- 0:22Speaker 2: And a very pleasant good morning to you. You're listening
- 0:24Speaker 2: to Ask the Expert w c HS the Voice of Charleston.
- 0:26Speaker 2: I'm Del Cooper. Thanks for tuning in on this Wednesday morning.
- 0:30Speaker 2: It's a little dryer out than maybe I expected for
- 0:32Speaker 2: this morning, and that's good news because Larry Dawson made
- 0:36Speaker 2: the the route end like he normally does on his day.
- 0:39Speaker 2: It's Wednesday, and it is Larry Dawson day here on
- 0:41Speaker 2: five A d w c HS on Ask the Expert.
- 0:43Speaker 2: He still buys cars and he still does radio with us. Larry,
- 0:46Speaker 2: Good morning, how you doing this morning?
- 0:49Speaker 3: A little bit early today, Remember we had to do this.
- 1:00Speaker 4: For their round mantras.
- 1:01Speaker 3: So and I'll tell you another great West.
- 1:08Speaker 4: Virginia casady out.
- 1:12Speaker 3: You know, it brings up those cameras you could see
- 1:15Speaker 3: if there is any disturbance in the freeways.
- 1:19Speaker 2: Let me let me have you do something here. Let's
- 1:20Speaker 2: have you switch mics here. For some reason, that mic
- 1:22Speaker 2: is being squirrely with me this morning. So we're going
- 1:25Speaker 2: to Uh, we're going to go down to the other
- 1:26Speaker 2: mic and see how that one works. There we go,
- 1:28Speaker 2: that one works ring, there we go, the other one's on.
- 1:31Speaker 2: But uh, I don't know the new technology.
- 1:33Speaker 4: Man, I'm here, I'm.
- 1:36Speaker 2: Yeah. That's good. And it was much drier or it
- 1:39Speaker 2: was a dry ride in this morning, which I didn't expect.
- 1:41Speaker 2: I mean, I know that the rain kind of moved
- 1:42Speaker 2: out and we're kind of waiting to see what was
- 1:44Speaker 2: going to happen. But after yesterday morning and driving into
- 1:47Speaker 2: work in a flood basically like flood from the from
- 1:49Speaker 2: the sky, I was really concerned about this morning. But
- 1:52Speaker 2: hopefully folks are drying out a little bit and we're
- 1:54Speaker 2: a little bit of a holding pattern right now.
- 1:55Speaker 3: Well, I was in business doing retail all those years,
- 1:59Speaker 3: and we would have a flash flooding like this. I
- 2:03Speaker 3: would instruct by staff and the public on this radio
- 2:09Speaker 3: station that in the next ten days to two weeks,
- 2:13Speaker 3: you're probably gonna see an uptick of cars for sale
- 2:16Speaker 3: by owner. It's that car that was near the creek.
- 2:21Speaker 3: They got water and maybe didn't have the insurance policy
- 2:24Speaker 3: to go along with it, and they're going to get
- 2:26Speaker 3: dried out and to liquidate, they'll put them on the
- 2:32Speaker 3: yard cells or however through the social media and they'll
- 2:37Speaker 3: markets cars. It happens every time, and it's in outlying
- 2:42Speaker 3: areas that you know, the parking area was near the creek.
- 2:47Speaker 3: The creek came up, got in the car, maybe not
- 2:50Speaker 3: submerged car in trunk.
- 2:52Speaker 4: You know, you can.
- 2:53Speaker 3: There's ways to detect it, but you kind of have
- 2:57Speaker 3: to be a professional or you have to be going
- 3:00Speaker 3: to look and see for those talltel signs. And this
- 3:05Speaker 3: is the perfect season for that lesser or inexpensive car
- 3:10Speaker 3: because we're back to school and everybody's seeking at ten
- 3:15Speaker 3: thousand dollars under vehicle. Actually, I just listened to when
- 3:18Speaker 3: I was sitting in the green room. The average three
- 3:22Speaker 3: year old car just passed twenty thousand dollar mark.
- 3:27Speaker 2: Isn't that something else? It is?
- 3:28Speaker 3: Wow, Yes it is, and I see it. I still
- 3:32Speaker 3: receive a lot of calls. You know, I'm not in
- 3:34Speaker 3: the car selling business. I'm in the car buying business.
- 3:37Speaker 3: But a lot of people reach us out. Matter of fact,
- 3:40Speaker 3: a lady called Jeff, and Jeff shared her number with
- 3:43Speaker 3: me here a local lady, and she was looking, you know,
- 3:48Speaker 3: for some advice where to go to, you know, find her,
- 3:52Speaker 3: and I think there was a child involved, or maybe
- 3:54Speaker 3: a grandchild.
- 3:55Speaker 4: A very nice lady.
- 3:56Speaker 3: I appreciate the call, appreciate the referral, but that is
- 4:00Speaker 3: a tall order to try to find something in that
- 4:02Speaker 3: affordable price range. When we went through the COVID years
- 4:08Speaker 3: of late twenty to about twenty three, going on twenty four,
- 4:15Speaker 3: cars was short new cars. The inventories had they weren't
- 4:19Speaker 3: able to build because of the chips. Well, when you
- 4:25Speaker 3: take a void in an area that's flowing to produce used,
- 4:30Speaker 3: you have a mute, a three to four year lag.
- 4:33Speaker 4: Now I think new.
- 4:34Speaker 3: Inventory airs plenty. I can tell because I watched the
- 4:37Speaker 3: incentives or new but that three four year old car
- 4:42Speaker 3: is still a little bit in short supply. And anytime
- 4:47Speaker 3: you have a shortage of inventory, you have an increase
- 4:50Speaker 3: in price. You know, lots of cars lower price, not
- 4:55Speaker 3: so many cars higher price because there's.
- 4:58Speaker 4: A gap there.
