- 0:02Speaker 1: This is the Sean O'Connell Show, your home of the
- 0:05Speaker 1: best inside of your Utes. Let's get back to OC
- 0:09Speaker 1: from the Murdoch Chevrolet studio of ESPN 700 at 92.1 FM.
- 0:13Speaker 1: Welcome to our number.
- 0:23Speaker 2: Three on a Tuesday edition of the Sean O'Connell Show,
- 0:25Speaker 2: and welcome in Jeff Schwartz, longtime NFL veteran. college football
- 0:34Speaker 2: stud at the University of Oregon, friend of the program,
- 0:37Speaker 2: my friend, former co-host of mine on Pac-12 Radio, betting expert,
- 0:42Speaker 2: all things, and coach of the Thunderbats, who've had a
- 0:45Speaker 2: very successful season, if that matters to you.
- 0:48Speaker 3: Jeff, welcome back to the show. How are you?
- 0:49Speaker 4: It should matter to everybody. Did you know McAfee is
- 0:54Speaker 4: this soft? Is that something that you knew beforehand or
- 0:56Speaker 4: just something you learned the last couple of days?
- 1:00Speaker 3: So, okay. You get to say what you want to say.
- 1:03Speaker 2: We have to be a little more careful about our
- 1:05Speaker 2: messaging surrounding the university's apology letter to Pat McAfee. He's
- 1:13Speaker 2: been sensitive about people poking fun at him in the past.
- 1:18Speaker 2: I didn't think he would be sensitive about three 19-year-olds
- 1:21Speaker 2: making fun of him. Not even really making fun of him,
- 1:24Speaker 2: just kind of talking about him.
- 1:26Speaker 4: They asked them to do an impression of McAfee. One
- 1:29Speaker 4: person said, he's going to say something corny. Like, and
- 1:32Speaker 4: then I think he said the exact same, the exact
- 1:34Speaker 4: thing that they said he was going to, he was
- 1:35Speaker 4: going to say that was it. And supposedly he's upset
- 1:39Speaker 4: because the Utah was the one who put the video out. Oh,
- 1:44Speaker 4: so like what, why? It feels like there are people
- 1:50Speaker 4: in life that go about wanting to be offended about stuff.
- 1:55Speaker 4: And they, It feels like in this instance, he wants
- 1:57Speaker 4: to be offended by something Utah did.
- 2:00Speaker 2: I'll tell you, as he was doing the show itself,
- 2:04Speaker 2: I was watching College Game Day. Of course, it's at
- 2:08Speaker 2: President's Circle, like five minutes from my house. I'm like, okay,
- 2:11Speaker 2: it's always great to see them there. The girl who
- 2:14Speaker 2: did the kick was awful. The whole thing was embarrassing.
- 2:17Speaker 2: It's a bad look for her to be like, only
- 2:18Speaker 2: a million dollars. But I thought what we were getting...
- 2:22Speaker 2: Cause Pat is like, I mean, he literally does WWE stuff.
- 2:24Speaker 2: I thought what we were getting is kind of a
- 2:27Speaker 2: deliberate heel turn where Pat was going to play up
- 2:30Speaker 2: that he's the BYU guy. Now, Ryan Smith, BYU alum
- 2:34Speaker 2: owner of the jazz and the mammoth. He's like Pat's
- 2:36Speaker 2: close friend. I thought he was playing up that, okay,
- 2:39Speaker 2: I'm the BYU guy and I don't like these Utah kids.
- 2:44Speaker 2: I thought that's what was going on. I thought it
- 2:46Speaker 2: was being like, you know, kind of a tongue in cheek.
- 2:48Speaker 2: Let's have a little bit of fun with this. And then,
- 2:52Speaker 2: you know, like a manufactured fake beef, which I love
- 2:57Speaker 2: because I'm like, okay, cool. College game day is going
- 3:00Speaker 2: to have a relationship with Utah that everyone can lean
- 3:04Speaker 2: into and have fun with. And then he went on
- 3:06Speaker 2: a show and was like, I felt threatened and all
- 3:08Speaker 2: that stuff.
- 3:09Speaker 3: And I was like, whoa.
- 3:11Speaker 2: But I still was like, okay, let's make this a beef.
- 3:14Speaker 2: Let's make it a thing. And unfortunately, I was wrong.
- 3:17Speaker 2: The university doesn't feel like they can do that.
- 3:20Speaker 3: They need to.
- 3:21Speaker 2: To bend the knee to ESPN and to Pat by
- 3:23Speaker 2: extension and all that stuff in order to, to maintain
- 3:26Speaker 2: a copacetic relationship there. I was hopeful that this was
- 3:30Speaker 2: going to be kind of like a theatrical feud. And
- 3:34Speaker 2: it wasn't, it was, it was him being genuinely bothered.
