Transcript
- 0:00Hello there. It's most things Kenobi, This is
- 0:04the podcast you're looking for. Hi everyone, Welcome to another
- 0:20episode of Most Things Kenobi, a podcast about Obi Wan Kenobi and
- 0:23all things Star Wars. I'm your host, Leanne, and I'm
- 0:28your host, Lauren. This week.
- 0:31Oh, why did we do this sooner? It's all about Mark Hamill.
- 0:37Yay. And I'm I'm like while going
- 0:40through like his bio, I feel like we should have done it
- 0:43sooner because now there's even more.
- 0:46Right. The man does not stop, and we're
- 0:49glad for it. I mean, he's our hero.
- 0:52That's how we know him. That's how we found him.
- 0:56That's how I found him. Me too.
- 0:59I I of course like most people. My first introduction to Mark
- 1:03Hamill was Star Wars, of course. But he's so much more than that.
- 1:07He really isn't he. You you have the Batman and
- 1:09Joker connection 'cause you're you're into all that.
- 1:13So yeah, I have. I have facts.
- 1:17Oh, I'm here for it. Lauren knows way more about the
- 1:21gift that the universe has by the name of Mark Hamill.
- 1:25So she's going to do more talking than me on this, on this
- 1:30subject. But I mean, I know, I know,
- 1:32Mark. What?
- 1:34Like, pretty much what everyone knows and maybe a few factoids,
- 1:37but you you're bringing the fact facts.
- 1:42Well, I went down a rabbit hole. You remember when I got divorced
- 1:45and I was living at my parents' house and I was just spending
- 1:47every night watching like, ancient Mark Hamill stuff on
- 1:51YouTube? Oh my God.
- 1:53And you would send me screenshots that were very, very
- 1:55raunchy. And I really liked all of that.
- 1:58There's some shower scene. Yes, I know.
- 2:01I just thought of that movie. It's a perfect Halloween movie
- 2:04and I completely forgot until Halloween was over.
- 2:06Black Magic Woman. Oh, that's the name of the
- 2:10movie. I I only know that scene and the
- 2:12gift that you sent me because I was losing my mind.
- 2:16I'm like, this is not Luke Skywalker.
- 2:18I was like, this is very surprising, Leanne.
- 2:22It was something, I mean, I hate to, I hate to like say that it
- 2:27feels weird because Luke's like all of our our.
- 2:30A brother, he's like a brother and he's like the the all
- 2:32American boy. It's so like, I think he tries
- 2:35really hard to break that stereotype of.
- 2:37Course, but that that GIF is is exactly the way to do it.
- 2:43Girl, That movie. Oh, the whole movie.
- 2:45See, I haven't watched the whole movie.
- 2:47Whole movie. Yeah, there's witches.
- 2:50He's cursed. He spends the whole movie cursed
- 2:54and like it's crazy. First of all, my friends are
- 2:59doing a disservice. I know they're out there
- 3:01listening. My Halloween friends who haven't
- 3:04told me about this. Or maybe they haven't.
- 3:06I completely missed the point, but where are my Halloween boys
- 3:11to tell me about this movie? I guess I got added to the list.
- 3:16I forgot about it too, so it's, you know, it's obscure.
- 3:23But Mark is not. He's he's a little obscure, but
- 3:25he's. He's just a gem.
- 3:29He is just like if you go back into his pre Star Wars stuff,
- 3:34you can see what a good actor he is, right?
- 3:38And then you get into Star Wars and he went into the George
- 3:42Lucas school of acting. I was just going to say it's the
- 3:45George Lucas effect. It takes a hold of everyone.
- 3:50Yes. And like he, I even feel like he
- 3:52really elevated some of that dialogue, because how do you
- 3:55make that bullshit sound natural?
- 3:58And especially in A New Hope, I really feel like he has a very
- 4:01natural delivery and it sounds like a normal person talking.
- 4:06Yeah, Mark Hamill auditioned officially like he, I think even
- 4:09his roommate was auditioning or something like that.
- 4:11Roommate too, it was, yeah. Yeah, 'cause he was on General
- 4:15Hospital. Yes, he was on General Hospital.
- 4:18He was. He was also on well.
- 4:21He had appearances on many shows, yes.
- 4:25I find this interesting because if you look at other actors and
- 4:28actresses, they always have like roles on things like Law and
- 4:32Order or the OR ER. Remember the show?
- 4:35ER, yes, even Ewan McGregor was on ER.
- 4:39Yeah, like everyone has had like a guest appearance on these long
- 4:44winded television shows. Yes.
- 4:47But then they all become something.
