- 0:00Speaker 1: It's thirty eight.
- 0:00Speaker 2: All Bills can win.
- 0:01Speaker 3: In here, Wake puts it down, the kick is on
- 0:04Speaker 3: the way and dock m.
- 0:06Speaker 1: The bell good one?
- 0:07Speaker 2: How the hell that one.
- 0:11Speaker 3: Home?
- 0:11Speaker 1: How one?
- 0:13Speaker 2: They were a party one not party way?
- 0:16Speaker 1: Incredible?
- 0:17Speaker 3: Why not combat by my bell?
- 0:19Speaker 4: Jacksonville's perfect record on the line right here.
- 0:27Speaker 3: Quick kicking, look excited. Touchdown Kyle Williams touchdound amazing, unbelievable.
- 0:53Speaker 3: They puttied william who's has to full back and he
- 0:56Speaker 3: scores a touchdown. It's wealthier to face tackle.
- 1:17Speaker 1: What's good folks, family, friends, loved ones, enemies, frenemies, wizards,
- 1:22Speaker 1: which is muggles, mud bloods, people of Middle Earth to
- 1:25Speaker 1: a special preseason post game disguise coverage Cover one Buffalo
- 1:32Speaker 1: Good Evening mash Up edition. Here we have myself, Greg Thompson,
- 1:39Speaker 1: Colin Ritchie, all three of us sat together in the
- 1:43Speaker 1: shade today at the new high Mark Stadium to watch
- 1:47Speaker 1: the Buffalo Bills in Carolina Panthers kick off the preseason.
- 1:51Speaker 1: And so we are here to discuss that reaction notes, thoughts,
- 1:56Speaker 1: answer any questions, comments, concerns, talk about the field. Because
- 2:01Speaker 1: that was a big talking point. I had so many
- 2:02Speaker 1: people coming back at me because I was like, oh,
- 2:04Speaker 1: the field had some divots and some people are like, yeah,
- 2:07Speaker 1: it's grass that happens. So that was fun to have
- 2:10Speaker 1: those social media interactions. But yeah, late night Saturday night action,
- 2:15Speaker 1: you know, cover one after dark type stuff, Greg, how
- 2:19Speaker 1: are you? Start with you? And then kick it over
- 2:21Speaker 1: to Colin.
- 2:22Speaker 4: Good lovely. It was an amazing day, amazing weekend. Spent
- 2:26Speaker 4: Friday night at the Erie County Fair with my daughter
- 2:29Speaker 4: and my nephews and brought them to the game today.
- 2:32Speaker 4: We went through, as you said, thank god, got to
- 2:35Speaker 4: enjoy the game in the shade. I underestimated how much
- 2:38Speaker 4: walking around I was going to be doing prior to
- 2:41Speaker 4: so I got a little more sun than I anticipated
- 2:44Speaker 4: prior to the game. But the game itself was lovely.
- 2:47Speaker 4: We were in the shade the entire time, in the
- 2:49Speaker 4: immaculate palace of our new Highmark Stadium. And we'll talk
- 2:53Speaker 4: a little bit about that as the game goes. Like
- 2:56Speaker 4: you said, some interesting things about the field, but an
- 3:01Speaker 4: amazing experience, amazing night there. So excited to talk about
- 3:05Speaker 4: it here with you guys. How would you come?
- 3:07Speaker 5: Yeah, this was my first time in the new stadium,
- 3:09Speaker 5: so being able to take it all in, see the
- 3:12Speaker 5: giant buffaloes in person, and all the small little easter
- 3:16Speaker 5: eggs that we were talking about in the stadium that
- 3:18Speaker 5: we saw. It was a really cool environment to be
- 3:20Speaker 5: a part of and a great test run for the
- 3:23Speaker 5: regular season coming up.
- 3:26Speaker 2: Yeah, can't wait, can't wait?
- 3:28Speaker 1: Can't wait?
- 3:29Speaker 2: Now?
- 3:29Speaker 1: What's a Bart Scott? Is it can't wait? Is that
- 3:32Speaker 1: can't wait? I'm thinking of it?
- 3:33Speaker 2: Can't wait?
- 3:34Speaker 1: Can't wait? Right, Bart Scott? Right, Yes, it's a good call, Scott,
- 3:37Speaker 1: Jet's legend, Raven's legend.
- 3:40Speaker 4: So what for things you can't wait for? What stuck
- 3:44Speaker 4: out to you the most? From a positive just overall
- 3:47Speaker 4: high level thoughts? What what stuck out to you the most?
- 3:48Speaker 1: Anthony, It's two especially just like kind of watching it
- 3:54Speaker 1: in person, not watching any tape, not watching it from
- 3:59Speaker 1: the comfort of Mike Houch and me out. I made
- 4:01Speaker 1: this joke to Colin earlier, like not being able to
- 4:02Speaker 1: like pause everything and rewind, fast forward in slow motion
- 4:06Speaker 1: and all that stuff. Offensively, it was and some of
- 4:11Speaker 1: the stuff we talked about earlier today when we were together,
- 4:13Speaker 1: you know, the under center play action and then that
- 4:17Speaker 1: specifically leading to like shots in the intermediate potentially some
- 4:20Speaker 1: stuff deep like kind of using that to generate chunk
- 4:22Speaker 1: plays I thought was notable, and then you know Carolina
- 4:27Speaker 1: was missing. There are two starting guards today, if I'm correct,
- 4:32Speaker 1: right Colin. I think we just loved that earlier. Yep,
- 4:35Speaker 1: And so Devil's Advocate kind of put that out there.
- 4:38Speaker 1: But the Bills run defense look good and that makes
- 4:40Speaker 1: me really excited because like that's kind of all you know,
- 4:44Speaker 1: we were making the joke earlier of like, you know,
- 4:46Speaker 1: I think you're only here for I feel like you're
- 4:48Speaker 1: only here for the zip line, Like I was only
- 4:49Speaker 1: here for the defense today. Like that's where I was
- 4:51Speaker 1: like I wanted. I was like, okay, DJ Moore, Cool.
- 4:54Speaker 1: The offense is the same. They're a good offense. We'll
- 4:56Speaker 1: see what happens at left guard. But they're gonna run
- 4:58Speaker 1: the ball well, they're going to pass well, they've got
- 5:00Speaker 1: there built for today's NFL. Cool. I was very much like,
- 5:03Speaker 1: get me to the defense. How much odd front stuff
- 5:06Speaker 1: are we going to get? Who's at linebacker? What's the rotation?
- 5:09Speaker 1: But all of that was like subplots to the bigger
- 5:12Speaker 1: story of are they going to get like pushed around
- 5:15Speaker 1: or what's the run defense look like? And granted Carolina
- 5:17Speaker 1: Ransom Zone, which I thought played better into the Bills's hands,
- 5:21Speaker 1: but I think it was literally the first play of
- 5:23Speaker 1: the game, Dion Walker gets that stop and we were
- 5:25Speaker 1: kind of off to the races with watching them kind
- 5:27Speaker 1: of gum things up regularly. And so those were my
- 5:29Speaker 1: two biggest ones.
- 5:30Speaker 2: How would you kill?
- 5:31Speaker 6: Yeah?
- 5:32Speaker 5: I mean in terms of the defense, And was just
- 5:33Speaker 5: touching on this. The first two plays we had five
- 5:35Speaker 5: man fronts and then third down we were running man
- 5:38Speaker 5: coverage and it's like, what defense is this? This is
- 5:40Speaker 5: where are we The exact opposite of the Sean McDermott experience,
- 5:44Speaker 5: and so that was great to see right from the
- 5:46Speaker 5: very beginning with all the starters on the field, and
- 5:49Speaker 5: then offensively, there were just guys running open and that's
- 5:52Speaker 5: not something we're used to seeing a lot of and
- 5:54Speaker 5: obviously DJ Moore plays a big factor in that, but
- 5:57Speaker 5: Kaloshakir had a positive average depth of target. That's not
- 6:00Speaker 5: something we're used to seeing it either. It was just
- 6:02Speaker 5: great to see these receivers get downfield and have open
- 6:05Speaker 5: space to run into and catch the ball and be
- 6:06Speaker 5: able to turn up field.
- 6:09Speaker 4: Yeah, I think a lot of fans see when they
- 6:12Speaker 4: hear passing down the field, they envision forwards and they envision,
- 6:19Speaker 4: you know, thirty five forty yard passes.
- 6:21Speaker 2: Don't get me wrong, those are fun.
- 6:24Speaker 4: There was a moment where we wanted one to happen,
- 6:26Speaker 4: and we debated whether the quarterback on the field literally
- 6:29Speaker 4: physically capable of making the pass that was needed. But
- 6:33Speaker 4: what I was excited about was the fact that in
- 6:35Speaker 4: the NFL, passing down the field and taking advantage of
- 6:39Speaker 4: space and taking those you know, being aggressive downfield in
- 6:44Speaker 4: reality and the current NFL is really fifteen to twenty
- 6:47Speaker 4: yards is can you get the ball down the field?
- 6:49Speaker 4: Not just checkdowns and not swings, and not just immediately
- 6:53Speaker 4: in the line of scrimmage, but can you threaten that
- 6:57Speaker 4: when they're dropping back and giving space that layer between
- 7:00Speaker 4: queen the front where the coverage is created, are you
- 7:03Speaker 4: able to get the ball into that space. I love
- 7:04Speaker 4: the fact that we saw that consistently, like layering those
- 7:07Speaker 4: throws in the post gampressor Klosha here that couldn't talk
- 7:12Speaker 4: enough about the ball that Josh put over the defense
- 7:16Speaker 4: into that spot to DJ Moore along the sideline on
- 7:18Speaker 4: that outbreaking route and just being in a position where
- 7:22Speaker 4: like we're taking those shots down the field and account
- 7:25Speaker 4: you know, joked about it that you know close here
- 7:27Speaker 4: is capable of being an intermediate receiver and that you
- 7:30Speaker 4: know he is able to do those things. And obviously,
- 7:33Speaker 4: like the biggest highlight play was a broken coverage by Carolina,
- 7:38Speaker 4: but seeing you know, DJ Moore running and literally like
- 7:41Speaker 4: like Leonard Fournette asking for the contact to come there.
- 7:46Speaker 4: But it was fun to see that movement down the
- 7:49Speaker 4: field and I think that is intentional of what's there.
- 7:52Speaker 2: And then the other part.
- 7:53Speaker 4: On defense, like you said, was wanting to see I
- 7:56Speaker 4: know it's gonna be different. I know there's gonna be
- 7:58Speaker 4: pieces that are gonna, you know, end up being used
- 8:01Speaker 4: differently than what we're used to. But the immediacy of
- 8:05Speaker 4: matching personnel, it was odd front the first two plays.
- 8:09Speaker 4: Immediately then you have Landy Jackson come off, you have
- 8:12Speaker 4: d Alford come in, and it converts to nickel, but they.
- 8:14Speaker 2: Run it with man.
- 8:16Speaker 4: But then also we I didn't realize it was person
- 8:20Speaker 4: as personnel driven as it was until the second drive
- 8:23Speaker 4: with the same starters and d Elford's in on the
- 8:25Speaker 4: first snap, and that it's immediately opening up matching the
- 8:28Speaker 4: eleven personnel of what's there. So I love that look
- 8:31Speaker 4: that it wasn't like, hey, no, we're going to go
- 8:33Speaker 4: base based nickel like, which again I don't want to.
- 8:36Speaker 4: I'm a huge John McDermot apologist. I love Sean McDermott.
- 8:40Speaker 4: I still have a soft spot in my heart for him,
- 8:42Speaker 4: but base based nickel is the kind of thing I
- 8:46Speaker 4: would have expected John de Derbott to kind of schedule
- 8:49Speaker 4: as things went, and I loved the fact that we
- 8:51Speaker 4: lined up and matched already to what it was going
- 8:53Speaker 4: to be like. And at first I was like, oh,
- 8:57Speaker 4: it was kind of interesting that I thought the starting
- 8:59Speaker 4: defense state the game longer.
