- 0:00Speaker 1: Now as we know. I'm sure that you saw the
- 0:02Speaker 1: vision hundreds of Territorians gathered on the steps of Parliament
- 0:06Speaker 1: House yesterday to rally against the issues that we've seen
- 0:09Speaker 1: with crime. It follows on from absolutely devastating situations that
- 0:14Speaker 1: we've seen around the Northern Territory this year alone. We
- 0:17Speaker 1: know that we have had four people killed in the
- 0:20Speaker 1: last sixty days, one of those a domestic violence incident,
- 0:26Speaker 1: allegedly one of those a person who was assaulted in
- 0:30Speaker 1: Rapid Creek. Then, of course we understand and know all
- 0:34Speaker 1: too well the devastation of the death of Declan Lavity.
- 0:37Speaker 1: We spoke to his mother Samara on the show yesterday,
- 0:41Speaker 1: and we also are incredibly saddened following on from the
- 0:46Speaker 1: terrible situation last week. With Seafat now joining me on
- 0:51Speaker 1: the line right now is Charles Darwin. University's Bangladeshi Student
- 0:54Speaker 1: Association General Secretary Zinat Khan. Now to you, Oh hang on,
- 1:02Speaker 1: let's try that again. Zinnai At Kahn, good morning to
- 1:08Speaker 1: you this morning, Good morning, how are you not too bad?
- 1:13Speaker 1: Thank you so much for your time this morning. Now
- 1:16Speaker 1: I understand that a tribute concert is happening in memory
- 1:20Speaker 1: of Sea fat and it's going to be held in
- 1:23Speaker 1: dawn this weekend. Tell me a little bit more about it.
- 1:28Speaker 2: Yeah, So we are organizing a tribute concert. It's called
- 1:33Speaker 2: a tribute concert for Seafat. Basically, it's the continuation of
- 1:39Speaker 2: what we started after Seats, after Seapak was going to
- 1:44Speaker 2: the hospital. If you remember, if you could recall, we
- 1:47Speaker 2: started a demonstration at university and then a candle light
- 1:51Speaker 2: Regil and then we started a petition and then now
- 1:54Speaker 2: we're continuing our demonstration with the tribute concert. It is
- 1:59Speaker 2: basically a platform where we are using the fast name
- 2:03Speaker 2: as the symbol and SIFA represent every one of us.
- 2:06Speaker 2: If it was a very close friend of mine, Me
- 2:08Speaker 2: and Sipas came to Darwin on the very same light
- 2:11Speaker 2: and the very same day, and we have been kept
- 2:13Speaker 2: in touch. But what happened to Sipa was very unfortunate
- 2:17Speaker 2: and it should not be happy. It should not been happened,
- 2:20Speaker 2: and we want to make sure and we want to
- 2:22Speaker 2: use this platform to raise awaress that this does not
- 2:25Speaker 2: happen to any of the students ever.
- 2:27Speaker 1: Again, Zinat, what has gone on is is absolutely terrible.
- 2:33Speaker 1: There is no you know, there is just no tolerance
- 2:36Speaker 1: for this kind of behavior there shouldn't be in the community.
- 2:40Speaker 1: You've just touched on the your relationship with Sifat and
- 2:45Speaker 1: and the fact that it came to Australia together. Did
- 2:49Speaker 1: your English taste together as well as I understand it?
- 2:53Speaker 2: Mm hmm. Were mean? Sifad met back in November last
- 2:58Speaker 2: year and then we kind of did the same process
- 3:01Speaker 2: of coming here with all together, kept keeping in touch
- 3:05Speaker 2: with each other. So yeah, it's been very hard on people,
- 3:09Speaker 2: on myself and also the other students who came altogether
- 3:13Speaker 2: at the same time.
- 3:14Speaker 1: Mike, can you tell me what he was like?
- 3:18Speaker 2: She first was our very jolly minded student. He was
- 3:22Speaker 2: always calling me like, how is it going, how, what's update?
- 3:27Speaker 1: What?
- 3:27Speaker 2: Even after we called visa, he was very excited to
- 3:31Speaker 2: come in here. He was like what should we pack?
