- 1:38Speaker 14: What's up, and welcome to Movie Knockdown's Attack of a
- 1:40Speaker 14: Killer Scientist.
- 1:41Speaker 6: I am Brian, and with me is.
- 1:42Speaker 2: Hi, I'm Carl.
- 1:44Speaker 14: I would say you're introducing, but technically you were here
- 1:47Speaker 14: a few episodes back when we hung out with Adam Burke.
- 1:50Speaker 2: That's right, and it was a good time. It was
- 1:52Speaker 2: a good time. Very fluid.
- 1:53Speaker 15: That dude knew a lot about movies. I was like, oh,
- 1:56Speaker 15: just listen, because you don't know as much as.
- 1:58Speaker 2: This guy for a second.
- 1:59Speaker 6: I believe we referenced the Kubrick deep cut.
- 2:01Speaker 14: So, I mean, you know, when you got that going,
- 2:03Speaker 14: you know you're talking to somebody who's a big movie geek.
- 2:06Speaker 14: But somewhere around that time, I'm like, hey, we also
- 2:09Speaker 14: do soundtracks, and we're going to be hitting this festival,
- 2:12Speaker 14: and somebody got suckered into doing that.
- 2:14Speaker 2: I said, did you say that festival?
- 2:17Speaker 6: You know, that forecastle festival that we're at right now.
- 2:21Speaker 14: We are coming to you live via digital recording from
- 2:23Speaker 14: Four Castle Festival here in Louisville, Kentucky.
- 2:27Speaker 6: Listen to the crowd. It's all for us, people. It's
- 2:31Speaker 6: all for us.
- 2:32Speaker 16: Nice.
- 2:33Speaker 6: So, what's your take on this here festival so far?
- 2:37Speaker 2: What year is it in? Do you know?
- 2:41Speaker 6: It's over a decade now.
- 2:42Speaker 17: Yeah.
- 2:42Speaker 6: It might be 11, 12.
- 2:43Speaker 2: Past 10? Okay.
- 2:46Speaker 18: Nice.
- 2:47Speaker 2: It's very well structured, in my opinion.
- 2:50Speaker 6: That's my thinking.
- 2:51Speaker 14: And I've thought that more and more every year I
- 2:53Speaker 14: come here.
- 2:53Speaker 15: I've been to a few that, you know, I've been
- 2:57Speaker 15: to a handful of festivals. And sometimes when they're poorly
- 2:59Speaker 15: laid out, it makes you just not want to go
- 3:01Speaker 15: back the next year. And it seems like they were
- 3:02Speaker 15: maybe conscious of that continually, which is smart. Because this
- 3:06Speaker 15: is a big place and a lot of people. And
- 3:10Speaker 15: everyone looks good because they feel good. It looks like
- 3:14Speaker 15: everyone is, you know what I mean? Like I don't
- 3:16Speaker 15: see anyone who really looks bummed out.
- 3:18Speaker 14: That's what we were noticing last year. It doesn't seem
- 3:20Speaker 14: like it falls into the weird pitfalls of some of
- 3:23Speaker 14: those other ones. Like some of the really grungy underbelly
- 3:26Speaker 14: of some of these shows that you like kind of
- 3:28Speaker 14: see stuff and you're like, oh, yeah, you see some horrifying.
- 3:31Speaker 2: So you want to throw a music festival.
- 3:33Speaker 14: So you want to have somebody, you know, doing heroin
- 3:36Speaker 14: in the bushes next year.
- 3:38Speaker 6: Headliner.
- 3:39Speaker 2: Have you thought out what's going to happen in your bushes?
- 3:41Speaker 14: Do you want to have somebody urinating next to the stage?
- 3:44Speaker 14: You know, you don't see the underbelly on this one.
- 3:46Speaker 14: It's a pretty tight ship. No pun intended since they
- 3:49Speaker 14: have an audible theme. But they do kind of run a.
- 3:51Speaker 6: Tight ship as far as everything's kind of upbeat and cool.
- 3:55Speaker 2: Oh yeah, this kid that just got busted?
- 3:56Speaker 6: Probably.
- 3:56Speaker 2: They were on top of him.
- 3:57Speaker 6: Probably.
- 3:58Speaker 2: They weren't really slackers on that.
- 4:00Speaker 6: Maybe with this.
- 4:04Speaker 14: Extra drum beats we got going on the background here,
- 4:06Speaker 14: we'll just cut straight to a song. Do you have
- 4:09Speaker 14: a soundtrack song that you would like to kick things
- 4:11Speaker 14: off with?
- 4:11Speaker 19: Oh, man.
- 4:15Speaker 2: I know one. I thought of one.
- 4:17Speaker 8: Okay.
- 4:17Speaker 6: You've got one.
- 4:18Speaker 15: So I think it was Tarantino who said that if
- 4:22Speaker 15: you use a song really, really well in a scene,
- 4:27Speaker 15: that song will remind people of your scene for the
- 4:29Speaker 15: rest of their lives.
- 4:30Speaker 6: It's true.
- 4:30Speaker 15: And, of course, he's saying that about Stuck in the
- 4:33Speaker 15: Middle with You. Which is fucking obvious. But of course,
- 4:37Speaker 15: there's no way. Especially once he explains that to you, right?
- 4:40Speaker 15: So then I was like, all right, so what other
- 4:42Speaker 15: scenes do I know that I think are really well done?
- 4:44Speaker 15: And honestly, whenever I hear everybody wants to rule the
- 4:48Speaker 15: world by Tears of Fears, I think at least for
- 4:53Speaker 15: a tiny second, I always think of that closing scene.
- 4:57Speaker 2: On Real Genius.
- 4:58Speaker 16: Yeah.
- 4:58Speaker 15: With the popcorn blowing the house apart. It's just really,
- 5:02Speaker 15: really well put together.
- 5:02Speaker 2: So... Once this truck goes by, let's listen to Everybody
- 5:09Speaker 2: Wants to.
- 5:09Speaker 8: Rule the World.
- 5:20Speaker 1: Welcome to your life Welcome to your.
- 5:28Speaker 20: Life There's no turning back.
- 5:45Speaker 4: Even while we sleep.
- 5:51Speaker 20: We will find.
- 5:52Speaker 1: You acting on your best behavior. Turn your back on
- 5:59Speaker 1: Mother Nature. Everybody wants to rule the world.
- 6:11Speaker 4: It's my.
- 6:14Speaker 1: Own design It's my own design.
- 6:29Speaker 14: Help me make.
- 6:30Speaker 1: The most of freedom and of pleasure.
- 6:35Speaker 4: Nothing ever lasts forever.
- 6:37Speaker 1: Everybody wants to rule the world. There's a room where
- 6:58Speaker 1: the light won't find you Holding hands while the walls
- 7:02Speaker 1: come tumbling down When they do, I'll be right behind
- 7:06Speaker 1: you So glad we've almost made it So sad they
- 7:09Speaker 1: had to fade it Everybody wants to move on so
- 7:29Speaker 1: so I can't stand this indecision Married with a lack
- 8:05Speaker 1: of vision Everybody wants to know Say that you'll never, never, never,
- 8:14Speaker 1: never need it What hell of why believe it Everybody
- 8:22Speaker 1: wants to know All for freedom and adventure Nothing ever
- 8:38Speaker 1: lasts forever Everybody I'm home I'm home I'm.
- 9:03Speaker 8: Home Well, hello, boy. Now, what do you say?
- 9:22Speaker 21: Let's make with the popcorn right away.
- 9:25Speaker 8: Too much trouble and bother. Yes, indeed.
- 9:27Speaker 17: No, man.
- 9:28Speaker 8: Heat's all you need. You need more than heat, boy.
- 9:30Speaker 8: According to Hoyle, you need popcorn, salt, butter, and oil.
- 9:33Speaker 8: And a frying pan ought to be completely proper.
- 9:36Speaker 6: You ought to have a popper.
- 9:37Speaker 8: I dig it you ain't a hip old man.
- 9:39Speaker 18: To easy pop pops in its own pan.
- 9:41Speaker 8: You mean easy pop pops in its own pan? Now
- 9:44Speaker 8: you're swinging, daddy. Crazy man.
- 9:45Speaker 2: Why don't you make it with me to the grocery shop?
- 9:48Speaker 8: We'll both take a pan of this easy pop.
- 9:50Speaker 17: What do you know?
- 9:51Speaker 8: No muss, no fuss. There's easy pop popcorn for all
- 9:53Speaker 8: of us.
- 9:50Speaker 14: All right.
- 9:50Speaker 8: So as we're wandering around, we keep coming across different
- 9:53Speaker 8: Meltdown characters. And now we have Josh. Hello.
- 9:56Speaker 5: So how have you found the festival?
- 10:17Speaker 6: Oh, it's okay.
- 10:18Speaker 19: I mean, I'm volunteering today, and there's really nothing specific
- 10:21Speaker 19: I wanted to see. I just wanted to actually experience
- 10:23Speaker 19: the event.
- 10:24Speaker 6: It is an experience.
- 10:25Speaker 19: Yeah, and the band I wanted to see played first,
- 10:27Speaker 19: so I got that out of the way. I got
- 10:28Speaker 19: to see them and just kind of checking out new
- 10:31Speaker 19: things here and there. And I'll hear my morning jacket,
- 10:33Speaker 19: which I've never dug into, so I'll give them a shot,
- 10:38Speaker 19: and I'll see their full show.
- 10:40Speaker 6: Yeah, there's a lot of stuff to choose from. Absolutely.
- 10:44Speaker 14: Four stages going at once. There's always something going on.
- 10:48Speaker 14: So as we're building our soundtrack as we go this weekend,
- 10:51Speaker 14: do you have your songs of choice for this soundtrack?
- 10:55Speaker 19: Yeah, I'm going to do the top three that came
- 10:57Speaker 19: to mind. I'm going to go three, two, one, my
- 10:59Speaker 19: favorite last. So one that really I loved was the
- 11:05Speaker 19: use of the song. It was actually in Let the
- 11:09Speaker 19: Right One In, the Swedish vampire movie with the kids.
- 11:11Speaker 19: And it was a scene where she takes a shower
- 11:15Speaker 19: after she kind of bleeds. And, like, there's this kind
- 11:20Speaker 19: of tender moment where she comes out and she puts
- 11:22Speaker 19: a dress on and all that kind of stuff in
- 11:23Speaker 19: the bedroom. And it's a song that, it's just this, like,
- 11:26Speaker 19: Swedish pop song from the year, like, mid-' 80s, early-' 80s. And
- 11:30Speaker 19: it ends up, it turns out it was the guy from,
- 11:33Speaker 19: I think that was Roxette's.
- 11:35Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 11:35Speaker 19: Later on?
- 11:36Speaker 6: The other half.
- 11:36Speaker 19: And in the American version, they used, like, another kind of, like,
- 11:39Speaker 19: similar song.
- 11:42Speaker 22: Yeah.
- 12:02Speaker 10: The smell of your hair I don't want to hear
- 12:05Speaker 10: But you can't be Everything.
- 12:12Speaker 2: You said You have to give.
- 12:14Speaker 1: Up Where is.
- 12:19Speaker 2: My city?
- 12:22Speaker 23: On the seat back there A broken newspaper A dry
- 12:29Speaker 23: piece of chocolate Hela mitt.
- 12:36Speaker 4: Hjärta, krossat som glas. Snyggt när du sa du måste
- 12:40Speaker 4: ge dig av. Where am I supposed to go?
- 13:21Speaker 23: Where am I supposed to go?
- 13:22Speaker 16: The streets.
- 13:25Speaker 23: Are filled with people everywhere.
- 13:28Speaker 16: Because in my car.
- 13:29Speaker 4: There's only me.
- 13:34Speaker 23: And everything you said, you have to give me.
- 13:39Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 14:11Speaker 19: So that was just like, that just really encapsulated that
- 14:15Speaker 19: interaction between them. And the song represented that to me
- 14:18Speaker 19: because he got a glimpse of her as she was
- 14:20Speaker 19: changing and it kind of uncovered some things about her.
- 14:24Speaker 6: Which is a whole other weird thing.
- 14:25Speaker 19: Yeah, in the book it actually gets more into that.
- 14:27Speaker 6: Truthfully, I think doesn't. work in that movie.
- 14:29Speaker 19: No in the movie it just shows that she had
- 14:31Speaker 19: been damaged.
- 14:32Speaker 14: But it yeah and to me it ends up opening
- 14:35Speaker 14: up more doors than it needs to especially since it
- 14:37Speaker 14: doesn't answer anything still the movie is impeccable I think
- 14:41Speaker 14: the movie is amazing and truthfully I would have Trim
- 14:44Speaker 14: to that part out.
- 14:45Speaker 6: Like, had him see her.
- 14:46Speaker 19: I think even.
- 14:47Speaker 6: Because I think it works better.
- 14:48Speaker 14: Their relationship, I think, works just fine the way that
- 14:51Speaker 14: it works in the film, which is different than the
- 14:53Speaker 14: way the character setup is in the book. And, like,
- 14:55Speaker 14: I think it's fine no matter what she is or
- 14:57Speaker 14: has been through or whatever.
- 14:59Speaker 6: Exactly. I think the relationship's awesome.
- 15:01Speaker 19: I like the innocence in the movie.
- 15:03Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 15:04Speaker 14: I kind of like it better than what I know
- 15:06Speaker 14: goes down in the story. I think it does have
- 15:07Speaker 14: a cool.
- 15:08Speaker 19: Right.
- 15:09Speaker 6: Essence of innocence.
- 15:10Speaker 14: That I think you're going to lose once you get
- 15:12Speaker 14: into all the grimy stuff in the book.
- 15:14Speaker 19: But it still works. It was definitely pushing that. My
- 15:17Speaker 19: second one is Zodiac. I believe it's the first scene
- 15:23Speaker 19: when the first couple is killed or whatever. They use
- 15:25Speaker 19: Hurdy Gurdy Man. And from what I understand, that's actually
- 15:29Speaker 19: the rhythm section of that song is Led Zeppelin. So
- 15:31Speaker 19: it's John Paul Jones and blanking his name. Why am
- 15:35Speaker 19: I blanking the drummer?
- 15:36Speaker 6: John Bonham.
- 15:37Speaker 19: Yeah, so, like, that song actually has, like, this, it
- 15:39Speaker 19: kind of captures that era anyway, even though, I mean,
- 15:43Speaker 19: the Zodiac's later on, but the way they use that
- 15:45Speaker 19: song and the build-up and everything about it and that, like,
- 15:48Speaker 19: the guy dressed as the cop coming up and everything, that,
- 15:52Speaker 19: I just, I thought that was really effective. It just
- 15:53Speaker 19: really had that kind of sinister impending doom kind of
- 15:58Speaker 19: aspect to it.
- 15:59Speaker 14: It's a weird song anyway, so to sort of, like,
- 16:01Speaker 14: juxtapose it with that image and that action going on, like, it's,
- 16:06Speaker 14: It's a really clever use of it.
- 16:08Speaker 19: The song itself has a wonderful build just at that crescendo,
- 16:12Speaker 19: which the movie's fantastic.
- 16:13Speaker 6: Yeah, it definitely is.
- 16:15Speaker 19: It's, yeah.
- 16:18Speaker 24: Thrown like a star in my vast sleep, I open
- 16:25Speaker 24: my eyes to take a peek.
- 16:28Speaker 6: To find that I was by.
- 16:30Speaker 24: The sea Gazing with tranquility Just then when the hurdy-gurdy
- 16:36Speaker 24: man Came singing songs of love Then when the hurdy-gurdy
- 16:43Speaker 24: man Came singing songs.
- 16:46Speaker 4: Of love Hurdy-gurdy, gurdy-gurdy love Gurdy-gurdy, it's sad Histories of
- 16:57Speaker 4: ages past, unenlightened shadows cast.
- 17:20Speaker 24: Down through all eternity, the crying of humanity. Tis then
- 17:26Speaker 24: when the hurdy-gurdy man.
- 17:28Speaker 4: Comes singing songs of love.
- 17:32Speaker 24: Then when the hurdy-gurdy man comes singing songs of love.
- 17:36Speaker 4: Hurdy-gurdy, hurdy-gurdy, hurdy-gurdy, girly sound.
- 17:47Speaker 8: Hathi-gadi, Hathi-gadi, Hathi-gadi, Hathi-gadi.
- 17:51Speaker 4: Hathi-gadi Hathi-gadi, Hathi-gadi, Hathi-gadi, Hathi-gadi, Hathi-gadi Good, good, good, good, good, good, good, good.
- 18:56Speaker 10: Good summer.
- 18:58Speaker 4: Here comes a roly-poly man, he's singing songs of love.
- 19:16Speaker 19: My favorite that just really came to mind was In
- 19:20Speaker 19: Until the End of the World, which the soundtrack itself
- 19:23Speaker 19: is phenomenal. And it was like, for the most part,
- 19:26Speaker 19: curated by Vin Vendors. He kind of like commissioned all
- 19:29Speaker 19: these different bands. And they did songs that were not
- 19:31Speaker 19: even their common thing, like Talking Heads did a really
- 19:33Speaker 19: interesting song that was outside of their comfort zone. But
- 19:37Speaker 19: they used an existing Peter Gabriel song as Blood of Eden.
- 19:40Speaker 19: And it's that pivotal moment in the movie when they're
- 19:42Speaker 19: in the airplane and the nuclear bomb goes off, essentially.
