Transcript
- 0:00I went to Seattle with intrigue about the city and also just
- 0:03this deep understanding that I was going to hate a lot of a
- 0:07city. But also look at the cool shit
- 0:09that's happening behind the scenes.
- 0:10Probably. I'm actually breathing.
- 0:12Yeah. Yeah.
- 0:13Which is rare for me. Behind the scenes is the show.
- 0:16Yeah. Humanity is highly compulsible.
- 0:20This week on Go Wildly, Emily heads out for a solo adventure
- 0:23and is joined by Christy Chow, a dynamic force of nature.
- 0:26Born and raised in the wild heart of Southern Oregon,
- 0:29Christy is equal parts brainy and brawny, thriving on
- 0:32movement, mischief, and meaning. Whether she's diving into
- 0:35circular economies, sparking big laughs, identifying birds, or
- 0:39pondering life's deeper currents, Christy brings a
- 0:41unique blend of curiosity, connection, and wild hearted joy
- 0:45to everything she does. For the extended experience of
- 0:48our hike at the Green Springs Mountain Loop Trail outside
- 0:51Ashland, OR check out our YouTube Let's Get Into.
- 0:56It just kidding. Kind of.
- 0:58We're getting into it, but this conversation was just too good
- 1:01to squeeze into one episode, so we're splitting it into two
- 1:05parts. Please enjoy this Part 1 and
- 1:07catch the rest of the adventure next week in Part 2.
- 1:10OK, now please enjoy every few. Seconds.
- 1:13This is like this, you know. Well, sever that one.
- 1:16She. Left in the the part in our
- 1:19intro because it was probably the best take that we did where
- 1:23I'm blowing on mosquitoes. That's.
- 1:26In the intro where you hear a it's me blowing off a mosquito.
- 1:31Oh my God, what? Behind the scenes knowledge?
- 1:33Yeah. Are we like those on the thing?
- 1:36I mean, I'm taking my shoes off because they're muddy and.
- 1:39Because you have a bog in your shoes.
- 1:41I did in fact notice that. Oh, I did get a nice little
- 1:44Raspberry on my calf on my. Where's that from?
- 1:48Probably that log that I log rolled.
- 1:50Over it was a technique. It was.
- 1:54It worked after I stumbled. Yeah, my shoes will dry out and
- 2:01we're for going chairs today because I only had one chair and
- 2:06this just feels more like us. Yeah.
- 2:10Oh, I wasn't. I was not.
- 2:11I love what you guys do and when you were like, do you have an
- 2:15extra chair? I was like, oh, I really don't
- 2:16want to be on a chair. Yeah.
- 2:18So, yeah, I'd rather if, if it's conducive, I'd rather just sit
- 2:24on the ground. And that's how I.
- 2:25I am in general. I actually because I work from
- 2:29home a lot and I have always. Mic.
- 2:31Yes, please. May I reach into your?
- 2:33Shirt, Please reach into my shirt.
- 2:36Perfect. But like I, you know, I work
- 2:39from home a lot. It's like touching my mouth.
- 2:41Should I? Should I move this down?
- 2:44Where do we want it? Where's the best place?
- 2:45Where are you going to leave your sweater out?
- 2:46It's right there. OK, OK.
- 2:51Can she not fiddle maybe? There's no colors.
- 2:54Sorry. We're still we're still on.
- 2:59We're still cooking with gas fill of your hat too.
- 3:01Yeah yeah, that's that's a cool look.
- 3:03It's right like here is best, but this is a nice like it's not
- 3:08getting bonked around by things and.
- 3:10Like I think you should just have.
- 3:12That always this is just how I go through my day.
- 3:15It's like a pom pom. It's really like, oh, she's the
- 3:17podcast person. It's a branding.
- 3:19But Heather and I hiked up her Table Rock a week or two ago and
- 3:24we were doing the thing and the guy walked by and was like, oh,
- 3:27you have you have microphones on your hats.
- 3:30And boy, did I pull out my 3° personnel.
- 3:34And I was like, yeah, well, actually we're out here filming
- 3:36a podcast. We had just gotten business
- 3:38cards. So I was like, I don't think I
- 3:41have any. Oh, I was like, here, take a
- 3:43card. Like, let's check us out.
- 3:45Have a listen. We launched this week.
- 3:48I love that. Give you a business card.
- 3:49I want a business. Card.
- 3:50Because you know what it's like. I'm going to put it in my
- 3:52journal. Yes.
- 3:53I mean, and you know, I share digitally the podcast, but I
- 3:58would I would love to have it. Love to give you a business card
- 4:03yeah but it was so it was so fun that was the first business card
- 4:06I got to give out was on the trail because he saw our
- 4:10microphones I. Love that you're it's like that
- 4:12you're on it, you know, like it's really like this is this
- 4:15is. This is our image, yeah.
- 4:17This is a great photo, by the way.
- 4:18I know it's on your, it's like your main image, right?
- 4:22Like but it's it's so nice. Thank you, Heather.
- 4:24Did it, Heather. Yeah.
- 4:27Two thumbs up to Heather. And she is such a great partner
- 4:32on all of this. Creative genius.
- 4:35Yeah. Amazing.
- 4:36She's so, she's so fun. She's so creative.
- 4:38She's a really good worker. I don't know, Heather.
- 4:41Right. No.
- 4:41OK, no checking. Just checking.
- 4:43But you'd love her and we would be having such a great time.
- 4:46Yeah, if she was here. I mean, we're already having a
- 4:48great time with your family. Yes.
- 4:50Family. We'll get into that.
- 4:52Family is everything. Yes.
- 4:55You know, but yeah, that's that's amazing.
- 4:57Yeah. Awesome.
- 4:58Love it. I'm this is great.
- 4:59Yeah. Good.
- 5:00And you you got on the trend. You have the QR code.
- 5:02Yeah. Fewer words, more QR codes.
- 5:05Yeah, I mean. Sometimes I'm like fucking, I
- 5:08have to pull out my phone right now and I pull this up and oh,
- 5:11my camera's not working. I have to have the brightness of
- 5:13just right, but has. Southern Oregon started to do
- 5:15the menus. Oh, yeah, Because of COVID,
- 5:17Yeah. Oh, right, right.
