we are.
- 1:39:04We are at time of this recording fast approaching the witching hour,
- 1:39:09otherwise known as Halloween in 2020 has been quite the year so far.
- 1:39:13And unfortunately I think threatens typical Halloween trick or treating and
- 1:39:17other activities all across the country.
- 1:39:19If you recall, a few months ago, we reported on a drive through Halloween
- 1:39:23experience that was coming to.
- 1:39:26Florida.
- 1:39:27Oh yeah.
- 1:39:27And folks, it is here and it's still running through November 7th.
- 1:39:33So if you find yourself in or are from the Orlando area, you know, go check this out.
- 1:39:38It seems like it's probably going to be a pretty cool thing.
- 1:39:41Just wanna give a shout out to what seems like a really cool idea, which
- 1:39:43I could go on something like this.
- 1:39:45Um, I love haunted houses and Halloween and all that looks pretty cool.
- 1:39:49That's it.
- 1:39:50I will say, looking back, we did make fun of it a little bit, but.
- 1:39:53Putting on our COVID goggles, this drive thru trick or treat Halloween
- 1:39:58experience makes a lot of sense.
- 1:40:00And I will say, tune in to our November drive through for Florida
- 1:40:05man runs over vampire and werewolf.
- 1:40:10I was curious.
- 1:40:11I did go on their website, the haunted road.
- 1:40:13com and, and they list kind of out all their safety features
- 1:40:16and this than the other.
- 1:40:17And so basically.
- 1:40:18I think they've thought of that.
- 1:40:20So they said that as you're driving the car through this attraction, nobody
- 1:40:24is going to be interacting with you.
- 1:40:26So it's kind of like a point A to B to C to D kind of thing.
- 1:40:28And then you kind of drive up to the scene or the scenario or whatever.
- 1:40:33And then that's where the interaction happens in your car to put your car
- 1:40:36in park and this, that, and the other.
- 1:40:37And then while you're moving from one checkpoint or scene to the next,
- 1:40:42the speed limit is five miles an hour and all this stuff, and all
- 1:40:44the performers are wearing masks and complying with COVID recommendations
- 1:40:49and same thing if you're in your car and your windows are up, you're fine.
- 1:40:52If you have your windows down, they ask that you do also please
- 1:40:54wear masks, et cetera, et cetera.
- 1:40:56So apparently there's also a super scary experience for like certain age group
- 1:41:02or whatever that costs like way extra.
- 1:41:04So I'm not sure what you're getting out of that, but it's,
- 1:41:06it's, it's called carjacking.
- 1:41:08That's what I know.
- 1:41:10It's like an extra 80 bucks or something to go on like the
- 1:41:13ultimate experience or something.
- 1:41:15I'm like, Whoa, it's to pay the tow truck driver.
- 1:41:18So you can get it at a Hawk later.
- 1:41:20Yeah.
- 1:41:21I don't know.
- 1:41:22I want to throw out a challenge to any of our listeners who may be in that
- 1:41:25area who decide to go to this, please put a GoPro on the top of your car.
- 1:41:28We would love to see footage from it.
- 1:41:30100%.
- 1:41:31Well, folks, it's time to wrap things up with our final segment, the secret sauce.
- 1:41:36We rally together our GTM specific news.
- 1:41:40So to recap the month of podcast episodes, if you only tune in
- 1:41:43for the drive through, I think we set off the month pretty strong.
- 1:41:46We had our special guest, Mark Francis on break fix to talk about safety as a city.
- 1:41:52System, and he represents one of the largest motorsport safety
- 1:41:56distributors in the United States.
- 1:41:58That's OG racing and good news there.
- 1:42:01There's a lot of really awesome closeout deals right now on, especially
- 1:42:05on 2015 helmets and other goodies.
- 1:42:07So if you're looking to save a buck, please be sure to
- 1:42:10check out www dot OG racing.
- 1:42:12com.
- 1:42:13In addition to that, we played a round of name that engine or name that tune.
- 1:42:18We did a little lighter episode, a game show episode.
- 1:42:21where we pitted our resident Viking, Brad, our co host here tonight, uh,
- 1:42:27against mountain man, Dan, in a name that tune like game show where we
- 1:42:31played, uh, sound clips and had them guess for points, you know, what the
- 1:42:35vehicle was and what engine it was.
- 1:42:37They did have some lifelines.
- 1:42:38It was a very entertaining episode.
- 1:42:40So if you missed that, be sure to check it out.
- 1:42:43After that, we had a sit down with Garrett Walls from Chaz's used auto parts.
- 1:42:47We talked a little bit about the history of Chaz's, but we got deep and dirty
- 1:42:52in the world of dirt track racing.
- 1:42:55So if you're into that.
- 1:42:56Please be sure to check that out.
- 1:42:57In addition, we had a special bonus episode, which was a weekend recap
- 1:43:01episode that Brad and I did with John Richter regarding the fall finale
- 1:43:06at Virginia international raceway.
