- If the episode inspires you and your motivated, Jerry Weldy will be providing a Presentation and Tour about the Battle of Birch Coulee today Thursday, Sept. 3 from 6-7:30pm at Birch Coulee County Park. If you can’t make it and at some point you find yourself in New Ulm, stop by the Brown County Historical Society. Maybe Jerry will be working, so you can talk with him about the U.S. Dakota War. September 2, 1862: The Ghost of Birch Coulee In the gray pre-dawn light, 170 volunteer soldiers and civilians lay asleep on a cold prairie knoll. Twenty supply wagons formed a tight, half-acre horseshoe around five canvas tents. Tied to the wagons, ninety cavalry horses shifted in the damp air. No one inside the camp heard the rustle in the tall grass. Hundreds of Dakota warriors were creeping closer on all sides. Within minutes, an explosive thirty-one-hour siege would begin. It would become the bloodiest single engagement for U.S. forces and the longest continuous siege for the entire U.S.–Dakota War. The green recruits would fight for their lives on open ground. Yet the harder battle for truth would come later, as senior military commanders rewrote official dispatches to protect their own reputations. A Grisly Mission on the Frontier On August 31, 1862, a column of soldiers marched out from Fort Ridgely. Weeks of violent conflict had left the Minnesota River Valley in ruins. Colonel Henry Hastings Sibley needed a force to locate and bury slaughtered settlers. He assigned Company A of the Sixth Minnesota Volunteer Infantry, commanded by Captain Hiram P. Grant. Joined by Captain Joseph Anderson’s Cullen Guard cavalry, the detachment totaled roughly 150 men. Former Indian agent, Major Joseph R. Brown, rode alongside them to offer his frontier expertise. Many in the ranks were just boys. Seventeen-year-old Private, Robert K. Boyd, had run away from home to enlist. Sixteen-year-old, Charles Zarnke, had joined after fleeing hardship as a Polish immigrant. Over two agonizing days, the detail buried more than fifty bodies near Redwood Ferry and Beaver Creek. Along the trail, they rescued Justine Kreigher, a severely wounded woman, who had been crawling through the brush for days. According to historical unit logs, the officers spotted no signs of hostiles. They concluded the area was entirely clear. As evening approached on September 1, Captain Grant selected a campsite. He picked a gentle prairie knoll two hundred yards west of Birch Coulee. The Dakota called this wooded, sixty-foot-deep ravine Tanpa Yukan, meaning "Place of the White Birch". The men arranged twenty heavy supply wagons into a tight horseshoe corral. They pitched five white canvas Sibley tents inside the circle. Picket lines held over ninety cavalry horses in an open field. The green recruits ate a warm meal and settled in for sleep. The Ambush at Tanpa Yukan Darkness hid a silent trap. Hundreds of Dakota warriors under Chief Gray Bird, Mankato, Big Eagle, and Red Legs surrounded the sleeping camp. The bright white canvas tents stood out sharply on the open prairie. At 4:30 in the morning on September 2, a sentry spotted movement in the grass and fired. Instantly, a deafening volley shattered the silence. Bullets tore through the tents. Young Charles Zarnke was among the very first struck in the opening crash. Within minutes, over thirty men fell wounded or dying. Gunfire cut down nearly all ninety horses in their pickets. When Major Joseph R. Brown was wounded in the neck during the opening attack, Captain Joseph Anderson took charge of the defense. The falling bodies of the slaughtered horses created an immediate physical barricade that saved the sleeping infantrymen from being instantly overrun. Surviving soldiers dropped to their bellies behind the carcasses. Using bayonets and pocketknives, they desperately scraped out shallow rifle pits. Modern interpretive signs at Birch Coulee use sketches by soldier Albert Colgrave to help visitors visualize the camp and the surrounding Dakota positions. Then a critical complication arose. Soldiers pried open wooden crates only to discover their ammunition did not fit their rifles. Under relentless fire, teenage recruits had to shave down lead bullets with pocketknives just to load their weapons. According to survivor memoirs, Robert K. Boyd left the medical tent twice to reenter the fight. Bullets shattered his collarbone and struck his face and thigh. He would carry that lead bullet in his leg