- 19:46Speaker 19: In the airplane, they're in this little Cessna thing. engine
- 19:50Speaker 19: turns off and it just goes dead quiet there's no
- 19:53Speaker 19: sound at all and then Blood of Eden just fades
- 19:55Speaker 19: in and they glide down and have like this rough
- 19:58Speaker 19: landing or whatever but the way they look at each
- 20:00Speaker 19: other everything about that scene I like I got goosebumps
- 20:05Speaker 19: I mean I get goosebumps but this was like such
- 20:07Speaker 19: a memorable scene It's just so beautiful and so melancholy.
- 20:11Speaker 1: ¶ ¶ ¶ ¶.
- 20:41Speaker 20: I caught sight of my reflection.
- 20:45Speaker 4: I caught it in the window.
- 20:48Speaker 21: I saw the darkness in my heart. I saw the
- 20:55Speaker 21: signs in my underwear. They had been there from the start.
- 21:07Speaker 21: And the darkness still has work to do. The knotted
- 21:14Speaker 21: cords untying The heated and the holy Oh, they're sitting
- 21:22Speaker 21: there on high So secure with everything they're buying In
- 21:30Speaker 21: the blood of Eden Lie the woman and the man
- 21:37Speaker 21: The man.
- 21:38Speaker 1: And the woman and the woman and the man in
- 21:42Speaker 1: the blood of Eden. Like the woman and the man,
- 21:49Speaker 1: we want in a union.
- 21:53Speaker 4: Oh, the union of the woman, the woman and the man.
- 22:10Speaker 21: My grip is surely slipping.
- 22:13Speaker 4: I think I've lost my hold.
- 22:16Speaker 21: Yes, I think I've lost my hold. I cannot get
- 22:24Speaker 21: insurance anymore.
- 22:28Speaker 4: They don't take credit, only gold.
- 22:35Speaker 21: Is that a dagger or a crucifix I see? Poured
- 22:42Speaker 21: so tightly in your hand And all the while the
- 22:49Speaker 21: distance grows between you.
- 22:51Speaker 4: And me.
- 22:54Speaker 21: I do not understand.
- 22:58Speaker 4: In the mud I feel.
- 23:01Speaker 19: Like a woman.
- 23:03Speaker 4: And a man With the man and the woman And.
- 23:08Speaker 1: The woman and the man In the blood of Eden
- 23:14Speaker 1: Like a woman and a man We wanted.
- 23:18Speaker 4: The union.
- 23:22Speaker 1: Oh, the union of the woman The woman and the.
- 23:27Speaker 4: Man Of my request What a moment this is.
- 24:37Speaker 2: I can hear the.
- 24:38Speaker 21: Distant thunder Of a million unheard souls Of.
- 24:43Speaker 4: A million unheard.
- 24:45Speaker 21: Souls Watch each one reach for creature comfort For the
- 24:56Speaker 21: filling of.
- 24:57Speaker 4: Their holes In the blood of Eden.
- 25:03Speaker 1: Like a woman and a man, with the.
- 25:07Speaker 4: Man and the woman, and the woman and the man,
- 25:12Speaker 4: in the blood of Eden.
- 25:13Speaker 1: Like a woman and a man, we want to leave you.
- 25:22Speaker 1: Like a woman.
- 25:23Speaker 4: And a man, in the blood of Eden. And I,
- 25:28Speaker 4: the woman and the man Are feeling.
- 25:32Speaker 1: Mad in the woman And the woman and the man
- 25:37Speaker 1: In the blood of Eden And I, the woman and
- 25:42Speaker 1: the man Are feeling mad in the woman And the
- 25:48Speaker 1: woman and the man In the blood of Eden We
- 25:54Speaker 1: have done everything we can In the blood of Eden.
- 26:01Speaker 2: And that's.
- 26:27Speaker 14: What I keep coming back to on this show, and
- 26:29Speaker 14: specifically this variation of the show, it's like, you get
- 26:33Speaker 14: those moments in movies anyway when it's just so well
- 26:35Speaker 14: put together that it affects you.
- 26:37Speaker 6: Oh, yeah.
- 26:38Speaker 14: And then I think, especially putting these soundtrack shows together,
- 26:40Speaker 14: I'm like, it works so well when you tie music in. Like,
- 26:44Speaker 14: you can have those moments without it, but when you
- 26:46Speaker 14: get that perfect mix of the story going on and
- 26:48Speaker 14: the cinematography, and then the perfect song kicks in, like,
- 26:51Speaker 14: it is a magic thing.
- 26:53Speaker 6: Like, it really is.
- 26:53Speaker 19: Yeah, and they enhance each other. I mean, that song
- 26:56Speaker 19: from now on... That moment in that movie is solidified,
- 26:59Speaker 19: and that moment in the movie would not have been
- 27:02Speaker 19: that without that song.
- 27:03Speaker 6: And vice versa. Every time you hear the song after that,
- 27:06Speaker 6: you think about the movie.
- 27:07Speaker 19: Absolutely. And I think that's, in some cases more than others,
- 27:10Speaker 19: I think the ones I listed, those are the ones
- 27:12Speaker 19: that made such an impact, and that's probably why they
- 27:14Speaker 19: came to mind first. I mean, there's other stuff. I mean,
- 27:16Speaker 19: there's great scores out there. So those are my three.
- 27:20Speaker 6: Very cool.
- 27:21Speaker 14: Thanks for working them in today. Anything else to pass along?
- 27:25Speaker 19: Can't think of anything.
- 27:27Speaker 6: Wear a sunscreen, kids.
- 27:29Speaker 12: Want some music for your ears? Doo-Wop Shop makes it

- 27:52Speaker 12: Doo-Wop Shop. We're serious about music.
- 28:10Speaker 2: Hi, this is Simon, and you're listening to Movie Meltdown.
- 28:12Speaker 6: Hi, this is Thomas. You're still listening to Movie Meltdown.
- 28:16Speaker 6: I'm the other one. I'm Mark.
- 28:17Speaker 2: Come on, Mark.
- 28:19Speaker 14: Hey.
- 28:20Speaker 4: Hey.
- 28:21Speaker 6: This is the one.
- 28:23Speaker 2: You're listening to Movie Meltdown.
- 28:32Speaker 14: All right, so back on track for us. Should we
- 28:36Speaker 14: get on to another song?
- 28:38Speaker 2: Yeah, do you have a good idea for a song?
- 28:41Speaker 6: Yeah, I was trying to. I did a little of
- 28:42Speaker 6: this last year.
- 28:43Speaker 14: I started looking at the people that were at the
- 28:45Speaker 14: show that we were going to see, and then I
- 28:46Speaker 14: was like, well, I'm sure everybody kind of has a
- 28:48Speaker 14: soundtrack tie-in. So then I started going through, and yesterday
- 28:52Speaker 14: I saw Cold War Kids over at the Boom stage.
- 28:56Speaker 16: Nice.
- 28:58Speaker 14: It was awkward, and I had to stay in the
- 28:59Speaker 14: whole time, but that's okay. That's how many a concert is,
- 29:02Speaker 14: so it's cool. But I did see Cold War Kids,
- 29:04Speaker 14: and then going through, we have Romance Languages, which is
- 29:09Speaker 14: actually uncredited in Dallas Buyers Club.
- 29:12Speaker 6: So it's like a secret hidden track.
- 29:14Speaker 2: If you haven't seen that, get on it. It's a
- 29:17Speaker 2: good movie.
- 29:18Speaker 6: So this is Romance Languages.
- 29:19Speaker 25: I have never had a devastating loss.
- 29:24Speaker 20: Watch over me when my bell rings.
- 29:29Speaker 25: I would rather be lucky than smart.
- 29:32Speaker 4: Throw me a.
- 29:33Speaker 6: Rope so I can blow rings.
- 29:36Speaker 4: I'm exhausted by rope.
- 29:44Speaker 25: I was lost in the languages I was lost in
- 30:20Speaker 25: the languages I'm.
- 30:26Speaker 1: Exhausted by romance I was lost, I was lost in
- 30:33Speaker 1: the languages.
- 30:34Speaker 25: I'm exhausted by romance I'm exhausted by romance.
- 31:24Speaker 4: I'm exhausted by.
- 31:27Speaker 6: Romance I'm exhausted by romance.
- 31:50Speaker 25: I'm exhausted by romance.
- 31:55Speaker 1: I'm exhausted by romance.
- 32:03Speaker 14: As we're hanging out here, do you want to recap
- 32:05Speaker 14: last night? Because you came in just under the wire
- 32:08Speaker 14: last night, and that, I think, was an interesting scenario.
- 32:11Speaker 2: Good call.
- 32:12Speaker 15: Well, I mean, I had to work, so I don't
- 32:15Speaker 15: want to do a podcast as much as I would
- 32:18Speaker 15: just want to see it.
- 32:19Speaker 2: You know, this headliner.
- 32:20Speaker 14: Oh, first and foremost, you wanted to sit here and
- 32:22Speaker 14: talk to me, but then, you know, and that Sam
- 32:24Speaker 14: Smith guy, he's all right too.
- 32:25Speaker 15: Well, but we had, yeah, we had two days. So
- 32:27Speaker 15: I was like, yeah, I'm just going to run to
- 32:28Speaker 15: get to Sam Smith. Well, and I also like, it
- 32:31Speaker 15: was a good day to fill out the space and
- 32:32Speaker 15: see like where the, what the layout was and how
- 32:34Speaker 15: far away my walk really was from parking, which was
- 32:38Speaker 15: a good walk. Yeah, it was, it's a stretch, um,
- 32:40Speaker 15: which gets even more interesting depending on the weather.
- 32:45Speaker 6: So yeah, I'm sure the end of the story will
- 32:47Speaker 6: be different, but go ahead.
- 32:49Speaker 15: I'm walking in and, you know, I have like my
- 32:51Speaker 15: bag with my umbrella and my water bottle and all
- 32:54Speaker 15: this stuff. And I'm like, and then I get really
- 32:56Speaker 15: conscious of the handle of my umbrella sticking out the
- 32:59Speaker 15: side of my bag. So I'm like, oh man, I'm
- 33:01Speaker 15: like the only person here with an umbrella. But then
- 33:03Speaker 15: I was like, I don't care.
- 33:04Speaker 6: What a loser. Nobody needs an umbrella at a show.
- 33:08Speaker 15: I'm not punk rock enough. But then I was like,
- 33:11Speaker 15: wait a minute. I just moved to this town and
- 33:13Speaker 15: I still don't trust it. I don't trust it. I
- 33:16Speaker 15: don't trust the weather.
- 33:17Speaker 6: I've lived here my whole life and I don't trust them.
- 33:19Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 33:20Speaker 15: Well, and that last winter hurt my feelings so bad
- 33:23Speaker 15: that I'll probably never not bring it up. So this
- 33:27Speaker 15: is for all the people that know me and know
- 33:29Speaker 15: how much I fucking hated that winter, last winter.
- 33:31Speaker 14: I have not been thrilled with the last several winters,
- 33:34Speaker 14: but that's just me.
- 33:36Speaker 15: And I'm poor and I live in a house with
- 33:37Speaker 15: no insulation or windows. Some locals are like, oh, it's
- 33:38Speaker 15: no big deal. And some people are like, no, that
- 33:40Speaker 15: one was really bad. What's happened before is indifferent to me.
- 33:44Speaker 15: That one, I will never get over.
- 33:46Speaker 2: Anyway, so... Yeah.
- 33:49Speaker 6: I'm like, all right.
- 33:49Speaker 15: So I'm the old guy with the umbrella. And we,
- 33:54Speaker 15: you know, we listened to Sam Smith, who his show
- 33:57Speaker 15: was really impressive.
- 33:59Speaker 6: He's really good. And he's got a hell of a voice.
- 34:01Speaker 2: Yeah, for sure.
- 34:02Speaker 15: And his range is sweet. Like we were walking up
- 34:05Speaker 15: and I was like, does he have a woman singing
- 34:06Speaker 15: with him? And then I was like, I don't think so. But,
- 34:09Speaker 15: I mean, he did have backup singers.
- 34:10Speaker 6: He did have backup singers.
- 34:11Speaker 2: But I don't believe it was the backup singers.
- 34:12Speaker 6: They were pretty solid, too, but they were a very
- 34:14Speaker 6: different style.
- 34:15Speaker 2: Yeah, totally.
- 34:16Speaker 15: And it didn't seem like, you know, it wasn't like, oh,
- 34:19Speaker 15: you have backup singers for what you can't do.
- 34:22Speaker 19: No.
- 34:22Speaker 15: Like, he was definitely the dominant sound in every song.
- 34:28Speaker 15: But he, so, I recently saw the Amy Winehouse documentary,
- 34:32Speaker 15: and I'm totally bandwagon.
- 34:34Speaker 2: Like, I didn't even, I mean.
- 34:36Speaker 15: I remember living in Austin at the time when that
- 34:38Speaker 15: album came out, and I heard it around me a lot,
- 34:40Speaker 15: but I didn't really jump into it, even though it
- 34:43Speaker 15: was probably some of the best shit that I'd heard
- 34:45Speaker 15: in a long time.
- 34:45Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 34:46Speaker 15: And so it wasn't until she was dead and then
- 34:48Speaker 15: it was all over Facebook that I asked my neighbor
- 34:51Speaker 15: if he would burn me a copy.
- 34:53Speaker 2: And he did, and I was like, okay. So I
- 34:54Speaker 2: was convinced right away.
- 34:55Speaker 15: So when that documentary came out, I went to it.
- 34:58Speaker 15: Because honestly, if you're a music lover in any way, Like,
- 35:03Speaker 15: it's a fucking tragedy that we only got a couple albums.
- 35:06Speaker 6: Out of that girl. Yeah, but I mean, that's so
- 35:08Speaker 6: many artists over the years. Yeah, it's true. It's just
- 35:11Speaker 6: kind of a continuing cycle.
- 35:13Speaker 2: I mean, it's not cool to get on that list,
- 35:15Speaker 2: you know, of like, man, they died fast.
- 35:17Speaker 6: It's like.
- 35:18Speaker 14: Some people think it is. It's not, but some people
- 35:20Speaker 14: still kind of give them this weird cred.
- 35:22Speaker 2: If you listen to Amy Winehouse, there's no way you
- 35:24Speaker 2: can't want more of that.
- 35:25Speaker 6: Definitely.
- 35:26Speaker 2: And there's a very limited number of songs we have
- 35:28Speaker 2: by Amy Winehouse, which is too bad.
- 35:30Speaker 15: The documentary led me to... the opinion that I think
- 35:34Speaker 15: her dad's a piece of shit. Not to like, you know,
- 35:37Speaker 15: get sued or call him out or anything, but while
- 35:40Speaker 15: I was working the other night, I had this anecdote
- 35:45Speaker 15: in my head come up that I was like, I
- 35:47Speaker 15: think that the sentence for Amy Winehouse's father being such
- 35:52Speaker 15: an asshole and contributing to her downfall, I think he
- 35:58Speaker 15: should be required to legitimately learn some form of music
- 36:03Speaker 15: like an instrument if it's got to be for him
- 36:05Speaker 15: but and he should give us at least two more
- 36:07Speaker 15: albums and i don't mean of like bullshit like he's
- 36:11Speaker 15: got to reach a caliber that he didn't respect in
- 36:13Speaker 15: his own daughter.
- 36:14Speaker 14: In my opinion court ordered learning of music and other
- 36:17Speaker 14: artistic endeavors yeah this is an interesting way i think
- 36:21Speaker 14: we should go with this.
- 36:22Speaker 15: Yeah i and you know i don't think anyone would
- 36:24Speaker 15: argue against it like if we got like if we
- 36:26Speaker 15: got a court of a lot of actually take on
- 36:29Speaker 15: this bullshit idea, I think people would get right behind
- 36:31Speaker 15: it and be like, yeah, for real, man. Give us
- 36:33Speaker 15: the albums that we weren't ever able to get out
- 36:36Speaker 15: of her because you let her run herself into the
- 36:39Speaker 15: ground because she wasn't ready.
- 36:42Speaker 14: Not respecting the true talent and not having any himself, probably.
- 36:48Speaker 14: Maybe if he honed that a little bit, he'd change
- 36:50Speaker 14: his tune.
- 36:50Speaker 19: Literally.
- 36:51Speaker 15: Well, there's that on that note, and I just think
- 36:53Speaker 15: it's a tragedy. But beyond that, It's pretty undeniable that
- 36:57Speaker 15: the best stuff is very.
- 36:58Speaker 2: Limited, you know. Like, because it doesn't get time to
- 37:01Speaker 2: mess itself up.
- 37:02Speaker 8: So, yeah.
- 37:03Speaker 6: So, this made you think of Sam Smith.
- 37:07Speaker 2: Because he sang a cover. Thank you for the.
- 37:09Speaker 6: I was bringing this back around. I was like, I
- 37:11Speaker 6: knew we were heading down that.
- 37:12Speaker 15: So, I'm sitting there listening to him, and I'm excited.
- 37:14Speaker 15: And then he's like, he asks if we know Amy Winehouse.
- 37:18Speaker 15: And I was like, he's asking me because he knows
- 37:21Speaker 15: I watched the movie three days ago. I know her
- 37:22Speaker 15: personally now because I saw that documentary.
- 37:24Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 37:25Speaker 15: He must know I've been listening to Amy Winehouse Pandora
- 37:27Speaker 15: for the last three days straight at work.
- 37:30Speaker 2: So then he goes into a, I don't even know. See,
- 37:32Speaker 2: this is what kind of a poser I am.
- 37:33Speaker 15: I don't even know what song it is, but it's
- 37:35Speaker 15: that song about the responsibility, and it's got that really
- 37:37Speaker 15: great snappy snare tiki-tac opening, which I didn't, this is
- 37:42Speaker 15: even more poser, I didn't realize was like a sampled
- 37:46Speaker 15: loop from a Tina song.