- 4:49I can think of a handful of actors and actresses that have
- 4:52shown up on shows like those and and then became something, you
- 4:56know, absolutely he he so like pre Star Wars he was on.
- 5:03He had a regular part on General Hospital.
- 5:06He was on The Cosby Show, The Partridge Family, Owen Marshall,
- 5:10counselor at Law, three times. I was thinking of the Partridge
- 5:15family. That's what I was trying to
- 5:16think of the name. Couldn't think of it.
- 5:18And he's, he's adorable in it. He really is so cute.
- 5:22He is. And like even The Cosby Show is,
- 5:25he's adorable. Like it's ridiculous.
- 5:28And he's probably like 22, but he looks like he's 15.
- 5:33Yeah, yeah, he has that quintessential, like, youth
- 5:38undertone. Yes, like.
- 5:40Even now, his eyes sparkle. With like a youth Glee.
- 5:43You know, I love people that hold on to that.
- 5:46I know he's really goofy and I like that.
- 5:49I think that's what keeps your spirit young.
- 5:52He was also in the streets of San Francisco, which is where
- 5:54Michael Douglas got his start. So damned.
- 5:57I didn't know that. Yeah, and I definitely will
- 6:00confess to watching Sarah T Portrait of a Teenage Alcoholic.
- 6:06So funny. It's not supposed to be funny,
- 6:09but it's so serious. It's hilarious.
- 6:12What year did that come out? Like when?
- 6:14That's a good question. Before 1975 S like between 70
- 6:21and 75 somewhere. That makes it even more amazing.
- 6:25Oh my God, Leanne, it is quite a movie.
- 6:28And he was on this, I think it was like made for TV movie
- 6:33called Delancey St. The Crisis Within.
- 6:36And it's about like, I love your that's the.
- 6:41Subtitle of my own biography. Oh my God.
- 6:48Well, he plays like a disturbed teenager in it.
- 6:51And he's really good. That's what, like, he's really
- 6:54believable. He doesn't have gimmicks because
- 6:57he's very, I think, sincere and vulnerable and that's what makes
- 7:03him like a very good actor. And I think that's coming back
- 7:07to him now when you see him in movies.
- 7:11Now he's I think he's kind of like just he's not insecure.
- 7:17He knows what he's about, he knows what he likes and he
- 7:20doesn't have that like pressure of being Luke Skywalker like he
- 7:25is that he's kind of, I think had to come to terms with it at
- 7:28this point. And so you see him kind of
- 7:31settling into roles in a way that's really genuine, like even
- 7:38the what was the second one? It's the second prequel or
- 7:44sequel. I can't remember the.
- 7:45Name of it? The Last Jedi.
- 7:48Yeah, I've only watched it twice.
- 7:52So I can't remember subtitle The Crisis Within.
- 8:01I mean, carry on. What were you saying?
- 8:04Just like his performance in it is really beautiful.
- 8:07It's less affected, you know, like, and I love him in Return
- 8:12of the Jedi, but you can tell by the time he's doing Return of
- 8:16the Jedi, the dialogue is even more difficult to perform
- 8:20sincerely because it's even more ridiculous than it was in A New
- 8:24Hope. So yeah, God bless him, Yes.
- 8:30Yeah. But we love him for it.
- 8:33We love him for persevering through a lot of difficult
- 8:37things. Yeah, which?
- 8:40Includes George Lucas's writing often times.
- 8:45Look, we love him, but it is what it is.
- 8:49Yeah, I mean, he got he, I I feel like he was the best choice
- 8:54for Luke Skywalker. I mean, like, he is Luke
- 8:56Skywalker, yeah, but it also really hurt his career.
- 9:01It hurt everyone's career, probably the least of all
- 9:03Harrison Ford. But like, everyone was the Star
- 9:08Wars people. After that, that's all anyone
- 9:10ever saw. But is there a way that they
- 9:11could have avoided it? I don't know.
- 9:14I don't think so. I mean, they were like on par
- 9:16with The Beatles, where people would like, yeah, like show up
- 9:20at the airport to see their plane arriving.
- 9:23You know, It was crazy. Probably not as intense as The
- 9:27Beatles, but still, like close. Listen, if Carrie Fisher was
- 9:30still alive, I would. I would hang out in the vicinity
- 9:34if I was in the vicinity. If you know what I mean.
- 9:37Yeah, we would flock. I wouldn't.
- 9:40See, I have this thing with celebrities.
- 9:43I have this thing with celebrities, but like if I see
- 9:46one, I don't want to be that person.
- 9:49I want to act cool and maybe not even approach them at all, I
- 9:54know. I have.
