- 0:07Speaker 1: When you see those birds, you know it's time for
- 0:10Speaker 1: another edition of Cardinal Territory. Jim Hay is alongside Lance
- 0:15Speaker 1: Lynn and Kyle Gibson. A lot to get to on
- 0:19Speaker 1: this edition. But Kyle, if you don't mind, Lance had
- 0:22Speaker 1: a problem traveling, and I'd like to get the story
- 0:25Speaker 1: because there was bad weather in New York and he
- 0:28Speaker 1: had to spend a lot of time at the airport.
- 0:31Speaker 1: And because I care not just about the show, what
- 0:34Speaker 1: about you two and met holidays individuals. I would like
- 0:38Speaker 1: to hear Lance's story.
- 0:41Speaker 2: Oh you know, it's a lovely, beautiful New York snow day.
- 0:46Speaker 2: You know, you wake up on Sunday morning, You're like, man,
- 0:48Speaker 2: we've got an early flight. We had a beautiful you know,
- 0:51Speaker 2: we got to see the rockets. Mama Mia, the kids
- 0:54Speaker 2: loved it. Wife loved it. Everybody's happy. Snowing. It's knowing
- 1:00Speaker 2: so bad. How you can't even see city Field from LaGuardia,
- 1:03Speaker 2: That's how bad it is. You know you came and
- 1:05Speaker 2: see it across there. So yeah, so we sat there
- 1:09Speaker 2: from we sat there from six am to five pm,
- 1:15Speaker 2: just hoping our fight didn't get canceled because there was
- 1:17Speaker 2: probably half the flights got canceled that morning, and they
- 1:20Speaker 2: just kept pushing back. I saw, I saw Jeff Mathis
- 1:23Speaker 2: of all people in the airport with his family. They
- 1:25Speaker 2: did the same. Yeah, it was you know, it was
- 1:30Speaker 2: just like a little reunion in the airport.
- 1:32Speaker 1: You know.
- 1:32Speaker 2: But you know we were salomon it in the sky club,
- 1:35Speaker 2: so we weren't hurting by any means.
- 1:37Speaker 3: So you know, so so buts I got to go
- 1:41Speaker 3: to the sky club, got it naturally.
- 1:43Speaker 2: Yeah. So yeah, if you want to see former teammates
- 1:45Speaker 2: in or in New York Airport LaGuardia, it's going to
- 1:49Speaker 2: be in the sky Club or you or you're not
- 1:50Speaker 2: going to see it. So yeah, so just a good
- 1:53Speaker 2: old fashioned sky club day, you know, tough, tough tickets
- 1:56Speaker 2: for the kids. Uh, you know, they had to travel tough.
- 1:59Speaker 2: So the only thing would have been better is if
- 2:01Speaker 2: we went privately. I don't think we would have got
- 2:03Speaker 2: out of either. So part of the gig this time
- 2:06Speaker 2: of year in New York, you know that you got
- 2:08Speaker 2: to deal with the weather.
- 2:09Speaker 1: Kyle Ky Club membership.
- 2:12Speaker 3: No, no, Jim, I think Lan's going to have answered
- 2:14Speaker 3: that right off the rip. We don't have that clear.
- 2:17Speaker 2: Hey, if he did as a bragg because I know that.
- 2:22Speaker 3: Yeah, we talked about clear and tsa pre check, you know,
- 2:27Speaker 3: last time. So I think Jim is that's kind of
- 2:30Speaker 3: where we're at. You know, you're in the sky club.
- 2:32Speaker 3: I'm in Clear, Jim is going to be in Clear.
- 2:34Speaker 2: You know.
- 2:35Speaker 3: It's we're in three different three different areas there.
- 2:38Speaker 1: No question about it. Well, the Cardinals did make a move.
- 2:42Speaker 1: They signed Dustin May to a one year free agent contract.
- 2:47Speaker 1: Twenty eight year old right hander seven and eleven last
- 2:50Speaker 1: year between the Dodgers and the Red Sox. You're eight
- 2:53Speaker 1: four point nine to six on the positive side over
- 2:56Speaker 1: one hundred and thirty two innings pitch, which is a
- 2:59Speaker 1: major high for him. Electric stuff earlier in his career,
- 3:03Speaker 1: no question about that. But the problem has been injuries,
- 3:07Speaker 1: he said Tommy John. Then he had the extra Tommy
- 3:11Speaker 1: John to fix the earlier Tommy John. He said, forearm.
- 3:15Speaker 1: He had an esophagus tear that cost him a lot
- 3:18Speaker 1: of time after he choked on a piece of lettuce.