- 37:48Speaker 4: Nice.
- 37:49Speaker 2: I'm pretty sure.
- 37:49Speaker 6: Slightly old school.
- 37:51Speaker 2: From Ain't No Mountain High Enough.
- 37:54Speaker 15: Whether I'm wrong about this or right He started with
- 37:56Speaker 15: that song And just made me go so awesome Way
- 37:59Speaker 15: to give it up Because I believe he's English too
- 38:04Speaker 15: He's a Brit.
- 38:04Speaker 14: Yeah he definitely had a very noticeable accent During the
- 38:07Speaker 14: speech Again like most of the time You don't notice
- 38:09Speaker 14: so much during the singing But in between songs He's
- 38:12Speaker 14: like put your hands together He's very proper British Put
- 38:16Speaker 14: your hands together.
- 38:17Speaker 15: Which might be why he's so good I'll tell you
- 38:19Speaker 15: what British music man We're lucky that we're a little
- 38:23Speaker 15: more exciting to a lot of other countries because all
- 38:26Speaker 15: the good ones start in Britain and end up coming
- 38:29Speaker 15: over here to live.
- 38:30Speaker 6: But they all stole their genres from us.
- 38:32Speaker 2: Oh, that's a good point.
- 38:33Speaker 6: We made up all the music genres. They just got
- 38:35Speaker 6: kind of good at them. It's kind of true.
- 38:39Speaker 15: There's not a lot of touring British hip-hop that I
- 38:41Speaker 15: can think of over here, in my opinion. But anyway,
- 38:45Speaker 15: so he goes from an Amy song into his backup
- 38:48Speaker 15: singers doing the... Tina song and then back into the
- 38:52Speaker 15: Amy song with the same like hook or loop or
- 38:54Speaker 15: whatever the whole time. That really impressed me. Aside from
- 38:58Speaker 15: the fact that the sound was really well engineered, you know,
- 39:03Speaker 15: it was traveling well and his light show was pretty sweet.
- 39:07Speaker 3: I thought.
- 39:07Speaker 6: Yeah, he had a pretty high tech setup going there.
- 39:10Speaker 15: And he had pretty good I call it mic banter,
- 39:13Speaker 15: like between songs, like just stuff you talk about.
- 39:15Speaker 2: I will say this.
- 39:17Speaker 15: I heard his story about how he wrote this album
- 39:21Speaker 15: based on this crush he had on someone who didn't
- 39:23Speaker 15: reciprocate the crush.
- 39:24Speaker 8: Yep.
- 39:24Speaker 15: I heard that a while back on NPR and last
- 39:27Speaker 15: night he, he said it again. And then at the
- 39:29Speaker 15: end of it, he said, I'm totally over it. And
- 39:31Speaker 15: in my head I was thinking, you're, you're not over it.
- 39:34Speaker 15: If you're still standing on the microphone, buddy, that's just me.
- 39:37Speaker 6: I think this is part of the process.
- 39:39Speaker 14: Cause I'm like, I'm thinking to it and to me,
- 39:41Speaker 14: I'm like, the whole thing is like a cathartic thing.
- 39:43Speaker 14: And like, so the process of saying that and, and,
- 39:47Speaker 14: doing these songs over and over and over again, like,
- 39:50Speaker 14: wears it down and gets it to the point where
- 39:53Speaker 14: probably now he can say that and be almost legit. But, like,
- 39:56Speaker 14: two years ago when he started telling that story, I
- 39:59Speaker 14: bet he was still pretty busted up.
- 40:00Speaker 6: But I'm like, you know.
- 40:01Speaker 2: Well, and he had never been... I heard on NPR
- 40:03Speaker 2: he had never been in a relationship before.
- 40:05Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 40:06Speaker 6: They take their toll on you.
- 40:07Speaker 2: When he recorded that.
- 40:09Speaker 6: They take their toll. Yeah, and... I'm still bitter about it.
- 40:12Speaker 2: No, he, like, wasn't, like.
- 40:14Speaker 15: He wasn't even in this relationship because he presented... his
- 40:17Speaker 15: feelings to this person and they just denied it and
- 40:20Speaker 15: he was heartbroken without ever even having been in the
- 40:22Speaker 15: relationship and it was cool because terry gross shout out
- 40:26Speaker 15: to terry gross sorry she's really good at what she
- 40:27Speaker 15: does she uh she was like that's amazing because the
- 40:32Speaker 15: sound the songs are so emotional like the song sounds
- 40:34Speaker 15: so like pure and like like they come from wisdom
- 40:38Speaker 15: and if you you know haven't lived that you haven't
- 40:40Speaker 15: how did you replicate that experience and he just I
- 40:43Speaker 15: think he was just really good at going, well, I mean.
- 40:45Speaker 2: This is just the process.
- 40:46Speaker 14: Well, see, it's funny that that word came up because
- 40:48Speaker 14: that's what I thought. As soon as you said that,
- 40:50Speaker 14: I was like, well, that's why it's so good. It
- 40:51Speaker 14: is completely pure. It has not been.
- 40:54Speaker 6: Sullied by years and years of.
- 40:55Speaker 14: Bad relationships and bad breakups and people cheating on you
- 40:58Speaker 14: and lying to you and all this stuff that builds
- 41:00Speaker 14: up this resentment in you that when you go in
- 41:03Speaker 14: as a teenager, that's why you get so messed up
- 41:05Speaker 14: for those first few weeks because you go in completely
- 41:08Speaker 14: clean and.
- 41:09Speaker 6: You're just like, your heart is just completely... bear you
- 41:13Speaker 6: know you don't have scar tissue.
- 41:15Speaker 15: Yet so like she was out of control by the
- 41:17Speaker 15: time she was starting her 20s you know what i
- 41:19Speaker 15: mean yeah i'm thinking about my 20s and i'm like
- 41:22Speaker 15: geez i'm lucky to have that kind of discipline and
- 41:24Speaker 15: not have been that famous.
- 41:26Speaker 2: And he's pretty young himself right he's like.
- 41:27Speaker 6: 25 i think he's like mid-20s yeah he's still pretty.
- 41:30Speaker 15: Young so if i think of all the heartache i
- 41:33Speaker 15: still had to go through at that age that's pretty
- 41:36Speaker 15: significant man.
- 41:38Speaker 6: I'm still there now yeah So I was, yeah, it
- 41:42Speaker 6: was an impressive show.
- 41:43Speaker 2: And then.
- 41:43Speaker 14: And then we had a grand finale. I don't think
- 41:46Speaker 14: he could have planned the big finale.
- 41:47Speaker 2: Yeah, right? Well, when we were storming out, I just
- 41:50Speaker 2: turned to you and I was like, this is unforgettable, dude.
- 41:53Speaker 8: It is.
- 41:53Speaker 2: Oh, right?
- 41:54Speaker 6: Storming out.
- 41:55Speaker 14: So, I don't know if you, you were over, I
- 41:59Speaker 14: don't know if you felt it, because I felt that moment.
- 42:02Speaker 2: Oh, yeah, the cold burst of air.
- 42:03Speaker 6: When it just.
- 42:04Speaker 14: Like, I've never, I've stood around in weather my whole life.
- 42:07Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 42:08Speaker 6: I have never felt anything like that. Yep.
- 42:11Speaker 14: It was like, it has been hot and sweltering all
- 42:13Speaker 14: day long, and we bitched about it, and it.
- 42:14Speaker 6: Was freaking hot all day.
- 42:15Speaker 16: Yeah.
- 42:16Speaker 6: And it's still, like, it's dark already, but it's still
- 42:18Speaker 6: pretty damn hot outside.
- 42:19Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 42:20Speaker 6: And on a dime, like, it wasn't like, oh, it
- 42:24Speaker 6: started to get, no. It turned like that. 20 degrees
- 42:27Speaker 6: in a heartbeat. It dropped. Yeah, for sure.
- 42:29Speaker 14: And I was like, it was, it was like some weird, like,
- 42:33Speaker 14: internal thing like some primal part of your brain went
- 42:36Speaker 14: uh oh it was physical at.
- 42:37Speaker 2: First but everybody's brain did it everybody.
- 42:39Speaker 14: Had that shift of like whoa something's going on everyone
- 42:42Speaker 14: who I brought it up to totally agreed yeah I
- 42:45Speaker 14: was like it was funny because it was the point
- 42:47Speaker 14: where like his set was pretty good and I felt
- 42:49Speaker 14: like everyone was really satisfied yeah I don't know how
- 42:52Speaker 14: much more of it he had to do.
- 42:53Speaker 6: I feel like he got through most of it he
- 42:54Speaker 6: was also.
- 42:55Speaker 15: In the middle of what he said was kind of
- 42:57Speaker 15: the epitome of the whole album based on the feeling
- 42:59Speaker 15: so he was really getting into that song.
- 43:02Speaker 2: And uh.
- 43:04Speaker 15: That breeze came through, and I feel like everybody's heads
- 43:08Speaker 15: went up for a second.
- 43:10Speaker 2: And then they all kind of went, okay, this is cool.
- 43:12Speaker 15: We know what's about to happen, but we're having a
- 43:14Speaker 15: great time. It's cool. And no one started scattering yet,
- 43:18Speaker 15: but the wind came out of nowhere, and it was
- 43:24Speaker 15: like Jaws. It was like that scene in Jaws.
- 43:26Speaker 14: And then someone came up behind Sam Smith, And sort
- 43:30Speaker 14: of put their hands on his shoulder and led him offstage.
- 43:32Speaker 6: Yeah, dude. And the lights went off? And I was like, oh,
- 43:34Speaker 6: what just happened? It was like something. Like in the
- 43:36Speaker 6: middle of a song. Yeah. He just kind of walked up.
- 43:39Speaker 6: Had he passed out, it would have been like James Brown.
- 43:41Speaker 14: He brought up his cape and he took him offstage.
- 43:43Speaker 6: At first I was like, is this? No. Because it
- 43:47Speaker 6: was like one, two with the breeze. And I was like,
- 43:49Speaker 6: something ain't right.
- 43:50Speaker 2: Well, he seems really, really professional.
- 43:52Speaker 15: And so to me it made sense that whatever company
- 43:55Speaker 15: he's with.
- 43:55Speaker 2: Would be like, Nope, you're too valuable. Get them out.
- 43:58Speaker 15: It doesn't matter what the crowd goers know. And honestly,
- 44:02Speaker 15: everyone sort of understood that. Because the next thing that
- 44:04Speaker 15: happened was in a do not take the brown assets
- 44:09Speaker 15: style announcement, across the PA.
- 44:15Speaker 2: Came the promoters or whatever, and they're like, I don't
- 44:18Speaker 2: even think they apologized. They just said.
- 44:20Speaker 14: Well, see, here's the thing. I was talking about this
- 44:22Speaker 14: with somebody earlier. I was like, I was standing there.
- 44:24Speaker 14: I heard it come on. And I'm listening, and I'm like, again,
- 44:27Speaker 14: more power to them.
- 44:28Speaker 6: They put together such a good show.
- 44:30Speaker 14: And the fact that even as this goes down, everything
- 44:32Speaker 14: was cool.
- 44:33Speaker 6: Everything was well run.
- 44:34Speaker 2: Props to the production company for handling that so quickly, too.
- 44:36Speaker 6: That was real professional.
- 44:37Speaker 14: The guy comes on mic, and he said exactly what
- 44:39Speaker 14: you're supposed to say. He's like, head to the exits,
- 44:42Speaker 14: orderly fashion, nobody run.
- 44:44Speaker 2: Quickly but calmly.
- 44:46Speaker 6: He said like six words.
- 44:48Speaker 15: He said, everybody quickly but calmly move away from the
- 44:50Speaker 15: stage and to the exits.
- 44:52Speaker 6: The words that he said were exactly as you should
- 44:55Speaker 6: have said them. No offense to him.
- 44:57Speaker 14: Dude sounded like he was scared out of his mind.
- 45:00Speaker 14: Like there was something in his voice.
- 45:02Speaker 2: That was just probably because they were like, Fred, you
- 45:05Speaker 2: are so good with words.
- 45:05Speaker 6: And they handed him the mic.
- 45:06Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 45:07Speaker 14: Because he just, and maybe that's what he was petrified was,
- 45:09Speaker 14: was he just realized I'm on top of the mic
- 45:12Speaker 14: in front of, you know, thousands of people now.
- 45:14Speaker 2: Well, he was a winner.
- 45:15Speaker 6: So he got everybody out.
- 45:16Speaker 14: But I was like, that's what I think worried me
- 45:18Speaker 14: more than anything at the time was I was like,
- 45:19Speaker 14: you can hear this like quiver in his voice.
- 45:21Speaker 6: And I was like, we might all die right now.
- 45:24Speaker 14: What was funny was when after we'd separated as I
- 45:27Speaker 14: was walking my direction, right after that, this person looked
- 45:30Speaker 14: over and they went, you know, there's worse ways to
- 45:32Speaker 14: die than this.
- 45:33Speaker 8: Right.
- 45:34Speaker 15: There was definitely a feeling in there.
- 45:36Speaker 6: Everybody had a good time today.
- 45:37Speaker 26: Yeah.
- 45:37Speaker 6: Because they were ready to die.
- 45:39Speaker 18: Yeah.
- 45:39Speaker 6: If it was coming, they were prepared.
- 45:41Speaker 15: But I don't know if you've ever been in like
- 45:42Speaker 15: a sort of a mob mentality crowd, like hair trigger
- 45:47Speaker 15: situation like that. But you can feel when you're like, okay,
- 45:51Speaker 15: let's just ride this out. Like here's hoping that. Somebody
- 45:54Speaker 15: doesn't freak out, and it just spreads. I've seen shit
- 45:59Speaker 15: go down. I've seen fences just get torn down. Shit
- 46:02Speaker 15: just gets torn down by crowds when they want to.
- 46:04Speaker 14: There were all these people walking orderly, and then there
- 46:06Speaker 14: were those group of three people that ran past us.
- 46:08Speaker 6: And I was like, that's how that shit's going to start.
- 46:12Speaker 6: You don't start doing that without a reason.
- 46:14Speaker 2: That was kind of punk rock, though.
- 46:16Speaker 6: I mean, again, I wasn't worried about it. It was fine.
- 46:18Speaker 6: We survived. But I was just like, I saw it happen.
- 46:20Speaker 2: I went.
- 46:20Speaker 14: Now, if that chain reaction kicks in, we're all in
- 46:24Speaker 14: a lot of trouble.
- 46:25Speaker 6: Luckily, that didn't happen.
- 46:26Speaker 2: Nobody got hurt, I feel, because we would have heard
- 46:28Speaker 2: about that.
- 46:29Speaker 6: On the news. It was all really smooth, surprisingly.
- 46:32Speaker 2: Sam Smith sold me, man. He was really impressive, as
- 46:36Speaker 2: I expected him to be.
- 46:38Speaker 14: On that, we can go with our Sam Smith tie-in.
- 46:40Speaker 2: Yeah, there you go.
- 46:41Speaker 6: Now, it's not his voice, but looking into it, I.
- 46:46Speaker 14: Was thinking it's got to have to be something pretty
- 46:48Speaker 14: recent because he just came out in the last two years.
- 46:51Speaker 14: On the Pitch Perfect 2 soundtrack, the song Flashlight is
- 46:54Speaker 14: co-written by Sam Smith.
- 46:56Speaker 27: Nice.
- 47:10Speaker 11: When tomorrow comes, I'll be on my own. Feeling frightened
- 47:14Speaker 11: of the things that I don't know. When tomorrow comes,
- 47:18Speaker 11: tomorrow comes, tomorrow comes.
- 47:23Speaker 4: And though the.
- 47:23Speaker 23: Road is long, I look up to the sky.
- 47:26Speaker 4: And in the dark I found, I stop that I
- 47:28Speaker 4: won't fly.
- 47:29Speaker 11: And I sing along, I sing along, then I sing along.
- 47:37Speaker 4: I need when I got you and I I look
- 47:40Speaker 4: around me and.
- 47:41Speaker 1: See the sweet life I'm stuck.
- 47:43Speaker 4: In the dark but you're my.
- 47:44Speaker 20: Flashlight You're getting me, getting me.
- 47:48Speaker 28: Through the night You're the gift of my heart when
- 47:51Speaker 28: you shine it in my eyes.
- 47:52Speaker 4: I can't lie, it's a sweet.
- 47:55Speaker 11: Life I'm stuck in the dark but you're my flashlight.
- 47:59Speaker 20: You're getting me, getting me through the night.
- 48:01Speaker 11: Cause you're my flashlight In my flashlight In my flashlight
- 48:15Speaker 11: I see the shadows long beneath the mountain top I'm
- 48:18Speaker 11: not afraid when the rain won't stop Cause you light
- 48:22Speaker 11: the way You light the way You light the.
- 48:26Speaker 28: Way I got all I need when I got you
- 48:31Speaker 28: and I I look around me Sweet love I'm stuck
- 48:35Speaker 28: in the dark but you're my flashlight You're getting me,
- 48:39Speaker 28: getting me through the night It's.
- 48:41Speaker 4: All my heartbeat.
- 48:45Speaker 20: Light, light, you're.
- 48:47Speaker 4: My flashlight, light, light, light, light.
- 48:51Speaker 28: You're my flashlight, you're my flashlight, oh. I got a
- 48:56Speaker 28: money when I got to the night.
- 49:00Speaker 20: I got a money.
