- 0:00Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, good afternoon. Thanks for coming. You know,
- 0:04Speaker 1: recap a little bit of Saturday's game. You know, I
- 0:06Speaker 1: don't feel too terribly different than what I felt after
- 0:08Speaker 1: the game on Saturday. You know, very good team, I thought.
- 0:12Speaker 1: Played against some elite quarterback play in the third quarter there.
- 0:15Speaker 1: Guy hit 11-11-11 passes in the third quarter, I believe,
- 0:17Speaker 1: and only missed one in the whole second half. So,
- 0:20Speaker 1: you know, I think our guys battled for the most
- 0:22Speaker 1: part in all three phases. We have a lot to
- 0:25Speaker 1: clean up and a lot to, you know, fix schematically and,
- 0:29Speaker 1: you know, certainly some of the mistakes that were made,
- 0:31Speaker 1: but I think from an effort standpoint, you know, I'm not,
- 0:33Speaker 1: I'm not disappointed in that part of it at all.
- 0:35Speaker 1: So we head into this week, got to handle our
- 0:37Speaker 1: first road trip, you know, coach Anderson, Southern Miss, I mean,
- 0:41Speaker 1: very familiar there, played him a couple of times when
- 0:42Speaker 1: he was at Arkansas state, you know, Joe Bolden, the
- 0:45Speaker 1: defensive coordinator, there's brother Daniel played for me at Toledo,
- 0:49Speaker 1: very familiar with him and their family, you know, and,
- 0:53Speaker 1: I think it's Hampton, the quarterback, played against him when
- 0:55Speaker 1: he was at Northern Illinois. We've got some familiarity with
- 0:58Speaker 1: guys there, and they've done a good job in dealing
- 1:01Speaker 1: with some of the issues, having a program for the
- 1:04Speaker 1: first year that we're going through as well.
- 1:05Speaker 2: So I know it'll be a stiff challenge.
- 1:08Speaker 1: They'll play really, really hard, and we've got to go
- 1:10Speaker 1: handle a road environment that I think will be a
- 1:11Speaker 1: good one. So that being said, I'll take your questions.
- 1:18Speaker 3: Coach, I think you've said that. teams make their biggest
- 1:21Speaker 3: improvement between the first game and the second, the score notwithstanding,
- 1:25Speaker 3: what improvements did you see between the first and second game?
- 1:29Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, I think that, you know, they forced
- 1:33Speaker 1: us into some mistakes and we missed some blocks. We
- 1:37Speaker 1: missed some runs where we had creases and we didn't
- 1:39Speaker 1: hit the seams. We, you know, we're just hair off
- 1:42Speaker 1: on some of our throws offensively. But good teams will
- 1:45Speaker 1: force you to make some of those mistakes. That's a
- 1:48Speaker 1: big front. I mean, it's a, you know, that's a
- 1:50Speaker 1: big 10 defensive front. And, um, you know, that, that's a,
- 1:53Speaker 1: that's a, that's a little different ask than playing Lafayette
- 1:55Speaker 1: and that's no disrespect to Lafayette. So, um, I think that,
- 2:00Speaker 1: you know, you, you can see improvement if you really
- 2:02Speaker 1: pay attention to the tape in a lot of areas,
- 2:05Speaker 1: is it just going to look like we're so much
- 2:07Speaker 1: better than week two than week one in totality based
- 2:09Speaker 1: off the opponent, I think has a lot to do
- 2:11Speaker 1: with that. Um, you know, but I still believe that,
- 2:14Speaker 1: you know, we're, improvement is a must, right? I mean,
- 2:17Speaker 1: we got to have continuous improvement in how we practice
- 2:21Speaker 1: and what the operation of that looks like. I thought
- 2:22Speaker 1: some guys from an attitude and effort standpoint, you know,
- 2:25Speaker 1: maybe they're a little too high going into the game
- 2:27Speaker 1: on Saturday. Some of them maybe thought it was going
- 2:30Speaker 1: to be a little bit easier than maybe what it was.
