Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: We are out of the gates on sport and state.
- 0:03Speaker 1: It's hunting with rope presented by hard rock bet. Good
- 0:06Speaker 1: morning to you. Happy Monday. What a college football weekend,
- 0:10Speaker 1: NFL week two, a lot to discuss as we kick
- 0:13Speaker 1: off the week. Chad, good morning to you. Good morning, hot.
- 0:17Speaker 1: Good to be here. A great weekend in Oxford, Mississippi.
- 0:20Speaker 2: What a scene that was start to finish culminating with
- 0:23Speaker 2: that gigantic.
- 0:24Speaker 1: Win for Ole Miss, man. It was awesome. Uh, just, Chad,
- 0:29Speaker 1: as you would say, justice for all, right?
- 0:32Speaker 2: Yeah, look, it was this feeling of a culmination all
- 0:37Speaker 2: weekend when we arrived, right? I mean, all the talk,
- 0:40Speaker 2: everything that you could possibly imagine about a program trying
- 0:44Speaker 2: to prove. This was a proof of concept weekend for
- 0:47Speaker 2: Ole Miss because they had not done it without Lane Kiffin.
- 0:50Speaker 2: Lane Kiffin had a lot of success at Ole Miss
- 0:53Speaker 2: and they're spending money They have a great organizational piece
- 0:56Speaker 2: to everything they're doing.
- 0:58Speaker 1: They're getting really good.
- 0:59Speaker 2: Players to go there that eventually goes on the NFL,
- 1:01Speaker 2: but they still had not seen it. It was a
- 1:04Speaker 2: great start with the run they had in the college
- 1:06Speaker 2: football playoff under Pete Golding. Everything we've seen and heard
- 1:09Speaker 2: from Pete Golding is fantastic.
- 1:11Speaker 1: It's awesome.
- 1:12Speaker 2: It's impossible not to really like the guy. He is
- 1:14Speaker 2: about ball. He is about his guys. He is about
- 1:18Speaker 2: digging down into the trenches and making sure he's got
- 1:21Speaker 2: his team prepared and and he's trying to win football games.
- 1:24Speaker 2: And I think everybody can appreciate that level of honesty
- 1:27Speaker 2: that comes from Pete Golding. On the other side, you've
- 1:30Speaker 2: got the opposite side of honesty. You've got Lane Kiffin,
- 1:33Speaker 2: who's doing a documentary about how he's fallen in love
- 1:35Speaker 2: with Oxford and it's changed his life, and he's sober now,
- 1:38Speaker 2: and he's doing yoga every day. And, boy, sometimes you
- 1:41Speaker 2: don't realize it, but this might be the place for you.
- 1:44Speaker 2: And then the moment he gets lured with more money
- 1:47Speaker 2: or maybe a better opportunity to win a national title–
- 1:50Speaker 2: He's leaving, and not only is he leaving, he's torching
- 1:53Speaker 2: the place he left on the way out, trying to
- 1:55Speaker 2: take players, trying to take coaches, talking bad about them,
- 1:59Speaker 2: probably reporting them to different people and giving other teams
- 2:03Speaker 2: info on them and doing all of that. And it
- 2:05Speaker 2: didn't sit well with the people of Mississippi. It didn't
- 2:07Speaker 2: sit well with Ole Miss fans, and I don't blame
- 2:10Speaker 2: them one bit when you see that. And for them
- 2:13Speaker 2: to have that moment, Hutton, and not only that, but
- 2:16Speaker 2: the way the city and the fan base handled it.
- 2:20Speaker 2: was top-notch. We said last week that we didn't expect
- 2:23Speaker 2: any big incidents in Oxford, and that's exactly what we got.
- 2:26Speaker 2: They didn't storm the field. They were loud. They were
- 2:29Speaker 2: there early. I'm not seeing a bunch of fights happening
- 2:32Speaker 2: in the Grove and people screaming at each other. They
- 2:35Speaker 2: handled it the way you would expect the Ole Miss
- 2:37Speaker 2: fan base to handle it, by offering you a drink
- 2:40Speaker 2: and an appetizer in the Grove and then going out
- 2:43Speaker 2: there and winning and looking like a program that expected
- 2:47Speaker 2: to win. Even as a Vegas underdog at home, They
- 2:50Speaker 2: played that thing out like they knew they were going
- 2:52Speaker 2: to win the whole time.
- 2:53Speaker 1: They treated it that way.
- 2:54Speaker 2: Hutton, I leave Oxford, Mississippi saying that's a big-time college
- 2:57Speaker 2: football program. And there's not many times in the history
- 3:00Speaker 2: of Ole Miss football you can say that. And I
- 3:02Speaker 2: feel like watching that team, watching that fan base, watching
- 3:05Speaker 2: Pete Golding, and watching the hundred prospects, I had to
- 3:09Speaker 2: wait to get back to field access at one point
- 3:11Speaker 2: while they walked all of the recruits through. There were
- 3:14Speaker 2: over a hundred of them from all over the country
- 3:17Speaker 2: there for that game. that they were marching up into
- 3:19Speaker 2: the student section. It was an impressive sight, Hutton. Kudos
- 3:23Speaker 2: to Ole Miss.
- 3:24Speaker 1: So there was one person who felt human and wanted
- 3:27Speaker 1: to remind everyone about it, and there was one who
- 3:29Speaker 1: was not. The one who was not inhuman was Trinidad Chambliss.
- 3:34Speaker 1: That's the difference in the ballgame, was the quarterback for
- 3:37Speaker 1: Ole Miss who didn't follow his coach to LSU. And
- 3:40Speaker 1: then Kiffin postgame, here's Lane Train wanting everyone to know
- 3:44Speaker 1: he's human too.
- 3:49Speaker 3: Of reasons and I'm not saying this because I'll also
- 3:52Speaker 3: have said this anyway if I since you ask it
- 3:55Speaker 3: was just really a lot of emotions of gratefulness for
- 3:58Speaker 3: this place and for the six years went well beyond
- 4:01Speaker 3: football and you know kind of first time coming into
- 4:04Speaker 3: this type of game without my dad it was a
- 4:07Speaker 3: lot and was really emotional but it was not emotions
- 4:11Speaker 3: maybe that I thought I would have felt from all
- 4:13Speaker 3: the you know name calling everything we got off the
- 4:16Speaker 3: bus and everything it was much more just a lot
- 4:19Speaker 3: of gratitude for this place and the people that changed
- 4:23Speaker 3: my life way bigger than winning a football game.
- 4:27Speaker 1: Chad, he's all about the fight promo. He's Dana White
- 4:31Speaker 1: when it comes to college football. And Kiffin, he served
- 4:36Speaker 1: up the main event for the main card on what
- 4:42Speaker 1: was a great college football Saturday very well. He said, hey,
- 4:46Speaker 1: people are in the Grove. We got here early for
- 4:48Speaker 1: the stadium. That didn't happen last year. Thank you. You
- 4:51Speaker 1: can thank me for that. You're welcome. But the way
- 4:55Speaker 1: he handled it, too, I thought was also surprising. I
- 4:59Speaker 1: was surprised it didn't storm the field, quite frankly, just
- 5:02Speaker 1: with the energy around that game itself, the buildup. $ 13, 000
- 5:07Speaker 1: for two nights at an Airbnb. They didn't storm the
- 5:09Speaker 1: field for this weekend? I don't know when you do. So,
- 5:12Speaker 1: I mean, if you made it into the stadium, you're
- 5:14Speaker 1: going to get your money's worth. They did. And I
- 5:16Speaker 1: thought Ole Miss certainly paid it back and paid it forward,
- 5:19Speaker 1: so to speak, with the way they handled everything. Hey,
- 5:22Speaker 1: kudos to everything. Here's my biggest takeaway for the weekend.
- 5:26Speaker 1: Be there in Oxford. LSU and Kiffin represents everything around
- 5:33Speaker 1: the business side of college football. And despite all of that,
- 5:38Speaker 1: it felt like Saturday. It felt like college football. And
- 5:42Speaker 1: I don't know if that doesn't make me feel more
- 5:45Speaker 1: like this is the professional sports. I don't know if
- 5:48Speaker 1: I'll ever feel that way. Standing on the sideline pregame
- 5:52Speaker 1: and having the flyover, the anthem, the pageantry, Chad, of
- 5:56Speaker 1: what college football represents, especially the South and Southeast. If
- 6:00Speaker 1: I didn't feel bad for what was going on on
- 6:02Speaker 1: the other sideline with the whole NFL drama, the courts,
- 6:05Speaker 1: everything we had talked about all offseason, I don't know
- 6:07Speaker 1: if I ever will. So I'm thinking college football, still
- 6:11Speaker 1: college football, always alive and well, and God bless the
- 6:13Speaker 1: Southeastern Conference. Yeah, it did.
