- Lucas: Welcome back to Learn Cantonese with Fexingo, I'm Lucas, and as always, Luna is here with me. Luna: Hey hey! So last time we were at the wet market, right? That was a lot of fun. Lucas: It was. And today, let's take a little break from shopping and go somewhere cozy — a classic Hong Kong cha chaan teng. Luna: Oh, I love cha chaan tengs. The food, the vibe, the noise... it's all part of the experience. Lucas: Exactly. And what's the one drink everyone gets there? Milk tea, of course. In Cantonese, it's 奶茶. Luna: 奶茶. That's milk tea, right? Lucas: Right. 奶 is milk, 茶 is tea. But there are two common ways to have it: hot and iced. Hot milk tea is 熱奶茶. Luna: 熱奶茶. Hot milk tea. And iced would be 凍奶茶. Lucas: Perfect. 凍 means cold or iced. So 凍奶茶 is iced milk tea. Let's say them together: 熱奶茶, 凍奶茶. Luna: 熱奶茶, 凍奶茶. I love the sound of that. 凍奶茶 sounds so refreshing. Lucas: It is. Now, when you're ordering, you might want to adjust the sweetness. The phrase for less sweet is 少甜. Luna: 少甜. So 少 means less, and 甜 is sweet. That's handy. Lucas: Exactly. So if you want an iced milk tea with less sugar, you'd say, 我想要一杯凍奶茶, 少甜. Luna: 我想要一杯凍奶茶, 少甜. That's a mouthful but I'll try. 我想要一杯凍奶茶, 少甜. Lucas: You got it. 一杯 is one cup, so you're saying 'I want one cup of iced milk tea, less sweet.' Luna: Nice. But what if I want to ask the other person what they want? Like, 'What about you?' Lucas: That's a great question. You can say 你呢？which means 'And you?' Luna: 你呢？So I could say, 我想要一杯凍奶茶, 少甜. 你呢？ Lucas: Exactly. That's perfect for when you're ordering with friends. Now let's put it all in a tiny scene. Imagine we're at a cha chaan teng. The waiter asks us what we want. Luna: Okay, I'm ready. I'll order first. Lucas: Go for it. You say: 我想要一杯凍奶茶, 少甜. Luna: 我想要一杯凍奶茶, 少甜. Lucas: Perfect. Then I'll say, 我想要一杯熱奶茶. 你呢？Wait, I should ask you first. So I'll say, 我想要一杯熱奶茶. 你呢？ Luna: That works. So we're both ordering tea. I like it. You're ready to order like a local. Just remember, when you're at a cha chaan teng, don't be shy to ask for what you want. And if you want it extra sweet, you can say 多甜, but that's for another day.
