- 0:01For most people, the experience of losing the sense of the ego
- 0:05is unplanned, fleeting, and even unappreciated.
- 0:09As it occurs, they simply shift their identification elsewhere
- 0:14without recognizing what exactly is taking place with respect to
- 0:18the seat and focus of their conscious awareness.
- 0:23For the spiritual seeker, however, these glimpses provide
- 0:26an insight to the eventual process of loosening the grip of
- 0:30the ego and widening the individual ego consciousness to
- 0:35join the universal consciousness with all of the liberating
- 0:39effects and powers of knowledge and action that accompany that
- 0:44shift. All of the techniques, whether
- 0:48the focus on a single point of light or intense concentration
- 0:52in reading, or the identification with some
- 0:55external being, as was illustrated with the example of
- 0:58the theater, or a deep silent identification with a piece of
- 1:02music. Or, as noted here below, the
- 1:07identification with fish in an aquarium, or indeed any other
- 1:12techniques that shift the awareness out of the little ego
- 1:15sense have their place in the spiritual growth process.
- 1:21These are not things that one can achieve through mental
- 1:23struggle. The mental struggle simply roots
- 1:27the being more deeply into the ego awareness.
- 1:30Rather, the struggle has to be dropped so that the
- 1:34consciousness can expand and explore the wider possibilities
- 1:38as it shifts its seat. Seekers sometimes start by
- 1:43working to shift their awareness out of the brain center and into
- 1:46the heart center, or even undertaking systematic
- 1:51relaxation techniques such as starting with awareness of the
- 1:54toes and then slowly shifting the awareness up through other
- 1:59parts of the body. All of these practices can
- 2:03prepare the individual to allow the consciousness to move
- 2:06further away above the head or externally into other places or
- 2:12beings, the mother writes. Quote These are phenomena of
- 2:18self identification only they are involuntary.
- 2:22And this is also one of the methods used today to cure
- 2:25nervous diseases. When someone cannot sleep,
- 2:29cannot be restful because he is too excited and nervous, and his
- 2:33nerves are ill and weakened by excessive agitation, he is told
- 2:37to sit in front of an aquarium, for instance.
- 2:40An aquarium. That's very lovely, isn't it?
- 2:44Before an aquarium with Pretty Little fish in it, goldfish.
- 2:48Just to sit there, settle down in an easy chair and try not to
- 2:53think of anything, particularly not of his troubles, and look at
- 2:58the fish. So he looks at the fish moving
- 3:01around, coming and going, swimming, gliding, turning,
- 3:06meeting, crossing, chasing one another indefinitely, and also
- 3:12the water flowing slowly and the passing fish.
- 3:16After a while he lives the life of fishes.
- 3:19He comes and goes, swims, glides, plays, and at the end of
- 3:24the hour his nerves are in a perfect state and he is
- 3:28completely restful. But the condition is that one
- 3:32must not think of one's troubles, simply watch the fish.