- 49:02Speaker 4: When I got to the night. Thank God.
- 49:12Speaker 2: Thank God.
- 49:41Speaker 1: .
- 49:59Speaker 28: .
- 50:10Speaker 11: You're my flashlight.
- 50:12Speaker 7: For now, why don't you go ahead and get yourself
- 50:15Speaker 7: a flashlight and a can of pesticide.
- 50:17Speaker 14: Okay, so I think we left them hanging. As we
- 50:21Speaker 14: went to the song there, the storm was coming in.
- 50:25Speaker 14: We were about to get killed. We better at least
- 50:27Speaker 14: finish it out so they know.
- 50:28Speaker 6: We didn't actually die.
- 50:30Speaker 2: Oh, no, yeah, we're alive.
- 50:31Speaker 6: This isn't a ghost podcast.
- 50:33Speaker 15: Honestly, that was the cleanest, calmest evacuation of us. youth-infested
- 50:41Speaker 15: music festival that I've honestly ever seen.
- 50:46Speaker 14: Surprisingly well evacuated. It wasn't even a tornado or anything cool.
- 50:50Speaker 14: It was severe weather. I looked up the official status.
- 50:54Speaker 14: Severe weather. And then I was like, it was funny
- 50:57Speaker 14: because they said there was a really sad picture of
- 51:00Speaker 14: Sam Smith on his Instagram. And he was like, his
- 51:04Speaker 14: post was, this just kills me because you guys were
- 51:08Speaker 14: so loud and incredible.
- 51:10Speaker 2: So even as he got.
- 51:11Speaker 6: Shut down, he was kind of a class act.
- 51:13Speaker 15: Yeah, I was wondering if how he would... I mean,
- 51:16Speaker 15: you know, you got to save face for PR and stuff.
- 51:18Speaker 15: But I was curious as to how it seemed like
- 51:21Speaker 15: he would take the whole tap on the shoulder and
- 51:24Speaker 15: duck into the bus situation.
- 51:26Speaker 14: Yeah, he seemed like he was having a good time
- 51:27Speaker 14: and was upset that it got shut down a little early.
- 51:30Speaker 6: But what are you going to do? He is British.
- 51:34Speaker 2: And I don't know if you've noticed, but the Brits
- 51:36Speaker 2: are actually.
- 51:37Speaker 15: talking to a few Brits myself, they, they will quote
- 51:40Speaker 15: that they're polite, polite, but not nice.
- 51:44Speaker 2: We are polite, but not nice.
- 51:46Speaker 26: Yeah.
- 51:46Speaker 14: There's a hard edge to a lot of what goes
- 51:50Speaker 14: on in Britain.
- 51:51Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 51:51Speaker 6: I think, you know, I'm sure there's a few.
- 51:53Speaker 2: Here's to hoping that he was nice.
- 51:55Speaker 6: I'm sure there's a few British listeners out there right now.
- 51:57Speaker 14: And I'm sure you will attest that, yeah, people can
- 52:01Speaker 14: be quite rude in your, uh, your homeland.
- 52:03Speaker 2: Polite, but not nice.
- 52:04Speaker 14: But also polite and, When need be. But I'm sure
- 52:09Speaker 14: you guys know the real story.
- 52:10Speaker 15: I just heard an NPR piece on something about Britain
- 52:12Speaker 15: where it was common to be able to keep your
- 52:15Speaker 15: job in Britain.
- 52:17Speaker 2: Yeah, Britain.
- 52:23Speaker 15: On the fact that your boss was afraid to hurt
- 52:25Speaker 15: your feelings by firing you. It was some survey they did,
- 52:29Speaker 15: and one of the biggest challenges of the workforce, especially
- 52:33Speaker 15: for bosses, was the trouble of being impolite.
- 52:37Speaker 2: And firing somebody so I just think that's funny because.
- 52:40Speaker 15: That's not we do not have that in this country
- 52:41Speaker 15: yeah not American idea it's not how we operate I
- 52:44Speaker 15: can attest.
- 52:45Speaker 14: Alright well I was going to roll into another band
- 52:48Speaker 14: from this weekend and I did Friday night I saw
- 52:52Speaker 14: Gaslight Anthem and I'd heard them a little bit beforehand
- 52:57Speaker 14: and I was listening to them and I was like
- 52:59Speaker 14: man I wonder if they know what a Springsteen vibe
- 53:03Speaker 14: they're tapping into I was like they have to kind
- 53:06Speaker 14: of know right And then I looked up some more information,
- 53:09Speaker 14: and I'm like, oh, they're from Jersey. Yeah, I'm guessing
- 53:11Speaker 14: they know, and it's ingrained.
- 53:13Speaker 2: Growing up Springsteen.
- 53:14Speaker 6: Yeah, I was like, it's ingrained in your DNA at
- 53:17Speaker 6: that point.
- 53:18Speaker 2: Either that or Bon Jovi.
- 53:21Speaker 6: Something in the water.
- 53:22Speaker 14: I mean, they all kind of have that Jersey sound.
- 53:25Speaker 15: That's the question, I guess. If you're going to grow
- 53:27Speaker 15: up in Jersey, are you going to grow up Springsteen,
- 53:29Speaker 15: or are you going to grow up?
- 53:31Speaker 2: Jovi jovi.
- 53:33Speaker 14: But yeah if you're if you're not familiar with them
- 53:36Speaker 14: yeah definitely check it out because this one i'm about
- 53:38Speaker 14: to play is not the most springsteen-esque but listening to
- 53:41Speaker 14: some of them even as they played i was like
- 53:43Speaker 14: man they and and they're obviously very self-aware because as
- 53:45Speaker 14: i was listening they busted into a cover of i'm
- 53:48Speaker 14: on fire and i was like it's funny the springsteen
- 53:51Speaker 14: cover was the least like it did not sound near
- 53:55Speaker 14: as much springsteen like as their own song so definitely
- 53:58Speaker 14: they have They have that sound. So if you're between
- 54:01Speaker 14: Springsteen albums and looking for something else, this might scratch
- 54:04Speaker 14: the old school Springsteen itch. So go check into the
- 54:07Speaker 14: Gaslight Anthem. But this is the song Howl from the
- 54:10Speaker 14: 21 and Over soundtrack.
- 54:36Speaker 4: Hey, wake it up. Shake it out.
- 54:39Speaker 1: Does anything still move you since you're educated now and
- 54:44Speaker 1: all grown up and traveled so well?
- 54:47Speaker 4: Do you still hear the.
- 54:50Speaker 1: Sound of thunder while you lie.
- 54:52Speaker 4: Up by yourself?
- 54:59Speaker 1: And there used to be a movement in the way.
- 55:04Speaker 4: Your dress would wear from your hips someday. Go Friday night.
- 55:21Speaker 4: See if you wanna, you can find me on the
- 55:23Speaker 4: hood under the moonlight.
- 55:24Speaker 11: Radio.
- 55:24Speaker 23: Radio.
- 55:24Speaker 4: Do you believe there's still some magic left somewhere inside
- 55:26Speaker 4: our souls? Like I waited on your call.
- 55:27Speaker 1: And made my plans to share my name. And I
- 55:44Speaker 1: love the.
- 55:50Speaker 27: I found you in hell. You think I could find
- 56:15Speaker 27: you in Jersey?

- 56:48Speaker 6: Alright, wandering around once again.
- 56:50Speaker 14: We've run into not just someone who's been on the show,
- 56:52Speaker 14: but if you're listening in order.
- 56:54Speaker 6: You were just here last week.
- 56:56Speaker 26: Yeah, that was a pretty good time. Talking about the
- 56:58Speaker 26: Comic Con, we weren't too happy with the Superman vs.
- 57:01Speaker 26: Batman coming at us. I have questions.
- 57:03Speaker 6: Possible issues? No, I think if... Anthony, by the way,
- 57:08Speaker 6: is your name.
- 57:08Speaker 26: Oh, Anthony Nall here. That's right. I'm that guy's. You know,
- 57:13Speaker 26: I was talking to somebody the other day and Not
- 57:15Speaker 26: to go back to Batman vs. Superman. We hit on
- 57:18Speaker 26: that already.
- 57:19Speaker 6: But you love it so much.
- 57:20Speaker 26: I love to hate on it. It's really easy. It's
- 57:23Speaker 26: accessible for some reason. But why couldn't we have just
- 57:26Speaker 26: had Ben Affleck by himself as Bruce Wayne in a
- 57:30Speaker 26: movie and see how he does handling that role?
- 57:33Speaker 14: Again, I think that probably would have happened had there.
- 57:37Speaker 6: Not been all the Marvel stuff.
- 57:39Speaker 8: I think.
- 57:40Speaker 14: The Nolan Batman had done so well, you knew they
- 57:43Speaker 14: weren't going to let it go very long without bringing
- 57:45Speaker 14: Batman back. They were either going to hand it over
- 57:47Speaker 14: to Robin from, you know, I was waiting to see
- 57:50Speaker 14: if they were actually going to spin that off and
- 57:51Speaker 14: like maybe not even be directed by Nolan, but let
- 57:56Speaker 14: Joseph Gordon-Levitt like take it over, give it to a
- 57:58Speaker 14: new director so it'll have a different visual style, different
- 58:01Speaker 14: lead and like see if that, in a way, I'd
- 58:03Speaker 14: kind of like that because Joseph Gordon-Levitt's awesome. So like
- 58:06Speaker 14: I'd be cool with seeing what he would do in
- 58:08Speaker 14: something like that. He definitely isn't quite as iron-chinned as Affleck.
- 58:14Speaker 14: He's a little more of a scrapper. But again, it'd
- 58:17Speaker 14: be interesting to see what he did with the property.
- 58:18Speaker 6: Yeah, picture this.
- 58:20Speaker 26: Nightwing starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt.
- 58:23Speaker 6: That I can see.
- 58:24Speaker 26: Directed by Joel Schumacher.
- 58:27Speaker 6: Okay, you might have lost this.
- 58:30Speaker 18: No.
- 58:30Speaker 14: Although as much as I've given him over the years,
- 58:34Speaker 14: I have also heard a lot of stories that the
- 58:36Speaker 14: studio screwed him over. Like, he came in with the
- 58:40Speaker 14: Happy Meal deals already in place. They were like, you're
- 58:43Speaker 14: making these toys, you're putting these references in, your characters
- 58:47Speaker 14: have to do this.
- 58:48Speaker 6: As much as he's a hit and miss director.
- 58:51Speaker 14: Anyway, there was a lot of stuff that was really
- 58:54Speaker 14: out of his hands on that deal.
- 58:55Speaker 6: But I'll still bitch about both of his Batman movies.
- 58:58Speaker 26: Yeah, I mean, it's just hard to imagine the guy
- 59:00Speaker 26: who directed St. Elmo's Fire taking on the Dark Knight,
- 59:05Speaker 26: the winged assailant. That's what we got. Flatliners is awesome.
- 59:09Speaker 6: I don't know what you're talking about. That's true.
- 59:10Speaker 26: Flatliners.
- 59:12Speaker 14: But no, I think had there not been the stuff
- 59:16Speaker 14: going on on the Marvel end of it, had it
- 59:18Speaker 14: just been like Nolan's stuff did really well, they decided
- 59:20Speaker 14: they weren't going to hand it over to Levitt, so
- 59:23Speaker 14: now they're going to go a different direction, you know
- 59:24Speaker 14: it would have been five years at the most.
- 59:27Speaker 6: Before they turn around and do another Batman because it
- 59:29Speaker 6: makes too much money. so it might have been affleck
- 59:32Speaker 6: and i think it would have been a solo.
- 59:33Speaker 9: Thing except avengers made a lot of money and got
- 59:37Speaker 9: a lot of acclaim you know even just from fan
- 59:40Speaker 9: service and a decent amount of critical acclaim so it's
- 59:42Speaker 9: like i think they wanted to put it on the
- 59:45Speaker 9: fast track and be like nope we got to get
- 59:47Speaker 9: this going so we can't just do separate movies you
- 59:50Speaker 9: know they already had superman in the work so they
- 59:51Speaker 9: were just like we could do another batman or let's.
- 59:54Speaker 26: Just cram them all together so I guess you never know.
- 59:57Speaker 26: Maybe we'll get a quote-unquote leaked trailer for a Nightwing movie,
- 1:00:01Speaker 26: but only time will tell.
- 1:00:02Speaker 6: I think you should just make it yourself.
- 1:00:04Speaker 26: Maybe I'll just make a fake trailer and quote-unquote leak it.
- 1:00:07Speaker 6: Anthony is Nightwing. The leaker. Oh, wait, that's a different superhero.
- 1:00:13Speaker 26: Oh, yeah, that's right.
- 1:00:15Speaker 14: All right, so since we're building our soundtrack this weekend
- 1:00:19Speaker 14: amongst all the craziness, as we're sitting here looking out
- 1:00:23Speaker 14: on all the people milling about... buying their tacos and
- 1:00:26Speaker 14: rocking out.
- 1:00:27Speaker 6: And whatever all they're doing.
- 1:00:28Speaker 26: I've seen a lot of sweating going down over the
- 1:00:31Speaker 26: course of this weekend so far.
- 1:00:32Speaker 6: I'm going to hand it over to you now to
- 1:00:34Speaker 6: make your musical choices.
- 1:00:36Speaker 26: Well, after some thought, I decided to go with the
- 1:00:40Speaker 26: movie Dope that just came out. See, it had wide release, what,
- 1:00:45Speaker 26: about a month ago or so?
- 1:00:46Speaker 6: Yeah, something like that.
- 1:00:47Speaker 26: Big hit at Sundance, and it has one of the
- 1:00:50Speaker 26: best soundtracks I've heard in a film in a while,
- 1:00:53Speaker 26: and it's All of these great rap songs from the
- 1:00:56Speaker 26: late 80s, early 90s. You got a Tribe Called Quest
- 1:00:59Speaker 26: in there at one point. And the way that it's
- 1:01:03Speaker 26: edited to go alongside Tribe Called Quest songs. See, what
- 1:01:06Speaker 26: was it?
- 1:01:07Speaker 8: Buggin' Out.
- 1:01:08Speaker 6: That's what it was.
- 1:01:09Speaker 26: They do this split screen showing action happening at two
- 1:01:12Speaker 26: different spots. And it's sensational. If you guys haven't seen Dope,
- 1:01:17Speaker 26: you should all go check it out as soon as
- 1:01:18Speaker 26: you can because you will walk away pleasantly surprised just
- 1:01:22Speaker 26: as I was.
- 1:01:24Speaker 14: Saw the trailer right before, like the week or so
- 1:01:27Speaker 14: before it went wide and it looks really good.
- 1:01:29Speaker 6: So yeah, I'm definitely interested.
- 1:01:31Speaker 26: It's definitely, it's very aware of itself and the soundtrack
- 1:01:35Speaker 26: is as well. You know, it doesn't try to get
- 1:01:37Speaker 26: too deep into, you know, odd rap from that period
- 1:01:44Speaker 26: that people might not have heard of. It's an accessible
- 1:01:46Speaker 26: soundtrack where you listen to it and you're like, oh,
- 1:01:49Speaker 26: you know, that was in a Tony Hawk game. Like,
- 1:01:52Speaker 26: that's how I recognize that, but This.
- 1:01:54Speaker 6: Is how we process music now. Yeah. Soundtracks and video games.
- 1:01:58Speaker 26: That was a Nintendo 64 video game.
- 1:02:00Speaker 6: That's all right.
- 1:02:02Speaker 26: But, yeah, you guys, dope is awesome.
- 1:02:05Speaker 6: Dope is dope.
- 1:02:05Speaker 26: Soundtrack is dope.
- 1:02:06Speaker 6: I knew eventually it was going to come to that.
- 1:02:08Speaker 14: I was trying not to be like, so you'd say
- 1:02:10Speaker 14: the movie is dope. So I was trying not to
- 1:02:14Speaker 14: lead into that. But I figured eventually it would have
- 1:02:16Speaker 14: to come back around.
- 1:02:16Speaker 2: Yo, microphone check, one, two, what is this?
- 1:02:19Speaker 18: The five-foot assassin with the roughneck business. I float like gravity,
- 1:02:23Speaker 18: never had a cavity. Got more rhymes than the one
- 1:02:26Speaker 18: that's got family. No need to sweat, I'll send the
- 1:02:28Speaker 18: oats to gain some type of... No shame in my game,
- 1:02:30Speaker 18: cause I always be the same. Styles upon styles upon
- 1:02:33Speaker 18: styles is what I have. You want it just to
- 1:02:35Speaker 18: fight for, but you still don't know the half. I
- 1:02:37Speaker 18: sport new balance sneakers to avoid a narrow path. Messing
- 1:02:40Speaker 18: around with discs against the size of the.
- 1:02:42Speaker 2: I never have stuff, cause I'm not a half-stepper.
- 1:02:44Speaker 6: Drink a lot of soda, so they call me Dr.
- 1:02:46Speaker 4: Pepper.
- 1:02:47Speaker 18: Refuse to compete with BS competition. I just try my
- 1:02:50Speaker 18: best to, like, go all out. Somebody even said, yo, shorty,
- 1:02:52Speaker 18: back your bucket up. Zulu Nation, mother's last creation, minds
- 1:02:55Speaker 18: get flooded.