- 3:39Speaker 4: I just think that you have to have, if you're
- 3:43Speaker 4: in a personality, you have to be able to pick
- 3:46Speaker 4: your battles, right? And, There are certain times when you
- 3:50Speaker 4: should legitimately, you know, stand up for yourself and, you know,
- 3:55Speaker 4: in that. This is not one of them. Like, this
- 3:59Speaker 4: is not the time to pick your battles. Or it's
- 4:02Speaker 4: not time to pick this battle. And I know people
- 4:06Speaker 4: have sent me a tweet that someone tweeted in September that, like,
- 4:11Speaker 4: they hope, you know, Pat McAfee gets Charlie Kirk, which
- 4:14Speaker 4: is absolutely terrible, right? Terrible thing to wish on anybody.
- 4:18Speaker 4: but it's also not a university of Utah thing. Like
- 4:21Speaker 4: that's not a, that's not, that's not that. What does
- 4:23Speaker 4: that do Utah and put a Utah in that same
- 4:27Speaker 4: conversation to me felt like really wrong. And I thought
- 4:31Speaker 4: that part was even extra, right? Like, okay, be upset
- 4:33Speaker 4: that they put the video out, whatevs, but like evoking that,
- 4:37Speaker 4: that assassination and putting it in somehow like attaching that
- 4:40Speaker 4: to Utah felt like really uncalled for. And like, Again,
- 4:46Speaker 4: mean things are said about us on the internet all
- 4:48Speaker 4: the time. I get one message probably a month, something
- 4:50Speaker 4: about being Jewish in my DMs. I just delete it.
- 4:53Speaker 4: I don't call the police. I feel threatened. It's a
- 4:57Speaker 4: random people on the internet, man. What are we doing?
- 5:00Speaker 4: For someone on the internet as much as he obviously is,
- 5:02Speaker 4: I just felt like he handled it really poorly, man.
- 5:06Speaker 2: Is there any validity to my theory that part of
- 5:09Speaker 2: his thin-skinned nature is because he was a punter? And
- 5:14Speaker 2: even if you make it to the highest, highest level
- 5:17Speaker 2: as a punter or as a kicker, right? Everyone just
- 5:20Speaker 2: like automatically respects NFL players because there's this public acknowledgement
- 5:24Speaker 2: that in order to make a living in football, you
- 5:28Speaker 2: have to be some freak of nature human being. But
- 5:31Speaker 2: we don't apply that to the kickers and the punters
- 5:33Speaker 2: and they don't get that kind of respect.
- 5:35Speaker 3: And I imagine I would be sensitive about that.
- 5:38Speaker 4: Maybe. Maybe. But I think that over time, that should
- 5:45Speaker 4: wane because of the success you've had outside of football, right?
- 5:48Speaker 3: Agreed, agreed.
- 5:49Speaker 4: Like, there are times when I think I've been sensitive
- 5:54Speaker 4: or embarrassed about things, and then I'm like, well, who cares?
- 5:58Speaker 4: Why do I care what people think? I am who
- 6:00Speaker 4: I am. Like, what is it? Why do I care
- 6:02Speaker 4: what people think about me? Like, you get to a
- 6:04Speaker 4: point where it's just like, who cares what random people
- 6:06Speaker 4: on the internet say to you? And here's the thing
- 6:08Speaker 4: about it, too, and this is what I tell all
- 6:09Speaker 4: the time to people, like, no one acts like this
- 6:12Speaker 4: in real life, right? And I imagine that people in
- 6:14Speaker 4: real life are super nice to McAfee, like all the time.
- 6:18Speaker 4: And to act like the internet, right? In whatever form
- 6:22Speaker 4: it is, like represents the people that you see all
- 6:25Speaker 4: the time to me, like is wrong. Cause that's not,
- 6:27Speaker 4: I promise you, that's not the way people treat him
- 6:30Speaker 4: in real life, Sean. They probably treat him like with
- 6:32Speaker 4: the respect that he thinks he deserves and with the
- 6:35Speaker 4: stardom that he has earned. And so the idea that like, that, that,
- 6:41Speaker 4: you're treating the internet as real life to me is
- 6:44Speaker 4: always the wrong way to look at it.
- 6:46Speaker 2: Right.
- 6:46Speaker 4: Again, I get zero things in real life that come
- 6:49Speaker 4: anything close to what I hear or get told about
- 6:50Speaker 4: on the internet from people that don't like me.
- 6:53Speaker 1: Right.
- 6:53Speaker 4: Most people in fact go, Hey man, can I have
- 6:54Speaker 4: a selfie? And even people, even people will meet every
- 6:57Speaker 4: now and then every now and then it was like, Matt,
- 6:58Speaker 4: kind of just like, I don't really like you on
- 7:00Speaker 4: the internet, but you seem cool. Can I get your autograph? Like,
- 7:02Speaker 4: you know, like whatever, it's just not real life. And, and,
- 7:05Speaker 4: and treating it as such, to me is for someone
- 7:08Speaker 4: who's always online and is a public person who, who again,
- 7:13Speaker 4: probably gets a lot of love in real life is
- 7:15Speaker 4: an odd way to approach the internet, man.
- 7:18Speaker 3: The whole thing ends up being really odd.
- 7:20Speaker 2: And I mean, the, the analogy I made this morning
- 7:24Speaker 2: was sometimes you get in an argument with your spouse
- 7:28Speaker 2: and you know that you really didn't do anything wrong,
- 7:31Speaker 2: but you apologize anyway, just to make the argument go away.
