Transcript
- 0:02Welcome in to a very exciting episode of the scene.
- 0:04I'm your host, Bubba Starts.
- 0:05And with me today is executive producer of CD broadcasting, Heard on bumping ninety six point
- 0:12three FM in Memphis, Tennessee, and all around the world at 96.3.com.
- 0:18Charles Davis.
- 0:19Charles, welcome to the show.
- 0:21Such a pleasure to be here.
- 0:23Thank you for inviting me on.
- 0:25Well, the pleasure's all mine.
- 0:27We we're new friends.
- 0:29We just spoke for the first time, just a few days ago, but, you got some really awesome
- 0:35stuff going on down there in the Memphis area, and I can't wait to be a part of it.
- 0:39So I wanted to get you on here as soon as possible, let you introduce yourself to our
- 0:43people, and and tell them in your own words what you're doing.
- 0:46So, you don't have to go all the way back to the very beginning, but, give us a little
- 0:51rundown of what, you know, CD broadcasting has been up to.
- 0:54I know you're hitting some anniversaries this month.
- 0:56So, give us a little rundown here, and then we'll talk about what we're, getting together
- 1:00for on Juneteenth.
- 1:03Well, I've been supporting and getting businesses known all over the world since
- 1:0702/2017, this year being my anniversary.
- 1:10Also, with Barbara ninety six point three, this is my one year anniversary.
- 1:14I put it on the radio.
- 1:15It started off with just social media management and marketing.
- 1:18Became part of the broadcast association in 2020, and I've been just working on getting as
- 1:23many business, more business as I can.
- 1:26I believe in that theory that we help enough other people get what they want, you'll get
- 1:30what you want.
- 1:31So I've been working on getting what I want by helping other people get what they want.
- 1:36I love it.
- 1:37So you really come from the kind of business consulting world?
- 1:44Yeah.
- 1:44I've been I've been running businesses for I hate to say my age when I tell you how long,
- 1:49but I've opened my first business over twenty years ago.
- 1:52And when I did that, I had to go through learning the hard way.
- 1:55I climbed the regional sales manager chart here with another corporation that did all of my
- 2:01sales training, my corporate sales training.
- 2:03I'm a graduate of Strayer University with my degree in business.
- 2:07That is a bachelor's in business management with a minor in recruiting Mhmm.
- 2:13Human resources, I call it.
- 2:14But with that, I've run into a lot of people.
- 2:17I've helped a lot of people.
- 2:18I've run into a lot of business owners, and we did do one year of Africans Networking
- 2:24Worldwide that became Networking Worldwide where we did four hours of doing different
- 2:29business on on social media.
- 2:31We did that every month for a whole year.
- 2:34We did a anniversary show where we did birthday awards dinner.
- 2:37We gave out awards to all these other businesses.
- 2:39This year, for Juneteenth, we're bringing those hundred businesses locally all out on June 19
- 2:45from 11AM to 5PM, where they're able to come out, eat that day, and be able to eat from now
- 2:51on by using the network to make our network.
- 2:55From now on, have choice, all business owners, entrepreneurs.
- 2:58I can reach out, and my phones are busy.
- 3:01I've been visiting people, rebuilding people, contacting me contacting people.
- 3:07So, you know, I just contacted.
- 3:09I'm like, man, I have so many people.
- 3:10I'm still getting a call.
- 3:11I promise you.
- 3:12Think a hundred business owners.
- 3:14I've contacted, and I still got that.
- 3:16And so we gotta say, we're contacting over a hundred business owners to look at and make
- 3:20sure we have a hundred people out there at this event.
- 3:24So we're going over the top.
- 3:25Glad to have you involved as well as Pablo on time.
- 3:29I think he's one of the great assets to have around.
- 3:31He did my birthday awards dinner, and I was glad to have that.
- 3:34So if his connection's working in my network, I call him a sheep team because he's got ears to
- 3:39the scene.
- 3:40I forget the he has the mind.
- 3:41But believe me, he's got his ears to the scene.
- 3:44So with that, I was like, yeah, man.
- 3:46That's where your network is.
- 3:48He's a, oh, man.
- 3:48I got plenty for a guy to wait for me to do another one.
- 3:51I said, let's do it.
- 3:52And here we are moving right along for.
- 3:55And I hope that everyone in the Memphis area, even if you're not, want to even travel, fly,
- 4:00and fly out.
- 4:00Do what you have to do.
- 4:01Something to get those jets.