- 3:23Speaker 1: So the talent is there. My opinion is this is
- 3:27Speaker 1: a no brainer. It's a low risk, one year deal,
- 3:30Speaker 1: high reward because this guy at his best is really
- 3:33Speaker 1: really good. And he appears to be healthy now. So Kyle,
- 3:36Speaker 1: you're nodding, I'm gonna start with you. How do you
- 3:38Speaker 1: look at this move?
- 3:41Speaker 3: Yeah? I like it a lot. I think he's a
- 3:44Speaker 3: guy that, like you said, has the upside with that
- 3:49Speaker 3: electric stuff. I think he can end up being somebody
- 3:52Speaker 3: that is a game changer for the rotation if he
- 3:56Speaker 3: has another full season. I haven't looked at his outliers
- 4:00Speaker 3: and kind of the advanced numbers to see, you know,
- 4:02Speaker 3: maybe what that fIF is. Maybe he had a couple
- 4:04Speaker 3: outings in that one hundred and thirty innings that you know,
- 4:07Speaker 3: inflated that era a little bit, but nearly a strikeout. Parenting,
- 4:12Speaker 3: He's got some funk to his delivery, throws hard, and
- 4:15Speaker 3: I'm trying to remember the most recent injury here last
- 4:18Speaker 3: year was that his first full season off of that
- 4:21Speaker 3: most recent tom of John. So I think that the
- 4:24Speaker 3: farther you get away from that, I think the better
- 4:26Speaker 3: he's going to be.
- 4:29Speaker 1: For him in there, too, Lance, what are your thoughts.
- 4:33Speaker 2: Like positive? Kyle said, you're looking at young with good stuff,
- 4:37Speaker 2: low risk because the one year you know he's got
- 4:40Speaker 2: a you know, high spin sweeper, you know, great sinker,
- 4:43Speaker 2: the strikeouts are there could even be more with this
- 4:47Speaker 2: stuff he has. That's something for Dusty to play with.
- 4:50Speaker 2: And uh so here's the here's the negative. I think
- 4:53Speaker 2: that you look at it, it's like, man, he threw
- 4:54Speaker 2: one hundred and thirty two innings and that's the most ever.
- 4:56Speaker 2: But as as Kyle was talking about, you're looking at
- 4:59Speaker 2: his probably is really a second full year of actually
- 5:03Speaker 2: pitching away from the last Tommy John. I think that's
- 5:06Speaker 2: when you kind of hit your stride. You look at
- 5:08Speaker 2: the age. The age is in a good spot. He's
- 5:11Speaker 2: trending in the direction of Hey, you know, if it's
- 5:13Speaker 2: one hundred and thirty innings now it's one hundred and fifty,
- 5:16Speaker 2: maybe one hundred and sixty. And the note that I
- 5:20Speaker 2: had on him and from get go, I gotta spend
- 5:22Speaker 2: a little time with him in LA when he was
- 5:23Speaker 2: dealing with all the injuries. He's a great guy. Everybody
- 5:26Speaker 2: loves him, and he comes from a World Series pedigree, really,
- 5:30Speaker 2: and you're looking at a rotation that needs somebody that
- 5:34Speaker 2: has been in situations done it. Obviously, he's you know,
- 5:38Speaker 2: could have been in more with health, but you're looking
- 5:40Speaker 2: at a guy who's been in a championship organization, has
- 5:44Speaker 2: been taught how to do a lot of different things.
- 5:46Speaker 2: When it comes to pitching, the way that the Dodgers
- 5:48Speaker 2: teach pitching could be really huge for some of these
- 5:51Speaker 2: younger pitchers. I mean, heck younger that he's only like
- 5:54Speaker 2: two years older than all these guys because he's only
- 5:56Speaker 2: twenty eight years old. But his ability to maybe community
- 6:00Speaker 2: with those guys and stuff like that, it's going to
- 6:02Speaker 2: be huge for a young group trying to establish themselves.
- 6:06Speaker 2: And he's still trying to establish himself, but he's still
- 6:08Speaker 2: still had success, especially in the playoffs and stuff like that,
- 6:11Speaker 2: and has a couple of world serious strings to show
- 6:13Speaker 2: for it being a part of a good organization in
- 6:15Speaker 2: La So I think all in all, it's gonna be
- 6:17Speaker 2: a good a good spot for him.
- 6:19Speaker 1: He's a ginger, I want to point that out. And
- 6:22Speaker 1: also kind of when there's a guy who was like
- 6:25Speaker 1: considered like the future for the Dodgers, right, and then
- 6:29Speaker 1: the injuries you know, getting away, and then there's one
- 6:32Speaker 1: then there's something inside each professional athlete, especially a guy
- 6:36Speaker 1: is lance point that has performed at a high level,
- 6:39Speaker 1: there's that hunger to get back there isn't there.
