- 0:08Speaker 1: Hi, everyone, Welcome to Mind our Mountain with Cheryl Strade.
- 0:12Speaker 1: I'm so excited about my guest today, Adrian Mischler, famous
- 0:16Speaker 1: for her YouTube channel Yoga with Adrian that's followed by
- 0:20Speaker 1: thirteen million people around the world. Adrian feels kind of
- 0:24Speaker 1: like a friend to me, even though I've never met her.
- 0:26Speaker 1: I heard about her, I want to say about five
- 0:29Speaker 1: or six years ago. When I heard about her thirty
- 0:31Speaker 1: day yoga journey, I convinced my husband to do it.
- 0:34Speaker 1: It was something that we did at the New Year,
- 0:36Speaker 1: during the month of January, and every day we opened
- 0:40Speaker 1: up my laptop and pulled out our mats in our
- 0:42Speaker 1: bedroom and we did yoga together with Adrian and with
- 0:46Speaker 1: the millions of people around the globe who were doing
- 0:48Speaker 1: it alongside of us. It was transformative. It was also hard.
- 0:52Speaker 1: It felt kind of epic, because to make yourself do
- 0:56Speaker 1: something every day for a month is a hard thing.
- 1:00Speaker 1: And what I loved about Adrian's energy and this process.
- 1:05Speaker 1: Not only, of course, did she show us, you know,
- 1:07Speaker 1: how to do the downward dog the right way or
- 1:10Speaker 1: corrected our form very gently. She told us that we could.
- 1:14Speaker 1: She told us that, however, we showed up to the
- 1:16Speaker 1: mat was okay. She preached the gospel of loving kindness
- 1:22Speaker 1: and forgiveness and generosity and acceptance, and I feel like
- 1:27Speaker 1: she really was nurturing my spirit and my soul and
- 1:31Speaker 1: my mind in addition to helping me do some new, cool,
- 1:35Speaker 1: hard things with my body. In my conversation with Adrian,
- 1:38Speaker 1: we talk all about that. Let's listen to my conversation
- 1:41Speaker 1: with Adrian. Adrian Michler, Welcome to Mind over Mountain.
- 1:46Speaker 2: Hi Bear, Cheryl, thank you so much for having me.
- 1:49Speaker 1: I cannot tell you how thrilled I am to talk
- 1:52Speaker 1: to you, because I feel like I know you, and
- 1:54Speaker 1: I'm going to guess I am not alone in that.
- 1:57Speaker 1: Your YouTube yogame with Adrian channel has something like thirteen
- 2:01Speaker 1: million followers at this point, maybe more, and I welcome
- 2:06Speaker 1: you into my home on a regular basis. I found
- 2:10Speaker 1: you many years ago when I did the thirty Day
- 2:13Speaker 1: Yoga Journey one January, and it felt transformative to me.
- 2:18Speaker 1: So thank you so much for being one of my
- 2:21Speaker 1: teachers and guides. And it's truly a great honor to
- 2:24Speaker 1: get to have this conversation with you today.
- 2:26Speaker 2: Well, thank you so much. The feeling is mutual. I
- 2:29Speaker 2: feel like logging on here and yeah, just that I'm
- 2:34Speaker 2: meeting up with a friend, and yet this is our
- 2:38Speaker 2: first time to have a conversation and look at each
- 2:41Speaker 2: other in the eye. So I am grateful for that.
- 2:44Speaker 2: I'm grateful to be considered and invited. And I never
- 2:48Speaker 2: take it for granted that anyone would welcome me into
- 2:51Speaker 2: their home, into their sanctuary, into their personal time and space.
- 2:57Speaker 2: So that has been true since day one, really and
- 3:03Speaker 2: just could not feel more true. I feel like I
- 3:05Speaker 2: might even appreciate it more now than I did in
- 3:07Speaker 2: the beginning. Wow, So thank you, thank you.
- 3:11Speaker 1: When I first was thinking of people I want to
- 3:15Speaker 1: talk to for this podcast, you were one of the
- 3:17Speaker 1: very first people on my list, you know, and the
- 3:20Speaker 1: very at the very top of my list. And I
- 3:23Speaker 1: reflected on that a bit because when I think of you,
- 3:28Speaker 1: and I've now practiced with you, you'll go with you
- 3:30Speaker 1: often enough to know that everything you say about what
- 3:34Speaker 1: we do with our bodies together, I mean through through
- 3:37Speaker 1: my computer screen is about permission and gentleness and and
- 3:45Speaker 1: and curiosity and a kind of you know, there's no
- 3:50Speaker 1: there's no idea of competitiveness. I guess what I'm trying
- 3:53Speaker 1: to get at is so much of the language you use,
- 3:56Speaker 1: and I think the principles that you use as a
- 3:59Speaker 1: teacher and a human it seems seem to be the
- 4:02Speaker 1: opposite of what we think of when we think of
- 4:04Speaker 1: sport or when we think of athletes. And I'm wondering
- 4:07Speaker 1: what you think about that is, are you an athlete?
- 4:10Speaker 1: Is yoga a sport? And where does it fall into
- 4:13Speaker 1: line when it comes to questions like competition or driving
- 4:17Speaker 1: hard as we think of with so many other sports
- 4:20Speaker 1: right off the bat, For me, yoga is not a sport.
- 4:24Speaker 1: It is a practice for living and growing and understanding
- 4:31Speaker 1: and knowing ourselves so that we can so that that
- 4:35Speaker 1: can influence the way we show up and get to
- 4:37Speaker 1: know and understand others in the world. It is an
- 4:42Speaker 1: ancient practice, as you know that I'm no expert of
- 4:46Speaker 1: and never will be. But I am a humble student
- 4:50Speaker 1: and very passionate person about having a practice that to
- 4:55Speaker 1: me is not sport, but that is truly encompassing the
- 5:01Speaker 1: whole person. So that is one spirit, one's physical body,
- 5:08Speaker 1: and then our mind.
- 5:10Speaker 2: And I think again yoga was all about, which is
- 5:14Speaker 2: like this trustful surrender, and I think it takes a
- 5:18Speaker 2: lot of courage. I would if I were to name
- 5:21Speaker 2: a sport like an athleticism that has to do it
- 5:25Speaker 2: with yoga, it would be that it would be all
- 5:27Speaker 2: about courage, that you have to actually be brave enough
- 5:31Speaker 2: to see yourself because it is not about that performance.