- 7:35Speaker 4: So every argument with my spouse?
- 7:38Speaker 3: It's better to be happy than to be right. And,
- 7:41Speaker 3: you know, you can.
- 7:41Speaker 4: Only be one. Sometimes you want to be right.
- 7:43Speaker 3: Yes, I always want to be right.
- 7:45Speaker 2: And so, like, my immature standpoint on this is, no,
- 7:49Speaker 2: die on this hill, fight this battle. But the university
- 7:52Speaker 2: takes the path they took. They issue an apology. We'll
- 7:54Speaker 2: see if anything comes of it ever. I don't think
- 7:57Speaker 2: it will, but.
- 7:58Speaker 3: End of story. Let's talk about the Houston versus Utah game.
- 8:02Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 8:04Speaker 2: I made sure to text you when we were discussing
- 8:07Speaker 2: the blitz that created the fumble that salted the game
- 8:11Speaker 2: away for the University of Utah. You know, we don't have,
- 8:15Speaker 2: I still haven't seen the all 22 angle on it.
- 8:17Speaker 2: I was sitting at the all 22 angle, but I
- 8:19Speaker 2: didn't take my phone out and film. And I was like, okay,
- 8:22Speaker 2: I don't think that that offensive, that left side of
- 8:25Speaker 2: the Houston offensive line can be right.
- 8:28Speaker 3: In that situation.
- 8:29Speaker 2: I think that's why the blitz is designed the way
- 8:31Speaker 2: it's designed, but I wanted to talk to someone who's
- 8:34Speaker 2: a lot better at the advanced blocking concepts than I am.
- 8:36Speaker 2: So I asked you and I'll let you explain for
- 8:39Speaker 2: the listeners so that I'm not saying anything wrong, why
- 8:43Speaker 2: that works so well for Utah.
- 8:44Speaker 4: Do you want all 22 of it? I can send
- 8:46Speaker 4: it to you.
- 8:46Speaker 1: Um, so, okay.
- 8:49Speaker 4: So basically what, what happened is that's like a will
- 8:53Speaker 4: free safety pressure, right? So you're bringing two guys week, right?
- 8:56Speaker 4: You're bringing the will linebacker essentially, um, or in this case,
- 9:00Speaker 4: it might've been like Sam strong safety. Cause I think
- 9:02Speaker 4: you were coming from the, the, the, the field, but
- 9:06Speaker 4: beyond that point is that essentially Utah had ID, excuse me,
- 9:13Speaker 4: Houston ID.
- 9:14Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 9:14Speaker 4: It was from the front side. So basically it was
- 9:15Speaker 4: like Sam strong safety is that they, they, the way
- 9:19Speaker 4: Houston did it was they ID the five guys up
- 9:22Speaker 4: on the line of scrimmage as their five guys, they're
- 9:25Speaker 4: going to block right. The final of its alignment. And then,
- 9:28Speaker 4: you already had a guy sort of on the right
- 9:31Speaker 4: side that was off the ball. That should have been
- 9:32Speaker 4: indicated to the quarterback that that guy was dropping in coverage.
- 9:34Speaker 4: He's not really on the ball. And so those five
- 9:38Speaker 4: guys to block, right? Five for five. And the running
- 9:40Speaker 4: back has the first guy to come of the second
- 9:43Speaker 4: level defenders. Well, you had two come in the second level, right?
- 9:47Speaker 4: So he took the first one, which was the Mike
- 9:49Speaker 4: or the Sam, however you want to ID it. Maybe
- 9:51Speaker 4: it was Mike, Sam. I'm just using words here. So
- 9:55Speaker 4: that left the safety essentially free and no one to
- 9:57Speaker 4: block him. The way you would do this is you would,
- 10:00Speaker 4: if you wanted to block it correctly, you would tell
- 10:03Speaker 4: the line to slide to left because you would disregard
- 10:05Speaker 4: the guy standing up over the right tackle who's very
- 10:07Speaker 4: clearly going to drop. Now, that's obviously a hindsight, but
- 10:10Speaker 4: you could pick it up. You have Utah rushes six
- 10:14Speaker 4: and Houston has six blockers. Actually, rush five. They dropped
- 10:17Speaker 4: two out. So they have enough blockers. You just have
- 10:19Speaker 4: to ID this correctly for the quarterback.
- 10:22Speaker 2: So it's on Connor Wegman to either get the ball
- 10:26Speaker 2: out before he's hit or to make sure the protection
- 10:28Speaker 2: goes the right way.
- 10:29Speaker 4: Correct. Okay.
- 10:32Speaker 3: It was a thing of beauty, though, because.
- 10:33Speaker 4: It didn't happen. It's a great pressure. Yeah, I mean,
- 10:34Speaker 4: it's tough in college to pick this up. And it
- 10:40Speaker 4: made gamblers upset because you guys covered because of this.
- 10:43Speaker 4: I'm sure you're worried about that.
- 10:47Speaker 3: I'm a moron, and I took the over in this game.
- 10:49Speaker 4: So did I.
- 10:50Speaker 2: Because it was the two highest scoring offenses in the
- 10:53Speaker 2: Big 12 Conference going at one another.