- 5:18COVID made it all to our menus. That's right.
- 5:21And we're now starting to get regular menus back.
- 5:25OK. But it's still a lot of, like,
- 5:28both options are there. Yeah.
- 5:29Which I like when you're waiting for somebody to come and drop
- 5:32off a menu, Right. And they're a little
- 5:35understaffed, overworked. There's a QR code and you can
- 5:37start looking at the menu before you get the physical one in your
- 5:40hands. Right, right.
- 5:42Yeah, Yeah. I have mixed feelings about it.
- 5:44Like, I think a lot of that stuff that's like, I went to
- 5:49Seattle with intrigue about the city and also just this deep
- 5:52understanding that I was going to hate a lot of a city, you
- 5:57know, I mean, like, cuz. You'd grown up here, and you've
- 6:00grown up here in Ashland. You went to college and grad
- 6:03school in Santa Clara. No, just undergrad OK and then
- 6:07grad school ended up because of COVID being mostly online.
- 6:10I was supposed to be in Denver. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 6:13Yeah, so I had my ticket for cuz it was a hybrid program.
- 6:16So I was gonna be there the last semester, had my ticket ready.
- 6:18And then they said don't come. And then they were like maybe
- 6:21wait a little bit. And it ended up being what, four
- 6:23years or something where we could, but yeah, but yeah.
- 6:26And so then we got masks in the mail. 2020 grad masks.
- 6:30That was the swag. That was the swag. 2020 grad
- 6:34cloth mask thesis online. Wow, it was wild.
- 6:37It was such a crazy time. I mean, I still think back to
- 6:39that and I'm like, that was real.
- 6:42It exists. It's still as part of like
- 6:45everything, but it, it, it, I mean, from an environmental
- 6:48context too. It's so interesting,
- 6:50fascinating. So many different, different
- 6:52things were happening and things measurable changes we were
- 6:55seeing in a split. You know, gone second.
- 6:58That was like in talent when I was on the City Council and
- 7:02doing 0 waste reduction work in talent community.
- 7:08We had just passed our no single use food service wear policy, so
- 7:15all of the restaurants were transitioning to no single use
- 7:21to go containers, cutlery, cups, all of that.
- 7:24And it was all going to be compostable or reusable.
- 7:27Yeah. And then COVID hit and all of
- 7:32that went out the window. Yeah.
- 7:34In in a moment. I mean, I think it was.
- 7:37I have no idea. Yeah, because I don't live in
- 7:39talent anymore. Yeah, that's true.
- 7:40Yeah. And, and it was an ordinance
- 7:43that was, you know, a city ordinance, but it was going to
- 7:46be mostly enforced by the community, the Talent 0 Waste
- 7:50team, right? And multiple people on that team
- 7:55had their houses burned down and the Alameda Fire at the end of
- 7:5820/20/2020. And so they were moved out and
- 8:05their house had just burned down.
- 8:06Like the trauma of that they weren't thinking about how can I
- 8:11support the zero waste efforts and recoveries and and now a
- 8:17third of the town, how do I rebuild my life?
- 8:19Where do I want to live now that I don't have a house?
- 8:23And when people are living in very temporary settings, it
- 8:30doesn't really make a lot of sense to have a lot of things
- 8:33with them that they have to tote around everywhere that they go.
- 8:37So it comes back to this one thing that I need for right now,
- 8:40and then I'm gonna toss it. Yeah, yeah.
- 8:43I mean, there's like, that is so real, that piece of it.
- 8:46There's like we talk a lot in our work about like climate
- 8:49resiliency and adaptation and disaster and stuff like that.
- 8:53And that, that's an interesting conversation between that
- 8:55department and like the waste department, right?
- 8:58Like the folks who do like the waste work because you know, we
- 9:01are every, you know, every single day, 24/7 eating,
- 9:05sleeping, drinking, you know, lower your waste, reduce waste,
- 9:09you know, and then these situations happen and like, yes,
- 9:12like the like the Alameda Fire, for instance, where I got the
- 9:15job offer call. Wow, while I was handing out as
- 9:18much single use, like protective equipment, I was down here, I
- 9:24was at the the kind of the we called them the camps, right,
- 9:27Like when we were handing out resources and you know, all the
- 9:31stuff that like it'd be so interesting because people, some
- 9:34people close minded folks in the communities that I'm part of,
- 9:38you know, would be like, oh, like there's got to be better
- 9:41ways. Like that's but sometimes you
- 9:42have to be like, there's not this is the way.
- 9:45Like if we if we don't, if we don't help people first, what do
- 9:48we have to work on? Right.
- 9:50Yeah. So that's such, that was an
- 9:52interesting like juxtaposition of like being there working,
- 9:55like doing like aid now and then getting this like, you know,
- 10:00call of like, hey, do you have like, can we talk about like the
- 10:03job? And then me being like,
- 10:04literally they called three times and me being like, I can't
- 10:07talk right now, but I can call you back and like, and I
- 10:09realized that could have been a big misstep, right?
- 10:11Like it could have been, could have.
- 10:13It wasn't. Which was great.
- 10:14They probably saw it as a really good value signal of you of wow,
- 10:20she's really involved in her community and she's doing
- 10:23community work. Yeah, that is beneficial and
- 10:27aiding beyond helping people to reduce their waste, like she's
- 10:31helping to save people's lives and they didn't want to be
- 10:34assholes. Probably, yeah.
- 10:35So back to that of like people probably generally don't want to
- 10:38try and be an asshole. So yeah, no, definitely.
- 10:40I think that that was like that was a really, it was just such
- 10:43an interesting parallel time. But what you say is such a good
- 10:47point because I think it's something that within the maybe
- 10:52like siloed 0 waste, which first of all, that whole term there's
- 10:56problems with. But within that community, it's
- 10:58like, you know, there can be very like privileged, close
- 11:02minded opinions about how 0 waste should look or, or waste
- 11:06reduction should look and what an ideal would be.
- 11:08But the reality is when you have disasters, which, you know, up
- 11:13in Seattle, a lot of those folks, you know, I won't speak
- 11:16for most people because a lot of their people are coming from
- 11:18other places. But you know, the wildfire is
- 11:23not top of mind in it is on the West Coast, but it isn't
- 11:28necessarily up there because within the West side of the
- 11:31Cascades up far up north like. We're.
