Latest / Suze Orman's Women & Money (And Everyone Smart Enough To Listen) / Don’t Be Afraid of The Future
Transcript
- 0:08Suze: February 1st, 2026. Welcome everybody to the Women in Money podcast,
- 0:15Suze: as well as everybody smart enough to listen. And today is,
- 0:20Suze: I guess it's Suze School. Maybe it's Suze Story.
- 0:25Suze: Maybe it's just Suze, who knows? But hopefully you'll listen
- 0:30Suze: and get something out of it. But I just want
- 0:33Suze: to tell you a little thing.
- 0:35Suze: Yesterday, I was in my studio, and as you know,
- 0:39Suze: we moved from the island, we sold the island and
- 0:43Suze: we moved back to Florida. And by the way, I
- 0:46Suze: keep having to tell all of you, Colo is great.
- 0:50Suze: He's doing fine. Doesn't matter how many times I say
- 0:54Suze: it on this podcast, it's like you don't believe me,
- 0:57Suze: so you keep writing it in. I'm telling you, he's listening. Colo,
- 1:01Suze: I know you listen every single Podcast.
- 1:04Suze: Tell everybody, you and Annie are doing great. OK. However,
- 1:11Suze: because we've moved back here, I've been so trying to
- 1:14Suze: get my studio together here in Florida, and it's very
- 1:19Suze: different than it was on the island because on the
- 1:21Suze: island I had this little room and I turned it
- 1:24Suze: into a soundproof room and it was just so easy
- 1:27Suze: to go in there and do TV and everything, the
- 1:30Suze: lights were set up perfect.
- 1:33Suze: Here, we don't have a little space like that, and
- 1:36Suze: the only place I can do it is we turn
- 1:38Suze: the second bedroom into the podcast studio and the TV studio,
- 1:44Suze: but it has windows and sun pours in, and it
- 1:48Suze: becomes very difficult to do cameras or anything. So, every
- 1:52Suze: day I've been trying to figure it out.
- 1:56Suze: And so yesterday, KT came in as I was trying
- 2:00Suze: to figure out what I was going to do today
- 2:03Suze: for all of you, and she kind of sat down
- 2:06Suze: and I had the camera going just to see what
- 2:10Suze: it looked like and could it be arranged that maybe
- 2:13Suze: we could ever do a podcast with both of us
- 2:16Suze: on the video. And so we pushed the button and
- 2:20Suze: we just recorded something.
- 2:22Suze: We don't have makeup on. We weren't ready to do this,
- 2:26Suze: nothing like that, and it was cute. So I'm gonna
- 2:29Suze: post it today. Do not tell KT cause she will
- 2:33Suze: absolutely kill me. But anyway, take a look at it.
- 2:38Suze: I think you'll enjoy it. We're gonna post it, by
- 2:40Suze: the way, on the Women and Money Community app on
- 2:44Suze: the wall there. I don't think it's quite ready for
- 2:46Suze: real prime time yet, but I think all the community members,
- 2:50Suze: I think you'll enjoy it.
- 2:52Suze: And you'll see what we really look like. OK, now, anyway.
- 2:58Suze: Today's podcast.
- 3:01Suze: You know, I want to say we live in a
- 3:05Suze: time and a place, where everything just seems so uncertain.
- 3:13Suze: So upside down. So going back to the past when
- 3:20Suze: so many things were just not equal. Women have been
- 3:24Suze: losing their rights. We've gone backwards there now. We have
- 3:28Suze: all kinds of discrimination throughout the United States and honest
- 3:32Suze: to God,
- 3:34Suze: it feels like we are going back to the days
- 3:39Suze: before really the United States experienced freedom for all.
- 3:45Suze: And I just can't even begin to tell you how
- 3:48Suze: much that upsets me, and I know it upsets all
- 3:51Suze: of you. There is no way that any of you
- 3:55Suze: can look and watch on television and see everything that's
- 3:58Suze: happening out there. You just can't. There's gotta be a
- 4:03Suze: different way to do it.