- 6:16Speaker 2: It felt a little bit like you could have put
- 6:18Speaker 2: that in a time capsule and gone back 30 years
- 6:22Speaker 2: and replayed that. I know Ole Miss wasn't this good
- 6:24Speaker 2: 30 years ago, but.
- 6:26Speaker 1: You see my point.
- 6:27Speaker 2: Like there's something inherently both new age and timeless about
- 6:31Speaker 2: a big SEC game.
- 6:33Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah.
- 6:34Speaker 2: I mean, being at Funkies the night before the game,
- 6:36Speaker 2: this is probably the same scene 25 years ago.
- 6:39Speaker 1: Before a big Ole Miss game.
- 6:40Speaker 2: Like the Grove and the scene there and all of that,
- 6:43Speaker 2: it really was a special weekend.
- 6:46Speaker 1: Thrilled to be a part of it with everybody and
- 6:48Speaker 1: the people of Oxford.
- 6:49Speaker 2: But there was this sense being on the sideline pregame
- 6:52Speaker 2: that the entire state, and I know there's another SEC
- 6:56Speaker 2: school in the state that we're definitely going to talk
- 6:57Speaker 2: about throughout the week also. But it just felt like,
- 7:00Speaker 2: you know, the song in tech, the eyes of Texas
- 7:02Speaker 2: are upon you. I felt like the eyes of the
- 7:05Speaker 2: Magnolia State were upon us But it wasn't just those eyes.
- 7:08Speaker 2: It was all of America watching college football that night,
- 7:11Speaker 2: wanting to see that game. I got a call yesterday
- 7:13Speaker 2: from my cousin Trent, not a sports fan at all.
- 7:18Speaker 1: To illustrate how.
- 7:18Speaker 2: Much of not a sports fan my cousin Trent is,
- 7:21Speaker 2: he runs a tree-cutting service, and he did work for
- 7:26Speaker 2: Kirk Herbstreet.
- 7:27Speaker 1: At his house.
- 7:28Speaker 2: Had no idea who he was talking to. Spent an
- 7:30Speaker 2: hour in the front yard talking about ways he.
- 7:32Speaker 1: Could do his trees. I'm like, oh, what do you
- 7:33Speaker 1: do for a living? Oh, you know, I cover college football. Oh, cool, cool, yeah.
- 7:36Speaker 2: You know, my cousin covers college football, too, and they're talking,
- 7:39Speaker 2: this and that. And I'm asking him who he was
- 7:40Speaker 2: talking to.
- 7:41Speaker 1: He's like, I want to.
- 7:41Speaker 2: Say Kent or Kent Herbal. I'm like, Kirk Herbstreet? He's like, yes,
- 7:48Speaker 2: Kirk Herbstreet. That's my cousin Trent. Does not know football
- 7:51Speaker 2: at all. He was enthralled with that game. He called
- 7:54Speaker 2: me to say, I saw that you were at that game,
- 7:56Speaker 2: and that was unbelievable.
- 7:58Speaker 1: I was hooked. I was watching.
- 7:59Speaker 2: He said, I don't know much about the coach and
- 8:01Speaker 2: the whole thing, but I was getting bits and pieces
- 8:03Speaker 2: watching the broadcast about the bad blood with him. You've
- 8:07Speaker 2: got that great sideline shot of after the interception to
- 8:11Speaker 2: seal it. In the end zone, the Ole Miss players
- 8:13Speaker 2: running and pointing right in the face of Lane Kiffin
- 8:16Speaker 2: as they run off the field. I just– it's so rare–
- 8:21Speaker 2: in life or sports where it feels like the right.
- 8:25Speaker 1: Script was written.
- 8:27Speaker 2: Because so many times we watch them and say, boy,
- 8:31Speaker 2: you couldn't script that.
- 8:32Speaker 1: Or this feels scripted.
- 8:34Speaker 2: I just think everything that went into it, the way
- 8:37Speaker 2: Kiffin handled everything very poorly, then the buildup to this
- 8:40Speaker 2: season where he's trying to bring in the NFL guys
- 8:43Speaker 2: and making him a sympathetic figure in it while somebody
- 8:46Speaker 2: had to do it and pushing the envelope and nearly
- 8:50Speaker 2: getting LSU supposedly ejected from.
- 8:52Speaker 1: The SEC before they back down.
- 8:54Speaker 2: All of that stuff leading up to this week, early
- 8:57Speaker 2: in the season, week three, to have Ole Miss win
- 9:01Speaker 2: that way, where Pete Golding outcoached Lane Kiffin. Pete Golding
- 9:06Speaker 2: looked like the guy who knew more of Kiffin's tendencies
- 9:08Speaker 2: than the other way around. And you got, you're right too, Hunt,
- 9:11Speaker 2: you nailed it. You got Superman at quarterback. And Trinidad Chambliss.
- 9:14Speaker 1: Yeah. I mean, what an incredible. Another thing, my.
- 9:16Speaker 2: Cousin Trent, who doesn't know football, was bringing it up
- 9:19Speaker 2: and said, boy, that guy's good. I don't know anything
- 9:21Speaker 2: about him, but he's good.
- 9:22Speaker 1: He's a dude.
- 9:23Speaker 2: And he performed that way all night. Just terrific game.
- 9:27Speaker 2: Big time moment for Ole Miss. They'll have that forever.
- 9:30Speaker 2: You know, that's another great thing about college football versus
- 9:34Speaker 2: the NFL that we talk about. And NFL fans have
- 9:36Speaker 2: the same feeling at times, too. But you'll never be
- 9:39Speaker 2: able to take that away from an Ole Miss fan,
- 9:40Speaker 2: whether they're watching on TV or Whether they're watching at
- 9:43Speaker 2: a bar on the square or they're in that stadium,
- 9:46Speaker 2: that's just a moment that Ole Miss people will have forever.
- 9:49Speaker 2: The first chance they got against their old coach Lane
- 9:52Speaker 2: Kiffin on a Saturday night in Oxford, they won.
- 9:58Speaker 1: They won the game. Incredible. And we talked about this
- 10:01Speaker 1: a bit going into the game itself. The storyline was
- 10:06Speaker 1: on LSU. It was on Kiffin. We knew that. But
- 10:11Speaker 1: it was the coach and the quarterback who we weren't
- 10:13Speaker 1: talking about That stepped up to the moment. We also
- 10:17Speaker 1: discussed on Friday with Walker Jones, hey, you know, the approach. LSU,
- 10:24Speaker 1: you had the injury report. You have the quarterback with
- 10:27Speaker 1: the shoulder, all these different things. And then you have
- 10:31Speaker 1: trying to not block out. I think they embraced the talk,
- 10:36Speaker 1: but they didn't jerk back. You know, like trying to
- 10:40Speaker 1: not be distracted by embracing the distractions and It's not
- 10:44Speaker 1: like they played into the hype. I thought maybe they
- 10:48Speaker 1: were a bit too quiet in some of this because
- 10:52Speaker 1: then it just becomes overwhelming. But they handled it perfectly
- 10:56Speaker 1: for who they are and what they wanted to represent.
- 10:58Speaker 1: Job well done. And look at Pete Goley's record. I mean,
- 11:02Speaker 1: look at the numbers here with what he's doing. First
- 11:05Speaker 1: coach in college football history to beat four ranked teams
- 11:08Speaker 1: in his first six games. He benefits from that by
- 11:12Speaker 1: going to the playoff. whenever he's doing all this. But
- 11:16Speaker 1: there's Pete Goldie. And then once again, Lane Kiffin, he's
- 11:20Speaker 1: yet to.
- 11:21Speaker 2: Crack the top 10 when it comes to a victory, Chad.
- 11:25Speaker 2: Let's have the Lane Kiffin discussion here. That's an insane stat.
- 11:30Speaker 2: He's not slipped up and beat one top 10 team
- 11:32Speaker 2: in his entire career. He was a coach at Tennessee
- 11:35Speaker 2: for only a year. He was a coach at USC,
- 11:38Speaker 2: got himself fired. He was coaching Ole Miss, and now
- 11:41Speaker 2: he's at LSU. We have to allow for the possibility
- 11:44Speaker 2: that where Lane Kiffin needs to be is where he
- 11:47Speaker 2: was before.
- 11:48Speaker 1: At a place where he can go overachieve, like Ole Miss.
- 11:52Speaker 1: Because the last.
- 11:53Speaker 2: Time he got handed the keys to a Ferrari, now granted,
- 11:56Speaker 2: when he took over at USC, they got levied with
- 11:58Speaker 2: the NCAA issues right after he took the job. But
- 12:02Speaker 2: that's still a Ferrari. That's the place he wanted to
- 12:04Speaker 2: go to. He said, it's my dream job, having coached
- 12:06Speaker 2: there before under Pete Carroll. Pete Golding, now I know
- 12:11Speaker 2: opportunity is what it was, but when he took over,
- 12:14Speaker 2: how many top tens did he beat? At least two, right?