- 11:35We're worried about the smoke now.
- 11:36Yeah. I mean, I will say in the last
- 11:38couple years actually, since even since I've been there, it's
- 11:40talked about more. It's less of like my yard is
- 11:43going to be on fire. And we're of awe man the smoke.
- 11:46Yeah. And I did grow up with the awe
- 11:48man the smoke because I'm, I've, I'm in Ashland where a lot of
- 11:51times it was smoke from the California fires, right?
- 11:55Or from other areas in, in Seattle.
- 11:56It's a lot of Canada fires. We're getting the smoke and
- 11:59that's the big bummer until like 2020 when my dad had to evacuate
- 12:04his office in Ashland, right? Or where my, my friends families
- 12:07or all my friends who are in talent and their homes were
- 12:10gone. And that's when it was suddenly
- 12:12like, OK, right. So this is more than smoke, you
- 12:14know, like it's, it's about like it's here.
- 12:18Wildfire has always been here, and it's much, it's much.
- 12:21It's happening much more often and at a higher degree and much
- 12:25worse. Right.
- 12:26And when there's the heat, forest, wildfire, yes, And then
- 12:30there's. Urban.
- 12:30And then there's urban wildfire, right?
- 12:32Because the Tinder is box is different and it's explosive,
- 12:36yeah. And everything in our homes is
- 12:39flammable. Yep, every material.
- 12:42I mean, when the Almeda fire was happening, all night long, you
- 12:46could hear propane tanks blowing up.
- 12:48Yeah. Because it was people's houses
- 12:50burning, which meant their barbecues.
- 12:52Right. And my house has seven propane
- 12:56tanks at it because it's a rafting house.
- 12:59Yeah. Take propane tanks to power our
- 13:01stoves on the river. And so you know how many houses
- 13:04don't have a propane tank? Yeah.
- 13:06Let alone multiple. Yeah.
- 13:08And this. Isn't a tree.
- 13:09And burning anymore, they had to.
- 13:11A lot of people had to evacuate in one vehicle, if they got to
- 13:15in a vehicle at all. Yeah.
- 13:17And so vehicles are exploding, gas tanks are exploding.
- 13:20And it's that fuels more fire, right?
- 13:26Yeah. Right.
- 13:26So it's not just burning through like Tinder.
- 13:29No, everything that is catching on fire is catching on more fire
- 13:34and creating more and more heat and explosivity and.
- 13:38Humanity is highly combustible heat.
- 13:42And that was like, like, the smoke is one thing.
- 13:45The smoke is is debilitating. It's toxic.
- 13:48Yeah, it's a lot. But then when it's the smoke of
- 13:51your friends. Literally homes, yeah.
- 13:53Or like there's smoke and there's fire right under it.
- 13:56Yeah. And it's hot and it's here.
- 13:58Like that's, that's something that a lot of the people that I
- 14:01interact with up north don't have context for.
- 14:05So it's, it's so interesting to like, again, just to, to be
- 14:10there's, there's a lot of, you know, it's a city, there's a lot
- 14:12of a lot of privilege. There's a lot of a lot of
- 14:15everything because it's a city, but especially, you know,
- 14:19affluent West Coast city for a lot of the folks there, it's
- 14:23just, it's such a different reality.
- 14:25And so I do, I think about the fires a lot, like even in the
- 14:29waste work that I do, because when it comes down to it, when
- 14:32we do go into a community where it's not feasible, right?
- 14:36Like I'm, I'm thinking we, we try and, and, and help folks
- 14:40transition to reuse in the Chinatown International District
- 14:44where there are a lot of like small mom and pop shops where
- 14:47they're just trying to get by. And a lot of them are immigrant
- 14:50families and they don't really speak a lot of English or
- 14:52anything like that. And it's kind of like in a
- 14:55sense, there's like for them, they're just at a different like
- 14:59place, you know, and there and for them, single use is what's
- 15:03feasible and what's going to help them as a community more
- 15:06right now, right? And so like, unless there's aid
- 15:08that comes in, which luckily we have in our program to some
- 15:11degree to help provide them with with some other resources and
- 15:15like ask them and understand what they need, which is key,
- 15:19right? Like you don't just go into a
- 15:20community and shove resources, do whatever.
- 15:22This is, I see you. I see you have a problem that
- 15:25I've identified, and this is what's going to make your life
- 15:28better. Oh, it's terrible.
- 15:29And they're like, cool, thanks. Can't use this.
- 15:32Can't use it. Don't want this.
- 15:34Yeah, like not gonna. You don't understand how my
- 15:36business works or like how my community views this thing.
- 15:40We didn't see that as a problem. Right, right.
- 15:42It's not or like how do you know we're not reusing what we right
- 15:45have? So it's like there are
- 15:47assumptions and everything. So that's been an interesting
- 15:49part of like learning about it, but seeing to just like what it
- 15:52takes for different communities to be resilient and like, how do
- 15:56we, how do we take a pause and listen to that and understand
- 16:01that? And so that all to me comes back
- 16:03to, I think a lot about like the fire resiliency and, and, and
- 16:06like what do we do when you don't have the tools that you're
- 16:10supposed to have, right when, when, when something like this
- 16:14happens, like you get down to the bare bones, you're handing
- 16:16out. Like one of the things I was
- 16:20thinking of was at the fire camps when we were just making
- 16:23sandwiches and handing them out. And it's like somebody was like,
- 16:25what about the public health? What public health?
- 16:28Yeah, Like what? This is crisis.
- 16:31Do you want food? Why do you like what?
- 16:34How like these systems? There are times when the systems
- 16:37are gone. Yeah.
- 16:39Like, you know, and, and, and you have the aid and that's what
- 16:43you know. So I think it's so interesting
- 16:44because like my life is built up around systems, my professional
- 16:48life, but I think about home and I think about these, I think
- 16:52about wildfire and I step out of it.
- 16:54So it's really, it's, it's such an interesting thing because
- 16:56even the wildfire has very little to do with what I do on a
- 16:59day-to-day. It's always that kind of
- 17:01reminder of like, and it and it happened to be that that was an
- 17:04instance where I got the job offer call.