- 5:37Speaker 2: And for me actually, and I think for many people
- 5:41Speaker 2: who show up for any type of yoga, you may
- 5:44Speaker 2: not notice it at first, but pretty quickly your inner
- 5:47Speaker 2: wisdom's like what am I doing this for the mirror
- 5:51Speaker 2: or the person next to me? Or like why am
- 5:54Speaker 2: I giving two hundred percent when I have two percent today?
- 5:58Speaker 2: Like where is that coming from?
- 6:00Speaker 1: It?
- 6:01Speaker 2: And as you said, and to me, that like sparks
- 6:03Speaker 2: of curiosity that then feels really motivating to keep coming
- 6:08Speaker 2: back to the mat for versus I think when I
- 6:11Speaker 2: was younger, there was a lot of external There was
- 6:14Speaker 2: a lot of motivating factors that were outside of myself, right, Yeah.
- 6:19Speaker 1: It's it's so interesting though, because you know that word
- 6:22Speaker 1: embodiment is I think one I think of a lot
- 6:27Speaker 1: when I think about what yoga is, and it is
- 6:32Speaker 1: I mean right there that that body is at the
- 6:35Speaker 1: center of that word. You know, you said yoga's not
- 6:38Speaker 1: a sport and I know what you mean by that,
- 6:40Speaker 1: And I also think that when I'm doing yoga, I'm
- 6:45Speaker 1: actually more more engaged with my physical being in a
- 6:51Speaker 1: kind of total or whole or embodied way, if you will.
- 6:54Speaker 1: Then maybe I am sometimes when I'm doing the other
- 6:57Speaker 1: sports that I practiced that you would have no calling
- 7:00Speaker 1: the sport, you know, whether it be hiking or running
- 7:02Speaker 1: or weightlifting. And so in some ways, it's like yoga
- 7:06Speaker 1: to me is more athletic because it's more about the body,
- 7:10Speaker 1: or I guess what I mean, is athletic at its
- 7:13Speaker 1: essential core. I wonder what you think about that, what
- 7:15Speaker 1: you think about embodiment.
- 7:17Speaker 2: Yes, I would agree that that there is an athleticism too,
- 7:26Speaker 2: in that it is a discipline. It is all about
- 7:29Speaker 2: focus and discipline and listening and responding. It's funny because
- 7:37Speaker 2: oftentimes I will joke with my family or my work
- 7:42Speaker 2: family that, you know, okay, looking ahead, looking at this month,
- 7:46Speaker 2: like I'm an athlete, Like we're gonna, I'm gonna, We're
- 7:48Speaker 2: gonna have to. I really need to be on my game,
- 7:52Speaker 2: you know, just because of the sheer amount of things
- 7:53Speaker 2: on the calendar or whatever. So that's kind of like my
- 7:55Speaker 2: go to thing of like we're I'm going to be
- 7:57Speaker 2: an athlete, I'm going name everything I consume, you know,
- 8:01Speaker 2: everything matters. Yeah, But I think I'm probably using that
- 8:08Speaker 2: because there's truth in that. There is a certain type
- 8:12Speaker 2: of attention that is given when you're when you're in
- 8:15Speaker 2: yoga that cannot come from any other place but yourself.
- 8:21Speaker 1: But I think, Adrian, one of the things that that
- 8:24Speaker 1: I find so compelling and beautiful and powerful about what
- 8:28Speaker 1: you do on you know, on your YouTube channel and
- 8:32Speaker 1: other places too, on your platform, Uh find what feels good.
- 8:37Speaker 1: And I think that what I'm really curious about with
- 8:41Speaker 1: you is you know you are you know, yoga is
- 8:44Speaker 1: that friend, but you are that friend two millions of people,
- 8:47Speaker 1: and you are the voice that counters that inner terrible
- 8:51Speaker 1: someone that lives in a lot of our heads, all
- 8:52Speaker 1: of our heads, let's face it. And you're saying it's okay,
- 8:56Speaker 1: you are okay, And you do not condemn me when
- 9:00Speaker 1: I can't touch my toes while keeping my legs perfectly straight,
- 9:03Speaker 1: or I can't you know, reach in the same way
- 9:07Speaker 1: that I see you reaching. And what about you? How
- 9:14Speaker 1: do you? How have you been a friend to yourself?
- 9:16Speaker 1: When have you found it hard to show up for yourself,
- 9:21Speaker 1: to show up on the mat, to be that voice
- 9:24Speaker 1: of invitation and kindness and generosity.
- 9:29Speaker 2: So the first thing is, like, I I don't think
- 9:32Speaker 2: I'd be able to share what I share online or
- 9:35Speaker 2: in person in my community if I hadn't. You know,
- 9:40Speaker 2: I'm a big fan of putting myself in other people's shoes.
- 9:43Speaker 2: I'm not perfect, but I try to do that. But
- 9:46Speaker 2: I also try to bring my experience to whatever it
- 9:50Speaker 2: is I'm leading. So it's why I actually don't have
- 9:55Speaker 2: like I have a little bit ill just this is
- 9:57Speaker 2: a random example, but a good one. I have a
- 10:00Speaker 2: little bit of prenatal yoga and yoga for mothers are
- 10:05Speaker 2: expecting online, but not a lot because I've never had
- 10:09Speaker 2: that experience. And so most of the things I could say,
- 10:14Speaker 2: especially for yoga theater and the YouTube channel and that
- 10:16Speaker 2: kind of passion project that mushroomed that blossom. I'm taking requests,
- 10:24Speaker 2: but I'm usually sharing from a personal experience, something that
- 10:29Speaker 2: I had gone through and then either overcome or move
- 10:33Speaker 2: through or learned to celebrate. And I think that has
- 10:36Speaker 2: been a big shift for me, is not worrying about
- 10:42Speaker 2: how I sound or what other people think, but really
- 10:44Speaker 2: giving myself more permission to not even openly. I'm barely
- 10:49Speaker 2: getting it out there, but this practice definitely happening in
- 10:52Speaker 2: my own kind of inner circle of celebrating my downtime's
- 10:59Speaker 2: celebrating my failures, leaning into the tenderness, not needing to
- 11:06Speaker 2: be this strong person. Leaning you know now that I'm
- 11:12Speaker 2: you know, always wanting to be a good role model
- 11:14Speaker 2: for young people, but especially for yoga teachers. You know,
- 11:19Speaker 2: you don't have to know everything, like leaning into the
- 11:22Speaker 2: things you don't know. Let me check on that I
- 11:23Speaker 2: don't know. Let me ask you a question, right, you know,
- 11:27Speaker 2: trying to find the answer together versus having all the answers.
- 11:30Speaker 2: We know all these things, but it's just so funny
- 11:32Speaker 2: how we're so We've got such a grip on some
- 11:36Speaker 2: of these patterns that I think the best way I've
- 11:41Speaker 2: been befriending myself is by allowing myself to be seen.