- 1:43:09And by the time you guys hear this episode, there will be a special pit
- 1:43:12stop episode, which is a sub series within break fix, where we do some
- 1:43:17off the cuff interviews with fans.
- 1:43:18folks specifically for John, uh, as he is transferring from the DMV down to Texas to
- 1:43:25join Tanya in the Southern States region.
- 1:43:27And, uh, we do a special recap episode with him about his time here in the DMV.
- 1:43:32And that'll be available on October 30th through Patreon.
- 1:43:36And we will re air on our normal stream sometime in January of 21.
- 1:43:42In addition to that, wrapping up the month of October, we had the Dr.
- 1:43:46Anthony DeCesaro and Race Liberante from Race Factory USA on the show to talk about
- 1:43:53how they're changing the world of karting.
- 1:43:55So five really strong episodes there for you guys to check out.
- 1:43:59And obviously that bonus Pit Stop episode with John Richter.
- 1:44:02And we have more really cool things coming for the month of November.
- 1:44:06So stay tuned for updates every Tuesday on our regular stream.
- 1:44:10In addition to that, I think we were happy to announce some new partnerships.
- 1:44:14Who have we got on board now, Brad?
- 1:44:16We have the IMRRC, or the International Motor Racing Research
- 1:44:21Center, and Garage Riot, who we hope to have on the show soon.
- 1:44:24In addition to that, one of our members, Jordan Furman, is putting
- 1:44:27together his capstone project.
- 1:44:30He is a soon to be filmmaker director, and it's a comedy based
- 1:44:36upon a car that is near and dear to Tanya and I, an 83 Audi coupe.
- 1:44:42It's supposed to be set in the nineties.
- 1:44:44It's a period comedy, and it's about an unlikely friendship, a replacement
- 1:44:48battery and sketchy street vendors.
- 1:44:51And so we're going to have Jordan on the show to talk about that
- 1:44:53a little bit more in the future.
- 1:44:55But right now he's asking for support.
- 1:44:57He's looking for funding, you know, Putting together a movie as his, you
- 1:45:01know, final, let's call it his final exam for school is a costly endeavor.
- 1:45:06So if you're interested in helping him out, we've posted the link in our
- 1:45:09show notes so you can go and support him through Indiegogo so that he
- 1:45:14can get this film off the ground and maybe finally graduate college, right?
- 1:45:17Outside of that, I think we have some, a couple of shout outs left.
- 1:45:21Uh, we'd like to thank Dr.
- 1:45:23T and Race Liberante from Race Factory USA.
- 1:45:26We'd like to thank Dan Rao for coming on the show.
- 1:45:28He's going to be on in November to talk about truck night in America.
- 1:45:32Uh, we'd like to thank Ryan Staub from Lockton Motorsports.
- 1:45:35And we have a couple new Patreons for October.
- 1:45:38First off, we have Leonardo Giambi.
- 1:45:40Lenny is an avid listener.
- 1:45:42He happens to be a relative, and we thank him for his support.
- 1:45:46And we look forward to more suggestions and feedback from Lenny as we continue
- 1:45:51to, you know, build out the show.
- 1:45:52In addition to that, we'd like to thank Andrew Bang for also
- 1:45:55signing up to be a Patreon.
- 1:45:56And holding on to that, 302 boss Mustang for me for an extra week.
- 1:46:03And of course we would love to thank our co host and the person who
- 1:46:07keeps the drive through going Tanya.
- 1:46:10Thank you.
- 1:46:11And I have a shout out or two.
- 1:46:13There's a certain host who I believe has a birthday this week.
- 1:46:18So.
- 1:46:21And also, member zero of GTM has a birthday this week, so I hope he's up
- 1:46:26there running some laps with Senna.
- 1:46:28That is for sure.
- 1:46:29And if you don't know who we're talking about, visit our website and search
- 1:46:33member zero to get that backstory on it.
- 1:46:35And it's part of the GTM origin story as well.
- 1:46:38But yes, uh, we can't sing happy birthday to Brad over the air because
- 1:46:42apparently royalties and copyrights, etc.
- 1:46:45So, uh, If you've ever seen, uh, several episodes of sunny in Philadelphia,
- 1:46:48we're not allowed to do that here.
- 1:46:50So yeah, right.
- 1:46:53But we will, we will wish you the best of happy birthdays and congratulations on
- 1:46:58completing yet another lap around the sun.
- 1:47:01Well, thank you.
- 1:47:02Thank you.
- 1:47:03All right.
- 1:47:03And with that, I think it's time to end.
- 1:47:05I agree.
- 1:47:06Let's let's end this, please.
- 1:47:07Hi,
- 1:47:18Cars in front of us, cars in back of us, all just waiting to order.
- 1:47:22There's some idiot in a Volvo, with his brights on behind me.
- 1:47:27I lean out the window and scream, hey, whatcha tryna do, blind me?
- 1:47:31My wife says maybe we should