- 6:42Speaker 3: Yeah, for sure. I think injuries are something that easily
- 6:46Speaker 3: eat it's at you as is I think, you know,
- 6:49Speaker 3: poor performance. You know, I think, yeah, he's gonna want
- 6:55Speaker 3: to go out there and and at least to himself,
- 6:58Speaker 3: even say, man, another full season, I know I can
- 7:01Speaker 3: pitch even better. I know I can feel even better
- 7:05Speaker 3: going to a great city, to live in a great ballpark,
- 7:09Speaker 3: to pitch in a team that you know he probably
- 7:11Speaker 3: has the ability to, you know, like Lance said, and
- 7:14Speaker 3: be that veteran, be the guy that you know, kind
- 7:17Speaker 3: of leads a pitching staff maybe for the first time ever,
- 7:20Speaker 3: which I know for me that was pretty exciting. That
- 7:23Speaker 3: was an interesting, uh dynamic. When I got you know,
- 7:26Speaker 3: signed with Baltimore in twenty twenty three, was figuring out
- 7:28Speaker 3: all right, now I can kind of put into work
- 7:30Speaker 3: here what Lance has ingrained him in the last three
- 7:33Speaker 3: years of being with him. So hopefully he enjoys that.
- 7:36Speaker 3: Hopefully that's something that you know, he can run with,
- 7:38Speaker 3: and you know, I think he's really gonna like it
- 7:41Speaker 3: in Saint Louis, and I think this is what we've
- 7:43Speaker 3: talked about the last couple of shows here. I feel
- 7:45Speaker 3: like is find these guys that have the ability to
- 7:48Speaker 3: make your players better as they get better and as
- 7:51Speaker 3: you feel like you can help them. And then if
- 7:54Speaker 3: you end up being a playoff team, which I think
- 7:56Speaker 3: they can, you keep him and you go the full year,
- 7:59Speaker 3: and now you're like, man, he just got lightning in
- 8:00Speaker 3: a bottle. If he throws really well and the team struggles,
- 8:04Speaker 3: he's a guy that you can trade away. And I'm
- 8:06Speaker 3: sure that's gonna be part of the understanding going into this.
- 8:10Speaker 1: And either way, it's a one year deal, which is
- 8:12Speaker 1: really a no brainer. And Lance, looked back on your
- 8:15Speaker 1: own career, I think twenty eight is like the ideal
- 8:19Speaker 1: age for a pitcher, especially if he can put those
- 8:22Speaker 1: injuries in the rear view mirror.
- 8:25Speaker 2: Yeah, and like I said, he was brought up in
- 8:27Speaker 2: an organization. He knows how to pitch, and he's when
- 8:29Speaker 2: he's been on the field, he's been really good before injuries.
- 8:33Speaker 2: Last year was your Like, people don't realize that first
- 8:37Speaker 2: like full year of getting back the ins and outs
- 8:40Speaker 2: of how your elbow feels and the things you have
- 8:43Speaker 2: to deal with because he hadn't pitched in what two
- 8:46Speaker 2: years at that point give or take. You know, he's
- 8:49Speaker 2: had some spots here there where he's been healthy, but
- 8:51Speaker 2: he hasn't had time to really get his feet under him.
- 8:55Speaker 2: He had to go through some ups and downs last year.
- 8:57Speaker 2: You're gonna have Indians and you're gonna have days when
- 8:59Speaker 2: you just don't have stuff because you haven't been able
- 9:02Speaker 2: to navigate a season. It's a similar thing that we're
- 9:06Speaker 2: talking about Libby. Last year it was his first full
- 9:08Speaker 2: season doing it right. This has been his first full
- 9:12Speaker 2: season in a long time doing it. You have to
- 9:13Speaker 2: relearn who you are, and I think he still knows
- 9:16Speaker 2: he's got this stuff to do it. Now that confidence
- 9:18Speaker 2: is going to come because he was able to put
- 9:20Speaker 2: those Indians under his belt, and then he's gonna be
- 9:22Speaker 2: able to throw on top of the things that he
- 9:24Speaker 2: was able to learn from the Kershaws of the world
- 9:26Speaker 2: and the Dodgers of the world to be able to
- 9:28Speaker 2: not only pass those along but really start putting into
- 9:31Speaker 2: his game and said of hey, I just need to
- 9:32Speaker 2: figure out how to make my next start. Now it's
- 9:34Speaker 2: how can I get better from my last one? Because
- 9:36Speaker 2: I know how to get ready for my next one.
- 9:39Speaker 1: And you mentioned Libby, who should be at the front
- 9:42Speaker 1: of the cardinal rotation. I just wrote down some names.