- 4:59Speaker 3: We're fastly coming out of it. I think you and
- 5:02Speaker 3: I having this conversation next year, we're going to see
- 5:06Speaker 3: a drop in the secondary car market, not a huge drop,
- 5:09Speaker 3: not an avalanche by any means, because the new has
- 5:13Speaker 3: escalated so high that it still creates such a demand there,
- 5:18Speaker 3: but there is still a shortage of that premium three
- 5:22Speaker 3: year old, four year old car that's not Miley. And
- 5:25Speaker 3: when I say Miley, I'm talking about today. You'd like
- 5:29Speaker 3: to see sixty to seventy and under sixty or seventy
- 5:33Speaker 3: thousand hunders. Ten years ago, you and I are sitting here,
- 5:37Speaker 3: I would tell you that number was forty three US.
- 5:40Speaker 3: And we are a mobile society. We are moving constantly,
- 5:45Speaker 3: and we're moving in our automobiles. And there was also
- 5:48Speaker 3: a push to EV's. Now what I do see out
- 5:52Speaker 3: on the market that if you are okay buying an
- 5:56Speaker 3: EV that's two or three years old, you can buy
- 6:00Speaker 3: that vehicle less than you can a gasline car.
- 6:04Speaker 4: It just it.
- 6:07Speaker 3: I admire the creativity of doing it. I won't say
- 6:11Speaker 3: it did work, but I don't think it worked to
- 6:14Speaker 3: the expectations of what the manufacturers thought. You know, Ford
- 6:19Speaker 3: was the American manufacturer that really geared toward it, and
- 6:24Speaker 3: they have pulled their horns in it probably created I
- 6:29Speaker 3: own Ford stock, so I can see the stock valuation.
- 6:33Speaker 3: It's not moving, and I believe they had to take
- 6:37Speaker 3: it on a chin of you know, creating the lines
- 6:41Speaker 3: to go EV and then deciding not to and not
- 6:45Speaker 3: that they do not have EV vehicles. If we having
- 6:48Speaker 3: this conversation three years ago, I think they were all in.
- 6:51Speaker 3: As a matter of fact, they were going to their
- 6:53Speaker 3: dealers and I won't say charging, but there was a
- 6:57Speaker 3: plateau of a lot of money, but you was guaranteed
- 7:01Speaker 3: so many evs. Some dealers jumped in or did that.
- 7:04Speaker 3: I think they were receiving that maybe a rebate or
- 7:08Speaker 3: some money back, but that's how serious forward was. I
- 7:12Speaker 3: think everybody chases Tesla. Tesla seems to have that and
- 7:16Speaker 3: that's all they do. You know, when that's all you do,
- 7:19Speaker 3: you're probably the best apped.
- 7:21Speaker 2: I think they had government credits for him too, and
- 7:24Speaker 2: that went away as well. So I mean people that
- 7:25Speaker 2: are the incentive to maybe if you were on the
- 7:27Speaker 2: border there on something. The incentive went away to do
- 7:29Speaker 2: something along those lines.
- 7:31Speaker 3: I remember the days of nineteen seventy eight to eighty.
- 7:36Speaker 3: GM decided to put a diesel in a three point
- 7:41Speaker 3: fifty block and there was people as buying the big
- 7:44Speaker 3: Pontiacs and olds My Bills and Chevrolets, and they were
- 7:47Speaker 3: having a converted gas to a diesel and it was
- 7:51Speaker 3: a fiasco.
- 7:52Speaker 4: It was a failure. It just didn't work.
- 7:56Speaker 3: But you know, in desperate times, there's desperation mood. And
- 8:00Speaker 3: I think as we were moving through the COVID years,
- 8:03Speaker 3: not knowing how it was going to the end game
- 8:07Speaker 3: was going to be, there was some decisions to make
- 8:10Speaker 3: that probably wouldn't be made today. And that's just part
- 8:15Speaker 3: of the that's part of life, and that's part of manufacturing.
- 8:18Speaker 3: One man's loss is another man's game. I do read.
- 8:22Speaker 3: I follow a guy actually on Facebook that he is
- 8:27Speaker 3: He aggressively buy EV's, but they're at a lesser price.
- 8:33Speaker 3: And he's in an area of New Jersey that an
- 8:35Speaker 3: ev Because of commuting, you might go five miles, that
- 8:40Speaker 3: might take you an hour.
- 8:41Speaker 4: In New Jersey, we're here.
- 8:43Speaker 3: You know, it took me forty five minutes to go
- 8:45Speaker 3: thirty miles. You know, I have a gasoline vehicle. Maybe
- 8:50Speaker 3: if I was sitting in that bottleneck Trenton, New Jersey,
- 8:54Speaker 3: I'd look at EV's. You know, just because we live
- 8:56Speaker 3: in West Virginia doesn't make it the whole world. You know,
- 9:00Speaker 3: it's how we travel. It is a little bit different.
- 9:03Speaker 3: I was having a discussion yesterday, Actually I was in
- 9:05Speaker 3: a board meeting and we were talking about the land
- 9:08Speaker 3: reuse agency that I sat on, and one of the
- 9:13Speaker 3: individuals talking about Ohio what they were doing, and sadly
- 9:19Speaker 3: enough Ohio. I think the city of Columbus probably has
- 9:22Speaker 3: double the population that we have in West Virginia. So
- 9:25Speaker 3: how we do things and how they do things is
- 9:28Speaker 3: different because based upon population. You know, you go to
- 9:32Speaker 3: Metro Columbus and doubling all the way around there, there's
- 9:35Speaker 3: a lot of people. It's a very good car town.
- 9:38Speaker 3: I will tell you this. It seems to be the
- 9:41Speaker 3: closest major city that is heavily involved in the automobile
- 9:49Speaker 3: wholestel in because they have two major, two major auctions.
