- 0:00Good morning. Welcome back to unlocking the
- 0:03Paradigm portal. My name is Sarah, so this week I
- 0:07am pushing the envelope a bit. If you haven't noticed, I'm
- 0:10diving heavy into generational wounds.
- 0:12Monday we talked about the unworthy wound that turns your
- 0:15exhaustion into your identity. Did that one land?
- 0:20Let it settle. Let everything settle and don't
- 0:23rush past it. Sit with it.
- 0:25Feel it. Recognize the discomfort.
- 0:28That's a place to grow. And I'll be honest, today's is a
- 0:32lot harder and it is a personal one for me.
- 0:35It has been, I've actually worked through it for the most
- 0:39part. But the we'll call them the
- 0:41echoes from the past have been kicking my ass.
- 0:43And let me tell you, I have tried to record this 12 times
- 0:47today, 12 times. And every time something has
- 0:51gone completely haywire sideways.
- 0:53I've had a coughing fit. The traffic outside is bonkers.
- 0:56The the neighbors dogs won't stop barking.
- 1:00It just keeps, I keep fumbling because this one was my own
- 1:04personal wound that quite literally dropped me to my knees
- 1:09in my kitchen years ago before I started all of my attachment
- 1:12work. So I'm going to just fumble
- 1:15through this and if I fumble, roll with it, whatever I'm not
- 1:18doing. This is take #13 So we're just
- 1:22going to go with it. This is the unlovable wound, the
- 1:27one that says that you are too much and you are not enough, and
- 1:31you are the kind of person that people eventually leave.
- 1:34It's super fun. And this one, it's quiet and it
- 1:38is freaking vicious. It is, frankly, it's insidious.
- 1:43So we're just going to dive in. You've probably never fully let
- 1:46anyone in if this wound is impacting you, not that you're
- 1:50aware of it. And you probably rarely, if
- 1:54ever, let anyone see the real version of you.
- 1:56Like the unedited one with the contradictions and the needs and
- 1:59the parts you've decided are too much or too weird to put on the
- 2:04table. So you let people see the
- 2:06curated version, the mask, the one that is palatable, safe
- 2:10enough to be loved. You probably have two sides to
- 2:14you, the real one that hides because you feel like it's just
- 2:18going to be rejected, and the fake one that is that exterior
- 2:22veneer that you let people see. And when people love this
- 2:27curated version, this mask, this exterior self, it doesn't quite
- 2:32hit the mark, does it? And that's because underneath
- 2:36the performance of being fine, underneath all of that is that
- 2:39underlying belief that if the person actually knew you like
- 2:43the real you, they would go. They would take off.
- 2:48So you keep a distance that looks an awful lot like
- 2:51closeness. You probably become an expert at
- 2:55feigning closeness and you stay just far enough inside of
- 2:58yourself that when the leaving happens and you are absolutely
- 3:01certain that it will, you can say you saw it coming.
- 3:05You can say it's fine, but it's not fine and it didn't start
- 3:09with you. You may think you've been
- 3:11protecting yourself from being hurt, but in reality, think
- 3:15about this. Have you been protecting others
- 3:17from the version of you that you decided is too much to be loved?
- 3:21That, my friends, is the wound talking, not the truth.
- 3:24And the unlovable wound is this core belief that real sustained
- 3:28love, like the kind that sees you and and stays with you and
- 3:34chooses you every single time, is not available to you.
- 3:40And not because of circumstances, but because of
- 3:43something essential in who you are.
- 3:46It is bone deep. It's different from the unworthy
- 3:50wound. So the unworthy wound says I
- 3:51have to earn my place. But the unlovable wound goes
- 3:54further. It says even if I perform
- 3:57perfectly, the love that comes back still won't last because
- 4:01the problem isn't what I do, it's who and what I am.