- 11:46Speaker 1: I think by some people have been perceived as like, Okay,
- 11:51Speaker 1: you know, you're the Yogi. You're the great Adrian Mitcheler
- 11:54Speaker 1: who knows you know, who has such groundedness and calm
- 11:57Speaker 1: and ease and knows the knows the right path you know,
- 12:02Speaker 1: and my work is dearsugar. Sometimes people be like, well,
- 12:05Speaker 1: tell me what to do, give me this advice, as
- 12:08Speaker 1: if as if there's as if I'm not just down
- 12:10Speaker 1: there flailing around or struggling just like everyone else. Right,
- 12:14Speaker 1: And and we have both I think we shared this.
- 12:16Speaker 1: We've both always said no, no, no, no, no, I'm
- 12:19Speaker 1: right here with you struggling. I'm right here with you trying.
- 12:22Speaker 1: I'm right here with you having to find the courage
- 12:25Speaker 1: to show up, but the mat or the courage to
- 12:27Speaker 1: you know, navigate these difficult things in my life. And
- 12:31Speaker 1: I think that you. I was so moved. You've done
- 12:35Speaker 1: that beautifully when you had the experience that I read
- 12:39Speaker 1: about a few years ago, when you had a panic attack,
- 12:42Speaker 1: and you shared with with your vast audience your struggles
- 12:48Speaker 1: with that, and which you know, I think at first,
- 12:50Speaker 1: blessed blush seemed contrary, right to to somebody who has
- 12:55Speaker 1: spent a lifetime with stillness and calm, Right, can you
- 13:00Speaker 1: tell us about that?
- 13:01Speaker 2: Absolutely? The funny thing about that is that when I
- 13:09Speaker 2: experienced like full fledged bodily panic and went through that
- 13:17Speaker 2: experience of like pretty severe nervous system, it's like I
- 13:24Speaker 2: always think of the image of bugs Bunny doing his
- 13:27Speaker 2: like like it was. It was. It was very lonely tunes.
- 13:32Speaker 1: Did you know you were having a panic attack or
- 13:34Speaker 1: what happened?
- 13:35Speaker 2: Yeah, well what happened was so what happened was I
- 13:42Speaker 2: I guess I can't remember how old I was, but
- 13:47Speaker 2: in my late thirties I wanted to freeze my eggs
- 13:48Speaker 2: and I kind of knew that and I wanted to. Yeah,
- 13:54Speaker 2: I was like my hard earned cash and I want
- 13:56Speaker 2: to do this, let's do it. And then the pandemic
- 13:58Speaker 2: hit and I didn't do it. Oh well, so I
- 14:02Speaker 2: threw myself into work. I'm sure it's no surprise, but yeah,
- 14:07Speaker 2: during the pandemic, I was very blessed to have a
- 14:10Speaker 2: lot to do, to share, to show up for and
- 14:13Speaker 2: I did. I showed up for everything. And I don't
- 14:16Speaker 2: name that as like I'm so amazing, but to bring
- 14:21Speaker 2: just to kind of help contextualize the lead d to
- 14:26Speaker 2: something major that changed me, changed my whole life. And
- 14:29Speaker 2: I think, of course the pandemic was that for all
- 14:34Speaker 2: of us in some way, shape or form. But I
- 14:36Speaker 2: really I did not say no. If someone's out there
- 14:40Speaker 2: that's like, no, you said no, send me, because I
- 14:42Speaker 2: really I lost the ability. I just was like from
- 14:46Speaker 2: every person I went to high school with, middle school
- 14:50Speaker 2: with diaper drive, every major news outlet, and I'm not
- 14:55Speaker 2: I'm thankful. Like I said, I had the great privilege
- 14:59Speaker 2: of blessing. I'm having some having work and write something
- 15:02Speaker 2: meaningful to share, and I would do it all over again.
- 15:07Speaker 2: That's the funny thing. It was such a it was.
- 15:13Speaker 2: It was beautiful. And as soon as things opened up
- 15:18Speaker 2: enough that I could go do essentially go freeze my eggs,
- 15:24Speaker 2: I did with and my now husband was very supportive.
- 15:29Speaker 2: But here's the thing. I was not properly educated on
- 15:36Speaker 2: how to care for myself post that post that procedure,
- 15:44Speaker 2: but also just with the the hormones that I took.
- 15:48Speaker 2: You know, I was told you could go back to
- 15:50Speaker 2: work after a day, maybe two days, all good, o'
- 15:54Speaker 2: labien awesome. So I was like, okay, great, and two
- 15:58Speaker 2: days I'm going to travel to Mexico City because I
- 16:02Speaker 2: had an opportunity masked up. You know, was still we
- 16:06Speaker 2: were coming out of this pandemic time. But I went.
- 16:10Speaker 2: And here's a fun thing that everyone will love to
- 16:13Speaker 2: hear that their yoga teacher did like I was like,
- 16:16Speaker 2: this is the first time, you know, we were out
- 16:19Speaker 2: in a long time. So I'm like, you know, Mexico
- 16:22Speaker 2: City is not far from Austin, Texas, but I'm traveling.
- 16:24Speaker 2: We are making the most of it. We are saying
- 16:28Speaker 2: yes to hanging out. We're having that extra wine, We're
- 16:33Speaker 2: having that extra espressol in the afternoon, we and all
- 16:37Speaker 2: of those things. It was just too much. I was
- 16:39Speaker 2: walking through the big park in Mexico City to put
- 16:42Speaker 2: the pech Park, and it just makes me feel ill
- 16:46Speaker 2: to think about it, even to this moment. But there
- 16:51Speaker 2: was something going on I did not know what, and
- 16:54Speaker 2: my beautiful partner was there and Isa so dramatic. I
- 16:57Speaker 2: actually have never told this piece. This part of the
- 16:59Speaker 2: story so dramatic. But I'm like walking through Chipoltepeg Park
- 17:03Speaker 2: and if this were a movie, it would like the
- 17:06Speaker 2: camera would go from a wide all the way into
- 17:09Speaker 2: a close and I basically end up kind of like
- 17:12Speaker 2: behind this tree having a bit of a panic attack
- 17:16Speaker 2: on my house. Dow has been holding me, but I
- 17:20Speaker 2: didn't even know. Neither one of us knew that that
- 17:23Speaker 2: was happening then, so we kind of carried on. I
- 17:25Speaker 2: just thought, Wow, it's the hormones, right, it's the hormones.
- 17:29Speaker 2: I don't know. So we continued on, met some friends.