- 9:01Speaker 2: To be able to do that, but it was.
- 9:04Speaker 4: It was just that it took them three or four
- 9:07Speaker 4: drives to get their ten snaps that should that Josh Ellen.
- 9:11Speaker 2: Got in two drives.
- 9:12Speaker 4: It took them through or four drives to get that
- 9:15Speaker 4: because all of them are three and outs, so they
- 9:17Speaker 4: it took them more drives to get their allotment of
- 9:20Speaker 4: ten snaps first starter or whatever. Roughly it seems like
- 9:23Speaker 4: what it was, but when you go three and out,
- 9:25Speaker 4: three and out, three and out, it takes you a
- 9:26Speaker 4: little while to get there.
- 9:28Speaker 2: Yeah, it takes you.
- 9:29Speaker 1: It takes a quick second. I like the point. You know,
- 9:33Speaker 1: we already spoke about a little here, and we were
- 9:34Speaker 1: talking about a bunch during the day, like the the
- 9:36Speaker 1: Khalisha Kiir aspect and oh man like nat and I
- 9:40Speaker 1: doesn't have a negative average at the target in hah
- 9:42Speaker 1: and all this like the the Bills last year, despite
- 9:47Speaker 1: you know, not pushing the ball downfield a ton. So
- 9:50Speaker 1: out of forty three qualifying quarterbacks last year, josh Allen
- 9:54Speaker 1: was twenty eighth an average depth of target at seven
- 9:58Speaker 1: point eight percent, and each of the past four years,
- 10:03Speaker 1: as his average depth of target has gone down, the
- 10:06Speaker 1: percentage of yardage of passing yardage for him duty yards
- 10:09Speaker 1: after catch has gone up. But despite that, you know,
- 10:13Speaker 1: especially last year, the Bills were still seventh in explosive
- 10:18Speaker 1: passing plays plays of fifteen or more yards, So they
- 10:21Speaker 1: weren't pushing the ball downfield, but they were doing these
- 10:24Speaker 1: little you know, quote unquote like dink and dunks and
- 10:27Speaker 1: then Khalils Shakir mainly, but other guys break a tackle
- 10:30Speaker 1: kind of generate yardage, so they were getting you know,
- 10:33Speaker 1: explosive passes, but they weren't doing it with air yards,
- 10:36Speaker 1: and so I'm really excited to see this potential because
- 10:40Speaker 1: we saw it in camp, we saw it in Blue
- 10:42Speaker 1: and Red scrimmage. I like seeing it already in week
- 10:45Speaker 1: one of the preseason that you know, if they are
- 10:48Speaker 1: able to kind of push the ball down field from
- 10:50Speaker 1: an air yards perspective, because again they were able to
- 10:53Speaker 1: generate explosives just more due to like, hey, let's just
- 10:56Speaker 1: get this guy the ball real quick and let it
- 10:58Speaker 1: let them do something whoever it is. Now, if they
- 11:00Speaker 1: can add that extra element, and then if we can
- 11:03Speaker 1: push it even further, if we can get some stuff
- 11:05Speaker 1: twenty yards or more downfield, whether it's djmore or whoever,
- 11:08Speaker 1: it really starts to become like what do you do
- 11:12Speaker 1: with this offense? Like the run game that they have,
- 11:15Speaker 1: the short yards after catch, break tackle stuff, intermediate stuff,
- 11:19Speaker 1: deep ball stuff. You've got athleticism, you've got some route running,
- 11:23Speaker 1: you've got some straight up mash you and run through
- 11:25Speaker 1: your face and all of this isn't like, guys, it's
- 11:28Speaker 1: one preseason game, like you know, pump the rigs. This
- 11:30Speaker 1: is something we've seen all since training camp started, like
- 11:34Speaker 1: day one on camp, they were pushing the ball downfield
- 11:37Speaker 1: a good chunk and I liked seeing it continue here
- 11:41Speaker 1: in week one of the preseason. They're not tipping their
- 11:43Speaker 1: hand too much, but it seems like they've made a
- 11:45Speaker 1: concerted effort to rectify that, and that was kind of
- 11:48Speaker 1: really the only thing that was missing, like more air
- 11:50Speaker 1: yards and more deep shots and completions there, and the
- 11:54Speaker 1: fact that they've kind of seemingly worked to address that
- 11:57Speaker 1: in some capacity is as our just really exciting to
- 12:01Speaker 1: see from week one in the preseason.
- 12:04Speaker 5: And obviously the addition of DJ Moore helps with that,
- 12:06Speaker 5: but so does the health of josh Palmer, and that,
- 12:09Speaker 5: you know, slots everyone in better and so Colosial here
- 12:11Speaker 5: isn't your most reliable downfield threat, and maybe Skyler Bell
- 12:14Speaker 5: turns into something. I know there's someone in the comments
- 12:16Speaker 5: asking about him. He didn't play today, he had an injury,
- 12:18Speaker 5: but he's in a more reasonable spot in the pecking
- 12:21Speaker 5: order because of the of DJ Moore arriving and Joshua
- 12:25Speaker 5: Palmer being healthy, and that just also fine tunes everything
- 12:28Speaker 5: and makes it easier for Joe Brady and Josh.
- 12:29Speaker 4: Allen Fortune and Joe Brady said that if it was
- 12:32Speaker 4: a regular season game he would have played. They were
- 12:35Speaker 4: just being cautious with what's there. So how nice was
- 12:37Speaker 4: it that we didn't really notice that Dawson Knox or
- 12:41Speaker 4: Dalton Kinkaid didn't get a ball. It wasn't like lacking.
- 12:44Speaker 4: It wasn't a big concern. And again, they were only
- 12:47Speaker 4: playing the first couple drives anyways, But it wasn't like
- 12:50Speaker 4: a huge red flag that that would have been like
- 12:52Speaker 4: a major issue previously because they were able to get
- 12:55Speaker 4: right there that we didn't even hit the tight ends
- 12:58Speaker 4: and we're on pace to put up a pajillion points.
- 13:01Speaker 2: Before we get into some.
- 13:02Speaker 4: Of the individual Obviously, tonight, I think we're not going
- 13:05Speaker 4: to go drive by drive and go through all the
- 13:08Speaker 4: intricacies of everything that's there. Will all of us will
- 13:11Speaker 4: be able to go sit down and watch the actual
- 13:12Speaker 4: game in the film itself once we get a chance
- 13:14Speaker 4: to go through them, or try to do some of that.
- 13:16Speaker 4: Tomorrow night, we'll go through some of the individuals. This
- 13:19Speaker 4: stood out because I think that's the biggest takeaway for
- 13:22Speaker 4: games like this, maybe a couple of the high level
- 13:24Speaker 4: things that were maybe not as good or a challenge
- 13:28Speaker 4: one is I was certainly in preseason form every other play,
- 13:32Speaker 4: I didn't know who someone was, Like the amount of
- 13:36Speaker 4: jersey number changes plus new players last minute added to
- 13:41Speaker 4: the roster, recent signings, guys who we've never seen in
- 13:45Speaker 4: a Bill's uniform before that, Like, oh, I knew that
- 13:49Speaker 4: guy was on the team, but I didn't even know
- 13:51Speaker 4: he wore you know, number thirty two, where I didn't
- 13:54Speaker 4: even know he wore. I didn't know can I Walker
- 13:56Speaker 4: was number forty one, Like just going through moments like
- 13:58Speaker 4: that because I didn't have a chance to get out
- 13:59Speaker 4: to camp, so I knew the reports of how guys
- 14:02Speaker 4: were doing. And you obviously you know anthe Anthea, you
- 14:05Speaker 4: did a great job at camp going through there, so
- 14:06Speaker 4: I knew the names and the people. But I was like, oh,
- 14:09Speaker 4: that's literally the first time I saw him where number
- 14:11Speaker 4: forty one, And took me a second like, oh, that's
- 14:13Speaker 4: who Knightwalker is. Like when number seven was back there
- 14:17Speaker 4: you joked earlier, but why is Terren Johnson back for
- 14:20Speaker 4: the thing? Or like oh, Taylor rep looks really thick
- 14:23Speaker 4: up there on the edge. Just multiple guys like oh yeah,
- 14:26Speaker 4: those guys aren't on the team anymore.
- 14:29Speaker 2: It just every other play.
- 14:31Speaker 4: It was taking me a second to recalibrate, where like
- 14:33Speaker 4: that's just such a default of like knowing exactly who
- 14:37Speaker 4: guys are and like you don't need to think or
- 14:39Speaker 4: hesitate on who's in what spot and I don't have
- 14:42Speaker 4: those reps yeah and be like wait, wait, okay, now
- 14:47Speaker 4: I know who that is, and just adding that extra
- 14:49Speaker 4: time was hurt in my brain.
- 14:52Speaker 1: Colin and I were talking about because what I had
- 14:55Speaker 1: happened to me in camp happened to him when he was,
- 14:57Speaker 1: you know, been at practices seeing you see number fifty
- 15:01Speaker 1: like dropping in coverage and you're like, man like, look
- 15:03Speaker 1: at what they're doing with Rousseau and it's like, no,
- 15:04Speaker 1: that's not him anymore. He's fifteen. And it's just yeah,
- 15:07Speaker 1: there's so many like usually every year, and it's funny too,
- 15:11Speaker 1: especially with the Bean McDermott era, and especially on the
- 15:14Speaker 1: defensive side, like you kind of knew what you were
- 15:17Speaker 1: getting year after year, and so the numbers kind of
- 15:20Speaker 1: stayed the same. And now it's you know, new players,
- 15:23Speaker 1: plus the jersey changes, and then I think plus like
- 15:27Speaker 1: anybody can wear any number now, Like it's it's godlessness.
- 15:30Speaker 4: It's one of my own man old man shakes fistic
- 15:33Speaker 4: cloud takes like I used to love the fact that
- 15:36Speaker 4: I knew automatically, instinctually, even in the game of a
- 15:39Speaker 4: team I'm not following, I know what who a guy
- 15:43Speaker 4: is by the range of numbers they could wear, Like, oh,
- 15:46Speaker 4: I know, Oh, that's interesting that there's a corner in
- 15:50Speaker 4: that spect. Oh no, they just let defensive ends wear
- 15:52Speaker 4: number nine now or whatever.
- 15:54Speaker 1: Just I used to always thinking college football was so cool.
- 15:58Speaker 1: I'd be like, oh, look at this linebacker, where's twenty two?
- 16:00Speaker 1: Were like this defensive tackle, where's five? I was like, man,
- 16:02Speaker 1: they should do that in the NFL. Now, what's happening?
- 16:04Speaker 1: I was like, good lord, what have I done?
- 16:06Speaker 5: Like, well, Greg, if it makes you feel any better,
- 16:08Speaker 5: I'm a younger man and I have the same complaint,
- 16:10Speaker 5: Like I feel like I'm a purist in that regard.
- 16:12Speaker 5: Ad dresser shouldn't be wearing nine and fifteen, running back
- 16:15Speaker 5: sholm be wearing seven. Off ball linebackers shouldn't be wearing fifty.
- 16:18Speaker 5: It's just have some class people.
- 16:21Speaker 4: There are states where Jadavian Clowney were in twenty four
- 16:23Speaker 4: would have been a crime, Like that's just like, that's inappropriate.
- 16:27Speaker 1: It's inappropriate, it's appropriate.
- 16:30Speaker 2: We live in a society like that is that is.
- 16:33Speaker 1: Not we have rules here, like.
- 16:35Speaker 2: I oh, it's like it's just like skin crawling. It's
- 16:39Speaker 2: a skin crawling. It's terrible. It's so bad, all right.