- 9:55I have spoken to two celebrities and that's like it, you know,
- 10:00And I I acted pretty cool. I I like to think that I did the
- 10:03correct thing. Yeah.
- 10:05Well, they're people too. Both were haphazard.
- 10:09They were in places I was that were completely unexpected,
- 10:14yeah. You know, was that one of them,
- 10:16the guy from Lost? Yes.
- 10:18And it was after the first season.
- 10:20So like the good season it was. For those of you that are lost
- 10:23fans, it was Sawyer, the character, Sawyer, Josh Holloway
- 10:26and he was in Alaska when I was working there in this little
- 10:33town. Did you ran into him at a bar?
- 10:35No, he was at he was at an outdoor race, like a trail run
- 10:40race that they hold in Seward, AK every year.
- 10:44Called the Mount Marathon Race and it's every 4th of July and
- 10:49my roommate and I were there and there he is standing there
- 10:53watching the race and I'm like, is that the guy from Wass?
- 11:00So I had to walk up to him like, hey, funny seeing you here in
- 11:05Alaska. What are you doing?
- 11:06And he's like, I'm on my honeymoon.
- 11:08What are you doing here? I said I'm in my internship.
- 11:13He was really cool about it. He was chill.
- 11:15It took me at least two hours to walk up to him though.
- 11:19Well, that, yeah, I I would need to be drunk, I think.
- 11:22Do you think you could keep your cool with Mark Hamill though?
- 11:25Yes, I could because he's so normal.
- 11:28I feel like he's so relatable and so normal and so goofy that
- 11:32I feel like it would be. I feel, I don't feel like he
- 11:36thinks he's above anyone, yeah. If I saw him at a con or I saw
- 11:41him at like a signing or some kind of fan event, I feel like
- 11:45he wants he would. He wouldn't be completely off
- 11:49putting by by anyone. I feel like he's appreciative of
- 11:53that. Maybe not like swarming over
- 11:55him, but he's reached a point in his life, in his career, where I
- 11:59think he's chill with it. And if I'm wrong I would never
- 12:04go up to him. But that's my impression.
- 12:07I think I could keep my cool. I think he's, he's really
- 12:11gracious. People swarm him.
- 12:14There's footage of him at Carrie Fisher's star Hollywood star.
- 12:19He's getting back in his car and he's still signing autographs
- 12:22even through the car window and someone hit him in the face and
- 12:27he was like, that's it, we're done.
- 12:30And and of course, a fan. It was like the paparazzi and a
- 12:33fan was like like push them another way.
- 12:36They're like how dare you hit? Mark Hamill in the face, That's
- 12:40how I would be. But like, for comparison's sake,
- 12:44Harrison Ford, I would not go near Oh my God, you know, he
- 12:48would hate being approached. Right.
- 12:50So, like, that's why I think it would be cool with Mark Hamill.
- 12:54But like, I couldn't. I couldn't even approach what's
- 12:57his name, Matt Lanter. At Comic Con.
- 12:59He was 2 feet from us. But he was pushing a baby
- 13:03carriage. He was pushing a stroller.
- 13:05Totally different scene. Yeah, yeah.
- 13:08I know when to act. It's just not on the show.
- 13:12I don't. I'm never cool.
- 13:14I mean, even seeing Vance Mickelson for far away, he's
- 13:17always like, Oh my God, I was like having a meltdown.
- 13:20So what if my favorite? Photos.
- 13:22Ever. I made Andy Serkis laugh.
- 13:23OK, I can do this. I can do this kind of stuff at
- 13:29times. I have that photo right over
- 13:33here. I'm collecting a nice wall of
- 13:35autographed photos from people. Yeah, you have a nice collection
- 13:38going. Now, just to get an autograph
- 13:43from the man himself, not Hamill himself, but Dave Filoni.
- 13:50Dave Filoni, I was going to say. Never going to happen.
- 13:53Yeah, well I would love that, but I mean, he's even further
- 13:55out of out of Reach than anyway. What are we talking about, Mark
- 13:58Hamill? Tangent achieved.
- 14:02Tangent #1 achieved full sight. Tangent.
- 14:07We went screeching off the road with that.
- 14:10One, that's why I like these episodes where we we deep dive
- 14:13into individuals because you never know where it's going to
- 14:15go in relation to these people. Yeah, seriously.
- 14:20I mean, well, OK, so we all know Star Wars, The New Hope.
- 14:25And it was like a huge success and people revered it right
- 14:32away. And then Mark got in a car
- 14:34accident, I know, and like, broke his face.
- 14:38It was bad. Like it broke his nose and his
- 14:41cheek bone and his teeth. He had to have a lot of
- 14:44reconstructive surgery that was super painful.