- 4:06Suze: And when uncertainty happens like that, and you add to
- 4:12Suze: that uncertainty... Are we going to have tariffs or are
- 4:15Suze: we not?
- 4:17Suze: Are interest rates going to go down, or are they not?
- 4:21Suze: Is the stock market going to go up, or is
- 4:24Suze: it gonna go down?
- 4:27Suze: And everybody is absolutely freaked out. Bitcoin, is Bitcoin gonna
- 4:34Suze: continue to go down, or is it gonna go back up?
- 4:38Suze: What are these things going to do?
- 4:42Suze: And what's interesting about all of that is that if
- 4:46Suze: you think about everything I just talked about.
- 4:50Suze: Stocks, even real estate, Bitcoin, all these things are controlled
- 4:58Suze: by people, people who are buying, people who are selling.
- 5:04Suze: And right now the fear barometer is so high, it's
- 5:10Suze: not even funny. It's like everything that's going on in
- 5:13Suze: the world, Venezuela, Iran, Ukraine, all this stuff, Israel still.
- 5:21Suze: All this stuff has seeped into the fabric of who
- 5:26Suze: we are as human beings, and it's very, very difficult
- 5:32Suze: to make a rational decision when you are coming from
- 5:37Suze: a place of fear.
- 5:39Suze: Which is why just a little bit ago I did
- 5:42Suze: a podcast on that. But it's even more than fear. It's,
- 5:48Suze: it's confusion. It's not knowing how do you solve these problems,
- 5:54Suze: especially when you're not even the one in most cases
- 5:59Suze: that are creating them, even though there's all this confusion
- 6:03Suze: out there and this, all these messages that don't make
- 6:06Suze: any sense if you ask me.
- 6:08Suze: The truth of the matter is you can't afford to
- 6:14Suze: be confused.
- 6:16Suze: You can't afford not to do what you need to
- 6:20Suze: do with your money and just block out all the
- 6:24Suze: noise that's out there. And I'm starting to want to
- 6:27Suze: just throw things at the TV when I hear some
- 6:31Suze: of these pundits go on CNBC and everything and say:
- 6:36Suze: "Gonna be an AI bubble. Yeah, everything's gonna go down considerably..."
- 6:42Suze: And they keep saying it, and they keep saying it,
- 6:45Suze: and they keep saying it, and yeah, a lot of
- 6:48Suze: these stocks have taken a serious hit.
- 6:52Suze: But aren't all of you that are invested in the
- 6:56Suze: stock market, aren't all of you invested with money that
- 7:01Suze: you are not going to need for at least five
- 7:05Suze: or 10 years or longer? Wasn't that the deal that
- 7:08Suze: we made for money that is in the stock market?
- 7:12Suze: And why did we make that deal?
- 7:15Suze: It's because of course things go up and up and
- 7:19Suze: up and then of course things go down and down
- 7:23Suze: and down and then they go right back up again
- 7:29Suze: but you need time for that to happen and if
- 7:33Suze: you just are investing and you're simply doing this thing
- 7:38Suze: where
- 7:39Suze: Oh, I was doing so great. Everything was up so much.
- 7:42Suze: Oh my God, I can't believe it, and now it's down,
- 7:45Suze: and now you're depressed or you don't know what to do.
- 7:48Suze: You are probably making serious mistakes, and what are the
- 7:54Suze: serious mistakes that you're making is you don't continue to
- 7:58Suze: dollar cost average into the stocks that you know are strong,
- 8:04Suze: you know they have a future, you know it.
- 8:08Suze: But yet you now have been scared to make any moves.
- 8:13Suze: Do you know that over the past 40 years, and
- 8:18Suze: I'm going to give you these numbers because I really
- 8:21Suze: want you to understand them.
- 8:24Suze: Because history has now proven that it does repeat itself
- 8:29Suze: and so many of you, even though you've been purchasing
- 8:33Suze: individual stocks, the advice really was purchase individual stocks to
- 8:38Suze: get a little bit more of a return. But there's
- 8:41Suze: nothing wrong with having 50% of your money in the
- 8:44Suze: Standard and Poor's 500 index. Do you remember us talking
- 8:48Suze: about that? Can you get out your little Suze notebooks?