- 10:55Speaker 3: And it was, I think, what, 57, 57 and a half? Yeah.
- 10:57Speaker 4: I mean, it's not why I did it, per se.
- 11:01Speaker 4: Utah's red zone defense, Houston's red zone defense is atrocious.
- 11:05Speaker 4: And I just figured that he has to move the ball.
- 11:07Speaker 4: But it just didn't, points didn't happen. Didn't happen. That's
- 11:09Speaker 4: what happens sometimes, you know, just didn't score.
- 11:12Speaker 2: Did you see the other favorite highlight from Utah's film
- 11:15Speaker 2: in this game in the bull rush sack by number 90,
- 11:18Speaker 2: Jai Moy, the short de-tackle?
- 11:20Speaker 4: I did not see it. Should I look that up?
- 11:22Speaker 2: You should look it up because there's a guy like
- 11:25Speaker 2: your size who the Utah de-tackle doesn't actually touch the quarterback.
- 11:30Speaker 2: He just bull rushes the guard back into the quarterback.
- 11:34Speaker 2: One of those.
- 11:34Speaker 4: That's embarrassing, yeah.
- 11:35Speaker 2: Yeah, throws him, uses him as a weapon. And, you know,
- 11:39Speaker 2: of course that never happened to Jeff Schwartz.
- 11:42Speaker 4: I did not get beat that way. I have been
- 11:44Speaker 4: beat before, believe it or not. I know it's shocking
- 11:46Speaker 4: to learn that, but it has happened in the past.
- 11:49Speaker 4: It was a good win for you guys and your
- 11:52Speaker 4: rival loss. I know people on the station do root
- 11:54Speaker 4: for BYU as well, but that was a good weekend
- 11:56Speaker 4: for Utah football. A buddy of my podcast, Bear Betts,
- 12:00Speaker 4: last week got a lot of heat from BYU fans.
- 12:02Speaker 4: He said that my power rankings, I don't have BYU
- 12:05Speaker 4: in the top 10. I just don't. BYU fans, you
- 12:08Speaker 4: can imagine, were not happy about that. And they killed him.
- 12:11Speaker 4: And he had a Saturday night on the Internet that
- 12:14Speaker 4: made me jealous. Just like AI graphics of BYU fans
- 12:20Speaker 4: trash-talking him, and he put a gravestone out there. What
- 12:23Speaker 4: a night for him.
- 12:25Speaker 2: Just life on the Internet. So BYU loses to UCF.
- 12:30Speaker 2: And the end-of-game scenario in that was as disgusting and
- 12:34Speaker 2: weird and poorly officiated as anything I've seen.
- 12:39Speaker 4: Is there a question?
- 12:41Speaker 3: I thought you were going to start talking.
- 12:43Speaker 4: Basically, I'm tired of it. Is that what we're talking about? Yeah.
- 12:47Speaker 4: I'm tired of the officiating errors that are procedural, right? Like, again,
- 12:54Speaker 4: I tell this all the time. Like, you want a holding? Whatever, man.
- 12:57Speaker 4: You're going to miss a holding. You're going to miss
- 12:58Speaker 4: a passing interference. But we have enough technology and people
- 13:05Speaker 4: with the know-how to and the rules experts to get
- 13:09Speaker 4: it right. Right. Like you have stopped the game. Listen
- 13:13Speaker 4: to the big, you know, the, the big 12, like
- 13:17Speaker 4: in your earpiece and get it right, man.
- 13:19Speaker 3: Yes.
- 13:20Speaker 4: Like just get it right.
- 13:21Speaker 3: Right.
- 13:22Speaker 4: I mean, I don't understand Sean, get it right.
- 13:24Speaker 2: And instead they do this like weird runoff thing. They
- 13:29Speaker 2: end the game prematurely, which is the second time this
- 13:31Speaker 2: has happened in a BYU game this year. And then
- 13:35Speaker 2: it felt like the roughing the kicker penalty was a
- 13:37Speaker 2: make-up call.
- 13:38Speaker 4: I don't know if I believe in make-up calls, but
- 13:41Speaker 4: I think that sometimes referees look for things to call,
- 13:46Speaker 4: and it felt like they were looking to call that.
- 13:47Speaker 4: I mean, that was so incidental, right? You basically got
- 13:51Speaker 4: blown up. You blew it off with a tackle and
- 13:52Speaker 4: rolled over him on the kicker. That did not feel
- 13:54Speaker 4: like the spirit of what that rule is about. I'm
- 13:57Speaker 4: sort of big into the idea of, like, there's the
- 14:00Speaker 4: spirit behind the rule, right? Like the spirit behind that
- 14:02Speaker 4: rule is not that penalty. Like that's ridiculous.
- 14:04Speaker 2: The letter of the law is broken on every single
- 14:06Speaker 2: play in football, right?
- 14:08Speaker 4: Correct.
- 14:08Speaker 2: Someone is being held on every play, but did the
- 14:11Speaker 2: holding impede your motion toward the play?
- 14:14Speaker 4: Correct.
- 14:14Speaker 3: And then you can call it right. That's the spirit
- 14:17Speaker 3: of that rule.
- 14:18Speaker 1: Yes.