- 9:45Speaker 1: McGreevy may maybe Richard fitz is in there, Lay who
- 9:51Speaker 1: I think is definite, and Ollie Marmel really high on
- 9:54Speaker 1: Lay the starter. I think that'll pan out. You got Polante,
- 9:59Speaker 1: you got Quinn Matthews, maybe hence so Kyle. As it
- 10:03Speaker 1: sits now, and obviously there could be pieces added, how
- 10:07Speaker 1: do you look at the rotation? Who do you think
- 10:10Speaker 1: in the starting five in.
- 10:12Speaker 2: That group go need one more? They need one more,
- 10:16Speaker 2: need two more, maybe three. I get one for sure,
- 10:18Speaker 2: I get one for sure, and it's a guy that
- 10:20Speaker 2: might have a little bit more. I know I'm gonna
- 10:23Speaker 2: get twenty five to thirty and one hundred and forty
- 10:25Speaker 2: to one hundred and sixty out of you.
- 10:28Speaker 1: I agree, probably a move to be made. But as
- 10:30Speaker 1: it sits right now, of the names I mentioned with
- 10:34Speaker 1: the asterisk that there could be another one, how do
- 10:36Speaker 1: you see the rotation for the first five, Because I'll
- 10:40Speaker 1: put the stipulation on there. You could go in with
- 10:43Speaker 1: six seven starters during spring training and say, okay, we
- 10:46Speaker 1: have pieces to back us up, and in most years
- 10:49Speaker 1: it's never enough. But as it sits now, how do
- 10:52Speaker 1: you see it either one of you guys.
- 10:56Speaker 3: I see it as early in the season, you have
- 11:00Speaker 3: quite a few off days built in, so a six
- 11:02Speaker 3: man rotation probably doesn't make sense. What I see early though,
- 11:08Speaker 3: especially with young guys, is maybe the ability everybody goes
- 11:12Speaker 3: that first couple starts and you're kind of limited pitches
- 11:15Speaker 3: just because maybe you're in cold weather. Maybe you know
- 11:18Speaker 3: you didn't get quite to one hundred pitches in spring training,
- 11:21Speaker 3: so they want to make sure they're building up that
- 11:23Speaker 3: endurance still. So I can kind of see a situation where,
- 11:26Speaker 3: especially with these young guys and guys that you want
- 11:28Speaker 3: to get experienced, Let's figure out which two or three
- 11:32Speaker 3: of these guys match up to go on the same day,
- 11:35Speaker 3: spread them out a couple of days, and you're not
- 11:37Speaker 3: doing a bullpen day, but you've got well, just I'm
- 11:40Speaker 3: gonna throw Quinn, Matthews and kink Kins out there. Those
- 11:43Speaker 3: two guys are going Game four, right, So it's going
- 11:47Speaker 3: to be after an off day. You know your bullpen
- 11:50Speaker 3: is gonna hopefully get a little bit of a break.
- 11:52Speaker 3: Let's not wear the bullpen out, give them two days off. Piggyback.
- 11:55Speaker 3: You know, destiny doesn't need to be a piggyback. He's
- 11:58Speaker 3: full go. But if you don't, don't sign another guy
- 12:02Speaker 3: that can get you the one forty or one sixty.
- 12:03Speaker 3: And I know Lance has a guy in mine probably
- 12:05Speaker 3: who could sign. If you don't get that guy, then
- 12:08Speaker 3: I think you go with six or seven of them.
- 12:11Speaker 3: Probably saves you from maybe needing to add a bullpen
- 12:13Speaker 3: arm and you say, hey, we're gonna protect you guys,
- 12:16Speaker 3: but we want you to get major league experienced right now.
- 12:19Speaker 3: And we think that you know, you can uh speed
- 12:23Speaker 3: up development if you're getting big lead hitters out matching
- 12:27Speaker 3: a guy with lehi, I think is smarter. He's throwing
- 12:30Speaker 3: what maybe one hundred innings in his big league career,
- 12:32Speaker 3: Like you get just thrown out the five days. He's
- 12:35Speaker 3: not going to go one hundred and fifteen hundred and
- 12:36Speaker 3: sixty innings. So either I think you go with a
- 12:39Speaker 3: six man later on, or you just start with seven
- 12:42Speaker 3: of these guys up here and you piggyback them and
- 12:44Speaker 3: let him get as many innings as possible.
- 12:47Speaker 1: Give us the name Lance.
- 12:49Speaker 2: The first thing that pops in my mind is is Gilda.