- 9:54Speaker 3: We have two in West Virginia. Mister Powe owns ones
- 9:57Speaker 3: in Shenston, one is in Saint Albans, but they have
- 10:00Speaker 3: two on oppotion ends of the town, and there is others,
- 10:04Speaker 3: but they are two major auctions. I was kind of
- 10:07Speaker 3: brought up at the Columbus Fair Auto auction. It was
- 10:10Speaker 3: owned by a family. It is now owned by I
- 10:13Speaker 3: think a group of investors. And then on the other
- 10:16Speaker 3: side of town is Adessa and these are large, large
- 10:19Speaker 3: auction houses I believe Adessa is now owned by Carvana.
- 10:23Speaker 4: I almost know that.
- 10:24Speaker 3: I mean, you can google it and correct me in
- 10:26Speaker 3: and if you please do if I'm wrong, But I
- 10:28Speaker 3: think Carvana is the owner of Odessa, which was like
- 10:33Speaker 3: the second or third largest auto auction in the United States.
- 10:38Speaker 3: So that's why they are aggressively by speaking of Carvana.
- 10:45Speaker 3: I believe about two months ago I experimented because I'm
- 10:49Speaker 3: now a civilian plate. I have a vehicle that's titled
- 10:53Speaker 3: in Larry Dowson and it has a civilian plate, and
- 10:56Speaker 3: that is how you approach Carvana to get a quote.
- 11:01Speaker 3: So I actually I left here, received a call lady
- 11:05Speaker 3: was going to sell Carvana ended up selling to me.
- 11:08Speaker 3: I asked her a question why she chose me over them,
- 11:11Speaker 3: and she said, well, first of all, you're higher than them,
- 11:14Speaker 3: or your offer is higher. But second of all, they
- 11:17Speaker 3: charged four hundred dollars to come and.
- 11:18Speaker 2: Get the car.
- 11:19Speaker 4: I had no idea. I did not know that.
- 11:22Speaker 3: So I walked out to the vehicle that I'm a
- 11:25Speaker 3: civilian now, and I took a picture of the plate
- 11:29Speaker 3: and they sent me a question, here, do you have
- 11:31Speaker 3: double keys or two sets of keys? Has it been
- 11:33Speaker 3: in the accidents that spoke free and you know the
- 11:36Speaker 3: common questions I would ask and I answered them and
- 11:40Speaker 3: they gave me a quote. Over the last two months
- 11:45Speaker 3: they have contacted me probably a dozen times, and that
- 11:48Speaker 3: number has moved an never moved downward, and now it's
- 11:52Speaker 3: back to the original quote in about six weeks. Now
- 11:56Speaker 3: what pushed that market, I really don't know. But with
- 11:59Speaker 3: every one of those inquiries, the emails that they sent me,
- 12:04Speaker 3: guess what they followed up with want to buy a
- 12:06Speaker 3: car and gave me a selection of what they have
- 12:10Speaker 3: similar to what I have, which is a gmc Denali.
- 12:14Speaker 3: So I see their game and I don't understands algorithms,
- 12:19Speaker 3: but I'm sure every inquiry to sell, if they're getting
- 12:24Speaker 3: multiple inquiries to purchase and they see an upticking, that
- 12:27Speaker 3: they're going to go back and revisit people that made
- 12:31Speaker 3: inquiries to sell. In other words, it's the playing field.
- 12:35Speaker 3: And if you have a vehicle that you want to sell,
- 12:37Speaker 3: they have a lot of inquiries on wanting to buy,
- 12:40Speaker 3: you're probably gonna get more money. And I'm sure it's
- 12:43Speaker 3: all computer. It's not one guy setting there.
- 12:46Speaker 2: You know. One of the big concerns that I have
- 12:49Speaker 2: with this technology going forward. And you've brought up so
- 12:51Speaker 2: many concerns with similar companies during the course of the show.
- 12:55Speaker 2: But I've been following these stories of companies that are
- 12:58Speaker 2: trying to charge famously. A few years ago, there was
- 13:02Speaker 2: a story breaking that Wendy's was going to try surge pricing,
- 13:04Speaker 2: which you know, based on the amount of business they
- 13:07Speaker 2: were getting the the menu prices would be dynamic and
- 13:09Speaker 2: they would go up, and that was not quite actually
- 13:12Speaker 2: what the story was, but people thought that was a
- 13:14Speaker 2: story and there was a huge pushback and it never happened.
- 13:16Speaker 2: What is happening, and it's more silent behind the seams.
- 13:19Speaker 2: There's like grocery stores that use apps and different things
- 13:21Speaker 2: along those lines where you can have your your items
- 13:24Speaker 2: change cost based on the data in your phone. Like
- 13:28Speaker 2: there's situations, there's legal battles going on now where people
- 13:31Speaker 2: are getting charged more because the data on their phone
- 13:34Speaker 2: indicates that they live in more affluent areas and the
- 13:37Speaker 2: price is changed on them and stuff like that. So
- 13:38Speaker 2: imagine that if you're trying to sell your car or
- 13:41Speaker 2: buy a car using your phone and all that data
- 13:43Speaker 2: is on there, that is just free for people to
- 13:46Speaker 2: collate put together and to offer back to you however
- 13:48Speaker 2: you want. Suddenly, because you might live in Hurricane instead
- 13:51Speaker 2: of in Putnam County instead of in Kanaal County, that
- 13:54Speaker 2: price goes up a little bit or something along those lines.
- 13:56Speaker 2: I mean that is I mean that is that that's
- 14:00Speaker 2: in late stage capitalism right there. I don't know that
- 14:02Speaker 2: that is bad stuff right there. When it comes to consumers.
- 14:05Speaker 3: Remember when you were younger and I was younger, and
- 14:09Speaker 3: we would go to the grocery store with our mother
- 14:12Speaker 3: and they would take the can of pork and beans
- 14:14Speaker 3: off that was clearly marked with the price. Yeah, and
- 14:18Speaker 3: then with the several other items, we would go to
- 14:21Speaker 3: the checkout line and that cashier would pick it up
- 14:24Speaker 3: and look at it, not scan it, look at it.
