- 0:00Speaker 1: Welcome back to the Yukon Men's Basketball Coaches Show, joined
- 0:02Speaker 1: by a special guest, Seth Greenberg of ESPN and coach.
- 0:07Speaker 1: You've been around this game a long long time, and
- 0:10Speaker 1: you've seen Yukon under Dan Hurley these last three four seasons.
- 0:16Speaker 1: It looks like they've got a team that might be
- 0:18Speaker 1: able to go deep again, which would be the third
- 0:21Speaker 1: time in the last four years. What's your assessment of
- 0:23Speaker 1: what you've seen in the first couple of months with Yukon.
- 0:28Speaker 2: I started watching him this summer in their set workouts
- 0:31Speaker 2: about once a week, and you know, in typical Dan
- 0:34Speaker 2: Hurly fashion, each and every time you've seen you see
- 0:37Speaker 2: something a little bit different. They get better. They get
- 0:40Speaker 2: better because of their work, they get better because of
- 0:42Speaker 2: the habits that they've developed, they get better because of
- 0:45Speaker 2: understanding and as we know, they're always held to a standard.
- 0:50Speaker 2: I look at this team, they're still working progress. They've
- 0:53Speaker 2: got to continue to get better. I'd like to see
- 0:55Speaker 2: them play a little bit more pace early in the
- 0:57Speaker 2: clock in terms of not being so regimented to the sets,
- 1:00Speaker 2: which you're starting to do, but in terms of player
- 1:04Speaker 2: development guy and role development en roll guys championing roles
- 1:10Speaker 2: and guys filling voids that maybe they need to have
- 1:13Speaker 2: filled from last year. They've done a great job with it.
- 1:15Speaker 2: Two headed monster to point, two headed monster up front.
- 1:19Speaker 2: Brandon Bones adds a different dimension, but you watch like
- 1:22Speaker 2: a Jaden Ross in his development. Stewie has his versatility,
- 1:26Speaker 2: Alex playing the best basketball of his career with confidence
- 1:30Speaker 2: and force. It's been fun to watch.
- 1:33Speaker 1: Yeah, the two headed monster things seth which I don't know.
- 1:37Speaker 1: The center doesn't exist anymore in basketball. It feels like
- 1:40Speaker 1: but Yukon for going on four years now had a
- 1:43Speaker 1: two headed monster at that position. It looks like they
- 1:46Speaker 1: got it going again. Eric Raba, freshman left hander seven footer,
- 1:52Speaker 1: really was a huge, huge part of their early success
- 1:55Speaker 1: this year because Terrace Reid was out hurt. That was
- 1:59Speaker 1: a major developant for Dan Hurley. I think because he
- 2:02Speaker 1: got a chance to play, ry us start him in
- 2:04Speaker 1: I think five games and find out that this guy
- 2:07Speaker 1: can really help us this year.
- 2:11Speaker 2: The best way to get acclimated to the speed and
- 2:14Speaker 2: the force that you need to play is to play.
- 2:17Speaker 2: And you know I said this about the situation here
- 2:21Speaker 2: at You've got the same situation at Kansas in a
- 2:23Speaker 2: lot of ways. And that when you you know, your
- 2:26Speaker 2: team gets better when guys are out, because when Tyris
- 2:29Speaker 2: is out, someone else to step up. Eric has stepped up.
- 2:32Speaker 2: He's gotten legitimate reps in game situations against the best
- 2:36Speaker 2: teams in America where he had to redefine playing hard,
- 2:39Speaker 2: redefine being physical, redefine the speed that they're playing with,
- 2:43Speaker 2: redefined siding and reading the defense is redefined, being alert
- 2:47Speaker 2: off the ball. So he'd give him some rep protection.
- 2:50Speaker 2: So you know, a lot of times these injuries open
- 2:52Speaker 2: up doors and make your team that much better. I've
- 2:55Speaker 2: seen that with Jayden Ross, I've seen it with Eric.
- 2:57Speaker 2: I've seen it throughout Dan's time Connecticut. He coaches every
- 3:03Speaker 2: single player the same way. They all get coach hard.