- 14:46Super painful. I Yeah.
- 14:50Hello. The story I heard was pretty
- 14:53funny. What he's he told it.
- 14:56He was saying that he's heard all kinds of stories, that he
- 15:01was like dragging his bloody body along the side of the
- 15:03highway and all this crazy shit. And he's like, he's like, I
- 15:08broke my nose, basically. He did like break his teeth,
- 15:10dude. They had to like rebuild part of
- 15:11his nose with his ear and all this crazy shit.
- 15:14But he said he was, I think he had a, a convertible and he was
- 15:19driving on the highway in LA, was playing.
- 15:23I think it's the 1812 Overture. It's the yes, yes.
- 15:30Everyone was singing along and realized he was going to miss
- 15:33his exit and like went out and crashed his car.
- 15:36Lot lost control of his car that way.
- 15:38I was just like the fact that he's singing that song.
- 15:42Yeah. So, Mark, it's.
- 15:46Wonderful. Really.
- 15:49Oh my God. But they said that.
- 15:52I mean, that's why he met his wife.
- 15:54What was that? I said the whole thing is not
- 15:56wonderful. I didn't mean it to sound like
- 15:57that's wonderful. No, car wrecks are not
- 16:01wonderful. But the 1812 overture is so.
- 16:06But yeah, he met his wife. Yeah, when he was getting his.
- 16:10She worked at the dental office where he was getting like his
- 16:12teeth. Fixed.
- 16:13And I love them. I know they've been married like
- 16:1740 plus years. And she has a very interesting
- 16:21name, Mary Lou. That's it.
- 16:25Yeah, I love that name. Yeah.
- 16:27And this. It was like an A&E Biography
- 16:31documentary that I watched. They said that, like, she really
- 16:33helped him through his depression, 'cause he thought
- 16:36his career was over. His face looked completely
- 16:39different, even though he, like, healed.
- 16:41Yeah, that's a that's a really tough, I mean.
- 16:45Car wrecks are one thing, but then to have facial
- 16:48reconstruction, basically teeth. That sucks.
- 16:53That hurt. That has to hurt anything with
- 16:55T-shirts. God, I really do think he was,
- 16:59like, really beautiful. He was.
- 17:02He had like that, perfect. Angular face and that nose,
- 17:06yeah. Not that he's not a beautiful
- 17:09human now. Yeah, no, he is.
- 17:12I think that led to something kind of interesting though,
- 17:16because after that, in Empire Strikes Back and after he has
- 17:21this new look, which is really, I still think it's very
- 17:24handsome. I think he was really handsome.
- 17:26But I've heard artists and Lucasfilm working on AI describe
- 17:32his face as very difficult to reproduce because he looks
- 17:37different depending on the angle or the lighting.
- 17:41He looks like a different person, so artists say he's
- 17:45really hard to draw and AI has a lot of trouble, like figuring
- 17:51out what he would look like because he looks different all
- 17:53the time, which I think is so interesting.
- 17:56He's safe from the AI generated images you'll never have to
- 18:00worry about, sort of. I mean, he's clearly already
- 18:03been AI generated twice now, I guess.
- 18:06But yes, but even that they're having trouble making locking
- 18:09down one version, you know they can't even get his voice right,
- 18:13which is so bizarre to me. Is is it our like specific
- 18:20critiques or is he just that difficult to reproduce?
- 18:27I mean, he's unique. Like you said, his face is now
- 18:30wholly unique. And still, yeah, he has a great
- 18:34smile like you said he does. I I.
- 18:37Because it moves to his eyes. Yeah, it's genuine, yeah, yeah.
- 18:45He's clear that he gets enthusiastic about stuff and is
- 18:48just as excited as fans, you know?
- 18:51He's a fantastic voice actor. Yeah, that's the thing that's, I
- 18:56think really cool about him because he's done a ton of stuff
- 19:01like he did some of his more pop, not unpopular, but like
- 19:06more well known movies are like Corvette.
- 19:09Some are the big red one, which is actually, he is really good
- 19:13in that even though I haven't seen it.
- 19:15Lee Marvin exhausts me. I hate those like old war
- 19:17movies, but he's really great in it and it's a totally different
- 19:21kind of role. And like Slipstream, he's really
- 19:25good in that. But that is a fucking bizarre
- 19:27movie. It's really bizarre.
- 19:30Also, never seen it. Listen.
- 19:32I am. I am an I'll watched.
- 19:35Is that the right word? I am a There are.
- 19:39Let me put it this way. There are just so many things I
- 19:41have not seen. I know, go ahead, cancel me.