- 4:05It is visceral. It is a sucker punch, let me
- 4:08tell you. And it shows up as push pull
- 4:11dynamics. And you want closeness
- 4:14desperately. But the moment someone gets
- 4:15close enough that their opinion actually matters, you either run
- 4:19or you start testing and you create small disasters to see if
- 4:23they'll stay. And you push right at the edge
- 4:26of the relationships limits to find out if it will hold.
- 4:29Because being blindsided by an ending is the thing that your
- 4:32nervous system believes it cannot survive.
- 4:35So you manufacture the crisis, and you control the exit before
- 4:40it can sneak up on you. It's like a controlled
- 4:42detonation. But the crazy thing is, you
- 4:44probably don't even realize that's what you're doing.
- 4:48Or you go the opposite direction and you become the perfect
- 4:51partner, the perfect friend. You anticipate every need,
- 4:54smooth every rough edge. Make yourself indispensable.
- 4:58Because if you are necessary enough, maybe they won't leave,
- 5:02and if you are useful enough, maybe that can substitute for
- 5:05lovable. But here's what makes this wound
- 5:08particularly brutal. It is self confirming.
- 5:12The distance that you keep creates the disconnection that
- 5:15you feared. The testing strains the
- 5:18relationship until it breaks and the over functioning breeds
- 5:21resentment. And every time something ends,
- 5:24the wound says ha. See right there, proof.
- 5:30Oh the unlovable wound does not wait to be proven right.
- 5:34It engineers the evidence and then it calls that evidence
- 5:37reality. It's self gaslighting.
- 5:41And where did it come from? Let's go back.
- 5:43Just like on Monday, the generational map before I get
- 5:46there. There is no judgement, no shame
- 5:49and no blame. Those are my 3 hard and fast
- 5:51rules. No breaking that.
- 5:53Got it. We are scientists observing
- 5:55patterns. That's it.
- 5:57So as always, this wound did not originate with you, but it
- 6:00travels differently than the unworthy wound.
- 6:02So the unworthy wound gets passed through messages about
- 6:05productivity, right? Well, the unlovable wound gets
- 6:07passed through the quality of emotional presence.
- 6:10What happened when you brought your full self into the room as
- 6:14a child? And starting with the Silent
- 6:16Generation, they loved their children, but the emotional
- 6:19vocabulary of that era was essentially non existent, hence
- 6:22the name Silent Generation. So they managed the logistics of
- 6:26care, food, shelter, discipline, and that was considered the full
- 6:31expression of love. Children who needed more were
- 6:34told directly or through consistent withdrawal, that
- 6:37their emotional needs were excessive and that being easier
- 6:41to manage was the same as being loved.
- 6:44Then come the boomers, and they inherited that template.
- 6:47They understood more than their parents that children had
- 6:50emotional needs but had no road map for meeting those needs
- 6:54because no one had ever met theirs.
- 6:56It's the blind leading the blind.
- 6:59So love was conditionally present.
- 7:01It's warm when you're easy and it's cooler when you're
- 7:04difficult. And the message may not have
- 7:06been spoken. It might have, but it may not
- 7:08have been, and it was received. The hard to love parts of you
- 7:13are the parts that Make Love go away.
- 7:16And then we move into Gen. X Oh my lovely Gen.
- 7:19X. And Gen.
- 7:21X took all of that stuff from the Boomers in the Silent
- 7:24Generation into the divorce epidemic of the 70s and the 80s.
- 7:29And many Gen. X kids watched love end.
- 7:32They watched families dissolve. And the wound for Gen.
- 7:35X often looks like a bone deep conviction that permanence isn't
- 7:39real, that love is temporary by nature, and that the smart move
- 7:43is to expect the ending. So the wound showed up
- 7:47differently with Gen. X.
- 7:48It wasn't necessarily I am unlovable.
- 7:51It's that love is not realistic and it doesn't stay.
- 7:56It's like jaded around love, period.