- 14:27Speaker 3: And when they were done, your mother would write, or
- 14:32Speaker 3: your father or whoever you're with would probably write a
- 14:35Speaker 3: check and give to the clerk. They would bag your
- 14:38Speaker 3: groceries and you go out the door. Today, I don't
- 14:43Speaker 3: think people even looks at prices. It happens so fast
- 14:47Speaker 3: that listen, you're looking up like a ticker take, you know,
- 14:49Speaker 3: watching it's like a stock market, the evaluation of it.
- 14:54Speaker 3: And then if you don't have a I'm not picking
- 14:57Speaker 3: on Kroger's, but if you don't have a Crogers's card,
- 15:00Speaker 3: are you discriminate against me because I don't have one?
- 15:04Speaker 3: And yes I do have one, but let's say I
- 15:06Speaker 3: don't have one and my bill is higher. They're tracking you.
- 15:12Speaker 3: You're giving them all your information. Now can you substain
- 15:17Speaker 3: from that? You know you can pay more and say
- 15:19Speaker 3: I'll have one, but it's foolish to do that. So
- 15:23Speaker 3: you're falling victim to their way of gathering all the information.
- 15:27Speaker 3: And I'm going to repeat myself if I said the
- 15:29Speaker 3: last several years, I don't ask for information, I ask
- 15:33Speaker 3: for your name. Let's go look at your car. Nine
- 15:36Speaker 3: times out of ten, I'm sitting on your front porch
- 15:39Speaker 3: driveway in your living room. We're discussing your car. I'm
- 15:44Speaker 3: seeing that everything you have done your car. I'm following
- 15:47Speaker 3: the story the car which I own. Yes, there was
- 15:52Speaker 3: a questionnaire, but I feel I'm being penalized because I
- 15:57Speaker 3: will change that car every five thousand miles. It's all
- 16:00Speaker 3: been kept inside. I washed and wax it mean, it's
- 16:03Speaker 3: a thirteen year old car. It's like Jeff's car here,
- 16:05Speaker 3: it's pristine. They don't know that, so what are they
- 16:08Speaker 3: going to do. They're going to heage on the side
- 16:11Speaker 3: of caution and give me a lesser figure because they
- 16:15Speaker 3: the only thing they said me was about a ten
- 16:17Speaker 3: question in there or that I filled out. And how
- 16:20Speaker 3: they know I'm telling you the truth. You know what
- 16:22Speaker 3: if they show up and I don't have that extra key,
- 16:26Speaker 3: but I've paid them the four hundred dollars to come
- 16:29Speaker 3: and get the car, and you're going to share a
- 16:31Speaker 3: lot of information with other people than myself because I
- 16:37Speaker 3: am semi retired. I am buying cars, keep my mind
- 16:40Speaker 3: occupied by sanity that have something to do. I enjoy it.
- 16:44Speaker 3: I'm pretty good at it, and I really enjoy meeting people.
- 16:48Speaker 3: And I left out here last month, and before I
- 16:52Speaker 3: got to the office, a gentleman heard me that. In
- 16:54Speaker 3: that following day, I was sitting in his living room
- 16:57Speaker 3: in Canas City buying his car. I remember his name,
- 17:01Speaker 3: and I have the copy of the check and that's
- 17:03Speaker 3: all the information I have, you know, and it's title.
- 17:06Speaker 3: I didn't share it with anyone. I didn't put it
- 17:08Speaker 3: on my computer system because there isn't one Nobody's going
- 17:11Speaker 3: to hike it it's just you're safe and instant gratification.
- 17:16Speaker 3: How much more instant gratification can you get? I mean
- 17:20Speaker 3: you and if you don't like my figure, you can
- 17:22Speaker 3: always say no. But let me tell you something about
- 17:24Speaker 3: these large companies comes in they use the pressure technique.
- 17:29Speaker 3: You've paid them, come to your house and now they're
- 17:32Speaker 3: going to start picking your car and offer you a
- 17:34Speaker 3: lesser amount. You know, they're building pressure on you. Just
- 17:37Speaker 3: you know, most people go, well, okay, you're here, and
- 17:43Speaker 3: it's they're going to find something wrong with that car,
- 17:48Speaker 3: especially the older car, the more age on a car.
- 17:52Speaker 3: And that's where I think I really excel at is
- 17:55Speaker 3: that if you're ten thousand dollars an under, they're not
- 18:00Speaker 3: won't beat me. If they're between ten and twenty, we're
- 18:03Speaker 3: going to be close. Twenty or thirty thousand in the
- 18:06Speaker 3: h they're probably they're going to be more than me.
- 18:09Speaker 3: They own an auto auction, so I watch people in
- 18:14Speaker 3: their selling of their automobiles. And you can go on
- 18:17Speaker 3: to the famous Facebook marketplace, which replaced the ad bulletin.
- 18:23Speaker 3: If you remember the ad bulletin that people loved twenty
- 18:27Speaker 3: years ago. But you are opening up so much information
- 18:31Speaker 3: to maybe they aren't potential buyers. Maybe there are potential
- 18:35Speaker 3: something else.
- 18:37Speaker 4: How do you know.
- 18:39Speaker 3: You put it all out there, so you know it
- 18:42Speaker 3: used to be i'd say, or buyer beware, it might
- 18:47Speaker 3: be seller beware.
- 18:47Speaker 4: Now.
- 18:48Speaker 2: Yeah, there's a lot. I mean, you're right about that.
- 18:50Speaker 2: There's a lot that goes on out there where people
- 18:52Speaker 2: scrape your data up off these things and they find
- 18:54Speaker 2: other ways to contact you for reasons that you that
- 18:58Speaker 2: you may not really want to be contact before, but
- 19:00Speaker 2: because they're marketing or whatever it is that they're scraping
- 19:04Speaker 2: that data for. Man. I mean, your information is just
- 19:06Speaker 2: always out there and people can buy it. Sometimes it's
- 19:09Speaker 2: incidentally exposed. I mean, there's all kinds of things, but
- 19:13Speaker 2: there aren't There's very few good faith actors anymore, which
- 19:15Speaker 2: is why what you do is so important. Because there's
- 19:17Speaker 2: so many bad faith actors out there. You have no
- 19:19Speaker 2: idea what you're getting yourself into. Half the time.