- 16:43Speaker 4: So now, like to the actual focus of what's here,
- 16:47Speaker 4: let's start on the offensive side of the ball. Who
- 16:49Speaker 4: were in again, Obviously DJ Moore was awesome, Josh Allen's
- 16:53Speaker 4: really good, Like, those are fun things. Some of the
- 16:56Speaker 4: guys that may be more like fighting for a roster
- 16:59Speaker 4: spot or fighting for a positional battle. Who is someone
- 17:04Speaker 4: that stuck out? Let's start on the positive side. We
- 17:06Speaker 4: can talk about anyone else that's stuck out negatively that
- 17:09Speaker 4: flashed for you, that you thought was interesting, that was
- 17:13Speaker 4: out there and caught your eye. Positively, on the offensive side,
- 17:16Speaker 4: we'll start with you in.
- 17:19Speaker 1: I'm I'm gonna kind of group him as a as
- 17:24Speaker 1: a group the running backs. Again. You know, cook does
- 17:29Speaker 1: cook things, and we saw Ray Davis do some stuff.
- 17:30Speaker 1: But I thought Wheeler looked good. Frank Gore continues to
- 17:34Speaker 1: Frank Gore Junior is not sexy by any means, but
- 17:39Speaker 1: he just like consistently like I actually should attracked it, Like,
- 17:42Speaker 1: I feel like he has to have a very high
- 17:44Speaker 1: success rate of things. He just always seems like if
- 17:46Speaker 1: he if they get three yards, he gets four. Yeah,
- 17:49Speaker 1: he's just making positive plays consistently. H Wheeler had some
- 17:54Speaker 1: good runs today too, And I think a lot of
- 17:55Speaker 1: that speaks to more of the run game overall, the
- 18:00Speaker 1: offensive line, And like the bigger point for me here
- 18:04Speaker 1: is like using the running backs and the run game
- 18:08Speaker 1: to make me feel better that now that Aaron Kromer's gone,
- 18:11Speaker 1: the run game isn't going to fall apart. Like I
- 18:13Speaker 1: still think there will be some semblance of you know,
- 18:16Speaker 1: you had one of the best offensive line coaches and
- 18:18Speaker 1: assistant coaches in all of football who also called your
- 18:20Speaker 1: run game. It's understandable that, you know there, you know,
- 18:24Speaker 1: maybe you drop from like fourth best to sixth or
- 18:26Speaker 1: seventh best or something. But it was nice to see
- 18:29Speaker 1: them still be Nope, we're just gonna run duo and
- 18:32Speaker 1: it's going to be wide open, and we're going to
- 18:34Speaker 1: drive our running backs right through your face on it.
- 18:37Speaker 1: Left right, left right. That was also something I noticed too,
- 18:39Speaker 1: more duo to the left today. I feel like they
- 18:42Speaker 1: I mean, if I had Spencer Brown and Osiris Torrents
- 18:45Speaker 1: on the right side of my line. I would probably
- 18:47Speaker 1: run behind them a ton too, But yeah, that I
- 18:49Speaker 1: thought the running backs looked good, like as an entire group,
- 18:52Speaker 1: like collectively today, and I think that speaks to them,
- 18:55Speaker 1: but also to the offensive line and the design. It
- 18:57Speaker 1: was nice to see that kind of from first string
- 19:00Speaker 1: to last string. The backs were rolling, they had space,
- 19:04Speaker 1: they had yards before contact, and I thought they were
- 19:06Speaker 1: seeing the field well.
- 19:08Speaker 4: So mine was because the bar was really low from
- 19:12Speaker 4: you and from literally everyone else who was at camp.
- 19:16Speaker 4: I was expecting a absolute disaster from the backup quarterbacks,
- 19:20Speaker 4: and they were functional, like, they were efficient, They ran
- 19:24Speaker 4: the offense properly. You know, we joked again about my
- 19:29Speaker 4: my rant of everyone else is somewhere on the spectrum
- 19:32Speaker 4: of not Josh Allen, and I don't particularly care where
- 19:34Speaker 4: you fall on that spectrum. In the future, someday I
- 19:38Speaker 4: will get a Day three pick with contract control and
- 19:41Speaker 4: all the all the fun things go with that. But
- 19:44Speaker 4: you know, again, it's the Panthers, It's not you know,
- 19:47Speaker 4: it's the dumb down. You know, Nathan Peterman looked good
- 19:49Speaker 4: in the preseason. People forget that he looked fantastic that preseason,
- 19:54Speaker 4: So this is not something to write home about. But
- 19:56Speaker 4: I was ready for an absolute denomination. I was ready
- 19:59Speaker 4: for dirted balls and terrible decision making and scrambling and
- 20:04Speaker 4: panic and that just the level of I don't want
- 20:07Speaker 4: to say like panic, but like the level of concern
- 20:10Speaker 4: or the drum beat out of camp of how poor
- 20:13Speaker 4: the backup quarterbacks were playing. I was prepared for, like, oh,
- 20:16Speaker 4: I hope this is so functional. And again that you know,
- 20:20Speaker 4: preseason production is not everything. But Cawai at fourteen out
- 20:23Speaker 4: of sixteen four hundred and eight yards, Bushelle at six
- 20:26Speaker 4: out of nine for fifty yards, no turnovers from either
- 20:28Speaker 4: of them, only two sacks for Kyi on and both of
- 20:31Speaker 4: them were not his fault, Like those were the plays
- 20:34Speaker 4: where there was nowhere else to go into one Memora.
- 20:36Speaker 4: I think he even like stepped up in and reduced
- 20:38Speaker 4: the amount of lost yardage, which is sometimes you know,
- 20:41Speaker 4: the lesser of evils for some.
- 20:42Speaker 2: Of those things.
- 20:42Speaker 4: So again, not anything exciting, I hope doesn't even matter,
- 20:46Speaker 4: but I just met the bar for me was so
- 20:49Speaker 4: low that like, oh, these guys are functioning, and again,
- 20:52Speaker 4: what's going to matter when we actually go to watch
- 20:54Speaker 4: the game in full is you can then actually evaluate
- 20:57Speaker 4: the other players, because the worst thing to have is
- 21:00Speaker 4: when you don't have a functional quarterback in a preseason
- 21:02Speaker 4: game and you really want to watch a receiver, you
- 21:04Speaker 4: really want to watch a tight end, or you really
- 21:05Speaker 4: want to watch pieces of an offense, you can't figure
- 21:08Speaker 4: anything out because the quarterback can't function to actually run
- 21:12Speaker 4: the offense. It could be really frustrating to try to
- 21:15Speaker 4: get a read on anything what's going on. So I
- 21:17Speaker 4: at least like that they kept the wheels in motion
- 21:20Speaker 4: and kept the train on the track to.
- 21:21Speaker 2: Like, hey, Kyle Allen, let us watch anything else.
- 21:23Speaker 1: Allen was the one who had a couple throws. Kyle
- 21:25Speaker 1: Allen was the one who had a couple of throws
- 21:27Speaker 1: day where all three of us were like, oh, like,
- 21:29Speaker 1: when the bills were coming towards us, he made a
- 21:31Speaker 1: couple of layer throws where we were like wow, like
- 21:33Speaker 1: oh like and then it stopped kind of becoming like
- 21:36Speaker 1: a high voice wrecking. Now it was instead of going
- 21:38Speaker 1: like oh, it was just like oh, like no, he
- 21:41Speaker 1: just keep Yeah. He had several throws today that it
- 21:43Speaker 1: was just like, man, this is kind of fun. And
- 21:45Speaker 1: then we quickly went from that to be like, wouldn't
- 21:48Speaker 1: it be cool if the Bills had like a Tyson
- 21:49Speaker 1: Pagent or some fun backup quarterback for like four years.
- 21:52Speaker 2: Yeah, someday, someday.
- 21:55Speaker 4: All right, you can double dip here coll and anybody
- 21:57Speaker 4: else that we didn't touch on yet. This stut out
- 21:59Speaker 4: to you positively and then maybe the first one that
- 22:01Speaker 4: was maybe a little bit of the concern or anything
- 22:02Speaker 4: negative on the opposite side.
- 22:04Speaker 5: Yeah, So I was gonna go with the backup quarterback,
- 22:06Speaker 5: but I'll go a different route because you address that.
- 22:09Speaker 5: But I completely agree with what you're saying, especially Kyle Allen.
- 22:11Speaker 5: I found myself pleasantly surprised with him. There are a
- 22:14Speaker 5: couple of receivers that I don't know what the odds
- 22:16Speaker 5: are of them actually making the fifty three man roster,
- 22:18Speaker 5: but in terms of fighting for a spot on the
- 22:20Speaker 5: practice squad, and then who knows if we need to
- 22:22Speaker 5: call one of them up for game day in the future.
- 22:23Speaker 5: But Steven Gosnell had a couple of nice plays, three
- 22:26Speaker 5: catches for forty four yards. Jacry Macklin had that nice
- 22:28Speaker 5: one handed catch. He missed the two plank conversion. I
- 22:31Speaker 5: was informed that it was more the pass than him.
- 22:34Speaker 5: It could have been caught, but from the TV angle,
- 22:37Speaker 5: it was more the pass was off. But yeah, you
- 22:39Speaker 5: had that one handed catch. So just guys like that
- 22:41Speaker 5: still we don't perceive them as having a chance to
- 22:44Speaker 5: make the fifty three. But they're still fighting for jobs
- 22:46Speaker 5: in the NFL and a spot in the Bills organization,
- 22:49Speaker 5: even I it's with the practice squad instead of the
- 22:51Speaker 5: fifty three man roster.
- 22:53Speaker 4: The guys, the guy, the gouys, anything, how about maybe
- 23:00Speaker 4: a concern or a guy who you think you know
- 23:03Speaker 4: not that got himselves cut but it might have not
- 23:05Speaker 4: helped his chances today.
- 23:07Speaker 5: Yeah, well, all these guys are making the team because
- 23:09Speaker 5: they were out with the first team. But Josh Allen
- 23:10Speaker 5: took a couple of hits. There's some comments in the
- 23:14Speaker 5: chat about that. We saw Spencer Brown get beat really
- 23:16Speaker 5: cleanly on a cut inside by Jalen Phillips that resulted
- 23:20Speaker 5: in Josh needed to strong arm him away and throw
- 23:22Speaker 5: it out of bounds. Not something you want to see
- 23:24Speaker 5: from your all world quarterback in the preseason getting under
- 23:27Speaker 5: dress that frequently. But we also have to remember that
- 23:30Speaker 5: no Connor McGovern and you're still trying to figure out
- 23:32Speaker 5: who you're starting left guard is, so there are posentially
- 23:34Speaker 5: two backups on that offensive line as they're still trying
- 23:37Speaker 5: to sort things out. But not my favorite thing to
- 23:39Speaker 5: see in the preseason.
- 23:41Speaker 4: Yeah, I was gonna mention, you know, again, it's only
- 23:43Speaker 4: a snap or two, but there was more than one
- 23:47Speaker 4: negative flash for Spencer Brown. I was like, hey, come on, Like,
- 23:50Speaker 4: I know it's just preseason and we're not game planning
- 23:53Speaker 4: here and there's no like extra chips or help or
- 23:55Speaker 4: anything like that, but like, hey, I don't I'm not
- 23:57Speaker 4: looking to see that. Obviously in the moment, the maybe
- 24:04Speaker 4: concern for Alec Anderson, but he came right back in
- 24:06Speaker 4: so that didn't seem to be an issue. But you know,
- 24:10Speaker 4: I was concerned with Connor McGovern being out and that
- 24:13Speaker 4: ended up being not too big of a concern. Again,
- 24:16Speaker 4: it's so hard to see anything for line play live
- 24:19Speaker 4: while you're watching, so there was nothing obvious with either
- 24:22Speaker 4: Vamparank Granger, but it seemed like Chrishion Barry was good.
