Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: This is Greg from Carbam and we are going on
- 0:03Speaker 1: tour with Carnival and Tessa Act in Australia in July,
- 0:08Speaker 1: so get your ass out of here and come to
- 0:10Speaker 1: see this play.
- 0:12Speaker 2: Fantastic great, thanks for joining us today.
- 0:15Speaker 3: Thanks for having me well.
- 0:16Speaker 2: Pleasure brother. As you say, cow bomb, I headed to
- 0:18Speaker 2: Australia for the first time. Ella is July for running
- 0:21Speaker 2: shows with test wrecting caountable. So I guess the big
- 0:24Speaker 2: question is, boy, have you neglected us for so long?
- 0:28Speaker 4: It's really far. I don't know if you've flown to
- 0:29Speaker 4: New York and that's how far it is.
- 0:31Speaker 1: I did the flight a year and a half ago,
- 0:33Speaker 1: and it was screwed up because like going there, I
- 0:36Speaker 1: was so excited to go that I will, I will.
- 0:40Speaker 1: I got off the plane, I went to bed. It
- 0:42Speaker 1: was like maybe two o'clock in the afternoon. I got
- 0:45Speaker 1: up at five and I was like, I'm good. Like
- 0:47Speaker 1: I didn't sleep on the plane, but I'm like, I'm good.
- 0:49Speaker 1: And then I went, you know, we went to Sydney,
- 0:51Speaker 1: went to Melbourne, we went to Brisbane and it was wonderful.
- 0:55Speaker 1: But flying back and then like that jet lag, like
- 0:58Speaker 1: when I was home, was the worst jet leg I've
- 1:00Speaker 1: ever had in mindset. It was like a week of
- 1:02Speaker 1: just being like perpetually pissed off andran curranky.
- 1:06Speaker 2: So a lot of people think jet leg is a myths,
- 1:10Speaker 2: but when you when you find so much it is
- 1:13Speaker 2: definitely real.
- 1:14Speaker 3: It's crazy. It's absolutely crazy.
- 1:16Speaker 1: Yeah, it's just the not the not sleeping and like
- 1:19Speaker 1: like being tense on the plane, Like you can't really
- 1:21Speaker 1: relax unless you're like a business class, so it's pretty brutal.
- 1:24Speaker 2: No, this is your first time coming out of you mate,
- 1:27Speaker 2: So when you go to a country for the first time,
- 1:29Speaker 2: do you do your research? Like, do you find out
- 1:31Speaker 2: what to expect? Was that a reconnaissance mission time he
- 1:34Speaker 2: came over?
- 1:35Speaker 1: So that was when I was I was a couple
- 1:38Speaker 1: of shows with Ben Frost, who is a composer. He
- 1:40Speaker 1: did like the music for Dark, like that show on Netflix,
- 1:43Speaker 1: and he does a bunch of other stuff. He did
- 1:44Speaker 1: something with I heard about him with Raised by Wolves,
- 1:48Speaker 1: which was a show on HBO that Ridley Scott was
- 1:51Speaker 1: a producer of and directed a couple of episodes. That's
- 1:53Speaker 1: an amazing show and the music was so like bizarre.
- 1:57Speaker 1: I was like, I have to know who did this
- 1:59Speaker 1: music and h I followed him, Ben followed me, and
- 2:03Speaker 1: then we just wound up talking. We made a record together,
- 2:07Speaker 1: we did a bunch of shows together in Europe, and
- 2:08Speaker 1: then he's from Australia. I believe he's from Melbourne. So
- 2:12Speaker 1: he's like, would you like to go and do a
- 2:13Speaker 1: couple of shows there? And I was it was amazing Sydney,
- 2:17Speaker 1: Brisbane and Melbourne and it was absolutely amazing.
- 2:20Speaker 2: So you reported back to the band and show him
- 2:22Speaker 2: what to expect or is it going to be yet?
- 2:25Speaker 4: No? No, no.
- 2:25Speaker 1: I told him like we got to come here asaff like,
- 2:27Speaker 1: we got to do it.
- 2:28Speaker 4: So that's why we're doing it, Jess.
- 2:30Speaker 2: I guess the flip side of that man is not
- 2:32Speaker 2: what he really knowics what to expect from you or others.
- 2:34Speaker 2: So brought us through a typical Cabo blog show and
- 2:37Speaker 2: what we can.
- 2:37Speaker 3: Expect pretty much.