- 17:33Speaker 2: I have some great colleagues in Mexico City. Conversations, work dinners,
- 17:37Speaker 2: hanging out, and then all of a sudden, finally work
- 17:40Speaker 2: is done. We get to have one of our favorite
- 17:42Speaker 2: types of days, which is walking in Mexico City, getting
- 17:46Speaker 2: our step count high, with no care in the world.
- 17:48Speaker 2: And we walked to our one of our favorite little
- 17:50Speaker 2: spots and it you know, it was unspoken, but the
- 17:56Speaker 2: plan was that, you know, my husband I would just
- 17:57Speaker 2: have a day just us and I started to lose
- 18:00Speaker 2: vision in my right eye, couldn't see, have my peripherrole
- 18:04Speaker 2: and when my beautiful dad, who's now healthy, strong, but
- 18:12Speaker 2: when he was diagnosed with MS, that was the first
- 18:14Speaker 2: thing that happened was he was driving to work one
- 18:16Speaker 2: day and he lost So then I'm thinking, oh, my goodness,
- 18:20Speaker 2: is it the harmons or do is there something else
- 18:22Speaker 2: going on? And well, I'll wrap up the tail. But
- 18:28Speaker 2: that led to me us not walking back to the apartment,
- 18:32Speaker 2: getting in an uber and the whole journey back to
- 18:35Speaker 2: the apartment and up to the apartment from then on
- 18:39Speaker 2: was was pretty severe and I I'm just I can't
- 18:43Speaker 2: believe that my husband or I did not know that
- 18:47Speaker 2: I was having a panic attack. So it was kind
- 18:51Speaker 2: of the secrets of events that led us maybe up
- 18:54Speaker 2: to that that made it confusing. But I also think
- 18:57Speaker 2: that's why I share my story is we we need
- 19:01Speaker 2: to be more educated on these things and more in
- 19:04Speaker 2: tune with our nervous system and how it works, like
- 19:07Speaker 2: the ideology, because that could really go a long way.
- 19:10Speaker 2: I wrote in an ambulance to the local hospital, and
- 19:14Speaker 2: after many, many, many tests, it was the hospital staff
- 19:18Speaker 2: that was like, Okay, the next thing on the list
- 19:21Speaker 2: to do is have the hospital you know therapists come in.
- 19:25Speaker 2: And we were like what so? And then, as you
- 19:29Speaker 2: can imagine, the whole process from there was so personal
- 19:36Speaker 2: and almost dumbfounding. How could I have not known that
- 19:40Speaker 2: I was having that experience? So I've been pretty devoted
- 19:46Speaker 2: to ever since kind of leveling up on my understanding,
- 19:50Speaker 2: right and what is your what is your understanding of
- 19:53Speaker 2: that now?
- 19:54Speaker 1: I mean, as somebody who who I think yoga is
- 19:59Speaker 1: so much about, right, like calming that nervous system, being
- 20:04Speaker 1: attuned to that nervous system. What have you learned in
- 20:07Speaker 1: the wake of this experience with having a panic attack,
- 20:10Speaker 1: and did you have others or was that the only one?
- 20:15Speaker 2: Well, the main thing I learned that and especially for
- 20:17Speaker 2: anyone who's listening in any season of their life, is
- 20:22Speaker 2: you can feel happy and grateful and optimistic and a
- 20:28Speaker 2: little bit sad but still helpful and have a full
- 20:30Speaker 2: blown panic attack. You know, like, it is not always
- 20:34Speaker 2: how you see it in television or the movies. Everyone
- 20:38Speaker 2: is different, and all of our physical makeup is always
- 20:40Speaker 2: going to be different. It's always changing based on whatever's
- 20:43Speaker 2: going on in our lives. I know we hear it
- 20:47Speaker 2: all the time, but we can and we should, and
- 20:51Speaker 2: we can tru lead each other into fine tuning those
- 20:55Speaker 2: listening skills. You don't have to actually know the whole
- 20:57Speaker 2: physiology or go to any fancy workshop to learn this stuff.
- 21:04Speaker 2: Just start paying attention to your body. I sometimes can
- 21:07Speaker 2: feel it if a car breaks quickly in front of me.
- 21:10Speaker 2: Sometimes I'm like, no problem traffic. Other Days I can
- 21:15Speaker 2: feel this zing in my whole body, or this tingling
- 21:18Speaker 2: that I probably ignored for years. But now after this experience,
- 21:21Speaker 2: I'm I'm, I'm the.
- 21:24Speaker 1: Veil has been and now you're like, that's panic. That's
- 21:28Speaker 1: that's the expression of something deeper than maybe the conscious
- 21:32Speaker 1: mind knows.
- 21:33Speaker 2: Yeah. To me, it's like it's a signal. So thankfully
- 21:39Speaker 2: I'm not close to the panic as much anymore. But
- 21:41Speaker 2: it's a it's a signal, it's a it's a it's
- 21:44Speaker 2: a bread crumb, it's a love note. You know, we
- 21:46Speaker 2: can turn this into poetry too. It doesn't need to
- 21:48Speaker 2: be so fear based, you know, as what I learned
- 21:51Speaker 2: as well, it's a whisper of like, hey, if this
- 21:56Speaker 2: is your baseline, we're kind of here today because yeah,
- 22:01Speaker 2: we felt that tingly. I don't need to dwell on it.
- 22:03Speaker 2: I don't actually need to sit in it unless I
- 22:06Speaker 2: do feel like I need to. But for the next
- 22:09Speaker 2: seven to ten days, I'm going to say no to things.
- 22:13Speaker 2: I'm going to go on longer walks. I'm going to
- 22:16Speaker 2: get it back to what we call on yoga this
- 22:19Speaker 2: you know spot dicks, like this sweet spot dick space,
- 22:25Speaker 2: which is a place where we don't disregard the hard
- 22:33Speaker 2: stuff or the stress inducing stuff. As we know there's
- 22:36Speaker 2: good stress. We know this, but it's more about getting
- 22:40Speaker 2: the right like toggling the right balance of you know,
- 22:43Speaker 2: the high octane and the and the steadiness to kind
- 22:48Speaker 2: of find your your your mid range. And the thing
- 22:52Speaker 2: is it changes all the time. That's why showing up
- 22:54Speaker 2: for regular practices, whatever they are, are beautiful.
- 23:08Speaker 1: Everything you're saying about what you had to do after
- 23:13Speaker 1: experiencing this panic attack and realizing that's what it was
- 23:17Speaker 1: to me. The phrase that's coming to mind is self care.