- 2:32Speaker 1: And some other guys are right in that sweet spot
- 2:34Speaker 1: where you really, really want them to be. The key is,
- 2:36Speaker 1: is can we, you know, can we get that into
- 2:38Speaker 1: that sweet spot each and every week and figure out
- 2:40Speaker 1: how to bottle that up and then reproduce that when
- 2:42Speaker 1: the ball's kicked off. And you know, look, that's a
- 2:44Speaker 1: challenge of every coach in America that's going through the
- 2:46Speaker 1: same thing right now. So not any different than anybody
- 2:49Speaker 1: else's locker room. But yeah, I think some areas and
- 2:52Speaker 1: some guys, like I said on Saturday, I thought, you know,
- 2:54Speaker 1: some good individual performances, some guys showed up and maybe even,
- 2:57Speaker 1: maybe didn't flash as much Saturday, but their performance was
- 3:00Speaker 1: as consistent Saturday as it was maybe against Lafayette.
- 3:05Speaker 4: You mentioned a couple of times, Coach, consistency in the
- 3:08Speaker 4: running game had to improve.
- 3:10Speaker 2: What's that look like for you?
- 3:11Speaker 4: Is it a matter of just a lot of repetition
- 3:14Speaker 4: and weakness in practice this week?
- 3:16Speaker 2: Is it running the ball more in a game to
- 3:18Speaker 2: get into a rhythm?
- 3:19Speaker 1: Well, I mean, you'd love to be in rhythm right
- 3:21Speaker 1: from the start, you know, and again, you know, give
- 3:26Speaker 1: Maryland a lot of credit, but they're, they're not, they
- 3:29Speaker 1: watch the tape too.
- 3:30Speaker 5: Right.
- 3:30Speaker 1: So, you know, you're playing a lot of eight man
- 3:32Speaker 1: front early in the game and it's, those are, those
- 3:35Speaker 1: are opportunities to throw the ball, not necessarily run it. So,
- 3:38Speaker 1: you know, I think maybe their plan was to maybe
- 3:40Speaker 1: let Caleb try to beat them with his arm and maybe,
- 3:43Speaker 1: get another hat down there and maybe forced to stop
- 3:45Speaker 1: the run. And then ultimately at the end of the day,
- 3:46Speaker 1: you got another quarterback player down there too. So, you know,
- 3:49Speaker 1: I just, yeah, you want to run it more. I
- 3:51Speaker 1: want more plays than what we got, which means we
- 3:53Speaker 1: have to be better on third down, which means we
- 3:55Speaker 1: have to be better on first down. It's all a
- 3:57Speaker 1: vicious cycle that you get caught up into. So, you know,
- 4:01Speaker 1: we want to, we've got to play better. We've got
- 4:02Speaker 1: to play more efficiently. And when we do that, you know,
- 4:05Speaker 1: we'll run it a little bit better because we'll have
- 4:06Speaker 1: more opportunities, but, you know, practice reps of, You know,
- 4:10Speaker 1: you got a couple backs in and out of the
- 4:11Speaker 1: lineup there. Kenji got banged up a little bit. Sincere
- 4:13Speaker 1: got banged up a little bit. So now Trey's in there,
- 4:16Speaker 1: you know, with the one line, which during the week
- 4:18Speaker 1: it's some of that but not all of that. So
- 4:20Speaker 1: this is– there's some rhythmic things there, you know, in
- 4:23Speaker 1: the run game of timing of blocks that, you know,
- 4:26Speaker 1: we got to continue to be crisp on.
- 4:29Speaker 6: You guys have been homebodies through camp in the first
- 4:31Speaker 6: two games of the year, now going on the road.
- 4:34Speaker 6: Is there any difference in practice from a home week
- 4:36Speaker 6: to a road week?
