Transcript
- 0:00SPEAKER_00: And I haven't told this.
- 0:01SPEAKER_00: I've I've started I've told it a little bit, but the coolest story was the future Dan is now looking back, right?
- 0:06SPEAKER_00: Had I recorded that with Clooney, had he sang it, right?
- 0:10SPEAKER_00: I would have made my$320 for the session fee, and I would have been so proud, I would have told everybody, hey, look, I bought this whatever iPod with money I made Robert Clover with George Clooney.
- 0:21SPEAKER_00: Damn it, what do you think of that, right?
- 0:24SPEAKER_00: But because he said, I'll act, you sing, huh.
- 0:29SPEAKER_00: I got it's funny because they said just they said we need I wasn't a guitar player on that.
- 0:37SPEAKER_00: I was singing, someone else was playing guitar, and we kept running it and running it.
- 0:41SPEAKER_00: And they said it's it's not right.
- 0:44SPEAKER_00: The guitarist, they said, you've just sold your soul to the devil for you're devil possessed, your fingers are flying, you're trying, you just stole a chicken, man.
- 0:51SPEAKER_00: You're trying to hit all of me.
- 0:54SPEAKER_00: You're you're devil possessed, your fingers are flying.
- 0:56SPEAKER_00: And it's well, I just I took the guitar when I tuned it down, it was out of tune, and I just started going.
- 1:04SPEAKER_00: And they were like, that's it! Can you do that?
- 1:06SPEAKER_00: Can you play and sing at the same time?
- 1:09SPEAKER_00: First time I had to ever ask myself that question.
- 1:11SPEAKER_00: I was like, I think so.
- 1:13SPEAKER_00: I mean, I was headed up to that point, but um that was that was the lick that got me the gig.
- 1:20SPEAKER_00: It was the lick, no shit.
- 1:25SPEAKER_00: But without all the trash, it's it's the same rinse and repeat.
- 1:34SPEAKER_02: So you just came up with that for that song for the movie.
- 1:40SPEAKER_02: So we so someone wrote it, you and then you got to play it?
- 1:44SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 1:45SPEAKER_02: And it wasn't working, so you pick up the guitar and you're like or whatever the title is, you just started.
- 1:56SPEAKER_02: They all raise their hands and they're like, that's it.
- 1:59SPEAKER_02: And then did you already have the Inconcentoro?
- 2:03SPEAKER_00: Version?
- 2:04SPEAKER_00: No, the version INCONCARO! I did a whole different, I didn't do it anything like they did it.
- 2:14SPEAKER_00: They kept massaging that song.
- 2:16SPEAKER_00: They wanted it to be funky and gritty, and they picked a tempo, and they were like, he wanted me to play somewhere between a 4-4 and a shuffle with my right hand, which is really hard between cha-cha-cha-cha-cha-cha-cha and check ka check, ga check, ka check, ka check, ka.
- 2:31SPEAKER_00: So it's a weird lope with your hand to play, right?
- 2:37SPEAKER_00: It was the it was a it was mental to have to have that many visuals, right?
- 2:43SPEAKER_00: To do it.
- 2:44SPEAKER_00: But they knew exactly what they wanted, man.
- 2:46SPEAKER_00: He T-Bone was adamant about every you know, little thing.
- 2:52SPEAKER_00: Well, it turns out, you know, he he he's weird.
- 2:54SPEAKER_00: He was weird.
- 2:55SPEAKER_00: He didn't he never told you what to do.
- 2:59SPEAKER_00: But once you did it, he knew exactly what he wanted.
- 3:04SPEAKER_00: Right?
- 3:04SPEAKER_00: He was very specific, but he let you get there yourself, if that makes any sense.
- 3:09SPEAKER_00: Yeah, right?
- 3:10SPEAKER_00: He never stepped in and said, do this, do this, do this.
- 3:13SPEAKER_00: He just kept giving scenarios and say, now what do you play in that scenario?