- 12:16Speaker 2: Or one in the college football playoff. When he beat Georgia,
- 12:20Speaker 2: now he beats LSU in the first chance. That's just
- 12:24Speaker 2: a wild stat that in all the years of coaching
- 12:27Speaker 2: for Lane Kiffin, yet to get a top ten team.
- 12:30Speaker 2: I'm not saying Lane Kiffin's a bad coach or anything
- 12:32Speaker 2: like that. It blows my mind when I see that
- 12:35Speaker 2: what Golding's already accomplished And what Kiffin's yet to accomplish.
- 12:39Speaker 1: So, he had two on the road. And winning on
- 12:43Speaker 1: the road, Chad, we talked about this over the weekend, too.
- 12:45Speaker 1: Winning on the road is tough anyway. But Kiffin rode
- 12:48Speaker 1: record versus top ten teams. He had two against Tennessee, Florida,
- 12:52Speaker 1: and Alabama, both losses. Now, FAU, this is kind of
- 12:56Speaker 1: against his record, too. FAU lost to Wisconsin, Oklahoma, and
- 13:01Speaker 1: Ohio State. Alabama, two games against Georgia. He had Alabama
- 13:07Speaker 1: two games against Georgia. And I don't know why, but
- 13:09Speaker 1: the Alabama game is the game we went to. When
- 13:13Speaker 1: he's coming back with the unbeaten Ole Miss Rebels, that's
- 13:15Speaker 1: when I compared Bryant-Denny Stadium to going to church. Because
- 13:19Speaker 1: they showed up and just acted like it was just
- 13:21Speaker 1: another Saturday that weekend. And then most recently, LSU on
- 13:25Speaker 1: the road against Ole Miss. I will say this about
- 13:29Speaker 1: Kiffin though, man. He doesn't want to be an overachiever.
- 13:35Speaker 1: He bounces around too much for that. Having been to
- 13:40Speaker 1: Oxford just one time now, if you want to overachieve,
- 13:43Speaker 1: if you're lane trained, that's exactly where you stay. You're
- 13:48Speaker 1: having documentaries made about you about how you changed your
- 13:50Speaker 1: life in Oxford. Instead, he embraces the villain role. Coming back,
- 13:57Speaker 1: he's saying he's human too. Oxford handled it perfectly. There's
- 14:04Speaker 1: a charm about Oxford, Mississippi that is hard to describe.
- 14:07Speaker 1: I compared it to Augusta, Georgia. TV doesn't do it justice.
- 14:12Speaker 1: You've got to go for yourself and see the Grove
- 14:14Speaker 1: and take it in.
- 14:15Speaker 2: You've got the quote in Gus Wilson's column about the
- 14:19Speaker 2: Oxford trip with that great line about it's similar to
- 14:22Speaker 2: Augusta National. The spot we had perched over the Grove
- 14:26Speaker 2: a little bit, a lot of you just see the
- 14:28Speaker 2: sea of tents. You also see how easy it is
- 14:31Speaker 2: to get completely lost. in that maze of tailgates. Once
- 14:35Speaker 2: you get in, it's hard to get out. You almost
- 14:37Speaker 2: have to drop a pin for somebody to find you
- 14:40Speaker 2: or try to worm your way out of there to
- 14:42Speaker 2: find the stadium. It's not easy, but incredible setup. JT
- 14:45Speaker 2: lets us know, Kiffin now 1-7 when facing a ranked
- 14:49Speaker 2: opponent as a top 10 team in his head coaching career.
- 14:52Speaker 2: His only win was last year, No. 8 Ole Miss
- 14:55Speaker 2: beat No.
- 14:55Speaker 1: 13 Oklahoma 34-26.
- 14:56Speaker 2: So even as a top 10 team, He's not had
- 15:02Speaker 2: success against other ranked opponents. And Brooks lets us know
- 15:06Speaker 2: Lane beat number 11 Texas A & M at one
- 15:09Speaker 2: point at Ole Miss. That's the closest he's ever come
- 15:12Speaker 2: to beating a top 10 team. I mean, there's no
- 15:17Speaker 2: other thing that Lane Kiffin could be than overrated because
- 15:21Speaker 2: he's not underrated because he gets more talk than anybody
- 15:23Speaker 2: else in college football. So he could only be overrated.
- 15:27Speaker 2: But based on these numbers, he is overrated. as a coach,
- 15:31Speaker 2: because he does not win that gigantic game against a
- 15:33Speaker 2: top 10 team. Now, at Ole Miss, when he was
- 15:37Speaker 2: there at FAU and all these places, it's not easy
- 15:39Speaker 2: to beat top 10 teams, right? Most coaches in college
- 15:42Speaker 2: sports don't have a great record against top 10 teams
- 15:45Speaker 2: because they're the best of the best. I understand that.
- 15:47Speaker 2: But to not get one is nuts. And for Ole
- 15:51Speaker 2: Miss to take full advantage of that spotlight, and deliver
- 15:55Speaker 2: it in a way that was fun, that was exciting,
- 15:58Speaker 2: and that was expected. Because them not storming the field
- 16:02Speaker 2: and the way they treated it, it was a true
- 16:05Speaker 2: showcase for the Ole Miss Rebels, and it was 10
- 16:08Speaker 2: out of 10. Great job, Oxford. Great job, Pete Golding.
- 16:11Speaker 2: Great job, your team. Trinidad Chambliss had to come back
- 16:16Speaker 2: and apologize for dropping the F-bomb after praising God in
- 16:20Speaker 2: his postgame, getting a little emotional with a hottie bleeping
- 16:23Speaker 2: toddy at the end of it. But everything was just
- 16:26Speaker 2: set up to be this big moment of culmination for
- 16:29Speaker 2: that program and to prove it. And they delivered. They
- 16:33Speaker 2: proved it. This is a sustainable thing at Ole Miss.
- 16:36Speaker 2: I believe that now, having been there and having watched
- 16:38Speaker 2: Pete Golding and how.
- 16:39Speaker 1: Good he's going to be as a head coach. Speaking
- 16:42Speaker 1: of Kiffin's record against those top 10 opponents, he's going
- 16:44Speaker 1: to have to wait a while, even at LSU, to
- 16:47Speaker 1: have a next opportunity. Until November right now, when they
- 16:51Speaker 1: would face another top 10 opponent at LSU, which would
- 16:54Speaker 1: be Alabama, Texas, or maybe even Tennessee coming up. Because
- 17:00Speaker 1: they've got A & M.
- 17:00Speaker 2: If Tennessee wins this weekend, it will be Tennessee as
- 17:02Speaker 2: a top 10 team more than likely at that moment.
- 17:04Speaker 1: They would have had A & M as a part
- 17:07Speaker 1: of that. But that's a part of the SEC weekend
- 17:11Speaker 1: we recap when we come back. It was college football
- 17:14Speaker 1: on a Saturday that is the charm of why we
- 17:17Speaker 1: love the fall and the game of football. We discuss
- 17:20Speaker 1: more of that straight ahead here on How to Withdraw.

- 18:21Speaker 2: a shout-out to Oxford. Dixieland Delight Friday night was a
- 18:25Speaker 2: blast at Funkies. Great job by Gus and Brecca, who
- 18:29Speaker 2: joined us from the Sport and State staff.
- 18:32Speaker 1: Fantastic job there. Lee Harris... Walker Jones, Kyle Campbell, we
- 18:38Speaker 1: thank you for the hospitality. Chad, through and through, it
- 18:44Speaker 1: was a great trip, and it's just the beginning for
- 18:46Speaker 1: sport and state coverage on Saturdays.
- 18:49Speaker 2: We didn't even get into the Katy Perry stories from Lee.
- 18:53Speaker 2: I was thinking about after the show, all the stuff Lee,
- 18:56Speaker 2: the owner of Funkies, told us beforehand about that bar.
- 18:59Speaker 1: So I'm going to save that.
- 19:00Speaker 2: I don't want to give that away right now because
- 19:03Speaker 2: we want to go back to Oxford after this weekend
- 19:04Speaker 2: at some point. So our next trip to Oxford, we're
- 19:06Speaker 2: absolutely going back to Funky's and doing the show there again.
- 19:10Speaker 2: And then we'll tell the– that's a tease for our
- 19:12Speaker 2: future trip to Oxford because this Ole Miss team is
- 19:14Speaker 2: probably good enough where we're going to be back at
- 19:16Speaker 2: some point over the next few years. And we'll tell
- 19:19Speaker 2: that story then. But, yes, Lee Harris, amazing hospitality. Walker Jones,
- 19:24Speaker 2: getting it done with that program, helping us out a lot.
- 19:27Speaker 2: And as you mentioned, Kyle Campbell also. A terrific weekend,
- 19:30Speaker 2: terrific scene at Funky's. And to Drunken Drew, well, let's say–
- 19:35Speaker 2: Everything we discussed with him was out of love. We
- 19:38Speaker 2: love the guy. People think we're making fun of him.