- 12:52Speaker 2: I think that he's in a proven phase of his career,
- 12:55Speaker 2: and I say this because I know him personally and
- 12:58Speaker 2: I know how he is in the game. He's very
- 13:01Speaker 2: sunny gray like in his ability to speak pitching, help pitching,
- 13:06Speaker 2: but he also posts him and he also knows the
- 13:10Speaker 2: you know, his ability to do the homework and all
- 13:13Speaker 2: these things that some of these young guys are going
- 13:15Speaker 2: to have to learn not only on their own but
- 13:18Speaker 2: through a coach. But it's easier to learn it from
- 13:21Speaker 2: a guy who's done it and done it at a
- 13:23Speaker 2: high level. And I think Gildo has the ability to
- 13:26Speaker 2: speak the language that's needed for some of these young
- 13:29Speaker 2: guys to take on these roles that they're going to
- 13:32Speaker 2: be given. And he you know, and he's had to
- 13:34Speaker 2: do it through that his time in UH Chicago before
- 13:38Speaker 2: I got there, and he had to learn a lot
- 13:40Speaker 2: of these things on his own, and then you know,
- 13:42Speaker 2: he was able to keep year by year building and
- 13:44Speaker 2: that's what these guys are trying to do at the
- 13:46Speaker 2: big bigue level. As Kyle was saying, is Hey, you know,
- 13:48Speaker 2: if we have three to four guys that are there,
- 13:51Speaker 2: and then we have four guys that we can say, hey,
- 13:54Speaker 2: you're going five and you're finishing it today, and we're
- 13:56Speaker 2: we're like that's kind of our thought process, because if
- 13:59Speaker 2: you get multiple innings under your belt, two to three
- 14:02Speaker 2: at a time, that's going to not only build confidence,
- 14:05Speaker 2: it's not gonna get you exposed as much, but it's
- 14:07Speaker 2: also going to give you a chance to actually work
- 14:09Speaker 2: through some things. You can go anybody can go out
- 14:11Speaker 2: there and get three outs with two pitches and good
- 14:13Speaker 2: stuff when they've never seen you, and they've got guys
- 14:15Speaker 2: that can do that. But how are we gonna get
- 14:17Speaker 2: through the lineup one time? Okay, we figured out how
- 14:19Speaker 2: to do that, and now we're gonna get through the
- 14:20Speaker 2: liamp this second time? And how are we going to
- 14:22Speaker 2: manage ups and downs and multiple innings and these guys
- 14:26Speaker 2: seeing us more And we're gonna have to be able
- 14:28Speaker 2: to change on the fly. And that comes with being
- 14:30Speaker 2: able to do it having guys around that can teach
- 14:31Speaker 2: you to do it too.
- 14:33Speaker 1: Intriguing stuff, you know. The name Brendan Donovan has drawn
- 14:37Speaker 1: interest from pretty much every team around Major League Baseball now,
- 14:42Speaker 1: at least according to reports, two teams have emerged as
- 14:46Speaker 1: the front runner to trade for Brendan Donovan. We'll look
- 14:49Speaker 1: at that when we come back from break. You are
- 14:51Speaker 1: watching Cardinal Territory.
- 14:55Speaker 4: For all the parents out there with teenagers like crats,

- 15:56Speaker 1: Cash app is a nice app in fact, have you
- 15:59Speaker 1: guys had it? Might text you and say, can I
- 16:02Speaker 1: bar a few dollars because I can't get into sky
- 16:04Speaker 1: Club and I don't even have clear yet. Before the break,
- 16:08Speaker 1: I was mentioning Brendan Donovan. Everybody likes Brendan Donovan. No
- 16:12Speaker 1: one wants to see Brendan Donovan traded, but him is
- 16:16Speaker 1: doing a reset which made you have to part with pieces.
- 16:19Speaker 1: You're probably not happy to do so, but you want
- 16:22Speaker 1: prospects in return. And according to a report in The Athletic,
- 16:27Speaker 1: the front runners now for the services of Brendan Donovan
- 16:32Speaker 1: or the Mariners and the Giants. Both teams have plenty
- 16:36Speaker 1: of prospects that they could possibly deal. Kyle, is there
- 16:41Speaker 1: a better fit in your in your view for Brendan Donovant?
- 16:46Speaker 3: Yeah, Saint Louis utility players. So I don't want to
- 16:55Speaker 3: see him go anywhere. I mean, if I'm being if
- 16:58Speaker 3: I'm saying this selfishly with my pitching coach and amazing
- 17:04Speaker 3: baseball mentor Tony Vitello at the Helm in San Francisco,
- 17:07Speaker 3: Sure go to San Francisco because Brendan Donovan is a
- 17:10Speaker 3: Tony Vytello player. He is gonna love that guy, But
- 17:15Speaker 3: the best fit is the Cardinals. That's that's just where
- 17:19Speaker 3: it is.
- 17:21Speaker 2: What do you think, Lance, No, I'm in a totally agreeance.
