- 0:00What about scrap?
- 0:01>> What do you What do you see in him? I
- 0:03know I mean obviously you had a lift or
- 0:06whatever, but is he just still a raw
- 0:09athlete moving the corner? Do you feel
- 0:11like where do you feel like he's at?
- 0:12Where is his season? Tell me about
- 0:14>> Man, he has a tremendous ceiling, man.
- 0:15You know, he's obviously he raw
- 0:17position. You know, in high school he
- 0:18played quarterback, some linebacker,
- 0:20some DB and last year at me and at
- 0:22another thing he played receiver. But
- 0:24his ceiling is through the roof, man.
- 0:25Got good ball skills, very fast,
- 0:27physical. Um it's going to be a process
- 0:30for him pretty much get him in the fold
- 0:31at quarterback but when it clicks man he
- 0:33going to be pretty much a draft pick I
- 0:34think in my opinion.
- 0:35>> What's your approach to someone like him
- 0:37that in this day and age where you're
- 0:38like all right here's your potential
- 0:41that you got to stay you got to stick it
- 0:43out. How do you sort of approach guys
- 0:44like that? You can't get too far ahead
- 0:46of yourself. You don't want to have
- 0:47conversations now that you have down the
- 0:50road. But a guy like that that has a
- 0:51ceiling that you're like you're going to
- 0:52need a little bit of time. So don't you
- 0:54come in don't be impatient or whatever.
- 0:56How do you sort of deal with Mike?
- 0:58>> Man, I think it all it all starts in
- 0:59recruiting, you know, with uh when I
- 1:00recruit and scrap at South Florida, I
- 1:02kind of like look man, this is my plan
- 1:03for you. Will it be a day one thing? No,
- 1:05but it pretty much be a three, four, a
- 1:06three or four year thing for him. And
- 1:08he's pretty much when he got in the
- 1:09portal, we had the same talk. I said,
- 1:10"Look, day one thing. It's not going to
- 1:12be a day one thing for you. Day, year
- 1:14three, year four is a process." And
- 1:17pretty much he's pretty much bought in.
- 1:18You know, every day he grabbed me for
- 1:19five minutes. Hey coach, let's go over
- 1:21this. I have to practice it five minutes
- 1:23a day, man. This coach, this what I got
- 1:24to do to get better. and he pretty much
- 1:25been receptive to everything we told
- 1:27been telling him as far as like the tech
- 1:29got we got to work on and I'm in I'm
- 1:31very excited about his future know this
- 1:34last two workouts we had he been pretty
- 1:36much every day
- 1:38>> I know it's uh probably too way too
- 1:40early to be worrying about you know
- 1:41who's boundary who's going who's a
- 1:42nickel things like that how many guys do
- 1:44you do you want to have that you can put
- 1:46out there do you expect to be able to
- 1:47play back at the corner
- 1:51>> man with me man um obviously at one time
- 1:53you play the two corners
- 1:55But I I I usually rotate four guys that
- 1:58corner, you know, because, you know, we
- 2:00this pretty much the day and age, you
- 2:02can't play just two guys whole game.
- 2:03They get tired. So, even back in my days
- 2:05at uh Miami, I always rotated for a
- 2:07corner. So, I'm looking for the the best
- 2:10that compete um and go from there.
- 2:12>> What do you see in Blake would be when
- 2:14you watch what he was watch like where
- 2:17his ceiling's at? Obviously, that's a
- 2:18guy that Durkin was high on as well, but
- 2:20what do you see now? Man, Blake is a guy
- 2:21that do it all. He can play inside,
- 2:23outside, and he's a guy that pretty we
- 2:25going to pretty much lean on a lot this
- 2:26year and pretty much get us out of games
- 2:27and help us win games because he got
- 2:30that play some nickel, you know, some
- 2:31field corner, some boundary corner. And
- 2:33pretty much just meeting a kid, man, he
- 2:35brings a energy that, you know, you want
- 2:37very confident. Um, and the playbook,
- 2:40man, he knows it inside and out. And for
- 2:42a young guy, you pretty much that's very
- 2:44promising. So, I'm excited for him now.
- 2:45I'm very excited.
- 2:46How long does it take for you to figure
- 2:48out kind of where your group is at? I
- 2:51mean, is it is it by the end of spring
- 2:53you have an idea? Is it all the way in
- 2:54next fall? Like what I guess maybe going
- 2:56into the spring and thinking about the
- 2:58spring, where do you want to be with
- 3:00this? You got a bunch of transfers. You
- 3:02got some some guys coming back that
- 3:03you're not as familiar with. What do you
- 3:04want to know?