- 23:21Speaker 1: And it just happens that I have a deer Sugar
- 23:23Speaker 1: letter that I would love for you to help me
- 23:25Speaker 1: answer that's on this subject. Can I read it to you?
- 23:30Speaker 2: Yes, please, Deer Sugar.
- 23:32Speaker 1: My life over the past couple of years has been
- 23:34Speaker 1: difficult by any measure. My younger brother was diagnosed with cancer.
- 23:39Speaker 1: He's getting treatment, but it's been hard to see him sick,
- 23:42Speaker 1: and it's scary to be so uncertain about what's ahead.
- 23:46Speaker 1: My wife and I separated and recently decided to divorce amicably,
- 23:50Speaker 1: but it's still sad. I lost my job about a
- 23:53Speaker 1: year ago when the company I worked for had to downsize,
- 23:56Speaker 1: and even though I found another job fairly quickly, I
- 23:58Speaker 1: don't like it as much as I'd liked my old job,
- 24:00Speaker 1: and I miss working with coworkers who felt like family.
- 24:04Speaker 1: My beloved fourteen year old dog is ailing, and his
- 24:07Speaker 1: veterinarian has started to talk to me about it being
- 24:10Speaker 1: time to think about putting him down. On top of
- 24:13Speaker 1: all that, there's a relentless stream of news that brings
- 24:15Speaker 1: me to tears of rage and heartbreak on an almost
- 24:17Speaker 1: daily basis. The end result of all of the above
- 24:22Speaker 1: is that I'm often finding myself talking to friends about
- 24:24Speaker 1: my various sorrows, and a good number of them say
- 24:27Speaker 1: I need to practice self care. I nod and agree
- 24:31Speaker 1: when this phrase self care comes up, but upon reflection,
- 24:35Speaker 1: I've come to realize that I, a capable, high functioning
- 24:38Speaker 1: thirty seven year old woman, doesn't actually know jack about
- 24:41Speaker 1: self care. If pressed, I'd say it's getting a massage
- 24:45Speaker 1: or taking a hot bath. I like both of those things,
- 24:48Speaker 1: but neither strike me as sufficiently self caring. Neither would
- 24:52Speaker 1: shift the way I feel about my life right now
- 24:54Speaker 1: or be transformative in the way I think I need.
- 24:57Speaker 1: So how do I do it? How do you take
- 25:00Speaker 1: care of yourself when things are truly hard?
- 25:02Speaker 2: Sugar?
- 25:04Speaker 1: I know a lot of people care for me, but
- 25:06Speaker 1: how do I care for myself? Thanks? Signed self care seeker?
- 25:12Speaker 1: Oh that letter fills my heart because I think I
- 25:17Speaker 1: know I myself have also asked that question many times.
- 25:22Speaker 1: You know, we throw around these kind of wellness terms
- 25:25Speaker 1: and it's like help me, help me, help me actually
- 25:29Speaker 1: figure this out, Like how do I get through this
- 25:32Speaker 1: hard time and feel better about it or accept the
- 25:35Speaker 1: brutal and difficult things about my life? What do you think, Adrian?
- 25:43Speaker 1: This letter.
- 25:46Speaker 2: Touches me too because it reminds me as a person.
- 25:51Speaker 2: And this is what I would first lovingly share with
- 25:55Speaker 2: self care seeker, which is like, we're just not alone.
- 25:59Speaker 2: We the rates of reported loneliness are higher than ever.
- 26:07Speaker 2: But I think that's the first thing that came up
- 26:13Speaker 2: for me, was like, oh, you're not alone. That so
- 26:16Speaker 2: much of that resonates with me as well. And I
- 26:20Speaker 2: think even if you don't believe it out of the
- 26:25Speaker 2: gate today, I would just invite us all myself every
- 26:29Speaker 2: day to remember that, you know. I mean I just
- 26:31Speaker 2: shared how I might text my girlfriends and tell them
- 26:34Speaker 2: about this amazing dream I had talking with you. But
- 26:44Speaker 2: I think recognizing how powerful the few people, even if
- 26:51Speaker 2: it's that one person or one person that you pass
- 26:54Speaker 2: consistently on a walk each day, that they're part of
- 26:57Speaker 2: your they're part of your journey and part of your story,
- 27:01Speaker 2: and so you're not alone. And I think that's one
- 27:04Speaker 2: of the things that I am blown away by with Yogo,
- 27:08Speaker 2: with Adrian. And I'm not necessarily saying this person should
- 27:12Speaker 2: come on over, though they totally should and stay a while,
- 27:18Speaker 2: But I think that is one of the beautiful things
- 27:21Speaker 2: about that international community. Is is and this kind of
- 27:26Speaker 2: takes it back to where we started our conversation. Is
- 27:28Speaker 2: there's there's not that feeling of competition, and you don't
- 27:32Speaker 2: even need to have the camaraderie. But it's almost just
- 27:35Speaker 2: like this exhale as you realize I'm not the only
- 27:39Speaker 2: person having a really tough go and that we're allowed
- 27:46Speaker 2: to sit in that together like you don't have to
- 27:48Speaker 2: We're not alone in that.
- 27:51Speaker 1: Yeah, I think that, and I think when you do that.
- 27:55Speaker 1: So earlier we mentioned if you'll agree with if you'll
- 27:58Speaker 1: go with my term of your your your it's you're
- 28:00Speaker 1: inner terrible someone You know that we all have that
- 28:03Speaker 1: that is the voice of doom and negativity. And everything's
- 28:07Speaker 1: hard and I'm heartbroken and I can't and how am
- 28:10Speaker 1: I going to survive this? And I won't accept this,
- 28:12Speaker 1: you know, that voice. I could go on. You can
- 28:15Speaker 1: see I'm rather familiar with my own personal it's but
- 28:19Speaker 1: there is a voice in each of us that's truer
- 28:25Speaker 1: and stronger and more rooted and is always speaking from love.
- 28:31Speaker 1: And I call that my wise inner stage. And you know,
- 28:33Speaker 1: different people call it different things for themselves, but that's there.
- 28:36Speaker 1: And I think that the best advice I have for
- 28:39Speaker 1: self care seeker, and I think this you're speaking to
- 28:42Speaker 1: this point, Adrian, is that whatever it is that puts
- 28:45Speaker 1: yourself in company with that wise voice is going to
- 28:50Speaker 1: be powerfully self caring, you know. So sometimes that is
- 28:54Speaker 1: taking a walk. Sometimes that's showing up on the mat
- 28:57Speaker 1: and doing yoga. Sometimes it's reaching out to a front,
- 29:00Speaker 1: and it could even be just texting a friend, you know,
- 29:02Speaker 1: and you just feel a little bit better. And sometimes
- 29:05Speaker 1: it's one practice I do obviously as a writer, but
- 29:08Speaker 1: I'm constantly encouraging other people.