- 17:07And so that was like a really pivotal, like, wow, this is
- 17:10going to follow me. Yeah.
- 17:11And in thinking about like the scope of work that you want to
- 17:16accomplish and when a system goes down, when a system that
- 17:20you're relying on goes down and fails, what is the bear?
- 17:23What is underneath that? What's the bare bones?
- 17:25What do people actually need to live and how can we respond to
- 17:33that in essentially the opportunity to create a new
- 17:37system exactly to rebuild, because so much of what we're
- 17:40doing is responding to the systems that are already at
- 17:43play. And as much as fire is
- 17:46devastating, yeah, it also it makes a clean.
- 17:51Slate, it's very necessary. Yeah.
- 17:53It's many environmentally trees that we like.
- 17:56I mean, propagation, for instance, of some of our like
- 17:58Keystone, like ecology is absolutely critical.
- 18:03Yeah, there are some kind trees that can't actually grow again,
- 18:07unless, yeah, they need the heat to.
- 18:11They need the fire to open up their cones and disperse their
- 18:15seeds. Yeah, I can't remember what the
- 18:16word for that is called, but it's a really good word and I
- 18:18know it starts with an S. Oh, man, but my forest ecology.
- 18:23Oh, I wish I knew that word. I probably it's somewhere in
- 18:25Sarotenous. Sarotenous Saroten back.
- 18:28Let's go. See, all of these things are
- 18:31somewhere in the filing cabinet. I just lose them.
- 18:34Gotta whip it back out. Yeah, yes, like so clean slate.
- 18:38What do we actually want that to look like?
- 18:40So like for example, in Talent, we had just created these new,
- 18:48we just adopted into the Talent comprehensive plan the like
- 18:52overarching laws and rules and orders for talent.
- 18:56Yeah. All of these clean energy and
- 18:58climate policies, we had written a community based clean energy
- 19:02action plan. It had all been incorporated
- 19:04into a section of the comprehensive plan and adopted
- 19:07into law. Yeah.
- 19:09And little did we, I mean, a lot of them we knew were going to be
- 19:13challenging because how do you take a home that's already built
- 19:16right and convert it to all clean stuff?
- 19:19How do you retrofit something exact exactly?
- 19:22Yeah. We knew that a lot of we were
- 19:24making a lot of policies for new builds, yes.
- 19:27That if you're going to build new, IT has to be built under
- 19:29these parameters. Yeah.
- 19:31Little did we know, yeah, that eight months later, 1/3 of the
- 19:36town was going to burn down and things were going to be built
- 19:39new. And we were going to have this
- 19:41policy, these policies in place for these things to be built
- 19:44with efficiency conservation fire wise, solar ready like.
- 19:50I mean, thank goodness that you were thinking ahead in that way.
- 19:55We couldn't. We couldn't have predicted that
- 19:57future, right? But something.
- 20:01What a great opportunity it became to say wow, like, yeah,
- 20:04that was really horrible. Yeah, not downplaying the trauma
- 20:09and horror of 1/3 of the town burning down, but wow, we got to
- 20:13actually. And they're continuing to build.
- 20:16I'm not part of the WE anymore. I don't live there, but the
- 20:20community is getting to rebuild in the way that they wanted
- 20:25things to be built. Yeah, I feel like people need to
- 20:27hear and see that more because I think that's where a lot of my
- 20:31work and like the work that other people, our work like that
- 20:37environmental work gets lost is like in not getting to see
- 20:42those, not a case study, but not getting to see those examples of
- 20:46like where these people did this helpful work that like laid the
- 20:51why these things are important and necessary, right,
- 20:53essentially. And like where all of these
- 20:57parts of going back to that chain or to the circle fit in to
- 21:01the path that makes like our place livable.
- 21:05You know, I mean down to like your literal building.
- 21:09Like how much insulation is exactly so that you don't have
- 21:13to have so that you don't have to use so much energy to heat or
- 21:17cool your home safer? Wiring.
- 21:19I mean like thinking about. The orientation of your home so
- 21:24that you have sunlight coming in or or you don't.
- 21:28Maybe it's just too hot of an area and actually you don't want
- 21:31windows on that side that are bringing more heat into your
- 21:34home or how you plant the trees and the.
- 21:36Irrigation, you know, or like. How's the runoff going to
- 21:40happen? How do you prevent waterlog if
- 21:42we do have fire and they we get more runoff like you said, and
- 21:47then there's some flooding, like what are we going to do?
- 21:49You know? So it's so it's like all of that
- 21:51planning that goes into it and all the thought like I almost
- 21:53wish that there was like more how do we make that sexy?
- 21:56Yeah, you know what I mean? Like how do you make that?
- 21:58How do we make it? How do you make it?
- 22:01But like it's. So this is when I get on the
- 22:05soapbox, one of many of like we do such like important work like
- 22:11this is like this is this is so critical and like celebrate us
- 22:16more. Damn it, cuz we're we're we're
- 22:19living in the moment with it. We're responding to what's
- 22:22currently happening, Yeah, but we're also planning for the
- 22:24future, yeah, for this vision that we have.
- 22:27Robots and I don't make major motion pictures but like also
- 22:32this is cool. Yeah.
- 22:33Like, you know, we're helping the planet and people it's.
- 22:38Very. Cool, you know.
- 22:39And when you get to, we've talked about this kind of on
- 22:44Rihanna's episode of like, you show up to something, you just
- 22:47get to see the wonder and the glory of it.
- 22:50But then when you actually get behind the scenes of it, the
- 22:52what goes into it, what's underneath it all, Yeah.
- 22:56It makes it even more wonderful and glorious.
- 22:58Yeah. And even something that may not
- 23:01be super glamorous, well then you see what went into it and it
- 23:05just gives it another light that makes it so much cooler.
- 23:09I just love knowing how things work.
- 23:11And so I think that that's also a drive for me and why I'm like,
- 23:15everyone should recognize all of the little bits of the puzzle.
- 23:19Yeah. Because like, the end product is
- 23:21glorious and you can't get there without it, and everyone knows
- 23:25that. But also look at the cool shit
- 23:27that's happening behind the scenes.