- 3:18SPEAKER_00: What do you play if you just stole a chicken?
- 3:20SPEAKER_00: I'm like, I don't know.
- 3:21SPEAKER_00: Apparently I play that, you know.
- 3:22SPEAKER_00: That's my that's my chicken steal.
- 3:24SPEAKER_00: You're running.
- 3:25SPEAKER_00: That's my chicken, that's my chicken stealing music, right?
- 3:28SPEAKER_00: Dude, that's so crazy.
- 3:30SPEAKER_00: That's such a cool story.
- 3:32SPEAKER_00: No, the coolest story, and I haven't told this, I've I've started, I've told it a little bit, but the coolest story was I got a chance to record it with him.
- 3:40SPEAKER_00: And this is when I first was gonna do this, right?
- 3:43SPEAKER_00: It was a weird thing for me to do a voiceover, right?
- 3:45SPEAKER_00: And I'd gone in the studio and I was trying to imagine what that'll look like.
- 3:48SPEAKER_00: I thought it could make him or me or both of us a laughing stock.
- 3:51SPEAKER_00: Like who knew what was gonna happen, right?
- 3:53SPEAKER_00: But when we were filming on the movie, Clooney said he wanted to sing it.
- 3:57SPEAKER_00: So T-Bone came up to me and he said, Hey, we've got a studio booked, and the day after tomorrow is a day off.
- 4:02SPEAKER_00: We were in Vicksburg, Mississippi, and there was a little studio out of town.
- 4:06SPEAKER_00: He said, Would you go and play it with Clooney and record it with him?
- 4:10SPEAKER_00: And in my mind, that was the three sevens, the jackpot struck.
- 4:14SPEAKER_00: I was like, Yes, go record it with Clooney, yes.
- 4:17SPEAKER_00: And we went in the studio.
- 4:18SPEAKER_00: So now I've called home and told my wife, where I was excited, right?
- 4:22SPEAKER_00: This was the big, big deal to record with Clooney.
- 4:25SPEAKER_00: I hear I'm recording with George Clooney, like what a weird thing, right?
- 4:30SPEAKER_00: So we're in the studio and we he did it one time through, and he can sing.
- 4:34SPEAKER_00: He's I've heard him on record say, well, he just is not a singer.
- 4:37SPEAKER_00: He could have sang it if he wanted it.
- 4:39SPEAKER_00: But it had to be organic and one take, and right, and he's he messed it up part of the way through.
- 4:44SPEAKER_00: He said, Well, start it one more time for me.
- 4:46SPEAKER_00: So I started again.
- 4:47SPEAKER_00: He messed up even earlier, said, Start it one more time.
- 4:51SPEAKER_00: Now the pressure's on, and he messed up even one earlier.
- 4:53SPEAKER_00: Now, meanwhile, he's looking in the control room and he doesn't see anyone, you know, doing high fives or anything.
- 4:58SPEAKER_00: So he's he just yeah, so he just decided after that third third miss, he'd come out of the studio, he took his headphones off, he says, Dan, he walked up and he says, Listen, I don't know what I'm doing in here.
- 5:08SPEAKER_00: This is a day off.
- 5:09SPEAKER_00: He says, I'm gonna make you a deal.
- 5:11SPEAKER_00: He said, I'll act, you sing.
- 5:13SPEAKER_00: And he shook my hand.
- 5:15SPEAKER_00: And I was crushed too.
- 5:16SPEAKER_00: Like he just he broke me.
- 5:17SPEAKER_00: I was like, God, come on, man.
- 5:20SPEAKER_00: Like I remember Colin Holm told my wife, I was like, he was doing, he could do it.
- 5:23SPEAKER_00: Yes, he could do it.
- 5:24SPEAKER_00: If they would just let him punch in, we could have 100%.
- 5:27SPEAKER_00: I said, no, it's gonna be me.
- 5:28SPEAKER_00: It's all fucked up.