- 24:25Speaker 4: Got both drives where you swapped with the other two
- 24:29Speaker 4: for Anderson in Corbett at left guard, so Kushian Berry
- 24:32Speaker 4: getting both drives seems pretty definitively so far that he's
- 24:36Speaker 4: a notch ahead of Vamparan Granger, which such a weird
- 24:41Speaker 4: Like I was getting messages of like, should we you know,
- 24:45Speaker 4: let McGovern walk since we have Vamparan Grainger and like, oh,
- 24:49Speaker 4: do you think we could flip him for a day
- 24:51Speaker 4: two pick? And I just kept like, what do people
- 24:53Speaker 4: think that he is? Like I just didn't understand like
- 24:56Speaker 4: the the founding of like where it was coming from.
- 25:00Speaker 1: We got some really good college highlights and that's what
- 25:02Speaker 1: most people look at, and so like you see a
- 25:04Speaker 1: center out in space mauling somebody and you're like, oh,
- 25:07Speaker 1: I should like play.
- 25:09Speaker 4: It was just like it was it was a known
- 25:11Speaker 4: like a certainty that we had this hidden gem that
- 25:14Speaker 4: wasn't allowed to show what he was going to do
- 25:17Speaker 4: because we were we had to play kind of McGovern.
- 25:19Speaker 4: It just just just good to pump the brakes a
- 25:22Speaker 4: little bit there. And then, you know, I don't think
- 25:26Speaker 4: there was anything, you know, concerning from a receiver standpoint,
- 25:32Speaker 4: But I don't know that I saw anyone like show
- 25:36Speaker 4: anything there for whether it was Hardman or Pettis or
- 25:40Speaker 4: anyone there. You know, I was kind of hoping someone
- 25:43Speaker 4: in that bottom group might lash a little bit like
- 25:46Speaker 4: Josh Palmer.
- 25:47Speaker 2: I saw him on the field.
- 25:48Speaker 4: I know he was playing, but I don't didn't see
- 25:50Speaker 4: anything there.
- 25:52Speaker 2: So if anything, by.
- 25:53Speaker 4: Default, like Kean Coleman actually like look pretty decent as
- 25:58Speaker 4: the third receiver. There was certainly the guy that was
- 26:01Speaker 4: in in three receiver sets, so I was kind of
- 26:03Speaker 4: hoping one of those guys would do something to be like, oh,
- 26:06Speaker 4: that's going to be an element in fairness.
- 26:08Speaker 2: Hartman didn't have that.
- 26:09Speaker 4: Nice jet sweep later on that that you know, obviously
- 26:13Speaker 4: something he can do in that that gadgety type role.
- 26:16Speaker 4: But yeah, the offense looked good, so like there's not
- 26:19Speaker 4: gonna be a ton of downside for things. But anybody
- 26:22Speaker 4: that we didn't touch on yet that stuck out to
- 26:25Speaker 4: you in.
- 26:26Speaker 1: No, it was really just the and I want to
- 26:28Speaker 1: see that the tape, but it was the offensive line,
- 26:31Speaker 1: you know. I Colin mentioned the one I think the
- 26:34Speaker 1: one that ended the first drive when Phillips beat Brown
- 26:38Speaker 1: inside but across the board and some numbers always get tweaked,
- 26:41Speaker 1: as you know, reports finally come through. But the Panthers
- 26:45Speaker 1: as a team had a fifty pass rushing had a
- 26:49Speaker 1: fifty four point eight win percentage today, which is super high.
- 26:53Speaker 1: The Bills, for reference, who generated some pressure and did
- 26:56Speaker 1: good today on their own, they had a forty win
- 26:59Speaker 1: rate today. The Panthers had a forty two point nine
- 27:03Speaker 1: percent pressure rate. The Bills had a twenty eight point
- 27:06Speaker 1: nine percent pressure rate. And then the Panthers had a
- 27:08Speaker 1: thirty two point one pass us productivity score. The Bills
- 27:10Speaker 1: had a twenty two point two. So kind of, however
- 27:13Speaker 1: you slice it, starters through the third team, Carolina team,
- 27:16Speaker 1: I mean, the numbers bear it out, but I think
- 27:18Speaker 1: even just watching it from the stands, it felt like
- 27:21Speaker 1: Josh Allen was under some pressure. Shell was under some pressure,
- 27:24Speaker 1: Kyle Allen was under some pressure, and so I I
- 27:27Speaker 1: that would be the one downside, like the big one
- 27:29Speaker 1: that stuck on. I kind of okay? Was it? Was
- 27:32Speaker 1: it more protection based? Was it certain players who were
- 27:34Speaker 1: getting consistently beat? Is there something to tug on here?
- 27:37Speaker 1: Is it you know, nothing in its preseason or whatever?
- 27:42Speaker 1: But that that, to me was was was the biggest one.
- 27:44Speaker 1: And when I looked at the numbers back, I wonder
- 27:46Speaker 1: if you know these numbers are out yet or what
- 27:47Speaker 1: it looks like and I saw him and I was like, yesh,
- 27:49Speaker 1: so it is like what I kind of thought it was.
- 27:51Speaker 1: And so yeah, that that that's the big one for
- 27:53Speaker 1: me right now.
- 27:54Speaker 4: And obviously the results show that, you know, the Bills
- 27:57Speaker 4: quarterbacks dealt with the pressure better than the pan Thirst quarterback.
- 28:00Speaker 4: So like some fans will be like, oh, what do
- 28:02Speaker 4: you mean the offense look great, be like, well, that
- 28:04Speaker 4: can be one. Josh is the ultimate example of making
- 28:08Speaker 4: that right. Like the touchdown to keyn Coleman is a
- 28:10Speaker 4: perfect example where like that's just a Josh Allen play,
- 28:13Speaker 4: Like you're not You're not supposed to roll out to
- 28:15Speaker 4: the right and turn to throw back across your body
- 28:17Speaker 4: and that for you know, probably twenty seven other quarterbacks
- 28:22Speaker 4: in the NFL, that's interception, Like that ball doesn't get
- 28:25Speaker 4: there and that's intercepted. But you know, Josh's Josh, so
- 28:28Speaker 4: that those things work. But like as far as the
- 28:30Speaker 4: offensive line goes multiple those plays, whether he escaped, whether
- 28:33Speaker 4: he made something out of it or did take actual
- 28:36Speaker 4: you know, in actual sack in that but nextually took
- 28:39Speaker 4: a second one that got wiped away because of the
- 28:41Speaker 4: face mask. But he actually took two sacks on that
- 28:43Speaker 4: right got hit, you know. So there's a couple other
- 28:46Speaker 4: spots where they got bailed out on a couple of things.
- 28:49Speaker 4: So yeah, we'll watch it. And I don't think it
- 28:52Speaker 4: was like a disaster, but it's not shocking that those
- 28:55Speaker 4: numbers netted that out. And I do think a small
- 28:57Speaker 4: piece of that is the no game plan. They're not
- 28:59Speaker 4: doing a lot of extra chips and help for different
- 29:01Speaker 4: things there, so that plenty of that's not a major concern,
- 29:04Speaker 4: but I prefer not to see it. All right, you
- 29:07Speaker 4: guys take a break. We're gonna flip over to defense.
- 29:09Speaker 4: I'm gonna talk about Dan Walker maybe thirty forty minutes.
- 29:11Speaker 4: Will you guys come back in a minute.
- 29:14Speaker 2: So you decide.
- 29:17Speaker 4: Uh, just the timing of wearing my large human jersey
- 29:22Speaker 4: for the first time, and he destroyed like three of
- 29:25Speaker 4: the first five plays of the game, like all all
- 29:31Speaker 4: you know, context included. I'm pretty sure it was against
- 29:34Speaker 4: the backup Panthers guard on a couple of the plays.
- 29:38Speaker 2: I don't even know who starts at center for the Panthers.
- 29:40Speaker 1: Uh.
- 29:41Speaker 2: Cole Mays was also out.
- 29:43Speaker 6: Luke Fortner, I had to look that.
- 29:46Speaker 4: God bless lu Portner that it's still fun that he
- 29:51Speaker 4: looked ridiculous and was one of the guys that was
- 29:55Speaker 4: brought up as a player that potentially may benefit from
- 29:58Speaker 4: the scheme change and the usage and how they're going
- 30:01Speaker 4: to be able to put those things together.
- 30:02Speaker 2: There's also some talk about maybe a little body.
- 30:05Speaker 4: Sculpting coming into this year, because I'd beusly a guy
- 30:08Speaker 4: who has been you know, pretty clearly playing on the
- 30:11Speaker 4: gifts of God given gifts of how he's been done.
- 30:15Speaker 4: It wasn't like a physical specimen at six seven three
- 30:19Speaker 4: forty one so and he's still a big guy, but
- 30:23Speaker 4: like you could tell, like a little body composition, development
- 30:26Speaker 4: of things, and definitely in his postgame presser talking to
- 30:30Speaker 4: him in the locker room, just a real sense of maturity,
- 30:34Speaker 4: a very strong sense of confidence in like not a
- 30:37Speaker 4: lot of surprise, and like he's like, yeah, they expect
- 30:40Speaker 4: me to be able to take advantage of opportunities and
- 30:44Speaker 4: to be able to drive, you know, to dominate in
- 30:49Speaker 4: the in the spots where I get the opportunity, and
- 30:52Speaker 4: just very matter of fact, like very like yeah, that's
- 30:54Speaker 4: what that's what they expect me to be able to do.
- 30:56Speaker 4: And I have to be able to take advantage of
- 30:59Speaker 4: those spots and seeing him, you know, you always get
- 31:02Speaker 4: nervous when you have guys where they're just so big
- 31:06Speaker 4: and so nimble at his size, so a lot of
- 31:12Speaker 4: times that means footballs come easy to him his whole life,
- 31:15Speaker 4: Like he hasn't had to work real hard to be dominant,
- 31:18Speaker 4: because when you're that big and can move like very
- 31:20Speaker 4: few people on earth can do there it doesn't always
- 31:24Speaker 4: align with grinding the details and the hard work and
- 31:28Speaker 4: things like that. So now seeing him come into this
- 31:31Speaker 4: second year taking that super seriously, working on his body,
- 31:34Speaker 4: working on his technique, being like talking about those granular details,
- 31:39Speaker 4: and then again it's a handful of snaps, it's a
- 31:41Speaker 4: preseason game against a poor opponent, like one on one
- 31:45Speaker 4: poor opponent, all those grains assault included. It was so
- 31:49Speaker 4: pretty awesome to see that kind of dominance and just
- 31:54Speaker 4: wrecking the game, and that you know, don't I don't
- 31:58Speaker 4: need him to turn into Christians or anything like that.
- 32:01Speaker 4: But if we see progression from last year in the
- 32:06Speaker 4: sense of more often that we can just instead of
- 32:09Speaker 4: he had awesome flashes last year, but there were still
- 32:11Speaker 4: moments like he still he still had his moments where
- 32:13Speaker 4: he got washed out, he sawed his moments where he
- 32:15Speaker 4: over over penetrated.
- 32:16Speaker 2: He his moments.
- 32:18Speaker 4: Whether things needed if we now kind of turn that
- 32:21Speaker 4: up a little bit, where we clean up a little
- 32:23Speaker 4: bit of the off plays and we get more of
- 32:27Speaker 4: those dominant moments and those game wrecking chances, even when
- 32:30Speaker 4: it is situations like this where it's, hey, you have
- 32:34Speaker 4: to be able to take advantage when you have a
- 32:37Speaker 4: matchup advantage. And he did, and he didn't just take
- 32:40Speaker 4: advantage of it, he dominated it, like though, that's what
- 32:43Speaker 4: you need. That's those and that's you know, we'll get
- 32:45Speaker 4: to the coaching after we do defense. The excitement of
- 32:49Speaker 4: having a guy who can put people in a position
- 32:51Speaker 4: to take advantage of those things. You know, it's it's obvious,
- 32:54Speaker 4: it's on the nose for everybody watching on the broadcast
- 32:57Speaker 4: saw what we saw. But that was fun to see
- 32:59Speaker 4: him just kind of take over in those those moments.
- 33:03Speaker 1: Yeah, it was nice seeing him kind of shoot that
- 33:04Speaker 1: that first play, they ran zone away from him and
- 33:07Speaker 1: he kind of shot the back door on the center.