- 23:28Yeah. Of every system that you
- 23:30interact with, right. My first time going to a Murph,
- 23:35a materials recovery facility and seeing like how things are
- 23:40split up and optically sorted by machinery so that most of what
- 23:45we can recover it can be cut down.
- 23:48And to call it for, for glass again or for steel or, you know,
- 23:51whatever it is that things are aluminum, whatever's being
- 23:54sorted out in our recycling systems like that, that was
- 23:57really interesting to see. And like, if you, I think it
- 23:59like the intrigue there, right? Like, it's like you get to see
- 24:02the system, see how it works. You understand it better.
- 24:04You're gonna like it better. Yeah, you're gonna like it
- 24:06better. And you're gonna feel like you
- 24:07understand where you're a part of it.
- 24:09And that's so key, right. Theater, same thing, right.
- 24:12Like I had to know, we, we actually in our program back in
- 24:15undergrad when I did theater as well as environmental, the
- 24:18theatre side of things you had to go through to have the major,
- 24:21you had to go through and do rotations of being like either
- 24:25on stage or off stage. So.
- 24:27You had to do the tech you. Had to do tech, you had to go,
- 24:29but you had to do set design. You had to paint sets, you had
- 24:32to help build certain sets. You had to learn how to do, you
- 24:35know, use tools and things like that.
- 24:36And you had to go up into the catwalks and do lighting.
- 24:40And then you had to take a class on.
- 24:41I mean, it's so interesting because it's like some of this
- 24:43stuff were like just kept me on stage, right?
- 24:45Or some people are like, keep me on off stage.
- 24:47But when you have that deeper appreciation, especially I would
- 24:51say for theater, because like in show business, it's like behind
- 24:54the scenes is the show. Yeah, that's the show.
- 24:57That's like you, you, you as an audience member.
- 25:01Once you're a theater person or you understand what's going on
- 25:03behind there, you're paying attention to so much, so much
- 25:06more. So much more.
- 25:07It's almost annoying. Yeah.
- 25:08Quite frankly, because you're like, I can't, you almost you're
- 25:11like, I need to go see the show 3 times because the first time I
- 25:13need to see it and just look at the story, whatever.
- 25:15Then the next time I can pick apart like, oh, when that light
- 25:18comes on somebody having to, is that manual or is that like, and
- 25:21how are they blending those two colors together?
- 25:22And then like, are they, who's where, where are they sitting to
- 25:26signal that they had, you know, it's just, it's so.
- 25:29Yeah, yeah. It's fascinating.
- 25:30I'd get into that all the time with my ex-husband because he's
- 25:34an audio, an audio engineer and a musician.
- 25:38And we'd go to shows and I just want to enjoy the show.
- 25:41I just want to like listen to the music and dance.
- 25:43And he's like full assessment of the sound system.
- 25:47What mics are they using? What amps are they using?
- 25:49Like, oh, why is that? That speaker's blown over there,
- 25:53like, and sometimes he would go like find the sound guy and then
- 25:58I would start to go and find the sound guy and be like, hey, so
- 26:02your mids are a little bit high. And I'm just telling you as an
- 26:07audience member, like this is what I'm noticing.
- 26:09Like who is this? And then they probably be like,
- 26:12damn. Like she was right.
- 26:13She. Was right.
- 26:14She's right. Yeah, Oh, yeah.
- 26:17But that's like so I mean, that's so like every single part
- 26:20of our world is like that. I think about that with this
- 26:22podcast, right. Like, I mean, I'm asking you
- 26:24like, oh, like behind the scenes.
- 26:26Like how are you doing this thing?
- 26:27Like it's like it's such an interesting what what is the for
- 26:31you? What part of the behind the
- 26:34scenes? Because you obviously like you,
- 26:37you don't may not do like I think you said Heather does like
- 26:39a lot of the like production and cutting and post, you know, that
- 26:42kind of stuff. But like, what part of it for
- 26:44you is either equal to or better than being in front?
- 26:52Honestly, I've, it's so new. Yeah, this is a very new
- 26:55venture, but I'm really enjoying.
- 26:59I'm doing most of so far. I'm doing most of the
- 27:02recruitment of guests. That's why all the guests so far
- 27:07have been like my besties and how lucky that am I that I have
- 27:13incredible friends. There we go.
- 27:15Like. Are in super intelligent and
- 27:20have a relationship with the outdoors and are super
- 27:23interesting. Fascinating people that tell
- 27:25good stories and make great fodder for this production that
- 27:32I get to like, introduce to the world and brag about.
- 27:36And so like, this is my really cool friend.
- 27:39Well, also getting to see more regularly how cool you are
- 27:43because you are the recurring guest.
- 27:44Yeah, you know, you know. And and my coolness is increased
- 27:49when they see all these people that I.
- 27:51Associate with or someone else, right?
- 27:53We reflect. Yeah.
- 27:55Yeah. So I'm loving like.
- 27:58But there's strategy. Behind there's strategy and
- 28:01there's a lot of practicing. Like somebody may say, yeah,
- 28:06they're interested, but they haven't responded to my e-mail
- 28:10in three weeks. Does that mean no?
- 28:11OK, two weeks, but. Like, you know, I send out a
- 28:16poll of availability and get you scheduled and then I'm waiting
- 28:19and I'm waiting. But once it actually gets
- 28:22rolling and we're building like the agenda for the day and
- 28:28picking the local location and the time, right, and kind of
- 28:33directing, conducting the conversation a little bit, yeah,
- 28:37I love the logistics. I love it.
- 28:40It really is tapping back into that.
- 28:42You love some logistics. You do.
- 28:45I love, I love planning a trade. You plan.
- 28:47Yeah, like the the movie nights, right?
- 28:49Yeah. Like, I mean, you know how to
- 28:51host fucking party. You do.
- 28:53I'm planning a party right now. There's a big I'm trying
- 28:56desperately to figure out how to make it work.
- 28:58So he's come to the summer party.
- 29:00I'm planning a dinner party right now for my housemate.
- 29:03She is an awesome chef, Yeah. And I'm surprised that this is
- 29:08the first time I've started to brag about her in our
- 29:10conversation cuz usually I'm like every 5 minutes.
- 29:13Like what is this an opportunity to brag about Asia yet?