- 19:21Speaker 3: If you want to meet someone on a common ground,
- 19:25Speaker 3: if you have an automobile for sale, instead ofviting them
- 19:28Speaker 3: to your house and you live Saint Albans, Nitro, Hurricane Winfield, wherever,
- 19:34Speaker 3: asking meets you.
- 19:35Speaker 4: At the police station.
- 19:36Speaker 2: Yeah, right, yeah, sure.
- 19:38Speaker 3: They got cameras. Let's go down here to community center
- 19:42Speaker 3: meet them there, all right, and go through that glove box,
- 19:47Speaker 3: go through that center console, go through anything that might
- 19:50Speaker 3: have some information you would not like to share. And
- 19:56Speaker 3: it just takes you know, it doesn't take that long
- 19:58Speaker 3: to go through there. I have bought cars. Actually, I
- 20:02Speaker 3: bought a car about a month ago, and the lady
- 20:04Speaker 3: handed me the entire folder of all her information on
- 20:08Speaker 3: the car. She had to be, well, what's in safe keeping?
- 20:10Speaker 3: Because I shredded now I'm okay, And she was, you know,
- 20:18Speaker 3: a very lovely lady, and I went to her house
- 20:20Speaker 3: twiced and bought a car.
- 20:21Speaker 4: But that information does not need to be out.
- 20:23Speaker 3: To you didn't need it for anything, right, No, And
- 20:27Speaker 3: the next person does not need it, right, So she wasn't.
- 20:32Speaker 4: She doesn't know what I know.
- 20:33Speaker 2: So I shredded right right, which is a lot better
- 20:36Speaker 2: than just sticking on your computer somewhere or whatever. Even
- 20:42Speaker 2: physical copies canna get taken, you know, I mean, shredding
- 20:45Speaker 2: is very safe.
- 20:46Speaker 3: Well, when you buy a United States senator's car like
- 20:49Speaker 3: I have, and you look at their GPS and their
- 20:52Speaker 3: destination points, they leave it in there.
- 20:55Speaker 4: The first thing I did was removed.
- 20:57Speaker 2: All right. Now, A good thing you didn't pull the
- 20:59Speaker 2: data and try to because you probably could have this
- 21:02Speaker 2: day and age. Hey, let's do this. Let's take our break.

- 23:16Speaker 2: a hold of Larry for anything else, You're more than
- 23:18Speaker 2: welcome to do that this morning. One thing you mentioned
- 23:20Speaker 2: before we went to the break there where you were
- 23:22Speaker 2: talking about Facebook marketplaces kind of taking over the ad
- 23:26Speaker 2: the ad bulletin and specifically to cars. I remember, even
- 23:30Speaker 2: when I used to I wasn't even for a market
- 23:32Speaker 2: for a car. There was all kinds of community bulletins
- 23:34Speaker 2: that would have cars for sale. I would just pick
- 23:36Speaker 2: one up when I was bored, go back to the
- 23:37Speaker 2: house and not do anything else. You just kind of
- 23:39Speaker 2: leaf through it and be like, Wow, there's an Impala
- 23:41Speaker 2: for twenty five hundred dollars. That's a pretty good deal.
- 23:43Speaker 2: I mean, I mean it's not like you're going to
- 23:45Speaker 2: go buy it, but you would see like all these
- 23:46Speaker 2: deals out there's like, ah, you know, if I was
- 23:48Speaker 2: in the market, that's a pretty good deal.
- 23:49Speaker 5: Man.
- 23:49Speaker 2: That doesn't even exist anymore. Not only does the ad
- 23:52Speaker 2: bulletin not exist, but like leafing through something being like, oh, okay,
- 23:55Speaker 2: that's not bad. I mean most of the time it's
- 23:57Speaker 2: it's like, okay, well that's not quite a mortgage.
- 24:01Speaker 4: Was a dark You had a Slant six?
- 24:04Speaker 2: It was, indeed, he had two twenty five Slant six,
- 24:06Speaker 2: and that.
- 24:06Speaker 4: Bad boy have a ballast resistance.
- 24:08Speaker 2: It did. Indeed, Yes it did. Yeah, I had. There
- 24:10Speaker 2: was an old guy that looked at that thing when
- 24:12Speaker 2: I took it in for a service one time or
- 24:13Speaker 2: another and he popped the hood on it was looking
- 24:16Speaker 2: at the injury. He was like, you know, sn they
- 24:18Speaker 2: put these in tanks back in the day, and told
- 24:20Speaker 2: me all about the two twenty five Slant six.
- 24:23Speaker 3: Now, now, when Brake was talking about his first car
- 24:26Speaker 3: and he had a h which was a Chrystal product
- 24:29Speaker 3: of two twenty five Slat six. It was a six
- 24:31Speaker 3: cylinder motor, great motor and a ballast resistor supper on
- 24:34Speaker 3: a Fender whale and you never he gave you no
- 24:36Speaker 3: warning went it quit. Most people had one carried an
- 24:39Speaker 3: extra one in their glove compartment because it won't start
- 24:44Speaker 3: without that ballast resistor if it goes bad.
- 24:47Speaker 4: And he was talking.
- 24:48Speaker 3: About his power steering that you could almost move, you could.
- 24:51Speaker 4: Breathe on them.
- 24:52Speaker 2: Now it's just pinky steer.