- 17:25Speaker 2: I hear a reset, right, you hear the reset saying
- 17:27Speaker 2: this guy is not like he's over thirty years old
- 17:30Speaker 2: and you know, on the wrong side of thirty as
- 17:33Speaker 2: they call it. So like, in my opinion, he's a
- 17:36Speaker 2: guy that hey, he's part of the now and the
- 17:40Speaker 2: after the reset, like he's this we're doing a year
- 17:42Speaker 2: reset and then we've got Donovan for another three after
- 17:45Speaker 2: that because I'm giving him a four or five year deal.
- 17:48Speaker 2: But if you're gonna sit here and say, hey, which
- 17:50Speaker 2: one do you like? Mark? Does he fit in San
- 17:53Speaker 2: fran Yes, he fits anywhere. That's the best part about
- 17:56Speaker 2: it because that's why he's a good player and everybody
- 17:58Speaker 2: wants him. Here's my thing is, if you're going to
- 18:01Speaker 2: get him, you better get something worthwhile for him. And
- 18:04Speaker 2: it doesn't need to be three double A players that
- 18:07Speaker 2: might not ever make it. If I'm trading him away,
- 18:09Speaker 2: I need Bryce Miller or somebody like that from from
- 18:13Speaker 2: Seattle that I know I can plug and play as
- 18:15Speaker 2: my I've got May Miller, Libby All of a sudden.
- 18:18Speaker 2: Now I can summach it if that makes sense. But
- 18:21Speaker 2: if I'm not, if I'm getting a this guy was
- 18:24Speaker 2: in Double A, this guy was in Double A, this
- 18:26Speaker 2: guy is in high A, Hi A, and they're all
- 18:28Speaker 2: top twenty prospects. Who cares? That doesn't That doesn't make
- 18:33Speaker 2: my team better. It doesn't make my It doesn't make
- 18:36Speaker 2: it doesn't make anyone better on the Cardinals because it
- 18:39Speaker 2: doesn't make who any of the guys that are there
- 18:43Speaker 2: right now. It doesn't make them better when they come
- 18:45Speaker 2: up by losing Donnie. Donnie's a guy that you say, hey,
- 18:49Speaker 2: he's the in my opinion, he's the next Matt Carpenter. Hey,
- 18:52Speaker 2: here's five year deal. You're our guy, and it's going
- 18:56Speaker 2: to be you. Mason. I even like Newt in that
- 18:59Speaker 2: in that situation, and then JJ Weatherhaak can kind of
- 19:02Speaker 2: come as he goes with it too. That's my opinion.
- 19:05Speaker 2: But if you're trading, you better get you better get
- 19:08Speaker 2: a guy that's big league ready and that you can say,
- 19:10Speaker 2: here's what we got for him, and he's worth you know,
- 19:13Speaker 2: the upsides really high.
- 19:16Speaker 1: I was looking at some of the prospects that both
- 19:19Speaker 1: teams have and to be honest, you can see a
- 19:22Speaker 1: clip here and there, but it's hard to judge lance.
- 19:25Speaker 1: As you point out, when you're dealing with guys at
- 19:27Speaker 1: the low levels of the miners, it's still a crapshoot,
- 19:30Speaker 1: even if they project out to be good Major leaguers.
- 19:34Speaker 1: But one guy that I found interesting. The Mariners have
- 19:39Speaker 1: a prospect twenty two year old Jerangelo Sindja, who was
- 19:42Speaker 1: a switch pitcher, I mean legitimately a switch pitcher, Kyle,
- 19:47Speaker 1: you ever heard of that before?
- 19:49Speaker 3: Absolutely? Pat Van Diddi Creighton Blue Jays played against him
- 19:54Speaker 3: in college, and I think he actually made it to
- 19:56Speaker 3: the big leagues. He either made it to the Biggers
- 19:58Speaker 3: or made a higher pay pro ball.
- 20:00Speaker 2: Uh I think for a minute.
- 20:02Speaker 3: Yeah, crazy, You see a six finger glove out there,
- 20:06Speaker 3: and you're like, is that is that regulation size? What's
- 20:09Speaker 3: going on out there?
- 20:10Speaker 1: Uh?
- 20:11Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean it's it was interesting.
- 20:12Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 20:13Speaker 3: I don't know much about him, Jim, but I if
- 20:18Speaker 3: I had to pick between the two, obviously I'm taking
- 20:20Speaker 3: a guy that I know is going to be a
- 20:23Speaker 3: staple with controllable big league experience. I look at what
- 20:27Speaker 3: the Angels and the Orioles do with Grayson Rodriguez and
- 20:30Speaker 3: Taylor Ward, and I'm saying, you tell me who's a
- 20:33Speaker 3: more valuable player over the next you know, however, many
- 20:36Speaker 3: years of control, either Taylor Word or Brendan Donovan. And
- 20:38Speaker 3: I think everybody's taking Brendan Donovan. So get me a
- 20:41Speaker 3: guy like that that you know makes the other side
- 20:45Speaker 3: of the trade comparable, you know, on the pitching side,
- 20:49Speaker 3: that's where I'm That's where I'm looking at. But sure,
- 20:52Speaker 3: does the switch pitcher start or is.
