- 0:13Speaker 1: Chronicles 22.10 Dear God, through the life of Queen Ahaziah,
- 0:20Speaker 1: I will make sure that as I step into my
- 0:22Speaker 1: position of leadership, I will not be motivated by power, prestige,
- 0:28Speaker 1: or position. Instead, I will do everything within my power
- 0:34Speaker 1: to make sure that everything I do is motivated by love.
- 0:40Speaker 1: I will not seek leadership merely to gain power over
- 0:43Speaker 1: others or to revel in a smug feeling of superiority,
- 0:48Speaker 1: but will focus my motive to meet the needs and
- 0:52Speaker 1: grow the cause of your kingdom. Increase your godly character
- 0:58Speaker 1: in my life. fortify the walls of my faith so

- 1:47Speaker 2: Athaliah In our last story, Jehu was used by God
- 1:52Speaker 2: to rid Israel of evil. He killed Jezebel and all
- 1:57Speaker 2: the remnants of King Ahab. He also toppled the temples
- 2:00Speaker 2: of Baal along with all its followers. Jehu killed thousands
- 2:05Speaker 2: in the name of a truly free Israel, but the
- 2:08Speaker 2: process claimed his heart. Eventually, he succumbed to his own
- 2:13Speaker 2: inner evils and strayed away from God. Jehu would forever
- 2:18Speaker 2: be honored by God for what he did. But his
- 2:21Speaker 2: time as king was marked with suffering, and the kingdom
- 2:24Speaker 2: of Israel shrunk under his rule. Now we peer into
- 2:28Speaker 2: the life of Athaliah and get a better understanding of
- 2:31Speaker 2: how Judah and Israel descended into further dysfunction and pain,
- 2:37Speaker 2: inspired by the books of 2 Chronicles and 2 Kings.
- 2:45Speaker 3: Hello, I'm Pastor Jack Graham with today's episode of The
- 2:48Speaker 3: Bible in a Year. In our last time together, we
- 2:51Speaker 3: learned how Jehu cleansed Israel of Ahab's family and and
- 2:55Speaker 3: brought judgment upon those who carried out his evil and
- 2:59Speaker 3: idolatrous legacy. Though Jehu did great things for the Lord,
- 3:04Speaker 3: he failed to hold fast to God all the days
- 3:06Speaker 3: of his life, and as a result failed to fully
- 3:09Speaker 3: witness to God's glory throughout his lifetime. Today we look
- 3:12Speaker 3: at Athaliah, the daughter of Ahab and Jezebel, whose marriage
- 3:16Speaker 3: to Jehoram, the king of Judah, had disastrous consequences on
- 3:20Speaker 3: the southern kingdoms. once again leading Judah into idolatry and
- 3:24Speaker 3: unfaithfulness and disobedience to God. So, listen now to the
- 3:28Speaker 3: Word of God.
- 3:31Speaker 2: The kingdom of Judah was thriving under King Jehoshaphat. He
- 3:35Speaker 2: ruled with a fear of the Lord and a genuine
- 3:37Speaker 2: love for his people. Surrounding nations respected him, his people
- 3:42Speaker 2: loved him, and he had the Spirit of God resting
- 3:46Speaker 2: on his soul. For all Jehoshaphat's triumphs as king over
- 3:50Speaker 2: Judah He made one fateful mistake, a mistake that would
- 3:55Speaker 2: alter the course of Judah and Israel for several generations.
- 4:00Speaker 2: Jehoshaphat learned to broker peace with many surrounding nations, yet
- 4:05Speaker 2: there was still disdain between Judah and their sister nation Israel.