- 8:00So then we go to the millennials and they got the wound wrapped
- 8:03in a paradox. So they were told that they are
- 8:06special and beloved while raised during this intense outcome
- 8:11focused parenting that prioritized achievement over
- 8:13presence. A lot of millennials have their
- 8:16boomer parents now. It's so funny.
- 8:20I'm just going to side note this.
- 8:23I'm noticing my throat is getting all clogged and gunky
- 8:27and that for me is a sign of my own resedual wounding trying to
- 8:31come up And like, shut me up. If you remember my first
- 8:34Saturday or Sunday deep dive, I talked about how speaking and
- 8:37using my voice, it would literally, I felt choked off.
- 8:40And it's literally what happens when things hit a little too
- 8:43close to home. So I apologize if I start
- 8:46coughing. Oh, OK, where was I?
- 8:48Millennials. Millennials.
- 8:51Outcome focused parenting and it's all about achievement over
- 8:55presence and love probably felt abundant in the abstract, but
- 8:59like oddly thin, so to speak, in the specific.
- 9:03And the message that they would have received is I am loved for
- 9:06the version of me that succeeds. I'm not sure anyone would stay
- 9:10for the version that falls apart and then we move on to Gen.
- 9:14Z. Oh Gen.
- 9:15Z, Oh no matter what anyone says, they have it so beyond
- 9:19difficult. Gen.
- 9:21Z is navigating this with 0 precedent because lovability is
- 9:25now being publicly quantified in real time with followers and
- 9:30comments and the algorithm deciding what gets seen.
- 9:34And the curated self has become so normalized that the real self
- 9:37has nowhere left to breathe. I have witnessed this with my
- 9:41kids and with kids abroad. They, the mask, that's all they
- 9:46know. Most of them really don't have
- 9:49that solid sense of self inside. So the mass becomes what they
- 9:54project out and who they truly believe that they are.
- 9:57It's not, they're not even aware that they have this dichotomy.
- 10:00It's really challenging to watch.
- 10:03And This is why the mental health crisis with teenagers and
- 10:06young adults is so tragic right now.
- 10:10Anyways, that's a whole other side conversation.
- 10:14So all of this is different contexts, different expressions,
- 10:18but it's the same wound running underneath and it's the same
- 10:21question, which is, am I the kind of person that someone
- 10:23could actually stay for? So every generation answered
- 10:27that question with the only tools that they had, and then
- 10:30they pass their answer down before their children were even
- 10:33old enough to know that they've received it.
- 10:35And this unlovable wound, it doesn't announce itself.
- 10:38Let me make that super clear. It operates in the background of
- 10:41your daily choices, like a setting that no one has shown
- 10:43you how to change, and it pops up like a sucker punch.
- 10:47And it shows up in very subtle ways before that, in how you
- 10:52edit yourself before you speak. You know that half second pause
- 10:55when you assess whether what you were just about to say is too
- 10:58much or too needy or too weird, and then you try to replace it
- 11:03with something more acceptable. You've done it so many times it
- 11:06probably doesn't even feel like you're editing anymore.
- 11:08It just feels like speaking. And it shows up.
- 11:11And how you handle conflict. So for some people, the wound
- 11:14creates conflict avoidance so thorough that your actual needs
- 11:18have become nearly invisible, not just to the people around
- 11:22you, but to yourself. And you agree not because you
- 11:25agree, but because disagreement feels like a test.
- 11:27The relationship might fail, but then for others it runs the
- 11:31opposite direction. So then conflict becomes the
- 11:33testing ground. If someone can stay through me
- 11:37at my most difficult, my most demanding, then maybe the
- 11:40staying is real and the fighting is never really about whatever
- 11:43the fight is about. It's about finding out if the
- 11:47love has limits and the wound always suspects it does, so it
- 11:50searches for them and it'll show up.
- 11:54And how you receive love that you didn't earn, like random
- 11:57affection, the spontaneous I love you, or the text that says
- 12:00I was just thinking about you, It should feel good, right?