- 8:52Suze: Can you do that for me?
- 8:54Suze: Do you know that out of the past 40 years
- 8:59Suze: since 1985, so we'll just go through 2025...
- 9:05Suze: That there were only seven years out of the past
- 9:10Suze: 40 years, OK.
- 9:14Suze: So, 33 of those years, the S&P 500 went up,
- 9:21Suze: seven of those years, the S&P 500 went down. Now,
- 9:27Suze: do you think that the odds are with you or not?
- 9:31Suze: You know, and I'm just gonna read these figures for you.
- 9:34Suze: In fact, here's what I'm gonna do. I'm gonna put
- 9:37Suze: a little picture on the Women and Money Community app
- 9:42Suze: and I will show you the returns of 1985 all
- 9:48Suze: the way through 2025 per year.
- 9:52Suze: And when you look at those, and you look at
- 9:55Suze: the 33 years that went up, and the seven years
- 9:59Suze: that went down,
- 10:02Suze: and you know that you have at least five years
- 10:07Suze: or longer till you need this money, because when I
- 10:11Suze: look at these numbers, so rather than giving you the numbers,
- 10:15Suze: I'm just gonna go up and down, all right? Starting
- 10:17Suze: in 1985, up, up, up, up, up, down.
- 10:22Suze: Up, up, up, up, up, up, up, up, up, down, down, down,
- 10:27Suze: see why you need five or 10 years or longer
- 10:30Suze: then up, up, up, up, up, down, up up up
- 10:33Suze: up up up up up up down up up up
- 10:38Suze: down up up up.
- 10:42Suze: Do you see that?
- 10:43Suze: So, let's just say that it is a down year
- 10:47Suze: this year. I don't think it's gonna be, but let's
- 10:50Suze: just say it is, and maybe next year. These are
- 10:54Suze: the years that you continue to invest in the things
- 10:58Suze: that you wanna own, and if you don't know what
- 11:00Suze: you want to own, all right, just buy the Standard
- 11:02Suze: and Poor's 500 index ETF. Fine.
- 11:06Suze: But over the long run you're going to have, if
- 11:10Suze: history does repeat itself, more up years taking away the
- 11:16Suze: down years, and you've got to have that in mind now.
- 11:22Suze: One of the reasons that I'm so aggravated about people
- 11:27Suze: thinking that AI is in a bubble, have you not
- 11:31Suze: also heard me say to you?
- 11:34Suze: You have to invest in the future.
- 11:37Suze: You have to have the ability at least to kind
- 11:40Suze: of look and see where we are going and how
- 11:45Suze: AI semiconductors, all kinds of things are going to rule
- 11:51Suze: as time goes on. So you have to not be
- 11:56Suze: afraid of the future.
- 11:59Suze: And I was trying to think to myself, how do
- 12:02Suze: I really get it across how AI and semiconductors and
- 12:09Suze: everything that's going on is so far beyond truthfully, chat
- 12:14Suze: GPT and this and that and all those things that
- 12:18Suze: it's going to change everything in our lives.
- 12:23Suze: And the one way that I thought I could talk
- 12:25Suze: about it in terms of how it's going to change
- 12:29Suze: your life, every one of our lives, is by talking
- 12:34Suze: about AVs. Do you happen to know what an AV is?
- 12:39Suze: An AV is an autonomous vehicle.
- 12:43Suze: A vehicle that will absolutely drive itself.
- 12:48Suze: The level 5, it's called, the robotaxi, you see them
- 12:52Suze: sometimes in San Francisco or wherever, and you get in
- 12:55Suze: and it takes you to where you wanna go, no
- 12:59Suze: driver at all.
- 13:01Suze: So just put a pin in that for a second,
- 13:05Suze: and let's go back to the year 1910.
- 13:10Suze: And do you know in 1910 when the car was
- 13:14Suze: first being developed that there were 130,000 horses in New
- 13:20Suze: York City. Do you know that? And do you know
- 13:23Suze: that by 1920 there were only 56,000 horses.