- 4:03Get over to Memphis.
- 4:04Because I'm gimping.
- 4:05We wanna see you in the house.
- 4:06If you ain't got those jackets, you can fly here.
- 4:08You can You can bus here.
- 4:10If you're already here, it's real easy.
- 4:121069 MLK Boulevard.
- 4:14We don't have boots on the ground where you come in that day, and you'll be able eat from
- 4:19now on.
- 4:19We're gonna make our network work for our network.
- 4:23Yes, sir.
- 4:24Oh my goodness.
- 4:24I can't believe you just said that.
- 4:26A good friend of mine, his name is Marvellis.
- 4:29He has that in a lyric of one of his songs.
- 4:31My network is my net worth, and it's something that I have, carried with me for a long time in
- 4:39business in any business, I think.
- 4:42It's not always what you know.
- 4:43It's who you know, and that's why events like, you know, boots on the ground here is so
- 4:49important.
- 4:49Right?
- 4:50And these these style of of things that we're doing, you know, you more in the business world
- 4:56locally in the Memphis scene doing that is in part, it's the same thing that we're doing out
- 5:01here in a digital artist space as well, making connections so that, you know, when you wanna
- 5:08go on tour, all you gotta do is to access that network to get where you want to go.
- 5:15Right?
- 5:16And I was thrilled.
- 5:18I was thrilled to see your event crop up.
- 5:20I'm absolutely just really excited to get down.
- 5:24I've never been to Memphis, so this will be a great introduction for me to to land there.
- 5:29And this is how I like to do it, sir.
- 5:31I like to land in a town.
- 5:32I wanna meet everybody all at once.
- 5:33Right?
- 5:34I don't wanna have to come back 50 times to try and meet everybody.
- 5:37So I would much rather dial in to someone as yourself who's already got the event going and
- 5:43be able to come in and just add our value to that.
- 5:46Right?
- 5:47Getting these business owners on camera at the event for five minutes to introduce themselves
- 5:52so we can air that on our network as well.
- 5:55And we can do do these, the things that are necessary for growth, for businesses to grow.
- 6:02And and it doesn't necessarily have to be, you know, just in your local market.
- 6:08Having some brand awareness out on the national level, even if you are a small mom and pop
- 6:13shop, just in Memphis, it's still good to have that global recognition.
- 6:20And it's it's it's important to get out, and you gotta meet these people.
- 6:24You gotta shake some hands.
- 6:26You you you gotta kiss some babies occasionally.
- 6:28Right?
- 6:29And, make sure you don't do it in reverse and kiss some hands and shake some babies.
- 6:33People don't like that.
- 6:37You know, you said it like a good one to say, you know, just you're networking even for it is
- 6:41not only these tools, know, also when you know them.
- 6:45Because different times, you're in different places, different things, things, different
- 6:51places.
- 6:51And so you've been in my background, I've been all over the country.
- 6:56I haven't left The United States.
- 6:57I've been from top to bottom back to the top to bottom again.
- 7:01I'm from Chicago, originally.
- 7:03I moved to the state of Minnesota State, the East Saint Paul for two years.
- 7:07And I went back to Chicago.
- 7:08Then I moved to Tennessee in February.
- 7:12I've been to the state of Washington for two years, started in 02/2018, and I've been here
- 7:17again since 2020.
- 7:19I'm a regional sales manager type in Tennessee, Arkansas, Mississippi with my reason, and I've
- 7:25been all over.
- 7:25I've got promotions in Ohio, Florida, you name it.
- 7:29And with that, I've been all over the country, seeing all different places, and I've had a lot
- 7:33of different business owners.
- 7:34And why I say, you know, one thing that every business wants is worth by it, and I'm the guy
- 7:39to help them get there one way or another.
- 7:42I we've touched on a lot of the same areas.
- 7:45So I was actually born, in Suwanee, Tennessee, and, I've been spending a lot of time up in
- 7:52that Minneapolis Saint Paul area in the last twelve months or so building up the network
- 7:57there.
- 7:57So I I bet when we, get down to brass tacks that we got a lot of mutual friends or at least
- 8:04a lot of overlap in the areas that that we've been to.
- 8:08And, it helps.
- 8:09Right?
- 8:09And it helps to have some, some seasoning maybe.
- 8:14Right?
- 8:14You've been around cultures and different, you know, different areas of the country.
- 8:20Obviously, it's all different.
- 8:21South Dakota a lot different than Memphis is in every single way.