- 14:18Speaker 4: And I just felt like that was not what that
- 14:20Speaker 4: was about. But I think to the broader point, like
- 14:22Speaker 4: I think BYU is good, not great. I think a
- 14:26Speaker 4: lot of teams are good, not great this year, by
- 14:27Speaker 4: the way. Um, And we have seen this spot play
- 14:30Speaker 4: out all season, Sean. They're not the first team to
- 14:33Speaker 4: lose in this spot. You win a big home game,
- 14:35Speaker 4: the next week you come out and lose on the road.
- 14:38Speaker 4: It's happened probably 10 times so far this season. And
- 14:42Speaker 4: it's a tough spot. It's a tough spot, man.
- 14:44Speaker 2: So how does Utah avoid that same pitfall? Because they
- 14:47Speaker 2: just got a big win at home against Houston. First
- 14:49Speaker 2: ranked win, first real test of the season. College game
- 14:53Speaker 2: day was here. Distraction and controversy that I don't think
- 14:56Speaker 2: affects the team at all, honestly. But now you've got
- 14:58Speaker 2: to go. And Cincinnati's also coming off their best win
- 15:02Speaker 2: of the year and feeling confident. Their defense overall is
- 15:06Speaker 2: pretty bad. But how does Utah avoid falling into the
- 15:09Speaker 2: same trap that just caught BYU?
- 15:10Speaker 4: Well, that's the thing. Cincinnati's also coming off a big win.
- 15:14Speaker 4: Then they beat Texas Tech. And so I think you
- 15:16Speaker 4: feel pretty good about just, you know, they're in the
- 15:20Speaker 4: same boat you guys are, right? They're obviously at home
- 15:23Speaker 4: when you're not. But they're off a big win as well.
- 15:26Speaker 4: I think that's valid to sort of, you know, the
- 15:31Speaker 4: more film we're getting on Utah offense, the less points
- 15:32Speaker 4: there are being scorched on. And I think I've got
- 15:35Speaker 4: to evaluate why that is and how, you know, if
- 15:38Speaker 4: you get to a road game like this and you
- 15:40Speaker 4: have a couple turnovers, your defense gives up a score
- 15:42Speaker 4: here and there, like, is our offense able to ramp
- 15:44Speaker 4: back up to what it was the first couple? This
- 15:47Speaker 4: is sort of my concern at all times. I think
- 15:49Speaker 4: I've told you, like, with a little bit of the
- 15:51Speaker 4: gadget stuff, like, eventually teams figure that out. Because you've
- 15:55Speaker 4: only won so many plays out of those gadget formations, right?
- 15:58Speaker 4: And what do you have on offense when it's not
- 16:01Speaker 4: gadget time and when you can't do the two quarterbacks
- 16:04Speaker 4: and you can't do some fun, funky things because first
- 16:07Speaker 4: down hasn't been as good. So now you're in longer
- 16:10Speaker 4: distances and you have to figure out real offense at times.
- 16:13Speaker 4: So I think it's worth sort of figuring out maybe
- 16:15Speaker 4: for Utah, like is the offense sort of stalled out
- 16:18Speaker 4: a little bit? How do they get some points in
- 16:20Speaker 4: this game? But to say I don't think it's very
- 16:22Speaker 4: good even though they beat Texas Tech.
- 16:24Speaker 2: The last two games, they've gone away from the two-quarterback thing.
- 16:29Speaker 2: I think Bird Ficklin got one touch in the game
- 16:32Speaker 2: against Houston. So is that other teams have figured out
- 16:36Speaker 2: how to stop it or them just saying that's a
- 16:39Speaker 2: gimmick and you don't need to use it?
- 16:41Speaker 4: I imagine it's probably a little bit of both. I
- 16:43Speaker 4: think that, again, there's always a place you can run
- 16:45Speaker 4: out of that, right, Sean? And you're basically deciding that
- 16:51Speaker 4: one player on offense doesn't matter. Like you're using up
- 16:55Speaker 4: an offensive position for a guy that can only do
- 16:58Speaker 4: a certain number of things at the snap. It eventually
- 17:00Speaker 4: becomes easy to defend, right? If I know you're only
- 17:02Speaker 4: going to do– if you're that player, right, you're either
- 17:05Speaker 4: going to run the ball on some sort of option-type play, right,
- 17:10Speaker 4: or you're going to pass the ball going to your left.
- 17:13Speaker 4: It feels like a pretty– if I'm a defense, if
- 17:18Speaker 4: I know what you're doing, the two things you can
- 17:19Speaker 4: do it, probably bodes pretty well for my ability to
- 17:21Speaker 4: stop it.
- 17:22Speaker 2: I guess i'm an idiot because i i view it
- 17:24Speaker 2: the other way because i'm like okay he he can
- 17:28Speaker 2: take the snap and just play quarterback directly and i
- 17:31Speaker 2: guess then you're you're wasting devon for like because that
- 17:35Speaker 2: you're probably not going to throw it to him although
- 17:37Speaker 2: they have right you can have him be a receiver
- 17:40Speaker 2: they've done that with with bird ficklin after making it
- 17:43Speaker 2: look like he was going to play quarterback but i
- 17:45Speaker 2: think Maybe there's a decision that we have good enough receivers.
