Transcript
- Lucas: Hey Luna, welcome back to another episode of Learn Amharic with Fexingo. Luna: Hey Lucas! I'm so ready. What are we diving into today? Lucas: Well, you know how we've been to the café before and ordered coffee and tea? Luna: Oh yeah, I remember that. But I'm always craving something sweet with my coffee. Lucas: Exactly. Today we're going to the café again, but this time we're ordering cake. Luna: Cake? That's perfect! I love cake. So how do I ask if they have cake? Lucas: Great question. First, let's learn the word for cake. It's ኬክ. Luna: ኬክ. That sounds like 'cake' but with a little twist. Lucas: Yes, it's borrowed from English. Now, to ask 'Do you have cake?' we say ኬክ አለ? Luna: ኬክ አለ? Lucas: Perfect. That literally means 'Cake exists?' but it's how you ask. Now you try. Luna: ኬክ አለ? Okay, got it. So then if I want to say 'I want cake', what's that? Lucas: That's ኬክ እፈልጋለሁ. Let's break it down: ኬክ is cake, እፈልጋለሁ means 'I want'. Luna: ኬክ እፈልጋለሁ. I want cake. Say it with me: ኬክ እፈልጋለሁ. Lucas: Nice. But maybe you want a specific kind. So we can ask 'What kind of cake do you have?' That is ምን አይነት ኬክ አለ? Luna: ምን አይነት ኬክ አለ? That's a mouthful. Let me try: ምን አይነት ኬክ አለ? Lucas: Great effort. ምን means 'what', አይነት means 'kind'. So together, 'what kind of cake?' Luna: Okay, I think I've got it. So if I want chocolate cake, I'd say ቸኮሌት ኬክ እፈልጋለሁ? Lucas: Exactly! ቸኮሌት is chocolate, so ቸኮሌት ኬክ እፈልጋለሁ. You're a natural. Luna: Yay! And after I eat it, I can say 'The cake is sweet.' Right? Lucas: Right. That's ኬኩ ጣፋጭ ነው. ኬኩ means 'the cake', ጣፋጭ means 'sweet', ነው is 'is'. Luna: ኬኩ ጣፋጭ ነው. I hope it is! Now let's do a little role-play. I'm at the café, and you're the server. Lucas: Sure. I'll start. እንኳን ደህና መጣህ. ኬክ አለ? Luna: Umm, let's see. I say: አዎ፣ ኬክ አለ. ምን አይነት ኬክ ይፈልጋሉ? Lucas: Oh good, you're playing the server! Okay, as customer: ቸኮሌት ኬክ እፈልጋለሁ. Luna: Perfect. So I'd hand you the cake and say: እነሆ። ኬኩ ጣፋጭ ነው. Lucas: Excellent! Now, before we wrap up, I want to mention something quick. Luna: What's that? Lucas: You know how we're able to make these episodes ad-free and keep them coming? Luna: Yeah, I love that there are no commercials interrupting our lesson. Lucas: Well, that's because some listeners chip in monthly at buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo. It's a small group, but they literally fund the show. Luna: That's awesome. If Fexingo has been helping you learn Amharic, maybe consider joining them. It keeps us going. Lucas: Yeah, no pressure at all. Now back to cake! Let's practice one more time. Repeat after me: ኬክ አለ? Luna: ኬክ አለ? Lucas: ኬክ እፈልጋለሁ. Luna: ኬክ እፈልጋለሁ. Lucas: ቸኮሌት ኬክ እፈልጋለሁ. Luna: ቸኮሌት ኬክ እፈልጋለሁ. Lucas: And if it's good, you say ኬኩ ጣፋጭ ነው. Luna: ኬኩ ጣፋጭ ነው. I'm getting hungry! Lucas: Same. So keep practicing these phrases until next time. We'll have more sweet lessons for you. Luna: See you then! ደህና ሁን!