- 8:25Probably most likely right now, it's just the weather where it's still 70 and fairly decent
- 8:32here.
- 8:32You probably pushing nineties and 95 humidity in Memphis.
- 8:36And
- 8:37Yeah.
- 8:37Yeah.
- 8:3891 degrees right down here in Memphis.
- 8:40So Oh, baby.
- 8:41I better
- 8:43my wardrobe's all shorts and tank tops, Charles.
- 8:46There you go.
- 8:47There you go.
- 8:49Well, I cannot wait to get down.
- 8:52Give us a little bit more.
- 8:53I know you kinda ran over it a little bit, but I know it's more than just connection at, the
- 8:58Juneteenth event.
- 8:59You also got some education.
- 9:01You got a couple of keynote speakers that are gonna be sharing some wisdom.
- 9:04Tell us a little bit more about the event coming up here in a few short weeks.
- 9:08We're doing everything.
- 9:09It's just gonna have the food trucks coming out, so we can definitely still eat like
- 9:13everyone likes to do on Juneteenth.
- 9:15We also are gonna have artists coming to perform from the beginning till the end, but we
- 9:20have phenomenal speakers.
- 9:22These speakers are gonna be speaking on how to start a business, how to get bills and credit,
- 9:27personal credit.
- 9:28We also have life insurance and real estate, keynote speakers.
- 9:32We also have Tina Silton, our program director from Legacy six point three, seeing how get on
- 9:37the radio.
- 9:38We also have field director, Kristen Taylor, plenty of coffee from Memphis' home.
- 9:57Memphis' coffee.
- 10:00We're giving out samples of this coffee, and you can definitely the first today.
- 10:03That's Memphis' home.
- 10:05Memphis' Coffee will be in the house.
- 10:07A lot of the other gems will be there.
- 10:09I can go down the list.
- 10:11I think your open show.
- 10:12Right?
- 10:12Start talking about all those.
- 10:14But I'm just talking to keep the old people.
- 10:16I wanted to say, shout out.
- 10:17It was sweet secret, who was one of our trucks to get on board.
- 10:21I was thinking about Minnesota.
- 10:52I love it.
- 10:52I I feel like we were destined to run into each other at some point, Charles.
- 10:57Everything in due time everything in due time, when it's time we're set to do this, we have
- 11:04ready.
- 11:04And so you're like, hey.
- 11:05Can we get it drawn up?
- 11:07Like, let's do it.
- 11:07Let's look at I'm glad we can log in there with some with some of our we getting closest to the
- 11:12event.
- 11:13I've been in Midland on the food hubs as well as speaking to a couple other speakers.
- 11:17I do wanna try to fill them throughout the whole event and make sure we have good food and
- 11:22good music.
- 11:23All of us have a great time and lose on the ground.
- 11:27It's gonna be an awesome time.
- 11:29I'm really looking forward to some Memphis barbecue.
- 11:32I am looking forward to some hot, sweaty weather.
- 11:35I am looking I am looking forward to performing, you know, with my brother, El
- 11:41Pablo, one time.
- 11:43We've already spoken to a few great artists down there in that Memphis area.
- 11:47I mean, no lack of talent in Memphis when it comes to music, a city known for its deep roots
- 11:53in music.
- 11:55And and now we get to really start to launch some businesses from that.
- 12:00And one thing we talk a lot about on our program here is that if you are an artist of
- 12:06any kind, really, right, not just music, but you could be a filmmaker or any kind of
- 12:10creative, right, that you are a business.
- 12:13And whether you have a a business license yet, you should.
- 12:17A tax ID, you should.
- 12:20Whether you have the the the physical business yet, you are a business, and you need to treat
- 12:26your art and your brand accordingly.
- 12:30And that's a lot of what we're trying to do is trying to educate, especially this younger
- 12:34generation coming up.
- 12:36The world's a lot different.
- 12:37Right?
- 12:37When when I came up, you know, early two thousands, graduating high school and having
- 12:42dreams of getting out there and being a musician, it was, well, you gotta go to
- 12:47Nashville or you gotta go to Los Angeles or you gotta go to New York.
- 12:50And now I've done more for my career in the last year sitting in my damn garage in the
- 12:55middle of nowhere in South Dakota than I ever did when I lived in Los Angeles.
- 13:00So, be that what it is, I think what you're doing is so important to the world and
- 13:05especially to, you know, in the culture, in the black culture, you know, obviously, having it
- 13:12on June 19, Juneteenth, is a big deal.