- 5:29SPEAKER_00: I was like, it's all weird.
- 5:31SPEAKER_00: This is what I this is what I said.
- 5:32SPEAKER_02: Well, because you wanted him, you wanted to hear George's voice.
- 5:35SPEAKER_00: It just made so much sense in the opportunity to record it with Clooney, right?
- 5:39SPEAKER_00: And that's just this.
- 5:40SPEAKER_00: I'm just telling you, my mindset, like going in, it was just such a big bummer.
- 5:43SPEAKER_00: Now I have to look back now for the future.
- 5:45SPEAKER_00: Dan is now looking back, right?
- 5:46SPEAKER_00: Had I recorded that with Clooney, had he sang it, right?
- 5:50SPEAKER_00: I would have made my$320 for the session fee, and I would have been so proud, I would have told everybody, hey, look, I bought this whatever iPod with money I made Robert Clover with George Clooney, damn it, what do you think of that, right?
- 6:04SPEAKER_00: But because he said, I'll act you sing.

- 8:06SPEAKER_02: It was country music with polish.
- 8:08SPEAKER_02: Think Patsy Klein, Glenn Campbell, Tammy Wynette, George Jones, Charlie Pride.

- 8:41SPEAKER_02: It's where I go when I want to get away, think, slow down, have a restful time without technology.

- 9:48SPEAKER_00: I raised a family on that song.
- 9:51SPEAKER_00: And he totally.
- 9:53SPEAKER_00: That was his for the taking.
- 9:55SPEAKER_00: And he just decided as a day off, he didn't want to he didn't want to work for it.
- 10:00SPEAKER_00: He said, I'll act, you sing.
- 10:07SPEAKER_00: Yeah, but if they did it with his, I If his his might have been the one for it.
- 10:12SPEAKER_00: You don't know.
- 10:12SPEAKER_00: I mean, you don't know if they had that same kickoff with the same.
- 10:16SPEAKER_00: Yeah, well, again, I I don't if I could bottle it, buddy, I'd bottle it in a heartbeat.
- 10:21SPEAKER_00: I would.
- 10:21SPEAKER_00: I would uh I would I would do it again.
- 10:24SPEAKER_00: But uh it's just one of those, it's one of those you don't know where you're gonna be.
- 10:27SPEAKER_00: You don't know, I mean, we were walking out of the audition when they even asked.
- 10:30SPEAKER_00: My manager just out of the blue said, we were leaving.
- 10:33SPEAKER_00: She said, Hey, you haven't got Clooney's voice cast yet, have you?
- 10:36SPEAKER_00: Should Dan might be a candidate.
- 10:38SPEAKER_00: And they so they were like, Well, you want to come back tomorrow and uh an audition?
- 10:42SPEAKER_00: And I said, uh yeah, sure.
- 10:45SPEAKER_00: And I looked at her like right?
- 10:48SPEAKER_00: Made no sense to me.
- 10:50SPEAKER_00: And it ended up being the most pivotal moment of my career was her saying, hey, he might be a candidate.
- 10:57SPEAKER_00: That and Clooney saying, I'll act you sing, because that was, you know, that was the difference of you know freaking three figures and seven figures, you know, as a nutty who I couldn't have dreamed it in a million years.
- 11:15SPEAKER_00: I couldn't have dreamed that was even possible.
- 11:17SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and then by the time the movie comes out, by the time like for it to like ramp up and box office and no, all the stars lined up.
- 11:25SPEAKER_00: That was and it was right in the golden age, the kind of the end of selling hard copy CDs, like it was just about to taper off to nothing within like two or three years of that.
- 11:35SPEAKER_00: Forget it.
- 11:36SPEAKER_02: So did you get points on the master?
- 11:40SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I had points on the record, and and I had two and I had two songs on it because I sang a solo version and I sang a band version.
- 11:47SPEAKER_02: Yeah, there's two versions on it.