- 4:39Speaker 1: Well, I think this week we're going to deal with
- 4:40Speaker 1: some heat, you know, there. It's going to be a
- 4:43Speaker 1: little bit different temperature-wise than maybe what it was here
- 4:46Speaker 1: this morning. So, I mean, we're getting close to frost
- 4:49Speaker 1: on the windchill here in the mornings. But, yeah, I mean,
- 4:52Speaker 1: we've got to handle the elements. We've got to handle
- 4:53Speaker 1: the trip. It's not the easiest trip to make. So
- 4:57Speaker 1: we're going to handle the logistics of that and ultimately,
- 4:59Speaker 1: like I said, you know, be on the road and
- 5:01Speaker 1: get our guys ready to play. There is a little
- 5:03Speaker 1: bit something different about going on the road. You know,
- 5:05Speaker 1: you've got 70 or so guys and, you know, it's
- 5:08Speaker 1: just you, you get on a plane and, you know,
- 5:11Speaker 1: kind of you versus everybody type of mentality. I think
- 5:13Speaker 1: there is something to that a little bit, but yeah,
- 5:16Speaker 1: we've got to get our guys to go, go get
- 5:17Speaker 1: a road win here.
- 5:18Speaker 5: You mentioned playing against Hampton before, obviously that was four
- 5:21Speaker 5: years ago in a different school. Is there anything that
- 5:23Speaker 5: valuable that can hold over from that? Or is it
- 5:26Speaker 5: just looking at his last couple of years?
- 5:28Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 5:28Speaker 1: I mean, I think you can watch some of the
- 5:29Speaker 1: tape and, you know, see, see the improvements. I mean, he's,
- 5:33Speaker 1: he's much improved since, since those days and, Seems like
- 5:37Speaker 1: he's got a good command of what they're asking him
- 5:38Speaker 1: to do, and we've got to do a good job
- 5:39Speaker 1: to try to affect him just like we do every
- 5:41Speaker 1: week with the QB. We didn't do a great job
- 5:44Speaker 1: of that Saturday. We never really got to the QB
- 5:47Speaker 1: for Maryland and made him get off the spot.
- 5:49Speaker 2: And get uncomfortable.
- 5:51Speaker 1: When he did make some uncomfortable throws, his receiver stepped
- 5:54Speaker 1: up and made some huge plays for him. Anytime, it
- 5:57Speaker 1: doesn't matter who the quarterback is, you want to try
- 5:59Speaker 1: to disrupt the rhythm and timing of that passing game.
- 6:03Speaker 7: Coach, Hayden Pegg has gone from being a special teams
- 6:05Speaker 7: guy last year and now he's tied for your third
- 6:07Speaker 7: leading tackler on the team. And he's playing behind a
- 6:09Speaker 7: couple of pretty good linebackers. Can you just talk about
- 6:11Speaker 7: his improvement and his contribution to what he's done early
- 6:14Speaker 7: in the season?
- 6:16Speaker 1: Great attitude and effort guy. Brings the same energy every
- 6:18Speaker 1: day to practice. Incredible competitive spirit. Earns everything he gets.
- 6:24Speaker 2: Goes to practice.
- 6:25Speaker 1: And like I said, his practice reps look like his
- 6:27Speaker 1: game reps. He's been a contributor in the kicking game,
- 6:30Speaker 1: as you mentioned. Made a couple of really big plays
- 6:32Speaker 1: the last two weeks and the more opportunities he gets,
- 6:35Speaker 1: he continues to answer the bell. So, you know, those
- 6:37Speaker 1: are the type of guys that you want in your program.
- 6:39Speaker 1: And those are the type of guys that, you know,
- 6:41Speaker 1: the other guys naturally root for because they're doing it
- 6:45Speaker 1: the right way. You play with a great attitude, you
- 6:46Speaker 1: play with great effort, you know, it doesn't, sometimes that
- 6:49Speaker 1: catches up, you know, maybe what you might lack in
- 6:51Speaker 1: other areas. So yeah, I mean, I'm, I'm, I'm really
- 6:54Speaker 1: happy that he's with us. I'm really happy he's on
- 6:56Speaker 1: our football team. And, um, Man, oh, man, I'm really
- 6:59Speaker 1: glad for that kid that he's playing the way he's
- 7:01Speaker 1: playing because he certainly earned it.
- 7:10Speaker 2: I can hear you. You don't need that microphone.