- 19:43But I just haven't seen all these this stuff is.
- 19:47It's really obscure stuff. Like it's actually hard to get
- 19:50your hands on it. Like, I think I've watched a lot
- 19:54of this on YouTube because you can't trick it down anywhere
- 19:56else. Midnight ride.
- 19:58He plays like a murderer. Earth Angel, Leanne, that's the
- 20:01one. Where he is like a nerd in the
- 20:0450s and like, falls in love with the prom queen and she dies and
- 20:11comes back as a ghost. That's the weirdest fucking
- 20:15movie ever. I'm watching this movie and I'm
- 20:18like, why are all these teenagers 40 years old?
- 20:22And then I realized it's 'cause it was like.
- 20:24Then the the movie comes to present day and then they're
- 20:27like their actual ages, just like it's really strange.
- 20:31Isn't that the premise of Casper?
- 20:38Isn't it? The kid dies and comes back as a
- 20:41ghost. Pretty much.
- 20:45Pretty much. OK, just checking role reverse.
- 20:49OK, I didn't say these were good movies and I just said the day.
- 20:55I'm not implying anything here, just trying to catalog what ones
- 21:00I need to to watch. I think I'll skip that one.
- 21:03Well, but like more recently he's done the What We Do in the
- 21:07Shadows TV show, which the movie is.
- 21:09I've seen that and it's fucking hilarious.
- 21:11It was Jim the Vampire, which I just love.
- 21:15Stupid and pedestrian. Jim the Vampire.
- 21:21Jim I'm like laughing so hard. I have tears in my eyes.
- 21:27That sounds great, yeah. And he just did that movie The
- 21:31Machine, which is like irreverent humor.
- 21:35And then Fall of the House of Usher just came out like weeks
- 21:39ago. So I think it's great that he's
- 21:41acting in person again because forever he was just doing voice
- 21:45over. Yeah, which is awesome and
- 21:49amazing. And he has the longest IMDb I've
- 21:52ever seen. That's awesome, though.
- 21:55It's insane. It's crazy to see how many
- 21:59smaller things, in addition to the massive entities that these
- 22:05actors and actresses have been a part of.
- 22:07I mean, especially Mark, just because he slides in there in
- 22:12ways that you don't know, like we talked about.
- 22:14What's his name in, in the last episodes of Clone Wars?
- 22:19We just talked about things with the Yoda, where he's talking to
- 22:22the wills and what's the what's the I am useless.
- 22:25What's the name of the guy? The Sith?
- 22:28He comes back. He's he's Darth Bane.
- 22:30Thank you. Oh my God.
- 22:32Just strike me. Down he comes.
- 22:35He's Darth Bane. I don't have a Star Wars
- 22:38podcast. Who am I?
- 22:40Darth Bane's voice. In that episode, it's just like
- 22:45you would never know, like you said you couldn't understand a
- 22:47word, he said. But like, it's cool that Mark
- 22:49Hamill has. It's also like James Arnold
- 22:51Taylor. He's in all these different,
- 22:53like, games, Yeah, yeah. PlayStation, Xbox, whatever the
- 22:59brand is, he's in the games, his voices and stuff.
- 23:01I love it. I love how you can't tell
- 23:03sometimes. Sometimes, like with Mark
- 23:05Hamill, if I know he's in it, I can almost always pick out who
- 23:08he is because now I know what he sounds like.
- 23:11But like the first time, I have no idea.
- 23:13I grew up my entire childhood. I had no idea he was the Joker
- 23:18and I loved. Batman, you had no idea.
- 23:22I didn't until it was like 2012, I think is what I learned, that
- 23:27Mark Hamill was the Joker that I grew up with.
- 23:30Oh my God. Well, I mean, as a kid, why
- 23:32would you know? Nobody cares about that.
- 23:34No idea. Yeah, my brain exploded.
- 23:37I learned as an adult, and I'm just like, what the fuck?
- 23:41It's the best. It's the best.
- 23:43I fucking love it. I love it.
- 23:45It's so good. There are a lot of good jokers,
- 23:47but Mark Hamill's my favorite. Oh, and you didn't even know it.
- 23:50And it's so you're unbiased. It's an unbiased opinion.
- 23:54Exactly. It was sincere childhood love of
- 23:58that character, and he was terrifying also.
- 24:01Would you say it's your favorite non Star Wars Mark Hamill role?
- 24:06That's a good question. Yeah probably just cause it's
- 24:11it's so I think that it's yes, because he's played the whole
- 24:16spectrum of the Joker, so he's done, which is funny because
- 24:19it's the antithesis of Luke Skywalker.