- 1:03:06Speaker 17: Ejaculation right on the two inch tape the abstract poet
- 1:03:10Speaker 17: in cockato runs the cape not the best not the
- 1:03:13Speaker 17: worst and occasionally i close to get my point of
- 1:03:15Speaker 17: course so bust the force as i go in between
- 1:03:18Speaker 17: the grit and the dirt listen to the missionless and
- 1:03:21Speaker 17: missings i do work um as a crack for monotone
- 1:03:24Speaker 17: chilling up the jazz so get your own smoking r
- 1:03:27Speaker 17: & b cause they try to dupe me of the
- 1:03:29Speaker 17: best of the bad but they can't do that for
- 1:03:32Speaker 17: it's abstract Original. You can't get your own and that's pitiful.
- 1:03:37Speaker 17: I know I'd be the man if I cold yanked
- 1:03:39Speaker 17: the plug.
- 1:03:39Speaker 2: On R & B, but I can't and that's boring.
- 1:04:01Speaker 18: Yo, when you bug out, you usually have a reason
- 1:04:03Speaker 18: for the action. Sometimes you're doing this just for mere satisfaction.
- 1:04:07Speaker 18: People be hounding, always surrounding, pulsing, just like a migraine pounding.
- 1:04:12Speaker 18: You don't really fret, you stay in your sense, come apart,
- 1:04:15Speaker 18: you're feeling.
- 1:04:15Speaker 2: Of absolute tense.
- 1:04:17Speaker 18: You're soft to another world deep in your mind, for
- 1:04:19Speaker 18: people seem to take that as being unkind.
- 1:04:21Speaker 4: Oh, yo, he's acting stank. Really on a rebuke?
- 1:04:24Speaker 18: A man of the fame, not a man of the people.
- 1:04:27Speaker 18: Believe that if you wanna, but I tell you this much.
- 1:04:29Speaker 18: Riding on the train with no dough sucks. Once again,
- 1:04:32Speaker 18: a case of your feet.
- 1:04:33Speaker 4: In my Nikes. If a crowd is in my room, I'll.
- 1:04:35Speaker 2: Say, Mike, please.
- 1:04:37Speaker 18: Hip-hop is living. Can't yank the plug. If you do,
- 1:04:40Speaker 18: the result will end up kind of low. I am
- 1:04:42Speaker 18: not an invalid, although I used to smoke the weed out.
- 1:04:44Speaker 18: Ali Shaheed Muhammad used to say I had to be out.
- 1:04:47Speaker 18: Steaming on the 50s with the crazy booming back buns.
- 1:04:49Speaker 18: Pushing on them real hard just a week. We'll be
- 1:04:52Speaker 18: right back.
- 1:05:15Speaker 6: We'll be right back.
- 1:05:43Speaker 2: I just love being the rap king of Arizona.
- 1:05:45Speaker 26: And, of course, being the fan of the Big Lebowski
- 1:05:48Speaker 26: that I am, I got to put my two cents
- 1:05:51Speaker 26: in there. I got to see what condition my condition
- 1:05:54Speaker 26: is in and say the soundtrack for the Big Lebowski
- 1:05:56Speaker 26: will always have my heart. I mean, even just opening
- 1:06:00Speaker 26: credits there, like Tumbleweed coming through.
- 1:06:13Speaker 16: Them tumbling down pledging their love to the ground lonely
- 1:06:25Speaker 16: but free I'll be.
- 1:06:26Speaker 7: Found drifting along with a tumbling tumbleweed cares of.
- 1:06:37Speaker 16: The past are behind no where to go but I'll
- 1:06:44Speaker 16: find just where the trail will wind drifting along with
- 1:06:55Speaker 16: a tumbling tumbleweed I know when night has gone that
- 1:07:05Speaker 16: a new world's.
- 1:07:07Speaker 6: Born at dawn I.
- 1:07:13Speaker 16: Keep rolling along.
- 1:07:17Speaker 4: Deep in my heart is a song Here on the
- 1:07:25Speaker 4: range I belong.
- 1:07:29Speaker 16: Drifting along with a tumbling tumbleweed.
- 1:07:59Speaker 4: I know the night has.
- 1:08:02Speaker 3: Gone, that a new.
- 1:08:07Speaker 1: World's born at dawn.
- 1:08:13Speaker 4: I'll keep rolling along.
- 1:08:25Speaker 3: You get the.
- 1:08:41Speaker 26: Chills when you hear that music and it goes along
- 1:08:44Speaker 26: with everything, the mood. It sets the mood of that
- 1:08:47Speaker 26: movie perfectly. And the Coen brothers have always done a
- 1:08:49Speaker 26: great job of.
- 1:08:50Speaker 17: Yeah.
- 1:08:51Speaker 26: Utilizing their soundtracks to either.
- 1:08:53Speaker 6: They curate a soundtrack. They really do.
- 1:08:55Speaker 26: It's a character in and of itself. Raising Arizona, another
- 1:08:59Speaker 26: excellent instance of that.
- 1:09:01Speaker 6: That yeah that music for that one like it can't exist.
- 1:09:04Speaker 14: In any other way like it is the Raising Arizona
- 1:09:07Speaker 14: theme you know it's just yeah.
- 1:09:10Speaker 26: And I know you and I had spoken briefly about
- 1:09:12Speaker 26: it you gotta always throw Goblin in there you know As.
- 1:09:16Speaker 14: Yeah, you mentioned that when I first threw this out here.
- 1:09:18Speaker 14: And I was like, you said it, and I was like,
- 1:09:21Speaker 14: how have we made it this far? And I don't
- 1:09:23Speaker 14: think we've played Goblin at all. Like, I'm a big
- 1:09:25Speaker 14: Goblin fan. Misty's a big Goblin fan. Like, how we've
- 1:09:28Speaker 14: made it this far into the soundtrack show and not
- 1:09:30Speaker 14: played Goblin is just wrong. So let's fix that right now.
- 1:09:34Speaker 14: Which one do we go with?
- 1:09:36Speaker 26: Oh, my God. Suspiria's always pretty.
- 1:09:38Speaker 6: That's kind of your, yeah, that was your go-to. That's
- 1:09:40Speaker 6: what I was thinking too.
- 1:09:41Speaker 26: Yeah, always an easy one to go to.
- 1:09:52Speaker 4: Thank you.
- 1:10:24Speaker 1: Thank you. Thank you.
- 1:11:30Speaker 4: Thank you.
- 1:11:53Speaker 13: Thank you.
- 1:12:16Speaker 4: Which? Which?
- 1:12:17Speaker 1: Which?
- 1:12:52Speaker 4: Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.
- 1:14:55Speaker 13: Pretty much unique. Like, there's a couple full.
- 1:15:08Speaker 4: Cheese that they're in. The Beyond. Oh, man, The Beyond is....
- 1:15:23Speaker 26: Soundtrack there i remember watching that movie back in middle
- 1:15:26Speaker 26: school and it actually giving me an appreciation for sound
- 1:15:31Speaker 26: and film so that i can attribute to goblin like
- 1:15:34Speaker 26: goblin set me up to start listening as well as
- 1:15:38Speaker 26: watching films and they were sort of on.
- 1:15:41Speaker 14: The forefront of that you know it's like at that
- 1:15:43Speaker 14: point you had a lot of old school like you
- 1:15:46Speaker 14: know orchestra pieces.
- 1:15:48Speaker 6: That were your main soundtrack. And that was it.
- 1:15:50Speaker 14: And like, they were sort of that new wave that
- 1:15:52Speaker 14: came in that were just like, yeah, we're classically trained
- 1:15:55Speaker 14: and we're bad-ass, but we're also going to do things
- 1:15:57Speaker 14: a little.
- 1:15:58Speaker 6: Different and weird.
- 1:15:59Speaker 14: And they were kind of on the cutting edge of
- 1:16:00Speaker 14: like being in with all the horror directors. So it's like, they,
- 1:16:04Speaker 14: they did kind of bring something new and different to
- 1:16:06Speaker 14: soundtracks at that point.
- 1:16:08Speaker 6: And they've continued to do that.
- 1:16:10Speaker 26: And I think they kind of pay, pay homage to,
- 1:16:15Speaker 26: you know, the twilight zone, um, The Twilight Zone music,
- 1:16:18Speaker 26: just that recognizable sound where you hear Goblin and immediately
- 1:16:22Speaker 26: I associate it with Fulci, Argento, just those awesome bright
- 1:16:29Speaker 26: red horror Italian films from late 70s, early 80s on
- 1:16:33Speaker 26: through till today.
- 1:16:35Speaker 14: It's bright red because that makes the blood really show through.
- 1:16:39Speaker 14: Even though it's just a can of paint anyway, usually
- 1:16:41Speaker 14: depending on how far back you go.
- 1:16:42Speaker 26: I'd say the brighter the better for those.
- 1:16:44Speaker 6: Definitely.
- 1:16:46Speaker 4: All right.
- 1:16:46Speaker 6: Anything else to pass along? Words of wisdom from this weekend?
- 1:16:50Speaker 26: You know, if you guys are out of forecastle, thanks
- 1:16:52Speaker 26: for making it out here. You know, it's a great
- 1:16:54Speaker 26: thing for Louisville. Stay hydrated. And thanks for having me
- 1:16:58Speaker 26: on again, Brian. I look forward to coming back. These
- 1:17:01Speaker 26: are the words of the day.
- 1:17:02Speaker 6: Stay hydrated.
- 1:17:03Speaker 26: Stay hydrated.
- 1:17:03Speaker 1: In hard times, you best throw away your knickers.
- 1:17:10Speaker 4: And your dimes. Throw them all around you.
- 1:17:19Speaker 6: This is Zach and Shane from Howlmouth, and you're listening
- 1:17:21Speaker 6: to Movie Meltdown.
- 1:17:22Speaker 8: Movie Meltdown.
- 1:17:24Speaker 6: Shane's got a really good movie announcer voice.
- 1:17:26Speaker 12: Welcome to Movie Meltdown, in a world of total darkness.
- 1:17:40Speaker 5: Yeah, there was some guy, there was some guy who
- 1:17:42Speaker 5: was like playing, who was playing with the levels. I
- 1:17:45Speaker 5: could tell whoever was engineering the sound was just utterly
- 1:17:47Speaker 5: incompetent because... Like the guitar would just like swing up,
- 1:17:51Speaker 5: suddenly get really loud. The vocals would swing forward. It
- 1:17:53Speaker 5: was like the most schizophrenic sound design I've ever heard.
- 1:17:56Speaker 6: That's what we're looking for. Yeah. Because ultimately what.
- 1:17:59Speaker 5: We want to do is keep the music fans on
- 1:18:01Speaker 5: their toes, never knowing when they're going to be deafened
- 1:18:03Speaker 5: and when they're going to be straining to hear.
- 1:18:05Speaker 6: That's true. Got to keep them on top of things.
- 1:18:08Speaker 6: So are we recording right now? I believe we are.
- 1:18:11Speaker 26: Are we?
- 1:18:11Speaker 6: Can you check the little dial there? It looks functional.
- 1:18:15Speaker 6: Everything looks functional.
- 1:18:16Speaker 8: So we.
- 1:18:17Speaker 5: So, okay, so that means that, okay. Sorry, I just
- 1:18:21Speaker 5: have to every now and again remind myself to be
- 1:18:22Speaker 5: circumspect when I'm recording for posterity.
- 1:18:24Speaker 6: Is it really any different than the rest of your ramblings?
- 1:18:27Speaker 5: I don't really think so, because I've noticed that when
- 1:18:29Speaker 5: I'm actually careful about what I say, I tend to
- 1:18:32Speaker 5: fuck up more often. Um, in fact, like, you should
- 1:18:35Speaker 5: see me at, like, a black tie event.
- 1:18:37Speaker 14: Oh, God.
- 1:18:37Speaker 6: Walking around trying to be nice to people. I can
- 1:18:39Speaker 6: only imagine. I was like, wow, hey, you've got an
- 1:18:42Speaker 6: old person face. I mean, nice to meet you.
- 1:18:44Speaker 5: I mean that in the nicest possible insulting way. I mean,
- 1:18:47Speaker 5: you look really experienced.
- 1:18:49Speaker 6: I mean, geez. No, never mind. Never mind. I'm going
- 1:18:54Speaker 6: to go over here and drink more. Speaking of insulting, hey,
- 1:18:56Speaker 6: guess who we ran into? Who did we run into?
- 1:18:58Speaker 6: It's Sterling. Oh, hi, it's me, Sterling. It's good to
- 1:19:01Speaker 6: meet you. You're back on the show. I am back
- 1:19:05Speaker 6: on the show. It's been too long, I say. I
- 1:19:06Speaker 6: say so as well.
- 1:19:08Speaker 5: Yeah, because you know how much I enjoy hosting these
- 1:19:09Speaker 5: shows with you. I mean, of course, I'm not hosting
- 1:19:11Speaker 5: right now. I'm more of like a guest type character.
- 1:19:12Speaker 6: You're a floating co-host. Floating co-host.
- 1:19:15Speaker 14: I think that's how I refer to everyone else on
- 1:19:17Speaker 14: the show at this point.
- 1:19:17Speaker 5: Well, I was going to say, because I mean, like,
- 1:19:19Speaker 5: I have yet to meet a friend of yours that
- 1:19:21Speaker 5: isn't a co-host on your show.
- 1:19:22Speaker 14: Well, it kind of comes with the territory at this point.
- 1:19:25Speaker 14: If you know me, eventually you're going to end up.
- 1:19:28Speaker 6: On the show.
- 1:19:28Speaker 5: Honestly, I really think that you're just trying to be like,
- 1:19:31Speaker 5: I think that you're trying to give us something since
- 1:19:32Speaker 5: you don't pay us to be on this show.
- 1:19:34Speaker 6: So calling us co-host is like.
- 1:19:37Speaker 14: I'm waiting until my checks start rolling in, and then.
- 1:19:39Speaker 6: I'll divvy it up a little bit.
- 1:19:40Speaker 5: Yeah, because you know I ain't going in the hole
- 1:19:43Speaker 5: with you on this. I'm already in the hole with
- 1:19:44Speaker 5: too many of my own projects.
- 1:19:45Speaker 8: Tell me about it.
- 1:19:46Speaker 6: I love being an artist.
- 1:19:47Speaker 14: So as long as, yeah, we start getting those huge endorsements...
- 1:19:52Speaker 14: I will bring in some full-time co-hosts.
- 1:19:55Speaker 6: Awesome.
- 1:19:55Speaker 5: All right, so we got about 10 minutes, I think,
- 1:19:58Speaker 5: before I have to run off and go listen to
- 1:20:00Speaker 5: Portugal the Man.
- 1:20:01Speaker 6: All right. How has your weekend been? My weekend's been
- 1:20:04Speaker 6: pretty okay.
- 1:20:05Speaker 5: I've been volunteering with the Alley Theater, which is the
- 1:20:07Speaker 5: theater that I typically work for as production manager. At
- 1:20:10Speaker 5: the Bourbon Slushy Tent, where we have been serving these
- 1:20:14Speaker 5: mysterious concoctions made out of bourbon and Red Bull. Because,
- 1:20:18Speaker 5: you know, bourbon, by the way, does not freeze. As
- 1:20:20Speaker 5: I've been told by a guy... Magical drink that it is.
- 1:20:23Speaker 19: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:20:24Speaker 5: As I've been told by a guy who has a
- 1:20:25Speaker 5: can of nitrogen in his backseat for the purpose of
- 1:20:28Speaker 5: bourbon freezing... Bourbon does not freeze, so it's the Red
- 1:20:31Speaker 5: Bull that's actually making the slushy happen.
- 1:20:33Speaker 6: It's tropical Red Bull.
- 1:20:34Speaker 5: Apparently, they're trying to find a market for, you know,
- 1:20:36Speaker 5: those yellow cans of Red Bull that they sell? Apparently,
- 1:20:38Speaker 5: people drink the blue for some reason. They drink the
- 1:20:41Speaker 5: red for some reason. They drink the silver for some reason,
- 1:20:43Speaker 5: as though Red Bull in any other color is any
- 1:20:45Speaker 5: better for you.
- 1:20:46Speaker 6: But the gold, they stay the hell away from. I
- 1:20:48Speaker 6: don't know what it is.
- 1:20:49Speaker 14: Because we're not pitching it. I mean, I'm trying to
- 1:20:51Speaker 14: get a hold of them now and be like, Red
- 1:20:53Speaker 14: Bull has tons of money to throw at something.
- 1:20:55Speaker 6: Why not our show? Yeah, that's what I'm saying. This
- 1:20:57Speaker 6: could be sponsored by Red Bull. Red Bull, get a
- 1:20:59Speaker 6: hold of us.
- 1:20:59Speaker 5: In fact, it could potentially be sponsored by pretty much
- 1:21:01Speaker 5: anybody who sponsors a soccer game. So, you know, if
- 1:21:04Speaker 5: you want us to, like, host the podcast while wearing, like,
- 1:21:07Speaker 5: those NASCAR outfits with all the different, like, I mean,
- 1:21:10Speaker 5: no one will see them.
- 1:21:11Speaker 6: If they're cool looking patches, you know, I'm on board
- 1:21:13Speaker 6: with that.
- 1:21:14Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, no.
- 1:21:14Speaker 5: But yeah, so we could be like a bunch of
- 1:21:16Speaker 5: NASCAR drivers, except we're doing a podcast. That's what I
- 1:21:19Speaker 5: think it will be at some point.
- 1:21:21Speaker 1: Obviously.
- 1:21:21Speaker 14: I was discussing yesterday what the road to podcasting is
- 1:21:26Speaker 14: looking like the further we get down it.
- 1:21:27Speaker 6: So I think it's. I think it's going to change
- 1:21:29Speaker 6: as time rolls on.
- 1:21:30Speaker 14: I think in the next five years it will be
- 1:21:32Speaker 14: a whole different scene media-wise.