- 24:54Speaker 3: If you remember they it was pirates cheering then become
- 24:57Speaker 3: power assisted steers. Yeah, because it could get away from
- 25:01Speaker 3: it over the old power steering. And I was also
- 25:03Speaker 3: telling Dell that I bought a truck yesterday and I
- 25:08Speaker 3: think I'm going to do some research, but I believe
- 25:11Speaker 3: it has electric power steering. And the reason I was
- 25:14Speaker 3: able to buy it because it does not work. In
- 25:17Speaker 3: other words, when I got in it and started up,
- 25:19Speaker 3: you can't turn that wheel. I mean, at least you're
- 25:22Speaker 3: muscle bout now you get it rolling, you can. And
- 25:24Speaker 3: I did a little bit of research and I called
- 25:27Speaker 3: back and I said, you know, I'll make you an offer,
- 25:29Speaker 3: because they were stumped with it too, and it's got
- 25:32Speaker 3: to be electrical Grimlin somewhere or a motor or somewhere.
- 25:35Speaker 3: When I say motor, electrical power, steering, motor and dalls
- 25:39Speaker 3: days they were hydraulic and it was running off the
- 25:43Speaker 3: serpentine belt or the fan belt, and then later on
- 25:48Speaker 3: they could start calling the serpentine belts because it was
- 25:50Speaker 3: about that reached from here to the parky lot that
- 25:52Speaker 3: intertwined through all those pulleys that if you dare took
- 25:56Speaker 3: it off, you butter make your little notation how to
- 25:59Speaker 3: put it by.
- 26:00Speaker 2: One of my greatest accomplishments with the Chilten Manual was
- 26:03Speaker 2: changing my serpentine belt one day. It took me all day, literally,
- 26:05Speaker 2: but I did it. I did it.
- 26:07Speaker 3: You probably had a idler pulley that attention pulley.
- 26:11Speaker 2: I got one.
- 26:11Speaker 3: Yeah, you got to kind of get on a pry
- 26:14Speaker 3: bar and have either a buddy hold it or you're
- 26:18Speaker 3: going to be really strong with one arm and be
- 26:20Speaker 3: able to do it with your next. And those were
- 26:23Speaker 3: the days of yesterday. But it's created. As I've said,
- 26:27Speaker 3: I like to learn things every day, and in the
- 26:30Speaker 3: automobile world, it's a change. And if we had this
- 26:33Speaker 3: conversation just right before COVID of how the automobile agencies
- 26:38Speaker 3: work and their display and their adversements and all that
- 26:42Speaker 3: it has changed just in that short period of time.
- 26:46Speaker 3: And it wasn't that long ago we were doing this
- 26:48Speaker 3: show me sitting on my couch because you know, I
- 26:50Speaker 3: couldn't come up here, and you think back and said,
- 26:53Speaker 3: how that.
- 26:53Speaker 4: Really all happen?
- 26:55Speaker 3: Well, we all went back to the drawing board and
- 26:57Speaker 3: scratched her head and said, we have to survive, have
- 27:00Speaker 3: to go forward. And if you you know, some people
- 27:03Speaker 3: doesn't like change. I adapt to change, maybe not as
- 27:08Speaker 3: as quick as I used to, because it's it's so
- 27:12Speaker 3: involved in computers and and things of that nature that
- 27:18Speaker 3: you know, I'm sixty eight. I have to ask a
- 27:21Speaker 3: lot of questions. I think I remember you saying it's
- 27:24Speaker 3: kind of moved past you, and ten years ago I
- 27:29Speaker 3: definitely said, you're the sharpest guy I knowing these things.
- 27:32Speaker 3: It's just everything's in moving, it's moving so fast, and
- 27:36Speaker 3: you know, communication and healthcare. I do watch how the
- 27:43Speaker 3: automobile world is advancing in their communications with the outside world.
- 27:50Speaker 3: As far as asking you know, call ins we used
- 27:54Speaker 3: in our old days, we call them ups. Now I
- 27:56Speaker 3: think they call them leads. And I was having discussed
- 28:00Speaker 3: discussion with my insurance agent, which ensures a lot a
- 28:04Speaker 3: lot of new cars and big dealerships and their leads
- 28:09Speaker 3: or ups is back in my day, they're not what
- 28:12Speaker 3: they once were. They're falling and the dealer realizes that. Well,
- 28:16Speaker 3: that's a perspective of a customer, and I don't know
- 28:20Speaker 3: how you tackle that. In the old days, you know,
- 28:22Speaker 3: we'd have a blowout sell and call you guys and
- 28:25Speaker 3: have a radio remote and create ups. Well, now they
- 28:29Speaker 3: work on leads, and that's a click on this phone,
- 28:33Speaker 3: that's a click on your laptop, it's a click on
- 28:36Speaker 3: your desktop, or it's a call in inquiry and you're
- 28:40Speaker 3: really not talking that Rosie that you thinks the secretary
- 28:44Speaker 3: is ai. Rosie doesn't exist. And frustration of the consumer
- 28:52Speaker 3: that's fifty sixty years old. I think the frustration level.
- 28:57Speaker 4: Has increased, no question. I fall in that category.
- 29:02Speaker 3: And you know, to call and make an appointment to
- 29:06Speaker 3: have your physical.
- 29:09Speaker 4: Like I do twas the year.
- 29:11Speaker 3: It can create frustration because in the old days they
- 29:14Speaker 3: used to mail me the results and then now they
- 29:18Speaker 3: you have to go on a computer and h M,
- 29:21Speaker 3: I Huntington internally, Hi MG changed the way they're doing
- 29:25Speaker 3: it and literally tell I don't have meltdowns. But I
- 29:31Speaker 3: was so frustrated I almost changed doctors. I could get
- 29:35Speaker 3: no one to help me create a password.
- 29:37Speaker 2: Oh boy, they just leave you on an island with
- 29:40Speaker 2: that stage. You know. Yeah, that's absolutely true.
- 29:42Speaker 3: And when I would go down and I'm a I
- 29:44Speaker 3: think I'm a pleasant fellow to be around, and I
- 29:46Speaker 3: would just I mean, I searched the entire complex down
- 29:51Speaker 3: at the twenty nine Street accent to to not get
- 29:56Speaker 3: really a result. One day I was I finally got it.