- 24:21But then he's even played the Joker on like opposite ends of
- 24:25the spectrum. So he is Batman, The animated
- 24:27Series, where it's kind of funny.
- 24:29Like it's it's really humorous. There are moments that are kind
- 24:33of disturbing, but you know, it's for kids.
- 24:35But then he's done the Arkham video games, which is really,
- 24:41really dark and really scary. Yeah, like, I haven't played the
- 24:45games, but I kind of this is the kind of nerd I am, dude, I watch
- 24:51the, like, I don't know what those are called.
- 24:54They're like cutscenes or whatever in between the yeah,
- 24:57I'll watch all of that and I've never played the game, but I
- 25:00just want to see like, 'cause I like Batman that much.
- 25:03I need to go see it now too, 'cause I probably will never
- 25:06play the game, but I just want to hear it.
- 25:09I want to hear it. It's really good and it's really
- 25:13disturbing. I love disturbing.
- 25:16He's very good at it. Like he I think that's why I
- 25:19love Mark Hamill so much, because I believe him as
- 25:22Skywalker the hero, and I believe him as this, like he's
- 25:28just not afraid to get really outside of his comfort zone.
- 25:35And he's even said that about animation is like, he doesn't.
- 25:38You don't have to show up looking like anything.
- 25:40You can play characters you would never be cast in
- 25:44otherwise, because you don't look like that character you
- 25:46know. Well, apparently I'm reading
- 25:50here that he was also in the Spider Man animated series.
- 25:54Yeah, as the Joker. Well, and there's other
- 25:56characters, because he doesn't always just play.
- 25:58Like, even in Batman he's played a couple of characters, but.
- 26:03He's in Marvel roles in animated series.
- 26:07I I'm, I'm like just going through his animated, animated
- 26:10stuff. I'm just like whoa, yeah, like
- 26:13his franchises are crazy that he's done voice.
- 26:17Obviously The Simpsons when he played himself, which was like
- 26:20and again it was like 2 years ago that I learned in that
- 26:26episode. It's my favorite Simpsons
- 26:28episode, not even because of Mark Hamill, because it's also a
- 26:30parody of The Bodyguard, which I don't know if you've ever seen.
- 26:33That movie, but unfortunately I have seen that one.
- 26:37It's a guilty pleasure for me. I like, love, hate that movie.
- 26:40And the Homer goes to bodyguard training school and he has like
- 26:45a drill Sergeant that's crazy who sings the Whitney Houston
- 26:48song. That's Mark Hamill.
- 26:50He. Sings Oh my God, So The
- 26:55Simpsons, Troll Hunter, Chucky. He's the new Chucky.
- 27:00Scooby-doo, Transformers, Obviously.
- 27:02Star Wars, Adventure Time, Avatar, The Last Airbender,
- 27:06Futurama, Robot, Chicken, Samurai Jack, Johnny Bravo, Hey
- 27:10Arnold, and then Masters of the Universe is now Skeletors.
- 27:13It's just like. Oh my God.
- 27:15Franchise. You can mention he's in it,
- 27:18basically. I'm just trying to see if I
- 27:21recognize anything that I've seen.
- 27:27Oh my Lord, no. Yeah, so I do want to just talk
- 27:32about the Joker really quick, because he was not originally
- 27:36cast as the Joker. He was not.
- 27:40No, Tim Curry was Tim. Curry oh oh.
- 27:47Which I then found really interesting because Mark Hamill
- 27:51also did Broadway for a while after Star Wars and was in the
- 27:56elephant band, which was also, after Mark was done, played by
- 27:59David Bowie, which is fucking. That's insane.
- 28:03But then he was also in Amadeus, which was originally cast with
- 28:08Tim Curry, and Mark Hamill replaced him in Amadeus on
- 28:13stage. Let me just say this.
- 28:18I fucking love Tim Curry. I do too.
- 28:23They could not be more opposite, right?
- 28:27How does this happen? I don't know.
- 28:30I don't it's they to me, like it's really bizarre because they
- 28:35they just aren't the same kind of actor.
- 28:38But maybe, maybe they are in some way.
- 28:40I don't know, because I cannot see Tim Curry as Mozart in
- 28:46Amadeus. I can see Mark Hamill because
- 28:48Mark Hamill looks and sounds just like Tom Holtz, who did it
- 28:52in the movie and he wanted to be in the movie, but the director
- 28:57was like, I'm not having Luke Skywalker in my movie.
- 28:59Oh. My, the shade.
- 29:02I know. I mean, I.
- 29:03Kind of get it? I kind of get it, 'cause like,
- 29:06yeah, you have an image of what you want and Skywalker isn't it.