- 11:49SPEAKER_00: So I got yeah, I I got to double dip on on one that sold 10 million.
- 11:56SPEAKER_00: It was it was stupid.
- 11:57SPEAKER_02: That's amazing.
- 11:58SPEAKER_00: When I went to I remember my I remember going in to get my manager called and she was like, Well, you need to come into the office, I've got some money for you.
- 12:06SPEAKER_00: And I was like, Okay, great.
- 12:07SPEAKER_00: I mean, it's the best call you could ever get, right?
- 12:09SPEAKER_00: So I went in.
- 12:10SPEAKER_00: And what I knew, my I all I knew was there were 12 acts that had split the points up on the thing.
- 12:16SPEAKER_00: So my essentially I was getting a twelfth of what was on there.
- 12:21SPEAKER_00: That was my basic.
- 12:23SPEAKER_00: So I walked in and she hands me, you know, this envelope, and I was like, okay.
- 12:28SPEAKER_00: She goes, check it out.
- 12:29SPEAKER_00: And I opened it and looked at it, and I looked at it and I started going, she goes, What are you doing?
- 12:34SPEAKER_00: I said, What is a twelfth of this?
- 12:36SPEAKER_00: She goes, What do you care?
- 12:38SPEAKER_00: She goes, I said, Well, the twelfth is mine, right?
- 12:40SPEAKER_00: She goes, Oh, oh.
- 12:42SPEAKER_00: She goes, No, that is your twelfth.
- 12:46SPEAKER_00: The first check was enough to go and pay off my house and buy my wife a new car.
- 12:51SPEAKER_00: And she said, This is just, she says, this ain't the big one.
- 12:55SPEAKER_00: She says, this is just to get you this, this is just kind of kind of earnest money.
- 13:00SPEAKER_00: She said, This is the first one rolling in.
- 13:02SPEAKER_00: She goes, the next one will be the big one.
- 13:04SPEAKER_00: But the first one, again, I paid off my house, my car, her student loans, credit cards, back taxes, all kinds of shit.
- 13:14SPEAKER_02: Totally dug out.
- 13:15SPEAKER_02: American dream.
- 13:16SPEAKER_00: The American Dream.
- 13:17SPEAKER_00: I dug out of, I dug out of my the hole I built with music, right?
- 13:20SPEAKER_00: Because I built a pretty good one, because I decided I was going to play a banjo and I didn't give a damn.
- 13:25SPEAKER_00: I had my fought to keep my lights on every other week on the phone with the bill collectors saying, listen, it's coming, you know, driving to pay phones so that I could call bill collectors to turn my, you know, it was I I lived a life.
- 13:38SPEAKER_00: But yeah, then boom, I got to pay everything off.
- 13:42SPEAKER_00: And then again, this part of me not giving a shit about money, because that money, you know, it came.
- 13:47SPEAKER_00: And then I was like, well, I looked at my family, I was like, what do you want?
- 13:49SPEAKER_00: Again, the first thing I did, I was like, what do you want for a car?
- 13:51SPEAKER_00: I went and bought her a car.
- 13:53SPEAKER_00: She wanted a Ford Expedition, a freaking big land yacht, right?
- 13:56SPEAKER_00: She's a horse girl.
- 13:57SPEAKER_00: So I said, okay.
- 13:58SPEAKER_00: And I went and I bought her a land yacht.
- 14:01SPEAKER_00: And as soon as this is the funny thing, as soon as I had enough money where I could go buy a car like this, this is my car store.
- 14:07SPEAKER_00: I go in to buy the car, and now I know what I want to pay, and I've decided I've got enough money, I can buy whatever I want.
- 14:12SPEAKER_00: I'm not gonna suck up to you for nothing.
- 14:14SPEAKER_00: I said, I'm gonna give you this price and this price only.
- 14:16SPEAKER_00: And we started quiving, I think it was over like$500.
