- 0:04- Hello and welcome to the Pop Culture Junkie podcast.
- 0:06I'm Olivia.
- 0:08- And I'm Shauna.
- 0:10- And it's Fall Now.
- 0:11It is our second favorite F word,
- 0:14and that means we are finally in spooky season.
- 0:17So we are planning our show atopics accordingly.
- 0:22And I wanted to talk today about one of my favorite
- 0:26spooky little characters.
- 0:28All things creepy, just plain weird.
- 0:31Nothing could be weirder than what we like to call cryptids.
- 0:36So we're here today to bring you the spooky scary,
- 0:39sometimes silly vibes of cryptids.
- 0:43And if you don't necessarily know what a cryptid is,
- 0:48a cryptid is really just a pseudo science
- 0:54infocal or animal that no one can really prove exists.
- 0:59- Or does it exist?
- 1:01- Yeah, exactly.
- 1:02If you can't prove that it doesn't exist, does it?
- 1:06- God.
- 1:06- It's got a cryptid, God.
- 1:10- By those meanings.
- 1:12- We're just becoming offensive immediately.
- 1:15- Is Jesus a cryptid?
- 1:17- But if you ask someone who studies cryptids,
- 1:23crypto zoology is the study of creatures whose existence
- 1:27is disputed or unproven.
- 1:30- That's an actual study.
- 1:32That's like a thing you can study.
- 1:34- Sort of.
- 1:37- Not necessarily like accepted by the scientific community,
- 1:41but they put zoology on the end of that thing.
- 1:45- If you put zoology on the end of anything,
- 1:47then it's gonna be okay.
- 1:49- Listen, we're playing fast and loose with science
- 1:52now these days.
- 1:53(laughing)
- 1:56I think we could count it.
- 1:58- Yeah, so we wanted to talk a little bit about
- 2:01the creepy spooky, sometimes funny characters
- 2:04that we see existing within it.
- 2:06And the reason that I really wanted to talk about this
- 2:09is I am actually about to take a trip into
- 2:13a part of the United States that actually has
- 2:16quite a bit of spooky scary characters.
- 2:18And that is the Apple Action Mountains.
- 2:21- First time.
- 2:22- I feel like I don't know anything about the United States.
- 2:24I'm like, by New York, you did go to an Arizona school.
- 2:29So that shows out.
- 2:31- Go sun devil.
- 2:32(laughing)
- 2:33- No, not even that, just the Arizona public school.
- 2:36- It does show.
- 2:37- Also that.
- 2:37- But the Apple Action Mountain Trail is the,
- 2:42it's actually where the Hunger Games is set
- 2:45in the fake world, but it is the mountains on the East Coast.
- 2:50So it goes all the way up from Georgia to New York.
- 2:55But I'm going to Upstate New York.
- 3:01And one of the scariest characters that I've ever heard of
- 3:06that are technically encrypted, kind of a witch thing,
- 3:10are skin walkers.
- 3:11And I feel like skin walkers have really kind of
- 3:15had their moment recently, but I really just wanted
- 3:18to kind of dive into our favorite folklore monsters.
- 3:22- Yeah, I'm excited for this.
- 3:24You know more about it than I do.
- 3:25So you've already been teaching me things.
- 3:28Like where are the Apple Action Mountains?
- 3:30I'm like cryptosuology.
- 3:32- Yeah, there we go.
- 3:33- There we go.
- 3:34- I'm the more you know.
- 3:36- So who needs public schools?
- 3:38(laughing)
- 3:40- So cryptids are really the perfect blend
- 3:42of folklore and modern media.
- 3:44So for example, one of the most famous ones
- 3:46is the Loch Ness Monster with century old origins.
- 3:50But they're also in memes and tourist ads.
- 3:53- Chupacabra started in the 1990s in Puerto Rico,
- 3:56but is also in South Park.
- 3:58So there's definitely a lot of cross over with pop culture.
- 4:03And in a lot of horror movies.
- 4:04I know there's a Mothman horror movie too, I believe, right?
- 4:08- Yeah.
- 4:09Well, there's that movie with Richard Geer as well.
- 4:13- Yes.
- 4:13- And what's her name, the redhead from
- 4:16Will and Grace?
- 4:17- Debra Messing.
- 4:18- Yeah, Debra Messing.
- 4:19Yeah, the Mothman prophecies.
- 4:21Weird movie.
- 4:22- Yeah. - Real strange movie.
- 4:24- Is it actually about the Mothman?
- 4:26- Yeah.
- 4:27Yeah, there you go.
- 4:28Yeah, I would say, you know, if you want a weird time,
- 4:33like I watched it, actually kind of really hung over.
- 4:35And it was, it was a weird movie to go into.
- 4:39I don't know if I'd say watch it under those conditions,
- 4:41but we have seen cryptids throughout a lot
- 4:45of popular stories.
- 4:46Like you mentioned, we have Nessie,
- 4:49which has been such a popular folk tale or legend.