- 19:41Speaker 2: I wouldn't have been that well off being that age
- 19:43Speaker 2: and being Drew. I'll be the first to admit, that
- 19:46Speaker 2: guy was crushing it. um also he was wandering up
- 19:49Speaker 2: into our set and talking to us which was great
- 19:52Speaker 2: and hilarious but yes at some point we had to
- 19:54Speaker 2: remove him you know from the area but old miss
- 19:57Speaker 2: fans are acting like we didn't like drew hey you
- 20:00Speaker 2: tease your family When you're at Oxford Hut and your family,
- 20:03Speaker 2: we felt like family while there. We were not criticizing
- 20:07Speaker 2: Drew or making fun of him at all.
- 20:09Speaker 1: He's doing great. Drew's doing just fine.
- 20:11Speaker 2: But we tease like brothers when we're in a familial setting,
- 20:14Speaker 2: and that's what Oxford is, your family.
- 20:16Speaker 1: When in Oxford, your family. He was great. And there's
- 20:21Speaker 1: a background to it as well. If you know the context,
- 20:24Speaker 1: I think it's a lot more entertaining because Brecka and
- 20:28Speaker 1: Gus had been out on the streets of Oxford. And
- 20:31Speaker 1: we had asked them, we'd asked Brecken, the drunkest fan,
- 20:35Speaker 1: and she's like, oh, there he is. That's who we
- 20:37Speaker 1: just interviewed outside. And so we had him stumble upon us.
- 20:42Speaker 2: Well, it's also, someone was accusing us of just going
- 20:47Speaker 2: and sabotaging people candid camera style. Like behind us, like
- 20:51Speaker 2: you just found someone who just did five shots.
- 20:53Speaker 1: And I'm like, no. He came to us.
- 20:55Speaker 2: First off, he came to Brecca and Gus. Brecca ran
- 20:58Speaker 2: back the footage. And Drew walked up to them in
- 21:01Speaker 2: the middle of an interview. Just walked in the middle
- 21:03Speaker 2: of there. He was interviewing some ladies on the street.
- 21:06Speaker 2: And Drew walked in and started getting interviewed there. He
- 21:08Speaker 2: kind of roamed into our set. Then he comes back
- 21:10Speaker 2: for the second segment. And he's back in there. No,
- 21:13Speaker 2: but all seriousness, it was all in good fun. We
- 21:16Speaker 2: love Drew. We love the scene at Funky's. It was
- 21:19Speaker 2: an amazing time. So thanks to everybody. If you watch
- 21:21Speaker 2: the show on Friday night, if you were there at
- 21:23Speaker 2: Funky's incredible scene and we're going to be back on
- 21:27Speaker 2: the road this Friday in Knoxville, Tennessee and Alabama, we're
- 21:32Speaker 2: going to be following ESPN college game day for a
- 21:34Speaker 2: second straight week because that's where game day is going
- 21:36Speaker 2: to be also. So I think we're going to see
- 21:38Speaker 2: a lot of the college. There's a lot of big
- 21:40Speaker 2: top 25 matchups this next weekend, but a lot of
- 21:43Speaker 2: the college football world that descended upon Oxford is is
- 21:46Speaker 2: going to descend upon Knoxville this next week. But we've
- 21:49Speaker 2: got plenty of time to get to that game and others.
- 21:51Speaker 2: It was a big-time weekend in the SEC. Just while
- 21:55Speaker 2: you're bringing up Tennessee, Texas, let me bring up these guys.
- 21:58Speaker 2: I saw Keith Bullock and Albert Hainsworth last night. And
- 22:01Speaker 2: they wanted me to say hello to you. They're going
- 22:03Speaker 2: to be in Knoxville. And I told them where the
- 22:05Speaker 2: setup would be. So reach out to them for.
- 22:09Speaker 1: For what will be a fun night, even on that Friday,
- 22:12Speaker 1: for Dixieland Delight Friday night as well in K-Town. The
- 22:18Speaker 1: only downside is it's the noon Eastern kickoff, but it's
- 22:23Speaker 1: going to be a great atmosphere at Neyland. For some reason,
- 22:26Speaker 1: they love giving the night games to LSU, and it's LSU,
- 22:29Speaker 1: Texas A & M, both teams coming off a loss
- 22:32Speaker 1: that will be under the lights in Baton Rouge.
- 22:35Speaker 2: By the way, it feels like an elimination game now.
- 22:38Speaker 2: for those two teams, right? This early in the year,
- 22:40Speaker 2: I mean, whoever loses that game, it's out of sight,
- 22:42Speaker 2: out of mind with two losses at this.
- 22:44Speaker 1: Point, right? And then Ole Miss-Florida is kind of a
- 22:49Speaker 1: driver's seat type game based on what we saw. And
- 22:52Speaker 1: it's not.
- 22:52Speaker 2: I'm not saying when the season's over, they lose. They
- 22:55Speaker 2: could still easily make the playoff with two losses. But
- 22:57Speaker 2: it just feels that way that early. Someone's going to
- 23:00Speaker 2: go to 0-2 in the SEC. And it won't feel
- 23:03Speaker 2: like this when we expand the playoff, you know? That's
- 23:06Speaker 2: the other part of it. It does still feel way more–
- 23:10Speaker 2: it's closer to the NFL than it's ever been.
- 23:12Speaker 1: Like, even with LSU's loss, it's.
- 23:14Speaker 2: Not– I remember for years and years, like, you go
- 23:18Speaker 2: to a game and you leave the big game and
- 23:20Speaker 2: the team that lost, it's like, well, it's over, you know,
- 23:23Speaker 2: with a 14 playoff even, or it's close to over
- 23:26Speaker 2: already for that team. I don't get that sense about
- 23:28Speaker 2: LSU at all, leaving that game. I'm not burying them
- 23:31Speaker 2: for dead or anything. It's just– It feels like a
- 23:34Speaker 2: big atmosphere and moment and a huge win for Ole Miss,
- 23:36Speaker 2: but it's also not a death sentence if you.
- 23:38Speaker 1: Lose a game like that. No. Death sentence for NC State,
- 23:43Speaker 1: losing a game the way they did. Let's jump right
- 23:46Speaker 1: into this, man. We're watching this at the tailgate in Oxford. Thankfully,
- 23:52Speaker 1: I don't know how they were able to get YouTube
- 23:55Speaker 1: TV at these tailgates, Chad, but we barely had phone service.
- 24:01Speaker 1: But we're watching four games at a time at this
- 24:03Speaker 1: one tailgate. Thank you to those who are hosting with
- 24:06Speaker 1: Beer League. What an all-time finish. And I leave that going.
- 24:16Speaker 1: What malpractice is this? We're thinking, okay, they took the safety.
- 24:21Speaker 1: They're going to be down by one. And then all
- 24:23Speaker 1: of a sudden you're like, no, no, no. There was
- 24:24Speaker 1: a fumble there. They fumbled the football. and then the
- 24:28Speaker 1: replays of the drama with that play, and knowing that
- 24:31Speaker 1: you can clearly see he's told to watch the clock
- 24:34Speaker 1: instead of watch the defenders coming at him with the
- 24:40Speaker 1: bearing down on him in the end zone. Coaching malpractice
- 24:44Speaker 1: and setting this up is where we go. And unfortunately,
- 24:48Speaker 1: it'll be a play that is more remembered as an Orlovsky,
- 24:52Speaker 1: which would have benefited them in this case. Then it
- 24:55Speaker 1: is a coach's decision that set this up for just
- 24:59Speaker 1: disaster for NC State. And here is Vanderbilt, 3-0 somehow,
- 25:06Speaker 1: despite trailing in that game. Jared Curtis throws the pick
- 25:09Speaker 1: on the drive right before that, Chad. And then they
- 25:12Speaker 1: have this miraculous win. It's the Music City Miracle times
- 25:17Speaker 1: two with what happened, although not many were there to
- 25:20Speaker 1: see it. Yeah, we'll get to that.
- 25:22Speaker 2: We talk Titans a little bit later in terms of
- 25:24Speaker 2: the crowd. Positives for Vanderbilt in this game. Jared Kurtz,
- 25:27Speaker 2: the second half was great. He was dropping dimes. He
- 25:31Speaker 2: had one touchdown thrown like that. That's an NFL pass
- 25:34Speaker 2: where he dropped it in a bucket down the sideline.
- 25:37Speaker 2: He's running the ball effectively. He's not a great runner,
- 25:41Speaker 2: but he can get you some extra yards. He's a
- 25:43Speaker 2: big guy. He looked good in the second half, and
- 25:45Speaker 2: they fall behind 17-0. That was not a good first
- 25:48Speaker 2: half performance by Vandy or him. or anyone, and they're
- 25:52Speaker 2: down most of that game. But you also– they're driving
- 25:56Speaker 2: to win, and we're like, well, he's going to have
- 25:58Speaker 2: his moment. We're going to remember this touchdown throw or
- 26:01Speaker 2: this run or whatever he's going to do to win
- 26:02Speaker 2: the game.