- 29:17So she's an awesome chef and she has been taking over my meal
- 29:23prep. I don't get joy from cooking.
- 29:25I fucking love to eat, yes. I love food, yes, so much.
- 29:30But me making the food, yes, reduces my joy of the eating.
- 29:35Sure. And so I've been, I've been
- 29:38paying a local, like restaurant meal prep service for like a
- 29:43year and a half, maybe, maybe a little bit longer.
- 29:46And they were closing down shop, moving on to other ventures.
- 29:51And so I asked Asia if she wanted to take over my meal
- 29:56prep. Yeah.
- 29:57And it's been amazing. I get so much more variety.
- 29:59I get to watch her cook. I get to come home to the house
- 30:03smelling like such delicious food.
- 30:06Yeah. And she'll be like.
- 30:08So I'm thinking about making this or this.
- 30:10And you're like, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes.
- 30:13Yes both either all sounds great and so her oh like the way that
- 30:20I manifested this Oh my God I'm so grateful every single day
- 30:26we're so fortunate we get along so well I.
- 30:28Want to eat you? Should I want to come eat?
- 30:31Yeah, yeah. She's amazing and she's we're
- 30:35very similar. Like I describe her to people as
- 30:39me if I was 26 like me now if I was 26.
- 30:44Not 26 year old version of me, you, me, what I know and who I
- 30:49am now as if I was 26. Wow, she's fucking awesome.
- 30:53Whoa, who's she gonna be when she's like 3534?
- 30:57It's amazing. And even more incredible.
- 30:59Wow, So part of her professional career pathway that I
- 31:07recognized. And also she vocalized she wants
- 31:11to leave the job that she's at and sorry any of her coworkers
- 31:15who might be listening but probably know and she wants to
- 31:19move into like full time food service, private food service,
- 31:22catering. Yeah, catering meal prep.
- 31:25She doesn't wanna work in a restaurant.
- 31:27She wants to do, like, individual clients.
- 31:29Yeah. And so I'm gonna host a dinner
- 31:31party with a bunch of friends who have seen the meals that
- 31:36she's made for me and are interested in her services.
- 31:40So we're gonna have a dinner party where they can sample a
- 31:43bunch of her different dishes that'll be on her menu.
- 31:46And then they'll also leave with two pack like prepared meals so
- 31:51that they'll know when you buy food from her, this is what
- 31:55you'll get. You'll get a full ready to go
- 31:57meal. Yeah.
- 31:59Carb, protein side sauce. Like full thing.
- 32:04Yeah, ready to go if you want. Like I'm just like, feed me.
- 32:09Yeah, feed me. Like, don't show me the numbers.
- 32:13Yeah, Yeah. Like, I feel great.
- 32:15It tastes great. It's good.
- 32:16But if you. Need if you need the macros.
- 32:19If you need it. Exactly like she can work with
- 32:22you for that. So you'll come taste food and
- 32:25like full, full dinner party Yeah and then leave with food
- 32:28also. Yeah and I'm so we just started
- 32:31planning it yesterday not to be. I already have an invitation
- 32:34drafted up and invite list like daytime.
- 32:38I mean. Yeah, absolutely.
- 32:40I love a party. Like there was a time.
- 32:43I'm really good at hosting them too.
- 32:45Like I love the logistics of it. Because you tell us exactly what
- 32:49you need. And that's like as guess I, I
- 32:51remember we did one movie night where we all had to bring
- 32:55something I think we made or something like that.
- 32:57And you were like, well, somebody's are.
- 32:59I was like, I'm gonna bring drinks.
- 33:00And you're like, Nope, somebody's already brought
- 33:02those. You're gonna bring this.
- 33:02And I was like, that's so helpful.
- 33:04And I was like, but So what kind of thing does it have to be?
- 33:07Up to you, but it has to be in this category.
- 33:09And then like that. And these are the allergies,
- 33:11like whatever to pay attention to.
- 33:12I was like, that is so helpful. Like we're friends and like,
- 33:15some people would probably. I mean, that's like what we need
- 33:18in that communication of like, this is like, it's gonna be
- 33:20great. And also pull your weight.
- 33:22Yeah, do your thing and like, it's gonna be great.
- 33:25And it was, you know, so I loved that.
- 33:28And I remember thinking about that and I was like, that's
- 33:30she's so on it. In another part of my life, I've
- 33:35dreamed of being an event planner and event coordinator
- 33:39and really to have my own event space that I oversee and, like,
- 33:45manage everything to do with. Yeah.
- 33:47And that may still happen someday in the future, but that
- 33:50part of me comes into play in everything that I do.
- 33:55Yeah. So yeah, I think that is
- 33:56definitely where I'm shining in the podcasting project is is the
- 34:02logistics planning the day, planning the guests, thinking
- 34:06about like, OK, what do we need to have with us?
- 34:08What's our checklist for going? Yeah, what can we do without?
- 34:13What do we absolutely need? What's like a bonus item, right?
- 34:17How much time are we going to need?
- 34:18How much time do we have? Weather.
- 34:20Yeah. Weather conditions plan you can
- 34:22plan for but not really sure. Like I'm glad we have the sun
- 34:26too, but we were kind of worried it was going to be cold.
- 34:28Like really? I stopped.
- 34:29And bought an extra sweater because I was a little bit.
- 34:32Unprepared. That was great.
- 34:33Like I wasn't thinking of those things, you know?
- 34:35And so it was like, which I mean, first of all, if it were
- 34:37like a long hike or real hike you always want to think of.
- 34:40But yeah, yeah. I mean, that's so cool.
- 34:43I see that like that role within the podcast, the strategy of it,
- 34:46the like also figuring out like cadence.
- 34:48I imagine of like, OK, well, last time we had somebody on who
- 34:51talked about this kind of stuff and like this time maybe we'll
- 34:54like venture into this. For me, I like, am I like giving
- 34:58good content? Like am I is this helpful?
- 35:00Like what you know, whatever. Like are we, you know, we have,
- 35:03do we have, do we want to get to my moment of that so worth.
- 35:05It we'll we'll we'll transition now we'll.