- 33:09Speaker 1: But didn't like the way he played it. I don't
- 33:12Speaker 1: know if his center played it wrong or how he
- 33:14Speaker 1: played it. He was able. He didn't really like have
- 33:16Speaker 1: to get upfield. He was able to just bline it
- 33:19Speaker 1: straight to the back. And yeah, I mean that that
- 33:23Speaker 1: movement ability. I'm excited to see that. I like we
- 33:27Speaker 1: were talking about when we were there today, Like, I'm
- 33:30Speaker 1: excited to see him excel more in that role. I
- 33:32Speaker 1: want to see what it looks like when people run
- 33:34Speaker 1: right at him and like, how does that, you know,
- 33:35Speaker 1: the ability to hold strong at the point of attack.
- 33:39Speaker 1: How is he improved in that regard? But his I
- 33:41Speaker 1: mean his block recognition last year, especially on like gap
- 33:43Speaker 1: scheme stuff and down block things we were seeing in
- 33:46Speaker 1: the preseason last year. He had several stops against Tampa
- 33:48Speaker 1: Bay where he recognized, you know, the guard in front
- 33:52Speaker 1: of him is pulling, and his eyes immediately are getting
- 33:54Speaker 1: to the down block that's come in his way. He's
- 33:56Speaker 1: fighting through it, he's making a play and it was encouraging. Yeah,
- 34:00Speaker 1: to see you know, the start that he had today,
- 34:01Speaker 1: two pressures, I believe, two tackles for loss, which was
- 34:05Speaker 1: nice to see in limited time. I also like that,
- 34:07Speaker 1: you know, the the left elbow, even though it's taped up,
- 34:10Speaker 1: embraced up, isn't really impacting him too much. So maybe
- 34:15Speaker 1: he just leaves it for aesthetic purposes because it kind
- 34:17Speaker 1: of looks pretty sweet. So if he wants to roll
- 34:19Speaker 1: with it and just kind of look, you know, kind
- 34:20Speaker 1: of like a baller like and do it. Hey, whatever
- 34:22Speaker 1: works for you. If it's not broken, don't fix it.
- 34:24Speaker 4: Lynn Vaal Joseph had to support his arm for like
- 34:27Speaker 4: eight years, so there you go.
- 34:29Speaker 1: There you go.
- 34:29Speaker 5: Yeah, whatever, Greg, I think to add to the bit,
- 34:32Speaker 5: you should also get one of those when you wear
- 34:34Speaker 5: your large human jersys.
- 34:36Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, tape it up, brace it up and tape
- 34:40Speaker 1: it up.
- 34:40Speaker 4: I don't actually like wearing football jerseys, Like I'm not
- 34:44Speaker 4: an old man. I like jerseys is totally cool for
- 34:47Speaker 4: people like to wear it, but like I do feel
- 34:49Speaker 4: weird wearing the jersey of another grown man and I'm
- 34:53Speaker 4: a grow Like it's just an odd thing for me.
- 34:54Speaker 2: But as it well, like I own it.
- 34:57Speaker 4: I got to lean into the bit and actually wear
- 34:59Speaker 4: so like the in fact that he did that, like
- 35:01Speaker 4: right off the bat, I was like, oh, hey, this
- 35:02Speaker 4: is fun.
- 35:03Speaker 2: That was pretty cool.
- 35:04Speaker 1: Yeah it was. I'm interested to go back and see
- 35:06Speaker 1: on the tape and kind of see what what he
- 35:09Speaker 1: had I know, on the first. I think, I'm like that.
- 35:12Speaker 1: I think it was on the sack or whicheverone. When
- 35:15Speaker 1: he's that, he looks like Bruce from Finding Nemo bearing
- 35:20Speaker 1: down on Bryce Young from behind there. I think he
- 35:23Speaker 1: was like, I think he worked his way through. It
- 35:26Speaker 1: was almost like him and Ed. I think him and
- 35:28Speaker 1: at Oliver kind of ran a stump, but Ed penetrated
- 35:30Speaker 1: and it looked like Walker was just kind of there
- 35:32Speaker 1: and then worked his way through and fought through. PFF
- 35:35Speaker 1: didn't track him with any like he had a zero
- 35:38Speaker 1: percent win rate today but had two pressures and they
- 35:42Speaker 1: had a twenty eight point six percent pressure rate, so
- 35:45Speaker 1: for them it means like he didn't win an individual matchup,
- 35:49Speaker 1: but he still got the pressure. So I'm interested. And
- 35:51Speaker 1: for what it's worth, he had the highest pressure rate
- 35:56Speaker 1: of any of the bills today at twenty eight point
- 35:59Speaker 1: six percent, which is fun for him in that regard,
- 36:02Speaker 1: So yeah, I'm interested kind of see what was he doing.
- 36:04Speaker 1: He also had that other one where I think it
- 36:06Speaker 1: was that he deflected it or led to it in
- 36:08Speaker 1: completion at the end of the first drive or maybe
- 36:11Speaker 1: the end of the second drive. So it's just good
- 36:13Speaker 1: to see him being active and they need any type
- 36:16Speaker 1: activity up front as they continue to go forward, especially
- 36:20Speaker 1: with all jokes aside, like Fiderian mathis suspended for three
- 36:24Speaker 1: games or whatever, and like there's other questionable things happening
- 36:27Speaker 1: at knows and we were talking about in the stands today,
- 36:31Speaker 1: like you know, Okay, is Landon Jackson going to be
- 36:33Speaker 1: something for you, as TJ. Sanders is going to be
- 36:35Speaker 1: something for you. We know Ed Oliver is a good player,
- 36:37Speaker 1: but sometimes he disappears. Sometimes he also gets hurt, Like
- 36:42Speaker 1: you've got all these kind of potential raps and other
- 36:47Speaker 1: worrisome spots. In a way, even though he's only in
- 36:51Speaker 1: his second year, Dion Walker might be like the least
- 36:56Speaker 1: questionable Bills defensive lineman, if that makes sense, Like could
- 37:01Speaker 1: you kind of just know what you're getting? And he's
- 37:03Speaker 1: he's still improving, there's still his room to grow, Like
- 37:06Speaker 1: I would say Ed Oliver's the best interior guy there.
- 37:09Speaker 1: But the question is, like it can he stay healthy?
- 37:11Speaker 1: Like is he gonna disappear at times like and then
- 37:14Speaker 1: the other guy?
- 37:15Speaker 4: How does it translate to this scheme like it is
- 37:17Speaker 4: he gonna fit the way we think? I saw this
- 37:20Speaker 4: come up and I wanted to save it to show
- 37:21Speaker 4: you because I thought you could bring it up. L
- 37:24Speaker 4: Batman agreed with you and posted it like the exact
- 37:28Speaker 4: same call, like when the zoom in of Dan Walker
- 37:33Speaker 4: smiling as he's doing it. And in the postgame in
- 37:36Speaker 4: the locker room interview, they asked him, I think it
- 37:39Speaker 4: was Catherain Fitzgerald asked him about the picture and he's like, oh,
- 37:43Speaker 4: it's probably I didn't realize I did that, but it's
- 37:45Speaker 4: probably because I saw brace young pump fake and I
- 37:48Speaker 4: thought he was going to throw it and I was
- 37:50Speaker 4: going to miss out on the sack, and when I
- 37:52Speaker 4: saw him tuck it down, I knew that he was
- 37:54Speaker 4: done for Yeah.
- 37:56Speaker 2: It was awesome.
- 37:57Speaker 4: It it was a great quote and he did look
- 38:01Speaker 4: like Bruce. So it's just perfect sure friends, perfect spot.
- 38:05Speaker 4: So count do you also want to gush about Dan
- 38:08Speaker 4: Walker or do you?
- 38:08Speaker 2: Guys?
- 38:09Speaker 4: I didn't know if other people played defense today, but
- 38:11Speaker 4: you guys appear to talk about them if they did.
- 38:13Speaker 5: I will give a shout out to two guys that
- 38:15Speaker 5: also play on the defensive line, just so that we
- 38:17Speaker 5: spread the love a little bit. I'll leave the Dion
- 38:20Speaker 5: Walker glaze for you. Oh listen, I love Dan Walker.
- 38:26Speaker 5: He's one of my favorite Bills too, but you are
- 38:28Speaker 5: the expert in that category, so I'll let you have that.
- 38:31Speaker 1: I'll start.
- 38:33Speaker 5: I'll start by giving a shout out to the guy
- 38:35Speaker 5: that lined up next to Dion Walker on the very
- 38:38Speaker 5: first snap of the Bill's first game of twenty twenty six,
- 38:41Speaker 5: which was Landon Jackson, who we mentioned briefly. Uh to
- 38:44Speaker 5: see him there over t J Sanders, I know we
- 38:47Speaker 5: talked about that. Maybe depending on the formation or the
- 38:51Speaker 5: context of that snap, it made sense. But just to
- 38:54Speaker 5: see Landon Jackson as a starter for the Bills was
- 38:58Speaker 5: really a good thing to see when you invest a
- 39:00Speaker 5: Day two pick in him, and he lost his first
- 39:02Speaker 5: season due to injury, and then he was just kind
- 39:04Speaker 5: of in limbo last year. So to see him work
- 39:07Speaker 5: his way all the way up to a starter after
- 39:09Speaker 5: changing his body type to align with this scheme more,
- 39:11Speaker 5: I was really glad to see that. And he was
- 39:13Speaker 5: crashing into the middle for to stuff some runs and
- 39:15Speaker 5: that really helped slow things down for Caroline in those
- 39:17Speaker 5: first couple drives. The other guy I want to shout
- 39:19Speaker 5: out is a guy that really hasn't made any noise
- 39:22Speaker 5: at all in training camp from what I've seen, and
- 39:24Speaker 5: then had two sacks on the same drive. Mike Dana
- 39:26Speaker 5: I thought when we brought him and he was going
- 39:29Speaker 5: to legitimately push Javon Solomon for a spot on the
- 39:32Speaker 5: fifty three menters roster and also provide insurance if Michael
- 39:35Speaker 5: Hoyt wasn't ready to go. Well, Michael Hoyt was ready
- 39:37Speaker 5: to go, and Javon Solomon looked great, and you heard
- 39:39Speaker 5: nothing about Dana. And then he has two great pass
- 39:42Speaker 5: rush reps on the same drive on first down and
- 39:44Speaker 5: on fourth down to sack Kenny Pickett. And I was like, oh, yeah,
- 39:48Speaker 5: I remembered we still have Mike Dana. And this is
- 39:50Speaker 5: a guy that has started for the Super Bowl winning
- 39:52Speaker 5: Kansas City Chiefs and that Steve Spagnola defense. So maybe
- 39:56Speaker 5: we were too quick to write off that Mike Dana
- 39:57Speaker 5: edition this offseason.
- 40:00Speaker 1: M OK, yeah, I like that.
- 40:03Speaker 4: I like that call because again to say, not the
- 40:06Speaker 4: exact same as the backup quarterback thing, but like I
- 40:09Speaker 4: had kind of been like, all right, he'll just be
- 40:11Speaker 4: like a veteran camp body and just be this year's
- 40:13Speaker 4: Lyle Collins or whatever. But you know you're coming in
- 40:17Speaker 4: having production again, you're talking about a guy who's paid
- 40:20Speaker 4: as a starter for a super Bowl caliber team, not
- 40:24Speaker 4: that not that far in the past, against a team
- 40:27Speaker 4: that doesn't have great tackle depth and whoever their third
- 40:32Speaker 4: or fourth option was at that point. So you're supposed
- 40:34Speaker 4: to dominate those in that scenario. But he did, and
- 40:36Speaker 4: you have given credit like he did. He did what
- 40:38Speaker 4: he was supposed to do. And you know, I don't.
- 40:44Speaker 4: I don't know that I've seen anything from Javon Solomon
- 40:48Speaker 4: that makes me think.
- 40:49Speaker 2: I don't want to be unfair, I.