- 3:33Speaker 2: How we saw wing? Uh? Do we want to get
- 3:36Speaker 2: a room together? So he was very excited about this
- 3:39Speaker 2: whole new journey, even though like we had we were
- 3:43Speaker 2: going through the same experience. But he had felt like
- 3:45Speaker 2: that he is going to start a new life here.
- 3:49Speaker 2: He was already about it. I'm really vested with the
- 3:53Speaker 2: fact that what happened to him, because he was the
- 3:57Speaker 2: one who was enjoying his life more more, more jollyly
- 4:03Speaker 2: and more fun way, but what happened to him is
- 4:06Speaker 2: absolutely devastated.
- 4:09Speaker 1: Can you tell me how are you and the other
- 4:12Speaker 1: Bangladeshi students feeling at this point in time in terms
- 4:16Speaker 1: of your safety.
- 4:20Speaker 2: To be very honest, we feel if we have been scared,
- 4:23Speaker 2: we have been like very much feeling unsafe at this steet.
- 4:30Speaker 2: I myself is like feeling very unsecure and insecure about
- 4:35Speaker 2: a few things, like I do night chies. But when
- 4:38Speaker 2: I came three or four the morning in my place,
- 4:40Speaker 2: I'm staying at any lots, and I see and I
- 4:43Speaker 2: feel there's this certain fear around even though I know
- 4:47Speaker 2: they are like police to five or ten meters away
- 4:51Speaker 2: patrolling in security gus, but there's this certain feeling of
- 4:55Speaker 2: a certain feeling back out of my hand that some
- 4:57Speaker 2: things might happen. But yeah, you know that we have
- 5:02Speaker 2: spoken to BEG ministers, We have spoken to Kate Warden,
- 5:07Speaker 2: we have spoken to police as a Simpolice directors and
- 5:11Speaker 2: they have also, like you know, made sure that there
- 5:14Speaker 2: are enough measurements are being taken to give this for
- 5:19Speaker 2: prosecuity to these students. But the effect of what happened
- 5:23Speaker 2: might just stay for a couple of weeks or maybe
- 5:26Speaker 2: a couple of months, until that we eventually capable forgetting
- 5:30Speaker 2: the change.
- 5:32Speaker 1: Yeah, it's such a terrible, terrible situation and one which
- 5:36Speaker 1: is must be so difficult for you guys when you
- 5:39Speaker 1: are here and you're away from your family.
- 5:44Speaker 2: Yeah, it's not that this is a small news that
- 5:47Speaker 2: my family mortage. The news sped like a wildfire, so
- 5:53Speaker 2: in my back in my family when I didn't let
- 5:55Speaker 2: them know because I didn't want to let my parents
- 5:57Speaker 2: worry about myself, but directly let them know. But somehow
- 6:02Speaker 2: that reaches there, and I'm pretty sure every other students'
- 6:05Speaker 2: friends already know about the incident. So back at home,
- 6:09Speaker 2: they're worrying that the sender kids here, how they're going
- 6:14Speaker 2: to life. Even though I'm like doing my masters. There
- 6:16Speaker 2: are students who are doing bachelors, were very young at age,
- 6:19Speaker 2: were very mature about things, excited about life, so their
- 6:24Speaker 2: parents worrying is such a different level that there are
- 6:28Speaker 2: some just their young kids to be back out here
- 6:31Speaker 2: all alone to Yeah, it's been tough on our parents
- 6:33Speaker 2: as well.
- 6:34Speaker 1: Sea. You said that you caught up with the chief Minister,
- 6:38Speaker 1: also Minister Kate Warden and others. After meeting with them,
- 6:43Speaker 1: does that give you sort of any more of a
- 6:46Speaker 1: sense that you are going to feel safer or that
- 6:51Speaker 1: you know that something is going to be done to
- 6:53Speaker 1: ensure that our international students are safe.
- 6:58Speaker 2: We have submitted our petition to the Chief Minister's office.