- 3:05Speaker 2: They all have a standard. They all are asked to
- 3:08Speaker 2: compete at a level and basically be uncomfortable and learning
- 3:12Speaker 2: to be comfortable being uncomfortable. And that's exactly what you
- 3:16Speaker 2: saw with Ericsur in those five games. And now you
- 3:18Speaker 2: can put them in any situation, in any situation during
- 3:22Speaker 2: the course of the game, and he's going to be
- 3:25Speaker 2: ready to compete and be part of the solution, not
- 3:28Speaker 2: part of the problem.
- 3:29Speaker 1: Yeah, the last five games with Riva and Read available,
- 3:33Speaker 1: they have gone twenty nine or forty eight from the field,
- 3:37Speaker 1: which well over fifty percent thirty five rebounds between them.
- 3:42Speaker 1: They've really done a lot of great things in terms
- 3:45Speaker 1: of block shots, shooting over sixty percent. When you play
- 3:49Speaker 1: against a team like this and they do have that
- 3:52Speaker 1: depth at the middle position, the center position, how much
- 3:56Speaker 1: more difficult is that for an opponent.
- 4:00Speaker 2: It's significantly different, especially because they both have a little
- 4:03Speaker 2: bit different personalities. You know, Mike, You've been around this
- 4:05Speaker 2: game so long and you understand you have one guy
- 4:07Speaker 2: that's picking and popping and knocking down threes or at
- 4:09Speaker 2: least a threat to and then you have the other
- 4:12Speaker 2: guy that's can short roll and pass or short or
- 4:14Speaker 2: rolled to the front of the rim or slip who
- 4:18Speaker 2: creates angles. Uh, it's huge. You know, you're playing with
- 4:24Speaker 2: the same system but against two different players, but both
- 4:27Speaker 2: very very you know, impactful when they're on the floor.
- 4:30Speaker 2: So you know, this is not the first time you
- 4:33Speaker 2: made a great observation, you know, I mean, Donovan paid
- 4:36Speaker 2: his apprenticeship and you know, and you know that was
- 4:39Speaker 2: very valuable, and having two bigs is absolutely huge especially
- 4:45Speaker 2: because the way they use them, and they're not just bigs,
- 4:48Speaker 2: they're gonna they're there out and floor dribble handoffs. You know,
- 4:51Speaker 2: they're setting flare screens and slipped into the rim.
- 4:54Speaker 1: Uh.
- 4:54Speaker 2: They're really learned and Tyres has really learned to play
- 4:57Speaker 2: double teams, which is really important. It's fun watching the
- 5:02Speaker 2: development and part of the development is and you've been
- 5:04Speaker 2: a practice, it's all the skill work they do before practice.
- 5:08Speaker 2: In the early part of practice. Everyone's involved in the
- 5:10Speaker 2: one on one work. Everyone that's evolved in the ball
- 5:13Speaker 2: hand like, everyone's involved in closing out on the perimeter.
- 5:16Speaker 2: Everyone's involved in the cuttings actions that they work on.
- 5:20Speaker 2: So you're just pushing the side of the box out.
- 5:23Speaker 2: Now when you come to the game, what are you
- 5:24Speaker 2: supposed to do? You play to your strengths. You show
- 5:26Speaker 2: people what you can do, not what you can't do.
- 5:28Speaker 2: But you're improving in so many different areas because of
- 5:33Speaker 2: the cumulative effect of the way they approach practice every day.
- 5:36Speaker 1: All right, Seth Greenberg with us, take a quick time out.
- 5:39Speaker 1: We'll be back. We have Raylan Mullens to dissect. We
- 5:42Speaker 1: got Silas demer as well, and the NBA has a
- 5:46Speaker 1: load of Yukon Huskies too, and Set has plenty of
- 5:49Speaker 1: experience there. We'll talk to him some more when we
- 5:52Speaker 1: continue on the Yukon Men's Basketball Coaches Show here on
- 5:55Speaker 1: a lear Field