- 20:54Speaker 2: He a reliever?
- 20:54Speaker 3: What do we got here, Jim?
- 20:55Speaker 4: I mean.
- 20:58Speaker 3: Prospect?
- 20:58Speaker 1: He switched, so maybe there's an upside to him being
- 21:02Speaker 1: a two way switch it at both positions. I didn't
- 21:05Speaker 1: do that deep a dive. I just found that interesting.
- 21:08Speaker 1: But Lance, there is something to be said for if
- 21:11Speaker 1: you're doing a reset right, and as him has pointed out,
- 21:15Speaker 1: they want to be competitive and look toward the present.
- 21:18Speaker 1: Give the fans some to be excited about. But the
- 21:21Speaker 1: best way to do that, because the biggest currency in
- 21:24Speaker 1: Major League Baseball is a controllable talent. Is stockpiling controllable
- 21:30Speaker 1: talent and building from there. You understand that.
- 21:35Speaker 2: Yeah, I understand what the concept is, but isn't that
- 21:38Speaker 2: what we've been doing since the trade deadline last year.
- 21:41Speaker 2: How many high AAA guys do we need to get
- 21:43Speaker 2: to stockpile the farm system Now. I need to see
- 21:46Speaker 2: something that we're getting back ready for big league players,
- 21:50Speaker 2: especially for guys who are not on expiring contracts or
- 21:53Speaker 2: not over the age of thirty. Then you're looking at, hey, okay,
- 21:56Speaker 2: you should be able to get multiple big league ready
- 21:58Speaker 2: players that should be on your opening A roster next year.
- 22:01Speaker 2: For a guy like Donovan, a guy like new those
- 22:04Speaker 2: guys should be big league ready players that should impact
- 22:07Speaker 2: your team next year for losing a guy like that.
- 22:10Speaker 2: That's my opinion. I understand the prospects, but we got
- 22:13Speaker 2: four low A guys in the last two trades that
- 22:17Speaker 2: we might not ever see right, So it's time to
- 22:20Speaker 2: start getting guys that we know kind of who they are.
- 22:23Speaker 2: Instead of oh, well he could be this, he could
- 22:25Speaker 2: be that. Well, it's like, no, you're getting rid of
- 22:28Speaker 2: a All Star. You're getting rid of you know, a
- 22:33Speaker 2: you know, floor in New that is a very good
- 22:36Speaker 2: or a good major league player could be a printing
- 22:39Speaker 2: All Star of health and some things go better his way,
- 22:43Speaker 2: and then next thing, you know, hey, I want to
- 22:45Speaker 2: see what I'm getting back now, because that's if they're
- 22:48Speaker 2: in double A or if they're in triple A, you
- 22:50Speaker 2: know what you're getting. If they got a cup of coffee,
- 22:53Speaker 2: you've got a good idea, you've got a book on them.
- 22:55Speaker 2: But these high A guys and stuff like that, you
- 22:56Speaker 2: have no idea what they're going to be. And I
- 22:59Speaker 2: think it's risky as much as it's, oh, you need
- 23:01Speaker 2: all these prospects, it's very risky to get a bunch
- 23:03Speaker 2: of loway hey guys, because you really don't know who
- 23:07Speaker 2: how they're even going to mature enough to even handle,
- 23:10Speaker 2: you know, being a major leaguer, because you don't even
- 23:12Speaker 2: know what they're what they're like mentally.
- 23:14Speaker 1: Yet quite well taken. One of the little news tidbits
- 23:20Speaker 1: could tell Marte has a no trade, but he has
- 23:23Speaker 1: some teams he's willing to accept the trade. The Cardinals
- 23:27Speaker 1: are on that list. Wilson Contreras has a no trade.
- 23:31Speaker 1: Supposedly he's willing to discuss possible trade locations. We've already
- 23:36Speaker 1: done that. So I'm gonna ask you, guys, you're a
- 23:40Speaker 1: major leaguer, Kyle with a no trade, what do you
- 23:43Speaker 1: think some of the things you're looking at in terms
- 23:46Speaker 1: of what would be a good landing spot for me
- 23:49Speaker 1: and my family.
- 23:52Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean if you're looking, if you're looking family wise,
- 23:55Speaker 3: then you know you're calling around, talking to people that
- 23:58Speaker 3: you know around the league and see and that's somewhere
- 24:01Speaker 3: you want to live seeing if it's you know, probably
- 24:05Speaker 3: not asking about the family and probably not asking about
- 24:07Speaker 3: stuff off the field as much for that, but you're
- 24:10Speaker 3: trying to look at it a little bit as a
- 24:12Speaker 3: free agent saying, Okay, what part of the country don't
- 24:15Speaker 3: don't I want to go to? What type of what
- 24:18Speaker 3: type of market do I not want to go to?