- 12:04And it does, maybe briefly, but then that wound comes for it.
- 12:08That freaking insidious wound comes out of the dark and
- 12:11latches on, and it finds a way to explain it away, keeping it
- 12:15at arm's length. Because if you let it all the
- 12:17way in and it turns out to be temporary, the loss feels
- 12:20catastrophic. So it's better to maintain the
- 12:23distance. That was totally my jam, by the
- 12:26way. I was so good at explaining
- 12:29everything away. But it also can show up in
- 12:33loneliness. And not the loneliness of
- 12:35actually being alone, but the loneliness of being surrounded
- 12:38by people who think that they know you while you know that
- 12:42they only know the version that you let out.
- 12:46The pretty one, the polite one, the just right one that you feel
- 12:50is OK because they might like that more than the real you.
- 12:53And it's the loneliness of being seen and still somehow not found
- 12:59that's the loneliness of the unlovable wound.
- 13:02It's not of being abandoned, it's of never fully arriving.
- 13:07So here's the thing. The wound does not want you to
- 13:09know. It is not evidence about your
- 13:11nature. It is evidence about your
- 13:13history. The belief that you are
- 13:16fundamentally unlovable was formed in a specific context, a
- 13:21family system, an attachment, dynamic moments in childhood
- 13:25where your emotional needs were met with inconsistency or
- 13:29withdrawal. The belief was a rational
- 13:32response to that environment. And if the people who were
- 13:35supposed to love me unconditionally had conditions
- 13:39and limitations, then maybe the limitation is me.
- 13:44But that is a child's logic applied to an adult's reality.
- 13:48The child didn't have access to the fuller picture, the full
- 13:52picture that the people who were supposed to love them
- 13:55unconditionally were carrying wounds that they'd never
- 13:58examined. Hell, they didn't even know that
- 14:00examining them was an option. They didn't even know that they
- 14:03existed. That's just what you did.
- 14:06And the will with the excuse me there's a fumble, the
- 14:09withdrawal. It wasn't about you being good
- 14:14enough or worthy. The inconsistency was a symptom
- 14:18of the parents unfinished work and their own deeply embedded
- 14:23wounds, not an accurate assessment of what you as a
- 14:27child deserved. And when you turn the light on,
- 14:30when you look at the wound instead of letting it run around
- 14:33like a little asshole in the dark, the 1st shift is that
- 14:37locus of the evidence. The wound has been generating
- 14:42evidence from inside your nervous system and calling it
- 14:44objective reality. But the light lets you ask, is
- 14:47this true or is this what I was taught to expect?
- 14:52And the second shift is the possibility of something
- 14:55different. The wound narrows your field of
- 14:57vision and in the light you start to see what it's been
- 15:00blocking the people who have been trying to reach you and
- 15:04couldn't get all the way in because you wouldn't let them.
- 15:08The love that was real and consistent, that the wound filed
- 15:12away is temporary, pending further evidence.
- 15:16This is not fast work. The wound is old.
- 15:20Seeing it clearly does not dissolve it, but it changes your
- 15:24relationship with it. Instead of being the wound, you
- 15:27start to have the wound and something you have you can
- 15:31examine, you can disagree with it, you can challenge it, you
- 15:36can slowly, imperfectly begin to move differently inside of it.
- 15:43And at the bottom of all of it, under the self protection and
- 15:46the distance and the tests in the editing is something the
- 15:49wound has been working very, very hard to keep you away from.
- 15:53The knowledge that you are not too much, that you have never
- 15:58been too much, that the people who couldn't hold you fully were
- 16:02limited in their capacity not, and I repeat, not accurate in
- 16:08their assessment. The wound says you are the kind
- 16:12of person that people leave. The truth is you are the kind of
- 16:15person who learned to leave first.
- 16:18That is not the same thing. So that was a lot, right?
- 16:25We're going to move on to our stone for today.