- 13:29Suze: And do you know that a lot of the people
- 13:31Suze: that rode those horses and everything, I'm sure, thought that
- 13:35Suze: it was going to always be the only mode of
- 13:38Suze: transportation to get from A to Z or wherever you
- 13:42Suze: wanted to go.
- 13:44Suze: And then all of a sudden, everything started to change, seriously.
- 13:50Suze: You know, there were like stables and carriage houses and
- 13:53Suze: all kinds of things, and they totally disappeared.
- 13:57Suze: And they were replaced with gas stations and dealerships and
- 14:02Suze: everything started to spring up everywhere and then we were
- 14:06Suze: able to travel and everybody drove themselves and in the
- 14:12Suze: same way, believe it or not, we've gone from horses
- 14:17Suze: to driving cars ourselves. The next step is we're gonna
- 14:22Suze: have cars that really will drive themselves.
- 14:27Suze: So, what does this have to do with the future
- 14:30Suze: and investing in AI? Well, I'll tell you what it
- 14:35Suze: has to do.
- 14:36Suze: The amount of technology for a level 5 car to
- 14:43Suze: absolutely drive itself and do everything is so much grander
- 14:50Suze: and greater than what a car today that will park
- 14:54Suze: itself and do all those things it takes. It will
- 14:57Suze: take seven times more of all the technology, the brain power,
- 15:03Suze: the GPS, all of that.
- 15:05Suze: Than what's called a level 2 car today, which is
- 15:08Suze: a car that will park itself and with you in it,
- 15:12Suze: drive around.
- 15:14Suze: That's why there will be such an extraordinary need for semiconductors, AI,
- 15:22Suze: and all the things that everybody's telling you is in
- 15:26Suze: a bubble, because it's not just cars, everybody, it's going
- 15:32Suze: to be all kinds of things. I want you to
- 15:35Suze: think about this.
- 15:37Suze: It's gonna be farming equipment, mining equipment, the long haul truckers.
- 15:44Suze: You're gonna see trucks going down the road all by themselves,
- 15:48Suze: all these military applications, everything. Obviously it's gonna reduce the
- 15:55Suze: need for labor and all of that, OK, but it's
- 15:59Suze: going to require so much AI it's not going to
- 16:05Suze: be funny.
- 16:07Suze: And therefore, this is not an area that by any
- 16:12Suze: level that you can turn your back on.
- 16:16Suze: So, semiconductors and software and AI all of that is
- 16:22Suze: the foundation of the future.
- 16:26Suze: So, it is impossible for it to be in a bubble. Now,
- 16:30Suze: it is not impossible that some of those stocks are
- 16:34Suze: going to go down dramatically. A lot of those stocks
- 16:37Suze: are investing billions of dollars to do things. So, all right,
- 16:42Suze: they may go down, they may go up, they may
- 16:45Suze: go all over the place, but in the long run,
- 16:49Suze: the reason that I'm telling you all this is I
- 16:52Suze: can sense that you are freaked when you see certain
- 16:56Suze: stocks going down dramatically 30%, 40%, and the more they
- 17:03Suze: go down rather than you dollar cost averaging into them,
- 17:07Suze: rather than you being smart, rather than you taking control
- 17:12Suze: over the confusion that is in this world right now.
- 17:15Suze: You are becoming part of that confusion, and you are selling.
- 17:20Suze: You are selling because you have lost faith in the
- 17:23Suze: picture and the future and the long run of what
- 17:27Suze: is probable, not what is possible, but what is probable.
- 17:33Suze: So, I am asking all of you, as long as
- 17:37Suze: you have five, 10, 15 years or longer to have your money invested.
- 17:45Suze: To just stay calm.
- 17:47Suze: To continue to dollar cost average, to be in the
- 17:51Suze: areas of the market along with the overall market, the
- 17:55Suze: Standard and Poor's 500, and just continue to participate in
- 18:01Suze: what's going on out there now. All right, everybody.
- 18:06Suze: Now with that said, I get it. I get it.