- 24:23Speaker 3: Hitting wise, if you're a hitter, what kind of field
- 24:25Speaker 3: do you not want to play on?
- 24:26Speaker 2: Yes?
- 24:26Speaker 3: Do you want to play on? Maybe he's looking at
- 24:28Speaker 3: opportunity to play, doesn't want to switch positions. I think
- 24:31Speaker 3: there's probably a lot that goes into that.
- 24:33Speaker 1: How about you, Lance, And this is our last thing,
- 24:37Speaker 1: lance Lynn has a note trade, but they want to
- 24:40Speaker 1: trade them. What are you looking at, Lance?
- 24:43Speaker 2: Well, I have I have fortunately lifted a no trade
- 24:46Speaker 2: in my in my in my day. So you look
- 24:50Speaker 2: at a lot of different variables. It starts with putting
- 24:53Speaker 2: the list together, right. My note trade was full of
- 24:56Speaker 2: teams that I thought would trade for me, so I
- 24:58Speaker 2: can control things, maybe even a new contract. Like there
- 25:01Speaker 2: was more said than that, I didn't put teams that
- 25:03Speaker 2: on there were bad because I didn't plan on pitching,
- 25:06Speaker 2: and bad enough to where I would get traded to
- 25:08Speaker 2: those teams. And I was making too much money for
- 25:10Speaker 2: those teams to even take me. So my thought was,
- 25:13Speaker 2: all right, I'm gonna put all the teams on there
- 25:15Speaker 2: that I know that we'll be looking to add a
- 25:18Speaker 2: veteran starter and aren't afraid of the money, and then
- 25:20Speaker 2: I can control the market on where I'm going to
- 25:22Speaker 2: go and what I can do. And that was my
- 25:25Speaker 2: mindset and the no trade, and then I lifted it
- 25:28Speaker 2: to LA. There's I would say, most every team on
- 25:33Speaker 2: my no trade a year I left Chicago I would
- 25:37Speaker 2: have went to So it was one of those things
- 25:39Speaker 2: where I had a ten team no trade, but I
- 25:41Speaker 2: picked at ten teams that I thought were going to
- 25:43Speaker 2: be in the playoffs so I can control where I
- 25:45Speaker 2: was going to go. I wasn't worried about the pirates.
- 25:48Speaker 2: I was not playing, and everyone's like, oh, what if
- 25:51Speaker 2: you would have got traded somewhere you didn't want to
- 25:53Speaker 2: go that wasn't in the playoffs. I was simple. Kyle's
- 25:56Speaker 2: heard this before. I'll just take my ass home if
- 25:58Speaker 2: I don't want to go there, I'm not worried about
- 26:00Speaker 2: you always have a no trade jam if you don't
- 26:02Speaker 2: give a damn what people think.
- 26:05Speaker 1: That's awesome, that is awesome. That's gonna do it for this.
- 26:09Speaker 2: I was there. I was there when I pulled. I
- 26:11Speaker 2: had a no trade in Texas without a no trade, So.
- 26:16Speaker 1: You don't need a no trade to have a no trade.
- 26:18Speaker 3: Will never I will never forget those conversations like, well,
- 26:21Speaker 3: what if you go here? It's like, I'm not going there.
- 26:23Speaker 3: What do you mean go there? I don't have no trade.
- 26:26Speaker 3: I've got a no trade. Everyone's gonna what Yeah? And
- 26:31Speaker 3: I used that. I used that no trade with no
- 26:33Speaker 3: trade in Texas is great.
- 26:35Speaker 1: Well, you also got to be sitting on a nice
- 26:36Speaker 1: bag as the kids saying, no, you like that, Kyle?
- 26:39Speaker 2: Uh?
- 26:39Speaker 1: Because trade.
- 26:43Speaker 2: In the show one bag, We'll get you.
- 26:47Speaker 1: I's gonna do it for this edition of Cardinal Territory.
- 26:50Speaker 1: If you're watching on YouTube, go ahead like and subscribe.
- 26:53Speaker 1: If you're listening to us on a podcast, give us
- 26:56Speaker 1: some of the five stars. Uh do it for the guys.
- 26:59Speaker 1: They're they're likable, and their knowledgeable. That's gonna do it
- 27:02Speaker 1: for this episode. We'll see you next time. Hopefully that
- 27:05Speaker 1: episode won't suck.
- 27:08Speaker 4: M m m m hm hmmm mmm mmmm