- 1:21:34Speaker 5: Well, you know, I mean, most people talk about the
- 1:21:37Speaker 5: fact that things start out genuine and then they devolve
- 1:21:40Speaker 5: into crass commercialization. We, on the other hand, I feel,
- 1:21:43Speaker 5: strive to achieve a level of crass commercialization.
- 1:21:46Speaker 6: And people are fighting us every step of the way. Yeah, exactly.
- 1:21:49Speaker 5: I mean, no matter how hard we try, crass commercialization
- 1:21:52Speaker 5: eludes us.
- 1:21:54Speaker 6: We remain cutely.
- 1:21:59Speaker 6: You know, sort of plebeian peasants, no matter how hard
- 1:22:03Speaker 6: we try.
- 1:22:04Speaker 5: So I guess we'll never lose our local flavor.
- 1:22:06Speaker 6: Our cast is cute, though. We've got that going. Yeah,
- 1:22:08Speaker 6: we are. Speaking of which, Marlena, I hear, is in
- 1:22:11Speaker 6: Europe right now. Oh, Europe live in fear.
- 1:22:13Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 1:22:14Speaker 6: Because Marlena is on the loose.
- 1:22:16Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 1:22:16Speaker 14: And Marlena is, she's a catastrophe waiting to happen on
- 1:22:20Speaker 14: like a normal day.
- 1:22:22Speaker 6: But now that she's been unleashed upon Europe.
- 1:22:24Speaker 5: I mean, we're waiting to hear the destruction reports out
- 1:22:26Speaker 5: of Switzerland any day now.
- 1:22:28Speaker 6: Yeah. Or wherever the hell she is. I think Romania.
- 1:22:31Speaker 6: Of course she's in Romania.
- 1:22:32Speaker 14: She just posted pictures outside of Vlad's castle, I believe.
- 1:22:36Speaker 6: Oh, nice.
- 1:22:38Speaker 14: And I was going to correct her because I think
- 1:22:40Speaker 14: she was referring to what she was in as a guillotine,
- 1:22:42Speaker 14: but I'm pretty sure it was just stocks. Unless there
- 1:22:45Speaker 14: was something else to widen out and there was actually
- 1:22:47Speaker 14: a blade involved.
- 1:22:48Speaker 6: I think she was just in stocks. I'm going to
- 1:22:49Speaker 6: call her out for that when she gets back. Yeah,
- 1:22:51Speaker 6: I think that's a good idea. Hicks are nitpicky.
- 1:22:54Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 1:22:55Speaker 5: Well, and also, no one looks forward more to returning
- 1:23:00Speaker 5: from a voyage to Europe and then having all their
- 1:23:02Speaker 5: friends correct them on everything they said on Facebook.
- 1:23:05Speaker 6: Well, I mean, the rest of us didn't get to go,
- 1:23:06Speaker 6: so that's all we have. Well, exactly.
- 1:23:08Speaker 5: I was going to say, we have to bring it
- 1:23:09Speaker 5: back down to our level. Speaking of our inability to
- 1:23:12Speaker 5: reach crass commercialization, which is why we're bashing all the
- 1:23:15Speaker 5: crassly commercial movie blogs out there.
- 1:23:17Speaker 6: Yeah, I don't even bother doing that.
- 1:23:19Speaker 19: Yeah, right.
- 1:23:20Speaker 14: I stick with what I do, which is yammer on
- 1:23:22Speaker 14: about movies and music.
- 1:23:24Speaker 5: Yeah. So what else you got? How has your weekend been?
- 1:23:29Speaker 6: Good stuff.
- 1:23:30Speaker 14: We were just, as I ran into you here, I
- 1:23:33Speaker 14: was discussing, I just left Diarrhea Planet.
- 1:23:35Speaker 6: Oh, yeah.
- 1:23:36Speaker 14: Not the medical tint. It's not an actual medical condition.
- 1:23:38Speaker 14: For those of you who aren't familiar, which I would
- 1:23:41Speaker 14: say at this point.
- 1:23:41Speaker 6: A lot of people are.
- 1:23:42Speaker 18: No.
- 1:23:42Speaker 6: I've been hearing about them for like a year now. No,
- 1:23:45Speaker 6: it's true.
- 1:23:45Speaker 5: I mean, it seems to me every time I turn around,
- 1:23:47Speaker 5: diarrhea is given to people by some other kind of food.
- 1:23:50Speaker 5: It used to be, I remember when I was a
- 1:23:52Speaker 5: kid in the 90s, that no one ever got diarrhea
- 1:23:55Speaker 5: unless you were a small child and you ate too
- 1:23:56Speaker 5: many cookies. As a small child, you would talk about
- 1:24:00Speaker 5: it all the time because you were amused by the name.
- 1:24:03Speaker 5: And again, I think that's what led to the naming
- 1:24:05Speaker 5: of this band. Yeah, but now it seems that everyone
- 1:24:07Speaker 5: has a different kind of food allergy. We can't get
- 1:24:09Speaker 5: away from this world of food allergies. Yeah, I was
- 1:24:12Speaker 5: there with you at Diarrhea Planet, Food Allergy Planet. And
- 1:24:16Speaker 5: I got to say, I kind of liked them. I
- 1:24:19Speaker 5: don't know if I'm getting older or if music is
- 1:24:21Speaker 5: getting worse or some combinations. I mean, I know that's
- 1:24:23Speaker 5: the typical old band complaint, right? We do a lot
- 1:24:26Speaker 5: of that old person complaining on this show. But to
- 1:24:28Speaker 5: be fair, I think that maybe they were scraping the
- 1:24:29Speaker 5: bottom of the barrel with the lineup this year a
- 1:24:31Speaker 5: little bit. Because I look around, and this is no
- 1:24:33Speaker 5: offense to the bands here, because a lot of them... have,
- 1:24:35Speaker 5: from what I understand, been pretty alright to see. It's just,
- 1:24:38Speaker 5: I've been looking.
- 1:24:39Speaker 6: Around and I haven't seen any bands that I really
- 1:24:44Speaker 6: care much for.
- 1:24:45Speaker 5: No bands that I really know about or are excited about,
- 1:24:51Speaker 5: except I saw Diarrhea Planet and I was like, oh shit,
- 1:24:53Speaker 5: a band called Diarrhea Planet.
- 1:24:55Speaker 6: I have to go see that. My inner 12-year-old rejoiced.
- 1:24:58Speaker 6: That's right. And so I headed out and I gotta say,
- 1:25:01Speaker 6: I thought they were okay. I thought they would have
- 1:25:02Speaker 6: been better in a bar.
- 1:25:05Speaker 14: See, that's what I was, as I sat there, like, again,
- 1:25:08Speaker 14: I had this goofy grin on my face watching them.
- 1:25:10Speaker 6: I'm like, you don't always get that with a band.
- 1:25:12Speaker 14: Like, usually there's a lot of like, you know, well,
- 1:25:15Speaker 14: depending on the type of band, pretentious head nodding.
- 1:25:17Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 1:25:17Speaker 14: Or like, you know, out of control dancing or something.
- 1:25:19Speaker 14: But this was somewhere in the middle where I was like.
- 1:25:22Speaker 6: Man, this is fun.
- 1:25:23Speaker 14: And I think what was so fun for the audience
- 1:25:26Speaker 14: was these guys were on stage having fun. They kind
- 1:25:28Speaker 14: of seemed like, not that they didn't care about the music,
- 1:25:30Speaker 14: but they didn't care about the bullshit that comes with
- 1:25:32Speaker 14: the music, and they were just up there to play.
- 1:25:34Speaker 6: Well, to be fair, I think... Four guys with a guitar,
- 1:25:36Speaker 6: so who the fuck cares?
- 1:25:37Speaker 5: Well, something to say about them might be that they
- 1:25:39Speaker 5: were a true garage grunge type band. Yeah, definitely. And remember,
- 1:25:43Speaker 5: one of the things that led to... We characterize grunge
- 1:25:46Speaker 5: back in the day, these days, as being this overwhelmingly,
- 1:25:49Speaker 5: obnoxiously bleak, you know, form of music. But the truth
- 1:25:53Speaker 5: is when grunge first hit up, one of the things, uh,
- 1:25:56Speaker 5: one of the things that really made people excited about
- 1:25:58Speaker 5: it was that for once people were just dressing like
- 1:26:01Speaker 5: normal people and they were, and they were, they didn't
- 1:26:03Speaker 5: give a shit.
- 1:26:04Speaker 18: Yeah.
- 1:26:04Speaker 5: They weren't, they weren't like, In some hyper-pretentious electro band.
- 1:26:08Speaker 5: They weren't wearing lots of eye makeup. They were just
- 1:26:10Speaker 5: showing up.
- 1:26:11Speaker 14: They didn't come out in costumes, and they all have
- 1:26:13Speaker 14: their own character that they have to fall into when
- 1:26:16Speaker 14: on stage.
- 1:26:16Speaker 6: Exactly.
- 1:26:17Speaker 5: It was just them playing music about ordinary stuff again.
- 1:26:22Speaker 5: And again, that's not something that was totally absent from
- 1:26:24Speaker 5: the 80s, but it's something that was always kind of
- 1:26:26Speaker 5: pushed to the background in the 80s. Violent Femmes were
- 1:26:28Speaker 5: big in the 80s, but they were kind of a
- 1:26:30Speaker 5: surprise hit, you know?
- 1:26:31Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:26:31Speaker 6: So there was a lot of, and there was a
- 1:26:33Speaker 6: lot of other music along those lines.
- 1:26:34Speaker 5: Like, you know, so they weren't a skinny tie band.
- 1:26:36Speaker 5: They weren't anything like that. These guys had no persona
- 1:26:39Speaker 5: other than their beard doused bar band from Nashville that
- 1:26:44Speaker 5: they totally brought on stage. I didn't love everything they did,
- 1:26:47Speaker 5: but it didn't really matter because they were clearly having
- 1:26:49Speaker 5: a good time, and I appreciate seeing that in a band.
- 1:26:51Speaker 14: I kind of enjoyed pretty much everything I heard, but
- 1:26:53Speaker 14: I have to say that's what I was thinking as
- 1:26:55Speaker 14: I was staying.
- 1:26:55Speaker 6: I was like, this works so alive.
- 1:26:57Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:26:58Speaker 14: I haven't really heard much of them recorded. I wonder
- 1:27:01Speaker 14: what it sounds like coming out of an engineering booth.
- 1:27:05Speaker 14: They work so well as a live band.
- 1:27:07Speaker 6: Oh, no, absolutely.
- 1:27:08Speaker 5: This is the kind of band who you skip their
- 1:27:11Speaker 5: release albums and you go straight to their concert albums.
- 1:27:16Speaker 14: Go right now and check their website and find out
- 1:27:19Speaker 14: if they're coming to your town because you need to
- 1:27:21Speaker 14: see them in person.
- 1:27:22Speaker 5: Yeah, and preferably in a small Smokey Bar. Well, I
- 1:27:25Speaker 5: don't think we have Smokey Bars anymore because Smokey is
- 1:27:28Speaker 5: illegal in most places. That's the way of the 80s
- 1:27:31Speaker 5: right there.
- 1:27:31Speaker 1: Yeah, but.
- 1:27:33Speaker 5: But in any event, though, yeah, so go to a
- 1:27:35Speaker 5: small bar show if you can, and if you live
- 1:27:37Speaker 5: in the Nashville area, don't miss.
- 1:27:38Speaker 6: A chance on seeing Diarrhea Planet. Most definitely.
- 1:27:42Speaker 5: Okay, so I've got about two or three more minutes
- 1:27:44Speaker 5: before I'm going to have to head over there and
- 1:27:45Speaker 5: listen to Portugal the Man, my favorite band that's playing here,
- 1:27:48Speaker 5: which I'm actually already late for.
- 1:27:50Speaker 6: All right, so is there anything you want to play
- 1:27:53Speaker 6: as far as a.
- 1:27:54Speaker 14: We're assembling a soundtrack from movie songs this weekend, so.
- 1:27:59Speaker 6: What is a song that you love from a movie?
- 1:28:01Speaker 6: Song that I love from a movie.
- 1:28:03Speaker 5: Well, since we were just talking about the 80s, I'm
- 1:28:05Speaker 5: going to mention one of my favorite music movies from
- 1:28:09Speaker 5: the 80s, which is also one of the original films
- 1:28:14Speaker 5: I saw when I was a kid, and I was like,
- 1:28:15Speaker 5: this is a work of genius. and that's Transformers the movie.
- 1:28:20Speaker 5: That's the real Transformers movie.
- 1:28:21Speaker 6: The real Transformers.
- 1:28:22Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:28:23Speaker 6: The Michael Bay movies. This is the thing.
- 1:28:25Speaker 5: This is the problem with the Michael Bay movies is
- 1:28:26Speaker 5: that for me, I already met the real Transformers movie,
- 1:28:29Speaker 5: and that was that work of genius produced featuring the
- 1:28:34Speaker 5: cartoon characters where Optimus Prime actually dies in a scene
- 1:28:39Speaker 5: that to this day brings tears to my eyes.
- 1:28:41Speaker 6: It's one of the most tragic character deaths ever. It
- 1:28:43Speaker 6: traumatized kids for years.
- 1:28:45Speaker 14: To this day, if you meet a kid of that
- 1:28:47Speaker 14: generation and bring it up, they'll be like, shut up, man.
- 1:28:50Speaker 5: You don't know what it's like to watch your favorite
- 1:28:53Speaker 5: cartoon character lose all of his colors.
- 1:28:55Speaker 6: Or they just won't speak, and they'll just sit there
- 1:28:57Speaker 6: and nod their head.
- 1:28:58Speaker 5: Yeah, well, that movie was filled with cheesy 80s music
- 1:29:01Speaker 5: that was awesome in almost every way.
- 1:29:05Speaker 6: You've got the touch. Classic. Yeah.
- 1:29:08Speaker 14: Which resurfaces in the 2000 era.
- 1:29:10Speaker 5: Yeah, you've got Instrument of Destruction, which is where you
- 1:29:13Speaker 5: first actually see Autobots and Decepticons fight, and people die.
- 1:29:17Speaker 5: You see Autobots get shot, and they just fall dead
- 1:29:21Speaker 5: on the ground.
- 1:29:21Speaker 6: The afternoon cartoons, you never get that.
- 1:29:23Speaker 14: There's a whole lot of laser blasts flying past people
- 1:29:26Speaker 14: and everybody meets up at the end and talks about
- 1:29:29Speaker 14: what a great episode it was.
- 1:29:30Speaker 6: You don't get that in the movie. No, no, no.
- 1:29:32Speaker 5: In the movie, people get shot and then robot smoke
- 1:29:34Speaker 5: comes out of their mouths and they fall down dead. Now,
- 1:29:37Speaker 5: of course, this was just a cheap ploy to replace
- 1:29:39Speaker 5: some old characters that no one cared about with some
- 1:29:41Speaker 5: new ones.
- 1:29:41Speaker 6: And new toys to buy.
- 1:29:43Speaker 5: But nevertheless, it made the movie suddenly feel so much
- 1:29:46Speaker 5: more intense, especially when... Optimus Prime saves the day and
- 1:29:49Speaker 5: promptly dies. So I'm going to mention You've Got the Touch.
- 1:29:54Speaker 6: Classic. As my 80s movie choice.
- 1:29:57Speaker 8: 80s epic.
- 1:30:02Speaker 20: You've got the touch.
- 1:30:06Speaker 4: You've got the power. Yeah!
- 1:30:12Speaker 1: Yeah! You've never walked, you've never run, you're a winner.
- 1:30:35Speaker 4: You've got.
- 1:30:39Speaker 20: The moves, you know the street.
- 1:30:43Speaker 1: Break the rules, take the heat, you're nobody's fool.
- 1:30:50Speaker 20: You're at your best when the door gets shut.
- 1:30:53Speaker 4: You've been put to the test, but it's never enough.
- 1:30:55Speaker 4: You've got the touch. You've got the power. When our
- 1:31:07Speaker 4: hearts break and.
- 1:31:08Speaker 1: Lose, you'll be right in.
- 1:31:10Speaker 4: The eye of the storm.
- 1:31:19Speaker 1: You got the motion. You know that when things get
- 1:31:36Speaker 1: too tough, you got the touch.
- 1:31:38Speaker 11: You never bend, you never break.
- 1:31:39Speaker 4: You seem to know just what it takes.
- 1:31:40Speaker 1: You're a fighter.
- 1:31:46Speaker 22: It's in the blood.
- 1:31:53Speaker 2: You got.
- 1:31:56Speaker 4: The touch. You got the power.
- 1:31:58Speaker 1: When all hell's breaking loose, you'll be right in the
- 1:32:10Speaker 1: eye of the storm.
- 1:32:15Speaker 4: You got.
- 1:32:21Speaker 1: The heart.
- 1:32:24Speaker 6: You got the motion. You know.
- 1:32:29Speaker 12: That when things get too.
- 1:32:31Speaker 4: Tough, you got the touch.
- 1:33:00Speaker 1: You're at your best when the door gets rough.
- 1:33:03Speaker 4: You've been put to the test, but it's never enough.
- 1:33:08Speaker 27: You've got the.
- 1:33:12Speaker 4: Touch. You've got the power.
- 1:33:19Speaker 16: Yeah!
- 1:33:25Speaker 4: You've got the touch. You got the power.
- 1:33:46Speaker 5: Although, honestly, a close second on that one would be
- 1:33:50Speaker 5: the Unicron theme that was composed originally for the.
- 1:33:55Speaker 8: Movie.