- 2:38Speaker 4: I mean we're used to it. I mean that that
- 2:40Speaker 4: was like how we cut our teeth.
- 2:42Speaker 1: In the scenes, so to speak. Uh, you know, we
- 2:45Speaker 1: usually we get the people just as alms. Like we
- 2:47Speaker 1: always say, like as long as they're in the room
- 2:48Speaker 1: and they're watching us, it's fine. But they're definitely expecting
- 2:52Speaker 1: like deer in the headlights while we're playing, but they're
- 2:55Speaker 1: gonna dig it.
- 2:56Speaker 2: No, isn't he come out of with Carnival and Chester?
- 2:59Speaker 2: But what's your relationship? We candivals to be invited on
- 3:01Speaker 2: tri with him.
- 3:03Speaker 1: Our booking agent actually the I mean, and also we've
- 3:05Speaker 1: gotten the opportunity before, I believe, like I think their
- 3:08Speaker 1: European run and our schedules got we couldn't work it
- 3:11Speaker 1: out schedule wise, but you know, obviously like we're fans
- 3:15Speaker 1: of them, they're fans of us, and you know, we've
- 3:17Speaker 1: been chit chatting a little bit, uh through the DMS
- 3:19Speaker 1: and stuff, and.
- 3:21Speaker 3: It just the timing was right and we're the time.
- 3:23Speaker 1: He was actually kind of messed up because Mike, our singer,
- 3:27Speaker 1: his wife just had a baby, so literally like maybe
- 3:31Speaker 1: a month.
- 3:31Speaker 3: Ago, maybe five or six weeks ago. But we were like, man, like,
- 3:35Speaker 3: we gotta do it.
- 3:36Speaker 1: Can you can you please make it happen, And he
- 3:38Speaker 1: was gracious enough to be to be able to like, yeah,
- 3:40Speaker 1: I can go for two weeks.
- 3:42Speaker 2: I'll bet you know. His wife he's son, I really
- 3:43Speaker 2: really don't want to go with and he said he's
- 3:45Speaker 2: gone get me out of here.
- 3:48Speaker 3: When you get to scooph we're on the plane.
- 3:51Speaker 2: I'm just saying someone's gone along with the shows and
- 3:54Speaker 2: they don't know who Cowboys. What's three of your songs?
- 3:56Speaker 2: They can listen to you so they get to know
- 3:58Speaker 2: the band a bit better.
- 4:00Speaker 3: Hmmm, that's a good question.
- 4:02Speaker 1: I always thinks the way I always listen, like discover
- 4:05Speaker 1: new bands, just to spotify whatever is on the top,
- 4:08Speaker 1: because it always just seems to like resonate.
- 4:10Speaker 4: I don't know what it is like.
- 4:12Speaker 1: Usually, like if I if I hear a song on
- 4:15Speaker 1: the top of Spotify and I don't like it, and
- 4:16Speaker 1: I try to dig in for other songs, that doesn't work.
- 4:18Speaker 4: But if I really love one of those.
- 4:20Speaker 1: Songs, usually like I like the rest of the catalog too,
- 4:22Speaker 1: So I would just encourage that. If you are into
- 4:25Speaker 1: like the really death metally avant garde stuff, I would
- 4:29Speaker 1: start with our earlier stuff. And if you're more into
- 4:31Speaker 1: like gent more prog stuff, maybe not not full progue,
- 4:36Speaker 1: but like has elements of progressive stuff, I would go
- 4:39Speaker 1: to our new material like mortial or meta.
- 4:41Speaker 2: Yeah, very cool. Your music's pretty complex and polished, right, Like,
- 4:46Speaker 2: is it difficult to reproduce that live? Uh?
- 4:49Speaker 3: Yes, some parts for sure.
- 4:51Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 4:51Speaker 1: I mean we usually try to jam at least four
- 4:54Speaker 1: to six weeks before we do a tour, just to
- 4:56Speaker 1: make sure everything's tightened up. But after playing for so long,
- 5:00Speaker 1: when we have a shorthand for how to communicate rhythmic
- 5:02Speaker 1: ideas together, and it always comes together in the end.
- 5:06Speaker 2: Yeah, musically, you've got so much gone on, men, So
- 5:10Speaker 2: how do you find the balance into creative pricess? Like
- 5:12Speaker 2: how do you know I've gone too far in one
- 5:13Speaker 2: direction or not fire in another?