- 17:48Speaker 3: Let's not make this quarterback be a receiver.
- 17:51Speaker 2: So I guess it does come down to just being
- 17:52Speaker 2: an option run nine times out of 10.
- 17:55Speaker 4: Correct. And I think, again, there's nothing wrong with, with
- 17:58Speaker 4: some of those plays, but that's why these never last
- 17:59Speaker 4: a whole season because you just teams, you can figure
- 18:02Speaker 4: it out, just get figured out. So, um, yeah, I
- 18:06Speaker 4: think Utah's, you know, learning to transition to something else
- 18:09Speaker 4: and we'll see what it looks like this week, but now, uh,
- 18:11Speaker 4: sets up a, you know, pretty, pretty, uh, Comfortable place
- 18:14Speaker 4: for Utah to be a Big Ten champion, so a
- 18:17Speaker 4: Big 12 champion, right? Obviously, you'll have an opportunity to
- 18:20Speaker 4: play in that game most likely if you beat BYU,
- 18:23Speaker 4: or BYU loses another game here down the stretch. How
- 18:25Speaker 4: do you feel about the... When I saw the original
- 18:30Speaker 4: announcement for the Holy War, I thought it was 10 p.m. Eastern.
- 18:33Speaker 2: Yeah, it's 10 a.m. Mountain Time, noon Eastern.
- 18:37Speaker 4: With game day or no game day?
- 18:40Speaker 3: Everyone thinks that game day is going to Notre Dame, Miami.
- 18:42Speaker 4: Right, so why are they playing your game so early then?
- 18:45Speaker 2: So here's where it gets difficult, all right? Now, let
- 18:50Speaker 2: me throw out the disclaimer. The school and the conference
- 18:54Speaker 2: do not get to make the decision. The networks make
- 18:56Speaker 2: the decision by themselves. However, there's been angst expressed by
- 19:02Speaker 2: the Big 12 Conference and by the University of Utah that, hey,
- 19:07Speaker 2: this is five night games.
- 19:09Speaker 3: The country's not watching us. And that's true.
- 19:12Speaker 2: Like the Houston-Utah game was a great game. It was
- 19:16Speaker 2: a top 15 game. Nobody on the East Coast watched
- 19:18Speaker 2: it because it was at 1030. It kicked off at
- 19:23Speaker 2: 1030 Eastern, right? So both the conference and the university
- 19:26Speaker 2: have expressed like, hey, can we spread these things out
- 19:28Speaker 2: a little bit more? Can we not have every one
- 19:30Speaker 2: of our games, especially the important ones, as these night games?
- 19:34Speaker 2: And then the alternative window for the Holy War, which
- 19:38Speaker 2: will be a top 10 matchup, a rivalry game, top
- 19:40Speaker 2: 10 rivalry game, Never happened in the history of this
- 19:43Speaker 2: particular rivalry. The national window where everyone can watch that
- 19:48Speaker 2: is either the... five 30 Eastern kickoff time. And that's
- 19:52Speaker 2: where Notre Dame Miami is, or you can put it,
- 19:56Speaker 2: you can put it with, uh, in the morning. And
- 19:58Speaker 2: so they chose to put it in the morning and
- 20:01Speaker 2: I'm torn on it because I guess you want it
- 20:04Speaker 2: from a conference perspective. You want Utah BYU to be
- 20:07Speaker 2: watched by Jeff Schwartz in North Carolina. But also, Jeff
- 20:11Speaker 2: Schwartz in North Carolina doesn't have to care about this game.
- 20:13Speaker 2: This game is ours, man. Maximize it for the locals.
- 20:16Speaker 2: But we've been doing that for 30 years.
- 20:18Speaker 3: I don't know. It feels like it's a lose-lose.
- 20:21Speaker 4: Because Jeff Schwartz in Carolina definitely did not stay awake
- 20:23Speaker 4: for the game Saturday night. Of course. But to be fair,
- 20:27Speaker 4: I didn't step for Oregon and Nebraska either. So, look,
- 20:29Speaker 4: I didn't miss very much on that. Man, oh, buddy.
- 20:32Speaker 4: That's not good, Eugene.
- 20:35Speaker 2: We'll get to that here in a second. But 10 a.m.,
- 20:39Speaker 2: mountain time kick.
- 20:41Speaker 4: You wake up later than that most days. How are
- 20:42Speaker 4: you going to be able to get to the game?
- 20:44Speaker 2: Don't put that evil on me, all right? I have
- 20:47Speaker 2: young children. If I get to sleep in until 7 a.m.,
- 20:50Speaker 2: I'm grateful.
- 20:50Speaker 4: I heard someone, a buddy of my life told me
- 20:53Speaker 4: he took his kid to play travel ball in Tennessee,
- 20:56Speaker 4: and they woke up Monday. He's like, I just woke
- 20:58Speaker 4: up at 8.30. I go, 8.30? If I wake up
- 20:59Speaker 4: at 7.10... On a Sunday, I feel like I've slept
- 21:06Speaker 4: in half the day.
