- 0:00Dot com. Welcome to the Daily Quote, the
- 0:05podcast designed to kick start your day in a positive way.
- 0:11I'm your host, Sandra McGivern, and this episode is brought to
- 0:14you by the Great News Podcast because good news should be
- 0:18heard. And the link is right here in
- 0:21the show notes. Today's quote comes from Lori
- 0:26Buchanan, holistic health practitioner, transformational
- 0:31life coach and award-winning author whose entire career has
- 0:35been built around 1 Foundational belief.
- 0:39Not a theory, not an idea, a daily operating principle.
- 0:45She once said, what we don't change, we choose.
- 0:51This quote has only 6 words, and they may be the most
- 0:55uncomfortable combination of 6 words in your vocabulary.
- 1:00Think about that for a moment. What we don't change, we choose,
- 1:05not what we can't change or what circumstances have forced upon
- 1:10us what we don't change. That distinction is everything.
- 1:16Most of us have a running list of things in our lives that we
- 1:19don't like. The job that drains us, The
- 1:23habit we know is holding us back.
- 1:26The relationship dynamic that keeps repeating.
- 1:29The goal we keep saying we'll pursue when the timing is
- 1:33better. The conversation we've been
- 1:36avoiding. The version of ourselves we keep
- 1:40promising to grow into next month, next year, when things
- 1:46settle down. And alongside that list, we
- 1:50carry a set of stories about why nothing on it has changed yet.
- 1:55The timing isn't right. The circumstances are
- 1:59complicated. We're waiting for a sign, for
- 2:03motivation, for the right moment to arrive.
- 2:07The stories are comfortable. And they are, in the most
- 2:11important sense, a fiction. Because if there's something in
- 2:16your life you don't like and you're not doing anything about
- 2:20it, you've chosen it. Every day you don't act, you are
- 2:25silently saying, yes, I'll take some more of this, please.
- 2:29And when you think of it that way, it changes your
- 2:33perspective. At least it does for me.
- 2:37And Buchanan spent her career offering exactly this kind of
- 2:41clarity to the people she worked with, not because it was
- 2:45comfortable, but because it was the only thing that actually
- 2:49helped. The insight is that ignoring
- 2:53something doesn't minimize its impact on your life.
- 2:56In fact, ignoring it often increases its impact because it
- 3:01winds up operating out of your awareness and therefore out of
- 3:06your influence or control. The thing you refuse to look at
- 3:10doesn't shrink in the dark. It grows.
- 3:14There's an important distinction worth making here in Buchanan
- 3:17makes it herself. Some things are genuinely hard
- 3:22to change. Illness, loss, Systemic
- 3:25circumstances beyond any individual's control.
- 3:30This quote isn't a dismissal of real difficulty.
- 3:33But even in those cases, there's still something you can control.
- 3:38Your mindset, your effort, your response.
- 3:42You can't always change everything, but you can change
- 3:46how you show up in it. The question the quote is really
- 3:50asking isn't why you haven't changed yet.
- 3:54It's quieter and more useful than that.
- 3:57It's simply, is this a choice? Because if it is even a passive
- 4:031, even an unconscious one, it can be made differently.
- 4:09There are things I tolerated far longer than I should have in my
- 4:13work, in my habits and how I was spending my time.
- 4:17Not because I couldn't see them clearly, but because changing
- 4:21them felt harder than enduring them.
- 4:24And Buchanan's quote has a way of cutting through that
- 4:27reasoning very precisely. The enduring wasn't neutral.
- 4:32It was a choice, one I kept remaking every day that I didn't
- 4:37act. The moment I started seeing
- 4:40inaction as a decision rather than a pause before a decision,
- 4:45everything became clearer and considerably less comfortable.
- 4:50Which is exactly the point. So here's the question, and it's
- 4:54worth asking slowly, Honestly, across every corner of your
- 4:59life. What are you currently not
- 5:02changing that you've been telling yourself you simply
- 5:06haven't got around to yet because Lori Buchanan is asking
- 5:10you to see it for what it actually is.
- 5:13Not a pause, not a delay. A choice made fresh every single
- 5:19day that you let it stand. You can make a different one
- 5:24starting today. What we don't change, we choose.
- 5:30Choose deliberately. That's it for today.
- 5:34I'm Andrew McGivern, signing off for now, but I'll be back
- 5:39tomorrow. Same pod time, same pod station
- 5:45with another daily quote.