- 40:51Speaker 4: Haven't seen anything that makes me think he's anything more
- 40:53Speaker 4: than Sam Franklin is as a safety.
- 40:56Speaker 1: How dare you speak of Sam Franklin in that regard.
- 41:01Speaker 4: In the sense that like all anyone ever brings up
- 41:03Speaker 4: to me is like, well, yeah, but it's a defensive
- 41:04Speaker 4: end that plays four phases.
- 41:05Speaker 2: A special team is a big cool.
- 41:08Speaker 4: But like, like, I don't that doesn't like I can
- 41:12Speaker 4: have a and a lot of people play.
- 41:15Speaker 2: People have to play special teams.
- 41:16Speaker 5: Hey, I special teams.
- 41:20Speaker 4: He does black a kick every now and then, So
- 41:24Speaker 4: I don't like it's fine, Like I'm not it's a bonus.
- 41:29Speaker 4: That's a proper phrasing. It's a bonus when you have
- 41:32Speaker 4: a roster caliber player who can also contribute on special teams.
- 41:37Speaker 4: So like the fact that Mikoel Hardman can be a
- 41:39Speaker 4: functional wide receiver and not like hurt actively hurt you
- 41:43Speaker 4: if he has to come in and play snaps is cool,
- 41:45Speaker 4: Like that is a benefit. We've had guys in the
- 41:48Speaker 4: past who were not functional position players, who were only
- 41:52Speaker 4: on the rest for special teams. You never wanted them
- 41:54Speaker 4: to play in those nes to the point where we
- 41:56Speaker 4: brought up practice squad guys to play instead of him
- 41:59Speaker 4: when you need to scrimmage snaps. So I'm cool with
- 42:03Speaker 4: that for situations like that. Like again, Hardman Dante Pettis
- 42:06Speaker 4: are a perfect example where that's a functional roster spot
- 42:09Speaker 4: where they can come in and play functional snaps. I
- 42:12Speaker 4: don't know that we could have Javon Solomon play to
- 42:16Speaker 4: this point. I haven't seen evidence that he's ready to
- 42:20Speaker 4: play scrimmage snaps at defensive end in the NFL. And
- 42:26Speaker 4: Mike Dana can and has and is also not as
- 42:30Speaker 4: old as people think that he is, so I care
- 42:33Speaker 4: way more about like, oh, okay, well, wouldn't that mean
- 42:38Speaker 4: someone else, including maybe Dana, has to play some special
- 42:41Speaker 4: team snaps. Yes, but if if there is a higher
- 42:47Speaker 4: likelihood that, hey, if we need snaps from one of
- 42:50Speaker 4: our fifth defensive events or fifth outside linebackers, our fifth edgeresser,
- 42:54Speaker 4: and they determine that, hey, we will get more contribution
- 42:57Speaker 4: if that guy has to be Mike Dana than if
- 42:59Speaker 4: that guy is Javon Solomon, well then he should get
- 43:02Speaker 4: the roster spot, and they'll figure like, hey, that's why
- 43:05Speaker 4: we hire special teams coordinators. Here's the humans you have
- 43:08Speaker 4: to work with. Build me for units that you can
- 43:12Speaker 4: out of these guys like he Javon Solomon is not,
- 43:15Speaker 4: is not Sam Franklin. Where Sam Franklin is a contributor enough,
- 43:19Speaker 4: like such a high level contributor on special teams that
- 43:23Speaker 4: that drives a roster decision. Javon Solomon doesn't contribute at
- 43:28Speaker 4: that level on special teams that it should drive the decision. Now, again,
- 43:31Speaker 4: if they're equal, it's the tiebreaker and he should make
- 43:34Speaker 4: the roster over him. But if they're not equal and
- 43:38Speaker 4: it's only a minor difference, but Mike dan is a
- 43:40Speaker 4: better defensive end, well then he should make the roster
- 43:42Speaker 4: and we'll figure the rest out later.
- 43:44Speaker 1: Yeah, I think that's a fair point. I'm interested to
- 43:46Speaker 1: see what you know, especially with Hoyt being where he
- 43:51Speaker 1: is fingers crossed, no jinks. You've got Rousseau, Chubb and Hoyt.
- 43:57Speaker 1: And then I really feel like Edge four through six
- 44:03Speaker 1: is like the Joker with the pool cue and just
- 44:06Speaker 1: throwing it in and like who wants to make the team?
- 44:08Speaker 1: Like I am. It could be Solomon, it could be Dana.
- 44:12Speaker 1: I want to see what he did on tape today.
- 44:15Speaker 1: But I think like the based off of Camp and
- 44:19Speaker 1: the Blue and Red, Andre Jones has probably been like
- 44:23Speaker 1: the best edge player that isn't one of the top three.
- 44:26Speaker 1: Like if I had to give it to somebody, I
- 44:27Speaker 1: would give it to Andre Jones off of Camp and
- 44:29Speaker 1: the Blue and Red. He was a guy who I
- 44:32Speaker 1: kept again not watching for anybody in particular, but they
- 44:35Speaker 1: like like you would just see like there goes fifty nine.
- 44:36Speaker 1: I'm like, who's fifty nine Again, I'm like, oh, it's
- 44:38Speaker 1: andre Jones. And then like the next day fifty nine
- 44:39Speaker 1: would do something again, I'm like who's fifty nine? Like
- 44:42Speaker 1: it's Andre Jones. And he had a couple of real
- 44:44Speaker 1: nice plays in the Blue and Red. Yeah, Junior Train I.
- 44:51Speaker 5: Was about to bring him up just to a p
- 44:53Speaker 5: because he brought up last week that we were talking
- 44:54Speaker 5: about the edge rum and I didn't mention Andre Jones.
- 44:58Speaker 4: For people to yell at you, Anthony Pernatt mentioning TJ.
- 45:01Speaker 4: Parker when you skipped from the top three. The other
- 45:04Speaker 4: four got that.
- 45:05Speaker 1: Well for who I think has performed great, and also
- 45:08Speaker 1: too not that I don't want to pour cold water
- 45:10Speaker 1: like TJ. Parker's sacked today. It was a tight end
- 45:15Speaker 1: that was blocking him, and the tight end held him
- 45:17Speaker 1: up with the line and then Parker pushed him through
- 45:19Speaker 1: because the quarterback had the ball for like three and
- 45:21Speaker 1: a half four seconds. Like it was good that he
- 45:23Speaker 1: did that, But I didn't see that as like well,
- 45:26Speaker 1: and again this is for me. It's in totality of
- 45:28Speaker 1: what everything that's happened at camp in the Blue and
- 45:30Speaker 1: Red where I feel like Jones has done stuff. But yeah,
- 45:33Speaker 1: I get he's not the first pick from this year's class,
- 45:35Speaker 1: so that's probably not a favorable thing.
- 45:37Speaker 4: Yeah, but again I don't I'm not concerned about TJ.
- 45:41Speaker 2: Parker.
- 45:41Speaker 4: There's been other good flashes that I've heard, other good
- 45:43Speaker 4: comments about it. He did have a sack and another
- 45:46Speaker 4: tackle for a loss in another pressure like there were
- 45:48Speaker 4: other insider another quarterback hit. So we'll see, buddy, don't
- 45:52Speaker 4: I don't know that he flashed a ton for me
- 45:55Speaker 4: outside of the sack itself to be able to do that.
- 46:00Speaker 4: I'll be interested to see what else was was out
- 46:02Speaker 4: there to be able to watch. Agree, So maybe in
- 46:08Speaker 4: the back end anything that this stood out to you positively, Anthony,
- 46:12Speaker 4: guys that flashed for you. And again this is again
- 46:15Speaker 4: like offensive line, really hard to do without seeing it
- 46:17Speaker 4: because watching guys in coverage, I can. I can assume
- 46:21Speaker 4: that the fact that the defense you know, went three
- 46:24Speaker 4: and out three straight and should have been four straight
- 46:26Speaker 4: if not for a Geno stone place pace massive start
- 46:30Speaker 4: the Geno Stone love early that obviously the coverage had
- 46:34Speaker 4: to be pretty good because Bryce Young didn't have anywhere to.
- 46:37Speaker 2: Go with the ball.
- 46:38Speaker 4: So I'm gonna assume that it was good. But I
- 46:41Speaker 4: don't know, you know, there wasn't a ton there. Well
- 46:44Speaker 4: timed Jalen Kilgore blitz that was encouraging, obviously, can I Walker,
- 46:50Speaker 4: you know, making a gutsy uh you know, jumping route
- 46:53Speaker 4: for an interception and the team going crazy for him
- 46:57Speaker 4: knowing undrafted free agent guy who I think didn't practic
- 47:00Speaker 4: this this week and like had to kind of gut
- 47:02Speaker 4: out some conditioning to be able to get in the
- 47:04Speaker 4: game just in case the team needed bodies in that spot.
- 47:07Speaker 4: And you could see the team reacting to that. Those
- 47:10Speaker 4: were all really really cool. I love that, but it
- 47:13Speaker 4: was hard. I don't know exactly what else may have
- 47:16Speaker 4: stood out there without being able to watch the other piece.
- 47:19Speaker 1: Yeah, it's tough without being able to see foot tape perspective,
- 47:22Speaker 1: but it was nice. With our seats you could see
- 47:24Speaker 1: the covered shells in a lot of ways. Yeah, I
- 47:28Speaker 1: like the good place from CANi Walker. You know, that
- 47:30Speaker 1: interception was great. He also got beat over the top
- 47:35Speaker 1: on that one. Literally as we were talking about him
- 47:37Speaker 1: and talking about his college tape, got beat up the
- 47:40Speaker 1: sideline a little bit, which.
- 47:42Speaker 2: Would have been a touchdown.
- 47:43Speaker 1: But yeah, that's gonna happen. Like, he doesn't have the
- 47:46Speaker 1: best like foot speed or twitch or long speed, but
- 47:49Speaker 1: I mean he's big, he's strong, he's physical, he's long like,
- 47:52Speaker 1: and he wants to beat you up. So let him
- 47:54Speaker 1: put him on the line, let him press get his
- 47:56Speaker 1: hands on guys. He's got good eyes and good instincts
- 47:58Speaker 1: as there's some athleticalnotations there. Kill gor Yeah, that Blitz
- 48:03Speaker 1: was nice. There was a mistackle that I didn't like
- 48:05Speaker 1: from kill Gore, but that you know, I think kind
- 48:08Speaker 1: of just for as much of a you know, bigger body,
- 48:13Speaker 1: like big Nickel type candidate who is gonna play true safety.
- 48:15Speaker 1: Now that happens to him from time to time, Like
- 48:16Speaker 1: he hits, but he's not like a thumper necessarily where
- 48:19Speaker 1: he's going through dudes, I think he plays them more towards,
- 48:22Speaker 1: more towards the athleticism that he possesses than he does
- 48:25Speaker 1: like the size and frame that he necessarily possesses. From
- 48:27Speaker 1: a physicality standpoint, I I am not gonna speak too
- 48:34Speaker 1: much on because I know everybody already does. Like I'm
- 48:36Speaker 1: just Gino Stone and Jamar Hamlin are fine his backups.
- 48:39Speaker 1: It is definitely like not fun though, when you come
- 48:42Speaker 1: out of a game and like you're starting, even if
- 48:44Speaker 1: it's preseason, but you're starting. Safeties are like oh yeah,
- 48:49Speaker 1: Stone into Marrow Hamlin. Although they did look sick with
- 48:52Speaker 1: like the pops of red underneath the all white jerseys,
- 48:54Speaker 1: I thought aesthetically they looked very good today and I
- 48:57Speaker 1: was very I agree.
- 48:58Speaker 4: I actually think Genostone looks cool as a football fair.
- 49:01Speaker 4: I wish he was good, but he looks cool as
- 49:03Speaker 4: a football player.