- 21:07Speaker 2: Yes, it feels, you're just like, oh my gosh, I
- 21:10Speaker 2: feel wonderful about this. And now that it's getting dark early,
- 21:14Speaker 2: it's just the worst because you wake up and it's
- 21:17Speaker 2: dark and you're like, oh man, why can't I sleep longer?
- 21:20Speaker 4: Has it started snowing yet?
- 21:23Speaker 3: Just on the top of the mountains.
- 21:25Speaker 4: Oh, that sounds miserable.
- 21:27Speaker 3: Well, it's been nice here. We need the water, Jeff.
- 21:32Speaker 4: You're on drought?
- 21:33Speaker 3: Yeah, we had one of the driest winters on record
- 21:36Speaker 3: last week.
- 21:36Speaker 4: You know what? This is not the program for my
- 21:38Speaker 4: discussion on how the climate's changed a lot in the
- 21:40Speaker 4: last two years. We'll do that another time. Okay.
- 21:43Speaker 2: The coaching carousel is spinning already, including at your alma mater.
- 21:48Speaker 2: Oregon is moving on, and they're going to hire a
- 21:50Speaker 2: new offensive coordinator. Baylor has a head coaching vacancy. NC
- 21:54Speaker 2: State has a head coaching vacancy. Maryland.
- 21:58Speaker 4: Maryland.
- 21:59Speaker 2: Maryland, yeah, we're keeping a close eye, especially on the
- 22:01Speaker 2: Baylor one because it's a conference opponent and likely candidates. Apparently,
- 22:06Speaker 2: Lincoln Riley's name is in that conversation. I don't believe
- 22:09Speaker 2: that one. Maybe Dan Mullen from UNLV. Some of the
- 22:12Speaker 2: usual suspects are being mentioned, but how big a domino
- 22:17Speaker 2: is Baylor to fall? Certainly not the biggest one we're
- 22:19Speaker 2: going to get this offseason, but it's a big job.
- 22:22Speaker 4: I heard Lincoln Riley's getting a lifetime contract from USC, though.
- 22:25Speaker 4: I heard that might work out for him, so I
- 22:28Speaker 4: hope he doesn't leave.
- 22:29Speaker 1: USC.
- 22:30Speaker 4: What if they got a good coach? What if they
- 22:32Speaker 4: got Jason Eck and they became physical again? Can you
- 22:35Speaker 4: imagine that?
- 22:36Speaker 3: What if Kalani Satake takes the USC job?
- 22:39Speaker 4: I don't think he's leaving BYU now. Why would he leave?
- 22:42Speaker 4: He had a chance to go last year and take
- 22:43Speaker 4: all these jobs. Do you really think he'd leave for USC?
- 22:46Speaker 2: Well, I don't think so because I think BYU figured
- 22:48Speaker 2: out the feud.
- 22:49Speaker 3: I think that.
- 22:52Speaker 2: He was beefing with the athletic director and they took
- 22:55Speaker 2: that off his plate. And he's not the kind of
- 22:58Speaker 2: guy who's going to leave his alma mater in a place,
- 23:01Speaker 2: you know, he's a member of the faith, obviously. And
- 23:04Speaker 2: it means a lot to him. I don't think he's
- 23:05Speaker 2: going to leave to chase money. So I think that,
- 23:09Speaker 2: I think that USC would have to back up a
- 23:11Speaker 2: Brinks truck or BYU would have to screw up again.
- 23:13Speaker 3: And I don't think they're gonna.
- 23:14Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 23:16Speaker 4: So I don't expect that to be a thing for USC.
- 23:18Speaker 4: It's going to be an interesting cycle, man. There's not
- 23:21Speaker 4: a lot of big names that are, you think like
- 23:25Speaker 4: surefire head coaches, right? Like, The Indiana coordinators probably are
- 23:29Speaker 4: going to get a look, right, if they want, but
- 23:30Speaker 4: they don't have to. They don't have to go anywhere.
- 23:34Speaker 4: You're going to mention Jason Eck from New Mexico probably
- 23:36Speaker 4: going somewhere. You have to think that maybe Charles Huff
- 23:39Speaker 4: of Memphis is going after one year at Memphis, going somewhere,
- 23:42Speaker 4: a bigger job. There's not a lot of big time.
- 23:44Speaker 4: There's some retreads. I think Brian Kelly might end up
- 23:46Speaker 4: going somewhere. There's some retread names, and there's a coordinator
- 23:50Speaker 4: or two we don't really see coming, but it doesn't
- 23:53Speaker 4: feel like a cycle right now that we have a
- 23:55Speaker 4: lot of known commodities for.
- 23:58Speaker 3: If USC has a vacancy, will they call Bob Chesney?
- 24:03Speaker 4: Yeah, I don't think he'd take it, though.
- 24:06Speaker 2: Why?
- 24:08Speaker 4: Why would he take it? I mean, he's doing fine
- 24:10Speaker 4: at UCLA. I don't think he'll be at UCLA or
- 24:12Speaker 4: USC much longer, but I don't think he'll take the
- 24:14Speaker 4: USC job. USC's probably going to call Urban Meyer first.
- 24:17Speaker 4: I imagine he's going to say no. And then they're
- 24:20Speaker 4: going to try to find the biggest name they can
- 24:22Speaker 4: find next. We'll see.