- 5:15Speaker 3: Or that's a really good question.
- 5:20Speaker 1: I feel like whenever I write, I do the majority
- 5:24Speaker 1: of writing these days. Like back in the day, it
- 5:26Speaker 1: was all of us working together in a room, but
- 5:28Speaker 1: now we all have responsibilities, so I do other majority
- 5:31Speaker 1: of this stuff. When the song starts, I start with
- 5:35Speaker 1: like an idea and put it on the shelf for
- 5:38Speaker 1: like a month or two, and come back to it
- 5:40Speaker 1: and see if I like it.
- 5:41Speaker 3: And if I like something, whether.
- 5:43Speaker 1: It's technical or it's you know, you know, knuckle dragon
- 5:47Speaker 1: like really simple stuff, I'll just start working on a
- 5:50Speaker 1: song with their When I run out of ideas, that's
- 5:53Speaker 1: when I usually know what song's done like that, or
- 5:56Speaker 1: if I if I put the song again on the
- 5:58Speaker 1: shelf for another month and listen to it and I
- 5:59Speaker 1: don't find anything wrong with it.
- 6:00Speaker 3: Then I'm like, Okay, it's good.
- 6:02Speaker 1: But usually it's like like we have so much ideas
- 6:06Speaker 1: that we're always working on, and they're always we don't
- 6:09Speaker 1: It's not like that movie Amadaeis where we're like, you know,
- 6:12Speaker 1: just writing it out and it's like written in five minutes,
- 6:15Speaker 1: Like it takes us years to figure out, like does that.
- 6:17Speaker 3: Note belong here? Is that the note polong there? So?
- 6:20Speaker 1: So yeah, So like it's it's a slow process, but
- 6:23Speaker 1: you have like this like we try not to think
- 6:26Speaker 1: of it technically.
- 6:27Speaker 3: We try to just feel.
- 6:29Speaker 1: What the song is and if it feels like it's
- 6:32Speaker 1: the journey's in the right spot or whatever.
- 6:34Speaker 3: I don't I don't know how to explain it.
- 6:36Speaker 2: Cool man, wasn't we in a climate light? They gave
- 6:39Speaker 2: birth debate and why did you actually get in at
- 6:41Speaker 2: the those times?
- 6:43Speaker 4: Well, we started like in two thousand.
- 6:45Speaker 1: I think Johnny started the band two thousand and one,
- 6:47Speaker 1: which is crazy.
- 6:51Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 6:51Speaker 1: We kind of believed in it right from the beginning
- 6:54Speaker 1: because I was in a band with Mike Cold neck
- 6:57Speaker 1: and we we shared a rehearsal space with Elliott and Johnny.
- 7:01Speaker 1: They were in a band called Spooge, and we were
- 7:03Speaker 1: all there's mutual fans of like what we did, and
- 7:06Speaker 1: when we all linked up together and we all liked
- 7:08Speaker 1: the same stuff, we just kind of and we started writing.
- 7:10Speaker 4: Like we just knew that this was a thing, and
- 7:13Speaker 4: we knew.
- 7:13Speaker 1: Like if it was a hardcore show, if it was
- 7:15Speaker 1: a death metal show, if it was, you know, a
- 7:18Speaker 1: progressive show or a regular metal show, whatever it was,
- 7:20Speaker 1: we would destroy. So we just had full faith in
- 7:23Speaker 1: what we're doing and just plow ahead.
- 7:25Speaker 5: Yeah, you've always been a band who cress music to
- 7:28Speaker 5: your own names rather than as pressure, mate, So has
- 7:31Speaker 5: that become horder to do the more well known that
- 7:34Speaker 5: you've got?
- 7:38Speaker 3: Man, he's a good questions man.
- 7:40Speaker 4: Yeah. Good, you did get it?
- 7:44Speaker 3: Oh Man, that's crazy.
- 7:46Speaker 1: I mean you definitely feel some sort of pressure to
- 7:48Speaker 1: put stuff out like we you know, as soon as
- 7:50Speaker 1: like I released something from my side project sun Guts
- 7:53Speaker 1: or something I'm doing with Ben or I'm going on
- 7:56Speaker 1: tour with GoJ Era, I always get a comments like
- 7:58Speaker 1: when's the next record coming out? When the next record
- 8:00Speaker 1: coming out? I'm like, we're working on it, man, like
- 8:02Speaker 1: it's gotta be good.
