- 0:17Speaker 1: right now with Jana Keller, and we're going to talk
- 0:20Speaker 1: about Grandma Lou's Halo. And would you say it's like
- 0:23Speaker 1: a Halloween party, or how would you refer to this event?
- 0:26Speaker 2: It's almost kind of like a festival.
- 0:28Speaker 1: And this is something that your family has been doing
- 0:30Speaker 1: for a little while. Let's talk about the background of
- 0:33Speaker 1: this event. Then we're going to tell them how they
- 0:35Speaker 1: can be a part of it this year. But where
- 0:36Speaker 1: did all of this get started?
- 0:38Speaker 2: Well, you know, my mom really loved Halloween. And she
- 0:42Speaker 2: instilled that love of Halloween into her children and grandchildren.
- 0:46Speaker 2: The best way to describe her is a spunky prankster.
- 0:52Speaker 2: She would dress up as a witch and come to
- 0:55Speaker 2: my classroom as the room mother and bring everybody inside.
- 0:59Speaker 2: Halloween cutout cookies. And she passed away in 2020. And
- 1:05Speaker 2: we do this in her memory. We created Grandma Lou's Hollow.
- 1:09Speaker 2: She actually got to come and see it back when
- 1:13Speaker 2: we did it in the garage. We started this in 2017.
- 1:17Speaker 2: So this is our 10th Halloween this year. And like
- 1:20Speaker 2: I said, we started in the garage with maybe 100 guests.
- 1:25Speaker 2: And when COVID hit in 2020, We wanted to keep
- 1:29Speaker 2: it safe. So we turned it into a drive-by and
- 1:33Speaker 2: where you could just drive by and open your window
- 1:36Speaker 2: and we'd hand you candy. And we were amazed because
- 1:39Speaker 2: we had about a thousand cars drive by our house
- 1:41Speaker 2: that night. And so we kind of, we moved it
- 1:44Speaker 2: out into the yard and have kept it. It's an
- 1:48Speaker 2: interactive thing. You can just drive by in your car
- 1:51Speaker 2: if you want, or if you get out of your
- 1:53Speaker 2: car and want to check us out, We do a
- 1:57Speaker 2: visual scavenger hunt. And once you've found all those items
- 2:02Speaker 2: in the hunt, you can turn your sheet, your checklist
- 2:05Speaker 2: off into us and we'll give you a little prize.
- 2:09Speaker 2: We have all sorts of games for adults and for children.
- 2:14Speaker 2: This year, we have some special entertainment. On Friday night,
- 2:19Speaker 2: we're having the South Dakota Ghostbusters. And on Saturday night,
- 2:24Speaker 2: Halloween itself, the Sioux Falls Sanderson sisters are going to
- 2:28Speaker 2: be here. And both nights, we are going to feature
- 2:32Speaker 2: a stilt-walking Frankenstein's monster. So we have lots of fun
- 2:37Speaker 2: things planned for this year. But yeah, this all started
- 2:41Speaker 2: just out of a memory of my mom and to
- 2:46Speaker 2: pass her love of Halloween on to the next generation.
- 2:50Speaker 2: and into the community. She was very generous and community focused.
- 2:57Speaker 2: And we want to do that, that same thing here
- 2:59Speaker 2: at Grandma Lou's Hollow, which is why we keep our
- 3:03Speaker 2: event free.
- 3:04Speaker 1: I absolutely love that.
- 3:06Speaker 2: Yeah. We want to provide a free, um, opportunity for,
- 3:10Speaker 2: for people to come and not have to spend a
- 3:13Speaker 2: lot of money. You can spend 10 minutes here. We've
- 3:16Speaker 2: got people who spend up to an hour here, um,
- 3:20Speaker 2: And we say that we scare to meet your needs.
- 3:24Speaker 2: Like if you show up with a toddler and they're
- 3:26Speaker 2: a little nervous, we want them to have fun. We
- 3:30Speaker 2: want them to... we want them to love Halloween and
- 3:34Speaker 2: have it be a good thing. But if we get
- 3:36Speaker 2: like some middle schoolers show up who think that they're
- 3:40Speaker 2: all that, you know, we're going to try our best
- 3:42Speaker 2: to give them a good scare, but mostly we're just,
- 3:45Speaker 2: we're very family focused and we want the big people
- 3:49Speaker 2: to have fun too. So that big people can have fun,
- 3:55Speaker 2: have a good Halloween memory with their little people.
- 3:59Speaker 1: I think it's really, really cool. And for folks that
- 4:02Speaker 1: are not familiar with this, we're going to tell them
- 4:04Speaker 1: where they can go and how they can be a
- 4:05Speaker 1: part of it. Grandma Lou's, not Halloween. What is it?