- 7:13Speaker 6: Oh.
- 7:14Speaker 2: TV, everything. Upside for that unit, and how do you
- 7:22Speaker 2: get to that upside? Well, I mean.
- 7:24Speaker 1: Yeah, you're going to watch the tape and you give
- 7:26Speaker 1: up some passing yards, right? So everybody's going to jump
- 7:29Speaker 1: to the big conclusion pad that everybody jumps to.
- 7:32Speaker 2: All the DBs aren't any good.
- 7:33Speaker 1: You know, this guy, but we're making, we got two
- 7:36Speaker 1: one-handed catches, one on third and five on a deep
- 7:38Speaker 1: crossing route across the field. The other guy's got scholarships
- 7:42Speaker 1: and NIL money too. You know, they get paid to
- 7:43Speaker 1: play and they get paid to make plays too. And
- 7:45Speaker 1: they made a few plays. So yeah, there's some things
- 7:48Speaker 1: on the tape that we want back, but you know,
- 7:50Speaker 1: those guys stayed in there and battled and competed. And,
- 7:52Speaker 1: you know, they're only going to continue to improve with
- 7:54Speaker 1: at-bats and the opportunities to play. So, you know, we
- 7:57Speaker 1: got to live with the good. We got to live
- 7:59Speaker 1: with some of the mistakes that they have. It's no
- 8:00Speaker 1: different than other positions, right? It's no different at left tackle.
- 8:03Speaker 1: I mean, the guys are freshmen. It is what it is.
- 8:05Speaker 1: There's no different at quarterback. It's a second start. I mean,
- 8:07Speaker 1: these guys, some of these guys are young players. So
- 8:10Speaker 1: it's not going to be perfect every time. We just
- 8:11Speaker 1: got to make sure that we limit the explosives on defense.
- 8:14Speaker 1: And we got to limit the catastrophic mistakes on offense
- 8:17Speaker 1: that change the course of a football game. And When
- 8:20Speaker 1: those things start to show up and start to happen,
- 8:21Speaker 1: we'll play better, more rhythmic on offense, and we'll play
- 8:24Speaker 1: more consistent on defense. But we've got to fight through
- 8:27Speaker 1: some of the growing pains of these guys. They can
- 8:29Speaker 1: only learn from their experiences. They can't learn sitting there
- 8:31Speaker 1: on the sidelines.
- 8:35Speaker 5: You mentioned Caleb being young.
- 8:37Speaker 2: I think a couple starts.
- 8:38Speaker 5: But what are the kind of the things that you're
- 8:40Speaker 5: working on with him at this point in his career?
- 8:43Speaker 5: You mentioned some of the timing things a little bit.
- 8:45Speaker 2: Just where does he need to improve? Just defensive recognition.
- 8:49Speaker 1: Football IQ and trying to pour as much of that
- 8:51Speaker 1: on him as we possibly can. When the picture changes,
- 8:54Speaker 1: what are you going to do? You assume something pre-snap
- 8:56Speaker 1: and maybe it didn't end up that way. Are we
- 8:59Speaker 1: still locked into that or do we reset our feet
- 9:02Speaker 1: and flip our mind to where the ball is supposed
- 9:04Speaker 1: to go? Continuing to perfect the pre-snap process as it
- 9:08Speaker 1: pertains to that. Consistently just awareness of down and distance.
- 9:12Speaker 1: Consistently making sure that we're IDing the front correctly. and
- 9:15Speaker 1: helping us get into good plays or out of bad ones.
- 9:19Speaker 1: And then from there, post snap on the ball snap,
- 9:21Speaker 1: you know, what's your process look like? So again, young player,
- 9:25Speaker 1: more times he gets to do this, the better off
- 9:27Speaker 1: he's going to be. You can only simulate so many
- 9:29Speaker 1: different defensive looks in a live practice format during preseason
- 9:33Speaker 1: camp without sacrificing who you want to be defensively.
- 9:35Speaker 2: So other teams that we play don't have to play
- 9:38Speaker 2: our defense.