- 26:03Speaker 1: And instead he throws a pick. Right.
- 26:05Speaker 2: You know, an ill-advised pass and a triple coverage down
- 26:08Speaker 2: the sideline. Like, okay, there's a freshman moment. Now NC
- 26:10Speaker 2: State's going to win this. And then, I mean, C.J.
- 26:13Speaker 1: Bailey. If you Google C.J.
- 26:15Speaker 2: Bailey right now, the first story that pops up is
- 26:18Speaker 2: from Yahoo Sports. And the headline is, take his NIL
- 26:22Speaker 2: money away. Absolutely inexcusable. College football fans want C.J. Bailey
- 26:26Speaker 2: cut from NC State after most absent-minded error versus Vanderbilt.
- 26:31Speaker 2: The kid had a good game.
- 26:33Speaker 1: Yes.
- 26:34Speaker 2: That's what sucks about this for him. I legitimately hurt
- 26:37Speaker 2: for him because this will follow him forever. Yes, you're
- 26:42Speaker 2: going to get to go play more games. Yes, you
- 26:45Speaker 2: might transfer and get out of there because this is
- 26:47Speaker 2: going to leave such a bad taste.
- 26:49Speaker 1: With the fans, with you.
- 26:51Speaker 2: But you're going to have chances to make up for it,
- 26:53Speaker 2: but it's never going to be forgotten. You're always, when
- 26:56Speaker 2: we talk about, remember that quarterback at NC State?
- 26:59Speaker 1: Oh, C.J.
- 26:59Speaker 2: Bailey. Wasn't he the guy that he could have just
- 27:01Speaker 2: taken a knee and instead fumbled a ball in the
- 27:04Speaker 2: end zone? I mean, just everything that had to happen, right?
- 27:07Speaker 2: Not only fumbled, he didn't fumble it out of the
- 27:09Speaker 2: end zone. It wasn't recovered by NC State. It was
- 27:11Speaker 2: immediately pounced on by Vandy. They're celebrating in that end zone.
- 27:15Speaker 2: And that's the first thing we saw. We're watching the game.
- 27:18Speaker 2: We're thinking, okay, NC State's got it. Why did Dave
- 27:20Speaker 2: Doran just take a delay of game?
- 27:22Speaker 1: Now he's backed up to the one. That was the
- 27:24Speaker 1: play before.
- 27:25Speaker 2: And then the next time I'm hitting you on the
- 27:27Speaker 2: shoulder saying, Vandy's celebrating and they just won the game.
- 27:30Speaker 1: There's no time on the clock and they're on the
- 27:32Speaker 1: end zone. What happened?
- 27:33Speaker 2: Then we see all the reviews and everything else and
- 27:35Speaker 2: the replays of it.
- 27:37Speaker 1: I'm stunned.
- 27:38Speaker 2: I hurt for the NC State kid. If you're Vandy also,
- 27:42Speaker 2: you don't look a gift horse in the mouth. You
- 27:45Speaker 2: don't apologize. They made a critical error, and you pounced
- 27:48Speaker 2: on it and took it, and you're 3-0. Now, do
- 27:51Speaker 2: I feel as good about Vandy through three games I
- 27:53Speaker 2: thought I might going into this season?
- 27:55Speaker 1: I don't.
- 27:56Speaker 2: I feel great that they're 3-0, that they found a
- 27:58Speaker 2: way to beat NC State. But when I watched NC
- 28:01Speaker 2: State that first weekend against Virginia, and I'm thinking what
- 28:04Speaker 2: I saw at practice with Vandy and what they could
- 28:06Speaker 2: be with Jared Curtis, I thought that would be a
- 28:09Speaker 2: double-digit win for Vandy at home, and they wouldn't have
- 28:12Speaker 2: to survive a miracle to do it. Again, and I
- 28:16Speaker 2: posted this at halftime of the game, just early window observations.
- 28:20Speaker 2: I think Vandy's taking a sizable step back this year.
- 28:22Speaker 2: They're off to a great start, but from what I
- 28:24Speaker 2: saw last year with Diego Pavia and that 10-win team,
- 28:27Speaker 2: this is not a reach. What does sizable step mean?
- 28:30Speaker 2: I'm just saying from what I'm seeing from that Vandy
- 28:32Speaker 2: team on the field, even though they're surviving and winning,
- 28:35Speaker 2: I think it's a pretty big step back. Now, what
- 28:38Speaker 2: are they going to be in the future? A lot
- 28:40Speaker 2: better because they've got a future pro it looks like
- 28:44Speaker 2: in Jared Curtis at quarterback, and they're going to build
- 28:46Speaker 2: around him, and they're going to get better and better.
- 28:49Speaker 1: I'm thinking, where are they going to be in November
- 28:51Speaker 1: compared to September with this quarterback? Yeah. Because he makes
- 28:55Speaker 1: his first start, second half, they're down. NC State's dominating
- 29:00Speaker 1: this game. Vanderbilt's looking like they have, defensively too, like
- 29:04Speaker 1: they have the first two weeks of the season against
- 29:06Speaker 1: inferior opponents. And then here is the quarterback with a
- 29:10Speaker 1: moment to drive down and take the lead. Now he
- 29:13Speaker 1: throws the pick, but if this is the floor, if
- 29:16Speaker 1: we're going to compare it to the Titans and the catchphrases,
- 29:18Speaker 1: if we're going to see where they are at the
- 29:19Speaker 1: end of the year with a true freshman quarterback that's
- 29:22Speaker 1: making his first start in week three, this is a
- 29:25Speaker 1: great way to start things off because you still get
- 29:28Speaker 1: the win. You get the 3-0, and you have so
- 29:30Speaker 1: many moments to point to. You have the improbable finish,
- 29:35Speaker 1: and now you hit the road in the SEC, and
- 29:37Speaker 1: it's not about the quarterback who couldn't drive down and win.
- 29:40Speaker 1: it through the pick. It's the way that you made
- 29:42Speaker 1: a play and made things happen, and you still keep
- 29:45Speaker 1: the ball rolling. I mean, they've got three wins. I
- 29:48Speaker 1: was thinking, man, if they get six or seven wins
- 29:51Speaker 1: this year, step back. But, man, the jump forward you
- 29:56Speaker 1: can make with the momentum of having a sophomore coming
- 29:59Speaker 1: back and having the experience as a starter. Chad, correct
- 30:02Speaker 1: me if I'm wrong, you called his state championship game, right?
- 30:05Speaker 1: I did, yeah. And you called him the best prospect
- 30:08Speaker 1: you'd seen.
- 30:09Speaker 2: He is the, he made everything look so easy and effortless.
- 30:14Speaker 2: It was unlike any, I don't know that he's the
- 30:16Speaker 2: best prospect I've ever seen.
- 30:18Speaker 1: Well, in person, I think is what you said. Well,
- 30:21Speaker 1: I think quarterback he is. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 30:23Speaker 2: Now, keep in mind, like Jerry Curtis, this is a
- 30:25Speaker 2: knock on him, he played at Nashville Christian, which is,
- 30:28Speaker 2: the smallest of private school classifications in Tennessee. He played
- 30:32Speaker 2: University School of Jackson in that game. I mean, it
- 30:34Speaker 2: looked like a middle school team that he was playing
- 30:37Speaker 2: compared to him. I mean, their defensive lineman, he was
- 30:39Speaker 2: outweighing by 70 pounds, you know, like quarterback. Like he
- 30:43Speaker 2: looked like a grown man playing against small children in
- 30:46Speaker 2: the game. But he's an effortless slinger of the football team.
- 30:53Speaker 2: Like you see in that game, like he does not
- 30:55Speaker 2: have to put much effort at all into spinning it
- 30:58Speaker 2: right where he wants to do it. Like he is a–
- 31:00Speaker 2: what did Barton Simmons tell us when we were watching practice?
- 31:03Speaker 2: A talented ball thrower.
- 31:05Speaker 1: Ball thrower. Yeah, he is a great– he's got a
- 31:09Speaker 1: lot of arm talent. Let's put it that way.
- 31:12Speaker 2: But, yeah, I mean, look, I saw some things I like.
- 31:14Speaker 2: I saw some things I didn't like. I think that
- 31:16Speaker 2: he's obviously, like any freshman, he's got to grow and mature.
- 31:20Speaker 2: He's got to make better decisions because– The storyline would
- 31:23Speaker 2: have been, hey, great game by Jared Curtis, but he
- 31:26Speaker 2: threw a pick with a game on the line. If
- 31:29Speaker 2: that wilding doesn't end up the way it does. Brooks says,
- 31:32Speaker 2: Clark Lee said they called a full punt rush alignment
- 31:35Speaker 2: on that winning play.
- 31:36Speaker 1: Which was good coaching.
- 31:37Speaker 2: Yeah, it's good coaching, but that's what you expect if
- 31:39Speaker 2: you're NC State. I don't know what else Clark Lee
- 31:42Speaker 2: would call. There's one play left. You have to get
- 31:45Speaker 2: to the quarterback immediately. And expect if they're going to
- 31:48Speaker 2: take a knee.