- 29:10I get it. But like the shade I know, but
- 29:14so like this weird parallel of then Tim Curry was cast as the
- 29:17Joker, which is also weird because he's also then Emperor
- 29:22Palpatine in Clone Wars. After in Abercrombie dies,
- 29:25there's this weird like 6 degrees of separation going on.
- 29:30I would never guess that if you told me to do 6 degrees from Tim
- 29:35Curry to to fucking Mark Hamill, I'd be like, Nah, I'm out, but I
- 29:40guess it's the thing. So I guess he did the first
- 29:44couple episodes of Batman the Animated Series and then they
- 29:47replaced him and I don't know why.
- 29:49Maybe he had another scheduling conflict or whatever.
- 29:52I don't know if he got fired or not, but then so when Mark came
- 29:55in, he had a voice match animation that existed already.
- 29:59So the first couple times he's on the show, he's not even doing
- 30:02like his full version. He's just trying to like match
- 30:06what was there already, which is nuts.
- 30:10If you see those episodes, it's crazy.
- 30:13Yeah, it's really. And then he like, then he gets
- 30:17his full like exposure and then they start animating to the
- 30:22shapes that he makes while he's doing the voices because they
- 30:26would film. Him.
- 30:27Just, like, interesting, yeah. And they said he would get into
- 30:30these postures that were, like, so fucking bizarre that then
- 30:34they'd make make the Joker do that too.
- 30:37Because how else would you make that sound come out of your body
- 30:40otherwise? True.
- 30:41That's why I find it so incredible that voice actors
- 30:45aren't. They don't have those sticky
- 30:46things all over them all the time, those little dots, you
- 30:49know, I know the technology is, yeah, it's it's a very, I
- 30:55understand it's newer technology, but like.
- 30:58It's amazing what they can do to match that.
- 31:01But to picture Mark Hamill, To picture Tim Curry?
- 31:06It's kind of a mindfuck, but I love it.
- 31:11Well, he also said that his he has like 100 different crazy
- 31:16maniacal laughs. But he said he developed by
- 31:20doing Amadeus, which I don't know if you've ever seen that,
- 31:22but like Mozart was famous for having like kind of an insane
- 31:26laugh. Makes sense.
- 31:27And so he would like kind of come up with these on stage.
- 31:30And then they worked perfectly for the Joker when he got cast
- 31:33as the Joker, which I just love that there's this weird
- 31:37connection between the Joker and Mozart.
- 31:40He just can't. Help it Up until this episode, I
- 31:43never knew, which is why I was so excited to talk about this.
- 31:45Because you're so passionate about all of this.
- 31:48And I'm sorry, I'll calm down. No, no, that wasn't it.
- 31:51No, stay. That wasn't an indication for
- 31:54you to tone it down. Stay up.
- 31:57I'm just saying I'm learning things from you as we go.
- 32:00I can't. I look, I can't watch all these.
- 32:04So I need you. It's.
- 32:07It's so much and even though hey watched a lot of it, I can't
- 32:11watch all of it. It's just I did.
- 32:13I even made a list. I was like trying to get through
- 32:15all of Mark Hamill's stuff because I was curious and I got
- 32:18through a lot of his movies. But like that voice acting is.
- 32:21It's impossible. It's insane.
- 32:24So he's been active. So he was born in 1951, but he's
- 32:29been actively working in some shape or form since 1970, yeah?
- 32:35And it's 2023. That's incredible.
- 32:39And he's done everything movies, TV, stage, voiceover.
- 32:44He even produced his own comic book.
- 32:47Yes, and he did stop motion claymation movie also like that.
- 32:53He directed like it's crazy. What?
- 32:58What was that? Do you know, I can't remember
- 33:00what it's called? It's.
- 33:01It was about like it was as though the monsters that are
- 33:06cast in like monster movies or horror movies are actually
- 33:10actors, and they're just like they can't find work.
- 33:13Except it's the purple dragon, you know, and the.
- 33:17Wall so it was. That was like the idea behind
- 33:21it, but I think it's like claymation, so it's.
- 33:22Kind of. I love Claymation.
- 33:24Yeah, it looked. It is so honestly, it's so Mark
- 33:28Hamill because it's like, you know, a comic book meets, yeah,
- 33:32fashion horror movie, 'cause that was so his thing back in
- 33:36the 50s and everything. So, you know, fun fact, maybe
- 33:39it's not so fun, but I took a theater class in college and it
- 33:43was history of the different types of media and we did
- 33:47claymation and stop stop motion or whatever, the whole thing.
- 33:51And I fell in love with it. It's awesome.
- 33:55I never realized the amount of work.