for the remaining seventy years of his life. Beyond the perimeter, Dakota fighters strapped woven grass turbans to their heads. They pressed flat against the dirt, crawling forward through the tall prairie cover with their knees spread wide. The trap was sprung, and the siege began. The 31-Hour Siege and Ruse Hours turned into a brutal test of endurance. Trapped behind bloated horse carcasses, the men baked under a relentless late-summer sun. They had no food. Birch Coulee Creek flowed nearby, but heavy gunfire cut off all access to water. To fight off total exhaustion and dry mouths, pinned-down soldiers sucked on lead bullets to induce salivation. Sixteen miles away across the open prairie, Fort Ridgely sentries heard the distinct thud of gunfire. Colonel Samuel McPhail rode out with a relief column of two hundred and forty men. They approached close enough to spot the smoke. But Chief Mankato took fifty Dakota warriors out to intercept them. According to later Dakota accounts, Mankato and a small force whooped and shouted from the tall grass and ravine, convincing McPhail that he faced several hundred fighters. Rattled by the ruse, McPhail halted two miles short, pitched camp, and sent a messenger back to Fort Ridgely demanding artillery. The siege dragged through a pitch-black night into a second scorching day. Finally, on September 3, Colonel Sibley arrived with 1,000 men and an artillery brigade. Shelling forced the Dakota fighters to withdraw down the river valley. At eleven in the morning, Sibley’s main force marched into a horrific scene. Thirteen soldiers lay dead on the field, nearly fifty were severely wounded, and ninety horses sat stiff in the sun. In his later account, Chief Big Eagle recalled that only two Dakota warriors were killed in the fight. The siege stood as the bloodiest single engagement for U.S. forces and the longest continuous battle of the entire U.S.–Dakota War. Bureaucracy and Scapegoats When the exhausted survivors returned to Fort Ridgely, military politics instantly took over. Colonel Henry Hastings Sibley faced sharp public outrage over the heavy loss of men and stock. In official reports and press dispatches, Sibley called the fight the "attack on J. R. Brown’s party," reinforcing a command controversy that would continue long after the battle. This phrasing deflected military accountability away from the army command structure. Captain Grant spent the rest of his life fighting to clear his name. Critics falsely claimed that Grant had picked a recklessly dangerous campsite. Decades later, truth added another layer to the narrative. In 1926, survivor Robert K. Boyd returned to survey the battle site. According to Boyd’s published field measurements, the prairie knoll offered subtle rises and slopes that explained how the engagement unfolded. Furthermore, army tactical boards eventually studied the Dakota skirmish methods at Birch Coulee. They revised standard infantry manuals to teach soldiers how to advance and fire from a prone position, tactics later used by American infantry in World War I. The bravery of green recruits survived the attempt to erase the battle. The Prairie Remembers The physical memory of Birch Coulee took decades to settle. In 1893, state records show the Minnesota Legislature set aside $2,500 to purchase the battlefield. Yet the state commission mistakenly bought land two miles south in Morton, raising a granite monument on the wrong site amid a continuing dispute over who had commanded the expedition. In 1899, an adjacent granite obelisk was raised to honor six Dakota individuals, including Lorenzo Lawrence, Simon, and Mary Crooks, who risked their lives to protect white settlers. Today, both fifty-foot monuments sit on a steep, flood-damaged bluff road, caught in an ongoing jurisdictional dispute over repair costs that leaves access difficult. It took until 1929 for the state to formally secure the actual battleground two miles away. On the authentic battlefield, self-guided trails wind through the prairie grass. Modern visitors can walk the paths and read the battle through the documented words of both Captain Joseph Anderson and Mdewakanton Chief Big Eagle, illustrated by soldier Albert Colgrave’s sketches. Birch Coulee reminds us that history is never just one single voice. When we have the courage to look at the past with total honesty, we discover the empathy and resilience required to build a more understanding world today.
