- 0:47This is Gracelyn Keller with the Becker's Healthcare
- 0:49Podcast, and we are recording live at the
- 0:512024
- 0:52payer issues roundtable.
- 0:54I'm currently joined by Brad Riley, who is
- 0:56the VP of clinical delivery at Longevity Health
- 0:58Plans. So, Brad, thank you for joining me
- 1:00today. We'd love to start our conversation by
- 1:02having you introduce yourself and tell us a
- 1:04little bit more about your role. Sure. Absolutely.
- 1:07Well, first off, appreciate you having me. Thank
- 1:09you. So like, Grace said, I'm the vice
- 1:12president of clinical delivery at Longevity Health Plan.
- 1:15We're the fastest growing iSNP in the nation
- 1:18right now,
- 1:19and we are both a, clinical services organization
- 1:23and an institutionalized special needs plan. And what
- 1:26that means is we place advanced practice
- 1:29providers within skilled nursing facilities. We have 13
- 1:32different markets,
- 1:33and, ultimately,
- 1:34they are there to help patient centered care
- 1:37and drive, better health outcomes and goals of
- 1:40care for our iSNP,
- 1:42members.
- 1:44Wonderful. Well, thank you for being here. And
- 1:46let's start our conversation with growth goals. So
- 1:48from improving member experience to expanding value based
- 1:51care to controlling costs,
- 1:53payer executives
- 1:55have ambitious growth goals for the rest of
- 1:57this year and looking into 2025.
- 2:00So in your role, what is your top
- 2:01priority, and how are you planning to get
- 2:03there?
- 2:04Absolutely. I I think
- 2:06for me, specifically, in my role, one of
- 2:08the big things that I do is
- 2:10the, VP of clinical deliveries. I help liaison
- 2:13between
- 2:14our IT
- 2:15department and our integrations with predictive modeling and
- 2:18different things and our clinical teams.
- 2:20And so for me, specifically, I think one
- 2:22of the big things,
- 2:24obviously, AI, Gen AI, predictive analytics is big
- 2:27right now.
- 2:28Figuring out how we can,
- 2:30position ourselves to better leverage that as an
- 2:32organization,
- 2:33I think, is something a lot of organizations
- 2:35are trying to find figure out right now.
- 2:37One of the biggest obstacles
- 2:39organizations are running into is you have these
- 2:42legacy systems, but these legacy systems weren't built
- 2:45with this kind of technology in mind all
- 2:47the time. And so there's plenty of data,
- 2:49but the data is not particularly available or
- 2:52it's not organized in the right way or
- 2:54it's not refreshed at the right cadence. And
- 2:56so aggregating and setting up infrastructure
- 2:59to support the ability of having a good
- 3:02foundational
- 3:03dataset that you could help drive some your
- 3:04operations off of is something I'm definitely gonna
- 3:06be pushing through 20 the end of 2024
- 3:09and and 2025.
- 3:11And shifting our conversation towards the digital realm,
- 3:14how is technology supporting value based care for
- 3:17member focused initiatives at your organization?
- 3:20And what is exciting you most in this
- 3:22space?
- 3:23So,
- 3:24you know, I think, first off,
- 3:27longevity
- 3:28our our entire business model is built off
- 3:30of a value based care. Right?
- 3:33We firmly believe that
- 3:35driving
- 3:37health outcomes and ensuring that our members meet
- 3:39their care,
- 3:40their goals of care and their better care
- 3:43outcomes can to be driven both by clinical
- 3:45intervention,
- 3:46but also,
- 3:47informed
- 3:48through proper data driven decisions.
- 3:51And I think right now,
- 3:53you know, there's a really good opportunity, and
- 3:55I'm I've referenced it a little bit in
- 3:57our last, question. But there's a really good
- 3:59opportunity right now to leverage available data
- 4:04in helping
- 4:05inform decision making without using the data to
- 4:08make decisions. And what I mean by that
- 4:10is,
- 4:11you know, I think the big buzz right
- 4:13now is generative AI, chat g p t,
- 4:15you know, Copilot, whatever whatever people have access
- 4:17to. And I think, you know, that that's
- 4:20fun, but it's also
- 4:22it's not controlled. It's not standardized.