- 3:05>> Oh, I just want to know, man, are these
- 3:06guys compete? You know, and it's pretty
- 3:08much just watching these guys film from
- 3:09last year, you know, Andre Jordan film,
- 3:11Shamar film, Gavin Fam. I know these
- 3:14guys competing. you know, now I got
- 3:15pretty much all these personalities from
- 3:17different different places in one room
- 3:19and pretty much them guys, hey, this
- 3:20part of one mission, be the best group
- 3:22in the country. Um, and so far they got
- 3:24these guys have been doing that. All
- 3:25these guys pretty much been locked in,
- 3:27you know, all these guys like brothers
- 3:28and I'm excited to see how this thing
- 3:31shake out in spring. I think for the the
- 3:32spring thing, I want to figure out, you
- 3:34know, who going to be the top four for
- 3:35me. You know what I'm saying? And right
- 3:37now, I told the guys, man, day one, I'm
- 3:39rolling the ball out there and the the
- 3:41top four shake out steps out.
- 3:48I know you probably asked about a bit,
- 3:50but getting Andre Jordan, uh, you know,
- 3:52he was a guy that his numbers like
- 3:53really really good in the Big 10. What
- 3:55does he bring to the table for you?
- 3:56>> Man, he brings uh, one, he brings a
- 3:59brings a competitive attitude, you know,
- 4:01to the to the team, you know, that we
- 4:03that we want. Um, a lot of snaps, you
- 4:07know, he played against the best at
- 4:08Indiana, Ohio State, you Um, those were
- 4:11the two games I watched, you know, I was
- 4:13like, man, this my guy, you know, this
- 4:14guy I need, you know, as far as playing
- 4:16against Jeremiah Smith, you know, those
- 4:17guys Indiana, we pretty much didn't
- 4:18shout it for nothing. Um, and just
- 4:21having him, you know, gives me like,
- 4:22okay, man, like I know I got a guy that
- 4:24got that play with experience. So, we
- 4:26play this that's done with the schedule.
- 4:28He's not going to show me for nothing.
- 4:30talk about like the decision to go get
- 4:32strain. It's just like the guy played
- 4:35came in was going to be a wide receiver
- 4:36and put him in the corner here and just
- 4:38like what stands out about him, you
- 4:41know, not often you get a transfer and
- 4:42they're like, "All right, we're
- 4:43switching him to another side of the
- 4:45ball." Now I think the biggest thing for
- 4:46me that stood out for Strat was man his
- 4:48intentions like he's a kid that out of
- 4:50high school ran four threes um 40 like
- 4:5330 inch ver good balls being very
- 4:55physical and you pretty much want to
- 4:56mold all those tools together to become
- 4:58a NFL quarterback and pretty much that's
- 5:00my whole thing my sell point to him in
- 5:01recruiting look like you're not a
- 5:03finished product yet but you have the
- 5:05tools to become one and he's bought into
- 5:07the system he bought into like our
- 5:09vision for him and I'm excited man like
- 5:11you see the kid you walk around man you
- 5:12look like a NFL quarterback about 6'2
- 5:1520 lb running 43.
- 5:17>> Now you got to put all those tools
- 5:18together to become.
- 5:20>> Correct me if I'm wrong, but y'all had a
- 5:21relationship with him before he went to
- 5:22Notre Dame.
- 5:23>> Yeah, he was committed to it at South
- 5:24Florida. You know, I thought having me a
- 5:26diamond rep and then he started balling
- 5:27and everybody started to call him and
- 5:29and Notre Dame rightfully so, man. Um
- 5:32didn't work out there and then um he got
- 5:33in a port, gave me a call, let's try
- 5:35this thing out, man, you know. So great
- 5:37family, great coach, a high school coach
- 5:39and um great kid.
- 5:42>> During spring practice, What's the
- 5:44priority or two at your position? What
- 5:46do you want to leave spring practice
- 5:47getting better at and what what things?
- 5:49>> I think the biggest thing I want to get
- 5:51better at, man, in the spring practice
- 5:52is attacking the ball at the high point,
- 5:54man. Making plays on the ball. You know
- 5:55what I'm saying? I think that's what
- 5:57wins games, man. Like I my motto is they
- 5:59throw, we catch it. I want that's one of
- 6:01them. And then two, man, be be the most
- 6:03competitive group in the field, you
- 6:04know? So those are the two things I'm
- 6:06hopping on right now, you know, doing
- 6:07meetings, man. Like getting the ball and
- 6:08they throw it and being the most
- 6:10competitive one. with the wide open
- 6:12offenses that that you're going to face.