- 29:10Speaker 2: To do this.
- 29:11Speaker 1: When I'm in the you know, self care seeker, ask
- 29:14Speaker 1: me directly, what do you do when you're in a
- 29:16Speaker 1: hard time? And by the way, I'm actually in one
- 29:19Speaker 1: right now, and what I do and yet I still
- 29:23Speaker 1: have to function, I still have to do everything I
- 29:25Speaker 1: need to do, as we all do. And what I
- 29:29Speaker 1: do is I start each day with a letter to
- 29:32Speaker 1: myself and so self care Seker, I'm going to give
- 29:35Speaker 1: you an assignment, and everyone who's listening, who's going through
- 29:37Speaker 1: a hard time, write this down and do it. Dear
- 29:40Speaker 1: what's your you know, whatever your name is, So dear Adrian,
- 29:42Speaker 1: if you were doing this, Dear Adrian, this is your
- 29:44Speaker 1: wise inner sage. And here's what I want you to
- 29:47Speaker 1: know today, and what I promise you is what you
- 29:51Speaker 1: write next, that letter to yourself is going to be
- 29:53Speaker 1: full of clarity. It's going to be full of truth,
- 29:56Speaker 1: and it's going to be full of love and to
- 30:02Speaker 1: give yourself a doose of that. Medicine doesn't obliterate all
- 30:06Speaker 1: the hard things throughout the rest of the day, but
- 30:10Speaker 1: it starts you off with that sense of, like you said,
- 30:13Speaker 1: you aren't alone, and also that you can do these things.
- 30:17Speaker 2: That's beautiful. I'm going to do that in my morning
- 30:20Speaker 2: pages tomorrow. And I think that just magnifies what I
- 30:26Speaker 2: was thinking, which is self care is not outside of you.
- 30:30Speaker 2: It's listening. And for me, self care is also and
- 30:33Speaker 2: I totally understand where self care seekers coming from because
- 30:37Speaker 2: the amount of money that is involved in shaping what
- 30:41Speaker 2: we're supposed to think of self care as it's just
- 30:44Speaker 2: like something you need to buy or pay for a yeah. Yeah,
- 30:48Speaker 2: But one thing I wanted to add was that for me, yeah,
- 30:52Speaker 2: self care is like the process of getting to know yourself.
- 30:58Speaker 2: Like that's a great way to care for yourself, and
- 31:01Speaker 2: it does take bravery and also that for me personally,
- 31:07Speaker 2: we have this phrase in the yoga therapy program which
- 31:11Speaker 2: kind of just helps us take these practices out into
- 31:14Speaker 2: other settings like clinical settings and schools in safe and
- 31:18Speaker 2: beautiful ways. We have this phrase called little little and
- 31:23Speaker 2: so it's just even if it's just like a paragraph,
- 31:25Speaker 2: right with a letter or just a little bit of today,
- 31:29Speaker 2: I'm going to pay attention to how I talk to myself,
- 31:32Speaker 2: but that that gentle and consistent way of being is
- 31:38Speaker 2: like the ultimate self care. Like a little little or
- 31:42Speaker 2: you know on the channel always say little goes a
- 31:44Speaker 2: long way.
- 31:47Speaker 1: I think that's an interesting that's so right, you know,
- 31:50Speaker 1: Like that that letter I just proposed, it could be
- 31:53Speaker 1: three sentences long and it will be that little thing.
- 31:56Speaker 1: And I think that there's a lot of crossover into
- 31:59Speaker 1: yoga for me with that you know that little you know?
- 32:03Speaker 2: Can you?
- 32:04Speaker 1: Can you drop those shoulders? Can you?
- 32:06Speaker 2: You know?
- 32:07Speaker 1: Like you know square your lips? Can you the most
- 32:10Speaker 1: challenging thing for me and yoga? And I want to
- 32:11Speaker 1: ask you what's the most challenging thing for you and yoga?
- 32:14Speaker 1: But I have to admit, Adrian, and I don't know.
- 32:17Speaker 1: Maybe you can diagnose me what is wrong with me?
- 32:19Speaker 1: But I it's gonna sound crazy. I hate breathing. Like
- 32:24Speaker 1: when you are like, Okay, I'm gonna lead you for
- 32:26Speaker 1: two minutes of breath work, I'm like, no, I don't
- 32:30Speaker 1: want to breathe. Breathing, breathing is it feels I resist it,
- 32:36Speaker 1: like and it's so like talk about little little right,
- 32:39Speaker 1: That's exactly what the breath is, which is why you're
- 32:42Speaker 1: always on about the breath. It's the core of everything.
- 32:46Speaker 1: And I resisted. It is the hardest thing for me.
- 32:50Speaker 1: What is the hardest thing for you? And please tell
- 32:53Speaker 1: me why is breathing so fucking high for me?
- 32:56Speaker 2: And I'm smiling so big and I apologize, but it's
- 32:59Speaker 2: because because believe or not, these I think these are
- 33:04Speaker 2: the conversations we need to be having. Not Here's a
- 33:07Speaker 2: video that fits sleekly into your algorithm telling you how
- 33:12Speaker 2: to do this technique. I think for so long, even
- 33:14Speaker 2: for me, I was like, oh wait, especially through video,
- 33:18Speaker 2: but people aren't actually doing these breadth techniques with me
- 33:22Speaker 2: or in the room. What we really need to do
- 33:24Speaker 2: is take a single breath that we're actually willing to
- 33:28Speaker 2: do and to find this like slow, gentle, consistent relationship
- 33:35Speaker 2: with it versus you know, the quick fixed culture is
- 33:39Speaker 2: kind of like the opposite in my mind of trustful surrender.
- 33:42Speaker 2: So I think backing the truck way up and while
- 33:49Speaker 2: still honoring anayama, especially if you're in if you're practicing yoga,
- 33:55Speaker 2: but we can take it out of the leands of
- 33:57Speaker 2: yoga for the sake of this conversation for a moment,
- 33:59Speaker 2: to say, like one cycle of breath that begins with
- 34:05Speaker 2: an exhale, I would say, would be my homework for
- 34:09Speaker 2: you and self care seeker if they're willing. We often
- 34:13Speaker 2: think of the inhale starting or excuse me, the breath
- 34:15Speaker 2: starting with an inhale just for fun. What would it
- 34:20Speaker 2: be like to actually think of the beginning of your
- 34:23Speaker 2: breath cycle with the ex sale and to just slow
- 34:28Speaker 2: it down and literally just one cycle of breath, so
- 34:32Speaker 2: that would be an exhale and inhale, and you're doing
- 34:35Speaker 2: it now. And you're a writer, you're a storyteller. We
- 34:38Speaker 2: know that in every end is the beginning. So it's
- 34:42Speaker 2: like then it just kind of starts to unfold. Oh well,
- 34:45Speaker 2: I'm the exhale, is now the beginning of the next cycle.