- 29:59Speaker 3: I just I do have a portal now. But it
- 30:02Speaker 3: took months, and I wasn't the only one complain it,
- 30:06Speaker 3: and I know I wasn't the older one that left.
- 30:10Speaker 3: And you know we all seek that one on one.
- 30:12Speaker 3: I mean, who do you really want to talk to
- 30:15Speaker 3: if you don't feel well?
- 30:17Speaker 4: Your doctor?
- 30:18Speaker 3: You don't tell them that you want to be able
- 30:20Speaker 3: to go to your doctor and you want to understand
- 30:23Speaker 3: all that. And it's getting not.
- 30:27Speaker 2: Easy even to go to the pharmacy. Now, the pharmacy
- 30:30Speaker 2: that I go that I go to, you have you
- 30:34Speaker 2: like you don't even talk to somebody to tell them
- 30:35Speaker 2: you want your medicine. You register, so you like walk
- 30:38Speaker 2: in and you like have to go through a screen
- 30:40Speaker 2: where you're typing your number and then you select which
- 30:42Speaker 2: patients in your household you're picking up medicine for. I mean,
- 30:44Speaker 2: it's it's like this administrative burden that has put on
- 30:47Speaker 2: me to do their paperwork for him, so they can
- 30:49Speaker 2: then ignore me and just you know, throw the medicine
- 30:51Speaker 2: out me and rush me out the door. Is basically
- 30:53Speaker 2: the way that it works. I hate that when I
- 30:56Speaker 2: go in to see my pharmacists. Now, I don't go
- 30:58Speaker 2: in and say, hey, I'm here to pick up medicine
- 30:59Speaker 2: for so, and do you have any question. It's all
- 31:01Speaker 2: handled on a screen and you know then if you
- 31:03Speaker 2: have a question, they will go get the pharmacists, who
- 31:04Speaker 2: you'll wait twenty minutes for to come and talk to you. Yeah,
- 31:07Speaker 2: it's okay to cross those medicines or whatever it is,
- 31:09Speaker 2: but it's like very difficult just to do things like
- 31:12Speaker 2: that as a as a fifty two year old now
- 31:14Speaker 2: that has an eighteen or an eighteen an eight year
- 31:17Speaker 2: old child, everything that she gets into she needs an
- 31:20Speaker 2: account for. You need a password for you need all
- 31:22Speaker 2: these different things for and of course she doesn't have
- 31:25Speaker 2: these things that are her own, so there are things
- 31:26Speaker 2: that I manage for her. So there's all these passwords
- 31:29Speaker 2: and things I have to remember for her to make
- 31:30Speaker 2: sure that things are age appropriate and different things like that.
- 31:33Speaker 2: The administrative burden that just your average person, your average
- 31:36Speaker 2: Joe has to do to do things for the businesses
- 31:39Speaker 2: out there is incredible. And they don't have any employees anymore,
- 31:42Speaker 2: so we do all the work for them. I mean,
- 31:43Speaker 2: that's basically the way that it works out. And it
- 31:45Speaker 2: is a lot. I mean it's hundreds of hours a
- 31:47Speaker 2: year for people on the administrative burdens that they have
- 31:50Speaker 2: to prove that they're human, remember their password, change their password,
- 31:54Speaker 2: all these different things that you have to do. It
- 31:56Speaker 2: is so frustrating.
- 31:58Speaker 3: Have a or line purchase of your car from across
- 32:04Speaker 3: the state line and they can come in and do
- 32:08Speaker 3: their paperwork and you have a payoff. They don't instantly
- 32:14Speaker 3: make that payoff. That money go or that paperwork will
- 32:18Speaker 3: go to a central area wherever their center center system
- 32:23Speaker 3: is and if that payoff is missed by one day,
- 32:29Speaker 3: oh you that that that they'll kick it back in
- 32:33Speaker 3: other words, they will not send a title, and they
- 32:36Speaker 3: also will send you a late notice. And it happens.
- 32:40Speaker 3: Now you have that problem, who do you call? You
- 32:45Speaker 3: find them on line. They're not gonna answer the thinge.
- 32:47Speaker 3: If you don't believe me, just go on and google
- 32:50Speaker 3: Carvana and you will read horror, terrible stories. And it's
- 32:56Speaker 3: not I think that they're that bad.
- 32:58Speaker 4: It's just the delay.
- 32:59Speaker 3: And the delay, well, we'll create that and if you
- 33:05Speaker 3: have an issue, we'll say, not even say a problem,
- 33:08Speaker 3: an issue. How do you communicate? It's all good when
- 33:12Speaker 3: it's good, but it's terrible when it's bad. And there's
- 33:17Speaker 3: where the distance.
- 33:19Speaker 4: Between one on one.
- 33:21Speaker 3: It's you know, your hometown lawyer, your hometown doctor, your
- 33:24Speaker 3: hometown car dealer, whatever. That's why they call him hometown. Kelly,
- 33:29Speaker 3: my secretary has been with me a long time. I
- 33:32Speaker 3: needed her to run to the back. Actually I needed
- 33:35Speaker 3: cash to pay a gentleman, and I said, will you
- 33:37Speaker 3: run down to the back and get this and I've
- 33:40Speaker 3: got to run over here, and when you're just she
- 33:42Speaker 3: and I we got it done. But that evening she
- 33:46Speaker 3: called me and she said, Larry, do you have that
- 33:49Speaker 3: envelope where I got.
- 33:51Speaker 4: You that cash.
- 33:52Speaker 3: I said, no, I paid the vendor I needed to pay,
- 33:56Speaker 3: and she was having a panic. She said, oh my god.
- 33:58Speaker 3: I said, well, what's wrong? She said, I want to
- 34:00Speaker 3: get grandma's She takes care of her grandmother that's ninety
- 34:04Speaker 3: some years old. And I went to pick her medicine up.