- 24:26Speaker 2: When the carousel gets spinning, it always intrigues me.
- 24:30Speaker 3: Shout out Dave Aranda.
- 24:31Speaker 2: He was awesome when he was a coordinator at Utah State.
- 24:34Speaker 2: Hope it works out for him. The Niners finally lost
- 24:39Speaker 2: in the NFL. Should I be worried?
- 24:42Speaker 4: No. It's so funny. The fans of teams after one
- 24:46Speaker 4: NFL 6-1, Chiefs are 5-1. It's over. The injury thing
- 24:50Speaker 4: is real, though, for the Niners. Shoot, you guys have
- 24:52Speaker 4: nobody healthy, man, but No, it's NFL, man. It's one weekend.
- 24:58Speaker 2: How much are you watching this Brewers-Rays World Series?
- 25:02Speaker 3: Jeff, for people who don't know, Jeff is a big
- 25:04Speaker 3: baseball guy.
- 25:05Speaker 4: I've watched a little bit. It's been during football. It
- 25:08Speaker 4: was on during Monday Night Football last night. I'll watch
- 25:11Speaker 4: more tonight because it's obviously a clutching game. I am
- 25:14Speaker 4: looking forward to watching the WNBA at 1230 on Thursday afternoon.
- 25:18Speaker 3: We were just talking about that.
- 25:20Speaker 4: Dude, I... I watch WNBA. I mean, I bet on it.
- 25:24Speaker 4: It certainly helps. But A, some of the games, like
- 25:27Speaker 4: last night's game was just atrocious. It was so poorly played.
- 25:31Speaker 4: No one played, but whatever. It's just such poor leadership.
- 25:35Speaker 4: The idea that they didn't have a plan at all
- 25:40Speaker 4: for this is just so telling, right? Like no foresight. Like,
- 25:43Speaker 4: you know, people point out to other teams who are NBA, yeah,
- 25:46Speaker 4: they're tenants of those arenas. Atlanta doesn't play in this arena.
- 25:49Speaker 4: It's not their home arena. And they just had no idea.
- 25:53Speaker 4: They didn't think one day ahead at a time, right, Sean?
- 25:57Speaker 4: That's it. They didn't have any thoughts and plans for this.
- 25:59Speaker 4: And also, the other dumb thing about this thing is
- 26:01Speaker 4: that people are like, it'd be a good PR move
- 26:03Speaker 4: for the Hawks to give up their home game. No,
- 26:07Speaker 4: it's not. Who cares? More Hawks tickets? Are they going
- 26:12Speaker 4: to sell more tickets because they gave up a home
- 26:13Speaker 4: game for the dream? It's their arena. It's their schedule.
- 26:17Speaker 4: Why should they change? Some of the takes on this
- 26:19Speaker 4: are just horrendously bad. The Hawks owe it to them
- 26:25Speaker 4: to move their game and move their schedule around and
- 26:28Speaker 4: cancel their game because the WNBA didn't prepare to have
- 26:35Speaker 4: a game six in a proper location.
- 26:37Speaker 3: It's wild. Before I let you go, Quentin Nelson gets
- 26:42Speaker 3: traded to the Seahawks.
- 26:45Speaker 4: What do you think it is?
- 26:46Speaker 3: I mean, he's an absolute monster.
- 26:48Speaker 4: Still playing at a very high level. Interesting trade. Seahawks,
- 26:52Speaker 4: be aggressive, right? This little window they have right here.
- 26:55Speaker 4: Quinn Nelson will play left guard. I imagine Zabel might
- 26:57Speaker 4: move to center right guard, and they're just going for it. Look,
- 27:00Speaker 4: the run game has struggled this year without Kenneth Walker,
- 27:03Speaker 4: as we know, and they have some other injuries, right?
- 27:05Speaker 4: Price is hurt, beat up, but Charbonnet's out. So I
- 27:09Speaker 4: think Quinn Nelson does two things, right? One, it makes
- 27:11Speaker 4: your team just tougher. He's just a tough SOB, right?
- 27:13Speaker 4: But also, too, I'd imagine it just allows your run
- 27:16Speaker 4: game to be a little bit better until those guys
- 27:17Speaker 4: get back. It was cheap. Third round pick next year,
- 27:21Speaker 4: like in the fifth or something of the year after that.
- 27:23Speaker 4: For an all-pro player like this, obviously he's on a
- 27:26Speaker 4: contract year, so I'm not sure the trade signified they're
- 27:30Speaker 4: going to sign him to a long-term contract, but you
- 27:33Speaker 4: can sign him to a deal. Now you have a
- 27:35Speaker 4: left guard, an all-pro type player for a long time.
- 27:40Speaker 2: Alright, overtime again, as I usually am, so Got to
- 27:44Speaker 2: let you go. Appreciate you giving us some time this week.
- 27:46Speaker 3: Take care, buddy.
- 27:47Speaker 4: Have a good week.
- 27:48Speaker 1: Bye.
- 27:49Speaker 3: That's Jeff Schwartz
- 27:51Speaker 2: Betting insider, college football insider, NFL football insider as well.