- 1:33:55Speaker 5: Every now and again, I go online and I search
- 1:33:56Speaker 5: out another 10-minute version of that because it's such a
- 1:34:00Speaker 5: hauntingly beautiful piece of music filled with such Cthulhu-level horror.
- 1:34:06Speaker 5: a Lovecraftian symphony about a Lovecraftian robot from the most
- 1:34:11Speaker 5: Lovecraftian of giant robot movies.
- 1:34:14Speaker 6: With the possible exception of Pacific Rim.
- 1:34:16Speaker 14: I think you need to go on that kick and
- 1:34:18Speaker 14: just assemble your Killer Five. We'll bring you back and
- 1:34:21Speaker 14: we'll start with that one. Then you can pick several
- 1:34:23Speaker 14: other songs that sort of fit in that mode.
- 1:34:25Speaker 8: Awesome.
- 1:34:25Speaker 6: I'll be thinking about that when I go see Portugal
- 1:34:28Speaker 6: the Man. Which, as we roll into that, we'll play
- 1:34:32Speaker 6: their tie-in.
- 1:34:33Speaker 14: Again, trying to find cool tie-ins from films that have
- 1:34:36Speaker 14: come out in the last few years with a lot
- 1:34:37Speaker 14: of these bands. There are kind of a lot of
- 1:34:39Speaker 14: up-and-coming bands that are hitting this year. So, Portugal the
- 1:34:43Speaker 14: Man was featured in 2013's Carrie with the song.
- 1:34:47Speaker 6: Hip Hop Kids.
- 1:34:48Speaker 18: Wow.
- 1:34:48Speaker 6: Didn't know that.
- 1:34:49Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:34:49Speaker 6: Didn't see Carrie.
- 1:34:50Speaker 14: Carrie, not bad. I mean, it's one of those I
- 1:34:53Speaker 14: don't know how necessary it was. That's always arguable with remakes. But, like,
- 1:34:57Speaker 14: director did an interesting job. She kind of did some
- 1:34:59Speaker 14: original things. We get sometimes a little too close to
- 1:35:03Speaker 14: the original De Palma version.
- 1:35:05Speaker 23: Right.
- 1:35:05Speaker 6: But still, like, I don't know. It was worth seeing.
- 1:35:08Speaker 6: I wasn't upset that it was made.
- 1:35:09Speaker 5: Well, I'll see it if only to continue to document
- 1:35:12Speaker 5: the career of Chloe Grace Moretz.
- 1:35:13Speaker 6: Definitely. Who is an incredibly talented young actress. She really is.
- 1:35:17Speaker 5: I thought that about her when I first saw her
- 1:35:18Speaker 5: in Kick-Ass. Much like I thought about a young Ellen
- 1:35:20Speaker 5: Page whom I first saw in Hard Candy.
- 1:35:23Speaker 2: Oh, yeah.
- 1:35:23Speaker 6: When it came out, if you recall that.
- 1:35:25Speaker 14: There's a lot of really talented young actresses in this
- 1:35:28Speaker 14: last generation. Like, there's so many. Like, I don't feel
- 1:35:31Speaker 14: like there's that many young actors that are near as talented.
- 1:35:34Speaker 5: No, it's very true, actually, speaking as an actor, as
- 1:35:36Speaker 5: though that gives me any kind of authority to speak
- 1:35:38Speaker 5: on the matter. Yeah, no, aside from Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who's
- 1:35:41Speaker 5: already a little bit older. Like, he's in his 30s. Yeah,
- 1:35:44Speaker 5: he's of that past generation.
- 1:35:46Speaker 14: But, like, all the Haley Steinfelds and, like, the girls
- 1:35:49Speaker 14: coming up that are, like, you know, both of the fannings,
- 1:35:51Speaker 14: you know?
- 1:35:51Speaker 6: Because as good as Dakota was, like, I watch Elle
- 1:35:54Speaker 6: and stuff now, and I'm just like, holy shit.
- 1:35:56Speaker 5: She's just as good. We've even got an Olsen twin
- 1:35:59Speaker 5: who can act now.
- 1:36:00Speaker 6: Oh, she's amazing.
- 1:36:01Speaker 14: So yeah, every actress that kind of comes up and
- 1:36:03Speaker 14: kind of breaks at that 11 to 13 in range,
- 1:36:07Speaker 14: I'm like, oh shit, we've got another 10 years of
- 1:36:09Speaker 14: amazing indie films coming out of her.
- 1:36:11Speaker 5: Yeah, and it makes me happy in a weird way
- 1:36:14Speaker 5: because of course this might prompt Hollywood to put out
- 1:36:17Speaker 5: more female-centric films focusing on female characters who go through
- 1:36:21Speaker 5: a variety of... possible relationships and conflicts, et cetera, that
- 1:36:25Speaker 5: are not connected to their male co-stars. But it also
- 1:36:28Speaker 5: kind of bums me out because, of course, like any
- 1:36:31Speaker 5: young man, you know, I guess I still qualify as,
- 1:36:34Speaker 5: I do look to the films to give me a, yeah,
- 1:36:37Speaker 5: I do look to the films to give me a
- 1:36:39Speaker 5: sense of catharsis in male roles as well. And it
- 1:36:42Speaker 5: bums me out that I don't have any real actor
- 1:36:44Speaker 5: heroes right now.
- 1:36:46Speaker 14: Again, I mean, it's been so overwhelmingly male-centric for it.
- 1:36:51Speaker 6: Yeah, and don't get me wrong.
- 1:36:52Speaker 14: Up until this point, I'm glad that we have that
- 1:36:55Speaker 14: many talented young actresses, and I hope that does spring
- 1:36:58Speaker 14: into acting roles and directing for them. I do hope
- 1:37:02Speaker 14: we get this new wave that continues to bring us
- 1:37:05Speaker 14: really good female roles.
- 1:37:07Speaker 6: Absolutely, absolutely. I'll let it be that way. I'm cool
- 1:37:10Speaker 6: with it. Well, and in the end of the day,
- 1:37:11Speaker 6: I am too.
- 1:37:13Speaker 5: We wind up being part of the generation that didn't
- 1:37:14Speaker 5: produce a lot of great male actors. I can live
- 1:37:17Speaker 5: with that if it meant that we produced twice the
- 1:37:19Speaker 5: number of great female actors.
- 1:37:20Speaker 6: I'm up for that.
- 1:37:21Speaker 5: Okay, I'm going to leave you be here, and we'll
- 1:37:23Speaker 5: hook up again later on tonight and talk some more.
- 1:37:26Speaker 6: In the near future. We will see you somewhere. All right.
- 1:37:29Speaker 6: We'll let you go see Portugal the Man, so we'll
- 1:37:32Speaker 6: go out with hip-hop kicks.
- 1:37:42Speaker 1: I went out to take a walk with my baby
- 1:37:55Speaker 1: daughter Grabbed a coat from Paris, the one I bought
- 1:37:59Speaker 1: her And we got some bread To feed the swans
- 1:38:05Speaker 1: But they were already gone They were already gone Yeah, yeah,
- 1:38:09Speaker 1: the puns are done Fuck those rockin' boys All the
- 1:38:20Speaker 1: hip hop kids Think we give a shit when We don't,
- 1:38:28Speaker 1: we don't, we don't We don't when We don't, we don't,
- 1:38:40Speaker 1: we don't.
- 1:38:43Speaker 4: We don't, we don't, we don't.
- 1:38:45Speaker 1: I'm your mother's son, that fucking And I just stand still, watch.
- 1:38:55Speaker 4: The world go colder. And I can't change, I can't change.
- 1:39:04Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, the puns are tough But those rock'n'rollers All
- 1:39:11Speaker 1: the really hot kids Think we give a shit Well,
- 1:39:14Speaker 1: we don't, we don't, we don't We don't, we don't,
- 1:39:22Speaker 1: we don't.
- 1:39:25Speaker 4: And I got work to do.
- 1:39:27Speaker 1: But you all play with your head in your hand.
- 1:39:39Speaker 1: I'll just play with my head in my hand. I'm
- 1:39:47Speaker 1: not afraid to die. Don't care if I get older.
- 1:39:57Speaker 4: Why, why, oh why don't I? I just take it over.
- 1:40:01Speaker 4: I just take it over.
- 1:40:40Speaker 14: All right, so we are back from Portugal the Man.
- 1:40:43Speaker 6: Now Carl is with me.
- 1:40:45Speaker 3: Hi.
- 1:40:46Speaker 6: They were pretty good, I have to say.
- 1:40:47Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:40:48Speaker 6: Sterling was right.
- 1:40:49Speaker 14: They were a solid band and did some cool stuff.
- 1:40:52Speaker 14: So I was glad to catch a little of their set.
- 1:40:57Speaker 14: As we're rounding things out here, do we want to
- 1:40:59Speaker 14: cover some things we've seen, what we've learned this weekend?
- 1:41:02Speaker 6: Yeah, sure.
- 1:41:03Speaker 15: I mean, the only thing I saw today was the
- 1:41:06Speaker 15: end of Diarrhea Planet, which I guess they were about
- 1:41:12Speaker 15: what I expected. I don't think I knew what to expect,
- 1:41:15Speaker 15: and I was more than pleased. Yeah, I was looking
- 1:41:17Speaker 15: for some rock And they brought the rock. What I
- 1:41:21Speaker 15: liked about them was I heard, like, they had a
- 1:41:25Speaker 15: real kind of generalized, like, it was kind of aggressive,
- 1:41:29Speaker 15: but it was still pretty accessible.
- 1:41:31Speaker 6: Still really fun.
- 1:41:32Speaker 14: Like, very upbeat for the style, like, for the subject
- 1:41:36Speaker 14: matter of the, you know, the hardcore guitar rock that
- 1:41:38Speaker 14: they're doing. It seems like it could be super heavy
- 1:41:42Speaker 14: and take itself very seriously, but they don't.
- 1:41:44Speaker 6: Like, they're so relaxed about it.
- 1:41:45Speaker 2: Yeah, it was fairly poppy, yeah.
- 1:41:46Speaker 6: It's really fun.
- 1:41:48Speaker 2: I was just excited.
- 1:41:49Speaker 15: The way I was watching them was I was like,
- 1:41:51Speaker 15: I'm really interested to see how they mature.
- 1:41:53Speaker 2: You know what I mean?
- 1:41:54Speaker 15: Like looking forward to what is possible with them was
- 1:41:59Speaker 15: what excited me.
- 1:42:01Speaker 2: And I loved their drummer.
- 1:42:02Speaker 14: The one guy without a guitar on stage.
- 1:42:05Speaker 18: Yeah.
- 1:42:05Speaker 15: About 40. He was really effective. I thought it was
- 1:42:10Speaker 15: not overly complicated. Like I liked that, you know. It
- 1:42:13Speaker 15: was real basic, but he didn't seem to be going
- 1:42:15Speaker 15: too crazy, but it was really what the sound needed.
- 1:42:19Speaker 12: Definitely.
- 1:42:20Speaker 2: That was my favorite part of it.
- 1:42:22Speaker 14: I was going to hit a few other non-band related things,
- 1:42:25Speaker 14: just more people. I spent equally as much time this
- 1:42:28Speaker 14: weekend people watching, which I'm prone to do. I don't
- 1:42:31Speaker 14: know how to act with the humans, but I like
- 1:42:33Speaker 14: to observe them for science purposes.
- 1:42:36Speaker 2: I've been writing down the commoners like all. all weekend
- 1:42:39Speaker 2: in my journal.
- 1:42:40Speaker 14: What there were several moments when i'm like people you're
- 1:42:42Speaker 14: just doing it wrong at one point and this was
- 1:42:46Speaker 14: another band i didn't want to touch on i did
- 1:42:47Speaker 14: see hound mouth their set was awesome but at one
- 1:42:50Speaker 14: point our friend of the show shane who was on
- 1:42:53Speaker 14: here last year if you want to go back and
- 1:42:54Speaker 14: listen to him uh shane was just making some sort
- 1:42:57Speaker 14: of random comment and kind of joking the fact that
- 1:42:59Speaker 14: you know there aren't as many lighters out in the
- 1:43:01Speaker 14: world now So he was like, hey, hold up your
- 1:43:04Speaker 14: lighters or cell phones or whatever.
- 1:43:06Speaker 6: Like, he was just being kind of a smartass about
- 1:43:07Speaker 6: it anyway.
- 1:43:08Speaker 14: So then, of course, everybody in the audience has a
- 1:43:10Speaker 14: cell phone, obviously, and people go to hold them up.
- 1:43:14Speaker 6: There were not just one.
- 1:43:15Speaker 14: There were several people that were holding up their phone,
- 1:43:19Speaker 14: but with the screen facing them.
- 1:43:21Speaker 15: Like.
- 1:43:22Speaker 14: if you were going to hold it up to show
- 1:43:23Speaker 14: him that they had a phone, wouldn't you put the
- 1:43:26Speaker 14: bright screen out? Like, otherwise you're not lighting it up
- 1:43:29Speaker 14: and going, Hey, here's my phone. It's like, he's not
- 1:43:31Speaker 14: doing a cell phone inventory. He didn't just want to
- 1:43:34Speaker 14: see what model you have. Like pretty sure he was like,
- 1:43:36Speaker 14: light up your phone, idiot.
- 1:43:38Speaker 2: So I was like several people.
- 1:43:40Speaker 6: I was like, even if you are drunk, you're still
- 1:43:42Speaker 6: kind of an idiot. I'm like, just what are you doing?
- 1:43:44Speaker 8: Put it away.
- 1:43:45Speaker 15: It's probably akin to like when I grab my phone
- 1:43:49Speaker 15: and I'm not thinking at all. I'm just grabbing my phone,
- 1:43:53Speaker 15: and I directly open Facebook. Like, my brain goes straight to, like,
- 1:43:58Speaker 15: what's the purpose of me grabbing this phone right now
- 1:44:00Speaker 15: before I even really think about it, and I open Facebook.
- 1:44:02Speaker 15: So I wonder if people are just turning on their
- 1:44:04Speaker 15: phone and facing it toward them like straight selfie mode.
- 1:44:07Speaker 15: Getting ready to take a selfie.
- 1:44:09Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:44:09Speaker 2: Not awake selfie mode.
- 1:44:10Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 1:44:11Speaker 6: That's pretty sad.
- 1:44:12Speaker 14: There are also, we've got these little walkways in between
- 1:44:15Speaker 14: these sections here that run over a nice fancy waterway.
- 1:44:19Speaker 6: So you've got these little bridges.
- 1:44:20Speaker 1: Nice.
- 1:44:21Speaker 14: They're pretty tight when you have this many people in there.
- 1:44:23Speaker 14: You've got to kind of.
- 1:44:25Speaker 6: Follow the system.
- 1:44:26Speaker 14: There's people going one way, people going the other.
- 1:44:28Speaker 6: It's relatively organized.
- 1:44:29Speaker 14: I'm going across, and there's three kids pushing their way
- 1:44:32Speaker 14: through the wrong direction. I'm like, stop the drop-off, moron.
- 1:44:36Speaker 14: Somewhere my dad got that reference. But, yeah, I'm like,
- 1:44:39Speaker 14: you know, this is just basic common sense.
- 1:44:42Speaker 2: You're in the wrong lane, dudes.
- 1:44:43Speaker 6: I'm like, what the hell are you doing? I, uh.
- 1:44:48Speaker 15: Whenever I notice people doing that, I make sure to
- 1:44:50Speaker 15: check their age in my own head just because I
- 1:44:54Speaker 15: remember being kind of an anti-systematic punk.
- 1:44:56Speaker 6: Eh, it's not punk rock. You're just a moron.
- 1:44:59Speaker 2: Right.
- 1:45:00Speaker 6: I'm like, come on, kids. Before somebody throws you off
- 1:45:03Speaker 6: the bridge.
- 1:45:03Speaker 15: Sometimes I stop and try to look them in the
- 1:45:05Speaker 15: eye and be like, are they conscious of what they're doing?
- 1:45:08Speaker 14: They didn't seem like they were doing it to be rebels.
- 1:45:10Speaker 14: They looked like they just did not know what the
- 1:45:12Speaker 14: hell was going on.
- 1:45:13Speaker 2: That's, yeah.
- 1:45:14Speaker 6: Which happens a lot.
- 1:45:15Speaker 2: Welcome to American youth.
- 1:45:16Speaker 6: Really?
- 1:45:16Speaker 12: Currently.
- 1:45:18Speaker 14: The other thing I noticed a lot this time around,
- 1:45:21Speaker 14: the sparkly little fake tattoo things, the as seen on
- 1:45:27Speaker 14: TV version. And I know it's as seen on TV
- 1:45:29Speaker 14: because I watched Graveyard Girl do a video of it
- 1:45:32Speaker 14: on YouTube.
- 1:45:33Speaker 2: Sparkly tattoos.
- 1:45:34Speaker 14: It's basically like if you had a cheesy armband or
- 1:45:37Speaker 14: tribal or something.
- 1:45:38Speaker 6: But these are like silver and gold.
- 1:45:40Speaker 14: And it's like an overpriced sticker that you stick on
- 1:45:43Speaker 14: your arm. And it's supposed to last for a week
- 1:45:45Speaker 14: or some nonsense, which I'm sure. Actually, some of them
- 1:45:47Speaker 14: were already falling off before.
- 1:45:48Speaker 2: The weekend was over.
- 1:45:49Speaker 6: It's like henna for tweens. Yeah, I guess.
- 1:45:51Speaker 14: It's like a bad, as seen on TV, sales pitch
- 1:45:55Speaker 14: version of getting yourself a henna tattoo.
