Latest / Sri Aurobindo Studies / The Power of the Spiritual Consciousness Is Needed to Overcome the Limitations of the Mental Approach to Existence

- 0:00As the mental consciousness awakens, particularly if there's
- 0:04an influence coming from the psychic being or from the
- 0:07spiritual planes pressing down on the mental being, we become
- 0:12aware of virtually endless problems, issues, difficulties,
- 0:16imbalances, disharmonies, and outright conflicts in the world
- 0:21and how we interact with each other and our environment.
- 0:26Those with a positive attitude and energy naturally want to do
- 0:30something to help straighten this out.
- 0:33They try many things. This is how humanity comes up
- 0:37with solutions based on technology or economic system
- 0:41adjustments, scientific advancements that are supposed
- 0:44to solve some issue or other political systems, religious
- 0:49doctrines or sociological improvements, as well as
- 0:54enhancements in education, lawmaking, et cetera.
- 0:59Eventually competing ideas are held by competing factions and a
- 1:04form of gridlock occurs and nothing can be done.
- 1:09When we become frustrated at slow progress, we try
- 1:12authoritarian rule. This has its own serious
- 1:15drawbacks, with a reliance on one sided short term solutions
- 1:20provided generally more focused on keeping the authoritarians in
- 1:24power than on actually solving any of humanity's issues.
- 1:29And thus we struggle, suffer and face ever increasing
- 1:34dislocations, disharmonies, obstacles and existential
- 1:40threats. This process occurs due to the
- 1:44limitations of the mental power and its intermixture with the
- 1:47vital force based in desire and the actual difficulties of
- 1:52managing physical nature. The natural forces that tend to
- 1:56bring about balance in the physical environment and then as
- 2:00the vital force evolves in the interaction between the physical
- 2:05and vital, are disrupted with the evolution of mind.
- 2:10Which by nature has a somewhat linear approach to things and
- 2:13does not see or take into account all the myriad aspects
- 2:18that go into making a comprehensive and complete
- 2:21understanding that can act to create a New Balance and a new
- 2:25harmony. Each mental intervention is
- 2:29intended to bring a progress, and it generally does in One
- 2:33Direction or another, but it also has a wide variety of
- 2:39unintended consequences. Once the developed mental
- 2:44consciousness becomes aware of this dynamic, it begins to
- 2:47realize that the solution does not lie in mental planning or
- 2:51processes, but in the evolution and development of a next stage
- 2:56of consciousness in the evolutionary scale.
- 3:00A stage which can comprehend the entirety of the issues and
- 3:04forces at work and which can know the harmonious balance that
- 3:08needs to be achieved and maintained.
- 3:11This is then the place where the spiritual consciousness as
- 3:15manifested in what tree or a window and the Mother call the
- 3:19Super mental consciousness comes into play.
- 3:24The spiritual consciousness does not rely on mental argument, but
- 3:28on the force of its consciousness in and of itself
- 3:32in creating an atmosphere and spiritual pressure that helps
- 3:36all beings respond in effective and harmonious ways.
- 3:43The Mother observes quote, and as soon as one is turned towards
- 3:47the spiritual life and reality, one touches the Infinite, the
- 3:52eternal, and there can no longer be any question of a greater or
- 3:57smaller number of capacities or possibilities.
- 4:01It is the mental conception of spiritual life which may say
- 4:04that one has more or less capacity to live spiritually,
- 4:08but this is not at all an adequate statement.
- 4:12What may be said is that one is more or less ready for the
- 4:15decisive and total reversal. In reality.
- 4:19It is the mental capacity to withdraw from ordinary
- 4:23activities and to set out in search of the spiritual life
- 4:28which can be measured. But so long as one is in the
- 4:32mental field, in this state as it were, on this plane of
- 4:36consciousness, 1 can't do much for others, either for life in
- 4:41general or for particular individuals, because one doesn't
- 4:46have the certitude oneself, 1 doesn't have the definitive
- 4:50experience. The consciousness has not been
- 4:53established in the spiritual world.
- 4:56And all that can be said is that they are mental activities which
- 5:00have their good and bad sides, but not much power, and in any
- 5:05case not this power of spiritual contagion, which is the only
- 5:11true effective power. The only thing that is truly
- 5:16effective is the possibility of transferring to others, the
- 5:20state of consciousness in which one lives oneself.
- 5:24But this power cannot be invented, 1 cannot imitate it,
- 5:29cannot seem to have it. It only comes spontaneously when
- 5:33one is established in that state oneself, when one lives within
- 5:38it and not when one is trying to live within it, when one is
- 5:43there. And that is why all those who
- 5:46truly have a spiritual life cannot be deceived.
- 5:51An imitation of spiritual life may delude people who still live
- 5:55in the mind, but those who have realized this reversal of
- 5:59consciousness in themselves, whose relation with the outer
- 6:03being is completely different, cannot be deceived and cannot
- 6:08make a mistake. End Quote.
