- Lucas: Luna, welcome back. I am so ready to learn something new today. Luna: Me too. I've been practicing ordering chapati from last episode, and I think I've got it. Lucas: Oh, that's so good. You're becoming a pro at the market. So today, let's talk about hobbies. Luna: Hobbies. I love talking about what people do for fun. Lucas: Exactly. And a great first phrase is 'Ninasoma'. Luna: Ninasoma. Lucas: That means 'I read'. Try it again. Luna: Ninasoma. Lucas: Perfect. So if someone asks you what you do in your free time, you can say 'Ninasoma'. Luna: Ninasoma. I can say that. What about 'I play'? Lucas: That's 'Ninacheza'. Luna: Ninacheza. Lucas: Yeah. 'Ninacheza' can mean playing a game, playing an instrument, or just playing around. Luna: So if I play football, I say 'Ninacheza mpira'? Lucas: Exactly. You're already building sentences. And one more: 'Ninaimba'. Luna: Ninaimba. Lucas: That's 'I sing'. Luna: Ninaimba. So I could say 'Ninaimba nyimbo' meaning 'I sing songs'. Lucas: Totally. Now let's learn how to ask someone about their hobbies. You say 'Unapenda kufanya nini?'. Luna: Unapenda kufanya nini? That's a mouthful. Lucas: It means 'What do you like to do?'. Luna: Unapenda kufanya nini. Lucas: Good. And you can answer with 'Napenda kusoma'. Luna: Napenda kusoma. 'I like to read'. Lucas: Yeah. 'Napenda' means 'I like'. So 'Napenda kusoma' is 'I like to read'. Luna: Okay, so 'Ninasoma' is 'I am reading' or 'I read', and 'Napenda kusoma' is 'I like to read'. Lucas: Exactly. You're catching the pattern. Luna: Let me try a little conversation. So if you ask me 'Unapenda kufanya nini?', I could say 'Napenda kusoma'. Lucas: Yes. And then I could say 'Mimi napenda kucheza'. Luna: Mimi napenda kucheza. 'I like to play'. Lucas: Right. Now let's practice all four phrases together. Repeat after me: Ninasoma. Luna: Ninasoma. Lucas: Ninacheza. Luna: Ninacheza. Lucas: Ninaimba. Luna: Ninaimba. Lucas: Unapenda kufanya nini? Luna: Unapenda kufanya nini? Lucas: Napenda kusoma. Luna: Napenda kusoma. Lucas: Perfect. Now let me tell you a little story. Yesterday, I met a friend at the park. I asked him 'Unapenda kufanya nini?' He said 'Napenda kusoma'. And I said 'Mimi napenda kucheza mpira'. Luna: That's so cool. So you can actually have a real conversation about hobbies with just these phrases. Lucas: Absolutely. And you know, Fexingo has been helping so many people learn Swahili just like this, step by step. Luna: Yeah. It's amazing that we can do this without ads or anything. Lucas: Right. A handful of listeners chip in monthly through buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo, and that's literally what funds making this many of these. Luna: That's so nice. It keeps the show ad-free and focused on learning. Lucas: Exactly. So if it's been helping you make actual progress with Swahili, that's one way to help keep it going. Luna: For sure. But now, back to hobbies. Can you give me a challenge? Lucas: Sure. Imagine someone asks you 'Unapenda kufanya nini?' and you want to say 'I like to read and I like to sing'. Luna: Okay. 'Napenda kusoma na napenda kuimba'. Lucas: Wow. That's perfect. 'Kuimba' is 'to sing', so 'Napenda kuimba' means 'I like to sing'. Luna: So 'Ninaimba' is 'I sing' and 'Napenda kuimba' is 'I like to sing'. Lucas: Yes. And 'Ninacheza' is 'I play', 'Napenda kucheza' is 'I like to play'. Luna: That pattern is so consistent. I love it. Lucas: Me too. Let's do one more round. Repeat: Ninasoma. Luna: Ninasoma. Lucas: Ninacheza. Luna: Ninacheza. Lucas: Ninaimba. Luna: Ninaimba. Lucas: Unapenda kufanya nini? Luna: Unapenda kufanya nini? Lucas: Napenda kusoma. Luna: Napenda kusoma. Lucas: Great. Now you can talk about hobbies in Swahili. Luna: I feel so accomplished. Next time I meet a Swahili speaker, I'm going to ask them 'Unapenda kufanya nini?'. Lucas: Do it. And they'll be impressed. Practice these till we chat again. Luna: Will do. Thanks, Lucas.