- 4:10Speaker 2: In an attempt to broker peace, Jehoshaphat betrothed his son
- 4:14Speaker 2: Jerome to the daughter of Ahab, Athaliah. Athaliah was the
- 4:20Speaker 2: daughter of Ahab and Jezebel. Ahab's corrupt mind and Jezebel's
- 4:24Speaker 2: wicked heart had seeped their way into their daughter. Athaliah
- 4:29Speaker 2: had the seductive qualities of her mother. Her silver tongue
- 4:32Speaker 2: lured Yerom into straying away from the Lord. All of
- 4:36Speaker 2: Jehoshaphat's positive influence began to melt as Athaliah spun webs
- 4:41Speaker 2: of lies around her husband's mind. Jehoshaphat eventually passed to
- 4:46Speaker 2: be with his forefathers. His life was celebrated as one
- 4:50Speaker 2: of Judah's truest kings. However, Yerom had no such legacy.
- 4:56Speaker 2: He and his wife practiced ancient pagan rituals. Their selfish
- 5:00Speaker 2: and lewd practices trickled down into the culture of Judah.
- 5:04Speaker 2: King Jehoshaphat had such a peace with God that he
- 5:07Speaker 2: was able to stand in the face of vast armies
- 5:10Speaker 2: without fear. King Yerom had no such peace. His mind
- 5:14Speaker 2: was clouded with paranoia and pride. In an attempt to
- 5:18Speaker 2: secure his legacy forever, he killed all six of his brothers.
- 5:24Speaker 2: Corruption drenched his thoughts, and Athaliah reveled in her husband's
- 5:28Speaker 2: downward spiral. Elisha, the prophet, kept a close eye on
- 5:32Speaker 2: the king of Judah. He watched as Athaliah sewed lies
- 5:36Speaker 2: into the fabric of Judah. He watched as Yoram secured
- 5:40Speaker 2: his line by murdering his brothers. Elisha knew the heart
- 5:44Speaker 2: of God. He knew that a king's heart eventually reached
- 5:48Speaker 2: the heart of his people. He sent King Duram a message, saying,
- 5:53Speaker 2: You have caused the people of Judah to fall into
- 5:55Speaker 2: false worship. You have slain your brothers, good men who
- 6:00Speaker 2: served the Lord. Because of this, you and your sons
- 6:03Speaker 2: will be blotted out from the kingdom. Slowly, Judah's prosperity
- 6:08Speaker 2: and favor shifted. With each battle, Judah tallied more and
- 6:12Speaker 2: more lost. Nations that were once at peace with Judah
- 6:16Speaker 2: began to take away more and more land. Yerom felt
- 6:20Speaker 2: his kingdom slipping away from him. To add to his woes,
- 6:24Speaker 2: Yerom was plagued with a crippling stomach illness. For two years,
- 6:29Speaker 2: he writhed in pain. Each night, he screamed for mercy. Eventually,
- 6:34Speaker 2: Yerom and all his sons perished by the same illness.
- 6:38Speaker 2: All his sons, but one. Nobody mourned for Yerom's death.
- 6:43Speaker 2: He was a corrupt man and brought nothing but sorrow
- 6:46Speaker 2: to the people of Judah. There was hope for his son, Ahaziah.
- 6:51Speaker 2: Hope that he could restore the heart of David and Jehoshaphat.
- 6:54Speaker 2: Hope that he might rise above his father's sins and
- 6:57Speaker 2: reach out to God for guidance. However, King Ahaziah was
- 7:01Speaker 2: also muddled by the doctrine of his mother. Athaliah tutored
- 7:05Speaker 2: her son in the ways of Jezebel. She weaved his
- 7:09Speaker 2: wicked heart like a tapestry. Eventually, Ahaziah went to visit
- 7:13Speaker 2: his uncle, the king of Israel, who had been wounded
- 7:16Speaker 2: on the battlefield. There he met Jehu, who sent a
- 7:19Speaker 2: sea of arrows to drown him in blood. So Athaliah
- 7:24Speaker 2: found herself a widow and childless. Her husband and her
- 7:28Speaker 2: sons were weak. Their minds and hearts were malleable and
- 7:32Speaker 2: easy to sway, but not hers. Athaliah had a will
- 7:36Speaker 2: of iron. She was the daughter of Jezebel and Ahab.