- 4:54All over the world, really we've seen
- 4:56these different characters pop up.
- 4:58And of course, anytime there is folklore,
- 5:01like we talked about with our romanticy,
- 5:04it really becomes this like retelling.
- 5:06And how do we re-look at it?
- 5:08I think most people in America would say
- 5:10that their first hearing of a cryptid
- 5:12was ultimately like Bigfoot.
- 5:15So Shana, when do you think you first heard of Bigfoot?
- 5:19- Oh God.
- 5:20I don't know, I guess I must have been a little kid.
- 5:23I've never believed in Bigfoot or the Loch Ness monster.
- 5:27It's one of those things you just always know
- 5:29that they're probably not real,
- 5:33but it could be.
- 5:34It could be.
- 5:35I think Bigfoot is probably the most well known,
- 5:40I think cryptid just people like saying
- 5:43that they're spotting him and he pops up in TV ads
- 5:46and in AI YouTube videos and like different brands
- 5:50of clothes and stuff.
- 5:52But I'm gonna say probably when I was a little kid,
- 5:56what about you?
- 5:57- Okay.
- 5:58I think yeah, I wanna say it was probably like
- 6:02an e-bombs world kind of thing.
- 6:04- Yeah.
- 6:05- Where people would talk about it or like driving through
- 6:08the United States, there'd be like these weird like Bigfoot
- 6:11Bigfoot crossing, like always those tiny little stores.
- 6:15- Yeah.
- 6:16Yeah, I don't know.
- 6:18I mean, I think that do I think that like Bigfoot existed
- 6:23a maybe not, but do I think that there was something
- 6:28at some point that like was like a Bigfoot
- 6:33or like a Loch Ness monster?
- 6:35Maybe.
- 6:36The Loch Ness monster seems a little more likely
- 6:39like dinosaur reptilian, but yeah, I mean,
- 6:42they both could have existed, but it's not like they're,
- 6:45if they've existed since, but like the 1800s,
- 6:48they're probably dead by now unless there's like
- 6:50a little family of Bigfoot.
- 6:53- I mean, think about a freaking alligator man,
- 6:55those things don't die.
- 6:57- That's true, it could be the same Loch Ness monster.
- 7:00- Yeah, those things just like the Scottish alligator.
- 7:03- Is a jackalope a cryptid?
- 7:06Is that's probably the first like living in Arizona.
- 7:12There's this urban legend that there's this creature
- 7:14called a jackalope, which is a mix between like a jack rabbit
- 7:18and an antelope, so it's essentially just a jack rabbit
- 7:21with antlers.
- 7:22But it's like growing up in Arizona, everybody's like,
- 7:26ooh, the jackalope.
- 7:27- Okay, a jackalope is a mythical American creature
- 7:32which is best described as a tall tail and not a true cryptid.
- 7:37And yeah, it's basically a legend that started in the 1930s
- 7:43because a taxidermist brother Duwo created them
- 7:47by attaching deer antlers to a jackrabbit carcass.
- 7:51- Yes, I love that like, it's just a taxidermy.
- 7:55Like the re-recreation.
- 7:56- They started it like a hundred years ago,
- 7:58but if you go to like random gas station,
- 8:01like give shops in Arizona, you can buy a stuffed jackalope.
- 8:05(laughing)
- 8:07- That is so funny.
- 8:08Like that it's just, now I think of like all those weird
- 8:12like little rat like taxidermies that are doing like weird things.
- 8:17- It's like, it's like, you're gonna be like, is that encrypted?
- 8:19- It were like little mouse doing house chores.
- 8:23Like the little thing, like--
- 8:25- He's got like a little hat and cane.
- 8:27- Yes, it's weird.
- 8:29We're unpacking exactly where these cryptid stories are coming from.
- 8:34And I think that they used to really travel through
- 8:39almost like ghost stories around a campfire,
- 8:41but with the internet and popular media
- 8:44really bringing these into the zeitgeist
- 8:47and popular culture.
- 8:48We talked a little bit about the Moth Band prophecy.
- 8:51We sell a lot of different cryptids
- 8:53within our childhood cartoons, like a Scooby Doo.
- 8:57- Oh yeah. - We also had the Loch Ness Monster
- 9:01in Assassin's Creed.
- 9:02We had the Moth Man in Fallout 76.
- 9:05We also had the Loch Ness Monster in Twilight, Nessie.
- 9:10(laughing)
- 9:12- Ronesme.
- 9:13- You didn't much daughter after the Loch Ness Monster.
- 9:16- It's my favorite version of Nessie right there.
- 9:18That one was the most scary looking too.
- 9:20- But ultimately it has evolved past just movies and TV, right?
- 9:27So we actually see the internet has fully embraced.
- 9:32One we know and have talked about a little bit here.
- 9:35We have the Moth Man who is basically Tumblr's cryptid boyfriend.
- 9:40Did you ever see these back in the Tumblr days?
- 9:42- Oh yeah, like he's kind of doable.
- 9:46- Yeah.