- 13:15It's, it's important.
- 13:17It's important that everyone, you know, not just people that look like me or people that
- 13:23look like you, everyone start treating their lives and their brand a lot differently.
- 13:28And they're gonna do so much more for themselves than what any company, any
- 13:32corporation is ever gonna do for them.
- 13:35You gotta get out there and you gotta advocate for yourself.
- 13:38And it sounds like Charles Davis as well as the scene projects, you know, bumping 96.3.
- 13:45We all have a shared mission in educating those folks into how to do that.
- 13:51Here here is the the, you know, the the playbook, if you will.
- 13:57The workbook is more like it probably because none of this happens without you, getting your
- 14:02own boots on the ground and doing the thing yourself.
- 14:06Well, that's been our motto.
- 14:07That's when I started the business as Steve broadcast and started off with W.
- 14:12Floyd.
- 14:12But because we play all day, we talk about the things we need to know.
- 14:16Steve broadcast is now Charles Davis, as well as my.
- 14:22Some of the things we need to know.
- 14:24I'm on 96.3 every Saturday, 3PM to 4PM.
- 14:29They can offer a list worldwide at 963.com.
- 14:33That's bewmtin963.com.
- 14:38With that, it's about making sure we solve the things we need to know.
- 14:41I'm speaking about entrepreneurship, but also, I'll tell people that need to have multiple
- 14:46streams of income.
- 14:47Now I definitely have to do that.
- 14:49It's not just because, you know, I like money.
- 14:51It's because I have a lot of children.
- 14:52You know what saying?
- 14:53And then I like to be able to eat too.
- 14:55So you know, you gotta have three income.
- 14:56I mentioned the kids are eating.
- 14:58It makes you got a family up to make the bills today.
- 15:01And then the people that have because I'm 92.
- 15:04So with all that, I worked several different positions.
- 15:07I am CEO of CBD broadcast, executive producer for the channel on ninety six point three, but
- 15:13I also do other jobs.
- 15:15I'm a real estate investor.
- 15:17I've been doing that since 2020.
- 15:19I'll be working on my fourth deal coming up here in Memphis.
- 15:22I've helped a lot of people get their bag, and this year is about seeking for our chance to
- 15:26get the bag.
- 15:27The only way it's gonna work is to get to their bag.
- 15:31So that's what I've been working hard for 2025, going through the year and coming for our
- 15:35anniversary.
- 15:36We're like, cranking up for our anniversary.
- 15:38That's where everybody get in the bag, and then I'll get my bag.
- 15:43CD broadcasting.
- 15:45Everybody gets a bag.
- 15:47That's it.
- 15:48Well, you said it all, sir.
- 15:50I appreciate your time today.
- 15:52I can't wait to shake your hand in person and to take part in this beautiful event.
- 15:56That is Juneteenth.
- 15:58That is coming up quick, folks.
- 16:00Make sure you're there.
- 16:01If you're not there in the Memphis local area, Charles Davis says fly your ass in.
- 16:06You gotta be here.
- 16:07Believe it.
- 16:08Let's go.
- 16:35You can network too.
- 16:36If you're not able to, you can go the same as out of it.
- 16:39I'll pay, but we can get.
- 16:40But being there, nothing like being in person and be able act with fear of all these
- 16:47entrepreneurs.
- 16:48Because the business owner, they're just entrepreneur.
- 16:50Just move a little forward in thinking about it.
- 16:52They started in their boots, and got to do it.
- 16:55So those people are being what you might want to sponsor to do.
- 16:58What is the next indicator there?
- 16:59There's somebody in we're in all kinds of industries in this event.
- 17:03You better believe whatever you're doing, there's someone who's already done it.
- 17:06So you wanna follow those footprints so you know how to do what you gotta do.
- 17:10But something from my dad, my dad said, when you find something you wanna do, just find
- 17:14someone who's successful with it and just follow the blueprint.
- 17:17So those blueprints will be walking around in the event, boots on the ground, chance for you
- 17:21to come eat that today, and you're eat from now on, Juneteenth.
- 17:25I just hope you stay tuned because I've been on the fence all the time, but this is the big
- 17:29one, Juneteenth, was on the ground, big one right here in Memphis, Tennessee, come out.
- 17:34He was there.
- 17:35He can be able eat now on.
- 17:38Mr.
- 17:38Charles Davis, for being part of the scene.
- 17:42My pleasure, man.
- 17:43My pleasure.