- 49:05Speaker 1: Yeah, he does, like he he You know, the aesthetic
- 49:07Speaker 1: was rocking, Damar was rocking a similar aesthetic. It's funny
- 49:10Speaker 1: that they're both like doing the same thing, and I
- 49:12Speaker 1: feel like it's like, all, what are the odds you're
- 49:15Speaker 1: both doing that. I'm like that the aesthetics aren't good
- 49:17Speaker 1: enough to win the fan base back over to you.
- 49:20Speaker 2: I want to see Kilgary to get ready quickly, or I.
- 49:24Speaker 1: Like, Jalen, you you need to wear more red. You
- 49:27Speaker 1: need pops of red to like. Don't let them take
- 49:29Speaker 1: this from you.
- 49:30Speaker 2: You can't let them out aesthetic.
- 49:32Speaker 1: You Yeah, you can't get out aesthetic already.
- 49:35Speaker 2: You're the young hipnack. You're supposed to know what this
- 49:37Speaker 2: looks like.
- 49:38Speaker 1: Come on, step upthetics, Jalen, what do you do it?
- 49:41Speaker 6: Jayleen? Kilguar shows up with the arm brace the next day.
- 49:45Speaker 1: Oh my god, and the pops are red, so he's
- 49:47Speaker 1: rocking brace.
- 49:48Speaker 4: It used to be like the little thin arm bands,
- 49:51Speaker 4: like multiple little thin armbands at each like muscle spot.
- 49:54Speaker 1: Oh my god, I love those. Somebody did that once
- 49:56Speaker 1: and they got I think they got fined in the
- 49:57Speaker 1: NFL for it at all. They know, fun leagues. I'm
- 50:01Speaker 1: interested to see what you know. Igbin Nosen got a
- 50:03Speaker 1: good chunk of snaps. I want to see how he looked.
- 50:06Speaker 1: But just immediate flashes. It was you know, can I
- 50:09Speaker 1: walk or pop? But also you know, some worrisome stuff.
- 50:11Speaker 1: And then safety group is kind of underwhelming from a
- 50:17Speaker 1: true backup like safety three, Safety four, Like we were
- 50:19Speaker 1: talking I this is like the seventeenth time I've said
- 50:21Speaker 1: this in this episode, like we were talking about today
- 50:24Speaker 1: when we were at the game. You know, Gino Stone
- 50:27Speaker 1: into mor Hamlin are fine. You know if there your
- 50:29Speaker 1: safety three and safety four, they'ren't starting regularly for you.
- 50:31Speaker 1: But it is you know, if you're in the preseason,
- 50:33Speaker 1: it is kind of like, oh like man, I just
- 50:36Speaker 1: kind of watch back there.
- 50:37Speaker 2: But it is what it is.
- 50:39Speaker 4: I will say the I didn't see multiple negative flashes,
- 50:43Speaker 4: but you can't have elms or ram into a tight
- 50:48Speaker 4: end and third and nineteen when the ball's in the air.
- 50:51Speaker 4: So for a guy who I think of as like
- 50:53Speaker 4: a smart player, like you got to have more situational
- 50:56Speaker 4: awareness there. I don't think you had a bad game.
- 50:58Speaker 4: I'm not like, oh, all of a sudden concerned or
- 51:00Speaker 4: off that train, but like, hey, gotta have a little
- 51:04Speaker 4: more heads up in that moment than like it's third nineteen.
- 51:08Speaker 4: You gotta trust, like, get your arms up, don't ram
- 51:11Speaker 4: into the tight end running up the seam out of
- 51:13Speaker 4: all that he wasn't gonna catch either way, but like,
- 51:16Speaker 4: don't give the ref the chance to.
- 51:18Speaker 2: Throw that flag.
- 51:20Speaker 4: I watched a couple other snaps specifically watching him. Saw
- 51:23Speaker 4: a nice handoff on one play where he carried a
- 51:26Speaker 4: guy across his own handed off to the outside third
- 51:31Speaker 4: really well and then cut back, you know and got
- 51:33Speaker 4: himself ready, So like seemed to be pretty you know,
- 51:36Speaker 4: spatially aware and in that cause I don't think anyone
- 51:39Speaker 4: has any concerns about him coming downhill, you know, in
- 51:43Speaker 4: tackling in run defense. But like the only reason I
- 51:47Speaker 4: already know Dorian Williams could do that too. I hoping
- 51:49Speaker 4: one of them can cover, and one of them could
- 51:51Speaker 4: be there and understand where they're supposed to be in space,
- 51:53Speaker 4: so that I'm gonna when I rewatch, I'm gonna watch
- 51:56Speaker 4: that and be able to see how he looks in
- 52:00Speaker 4: Bridge and gonna be curious to that, how about.
- 52:02Speaker 2: You, Kim.
- 52:02Speaker 5: Yeah, So I'm gonna piggyback off the linebacker discussion. That
- 52:06Speaker 5: position group has been my favorite to monitor this offseason
- 52:10Speaker 5: because there's so many unknowns, there's so many question marks,
- 52:13Speaker 5: and I think it's time we have a conversation about,
- 52:17Speaker 5: if it's not a parent already, how the team views
- 52:20Speaker 5: Joe Andresen compared to some of the other linebackers on
- 52:23Speaker 5: this roster. After free agency ended, he was still the
- 52:27Speaker 5: second most experienced player in that room, behind Trow Bernard,
- 52:30Speaker 5: and then they draft Caleber elms or Or. Behind Bernard
- 52:34Speaker 5: and Dorian Williams, they draft Caleb elms Or and Kanty
- 52:37Speaker 5: Jenkins seems to leapfrog him after being a UDFA who
- 52:40Speaker 5: spent most of the year on the practice squads.
- 52:43Speaker 1: Is inevitable.
- 52:45Speaker 6: Oh, I'm full Kantay Jenkins.
- 52:47Speaker 5: Yeah, And I don't think I've seen a single report
- 52:52Speaker 5: this summer. And this continued today in the preseason game
- 52:54Speaker 5: of Andresen getting a rep ahead of elms Or or Jenkins.
- 52:59Speaker 5: And I mean he's out there with Otis Reese like
- 53:03Speaker 5: fighting for a practice squad spot. Probably and so I
- 53:06Speaker 5: don't mean to upset the people of Lancaster, and I
- 53:10Speaker 5: know he's the hometown hero there. I mean no disrespect
- 53:13Speaker 5: when I say this, but I think we need to
- 53:14Speaker 5: be honest about where Joe and Riesen sits on this
- 53:17Speaker 5: depth chart. I know the unofficial depth chart that came
- 53:19Speaker 5: out had him listed on the second team with k EO.
- 53:22Speaker 5: But if you're use the evidence that the coaching staff
- 53:25Speaker 5: is showing you he is the fifth linebacker for a
- 53:29Speaker 5: scheme that typically carries four linebackers, if you.
- 53:32Speaker 1: Use your eyes, it is telling you that he is
- 53:35Speaker 1: not on the second.
- 53:36Speaker 4: Team correct well, and it's I mean, it's no different
- 53:40Speaker 4: than my comments on Jebon Solomon. They're no different than
- 53:43Speaker 4: you know, there are guys that you're going to have
- 53:46Speaker 4: to Yes, there are a few guys who can make
- 53:48Speaker 4: this roster purely from a special team's ability. I don't
- 53:52Speaker 4: know that he's won. I think that's something where hey
- 53:54Speaker 4: or that he's not discernibly better. Kanton Jenkins can do
- 53:58Speaker 4: does what you do on teams as well, So that's
- 54:01Speaker 4: who you have to beat out here that you're you're
- 54:03Speaker 4: competing against those guys. So we'll see where that goes.
- 54:07Speaker 4: But yeah, I think that's that's become fairly clear here.
- 54:11Speaker 4: Before we close things out here, maybe let's talk a
- 54:13Speaker 4: little bit about the coaching UH staff. Some interesting things there.
- 54:17Speaker 4: I thought that for anyone who didn't hear the press
- 54:20Speaker 4: conference one, I've been not critical, but I've kind of
- 54:24Speaker 4: helped give some context to people that, hey, Joe Brady
- 54:27Speaker 4: is not a polished professional speaker, and that I think
- 54:30Speaker 4: the way the players react to him, and how you
- 54:32Speaker 4: hear other really smart football people talk about him, how
- 54:35Speaker 4: Sean Payton talks about him, how like other people that
- 54:38Speaker 4: I really respect. Davis Webb has made really positive comments
- 54:41Speaker 4: abou him, all the people around LSU. You hear people
- 54:44Speaker 4: talk about him and his acumen in his football IQ.
- 54:48Speaker 4: I trust the fact that that translates. I think it
- 54:50Speaker 4: translates in a locker room and in a like training
- 54:55Speaker 4: room Stampa practice, you know, uh, you know, game prep room,
- 55:00Speaker 4: where he can be more off the cuff and in
- 55:03Speaker 4: all sincerity. I think it's where it's okay for him
- 55:05Speaker 4: to say the F word every like third word, because
- 55:08Speaker 4: I don't think he's good at filtering that very well.
- 55:12Speaker 4: Today in his postgame press conference was the first time
- 55:14Speaker 4: where I was like, oh, that sounds like an NFL
- 55:17Speaker 4: head coach, and it was like the first time that
- 55:20Speaker 4: I was like, oh, I think he's kind of coming
- 55:23Speaker 4: into his own a little bit, and that I felt
- 55:26Speaker 4: a bit more confident of a guy stepping in. And
- 55:30Speaker 4: he brought up here, so start this comment came up here.
- 55:35Speaker 4: He mentioned here that they were waiting and that he
- 55:39Speaker 4: was looking for situations during the game to work on
- 55:42Speaker 4: how the communication would work, and that hey, I waited
- 55:46Speaker 4: all game long because I wanted to be able to
- 55:48Speaker 4: go through a challenge to see how the communication would
- 55:51Speaker 4: go from the group to me with the with the
- 55:53Speaker 4: head coach. And it got to the point where, hey,
- 55:55Speaker 4: it's a potential fumble. It's now three minutes and thirty
- 56:00Speaker 4: eight seconds left in the game. You can't challenge after
- 56:03Speaker 4: the two minute drill. He had both challenges in his pocket,
- 56:06Speaker 4: like he wanted to see how the mechanism would work,
- 56:10Speaker 4: and you're going to take a time out before the
- 56:12Speaker 4: fourth and one play. Anyways, it is a perfectly good
- 56:15Speaker 4: scenario to test that out, to be able to go
- 56:19Speaker 4: through there in a preseason game. Otherwise you throw them
- 56:21Speaker 4: away because it's again, you know the two minute warning.
- 56:25Speaker 4: There's a minute thirty eight seconds. You were going to
- 56:27Speaker 4: have two more things to go through there. So he said,
- 56:29Speaker 4: you know, hey, I was just looking for a scenario
- 56:32Speaker 4: where I could plausibly you're not going to just literally
- 56:34Speaker 4: throw it on a random play. But there's the first
- 56:36Speaker 4: time that something came in that he had the chance
- 56:39Speaker 4: to be able to see how the mechanism was going
- 56:41Speaker 4: to work and how the communication went. So for anyone
- 56:45Speaker 4: who didn't listen to the postgame press conference going through
- 56:48Speaker 4: there just was an interesting nugget that I would have thought, like, oh,
- 56:51Speaker 4: he must have had a bad angle. Oh he must
- 56:53Speaker 4: not have gotten good information. He's like, no, he knew
- 56:56Speaker 4: that it wasn't going to be overturned. It just was, hey,
- 57:00Speaker 4: I'm going to take a time out. Anyways, I'm about
- 57:01Speaker 4: to lose the two challenges in a minute thirty eight seconds,
- 57:04Speaker 4: and I want to see how this works, and I
- 57:06Speaker 4: want to go through the communication with my guys and
- 57:08Speaker 4: go through the steps of how it was doing. So,
- 57:10Speaker 4: you know, again, just some context to the idea that
- 57:13Speaker 4: he wasn't all of a sudden just bad at throwing
- 57:15Speaker 4: challenges there.