- 7:39Speaker 2: She would find a way to remain in power. Athaliah
- 7:43Speaker 2: knew that only men from the line of David were
- 7:45Speaker 2: chosen as rulers over Judah. As long as the line
- 7:49Speaker 2: of David lived, there would be a possibility to be overthrown.
- 7:53Speaker 2: So Athaliah conspired to kill all of her grandchildren. Anyone
- 7:58Speaker 2: with David's blood running through their veins would feel the
- 8:01Speaker 2: cold iron of her dagger. Athaliah conspired with a few
- 8:05Speaker 2: of her servants, not knowing that a child of God
- 8:08Speaker 2: stood in her midst. Athaliah's daughter peered into her mother's
- 8:12Speaker 2: chambers and listened. She heard of Athaliah's plan to murder
- 8:17Speaker 2: the line of David to gain power. Athaliah's daughter was
- 8:21Speaker 2: married to the high priest Jehoiada. Together they worshipped God
- 8:25Speaker 2: and served the people of Judah. She would not allow
- 8:29Speaker 2: her mother to murder her child. Before Athaliah sent her
- 8:33Speaker 2: guards to murder her grandchildren, her daughter grabbed her baby, Joash,
- 8:37Speaker 2: and hid him in the temple of God. Tears streamed
- 8:40Speaker 2: down her face as she held her son close. In
- 8:44Speaker 2: the distance, she could hear the boots of Athaliah's men,
- 8:47Speaker 2: each one of them scattered throughout the city to find
- 8:49Speaker 2: the descendants of David. All the small children were killed,
- 8:54Speaker 2: all but Joash, who was held safely in the arms
- 8:57Speaker 2: of his mother. Athaliah stood proud in front of the
- 9:00Speaker 2: people of Judah, confident she had slain all the descendants
- 9:04Speaker 2: of David. She stood proud as the new ruler of Judah.
- 9:09Speaker 2: For six years she corrupted the nation with the sins
- 9:11Speaker 2: of Jezebel. All the while, Joash was kept safe with
- 9:15Speaker 2: his father in the temple of God. For seven years
- 9:19Speaker 2: he remained there and studied the word of God. Meanwhile,
- 9:23Speaker 2: the people who still worshipped the Lord became restless for
- 9:26Speaker 2: a king. Jehoiada, the high priest, and Joash's father gathered
- 9:31Speaker 2: the trusted leaders and elders of Judah together. They all
- 9:35Speaker 2: conversed in secret about Queen Athaliah. They spoke of revolt.
- 9:39Speaker 2: They spoke of rebellion. This is when Jehoiada felt comfortable
- 9:44Speaker 2: to ask the question, What would you do if I
- 9:46Speaker 2: told you there was a descendant of King David still alive?
- 9:51Speaker 2: The people paused for a moment, then nodded in agreement.
- 9:55Speaker 2: We would make him king, of course, they shouted. Jehoiada
- 9:59Speaker 2: nodded and got up from his seat. He went into
- 10:02Speaker 2: the other room and brought in his seven-year-old son. Joash
- 10:06Speaker 2: stood shyly in front of the crowd. This is Joash,
- 10:10Speaker 2: your next king. Gasps filled the room. There in the temple,
- 10:15Speaker 2: they bowed to the Lord's preserved hope for Judah. Together,
- 10:19Speaker 2: the elders devised a plan to bring Joash in front
- 10:22Speaker 2: of the people. They rallied troops who were not loyal
- 10:25Speaker 2: to the queen and ushered Joash forward in front of
- 10:28Speaker 2: the people. His father anointed his head and placed a
- 10:32Speaker 2: crown on his head. The people erupted in praise to
- 10:35Speaker 2: God in honor of their king. The sounds of applause, music,
- 10:40Speaker 2: and laughter echoed through the city. It woke the slumbering Athaliah.