- 8:04Speaker 4: So there's definitely that pressure.
- 8:06Speaker 1: But we also know, like I think we learned on
- 8:08Speaker 1: the rat last record that once something is out, even
- 8:11Speaker 1: if it's like a little thing that you don't like, like,
- 8:14Speaker 1: that's the kind of thing that keeps you up at
- 8:16Speaker 1: night for us because we're so neurotic and uh you know,
- 8:19Speaker 1: detailed orientated.
- 8:21Speaker 4: That's just the point way of ConA.
- 8:23Speaker 2: So the word they call it.
- 8:26Speaker 1: I mean, I go there please. So yeah, so we
- 8:30Speaker 1: we we were not in any rush. Well, like we
- 8:33Speaker 1: want it to be exactly the way we want it
- 8:34Speaker 1: to be. Give it the time and the freedom to
- 8:37Speaker 1: be what it's going to be.
- 8:38Speaker 3: And I mean.
- 8:38Speaker 4: Carnival, what was it like twelve years since the last record.
- 8:41Speaker 1: Yes, now we're coming to you like it's we're embracing
- 8:48Speaker 1: the whole culture, you know.
- 8:50Speaker 2: So when's the next record coming out? You lost to
- 8:55Speaker 2: have the more something. I didn't kick that thousand money, mate,
- 8:58Speaker 2: So you have any new songs on the.
- 9:00Speaker 1: Tune, We're gonna be doing the tiles Whisper Dreams, two
- 9:03Speaker 1: songs from that EP, which are fairly new. Uh No,
- 9:07Speaker 1: the newer stuff we're still cooking it, so I can't say.
- 9:09Speaker 1: I mean, i'd like to say we'll release something by
- 9:11Speaker 1: the end of the.
- 9:12Speaker 3: Year, but I don't want to make any promises.
- 9:16Speaker 4: I'll say this, I will skip you there. I'll give
- 9:17Speaker 4: you one little bit.
- 9:18Speaker 1: So we do have a pretty red uh.
- 9:23Speaker 3: Fifth memberish type of thing for one song. That's gonna
- 9:25Speaker 3: be pretty cool. Us as a man is like extremely
- 9:28Speaker 3: excited about.
- 9:30Speaker 2: No, it's admit that can have to come along with
- 9:31Speaker 2: the shows to say it.
- 9:34Speaker 4: That would be sick if he could, but I know
- 9:36Speaker 4: he can't.
- 9:39Speaker 3: I experience on that jetly.
- 9:43Speaker 2: Did you remember the first time you ever heard one
- 9:45Speaker 2: of your songs played on the radio? And way way
- 9:47Speaker 2: and how do it make it?
- 9:49Speaker 4: Not where?
- 9:50Speaker 1: But I remember, Uh, this was back head Banger's Ball
- 9:53Speaker 1: was still a thing.
- 9:54Speaker 3: Do you know what that is?
- 9:55Speaker 2: Yeah, I remember that.
- 9:56Speaker 3: Yeah, head Banger's.
- 9:57Speaker 1: Ball was on MTV and our video was on head
- 10:00Speaker 1: Banger's Ball and we were like, holy shit.
- 10:03Speaker 4: It was only on at once, but it was on
- 10:04Speaker 4: it so that counts.
- 10:06Speaker 1: And yeah, I mean, like it's like a full circle
- 10:08Speaker 1: moment because I remember, like, you know, I had the
- 10:11Speaker 1: dial the TV with the dial, you know, you had
- 10:14Speaker 1: the little cable box on the top of my I
- 10:20Speaker 1: just want, you know, waiting for midnight to you maybe
- 10:23Speaker 1: hear the new metallicus On that's coming out, you know,
- 10:25Speaker 1: or like.
- 10:26Speaker 4: Whatever like that's to be part of.
- 10:29Speaker 3: That was like such a full circle thing and that
- 10:31Speaker 3: was ratisfied.
- 10:32Speaker 2: Yea, that's great. I'm sorry, grate Well, thanks very much
- 10:34Speaker 2: for you're tom Bray cop Up. I headed to Australia
- 10:36Speaker 2: with Chestaret and Carnival, kicking off in Perth on July
- 10:39Speaker 2: the eight eighth. I'm definitely gonna try and make the
- 10:41Speaker 2: Bridgemane show off in this chest so we'll see you that.
- 10:43Speaker 4: Please do yeah, please deal with tang for sure,