- 1:45:57Speaker 2: Henna for tweens.
- 1:45:59Speaker 14: Yeah, I was just like, hadn't noticed those. I've seen
- 1:46:02Speaker 14: them before, but I haven't noticed them here as much
- 1:46:05Speaker 14: in the past year. So that was like, for some reason,
- 1:46:08Speaker 14: I saw a lot of them this weekend.
- 1:46:10Speaker 6: So that was interesting.
- 1:46:11Speaker 2: Yeah, I noticed those too. I didn't realize they were
- 1:46:15Speaker 2: expensive stickers.
- 1:46:16Speaker 14: It's an as-seen-on-TV kind of thing, which now is available
- 1:46:19Speaker 14: in stores in the as-seen-on-TV section.
- 1:46:21Speaker 8: Right.
- 1:46:21Speaker 6: It's sad, the world that we live in. Also, a
- 1:46:23Speaker 6: lot of body glitter. And I have to say....
- 1:46:28Speaker 14: On both of them, the fancy shiny stickers and the
- 1:46:30Speaker 14: body glitter, almost equally as much guys and girls, which
- 1:46:34Speaker 14: I thought was interesting.
- 1:46:34Speaker 19: Oh, yeah, yeah.
- 1:46:35Speaker 14: I think a few years back, you probably wouldn't have
- 1:46:37Speaker 14: seen near as many guys glittering themselves up.
- 1:46:40Speaker 6: But, you know, good for them for doing whatever the
- 1:46:41Speaker 6: hell they want to do.
- 1:46:43Speaker 2: Well, yeah, it's a music fest.
- 1:46:45Speaker 6: But even then, I feel like.
- 1:46:46Speaker 2: If you're feeling there's live music, then do whatever you want.
- 1:46:48Speaker 6: I wouldn't have seen that years ago.
- 1:46:50Speaker 14: I think we're moving into new territory where people kind
- 1:46:53Speaker 14: of don't care anymore, and that's awesome.
- 1:46:55Speaker 6: I'm okay with that. But, yeah, just any of the
- 1:46:58Speaker 6: other bands and whatnot. Houndmouth was awesome. So, definitely.
- 1:47:02Speaker 14: We've had half of the band on last year. I'm
- 1:47:05Speaker 14: working to bring them back because, yeah, they are very cool. So,
- 1:47:08Speaker 14: definitely go find more.
- 1:47:10Speaker 6: Houndmouth.
- 1:47:10Speaker 2: So, they're locals.
- 1:47:12Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:47:12Speaker 14: They're semi-Louisville, technically. I think they're all New Albany, pretty much,
- 1:47:17Speaker 14: is what they said last year.
- 1:47:18Speaker 18: Okay.
- 1:47:21Speaker 2: We'll call that local. I don't know if Louisville will
- 1:47:23Speaker 2: call that local.
- 1:47:24Speaker 14: As we discussed last year, I was like, well, we're
- 1:47:26Speaker 14: at war with each other. But we kind of team
- 1:47:29Speaker 14: up because we're close enough.
- 1:47:30Speaker 15: It's like that Christmas where the Germans and the Americans
- 1:47:33Speaker 15: stop shooting at each other and.
- 1:47:35Speaker 6: Just play soccer. Occasionally, yeah, we get together and we
- 1:47:37Speaker 6: play music. But for the most part, we just hurl
- 1:47:40Speaker 6: insults back and forth across the river.
- 1:47:42Speaker 2: We don't talk about it amongst our neighbors.
- 1:47:44Speaker 6: No, no.
- 1:47:45Speaker 14: But if we like you, we'll bring you into the
- 1:47:48Speaker 14: embrace and be like, no, you're kind of part of
- 1:47:50Speaker 14: our town now.
- 1:47:51Speaker 6: It's cool.
- 1:47:52Speaker 14: Regardless, Houndmouth is awesome. So go check them out. And
- 1:47:55Speaker 14: I did see Over the Rhine today, who are very good.
- 1:47:58Speaker 14: And another one that I'm talking to them, they're heading
- 1:48:01Speaker 14: back this way towards the end of the year. So
- 1:48:03Speaker 14: I'm trying to convince them into just sitting down for
- 1:48:06Speaker 14: a whole episode.
- 1:48:06Speaker 6: So look forward to that. So anything else to pass along?
- 1:48:12Speaker 15: No, I only saw the one today, but Should we
- 1:48:15Speaker 15: jump into the clothes but to to my morning jacket
- 1:48:18Speaker 15: should we get.
- 1:48:19Speaker 14: Into that if you want to i've seen them i'm
- 1:48:23Speaker 14: familiar with them yeah what was your take you had
- 1:48:26Speaker 14: not seen them before.
- 1:48:27Speaker 15: It's like uh it's probably like dessa in minneapolis like
- 1:48:29Speaker 15: she's brilliant but we don't care anymore you know um
- 1:48:34Speaker 15: I don't have all of their albums or anything like that.
- 1:48:36Speaker 15: I did notice many people walking toward and away from them.
- 1:48:40Speaker 15: They did, what, like a three-hour set?
- 1:48:42Speaker 6: They did a really long set, I have to say.
- 1:48:44Speaker 2: I melted my fucking face. I was falling asleep, like,
- 1:48:47Speaker 2: in a good way. I was worn.
- 1:48:50Speaker 14: They were lulling you into a sense of security, and
- 1:48:52Speaker 14: you were ready to nap right there on the ground.
- 1:48:54Speaker 2: But then they would, like, they would just, like, blow me.
- 1:48:57Speaker 15: Like, granted, I was pretty smoked out, but they were just, like,
- 1:49:01Speaker 15: they were like waves in.
- 1:49:02Speaker 2: The ocean at night. They just kept, you know... smashing
- 1:49:05Speaker 2: me back in a lovely way.
- 1:49:06Speaker 6: Yeah, there were several times I was like, okay, and
- 1:49:08Speaker 6: they're done. Oh, no, wait, they're back. Oh, and a
- 1:49:10Speaker 6: whole other song. Oh, and another 15-minute song.
- 1:49:14Speaker 2: Like at the end when you were like, oh, they
- 1:49:15Speaker 2: just don't want to stop.
- 1:49:16Speaker 6: They just don't want to... We were like wandering around.
- 1:49:18Speaker 15: By then it was kind of like they were dragging
- 1:49:20Speaker 15: out some... It was like jazz or something. They were
- 1:49:22Speaker 15: just dragging out the drum or something like that. I mean,
- 1:49:25Speaker 15: by then we were walking out, so that was cool.
- 1:49:28Speaker 15: But honestly, it didn't really get too exhaustive. Before that,
- 1:49:32Speaker 15: it was like they would go.
- 1:49:34Speaker 15: Make you feel really cozy and then they come out
- 1:49:36Speaker 15: with the next track would just be like slamming yeah yeah.
- 1:49:40Speaker 14: That's that's the thing like i i've i've been exposed
- 1:49:43Speaker 14: to them so much now i'm kind of numb to
- 1:49:44Speaker 14: it they play them a lot here so it's different
- 1:49:47Speaker 14: if you're from their town.
- 1:49:48Speaker 15: Well i remember when i moved here and i was
- 1:49:51Speaker 15: like you know i was asking around i was like
- 1:49:53Speaker 15: so what's going on with music here and they were
- 1:49:55Speaker 15: like some you know right away someone's like well my
- 1:49:56Speaker 15: morning jacket's from here and i was like oh i
- 1:49:59Speaker 15: i didn't know that i love them but So then,
- 1:50:02Speaker 15: right away, I.
- 1:50:02Speaker 6: Drew the little box in my head. I can make
- 1:50:04Speaker 6: you a list.
- 1:50:06Speaker 15: And I was like, okay, so if I'm going to
- 1:50:07Speaker 15: see my morning jacket, the way to see them is
- 1:50:10Speaker 15: in Louisville.
- 1:50:11Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 1:50:11Speaker 15: And then, you know, I wasn't even thinking about at
- 1:50:15Speaker 15: Four Castle on headlining night, closing night, to their own
- 1:50:19Speaker 15: hometown for free. That's a pretty big, big check mark.
- 1:50:23Speaker 14: I was talking to Anthony earlier today, and I was like,
- 1:50:26Speaker 14: the thing I will definitely give Jim James is, like,
- 1:50:29Speaker 14: for the status that.
- 1:50:30Speaker 6: They are now... He still takes a lot of weird risks.
- 1:50:34Speaker 14: Like, he will be very artistic-minded and just do something
- 1:50:38Speaker 14: really unusual. And sometimes, for me, it doesn't even work. But, like,
- 1:50:42Speaker 14: I will give him credit for taking the gamble and, like, doing... Again,
- 1:50:46Speaker 14: that's a little more artistic than a lot of bands are.
- 1:50:48Speaker 8: But, like.
- 1:50:49Speaker 6: He's a rocker.
- 1:50:50Speaker 15: What I loved was that it was apparent that he
- 1:50:52Speaker 15: was a rocker. Like, the songs I know are mostly
- 1:50:54Speaker 15: from Z, and a lot of those songs are real
- 1:50:57Speaker 15: droney and kind of lowing and... And they get a
- 1:51:00Speaker 15: little new wavy and kind of soft hippie.
- 1:51:02Speaker 2: But, man, he was like.
- 1:51:04Speaker 14: He does go through really different waves and sounds and, like,
- 1:51:08Speaker 14: periods of each album kind of changes.
- 1:51:11Speaker 2: And there was a few moments that were kind of
- 1:51:12Speaker 2: punk rock.
- 1:51:13Speaker 16: Yeah.
- 1:51:13Speaker 6: They were kind of abrasive.
- 1:51:14Speaker 2: And I was like, if I wasn't who I am,
- 1:51:16Speaker 2: I might be.
- 1:51:17Speaker 6: Offended by this.
- 1:51:18Speaker 2: But, yeah.
- 1:51:18Speaker 6: Yeah, for having a lot of different stuff to work with. Yeah,
- 1:51:22Speaker 6: it was cool.
- 1:51:22Speaker 2: It was a great experience, man.
- 1:51:24Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 1:51:24Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:51:25Speaker 8: All right.
- 1:51:26Speaker 14: Well, if nothing else, we want to thank 4Castle for
- 1:51:29Speaker 14: letting us come here and supporting our show and letting
- 1:51:32Speaker 14: us be part of the festival this year.
- 1:51:34Speaker 6: Thanks, 4Castle. Yeah, that was really cool.
- 1:51:36Speaker 14: And, again, not everybody goes out of their way to
- 1:51:39Speaker 14: support our show. So I do appreciate when somebody comes
- 1:51:42Speaker 14: on board, especially somebody as, like, huge in operation as
- 1:51:46Speaker 14: this has become over the years.
- 1:51:47Speaker 2: Kind of a big deal now. Kind of a big deal.
- 1:51:49Speaker 14: But if nothing else, go to forecastlefest.com, and you can
- 1:51:54Speaker 14: start planning for next year and be part of all
- 1:51:55Speaker 14: this craziness yourself.
- 1:51:58Speaker 2: Honestly, probably the more you plan, the better off your
- 1:52:00Speaker 2: festival is.
- 1:52:00Speaker 19: Going to be.
- 1:52:00Speaker 6: Definitely.
- 1:52:01Speaker 14: You can start planning your hotel room super early and
- 1:52:04Speaker 14: probably get a way better rate. You can figure out
- 1:52:06Speaker 14: exactly what you want to do. So, yeah, forecastlefest.com.
- 1:52:11Speaker 2: You want to do another soundtrack? You got another soundtrack song?
- 1:52:15Speaker 6: With that, I was going to go out on one.
- 1:52:17Speaker 14: And I had one only because I think it's maybe
- 1:52:20Speaker 14: the heaviest one or at least one of my favorites.
- 1:52:23Speaker 14: And we hadn't done anything by Cage the Elephant. And
- 1:52:28Speaker 14: I had to say yesterday I kind of caught bits
- 1:52:31Speaker 14: and pieces as I was wandering around. And this was
- 1:52:33Speaker 14: fun because this was my favorite song of theirs. But
- 1:52:37Speaker 14: I also had.
- 1:52:38Speaker 2: They're local as well, not to interrupt you.
- 1:52:40Speaker 6: They are Bowling Green, I believe.
- 1:52:41Speaker 2: Bowling Green, that's right.
- 1:52:42Speaker 14: Yeah.
- 1:52:42Speaker 6: They'll call that local.
- 1:52:43Speaker 14: So this one, you know, you're hanging out. You're usually
- 1:52:47Speaker 14: trying to make your way through this place and figure out, well,
- 1:52:51Speaker 14: definitely go get more water.
- 1:52:52Speaker 6: That's what we've learned.
- 1:52:53Speaker 1: Water.
- 1:52:53Speaker 6: Stay hydrated. Use sunscreen.
- 1:52:56Speaker 2: Water is like 85% of existence or something.
- 1:52:58Speaker 6: In this scenario, yes.
- 1:52:59Speaker 15: That's not a, I mean, metaphorically speaking and also physically
- 1:53:04Speaker 15: legitimately reality.
- 1:53:05Speaker 6: But also where.
- 1:53:05Speaker 14: You're going to get that meal because you've got to
- 1:53:07Speaker 14: figure out exactly what you want. So I opted for tacos.
- 1:53:10Speaker 14: So I'm hanging out on a bench out front. Eating
- 1:53:13Speaker 14: My Taco, listening to this song we're about to go
- 1:53:15Speaker 14: out on. So we will go out with, obviously, their
- 1:53:18Speaker 14: biggest song, but also my favorite, Ain't No Rest for
- 1:53:21Speaker 14: the Wicked. Oddly enough, from the Bounty Hunters soundtrack. Oh, well,
- 1:53:26Speaker 14: you take it where you can get it. Otherwise, I
- 1:53:28Speaker 14: guess that about wraps it up, and I will remind you,
- 1:53:30Speaker 14: Get a Life will provide the soundtrack.
- 1:53:32Speaker 4: I was walking down.
- 1:53:33Speaker 22: The street, went out the corner of my eye, saw
- 1:53:36Speaker 22: a pretty little thing approaching me.
- 1:53:38Speaker 20: She said, I've never seen.
- 1:53:39Speaker 22: A man who looks so all alone. Could you use
- 1:53:42Speaker 22: a little company? If you pay the right.
- 1:53:46Speaker 6: Price, your evening will be nice, and you can go
- 1:53:48Speaker 6: and send me on my way.
- 1:53:51Speaker 26: I said, you're such a sweet young thing.
- 1:53:52Speaker 6: Why you do this to yourself? She looked at.
- 1:53:55Speaker 4: Me, and this is what she said.
- 1:53:57Speaker 6: Oh, there ain't no rest for the wicked. Money don't
- 1:54:01Speaker 6: grow on trees.
- 1:54:02Speaker 20: I got bills to pay.
- 1:54:04Speaker 22: I got miles to feed. There ain't nothing in this
- 1:54:07Speaker 22: world for free. I know I can't slow down. I
- 1:54:11Speaker 22: can't hold back, though you know I wish I could.
- 1:54:15Speaker 22: I know there ain't no rest for the wicked until
- 1:54:19Speaker 22: we close.
- 1:54:19Speaker 4: Our eyes for good.
- 1:54:21Speaker 22: Not even 15 minutes later, I'm still walking on the
- 1:54:24Speaker 22: street when I saw the shadow of a man creep
- 1:54:26Speaker 22: out of sight and then he swept up from behind
- 1:54:29Speaker 22: he put a gun up to my head he made
- 1:54:31Speaker 22: it clear he wasn't looking for a fight he said
- 1:54:34Speaker 22: give me all you got i want your money not
- 1:54:36Speaker 22: your life but you try to make a move i
- 1:54:38Speaker 22: won't think.
- 1:54:39Speaker 2: Twice i told him you can have my.
- 1:54:41Speaker 22: Cash but first you know i gotta ask what made
- 1:54:43Speaker 22: you want to live this kind of life he said
- 1:54:46Speaker 22: there ain't no rest for the wicked Money don't grow
- 1:54:51Speaker 22: on trees. I got bills to pay. I got mouths
- 1:54:55Speaker 22: to feed. There ain't nothing in this world for free.
- 1:54:58Speaker 22: I know I can't slow down. I can't hold back,
- 1:55:01Speaker 22: though you know I wish I could.
- 1:55:04Speaker 4: I know there ain't.
- 1:55:05Speaker 22: No rest for the wicked until we close our eyes
- 1:55:09Speaker 22: for good. Well, now a couple hours passed and I
- 1:55:25Speaker 22: was sitting in my house. The day was winding down
- 1:55:27Speaker 22: and coming to an end. And so I turned to
- 1:55:30Speaker 22: the TV and flipped it over to the news. And
- 1:55:32Speaker 22: what I saw, I almost couldn't comprehend. I saw a
- 1:55:36Speaker 22: preacher man in cuffs. He'd taken money from the church.
- 1:55:38Speaker 22: He stuck his bank account with righteous dollar bills. But
- 1:55:41Speaker 22: even still, I can't say much because I know we're
- 1:55:44Speaker 22: all the same.
- 1:55:44Speaker 4: Oh, yes, we all seek God to satisfy those thrills.
- 1:55:47Speaker 18: You know there ain't no rest for the wicked.
- 1:55:51Speaker 4: And they're like, I fuck.
- 1:55:54Speaker 6: No, I don't even know.
- 1:55:56Speaker 4: I never even look.
- 1:55:58Speaker 1: I never even look at what direction the mic.
- 1:56:17Speaker 2: You want fun? Catch my voice and catch it.