- 16:28And again, it's a 2 parter. I'm pushing the limit with this
- 16:31'cause I feel like 1 stone, one baby step.
- 16:33You got that by now. SO2 parts, they work together.
- 16:37The first part I want you to identify one place where you are
- 16:41keeping a controlled distance, not in a relationship that is
- 16:45actually unsafe. Let me be clear, if you are in a
- 16:48truly toxic, abusive, unhealthy, bad relationship, that's not
- 16:54what we're talking about. But somewhere that safety is
- 16:57present, connection is possible, and you are still quietly
- 17:01holding something back, just identify the place.
- 17:04That's it. Identify where the real version
- 17:08of your need or opinion has been replaced with the acceptable
- 17:11one. Just notice.
- 17:13That's it. Just name it.
- 17:15You don't have to do anything with it or about it yet.
- 17:18Just locate where the distance is and what it's costing you
- 17:23now. Second this week.
- 17:25Let something land. Just one thing.
- 17:27When someone tells you they're glad you're in their life.
- 17:30When someone checks on you. When someone chooses you.
- 17:33When someone sees you, clearly let it in.
- 17:37Don't deflect it. Don't immediately find the
- 17:40reason it doesn't count. Don't reciprocate so fast that
- 17:43you never actually received it. By the way, When someone pays
- 17:47you a compliment, it's OK to say thank you.
- 17:50Actually, my favorite phrase is when I get a compliment, I say
- 17:53thank you. I am, and I've had people that
- 17:55are really startled by that and I say because I'm practicing
- 17:59owning it, so thank you for the compliment.
- 18:02I'm going to see it in myself. I am that thank you and don't
- 18:07immediately reciprocate. If someone compliments you, you
- 18:09don't have to compliment back. It's OK to just receive it and
- 18:13let it be real. Let it stay for like 10 seconds
- 18:17without the wound picking it apart.
- 18:19It's going to feel weird. It's going to feel
- 18:21uncomfortable. Sit with it, Lean into the
- 18:23discomfort. Because 10 seconds of letting
- 18:26love be real, That's the crack in the door.
- 18:30That's where we start. And you don't have to believe
- 18:33the wound is wrong yet. You just have to let in enough
- 18:36light that it stops being the only voice in the room.
- 18:40So I will be back on Friday and I'm going to tackle the next
- 18:45one, which is going to be, I'll give you a little heads up, the
- 18:48unsafe wound. This is the one that lives in
- 18:51the body. And after everything that we've
- 18:53looked at this week, it's going to make a lot of things make
- 18:56sense. There's a reason there's a
- 18:59method to my madness and a reason I did it in this order.
- 19:02So I will be back Friday for that episode.
- 19:04In the meantime, Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday nights, 9:00
- 19:06PM Eastern Standard Time is light in the dark, soft,
- 19:10soothing. And by the way, this week each
- 19:12of the episodes is going to be based upon the previous day's
- 19:18episode. So the Tuesday night one was
- 19:21based on the unworthy wound. The Thursday night will be based
- 19:25on the unlovable wound. The Saturday night will be based
- 19:28on the unsafe wound. And this is going to continue
- 19:30for a while because there's a whole lot of core wounds and I'm
- 19:35really enjoying digging into these.
- 19:37So like, share, subscribe, hype, all that stuff.
- 19:40I will say that does not tell me that I am loved or that I'm
- 19:43worth something. It just helps my channel spread.
- 19:46So show me a little bit of YouTube love or Spotify love
- 19:49with all of that. Leave me some comments.
- 19:51I love, love, love hearing from you guys and getting feedback
- 19:56and seeing how we are all in this shit together.
- 20:00OK, anyone? By the way, I've said this
- 20:02before, anyone who acts like I'm all healed, this is how it was
- 20:05done. Please disregard them.
- 20:07Nobody has ever fully healed. We are all in the trenches
- 20:11together, so I'll be back.