- 35:09Transition now to can I like my preface question was going to be
- 35:12like, what do you do? Because you always have a
- 35:14vision, right? Like and you adapt, you adapt
- 35:17and that's like the thing you have more or less like you have
- 35:19an idea of what you want to get to like to summit, right?
- 35:22Yeah, Like what the view might be like, right.
- 35:24Yeah, yeah. And so it's kind of like when
- 35:28you do, you help steer, like, are you?
- 35:31Yeah. Like I can feel it a little bit
- 35:33like, you know, how do you make sure you get that?
- 35:35Yeah, definitely in the like listening and being semi aware
- 35:42of time and with some people like we have more of a time
- 35:47limit. With some we're just kind of
- 35:49like rolling with. I mean, we want our time also
- 35:52like for the product when we post it like people, but also
- 35:57like some people are into 45 minute podcast, some people are
- 36:00into three hours. So I think wherever we land,
- 36:04somebody's going to listen. Yeah.
- 36:06But yeah, we will. We do work on like, OK, bring it
- 36:10back, circle back around or like, OK, here's a good pivot
- 36:14point, something that you said is triggering like, OK, now
- 36:17let's move on to this section or with our structure, like
- 36:21essentially once we get to our summit and we sit down, that's
- 36:24where we want to start diving into like what is your
- 36:27background? Where do you come from?
- 36:29And and then to our summit question of like, why are we
- 36:34here today? So yeah, we, we, we guide, we
- 36:38direct and just kind of like go with the flow.
- 36:41And it's just I see how. Things end up it's been great so
- 36:44far, like watching those last two have been.
- 36:47It's like it seems so natural and I am but now being part of
- 36:50the process a little bit, I'm like, oh, there wasn't like much
- 36:53like you didn't tell me. I need to say this exactly
- 36:55right. Like I thought there was
- 36:56actually give me more structure and and I'm glad and like you
- 37:00have it though, you know, like you have the structure.
- 37:02Not to say that it's unstructured, just that like
- 37:04there were potential questions, right?
- 37:06And I and I'm actually feeling more relaxed now that there
- 37:09aren't those, right? Because I had written down, I'm
- 37:11sure I should say this or whatever, but you get like real.
- 37:14We want to be unscripted and structured enough so that
- 37:19there's so that it's replicable so that like people know what
- 37:23they're getting into when they TuneIn to listen to us, that
- 37:26it's not just like a total free for all of nonsense of like
- 37:31value. We have valuable conversations,
- 37:34but we want there to be some through line of consistency of
- 37:39like, OK, every episode they're doing this, this and this and
- 37:42they may tangent around and Heather and I have lots of
- 37:45conversations around our tangents and where we go and how
- 37:49do we get back. And I'm we're both good at it.
- 37:53I think bringing us back to like, OK, let's get back on
- 37:58track to this subject. Yes.
- 37:59And fortunately, so far everybody that we've
- 38:03interviewed, we know a little bit about their background.
- 38:08And so we can guide to, OK, let's get back to this thing
- 38:13that we know that there's value in.
- 38:16But I'm really looking forward to the days when, excuse me,
- 38:20when we don't know the person personally and we're just like
- 38:26learning as we go. Yeah.
- 38:28Oh, I can't wait. To hear that.
- 38:30And like to see you guys. I just like, I know that this is
- 38:33going to be, I love tuning in and I feel like, yeah, there is
- 38:37going to be a time where somebody just reaches out to you
- 38:39probably. I hope so.
- 38:40Yeah, yeah, yeah. I mean, if that hasn't happened
- 38:42already, yeah. There's before we get into yours
- 38:46because talking about future helping people reach out.
- 38:50When my episode comes out, I share a story that obviously it
- 38:57was an impactful outdoor experience, completely changed
- 38:59my life. And there were other people
- 39:03present at that event that I was not connected to.
- 39:07OK. And I have, I have a hope that
- 39:13when my episode comes out someday, somehow those other
- 39:18people who were there, oh, how will hear it.
- 39:22We'll somehow find the episode and we'll hear it and we'll say,
- 39:27Oh my God, I that's my story too.
- 39:30I was there. And they'll reach out and
- 39:33they'll want to come and tell their side.
- 39:36Of the story, I love that. Like it gives me chills to even
- 39:39think about that that could happen, but like.
- 39:43It was such an experience. Same thing, different
- 39:46perspective. Cool.
- 39:47Yeah. And some of those people may,
- 39:51like, I was 13 when it happened. Most of them.
- 39:55Some were older, some were younger.
- 39:57Yeah. And some were like way more
- 39:59involved than I was. I was kind of on the peripheral.
- 40:02But it still completely changed my life.
- 40:03So it had to have completely changed their lives like so I
- 40:07really like. That is my hope that there will
- 40:10be people who find these episodes and have a shared, a
- 40:16literal shared experience, yeah, shared connection with the story
- 40:21and will wanna come on and tell their side.
- 40:23That is so cool. It's gonna happen.
- 40:25You're the ultimate manifesto. You're the one who, like, we had
- 40:29a car, We had a long drive at one point to bend.
- 40:32And you introduced me to like, the thought of manifesting it
- 40:36did say more. OK, Say more.
- 40:38You. It was you.
- 40:39You were like, you were like, I'm really trying.
- 40:41Like I'm in a place in my life where I'm trying to like
- 40:44genuinely bring in the good things that I want to see in my
- 40:50life. And you're like manifesting.
- 40:52And you just kept saying I was like, I don't really know.
- 40:53This is some hippie shit. I don't, I grew up in actually,
- 40:56I should know this, but I don't know.
- 40:58And you're like, no, no, no, it's like, it's literally just
- 41:00like law of attraction and like bringing and, you know, trying
- 41:04to, I can't say it as eloquently as you did, but you were like
- 41:07driving and telling me like this is the kind of when I have a
- 41:10goal or I have a vision of something I want to do or have
- 41:13in my life, I think about it. I incorporate that thought into
- 41:17my life. I, I, I breathe life into that.
- 41:20And then I don't work too hard at it because it, it, if it's
- 41:25meant to be, it'll come right. And like I was kind of, I was
- 41:28like, that's a really like, it's kind of cool.
- 41:30Like as an idea because you do have to work at it but it's like
- 41:33sub work. Yeah.
- 41:35It's like, it's like multitasking.