- 31:49Speaker 1: Like, C.J. Bailey was doing the right thing. Just go down.
- 31:53Speaker 1: He's staring at a clock.
- 31:55Speaker 2: The bodies are barreling in behind him and in front
- 31:58Speaker 2: of him. I mean, and I don't know what the
- 32:00Speaker 2: talking point was. I know Dave Dorn has said a
- 32:02Speaker 2: lot of words about it and everything else. But you
- 32:05Speaker 2: have got to put in the head, hey, they're coming.
- 32:08Speaker 1: They're coming.
- 32:09Speaker 2: They've got more than we can block. They're bringing their
- 32:12Speaker 2: entire team at you. If you feel anybody in your vicinity,
- 32:16Speaker 2: you just go down quickly.
- 32:17Speaker 1: We'll kick off. If there's one second left, fine.
- 32:20Speaker 2: We'll kick off up one and let Vandy do the
- 32:23Speaker 2: lateral game until we eventually pounce on it or tackle
- 32:26Speaker 2: them and the game's over. It's just of all of
- 32:30Speaker 2: the possible outcomes, that was the one thing you could
- 32:34Speaker 2: not do if you're NC State. And because of it,
- 32:37Speaker 2: NC State does not get a– that would have been
- 32:39Speaker 2: a gigantic win for NC State. The way they started
- 32:42Speaker 2: the year. To go to Vandy as an underdog and
- 32:44Speaker 2: win an SEC road game.
- 32:47Speaker 1: Right. Oh, man. Here's Clark Lee postgame. Yeah. How about
- 33:02Speaker 1: them Commodores? Yeah, he was ready.
- 33:06Speaker 2: I'm still remembering watching the– The celebration of just thinking,
- 33:12Speaker 2: did Vandy just win? It looks like they're celebrating a
- 33:15Speaker 2: win in the end zone. After all of that that happened,
- 33:19Speaker 2: it was wild.
- 33:20Speaker 1: I just, again, I think the human being in anybody,
- 33:23Speaker 1: you hurt for, I hurt for C.J. Bailey.
- 33:27Speaker 2: If anybody's ever competed at anything in any big moment
- 33:30Speaker 2: or any big game, like, I feel for the kid.
- 33:33Speaker 2: I've got empathy for him and what he's going through.
- 33:36Speaker 2: Was the bonehead of play?
- 33:37Speaker 1: Absolutely. Does he deserve ridicule? Sure.
- 33:41Speaker 2: I can't imagine not feeling terrible and beating yourself up
- 33:45Speaker 2: over it for a long time if you're him.
- 33:48Speaker 1: Hopefully he can bounce back.
- 33:50Speaker 2: But the key now for Vandy is they go on
- 33:52Speaker 2: the road to face a bit of a reeling Auburn
- 33:55Speaker 2: team now after they lost at home to Florida.
- 33:57Speaker 1: So I think a big opportunity for Vandy on the
- 34:00Speaker 1: road this upcoming weekend. And speaking of Clark Lee, the
- 34:04Speaker 1: last time we referenced a speech in a locker room
- 34:09Speaker 1: from him, was a pregame speech at Auburn two years ago.
- 34:14Speaker 1: And Pavia's talking trash. He's winning the Iron Bowl. They
- 34:21Speaker 1: went there and won. And they surprised a lot of
- 34:24Speaker 1: people that week, too. This is just one of those
- 34:27Speaker 1: where you get this win, and it's able to give
- 34:31Speaker 1: the momentum of belief. That's what they've lacked, Chad. We
- 34:37Speaker 1: saw them lose to Georgia State with Diego Pavia. So
- 34:40Speaker 1: let me preface this. Pavia represented the guy that you
- 34:45Speaker 1: look to that was going to make a play that
- 34:48Speaker 1: was going to win the game. The belief going into
- 34:52Speaker 1: the week, the preparation, was we're the underdogs, but we
- 34:55Speaker 1: don't view ourselves as that this year because we have Pavia.
- 35:01Speaker 1: He's the ultimate underdog who wins. He always climbs the ladder.
- 35:06Speaker 1: And that's the spark. that I said that they've got
- 35:10Speaker 1: to figure out how to get that without having the
- 35:13Speaker 1: one individual. Can you do that as a group instead
- 35:16Speaker 1: of the individual? And this is one of those deals
- 35:20Speaker 1: where I know he throws the pick, but you're able
- 35:23Speaker 1: to do it as a team and win this game.
- 35:26Speaker 1: And now can you roll forward where you let Curtis
- 35:29Speaker 1: evolve into this guy? There's no doubt. He's the five-star,
- 35:33Speaker 1: just like Tennessee's got theirs. We can see these guys
- 35:37Speaker 1: improve week to week. I'm excited to see that development,
- 35:40Speaker 1: even though record-wise it's not a 10-win team. The gauntlet
- 35:44Speaker 1: now begins across the SEC for everyone. Man, no better
- 35:51Speaker 1: example than Kentucky on the road against A & M. Yeah,
- 35:56Speaker 1: no doubt.
- 35:57Speaker 2: Just nuts with that game. By the way, the Jake Keller–
- 36:00Speaker 2: on our chat says, the luck is finally on the
- 36:02Speaker 2: door side. Vandy's been on the losing end of these
- 36:04Speaker 2: heartbreakers for years. Maybe the tables have turned. To your point,
- 36:07Speaker 2: they're 14-3 in their last 17 games. This is not
- 36:10Speaker 2: same old Vandy. They're finding ways to win miraculously. So
- 36:14Speaker 2: it's absolutely they're on a positive trend of winning close
- 36:19Speaker 2: games and finding a way. And that is a belief
- 36:22Speaker 2: that infests your locker room and your coaching staff when
- 36:25Speaker 2: you start winning games like that. So good for Clark
- 36:27Speaker 2: Lee and Vandy on finding a way. And Will Stein
- 36:30Speaker 2: in Kentucky. Kentucky might have found their Kiffin, except this
- 36:36Speaker 2: guy wins the top 10 games, right? There is a
- 36:39Speaker 2: swagger about him. He seems to know that state, being
- 36:42Speaker 2: from there, understands that program, and I know it was
- 36:46Speaker 2: a bad second half against Alabama at home, but to
- 36:49Speaker 2: bounce back and go to College Station and win that
- 36:52Speaker 2: game easily, they controlled the football.
- 36:55Speaker 1: Yes. What was amazing. And they don't do that on
- 36:58Speaker 1: the road to the SEC. I think they're, what did
- 37:00Speaker 1: I say, Friday? They're 2-8 in their last 10, the Wildcats,
- 37:04Speaker 1: on the road. You're not used to seeing Kentucky do that.
- 37:09Speaker 1: And then College Station's not an easy place to go
- 37:11Speaker 1: play at Kyle Field. But, Chad, I just have the
- 37:14Speaker 1: sense every year with the Aggies, there's always one of
- 37:17Speaker 1: those games that they slip up at home. A few
- 37:20Speaker 1: years back, it was Miami. They're hosting the Hurricanes. This
- 37:23Speaker 1: is before the Hurricanes were Cam Ward, you know? And
- 37:27Speaker 1: it was just this– yeah, it was a 17-3 game
- 37:31Speaker 1: or something like that.
- 37:34Speaker 2: Well, last year, remember, they took a miracle comeback in
- 37:36Speaker 2: South Carolina.
- 37:37Speaker 1: South Carolina.
- 37:37Speaker 2: To keep their– that kept their college football playoff hopes alive.
- 37:40Speaker 2: They eventually made it. But that was one of those
- 37:43Speaker 2: that you were looking to score in the first half.
- 37:44Speaker 1: What?
- 37:45Speaker 2: They're down 28 points or whatever, just a complete no-show
- 37:49Speaker 2: from A & M in that game until they had
- 37:51Speaker 2: the big comeback in the second half. Yeah, I mean,
- 37:53Speaker 2: it's a bad loss.
- 37:54Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 37:56Speaker 2: Slice it out if you want, Kentucky, they're probably better
- 37:59Speaker 2: than we expected coming in. I think Kenny Minchie's going
- 38:01Speaker 2: to be a player also. They're not that good. You know,
- 38:04Speaker 2: they're not top half of the SEC.
- 38:06Speaker 1: No. I still don't think so.
- 38:07Speaker 2: To allow them to go in, and this was not–
- 38:10Speaker 2: the NC State loss was a fluke, right? JT, you know,
- 38:14Speaker 2: poses the question, did NC State lose it or did
- 38:17Speaker 2: Vandy win it? NC State lost it, but Vandy took advantage.
- 38:20Speaker 2: So I still give them credit, and they get the win.
- 38:23Speaker 2: Kentucky went in there and took it. I mean, they
- 38:26Speaker 2: just won this football game wire to wire. They look
- 38:29Speaker 2: like the better football team. So that does surprise me.