- 9:39Speaker 4: Right.
- 9:39Speaker 1: So they only get so many of these practice reps
- 9:42Speaker 1: throughout the course of the week. And we just got
- 9:44Speaker 1: to do a better job getting it to them and
- 9:45Speaker 1: coaching them, coaching it better. And then he's got to
- 9:47Speaker 1: do a better job of just continuing to learn like
- 9:50Speaker 1: I think he's doing.
- 9:50Speaker 5: So.
- 9:52Speaker 6: After the game Saturday, both you and John Lister really
- 9:55Speaker 6: emphasized the response and how you guys respond. Can you
- 9:57Speaker 6: just talk about how that response starts?
- 10:00Speaker 2: During practice?
- 10:01Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 10:01Speaker 1: I mean, I think we'll find out what we are,
- 10:04Speaker 1: but I think that you don't have a chance to
- 10:06Speaker 1: do that on Saturday unless you have a great week,
- 10:07Speaker 1: like you mentioned. So, you know, we got enough veteran
- 10:10Speaker 1: people here to understand that this is a growth process.
- 10:14Speaker 1: I mean, there's really good signs of prosperity over here,
- 10:17Speaker 1: and there's really good bad signs of adversity over here,
- 10:20Speaker 1: and the truth of the matter is I'm walking through
- 10:22Speaker 1: the middle of this storm, and I can learn something
- 10:24Speaker 1: from both of those, and we've had that early on
- 10:26Speaker 1: in the season. I mean, last week we were the
- 10:28Speaker 1: best team ever to step in Rensselaer Field. This week
- 10:31Speaker 1: we're the worst team ever to, you know, put on
- 10:33Speaker 1: a uniform, and I get it. So the truth is
- 10:36Speaker 1: somewhere in the middle, and we've got to find out
- 10:38Speaker 1: where that is and find a level of consistency there
- 10:40Speaker 1: and then work to improve. But each and every guy,
- 10:43Speaker 1: I mean, you don't see any sayings in these walls,
- 10:47Speaker 1: do you? You see one right there.
- 10:48Speaker 2: That's it. it just says get better.
- 10:49Speaker 1: So we can look at this from a, you know,
- 10:53Speaker 1: a telescope view and everything is see everything. And, or
- 10:56Speaker 1: we can be in the microscope and, you know, really
- 10:59Speaker 1: put our energy in the right place in the 24
- 11:00Speaker 1: hours a day that we do get and pay attention
- 11:03Speaker 1: to getting better. And if we do that, then we
- 11:04Speaker 1: will see improvement and we will handle the adversity the
- 11:07Speaker 1: right way.
- 11:08Speaker 2: Coach, did you see the.
- 11:11Speaker 4: Defense in particular reacting well to what happened the other day?
- 11:16Speaker 4: I mean, you like the, or the approach that the
- 11:18Speaker 4: guys have taken since having a difficult game?
- 11:22Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, I do.
- 11:25Speaker 1: And there's really nothing else really to say about that.
- 11:28Speaker 1: I mean, that's the expectation. The expectation is to play
- 11:30Speaker 1: better in all three phases. So, I mean, again, the
- 11:34Speaker 1: quarterback hits 16 to 17 passes in the second half, right?
- 11:37Speaker 1: And I find it hard to believe, and I will
- 11:39Speaker 1: go watch the tape with anybody, that that is just
- 11:42Speaker 1: because we're terrible on defense. That has nothing to do
- 11:45Speaker 1: with it. The kid made some really, really good throws.
- 11:47Speaker 1: Some guys made some really tough contested catches where our
- 11:49Speaker 1: guys in position. There's a couple of times where we
- 11:52Speaker 1: let the guys get away from us a little bit
- 11:53Speaker 1: that we got to do a better job of. And
- 11:54Speaker 1: we got to practice with that part of it and
- 11:56Speaker 1: practice that way during the week. And I have full
- 11:59Speaker 1: confidence that they'll do what they need to do to
- 12:01Speaker 1: shore up where we maybe had a couple of mishaps
- 12:03Speaker 1: on Saturday and get it fixed.