- 41:37It's like you could like do it, but it's like on, on, you know,
- 41:40on like sleep mode. And then it could come to you,
- 41:44you know. And so of course, as I read more
- 41:46into it and looked into like the idea of like setting things in
- 41:49motion so that things happen without just reaching and
- 41:52grabbing that outcome you want, that's when I understood what
- 41:55you were talking about. But it was my introduction to
- 41:58it. Cool.
- 41:58I love that. And you've truly done that.
- 42:01Yeah. I mean, you've literally done
- 42:02that. And then you helped me do that,
- 42:04right, Without me doing it for for so long.
- 42:07But like from telling me like you know, go like park on
- 42:12someones door and all in this thing, this is how you do it.
- 42:14And assume that they're gonna be happy to see you.
- 42:16Yes, and and, and you did, because I was probably I had
- 42:18brought up probably, I don't remember, but like, but what if
- 42:21they, but what if they do this boy and you're just like, they
- 42:24might, but they also may be like cool.
- 42:27And then that's what I was having the realization that
- 42:30people actually want renewable energy mixes and people like
- 42:32what? A lot of people want that and
- 42:35you just ask or you just put it out there, right.
- 42:40So, so that was you. Cool.
- 42:42Yeah, a lot of you. But anyway, that's so cool.
- 42:45It's really awesome to get reminders of.
- 42:49That you were you. That I've been me all this time.
- 42:52Yeah, absolutely. And that I've been doing the
- 42:54work that I've been doing all along the way.
- 42:57And you've been, you've been inspiring others.
- 42:59And I think that's something that hopefully you do know.
- 43:02But like there's a reason that you keep bringing on people that
- 43:06you're connected to. And if they're really fucking
- 43:08awesome people, we fucking awesome people don't hang around
- 43:12people who aren't fucking awesome.
- 43:13Truth. So yeah, the whole like vibe
- 43:17attack attracts your tribe kind of thing.
- 43:19Yeah, absolutely. And I've weeded through I mean
- 43:21I've had a lot of awesome people in my life that aren't still in
- 43:26my life Yeah sure. And that doesn't make them any
- 43:29less awesome. Yeah, it just like they came in,
- 43:32they showed me something, they taught me something we like
- 43:34learned and get gave and received from one another and
- 43:38got what we needed essentially. And then?
- 43:41OK, it's like a bunch of circles everywhere, right?
- 43:44And then it's like, so at some point they're all intersecting,
- 43:47but we all have our own little yeah circles and and we've
- 43:50definitely stayed in the same ring.
- 43:53But also like we've gone other places and we've gone years
- 43:57without pretty much, but still make a point to like, hey, let's
- 44:02connect. Yeah, absolutely.
- 44:03And on deep things too, which I mean, I think is like our nature
- 44:06#1 and #2 it's like, yeah. So I think the part of our that
- 44:11aligns with you and I has always been that like that balance
- 44:15between like levity and and depth, but also ultimately at
- 44:21the core, we really, really want to find out who we are.
- 44:24Yeah, yeah. Deeply.
- 44:26And like we self actualization is my goal introspection and
- 44:30like, like we want to know for ourselves and for the benefit of
- 44:35others. We like want to figure ourselves
- 44:38out. And I think what I've also
- 44:40learned is like from you, from my life experiences is like we
- 44:46can get, you can get too deep into it.
- 44:49And when you get too deep into it is when you get a little
- 44:51stuck, right? And like, it can be, it can be
- 44:53really dangerous. So it's like it's, I think, I
- 44:56think it's like there's, there's a beauty in, in figuring out who
- 45:01you are by letting yourself be. How deep was that?
- 45:06Yes, yeah, not forcing it, not pushing it, not trying too hard
- 45:12at anything, but like still. Try don't not put effort in, but
- 45:18and we're the most US exist, right?
- 45:21Like I mean, I feel like that's probably true for us, for your
- 45:24other friends, for the people. The reason you're doing this
- 45:27podcast and why I resonate with it so much is like anyone who
- 45:32knows me really well will tell you that I am the most me and I
- 45:37feel the most me and I am the most just like, yeah, I can't
- 45:42even describe it. Not necessarily any specific
- 45:44emotion, but I am so human and and Christy and and a person
- 45:51living and breathing when I'm out here, right?
- 45:54And like, so I think that's the beauty too, of like to bring it
- 45:58back to this community and why I'm excited to be part of it.
- 46:01And like grateful is sometimes you can feel really alone when
- 46:06you aren't with people who feel that way.
- 46:09Who just want to be inside. Inside or connected all the
- 46:13time, right. And I got into spirals of that
- 46:16because that was like. Connected to technology.
- 46:18Technology, yes, that's what I mean.
- 46:19Thank you. Because this is we're connected.
- 46:22Connected like literally like, you know, all the time.
- 46:25And I definitely have fallen into patterns of that and I've
- 46:27made an active effort to pull away.
- 46:30And really the last couple, a nice Raven is coming by.
- 46:33Hey buddy. And and so yeah, but I'm, I'm
- 46:39definitely the most calm, the most like the best self, to put
- 46:45it as cliche as possible. Centered, grounded, relaxed,
- 46:49joyful, at ease, probably have the best like cadence in your
- 46:55breath. Probably.
- 46:56I'm actually breathing, yeah, yeah.
- 46:58Which is rare for me so. Yeah, yeah, They say that breath
- 47:03happens naturally and we don't have to think about it.
- 47:05But boy do I have to think about it.
- 47:07I've actually. Thought of doing breath work,
- 47:10you know, I need to just do that and I need to do therapy and
- 47:14breath work, but I I need to breathe more and I need to learn
- 47:17how. Same.
- 47:18Yeah, relearn, I should say, right.
- 47:21Because as as babies, right, we, we, we, we, we pretty hard.
- 47:25Yeah, pretty hard. A lot of what we're.
- 47:27Doing is just breathing. We're just breathing and we're
- 47:30screaming and doing all those things, but we are
- 47:32diaphragmatically breathing in theatre.
- 47:36That was something I always struggled with.
- 47:38So I'm, I'm not, I'm a chest breathe.
- 47:40Oh, I'm so sorry. I'm so sorry.