- 38:32Speaker 2: And you've got the veteran Marcel Reed, the quarterback. It's
- 38:36Speaker 2: really surprising. And it looked like they were looking ahead.
- 38:39Speaker 2: Now they've got to go on the road at LSU.
- 38:42Speaker 2: What a storyline that will be on Saturday night. I
- 38:46Speaker 2: was going to say Kentucky feels like they're maybe, if
- 38:51Speaker 2: they're able to go continue this winning streak, Maybe they're
- 38:54Speaker 2: the Vandy.
- 38:54Speaker 1: Of what we've seen. But it's Mississippi State that's doing
- 38:58Speaker 1: that right now, Chad. Your guy, your quarterback, man. You
- 39:03Speaker 1: have been on this for preseason. Jump aboard the hype.
- 39:08Speaker 1: Welcome aboard. If you want to jump on the Mississippi
- 39:12Speaker 1: State trend, go ahead and do it. Chad's the one
- 39:15Speaker 1: who started it.
- 39:17Speaker 2: I'm sitting in a hail state pool right now. and
- 39:20Speaker 2: I'm lounging and the water is warm. Jump on in,
- 39:22Speaker 2: come on, come in the high dive. You can lower
- 39:25Speaker 2: yourself in through the stairs, jump in, the water is
- 39:28Speaker 2: still warm right now. on the hail state in that pool,
- 39:31Speaker 2: in the hot tub that we're in right now with, with, with,
- 39:34Speaker 2: with Jeff Levy and with Camario Taylor. Taylor is a
- 39:37Speaker 2: stud and go watch his highlight package from that game
- 39:41Speaker 2: at South Carolina. That dude can get in trouble and,
- 39:45Speaker 2: and with a flick of the wrist running right, throw
- 39:48Speaker 2: a laser beam to somebody that you're like, how did
- 39:51Speaker 2: he see that guy open? His ability to keep his
- 39:54Speaker 2: eyes downfield and to make plays his legs when he
- 39:56Speaker 2: takes off and scrambles, incredible. But the top thing everybody says,
- 40:01Speaker 2: and this is what Mississippi State has to fight and
- 40:03Speaker 2: shake off, everyone is watching him and saying, boy, the
- 40:07Speaker 2: bidding war for that guy in the offseason. Someone's going
- 40:10Speaker 2: to come in with a bag of cash, and lure
- 40:13Speaker 2: him away from Mississippi State. And it's just an assumption.
- 40:16Speaker 2: No one's thinking about Mississippi State next year with Kamaru Taylor.
- 40:18Speaker 2: They're thinking he's got one more year after this before
- 40:21Speaker 2: he's in the NFL draft, and an LSU or someone
- 40:25Speaker 2: is going to come in and pay top dollar and
- 40:27Speaker 2: bring him over, and he's going to light it up
- 40:29Speaker 2: for some national title contender. That may very well happen.
- 40:33Speaker 2: But if you're Mississippi State and you're Jeff Love, you're saying, hey, guys,
- 40:36Speaker 2: we're in the SEC too. We just went on the
- 40:38Speaker 2: road at night and won a big football game against
- 40:42Speaker 2: South Carolina, I guess it was late afternoon that game.
- 40:45Speaker 2: But either way, you've got to say, we play big
- 40:47Speaker 2: boy football also at Mississippi State. To do that now,
- 40:50Speaker 2: you've got to pay big boy money and ante up
- 40:54Speaker 2: whatever it takes to keep Kamario Taylor in the fold.
- 40:57Speaker 2: That's next year. That's this next offseason. Right now, Mississippi
- 41:01Speaker 2: State is a college football playoff contender. I truly believe that.
- 41:05Speaker 1: Is it fair or unfair that I think of– the
- 41:10Speaker 1: spot that Mississippi State is in and compare the quarterback
- 41:14Speaker 1: to what Sellers used to be his freshman year at
- 41:17Speaker 1: South Carolina. I don't think Taylor arrived and Sellers had
- 41:23Speaker 1: all the hype and did some great things. I just
- 41:25Speaker 1: haven't thought of Sellers in the group of quarterbacks anymore.
- 41:29Speaker 1: Catfish Jake says Camario will beat Bama. Jake is an
- 41:32Speaker 1: Alabama fan. I heard our guys on Next Round Live.
- 41:34Speaker 1: LT said he thinks that Camario Taylor, Mississippi State, will
- 41:37Speaker 1: go to Tuscaloosa and win. There's a lot of buzz.
- 41:40Speaker 2: Around Kamario Taylor and Mississippi State. Look, Lenora Sellers Hutton
- 41:48Speaker 2: is a great comp on this. I think staying at
- 41:50Speaker 2: South Carolina has hurt the guy. I think he would
- 41:53Speaker 2: have been better served going somewhere else in the portal
- 41:55Speaker 2: and learning from someone different. And I don't think Shane
- 41:58Speaker 2: Beamer's a bad coach. I like what Shane Beamer's done.
- 42:01Speaker 2: To me, you look at South Carolina right now, and
- 42:04Speaker 2: it just feels like a seesaw. no matter what, from
- 42:07Speaker 2: year to year, right? Like, okay, they surprised and did
- 42:09Speaker 2: well this year. Then they're going to fall off a
- 42:11Speaker 2: cliff the next year. Now, they haven't fallen off a
- 42:14Speaker 2: cliff yet, but they fell off the cliff last year
- 42:16Speaker 2: after a good season before, and they're off to a
- 42:19Speaker 2: bad start this year, losing that game at home.
- 42:22Speaker 1: And you've got Lenore Sill.
- 42:23Speaker 2: You've got some top-level NFL picks, you know, at the
- 42:27Speaker 2: top of that roster for South Carolina. And I love
- 42:30Speaker 2: when a guy stays home. I love when he commits
- 42:33Speaker 2: to a team and a program and doesn't transfer. So
- 42:35Speaker 2: full marks for Lenore Sellers in doing that. I just
- 42:38Speaker 2: think that there will be a question at the end
- 42:39Speaker 2: of this year of was that the best route for
- 42:42Speaker 2: development for him to stay at South Carolina the entire time.
- 42:46Speaker 1: Let's make a pact here, though, because an agreement. We
- 42:49Speaker 1: have to remember this. It was Sellers and it was
- 42:51Speaker 1: a group of guys who stayed with Beamer. I love that.
- 42:59Speaker 1: For all the talk about guys moving around, they decided
- 43:02Speaker 1: to come back. There's money there. There's money everywhere, though.
- 43:06Speaker 1: And the fact that they backed their coach for one year,
- 43:10Speaker 1: I'm cool with that. We talked to Beamer about that
- 43:13Speaker 1: at SEC Media Days with the decision surrounding that. I
- 43:18Speaker 1: also don't mind the fact that Beamer's willing to talk
- 43:21Speaker 1: about it openly. The pressure to win and win now.
- 43:25Speaker 1: They don't do that. That's a home game you've got
- 43:28Speaker 1: to have. If you're looking at the schedule, that's a
- 43:31Speaker 1: South Carolina win early in the season, like preseason. We're
- 43:34Speaker 1: just going down the list. It wasn't there. Hey, when
- 43:36Speaker 1: we come back. Absolutely.
- 43:37Speaker 2: By the way, real quick, I misspoke. The Bama-Mississippi State
- 43:40Speaker 2: game in Starkville. I feel even better about a Mississippi
- 43:43Speaker 2: State win. Not in Tuscaloosa.
- 43:47Speaker 1: When is that game? It's coming up. I don't have
- 43:51Speaker 1: it in front of me. When we come back, let's
- 43:54Speaker 1: discuss Florida-Auburn. And then we've got some NFL topics as well.
- 43:59Speaker 1: We also look ahead later in the show, we'll look
- 44:01Speaker 1: ahead to the lines, the opening lines for Hard Rock
- 44:03Speaker 1: Bet on the matchups coming up for the SEC. A
- 44:05Speaker 1: big three-pack. It's a great weekend of college football straight

- 44:45Speaker 2: You're going to talk to a human being who cares
- 44:47Speaker 2: about your situation. They want to get you in the

- 45:27Speaker 2: This advertisement is not a promise to make a loan.
- 45:31Speaker 1: Jed, we've had John Summerall on our show, past show. And, man, maybe,
- 45:38Speaker 1: turns out maybe he's exactly what Florida needs. Exactly what
- 45:41Speaker 1: Florida needs is they go and they beat Auburn. And
- 45:44Speaker 1: now they set up a matchup against Ole Miss. Here's
- 45:46Speaker 1: Summerall postgame. Chad, did you see his postgame in the
- 46:03Speaker 1: locker room as well? Look at him.
- 46:07Speaker 2: He was real hard up about Auburn growing up in Huntsville.
- 46:11Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah.