- 7:02Speaker 2: We have also in communicating with them regularly. I just
- 7:08Speaker 2: had a conversation with a Cake Burden that she's dropping
- 7:11Speaker 2: by tomorrow at our concert, and like there are a
- 7:15Speaker 2: few other ministers who is also dropping by. So I
- 7:19Speaker 2: want to believe that these are the positive steps that
- 7:24Speaker 2: Ministress and other personals are actually concerned about us. They
- 7:28Speaker 2: are actually trying to communicate with us. They're also trying
- 7:32Speaker 2: to help us. They want to listen to us. So
- 7:35Speaker 2: we are using this concert as a platform to raise
- 7:38Speaker 2: awareness that the seven point petition we started. We want
- 7:42Speaker 2: to again ask the ministers and our community members so
- 7:47Speaker 2: that our voices are hard and the voices what we
- 7:51Speaker 2: started after the US was wind Park does not fade away.
- 7:56Speaker 1: I think it's a really good thing to do. And
- 7:59Speaker 1: now tell me where can people can people actually you
- 8:02Speaker 1: know they can obviously come along, what time is it happening?
- 8:06Speaker 1: How can I get involved in that if I want to?
- 8:09Speaker 2: Yeah, So I'm just going to give you a little
- 8:11Speaker 2: background about what we are actually planning. So there's this
- 8:15Speaker 2: good concert to it, and also there's a ticket if
- 8:18Speaker 2: you want buy. So my majority of the ticket process
- 8:22Speaker 2: will we will create as the First Memorial Fund, which
- 8:26Speaker 2: will be an emergency fund to facilitated students who are
- 8:30Speaker 2: going to come in regardless of their effidency agenders or
- 8:34Speaker 2: the country they're coming from. It will be emergency fan
- 8:37Speaker 2: to facilate with those students in case of emergencies that
- 8:41Speaker 2: if they can't find, say for accommodations, or they need
- 8:45Speaker 2: to transportations, or they need any kind of help smooth
- 8:48Speaker 2: in their journey of twin our the First Memorial Fund
- 8:53Speaker 2: will will facilitate those students. So if you want to
- 8:57Speaker 2: join in, there's a you can go and check out
- 9:00Speaker 2: our page. Well, this is Student Association Starts University where
- 9:04Speaker 2: we are at. There is an event details on it
- 9:07Speaker 2: and there's event right event right ticket link. You can
- 9:11Speaker 2: go in the you can buy the tickets and join
- 9:14Speaker 2: in on the concert.
- 9:17Speaker 1: Now, can people leave their messages and tributes at that
- 9:20Speaker 1: event for say, fat as well.
- 9:24Speaker 2: Yes, we have a proper We achieved four different segments
- 9:29Speaker 2: on things, and one segment is completely dedicated to the
- 9:32Speaker 2: path where we will open up a path corner. It
- 9:37Speaker 2: is basically a corner where we will try to showcuate
- 9:40Speaker 2: to such memories and there will be a board and
- 9:44Speaker 2: you can write a message to Sifath or to such
- 9:47Speaker 2: family and we will try to preserve all those messages
- 9:50Speaker 2: and try to send them back at home or his
- 9:53Speaker 2: family is in despair right now.
- 9:56Speaker 1: Yeah, I was just going to ask how is his
- 9:58Speaker 1: family going at the moment, so as.
- 10:02Speaker 2: You was just yesterday was were altant back at home?
- 10:08Speaker 2: And who thing that side is arriving at Baladas today?
- 10:13Speaker 2: So yeah, it's a few very hard moments for his family.
- 10:17Speaker 2: Because he was the only child. I obviously know that,
- 10:20Speaker 2: and it is obviously going to be a very tough
- 10:23Speaker 2: time for his parents.
- 10:25Speaker 1: It's going to be such a tough time for his parents,
- 10:28Speaker 1: his family, and for people, you know, for you, for
- 10:32Speaker 1: all of his friends, and for the international student community,
- 10:36Speaker 1: the Bangladeshi Student Association. I would imagine it's going to
- 10:40Speaker 1: be a really, really tough time for all of you.
- 10:43Speaker 1: I think it's a really good thing that you have