- 14:19SPEAKER_00: We were so close.
- 14:20SPEAKER_00: And the guy said, Listen, this is the price.
- 14:22SPEAKER_00: And I said, What you gotta understand is if I can get it for this price, I'll buy it.
- 14:26SPEAKER_00: And if I can't, I gotta go.
- 14:28SPEAKER_00: I said, just just he just try to understand.
- 14:31SPEAKER_00: And he said, Let me go back to my boss one more time.
- 14:34SPEAKER_00: And he went back to his boss one more time and he comes back out.
- 14:36SPEAKER_00: He says, Hey, are you the guy that sang that song in the movie?
- 14:43SPEAKER_00: And I said, The Clooney song, yeah.
- 14:46SPEAKER_00: He said, My boss wants to meet you.
- 14:48SPEAKER_00: He said, Will you go say hello to my boss?
- 14:50SPEAKER_00: I was like, sure.
- 14:51SPEAKER_00: So he takes me into the back.
- 14:54SPEAKER_00: Where now there's a guitarist sitting on a guitar stand in the corner.
- 14:57SPEAKER_00: And his boss says, You want to do that song?
- 14:59SPEAKER_00: I said, Yes, sir.
- 15:00SPEAKER_00: He says, Man.
- 15:01SPEAKER_00: He says, We've been going on this car.
- 15:03SPEAKER_00: He says, I'll tell you what, he says, Here's what I can give you the car for.
- 15:07SPEAKER_00: He says, if you play me, he says, Will you play me one verse of that song on that guitar right there?
- 15:11SPEAKER_00: And he slid me a piece of paper that was$4,000 under what I was arguing for.
- 15:17SPEAKER_00: I was trying to get, I was trying to get him to come five, he came down that$500 and$4,000 more.
- 15:24SPEAKER_00: It's not a fair world.
- 15:25SPEAKER_00: As soon as you don't need something, people are ready to give it to you, right?
- 15:29SPEAKER_00: But I played and I tried to figure out what my time, I said, what is that per hour?
- 15:33SPEAKER_00: I went home, I said, I just made$4,000 for about, I said, I maybe played 45 seconds of that song.
- 15:40SPEAKER_00: I did them a quick, you know, and then I just I didn't do the whole song.
- 15:43SPEAKER_00: I just did a quick verse and a chorus.
- 15:46SPEAKER_00: And I was out of there, and I thought, that's the most money I've ever made per hour playing doing anything, man.
- 15:52SPEAKER_00: Right there.
- 15:53SPEAKER_02: Wow.
- 15:53SPEAKER_00: And then this, and that's and again, that song, I don't even know how to, I can't quantify that.
- 15:59SPEAKER_00: I've I've gone as far as to Scotland, you know, went to Europe by myself, no one with me, played that one song, turned right around, got on a plane, and come back.
- 16:08SPEAKER_00: I mean, that song has been the most unreal dream song that someone like me could have.
- 16:15SPEAKER_00: Because again, I didn't set it, I was not a solo guy, I wasn't trying to be in any spotlight.
- 16:20SPEAKER_02: And the power of cinema, man, of what it was.
- 16:24SPEAKER_00: Again, a lot of stars came to when you look at the Cohen brothers and then T-Bone, the famous producer, T-Bone, and then Clooney, the heartthrob of heartthrobs, and then you know, they're just everybody that everything that made that happen.
- 16:37SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I can look, I mean, I couldn't see it going through it.
- 16:40SPEAKER_00: I can appreciate it a little more now because I've relived it, you know, a thousand times.
- 16:44SPEAKER_00: Everybody now he's now I'm at the point now where people, and I'm talking like grown-ass men, like some of them pretty damn old, that have come up.
- 16:51SPEAKER_00: I mean old gray-haired bald people.
- 16:53SPEAKER_00: I've been listening to you my whole life.
- 16:56SPEAKER_00: And I'm like, dude, how old are you?