- 46:12Speaker 2: He dropped the F-bomb also. They didn't want us. They
- 46:15Speaker 2: didn't want to talk about us. They ain't going to
- 46:17Speaker 2: talk about Florida anymore. It's rare to see John Gruden
- 46:20Speaker 2: get alpha-dogged like that with another grown man messing up
- 46:22Speaker 2: his hair and knocking his hat off.
- 46:25Speaker 1: I mean, John.
- 46:26Speaker 2: Sumrall is a meathead in the perfect way. He is
- 46:31Speaker 2: a more intelligent version of Ed Orgeron when it comes
- 46:34Speaker 2: to the.
- 46:34Speaker 1: Meatheadiness of him.
- 46:36Speaker 2: Ed Orgeron is like, I still think back, Mike, this
- 46:39Speaker 2: man won a national title. We talked about this with
- 46:42Speaker 2: Jimbo Fisher when I watch him on TV now. Not
- 46:44Speaker 2: that long ago, 2013, Jimbo Fisher won a national title
- 46:48Speaker 2: with Florida State. It's crazy when you see him and
- 46:51Speaker 2: watch him interact and things. This was a leader of
- 46:54Speaker 2: men of an organization that won a national title.
- 46:57Speaker 1: I feel the same way about Orgeron.
- 46:59Speaker 2: I think John Sumrall comes across as way more polished
- 47:03Speaker 2: than Coach O did as a head coach, but it's
- 47:05Speaker 2: the same fight. The fight or flight response, it's always
- 47:10Speaker 2: going to be fight with John Summerall. 100% of the time,
- 47:13Speaker 2: it's going to be fight. And you see that in that.
- 47:15Speaker 1: Video with Gruden. I loved it. The attitude, the energy,
- 47:20Speaker 1: the blunt, direct approach that we're seeing from Summerall, that
- 47:26Speaker 1: we see from Pete Golding, quite frankly. Will Stein. We've
- 47:31Speaker 1: had them on, right? There's a direct, honest... aspect to
- 47:37Speaker 1: them that is not coach speak you know it's just
- 47:40Speaker 1: kind of like they're pissed off for greatness that's the
- 47:42Speaker 1: best way to describe them i think is uh you
- 47:45Speaker 1: know they're they're not afraid to just say exactly the
- 47:48Speaker 1: word they want to say you know and that's that's
- 47:51Speaker 1: a that's a different vibe across the sec right now
- 47:56Speaker 1: you know that the he's you got some are all
- 47:59Speaker 1: in in the locker room Saying, you know what? It
- 48:02Speaker 1: gets everybody quiet. Ethel. And everybody goes crazy. How about
- 48:05Speaker 1: the Gators? It's what you want to see if you're
- 48:09Speaker 1: the fan of the team that has been down and
- 48:12Speaker 1: eight wins isn't good enough. Finishing top ten in recruiting
- 48:16Speaker 1: isn't good enough. You want to be top five. That's
- 48:19Speaker 1: what you have to have to get momentum. And that's
- 48:21Speaker 1: a win you have to have if you want to
- 48:23Speaker 1: bring back the program sooner rather than later. And it
- 48:27Speaker 1: sets up a big matchup this week. Every week is big.
- 48:30Speaker 1: But just the results of week three lead into week
- 48:33Speaker 1: four with some jam-packed and drama-filled matchups that are going
- 48:37Speaker 1: to be a lot of fun.
- 48:38Speaker 2: If you are a Florida fan, think about you just
- 48:43Speaker 2: came from Billy Napier. And Billy Napier is a great
- 48:47Speaker 2: person and seems like a really good down-to-earth dude that
- 48:51Speaker 2: a lot of people respect and like. But you go
- 48:54Speaker 2: from a guy– and I say this respectfully– who feels
- 48:57Speaker 2: like he should be drinking out of a styrofoam cup
- 49:00Speaker 2: while leading Bible study, the way he speaks to the team, right?
- 49:03Speaker 2: Like he's like leading a youth group or he's talking
- 49:06Speaker 2: to someone. He's a Dabo light. Yeah, but like calm.
- 49:09Speaker 2: Dabo's got a big personality and is loud and, you know,
- 49:12Speaker 2: he gets after it and doing all that. Like he's
- 49:14Speaker 2: just monotone at all times with every answer, with everything
- 49:18Speaker 2: he's doing, addressing his team and all that.
- 49:19Speaker 1: Right.
- 49:20Speaker 2: You go from that to that yeah we go from
- 49:23Speaker 2: billy napier to a dude who just steamrolled john gruden
- 49:28Speaker 2: post game while hugging his family and celebrating a win
- 49:31Speaker 2: at auburn it's just oftentimes athletic directors will go from
- 49:34Speaker 2: one extreme to the next offensive guy got to be
- 49:37Speaker 2: a defensive guy Loud mouth guy, got to be a
- 49:40Speaker 2: quiet guy, right? Quiet guy, then you got to go
- 49:42Speaker 2: to a loud guy. This is an example, though, of
- 49:45Speaker 2: Florida fans. They were complaining about the results with Billy Napier,
- 49:48Speaker 2: and rightfully so. But they're also complaining about the attitude.
- 49:51Speaker 2: You need to have a swagger if you're the Florida coach.
- 49:54Speaker 2: It all goes back to Steve Spurrier. He's the gold
- 49:56Speaker 2: standard of what you want to see at Florida. Urban
- 49:58Speaker 2: Meyer did it in a different way, but his teams
- 50:00Speaker 2: were punishing also. John Sumrall's got that it factor on.
- 50:06Speaker 2: that you want to see in any coach, but especially
- 50:09Speaker 2: a Florida Gators coach, it's off to a great start.
- 50:11Speaker 2: That was a big-time win on the road for the Gators.
- 50:14Speaker 1: He doesn't have the initials U.S. Grant. He's more William
- 50:16Speaker 1: Tecumseh Sherman in the march through Atlanta is what Jim
- 50:20Speaker 1: Somerhal is bringing, you know, like this take-no-prisoners approach. You know,
- 50:25Speaker 1: burn down the city as we march through the SEC
- 50:28Speaker 1: and we chant our own fight song while we go
- 50:33Speaker 1: through the state of Alabama.
- 50:35Speaker 2: It's his march to the sea.
- 50:37Speaker 1: Yes.
- 50:38Speaker 2: Every game feels like a march to the sea for
- 50:40Speaker 2: John Sumrall in Florida as they try to take Savannah eventually.
- 50:44Speaker 2: By December, they'll take Savannah. We're landlocked in Gainesville, but
- 50:48Speaker 2: by God, we're taking the sea. I think it works.
- 50:52Speaker 2: I think every program is different and they have their
- 50:54Speaker 2: own personality. I think there are certain programs where any
- 50:57Speaker 2: personality could work as long as they're a good football coach.
- 51:00Speaker 2: I think other places, they only work well with certain
- 51:04Speaker 2: types of dudes. I think Florida's one of those. I
- 51:07Speaker 2: think Florida's got a lot of advantages, and when Florida's good,
- 51:10Speaker 2: we've seen it a lot, they can be right there
- 51:13Speaker 2: with anybody in the country in terms of football. But Hutton,
- 51:17Speaker 2: I do think that it takes a certain level of
- 51:21Speaker 2: being okay with being a villain, and John Sumrall certainly
- 51:24Speaker 2: is that, with having a little bit of a loudmouth persona.
- 51:30Speaker 1: We've seen it with Spurrier.
- 51:32Speaker 2: I think the villain part of it you saw with
- 51:33Speaker 2: Urban Meyer who had no problem doing that. I think
- 51:36Speaker 2: John Summerall's got that same charisma an attitude that you
- 51:40Speaker 2: want to see with a Florida Gators coach.
- 51:42Speaker 1: It's the right fit for right now. It's like you
- 51:44Speaker 1: don't have to have that. The guy that always follows
- 51:46Speaker 1: the guy doesn't need to be like this. It's what
- 51:49Speaker 1: Florida needed. It's like Tennessee needed what Heupel brought. They
- 51:52Speaker 1: needed a football coach that wasn't going to be brick
- 51:54Speaker 1: by brick and have all these different phrases or drop
- 51:58Speaker 1: money in a bag. They needed someone who was just
- 52:00Speaker 1: going to embrace the rules and toe the line and
- 52:04Speaker 1: bring in quarterbacks. Bring in the five stars. Good job.
- 52:09Speaker 1: That's the momentum you want. You want to have belief
- 52:12Speaker 1: for a program that is believing in where they are,
- 52:16Speaker 1: not where they were. Speaking of believing, I don't believe it.
- 52:21Speaker 1: Believe it. Are they 0-2? Are they 2-0? We're going
- 52:25Speaker 1: to cross the NFL. The 2-0 teams, we've got three
- 52:29Speaker 1: of them coming up. They're surprises. Are we buying it
- 52:33Speaker 1: at 2-0? Don't believe it? Or believe it. Straight ahead
- 52:37Speaker 1: here on Nothing to Withdraw.