- 10:44Speaker 2: She looked out her window to see what was happening.
- 10:47Speaker 2: She beheld citizens running through the streets in praise of
- 10:50Speaker 2: their new king. Her blood began to boil with hatred.
- 10:55Speaker 2: All she had built had begun to crumble. All the
- 10:58Speaker 2: murder and lies had been for nothing. She would not
- 11:02Speaker 2: admit defeat easily. She rallied some of her guards and
- 11:06Speaker 2: stormed the temple of God. There she saw the seven-year-old
- 11:10Speaker 2: Joash sitting upon his throne. She cackled towards him, then
- 11:14Speaker 2: lifted her finger. Treason, she screamed. Her voice was broken
- 11:19Speaker 2: and without control. Her eyes revealed an inner madness. Her
- 11:23Speaker 2: hunger for power had driven her insane. Joash was just
- 11:28Speaker 2: a child and unable to truly rule on his own.
- 11:31Speaker 2: Jehoiada and the elders stood behind him. They were pillars
- 11:35Speaker 2: of strength and guidance for him. With resolute strength and God,
- 11:39Speaker 2: they stood their ground. Take her away from here, they
- 11:42Speaker 2: ordered the guards. To Athaliah's surprise, her men did nothing
- 11:47Speaker 2: to help her. As she was swept away out of
- 11:49Speaker 2: the temple, they dragged her to the horse corral and
- 11:53Speaker 2: executed her without a spectacle. Slowly, the hearts of Judah
- 11:57Speaker 2: began to heal. They tore down the idols in the
- 12:00Speaker 2: city and renewed a culture of worship.
- 12:07Speaker 3: As we open today's passage, we're reminded of the righteous
- 12:10Speaker 3: reign of Jehoshaphat, king of Judah. His heart was like David's,
- 12:15Speaker 3: and he earnestly sought to be close to the Lord
- 12:18Speaker 3: and to lead his people to do the same. His
- 12:21Speaker 3: rule was marked by success and a glorious time in
- 12:25Speaker 3: Judah's history. But in his efforts to secure peace with
- 12:29Speaker 3: the northern kingdom of Israel, Jehoshaphat had united with Ahab
- 12:33Speaker 3: through the marriage of his son Jehoram to Ahab and
- 12:35Speaker 3: Jezebel's daughter Athaliah. Athaliah was cut from the same cloth
- 12:40Speaker 3: as her evil parents. and was deeply involved in pagan
- 12:44Speaker 3: worship and idolatry. So when Jehoshaphat died and left a
- 12:48Speaker 3: flourishing kingdom for Jehoram to rule, things took an unfortunate turn.
- 12:53Speaker 3: Athaliah's influence upon Jehoram was stronger than Jehoshaphat's, and soon
- 12:59Speaker 3: the royal couple brought back the pagan rituals that poisoned Israel,
- 13:03Speaker 3: and of which Jehoshaphat had worked so hard to rid
- 13:06Speaker 3: from Judah. But as Jehoram discovered, when we turn from
- 13:10Speaker 3: God to other sources of power and peace, we will
- 13:13Speaker 3: end up with neither. Rather than peace, Jehoram was tortured
- 13:17Speaker 3: by insecurity and fear, which in the end left him
- 13:20Speaker 3: powerless to resist even the gravest of sins, like the
- 13:23Speaker 3: murder of his six brothers, whom he feared were after
- 13:26Speaker 3: his throne. Elisha, the great man of God, watched as
- 13:31Speaker 3: all of this transpired. He saw the evil that was
- 13:35Speaker 3: growing in Judah and sent word of God's judgment to Jehoram.
- 13:40Speaker 3: His sins had not gone unnoticed, and as a result,
- 13:43Speaker 3: God was going to wipe out the king and his sons.