- 4:08Speaker 1: Grandma Lou's Hallow?
- 4:09Speaker 2: Grandma Lou's Hallow, H-A-L-L-O-W. We do have a Facebook page
- 4:14Speaker 2: that has all of our information on there, our hours
- 4:17Speaker 2: and our theme. Our theme this year is Monster Mash,
- 4:20Speaker 2: which is kind of like Grandma Lou's Hallow's greatest hits
- 4:23Speaker 2: through the past 10 years. And it's kind of also
- 4:27Speaker 2: a birthday party since this is our 10th year. My
- 4:30Speaker 2: address is in my front yard. My address is at
- 4:34Speaker 2: 913 West 36th Street, and that is located in central
- 4:38Speaker 2: Sioux Falls.
- 4:39Speaker 1: That is awesome. And I put a link to the
- 4:42Speaker 1: page on our Facebook page. So if you're looking for it,
- 4:45Speaker 1: you can search facebook.com slash Sunny Radio. And I love
- 4:48Speaker 1: that you're doing this to honor your mother. That's really cool.
- 4:50Speaker 2: Thank you. And I do it. I do it mostly
- 4:52Speaker 2: with my son and his wife and actually with my,
- 4:55Speaker 2: this sounds weird, but with my ex-husband. And I have
- 4:59Speaker 2: a really great team of volunteers. I have to give
- 5:02Speaker 2: credit to my volunteers. I couldn't do this without them.
- 5:05Speaker 2: They come and they help set everything up and pack
- 5:08Speaker 2: everything away and interact with the crowd. And one of
- 5:11Speaker 2: the also things that makes us different is that we
- 5:14Speaker 2: have live actors that will interact with you. We don't
- 5:19Speaker 2: have any animatronics or anything like that. This is just
- 5:23Speaker 2: people being with other people and we try to keep
- 5:27Speaker 2: it very community minded.
- 5:29Speaker 1: Well, I think it's really cool. And how do you
- 5:30Speaker 1: pay for this? Do you have sponsors that help pay
- 5:32Speaker 1: for it? Or where does the money come from to
- 5:34Speaker 1: buy the candy and all this stuff?
- 5:36Speaker 2: We do accept donations. That helps us to keep going.
- 5:40Speaker 2: And actually, on Saturday the 17th, that's the day that
- 5:44Speaker 2: we're going to set up. We also, since we'll be
- 5:47Speaker 2: outside in the front yard all day, if people want
- 5:49Speaker 2: to drop off some candy, we'd appreciate any donations of
- 5:54Speaker 2: candy if somebody wants to drop something off. That would
- 5:57Speaker 2: be helpful. I also try to just keep it on
- 6:01Speaker 2: a rummage hound. And so when I like to just
- 6:05Speaker 2: rummage for my items and when I see something, I
- 6:08Speaker 2: try to use my Halloween eye and go, how can
- 6:10Speaker 2: I use this to make it look creepy? And so
- 6:14Speaker 2: I make a lot of my own stuff. So the
- 6:16Speaker 2: longer that I do this, the less it costs me,
- 6:19Speaker 2: if that makes sense, because I already have a lot
- 6:22Speaker 2: of things that are already made and I try to
- 6:25Speaker 2: repurpose things and, um, So that's helpful.
- 6:29Speaker 1: That is very cool. And let's give the address one
- 6:31Speaker 1: more time. I've shared it on Facebook. For folks that
- 6:33Speaker 1: are not on Facebook, where do they go on the
- 6:35Speaker 1: 30th and 31st for this?
- 6:37Speaker 2: I am at 913 West 36th Street.
- 6:41Speaker 1: And like I said, I do have a link to
- 6:43Speaker 1: the page on our Facebook page. And again, thank you
- 6:46Speaker 1: so much for taking the time to chat. I really
- 6:48Speaker 1: love this.
- 6:48Speaker 2: Thank you, John. I appreciate the exposure and your time
- 6:51Speaker 2: for the interview.
- 6:52Speaker 1: Absolutely. You are doing the hard part. I'm doing the
- 6:54Speaker 1: easy part. I'm just telling people what you guys are doing,
- 6:56Speaker 1: and it's very, very cool. If you would like to
- 6:58Speaker 1: learn more, I do have a link to it on
- 7:00Speaker 1: our Facebook page, facebook.com slash Sunny Radio and facebook.com slash
- 7:05Speaker 1: Sioux Falls News.
- 7:06Speaker 2: Something you should know.