- 34:50Speaker 2: I have a teacher right now that just keeps saying
- 34:53Speaker 2: these three words slow and I say them too, smooth
- 34:56Speaker 2: and steady. That's what we're looking for. The hardest part
- 34:59Speaker 2: for me, showing up. It's hilarious. I mean it's true.
- 35:03Speaker 1: It's so even the leader, this this god is leader
- 35:09Speaker 1: of the millions of people around the globe, it's like, ah,
- 35:12Speaker 1: it's gonna be hard to get there sometimes some days.
- 35:17Speaker 2: And to be created though. This morning, I too was
- 35:20Speaker 2: going through a hard time this morning, and I even
- 35:22Speaker 2: thought about our conversation. You know what I do when
- 35:24Speaker 2: you're like, what do I have to do with my day?
- 35:25Speaker 2: I'm not in my perfect, perfect perfection, And I just
- 35:31Speaker 2: found myself sitting near Benji by the fire. Was Yeah,
- 35:36Speaker 2: I was like, oh God, I gotta I gotta really
- 35:38Speaker 2: think about my day. I had a big long, long
- 35:42Speaker 2: chunk today from in terms of just hours that I needed.
- 35:46Speaker 2: I wanted to be on and present, and I just
- 35:49Speaker 2: brought the soles on my feet together wine, moved my
- 35:53Speaker 2: hips back and did a little bought a canassana, did
- 35:57Speaker 2: a little hip opener, and breathe. I mean I probably
- 36:00Speaker 2: did three cycles of breath mm hmm. And one could
- 36:03Speaker 2: say that's like so measly, but it was enough, and
- 36:07Speaker 2: that was it.
- 36:09Speaker 1: I love that, and I I should say, I mean,
- 36:11Speaker 1: I genuinely cannot believe we're this far into the conversation
- 36:16Speaker 1: and Benji has only been brought up once. I mean,
- 36:21Speaker 1: basically I wanted to lead with that because I mean,
- 36:25Speaker 1: I love you, but I I you know, Benji is
- 36:28Speaker 1: just like I just want to snuggle him, you know, would.
- 36:31Speaker 2: You and the producer's mind a pan to Benji?
- 36:34Speaker 1: Oh yeah, we live for this. Yeah if okay, we
- 36:38Speaker 1: can do it. Okay, look at Benji. Benji could live
- 36:42Speaker 1: with me and my three dogs. Look at Oh he's
- 36:46Speaker 1: he's just such a master. You know, he is part
- 36:50Speaker 1: of the work you do, and I think he's part
- 36:54Speaker 1: of the the healing you do too. Would you would
- 36:58Speaker 1: you say so? I mean, he he's a blue healer,
- 37:00Speaker 1: to which, as a word person, I'm like, I love
- 37:02Speaker 1: that he's a healer and a healer. What part does
- 37:07Speaker 1: Benji play the presence of Benji and so much of
- 37:10Speaker 1: so many of your videos and so many of the
- 37:11Speaker 1: things you do online. What role does he play for
- 37:14Speaker 1: you and for the audience?
- 37:15Speaker 2: It's changed over the years. If I'm being honest and
- 37:19Speaker 2: I'm like, just now, I like garnered the confidence to
- 37:23Speaker 2: talk about Benji with the utmost serious like just earnestly,
- 37:26Speaker 2: So thank you for the opportunity to practice that instead
- 37:29Speaker 2: of like you know, but I think early on, social
- 37:35Speaker 2: media has changed, YouTube has changed. Everything has changed a
- 37:37Speaker 2: lot since I began the YouTube channel with my business partner,
- 37:41Speaker 2: Chris Sharp, And I think in the beginning I really
- 37:44Speaker 2: liked having something to post, whether that was my dog
- 37:48Speaker 2: Blue before Benji or Benji. But then as people started
- 37:53Speaker 2: to actually engage with the channel, I loved it as
- 37:56Speaker 2: a real tool that I did not overthink, trust me,
- 37:59Speaker 2: but was a tool for creating a real space that
- 38:04Speaker 2: felt like human. And you mentioned this, and I admire
- 38:09Speaker 2: this greatly in your work. I hope you can hear
- 38:11Speaker 2: me when I say that that there is a lot
- 38:14Speaker 2: of energy that is put into creating an equanimity, a
- 38:22Speaker 2: sense of like we're in this together and I'm right
- 38:24Speaker 2: here with you versus like what can happen in both directions?
- 38:31Speaker 2: And maybe I'm full of it, but I believe in
- 38:34Speaker 2: my heart that Benji has actually been a really beautiful
- 38:37Speaker 2: tool for that, for just quietly creating an environment kind
- 38:44Speaker 2: of showing not talking about, but just having the environment
- 38:49Speaker 2: feel like home, really home. In the early days, I
- 38:52Speaker 2: would ask a friend to watch Benji while we filmed,
- 38:55Speaker 2: and I think the first time that he couldn't watch Benji.
- 38:57Speaker 2: Then we had Benji caraling all over and guess what,
- 38:59Speaker 2: people love it. So what was I thinking? Puppies sell?
- 39:04Speaker 1: Yeah, better than better than sex, or at least alongside sucked.
- 39:09Speaker 1: It's like sex and puppies, you know, right, It's like
- 39:11Speaker 1: if you're gonna be online, that's yeah. No, I think
- 39:15Speaker 1: you're right. And I you know that back to that
- 39:17Speaker 1: word embodiment or those these words we've been using, like honest, honesty, quite, courage,
- 39:22Speaker 1: showing up. You know, animals do that like they do
- 39:25Speaker 1: not one thing. One thing I wrote as their sugar
- 39:28Speaker 1: is you can't fake the core and and and you know,
- 39:32Speaker 1: humans keep trying to right, but animals never try. They
- 39:37Speaker 1: never try to. They always show up. If they want
- 39:39Speaker 1: to lick your face, They're going to try to lick
- 39:41Speaker 1: your face, you know, if and if they want to
- 39:44Speaker 1: lounge and have a deep snooze, as Benji often does
- 39:47Speaker 1: while the rest of us are doing things like downward
- 39:49Speaker 1: dog and cat cow. That's what Benji does, and I
- 39:54Speaker 1: there's something very ancient and wise about seeing that enacted.