- 33:59Anyway, it's right. It's incredible.
- 34:02It made me appreciate Rudolph the red nosed reindeer from what
- 34:06is that? The 60s, fifties, 60s.
- 34:09It was in college. I don't even know.
- 34:10It must have taken 40 years to make them.
- 34:12With Burl Ives, that's the one. I'm the iconic classic Rudolph,
- 34:17yeah. I just one of my faves, anyway.
- 34:21Made me appreciate that more than I ever realized.
- 34:25Yeah, it's it is painstaking every everything like a hair of
- 34:29the head. The eye is shifting.
- 34:31Everything has to be accounted for, yeah.
- 34:34And here we are. Mark Hamill's a part of that,
- 34:36too. Go figure.
- 34:37What is he not a part of, besides my life?
- 34:40Well, he is a part of my life. He's just not, you know,
- 34:42physically, he doesn't know who we are.
- 34:44Yeah, maybe someday. Mark want to come on the show?
- 34:48Oh, Mark, I think I would die. I might actually just die.
- 34:53Yeah, that would be the last episode.
- 34:58Then I get my Viking funeral and I'm done.
- 35:01Yes. Vader can come and slice me in
- 35:03half and throw me on a ceiling and we'll live forever in peace.
- 35:06Or or not live. We'll exist.
- 35:10We'll haunt the shit out of Yes. God, we're messed up, dude.
- 35:21Oh man. OK so the IMDb list is the
- 35:30length of the Bible. If you could pick any non Star
- 35:37Wars project from Mark Hamill, good luck.
- 35:41Just like scroll and point. What's your favorite non Star
- 35:45Wars Mark Hamill role? It can be.
- 35:47Voice over. It can be TV, movie, theater, It
- 35:52doesn't matter. Just tell us if you can.
- 35:56You can. I don't even know if I could.
- 35:58I mean I guess it's just got my favorite is Star Wars but like
- 36:01non Star Wars. God, I don't even know what it
- 36:03be. I guess the Joker.
- 36:05Well yeah. Do you do you have anything?
- 36:07Because I know you haven't watched as many other stuff.
- 36:09Just the scene in that gift that you sent me.
- 36:11It's a good choice. I actually think I might go
- 36:17track that movie down now. Yep, so join us back here next
- 36:24week. We are starting A2 part episode
- 36:26breakdown arc of. We talked about it in a previous
- 36:31episode. We said we're going to do it,
- 36:33we're finally do it, and I'm so excited.
- 36:36It's the Dooku captured Ark in Clone Wars.
- 36:39There's only two episodes in this arc, not the usual 3.
- 36:44And it's a lot. It's Hondo, it's Dooku
- 36:47irritated. It's Obi Wan being a sassy
- 36:50bastard. It's Anakin act and dumb.
- 36:53We love all of it. And we're going to do the next
- 36:57two weeks or the two episodes. And I can't freaking wait.
- 37:03Last week's episode was about spooky Clone Wars.
- 37:06Yes, little belated Halloween episode for you.
- 37:10And we asked our listeners what was their favorite or I don't
- 37:15know if you can call it favorite spooky thing cause a lot of
- 37:17people even said like this is the most disgusting thing.
- 37:23Thank. God, let's have it, MBCH, 77,
- 37:29said. Those brain worms are the
- 37:31absolutely most awful and disgusting thing in all of Clone
- 37:35Wars. I just wanted to hide from
- 37:37watching. They really are.
- 37:40And they did it. They did it so well, though it's
- 37:43so gross. I was afraid they were going
- 37:48there and then they went there and.
- 37:49They went there. I agree they are.
- 37:51They are absolutely wretched. And then our friend Carlo
- 37:55mentioned to me that I totally forgotten this, but she said it
- 37:59was really disturbing and she felt really upset that her
- 38:02daughter was in the room when this happened and she wished she
- 38:05had known ahead of time to like kind of shield her daughter.
- 38:08But the moment where Ventris kills a clone and kisses him on
- 38:12the cheek. Oh, Oh yeah, actually.
- 38:19Right. Not a kiss show.
- 38:25We need to revisit that topic as well, yeah, I think.
- 38:29I think there's plenty of stuff in in that topic that could be a
- 38:32recurring theme on the. Show holy cow.
- 38:35We'll start with that, Yeah. Well, that was something I, I, I
- 38:40kind of like always forget about that until I watch that episode.
- 38:43I think it's Arc Troopers I want to say.
- 38:46And yeah, I agree, Carla, it's that's gross.
- 38:50It's just it's it's fucking disturbing really.
- 38:54So yeah, but also classic Clone Wars, right?