- 13:46Speaker 3: Just as the prophet had said, Jehoram and his sons
- 13:49Speaker 3: all died. The last of which was Ahaziah, the king
- 13:54Speaker 3: who we learned died when Jehu came to power. Ahaziah
- 13:57Speaker 3: and Israel's king Joram both died at the hand of Jehu.
- 14:02Speaker 3: Athaliah was left without a husband or any children. But
- 14:06Speaker 3: rather than being fearful for her future or turn to
- 14:08Speaker 3: God in repentance of her own sins, Athaliah doubled down.
- 14:13Speaker 3: She saw the threat to her power, David's line, and
- 14:16Speaker 3: proposed to destroy every descendant of King David. This included
- 14:21Speaker 3: her own grandchildren. We could view this as simply the
- 14:25Speaker 3: evil plot of a woman hungry for power and unwilling
- 14:28Speaker 3: to repent. But we know that there was something much
- 14:31Speaker 3: deeper going on here. There was a spiritual battle taking place,
- 14:36Speaker 3: a cosmic war. Our greatest enemy, the devil, knows God's
- 14:39Speaker 3: plan to bring the Savior, the Lord Jesus, as Messiah
- 14:43Speaker 3: through David's line. Seen in that light, Athaliah's plot to
- 14:48Speaker 3: wipe out David's lineage was the work of Satan, who
- 14:51Speaker 3: seeks to kill, steal, and destroy. But God's plans are
- 14:56Speaker 3: impossible to stop. And even as Athaliah plotted death, one
- 15:00Speaker 3: of God's servants was in her midst. And in 2
- 15:03Speaker 3: Kings 11-2, here's what we find. But Jehoshibah, the daughter
- 15:08Speaker 3: of King Joram, the sister of Ahaziah, took Johash, the
- 15:11Speaker 3: son of Ahaziah, and stole him away from among the
- 15:15Speaker 3: king's sons who were about to be put to death.
- 15:17Speaker 3: And she put him and his nurse in a bedroom.
- 15:20Speaker 3: Thus they hid him from Athaliah so that he was
- 15:23Speaker 3: not put to death. Queen Athaliah's reign of terror lasted
- 15:27Speaker 3: six years, and in the seventh year, Jehoshibah revealed that
- 15:31Speaker 3: her son Joash was alive, as is the line of David.
- 15:35Speaker 3: His father Jehodah, the priest, anointed the child as king,
- 15:39Speaker 3: and the seven-year-old child was placed under strong protection. The
- 15:43Speaker 3: people were quick to welcome a new king, as Queen
- 15:47Speaker 3: Athaliah had brought them nothing but pain and suffering. And
- 15:51Speaker 3: when she tried to seize the child to kill him,
- 15:53Speaker 3: her guards refused to help her. Instead, she was taken
- 15:57Speaker 3: to a stable and executed. Though the plans of Satan
- 16:00Speaker 3: may seem to prevail for a time, God will always
- 16:04Speaker 3: accomplish his will and his purpose. And so this child,
- 16:08Speaker 3: the anointed one, Joash, carried on the line of David
- 16:13Speaker 3: and ushered in an era of peace and obedience to God.
- 16:18Speaker 3: As a result of Jehoshibah's faithfulness to God, The child
- 16:22Speaker 3: was preserved and God's plan carried on. And one day
- 16:26Speaker 3: the Messiah would indeed come through the line of David.
- 16:30Speaker 3: Lord God, we remember today that no plot against you,
- 16:34Speaker 3: no plan against your work and your will will ever prosper.
- 16:39Speaker 3: We're reminded of this today through the life of Joash
- 16:42Speaker 3: and the bravery, the courage of his mother to preserve him.
- 16:46Speaker 3: Thank you for doing your will and accomplish your purposes
- 16:49Speaker 3: in our lives. We know that we have a destiny
- 16:51Speaker 3: with you, and our destiny is found in our relationship
- 16:55Speaker 3: through our Lord Jesus Christ with you, our God and Father. Amen.