- 6:14You're going to play a bunch of DBs in a
- 6:16game, but do you can you have a a depth
- 6:18chart, so to speak, done by spring
- 6:19practice? Is that ongoing throughout
- 6:21preseason camp?
- 6:22>> I think you I think you I have an idea
- 6:24at the end of spring who will be the
- 6:26starters, but you really want to have a
- 6:27a true set depth until, excuse me, after
- 6:31fall camp. So, it's going to be a I have
- 6:33an idea to see, okay, man, this guy
- 6:35probably be here, be there, but I won't
- 6:37have a official answer until fall camp.
- 6:40knowing that you haven't had a chance to
- 6:42actually have a spring practice yet.
- 6:43You've been around these guys a little
- 6:44bit. What are first impressions of your
- 6:46of your
- 6:48>> Man, these guys are huge. They're
- 6:49they're huge and they can they can fly,
- 6:51you know. Um just watching Shamar knock
- 6:54just out there just running around, man.
- 6:56He's a kid that's like 6'2,
- 6:59really fast. Um very aggressive. You
- 7:01look at guys like Rashan Pleasant, you
- 7:03know, Andre Jordan, like these guys are
- 7:056'1, 6'2 and they can go. Um, that's
- 7:08something that stand out to me, you
- 7:09know, because I was a tall guy. I wasn't
- 7:11as big as those guys, but those but the
- 7:12same tall and fast. And I'm excited, you
- 7:15know, for the spring ball to see how
- 7:16these guys out there compete.
- 7:18>> Demarcus, where when you're out there
- 7:19recruiting, what are you looking for in
- 7:21the quarterback?
- 7:22>> Man, I think the the biggest thing for
- 7:23me I'm looking for in the quarterback
- 7:24when I'm recruiting. I'm looking for
- 7:26guys, man, that play both sides of the
- 7:27field. I mean, multiple sides of the the
- 7:29ball, offense and defense, uh, guys
- 7:31that's competitors, you know, um, when
- 7:32the game's alignment, they are
- 7:34embracing, hey, man, coach, put me in
- 7:35the game. I want to cover that guy. Um
- 7:37also man is good human beings you know
- 7:39that's that's thing that's a trait that
- 7:41I always look for including man because
- 7:42I don't want to deal with high
- 7:43maintenance guys I want to deal with low
- 7:44maintenance guys because I want to coach
- 7:46ball I don't want to chase you around
- 7:47class things like that I want to make
- 7:48sure you be you a football player you
- 7:50want to be great
- 7:51>> how would you kind of describe yourself
- 7:53as a recruiter out there
- 7:55>> um I try to put myself in these kids
- 7:57shoes sometimes man you know um always
- 7:59just just the running the run the
- 8:01running joke I tell kids man like I know
- 8:04you guys want to talk to a 37 year old
- 8:06every you know say you got you got your
- 8:07girlfriend you got your friends you got
- 8:09everything you know so I try to find my
- 8:10spots to you know hit them and make sure
- 8:12I'm I'm talking about real stuff not
- 8:14just pretty much just checking the box
- 8:15hey good morning like I want to make
- 8:16sure when I talk to you man it's it's
- 8:18something valid you know go tech man how
- 8:20your family doing cuz I always say man
- 8:21like these kids are 17 years old 18
- 8:23years old they got their own thing going
- 8:24on you know but once I find a day or two
- 8:26to talk to them man we going to hit we
- 8:27going to talk 15 10 15 20 minutes and we
- 8:30about some real stuff and pretty much I
- 8:31can pretty much build relationship
- 8:33outside the ball
- 8:34>> do you feel like being a younger coach,
- 8:37you can relate to them a little bit
- 8:38more.
- 8:40>> Yeah, I think so. And I think just for
- 8:42my background kind of helped me out
- 8:43sometimes. Like I say, man, like I was I
- 8:45was once recruited at high school, you
- 8:46know, um wasn't highly recruited, but
- 8:48you know, I had some some schools offer
- 8:50me scholarships. So, I know how it feel
- 8:51to talk to a coach and sometimes you
- 8:53want to be feel be bothered. So, I kind
- 8:55of like, you know, look look man, like
- 8:57I've been in your shoes, man. I was once
- 8:59a freshman ACC. I played the freshman.
- 9:01So, I know everybody you trying to
- 9:03reach, I've done it. So just following
- 9:05my boot plan, I help you out.
- 9:10>> Gotcha.