- 12:05Speaker 6: You had mentioned you guys play a lot of man.
- 12:08Speaker 6: They were pretty successful against man on third down. I
- 12:10Speaker 6: don't want you to keep singing the praise of their quarterback,
- 12:13Speaker 6: but was it more just something that they were, you know,
- 12:14Speaker 6: their athletes on the field or was it, Anything technique-wise
- 12:17Speaker 6: that made them a little bit more successful against man
- 12:20Speaker 6: on third?
- 12:22Speaker 2: They made the catches, you know, and that's really their
- 12:25Speaker 2: only thing. I can't change it.
- 12:27Speaker 1: I wish I could, but they made the plays, made
- 12:28Speaker 1: the catches, and you got to give credit where credit
- 12:31Speaker 1: is due, and you got to go back and watch
- 12:33Speaker 1: the tape and figure out how you can get better,
- 12:34Speaker 1: and that's what we're trying to do.
- 12:37Speaker 6: Just going off the adversity question, are there any specific
- 12:40Speaker 6: voices in the locker room that have stuck out to
- 12:42Speaker 6: you since Saturday?
- 12:44Speaker 7: Yeah, I mean.
- 12:46Speaker 2: Look, like this is real life. This isn't Twitter.
- 12:49Speaker 4: Right.
- 12:49Speaker 1: So this is real life. This is something didn't go
- 12:53Speaker 1: our way on Saturday. And everybody has an individual responsibility
- 12:56Speaker 1: to that. This isn't we just found some speech and
- 12:59Speaker 1: some guy went in there, took a shirt off and
- 13:01Speaker 1: beat his chest and gave some epic speech. Now, all
- 13:03Speaker 1: of a sudden, we're going to win every game here
- 13:05Speaker 1: on out. This is not what this is. This is
- 13:07Speaker 1: can you be really good in your process when it
- 13:09Speaker 1: doesn't feel like you should be?
- 13:11Speaker 2: That's it.
- 13:11Speaker 1: That's the same responsibility I have. That's the same responsibility
- 13:14Speaker 1: we all have. So, like, that's what this is. This
- 13:17Speaker 1: is not– this isn't man, oh, man, like I need
- 13:20Speaker 1: some epic speech from somebody. This is– I need our
- 13:23Speaker 1: senior leaders. I need our coaching staff. I need everybody
- 13:26Speaker 1: to take full accountability for where we're at and to
- 13:28Speaker 1: continue to improve. And that's all we're asking the guys
- 13:30Speaker 1: to do, to be honest with you. So, we can
- 13:32Speaker 1: handle that. We can have a great Tuesday. We can
- 13:35Speaker 1: back that up with a great Wednesday. Calm them down
- 13:37Speaker 1: a little bit on Thursday. We'll walk through on Thursday.
- 13:39Speaker 4: Okay.
- 13:40Speaker 2: Turn them up on Friday.
- 13:41Speaker 1: We got to get on the airplane and go have
- 13:42Speaker 1: a stiff challenge and go down and put our best
- 13:44Speaker 1: foot forward and try to win the football game Saturday night.
- 13:46Speaker 5: Talked on Saturday about Shamar Porter. What's kind of just
- 13:49Speaker 5: the biggest growth you've seen from him from the start
- 13:50Speaker 5: of fall camp to now?
- 13:52Speaker 1: Getting comfortable, you know, learning what we're asking those guys

- 14:03Speaker 1: in the same place, but you have to learn a
- 14:05Speaker 1: new language, right? Somebody walked into your house, said you
- 14:07Speaker 1: could live here, but you can't communicate or talk the
- 14:10Speaker 1: way you've talked your entire life. You've got to change

- 14:18Speaker 1: get better as the weeks go by, and we're going
- 14:21Speaker 1: to need him down the stretch here. So, you know,
- 14:23Speaker 1: we're going to continue to see that growth and that improvement.
- 14:30Speaker 7: Thanks, guys.
- 14:30Speaker 2: Appreciate it.