- 34:09Speaker 3: And I went to get my driver's license and I
- 34:12Speaker 3: didn't have them, and she said I had to show
- 34:15Speaker 3: them at the bank. So she said, I think they
- 34:17Speaker 3: put them at that envelope. Now, rewind this ten years ago,
- 34:21Speaker 3: when you had your hometown pharmacy, just who had got
- 34:24Speaker 3: the medicine wouldn't give up the medicine. Now there's not
- 34:30Speaker 3: a fault there, but there's a delay there because we
- 34:34Speaker 3: have distanced ourselves from reality and we're all dependent upon computers.
- 34:41Speaker 3: This thing that would not give the grandmother the medicine.
- 34:45Speaker 3: Now we were able the next day to retrieve the
- 34:48Speaker 3: driver's license and they were at the bank and they
- 34:51Speaker 3: follow the bank. She just forgot to slide it in
- 34:53Speaker 3: there and Kelly went and got it. But that medicine
- 34:56Speaker 3: was very important. And we've had an idea and I
- 35:01Speaker 3: don't think it's a narcotic, Okay, I believe it's just
- 35:04Speaker 3: state medicine, and there's where we're at today. Will you
- 35:07Speaker 3: take out In the automobile world, the frustration cause that
- 35:11Speaker 3: I get people asking me for advice, which is free,
- 35:15Speaker 3: is normally they're having a glitch trying to get something done,
- 35:19Speaker 3: and lots of times it's across state lines. And then
- 35:23Speaker 3: my answer I always say, why'd you do that?
- 35:27Speaker 2: Price?
- 35:29Speaker 4: Price?
- 35:31Speaker 3: So that price sometimes comes at a cost. I enjoy
- 35:35Speaker 3: listening to mister Payton or Tom on the talk radio
- 35:39Speaker 3: on Thursdays, and I admire him because he answers questions
- 35:44Speaker 3: is free and he'll invite them down if he has
- 35:47Speaker 3: to go a little bit further with it. Well, people
- 35:51Speaker 3: likes to ask questions, but they don't want to invade
- 35:54Speaker 3: up on someone and I think they feel obligated. And
- 35:57Speaker 3: now they're not obligated to me because I'm going to
- 35:59Speaker 3: sell are because I don't sell cars, you know, they
- 36:02Speaker 3: can come down and ask me all the questions they
- 36:03Speaker 3: want to. And I get asked a lot of questions
- 36:06Speaker 3: actually that I have a drastic uptick and people ask
- 36:09Speaker 3: me questions because they don't feel like the obligation. And
- 36:12Speaker 3: probably mister Peyton as well. He does a great job
- 36:15Speaker 3: on here and he answers questions and it's probably somebody remotely.
- 36:19Speaker 3: I've noticed that lots of times has to do with
- 36:21Speaker 3: a deed or death or something like that. But you
- 36:24Speaker 3: know what, God bless him for doing that, because there's
- 36:27Speaker 3: the older people need those questions answered and they feel comfortable,
- 36:31Speaker 3: and that's who calls me, just like Jeff gave the
- 36:33Speaker 3: lady my number, and thank thank the radio station for that.
- 36:37Speaker 3: And I believe I helped the lady because she was
- 36:40Speaker 3: uncertain but listened to me on the radio and thought
- 36:42Speaker 3: she could ask me some questions, and I answered them
- 36:46Speaker 3: the best I could. I was at home shaving, I
- 36:49Speaker 3: put my razor down and gave her some attention, only
- 36:52Speaker 3: to find out that my niece and her are best
- 36:55Speaker 3: of darned friends.
- 36:55Speaker 2: Ahwa, isn't that something else? Yes, you know, it's really
- 36:58Speaker 2: something else. I'm not. I don't with my position here,
- 37:02Speaker 2: I'm not always the first person people talk to when
- 37:04Speaker 2: they call the station. Well you know, that's usually a
- 37:07Speaker 2: couple of calls in. But the one thing that I
- 37:09Speaker 2: have noticed is, I mean I come up in kind
- 37:12Speaker 2: of an old school customer service background. Heck, I give
- 37:14Speaker 2: credit if I go all the way back. I'll give
- 37:17Speaker 2: some credit to AT and T. Back in the day
- 37:19Speaker 2: when I was in my young twenties, I worked for
- 37:22Speaker 2: them for a short amount of time. They put me
- 37:23Speaker 2: through a two week training period and a large portion
- 37:26Speaker 2: of that was customer service, like how to treat customers
- 37:29Speaker 2: and so forth. The enterprise did the same thing for
- 37:31Speaker 2: me when I work for them, and they give you
- 37:33Speaker 2: a good background on that stuff. It's amazing, just the
- 37:35Speaker 2: skills that are like kind of wrote to me that
- 37:37Speaker 2: I deploy when I talk to someone. People weren't used
- 37:40Speaker 2: to receiving that level of engagement just in general, like hey,
- 37:43Speaker 2: I'll follow up when you and give you a call back. Really,
- 37:45Speaker 2: and then when you do, they're like, I can't believe
- 37:47Speaker 2: you called me.
- 37:47Speaker 4: Were signing off.
- 37:48Speaker 2: Yeah, we're getting on next month.
- 37:50Speaker 4: I'm gonna tell you all. I'm gonna talk about it.
- 37:52Speaker 3: All Horse Parade ool that is in Buffalo, that I
- 37:56Speaker 3: sponsored the band down there, and I think it's the
- 37:58Speaker 3: nineteenth Melanie will correct me. I know she's less than
- 38:02Speaker 3: when I go down and get take her by band.
- 38:05Speaker 2: That's it. That will be the next time, Okay, that
- 38:07Speaker 2: will be the next time. On ask the expert with
- 38:10Speaker 2: Larry Dawson from Larry Dawson's Well. From Larry Dawson, he