- 57:16Speaker 2: But I like that.
- 57:17Speaker 4: I like that a lot of our conversation was about
- 57:19Speaker 4: the excitement of the guy on the other side of
- 57:21Speaker 4: the ball more than that, Brady.
- 57:23Speaker 1: That's fair. Yeah, it's a cool debut potentially for Jim Leonard,
- 57:27Speaker 1: just you know, the odd front stuff, some of the
- 57:30Speaker 1: coverage things we saw on the back end. We'll see,
- 57:32Speaker 1: you know what the tape show is really from. I
- 57:35Speaker 1: don't think they're going to show their hand too much,
- 57:36Speaker 1: but we already saw again the Colin noted it right
- 57:39Speaker 1: off the bat, and I think I I think I
- 57:42Speaker 1: posted something about it when it happened to on that
- 57:43Speaker 1: first drive. Yeah, we're starting out with you know, odd front,
- 57:47Speaker 1: tight front stuff, and then on third down we're playing
- 57:50Speaker 1: straight up man coverage across the board and like, man,
- 57:53Speaker 1: just like right there there was just like a nice
- 57:55Speaker 1: punch in the face if you needed of. Like there's
- 57:57Speaker 1: a new defensive coordinator and there's new philosophy and identity
- 58:00Speaker 1: uh to the defense. And yeah, I'm excited to see
- 58:04Speaker 1: what we continue to get week in and week out
- 58:06Speaker 1: in the preseason with him. Again, I don't think it's
- 58:08Speaker 1: gonna be anything revelatory. I think they're going to kind
- 58:11Speaker 1: of keep it close to the vest, but a good
- 58:14Speaker 1: start for you know, what looks like probably hands down
- 58:19Speaker 1: the best defense in NFL history. I don't really think
- 58:21Speaker 1: there's any way to get.
- 58:22Speaker 2: Around second behind eighty five Bears.
- 58:24Speaker 1: Maybe yeah, yeah, not to overreact, but every defense in
- 58:30Speaker 1: NFL history pales in comparison to the twenty twenty six
- 58:34Speaker 1: preseason Buffalo Bills defense thus far. And I'm excited for
- 58:40Speaker 1: the future of.
- 58:42Speaker 4: Well, even the fact he couldn't help himself like some
- 58:44Speaker 4: of those delayed blitzes that were perfectly timed, or he
- 58:48Speaker 4: knew what was what was coming, just like a couple
- 58:51Speaker 4: of those, you know, and they turned into I don't
- 58:53Speaker 4: think either a results in sex, but both Bernard and
- 58:56Speaker 4: Kilgore batty. Yeah, they both on the third down or
- 58:59Speaker 4: fourth where they came untouched because it was just perfect
- 59:02Speaker 4: timing him knowing what was coming there.
- 59:03Speaker 2: And like, hey, Jim, keep a couple of those in
- 59:06Speaker 2: the back pocket. It's preseason.
- 59:07Speaker 4: Let's not give give a too much away here, but
- 59:11Speaker 4: you know, just a very encouraging start for somebody who
- 59:14Speaker 4: we're excited about.
- 59:15Speaker 2: And I will say.
- 59:19Speaker 1: Comment, I saw it an immediately tongue.
- 59:22Speaker 4: I will give just a touch of cold water here.
- 59:27Speaker 4: If there's any history to the how the cycle of
- 59:33Speaker 4: head coaching things work. It's not unforeseen that someone in
- 59:37Speaker 4: their first year has that rocket chance. But I'll give
- 59:41Speaker 4: the same idea the Grant Udinsky and Nate shieldhouses of
- 59:44Speaker 4: this year. It is very very rare, even for incredibly
- 59:48Speaker 4: well thought of coaches to get their first head coaching job.
- 59:52Speaker 4: You know, you got to remember Clint Kubiak, Joe Brady,
- 59:54Speaker 4: guys like that. We're getting head coaching interviews last year
- 59:57Speaker 4: and Joe Brady two years ago to go through there.
- 1:00:00Speaker 4: So it is very to this point, Jim Leonard has
- 1:00:03Speaker 4: never interviewed for a head coach and it's the first
- 1:00:05Speaker 4: time coordinator in the NFL. So could he make such
- 1:00:09Speaker 4: a difference that we skyrocket and go through you know,
- 1:00:15Speaker 4: that kind of thing that quickly. Of course, it's possible,
- 1:00:17Speaker 4: and it could be that amazing and we just benefit
- 1:00:19Speaker 4: from it.
- 1:00:21Speaker 2: But it is that kind of thing.
- 1:00:26Speaker 4: That, you know, it's far more likely that we probably
- 1:00:29Speaker 4: get a two year window and then it happens he
- 1:00:31Speaker 4: probably does get head coach.
- 1:00:31Speaker 2: And interviews this year and we probably lose in the
- 1:00:33Speaker 2: end of next year.
- 1:00:34Speaker 1: Ever, he's stay forever and just stay with us and
- 1:00:37Speaker 1: it's going to be great, and he's not going to
- 1:00:38Speaker 1: go anywhere. I don't know. I don't know why we're
- 1:00:40Speaker 1: even trying to put in the universe. He's not going
- 1:00:41Speaker 1: to go anywhere.
- 1:00:42Speaker 2: Why.
- 1:00:42Speaker 1: No, he's gonna stay and we're all gonna be happy
- 1:00:45Speaker 1: and we're all gonna sing songs together and dance around
- 1:00:47Speaker 1: the campfire as he's here for years and years to come.
- 1:00:51Speaker 5: And I feel like you're ironically calling back to our
- 1:00:53Speaker 5: conversation about obsession earlier.
- 1:00:56Speaker 1: Oh that's funny, Yeah, I kind of am. Yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 1:01:00Speaker 1: that's fair.
- 1:01:02Speaker 4: Count anything else to sit out to you, from coaching scheme,
- 1:01:05Speaker 4: anything else who we didn't touch on.
- 1:01:07Speaker 5: Yeah, So this is something I didn't even really notice
- 1:01:10Speaker 5: or recognize until Cooked Books game in the comments just
- 1:01:14Speaker 5: brought this up. And I'm not saying I criticized Joe
- 1:01:16Speaker 5: Brady for this, because I understand why he didn't. But
- 1:01:19Speaker 5: we never saw a punting situation in this game. We
- 1:01:21Speaker 5: never got to see Tommy Doman and so obviously not
- 1:01:25Speaker 5: that I would expect them to punt at first and
- 1:01:27Speaker 5: ten with three seconds left, But if he did that,
- 1:01:30Speaker 5: I wouldn't have been upset. I wouldn't have been mad
- 1:01:32Speaker 5: just to get the punting unit out there.
- 1:01:34Speaker 2: I won't lie.
- 1:01:35Speaker 4: I would have had more respect for him of like
- 1:01:37Speaker 4: fitting in. But so so, I'll give you a legitimate reason.
- 1:01:42Speaker 4: He didn't Dave Kanalis at that point intentionally kick the
- 1:01:47Speaker 4: ball out of bounds when they kicked to us, and
- 1:01:50Speaker 4: did not try to do an outside's kick, did not
- 1:01:52Speaker 4: try to do anything in a sense of like, hey,
- 1:01:55Speaker 4: we've had a good day, let's not get anybody else
- 1:01:57Speaker 4: hurt in a goofy weird thing.
- 1:02:00Speaker 2: It isn't necessary.
- 1:02:01Speaker 4: And to then have him do that and you come
- 1:02:05Speaker 4: out there and go like, oh, I actually want to
- 1:02:07Speaker 4: see my guys get a rep in punting, get your kids,
- 1:02:09Speaker 4: your squad out there, we're gonna run this back.
- 1:02:12Speaker 2: Would not have been appropriate to do in that Actually
- 1:02:17Speaker 2: I need to see.
- 1:02:19Speaker 4: So to the counter to that, if because technically they
- 1:02:23Speaker 4: had scored and the game wasn't officially over and blah
- 1:02:26Speaker 4: blah blah, if Canalis had have done a on site's kick,
- 1:02:31Speaker 4: I one hundred percent would have wanted to see that.
- 1:02:34Speaker 4: I would have wanted them to run the clock down
- 1:02:36Speaker 4: to like three seconds, take a time out, and then
- 1:02:39Speaker 4: punt just to be able to see the thing go.
- 1:02:42Speaker 4: So he did the appropriate respectful thing in the moment.
- 1:02:46Speaker 4: But I kind of wish Canalis woud have tried to
- 1:02:48Speaker 4: keep going so that we could have done that just
- 1:02:50Speaker 4: for the fun money.
- 1:02:51Speaker 6: Why does our new coach have to be such a
- 1:02:53Speaker 6: stand up guy?
- 1:02:54Speaker 4: Yeah, hey, look QuickBooks, he brings up a good point.
- 1:02:57Speaker 4: You don't think the Panthers would want to see their
- 1:02:59Speaker 4: punt returner. See, it's really great.
- 1:03:02Speaker 2: I was doing it.
- 1:03:03Speaker 1: To see what your part return of looks like.
- 1:03:05Speaker 2: I was doing it.
- 1:03:06Speaker 4: I just want to give you the reps, man, I
- 1:03:08Speaker 4: just just want to give you the chance. All right,
- 1:03:10Speaker 4: Any final things here for the people before we let
- 1:03:13Speaker 4: them go enjoy the evening.
- 1:03:15Speaker 1: No, I think there were some positive things to take
- 1:03:18Speaker 1: away as we talked about here, and some things that
- 1:03:20Speaker 1: maybe the table will shed some light on. And either way,
- 1:03:24Speaker 1: first game, the preseason, stay healthy, get healthy, We'll see
- 1:03:28Speaker 1: what happens in week two, see what happens in week three,
- 1:03:30Speaker 1: and then we'll come out swinging in week one against
- 1:03:36Speaker 1: For me personally, my AFC favorite to represent the AFC year,
- 1:03:41Speaker 1: A lot of people thinking that yeah they're if they're off,
- 1:03:43Speaker 1: If the Texans offense can just be halfway decent with
- 1:03:46Speaker 1: and I think they can. With what their defense is
- 1:03:48Speaker 1: going to be, they're gonna be a problem. But yeah,
- 1:03:49Speaker 1: they've got a good test in week one, get out
- 1:03:51Speaker 1: of the preseason healthy. But I do think there are
- 1:03:54Speaker 1: you know, and this is the preseason essentially a meme
- 1:03:57Speaker 1: of itself at this point, with people trying to you know,
- 1:03:59Speaker 1: extra appollate too much and build on too much. But
- 1:04:03Speaker 1: I do think they were sincerely encouraging things schematically, some
- 1:04:06Speaker 1: bread crumbs to pick up if you know, you're looking
- 1:04:08Speaker 1: in the right spot. And then a couple of good
- 1:04:10Speaker 1: individual player performances. So that's just off a broadcast, and
- 1:04:13Speaker 1: not even broadcast, that's of us seeing it, you know,
- 1:04:16Speaker 1: in person, not being able to like rewind a bunch.
- 1:04:18Speaker 1: So I'm thinking the table shine a more positive light
- 1:04:20Speaker 1: on some things and give us some good answers. So
- 1:04:22Speaker 1: I think a good start to the you know, Brady
- 1:04:26Speaker 1: Leonard regime here in Buffalo.
- 1:04:28Speaker 2: One hundred percent.
- 1:04:30Speaker 4: So tonight I am actually gonna finish things out by
- 1:04:33Speaker 4: going to watch the D twenty three Horizons panel for here,
- 1:04:36Speaker 4: but I have a substitute. It's my daughter's thirteenth birthday
- 1:04:39Speaker 4: and she's going to help close us out.
- 1:04:44Speaker 1: She gets in and we just start bulling.
- 1:04:51Speaker 2: Do it. Thank you for watching the cover on Post
- 1:04:55Speaker 2: Game Show with Anthony Purhasca, Calm Richie and Greg Toms
- 1:04:58Speaker 2: that we are out.