- 18:10Suze: Believe me, I have many stocks, serious positions in many
- 18:16Suze: of these stocks.
- 18:19Suze: And, OK, they go down.
- 18:22Suze: And either I dollar cost average into them, or I'm
- 18:26Suze: just holding them.
- 18:29Suze: I want you to remember, given that tax season is
- 18:32Suze: just around the corner, that a lot of you purchased
- 18:36Suze: these stocks as they were going up and up and up.
- 18:39Suze: You have not held them for at least a year.
- 18:43Suze: So for those of you that do have gains and
- 18:47Suze: you're selling now, that's going to be taxed to you
- 18:49Suze: as ordinary income, that will be an absolute loss to
- 18:54Suze: you at that point in time.
- 18:56Suze: So, if you have gains, and you have held longer
- 18:59Suze: than a year, and you wanna reduce your position cause
- 19:02Suze: you have a lot or whatever, and you just wanna
- 19:05Suze: do that, and it allows you to sleep at night.
- 19:08Suze: The goal of money is for you to be secure
- 19:09Suze: and sleep, OK, do that.
- 19:14Suze: But, if they're good quality stocks, if there's stocks that
- 19:18Suze: participate in the future, you have the S&P 500.
- 19:24Suze: If I were you, I would be holding on. However,
- 19:30Suze: there's more to investing than just the futuristic things of
- 19:35Suze: AI and semiconductors and so on.
- 19:38Suze: There are things that all of you really are putting
- 19:41Suze: a lot of money in, and I do just want
- 19:44Suze: to caution you from doing so.
- 19:47Suze: Thursday's podcast, one of the questions was about Barrick Gold
- 19:52Suze: and how I recommended it back in, I think it
- 19:54Suze: was June of 2022 at 18, went up to 53
- 19:59Suze: or 54, came back down on Friday, 4 or 5 points,
- 20:03Suze: quite a bit, but still, you write me and you say,
- 20:07Suze: why aren't you talking and telling people to invest in
- 20:10Suze: gold more?
- 20:11Suze: Can't you see, Suze, what's happening to the dollar, 'cause
- 20:15Suze: it's true. The dollar is getting weaker and weaker and weaker.
- 20:20Suze: But I just want to say something about gold here.
- 20:25Suze: Gold has had a tremendous run.
- 20:29Suze: And when gold runs as fast as it has run,
- 20:34Suze: I would be very skeptical at this point in time
- 20:38Suze: in terms of adding a whole lot of gold to
- 20:42Suze: my portfolio. You know, I don't necessarily believe in owning
- 20:47Suze: the actual commodity itself, and I mentioned on Thursday, as
- 20:51Suze: I've mentioned for a long time now, if you want
- 20:54Suze: to buy gold and participate, OK, buy the ETF GLD.
- 20:59Suze: But I am just saying to you, just be careful
- 21:04Suze: here because I think more is at play with gold
- 21:07Suze: than you have any idea. All right. In terms of
- 21:12Suze: the weak dollar, concerns me a little bit, concerns me
- 21:17Suze: because I always thought the United States wanted a strong
- 21:21Suze: dollar policy, but I don't think the United States has
- 21:24Suze: any clue what they're doing one way or the other
- 21:25Suze: right now because nobody can agree on anything.
- 21:29Suze: So again, we don't want to be part of that confusion.
- 21:32Suze: Just understand how a weak dollar will affect you only truthfully.
- 21:40Suze: On a personal level right now, if you are traveling,
- 21:44Suze: like if you're going over to Europe, if you're doing
- 21:47Suze: things like that, it will be far more expensive for
- 21:51Suze: you right now because of the exchange rates. So just
- 21:56Suze: keep that in mind, but I wouldn't be too worried
- 21:59Suze: about it if I were you. Bitcoin, yes, it has
- 22:03Suze: come down quite a bit, hasn't it? However,
- 22:08Suze: I'm still saying, all right, I don't care. I still
- 22:12Suze: have faith in Bitcoin long run. I'm not putting any
- 22:16Suze: more money into it. I have very little. I have
- 22:19Suze: it via the ETF, by the way, IBIT, and another
- 22:22Suze: one that pays a nice little dividend, but I still
- 22:25Suze: want to just stick with IBIT for all of you.