- 4:24There's a lot of exciting work that is
- 4:26going to, be available to us in the
- 4:28next few years. And I think, 1, building
- 4:30a foundational data structure to help support that's
- 4:33key. But in the interim, we can use
- 4:35other types of analytics. Advanced analytics is what
- 4:37I'd call it. Right? It's not technically AI,
- 4:39but you could use advanced analytics like predictive
- 4:41modeling and other things to really drive
- 4:44clinical outcomes and to understand your patient population
- 4:48a lot more. And I think the biggest
- 4:50key here, right, is is building opportunities
- 4:53for payers
- 4:56to assess all the data that they have
- 4:57available to them and then equip it,
- 5:00put it in the hands of the clinicians
- 5:03to operate at the top of their license.
- 5:05And so if we're able to,
- 5:07take data and take analytics
- 5:09and use it to allow our clinicians to
- 5:12do less administrative work or more informed
- 5:15administrative work, every single day, I would opt
- 5:17for a clinician to be able to spend
- 5:19more time with the patient talking to them
- 5:21rather than
- 5:22spending time
- 5:24going through files and trying to figure out
- 5:26what information is where
- 5:28through many different platforms. So that's, I think,
- 5:30the big thing we're driving is is leveraging
- 5:33data, making sure it's it's accurate, making sure
- 5:36it's consistent, and giving it to clinicians to
- 5:38allow them to operate at the top of
- 5:40their license.
- 5:41Absolutely.
- 5:42And
- 5:44when we look at leadership
- 5:46growth,
- 5:47keeping pace in today's dynamic health care landscape
- 5:50is challenging. So what is a piece of
- 5:52advice you'd like to share to peer leaders
- 5:54to help grow their business and keep members
- 5:56top of mind?
- 5:57Sure. So sticking with the theme, I think
- 6:00establishing
- 6:01a
- 6:02foundational
- 6:03dataset, reassessing your legacy systems that you're using,
- 6:06understanding
- 6:07how potential current integrations or future integrations
- 6:11could impact or drive
- 6:13factors for technologies that may not be,
- 6:16widely available right now, but might be in
- 6:18the next few years, I think, is gonna
- 6:19be key. We should be a couple years
- 6:21ahead. Traditionally,
- 6:23the the payer industry is is 3 years
- 6:25behind the technology industry, right, at least.
- 6:28I think some instances, maybe a little more.
- 6:30But I think the big thing is
- 6:33every I I think every leader needs to
- 6:36be thinking about,
- 6:37specifically,
- 6:38all the work that they're doing now and
- 6:40they're doing next year. They need to be
- 6:42thinking about how that's gonna impact their foundational
- 6:44data that they use at an enterprise level
- 6:47in 3, 4 years to make sure that
- 6:49there aren't any unintended consequences that could hinder
- 6:52their ability to leverage technologies
- 6:54that are, you know, not quite available yet,
- 6:56but on their way.
- 6:57And as we wrap our conversation today, are
- 7:00there any parting words you'd like to share
- 7:01for the podcast?
- 7:03I think if you're not aware of longevity
- 7:05health, I recommend you you take a minute
- 7:07and check us out. Really great organization.
- 7:10Like I said, it's the fastest growing I
- 7:12SNP in the in the nation right now.
- 7:14And as a clinical services organization,
- 7:17institutionalized special needs plan.
- 7:19We partner with both national insurers,
- 7:22long term care facilities,
- 7:23skilled nursing facilities,
- 7:25and our goal is to meet the unique
- 7:27medical, social, and emotional needs
- 7:30of our nursing home residents. And there's no
- 7:33other space or place I'd like to to
- 7:35be in to be able to make that
- 7:37impact. I think sometimes it's it's really hard
- 7:39to when when you work in data and
- 7:41when you work in, analytics to to understand
- 7:44your impact to
- 7:46members is a little hard. But I think
- 7:49absolutely recommend, check out longevity health. There's a
- 7:52lot of good things going on.
- 7:54Wonderful. Well, Brad, thanks for being on the
- 7:56Becker's Healthcare podcast today. Again, we are live
- 7:58at the 2024 payer issues roundtable.
- 8:01Appreciate it. Thanks.