- 40:00Speaker 2: They're mirrors, just as we are for each other, or
- 40:03Speaker 2: can be. You know, when we are we don't need
- 40:07Speaker 2: to be perfect. And I'm talking to myself, but when
- 40:09Speaker 2: we allow ourselves to slow down and be present, I think, yeah,
- 40:15Speaker 2: we are mirrors for one another, and that definitely does
- 40:20Speaker 2: not exclude the animals we live with. In fact, I
- 40:23Speaker 2: feel like Benji, I'm totally going to say this, but
- 40:27Speaker 2: I am a better person, a better human. I am
- 40:30Speaker 2: a better community member, I think because of what Benji
- 40:33Speaker 2: brings to my life and the way he mirrors my
- 40:35Speaker 2: own energy back to me. And you know, we always
- 40:39Speaker 2: laugh because if my husband's on the mat at home,
- 40:41Speaker 2: Benji's all over I'm acting like a puppy even though
- 40:44Speaker 2: as well, but with me. He knows exactly where to
- 40:47Speaker 2: go because we have He can feel when I'm getting
- 40:50Speaker 2: ready to teach, especially were we are kind of locked in.
- 40:54Speaker 2: It's not a joke. We're our nervous systems are communicating.
- 40:58Speaker 2: And I think that's great reminder for all of us.
- 41:01Speaker 2: And of course just the unconditional love aspect that he
- 41:06Speaker 2: teaches or he brings out in me.
- 41:09Speaker 1: Yeah, and maybe, and I think to some degree that's
- 41:13Speaker 1: connected to the ways that we can believe in ourselves.
- 41:16Speaker 1: You know, we bring we bring that kind of stillness
- 41:22Speaker 1: or solidity into the communities that we live in and
- 41:26Speaker 1: in the families that we're a part of, in the
- 41:28Speaker 1: friendship circles that we contribute to, and a wonderful way
- 41:33Speaker 1: to kind of nurture and practice and cultivate that stillness
- 41:37Speaker 1: certainly begins on the mat. So what's next for you?
- 41:50Speaker 1: I mean, I know that you have your beautiful find
- 41:54Speaker 1: what feels good app and platform that is building a
- 41:57Speaker 1: whole other community that's adjacent to you. Go with Adrian,
- 42:02Speaker 1: where are you ahead? Next to your heart?
- 42:04Speaker 2: Thank you for asking. I am I'm looking up to you.
- 42:11Speaker 2: I'm looking to the writers and the storytellers right now,
- 42:15Speaker 2: I have been called to get it down, and I
- 42:22Speaker 2: think i'm because I'm talking with you all, just say
- 42:26Speaker 2: I think I've I keep stumbling because I think I
- 42:29Speaker 2: have to have the perfect it. What is it going
- 42:31Speaker 2: to be? It could be this, you could be this,
- 42:33Speaker 2: And it's so funny. I'm so clear about what I
- 42:34Speaker 2: don't want it to be. I think that's a good thing.
- 42:36Speaker 2: But I think I think I'm finally realizing I'm never
- 42:42Speaker 2: going to be in the season where I know what
- 42:44Speaker 2: it is. I have to just commit to the practice
- 42:46Speaker 2: of regular writing. So I'd like to write something and
- 42:52Speaker 2: share it with all of the beautiful people around the
- 42:54Speaker 2: world that I've had the privilege to connect with in
- 42:57Speaker 2: ways big or small. So that's a big thing. And
- 43:00Speaker 2: then I'm also starting a conscious movement apparel line. And
- 43:05Speaker 2: I can't say too much because I don't know when
- 43:08Speaker 2: this will air, but I can say that I have, yeah,
- 43:12Speaker 2: talk about devotion. I just have been devoted with a
- 43:16Speaker 2: very small new team cool to kind of yeah, focus
- 43:21Speaker 2: on a people center quality and mean, that's awesome. You know.
- 43:26Speaker 1: I just have to say, you didn't ask directly for
- 43:29Speaker 1: the writing advice, but I'm just yes, behind my eyes
- 43:34Speaker 1: I was like, please, I mean, honestly, you you are
- 43:38Speaker 1: so right, your instincts are right. You will never find
- 43:42Speaker 1: it until you begin writing. It's you know, it would
- 43:45Speaker 1: be like me just you know, watching people you know
- 43:50Speaker 1: do the perfect downward dog and thinking that the first
- 43:52Speaker 1: is that the first time that I can do it,
- 43:54Speaker 1: it's going to be perfect too. And my job is
- 43:56Speaker 1: to just watch other people do it perfect, and then
- 43:58Speaker 1: I'll just hop in. It doesn't work that way. You
- 44:00Speaker 1: got to practice, You got to write, You got to
- 44:03Speaker 1: find your way. The writing will teach you how to write.
- 44:08Speaker 1: The story will teach you how to tell it. And
- 44:11Speaker 1: it's very messy, and it's very scary, and it's very
- 44:16Speaker 1: often you feel like you're kind of wandering through the wilderness.
- 44:20Speaker 1: I always liken it, honestly, to use actually an ocean
- 44:23Speaker 1: wilderness metaphors. It's like you're swimming, and you're swimming, and
- 44:26Speaker 1: you're swimming and you cannot see the shore, and you
- 44:29Speaker 1: start to think the shore is never going to appear,
- 44:31Speaker 1: and then you keep going and suddenly you find yourself,
- 44:35Speaker 1: you know, crawling on your hands and knees onto the sand,
- 44:38Speaker 1: off the rocks and your home and you've done that thing.
- 44:42Speaker 1: So get to it, girl, and if you want to write,
- 44:45Speaker 1: you just have to stop thinking about it and you
- 44:48Speaker 1: have to stop talking about it. One of my favorite
- 44:50Speaker 1: poetry professors at the University of Minnesota, Michael Dennis Brown.
- 44:54Speaker 1: I was in his class when I was nineteen and
- 44:57Speaker 1: he was a very formative person for me, and he
- 44:58Speaker 1: would always say, don't think right, don't think right. So
- 45:03Speaker 1: that's my advice to you. We want to read your story.
- 45:06Speaker 1: We need your story. Thank you, Thank you for sharing
- 45:11Speaker 1: it with us today on Mind over Mountain, Adrian Mischler,
- 45:14Speaker 1: What a delight that has been to talk to you.
- 45:17Speaker 2: Thank you so much. Thank you for all that you're