- 22:28Suze: A little exposure,
- 22:31Suze: great, but you might have to wait years or a
- 22:34Suze: while now. Know that if it doesn't hold right around
- 22:38Suze: this 88,000 area and close there over the next few
- 22:42Suze: days or whatever, it's very probable you'll see it go
- 22:45Suze: down to 69,000 or whatever, which is actually what it
- 22:49Suze: was around two years ago for the Super Bowl, and
- 22:53Suze: then it went all the way up, and now it's
- 22:55Suze: all the way back down again. See, we have a
- 22:56Suze: trend here.
- 22:58Suze: But don't freak about it. None of you should have
- 23:01Suze: all of your money in Bitcoin. None of you should
- 23:04Suze: have all of your money in gold. None of you
- 23:08Suze: should have those types of investments being a large part
- 23:13Suze: of your portfolio. I would not have it be more
- 23:17Suze: than 5% of a portfolio, and even that may be
- 23:20Suze: a lot for many of you. So it too has
- 23:24Suze: to go through its cycle.
- 23:26Suze: I think that it's very probable that the last half
- 23:29Suze: of February we'll see these markets rally, but who knows.
- 23:34Suze: And the reason that nobody can know anymore is because
- 23:36Suze: of the confusion out there. So we're now back to
- 23:39Suze: where I started the podcast.
- 23:42Suze: We have to get a handle on what's happening in Minnesota,
- 23:47Suze: what's happening throughout the United States. We have to get
- 23:51Suze: a handle and have our stories be right and not
- 23:56Suze: have one politician say something and then another politician say
- 24:00Suze: something else. We have to be on the same train
- 24:04Suze: going in the same direction so that we all get there.
- 24:09Suze: Confusion causes disruption. Disruption in your own stability causes you
- 24:17Suze: to do things like selling when you should be buying
- 24:20Suze: and buying when you should be selling, and therefore, the
- 24:25Suze: markets can be crazy for a while here.
- 24:28Suze: So, don't be one of those investors where you want
- 24:34Suze: how it was last year. It went up and up
- 24:36Suze: and up and up and up and up and up.
- 24:39Suze: Be one of those investors, where you have the understanding
- 24:44Suze: that when something goes up, something goes down, something goes up,
- 24:48Suze: it's building a foundation.
- 24:51Suze: A foundation under it to make it stronger for its
- 24:56Suze: next leg up in whatever those good stocks may happen
- 25:01Suze: to be.
- 25:04Suze: All right.
- 25:06Suze: Don't forget to go to the Women and Money app.
- 25:08Suze: You can get it on Google Play or Apple Apps
- 25:11Suze: to see the little video, the little video I'm gonna
- 25:14Suze: put up. It's only like maybe a minute long.
- 25:17Suze: But you'll see KT is so dang cute I can't
- 25:21Suze: even stand it. This afternoon, February 1st, we're all going
- 25:27Suze: to my brother-in-law Tom Stender's 75th birthday. His birthday really
- 25:33Suze: isn't until February 11th, but we're all going today. His
- 25:37Suze: kids came in. They surprised him, so the whole family
- 25:41Suze: is here.
- 25:42Suze: And what's funny is we're going to a little restaurant
- 25:45Suze: called Mai Kai, which is this like tropical Hawaiian place,
- 25:49Suze: and it's like 35 degrees here in Florida. So, Tom, happy,
- 25:55Suze: happy birthday, my dear brother-in-law.
- 25:59Suze: I hope you know what an extraordinary human being you are,
- 26:04Suze: and I hope you never ever forget that. But until
- 26:08Suze: Thursday when Miss Travis does join us for another Ask
- 26:12Suze: KT and Suze Anything.
- 26:14Suze: There's really only one thing that I want you to remember,
- 26:16Suze: and it's this people first, then money, then things, and
- 26:22Suze: you stay autonomous with your money and stay safe. Bye-bye now.