- 9:47- He's really a sexy Moth Man.
- 9:48- Yeah, sexy Moth Man.
- 9:51Look at Tumblr, fan art.
- 9:54You will not be disappointed.
- 9:56But you can, like he's reimagined as the shy, awkward
- 10:00and dateable character, which is so funny.
- 10:03- He's shy guy.
- 10:05He's got glowing eyeballs.
- 10:08- He just took a real boy.
- 10:09- And ultimately it's perfect meme material, right?
- 10:15And so we've seen a lot of these as we get AI better
- 10:19as well.
- 10:20We've started to see these popups.
- 10:23I guess before even AI, like Photoshop,
- 10:26do you remember the Fresno Nightcrawlers?
- 10:29- No, what's that?
- 10:31- They were, they were basically just a weird walking
- 10:37pair of pants.
- 10:38Founded in Fresno.
- 10:41Oh my God, it's like the SpongeBob episode
- 10:43where his pants get up and walk away.
- 10:45- Yes, exactly.
- 10:47And so it becomes a little bit of tricking the mind
- 10:51and they're online, they're weird and they're mysterious.
- 10:54I almost feel like cryptids are the perfect character
- 10:57for that eerie TikTok music where it's like a little bit,
- 11:01like spooky and put any score over anything you're saying
- 11:06and it just seems like it's actually the scariest thing
- 11:09in the world.
- 11:10- I think that cryptids kind of paved the way
- 11:12for creepypasta too on the internet.
- 11:15So kind of that a forechan, like monsters,
- 11:21that people would make up like cylinder man
- 11:24and then convince everybody that they're real.
- 11:26I mean, essentially those are kind of modern day cryptids, right?
- 11:30Like you can't prove that they're true,
- 11:32but you can't prove that it's not true.
- 11:34It's integrated its way into society somehow.
- 11:39- Yeah, and I guess under the current definition
- 11:42that we're operating under,
- 11:43"Sunderman does not count."
- 11:45But I do think that he really is kind of within that world
- 11:49as well where you really do see that.
- 11:52- Yeah, it's definitely cryptid adjacent
- 11:55and it wouldn't surprise me if like a hundred years
- 11:57from now people were like,
- 11:58"Oh my God, do you think this slender man is real?"
- 12:00And then he kind of becomes his own cryptid.
- 12:02That video game is so scary.
- 12:04So funny.
- 12:07- Yeah, really?
- 12:08- Right?
- 12:09- Something eerie.
- 12:09- Did something where you're really on edge
- 12:13thinking about the existence of them.
- 12:16- You mentioned AI too
- 12:17and I think that's just gonna make it more prevalent.
- 12:20Like there's already this stupid series
- 12:22that my husband watches of like,
- 12:25Bigfoot is in the forest and he's just messing with campers.
- 12:29- Is he on Australian?
- 12:31- I don't remember if he's Australian.
- 12:33I seem to think that they're super like fringe.
- 12:36So I tried and watched it.
- 12:37- They're so dumb.
- 12:38Yeah, it was in the laugh because one of my cut workers
- 12:41was just showing me a video and it's like,
- 12:43I think it's like a, like it's like an ape, not Bigfoot,
- 12:46but he's Australian and he's doing like,
- 12:49random Mr. Beast like videos.
- 12:51- Yeah, that might be him.
- 12:53- He's just like, you know.
- 12:54- I'm gonna go visit this guy's campsite.
- 12:56(laughs)
- 12:57Like, yeah, it's all very right.
- 12:59- Yes, I hate it.
- 13:00- Yeah, and then next thing you know,
- 13:02they're on the all right pipeline.
- 13:04- I write, like, I was just what men see.
- 13:07- So much of the internet,
- 13:08it just gets you right to the all right pipeline man.
- 13:10You're just like, oh, cool.
- 13:12I'm fascist.
- 13:13Sick.
- 13:16I love it.
- 13:17- Cool.
- 13:18- So we're gonna talk about some of the zanious,
- 13:20silliest little cryptids you ever did here of,
- 13:23right after this break.
- 13:25(dramatic music)
- 13:28- So, Chana, I wanna quiz you
- 13:31and I wanna continue this education
- 13:34of lovely, silly, cryptid creatures.
- 13:36- You guys, you're quizzing me.
- 13:37- Try put my notes away.
- 13:38- Okay.
- 13:39- I'm ready.
- 13:40- No, so first we're gonna start with a little education
- 13:43on some of the weirdest cryptids we have ever owned.
- 13:46- We really talked about the Fresno Knight Crawler.
- 13:50So tall, white, pajama pant looking beings caught
- 13:54on granny security cams.
- 13:56Basically the fashion models of the cryptids.
- 13:59We also have the hooels, which are a giant bat ape creature
- 14:04that come from Indonesia and are said to scream,
- 14:08oh, that's it, that's all they do.
- 14:13- That's it, that's all they do.
- 14:14- Yeah.
- 14:15- The Mongolian death worm, who is a desert dwelling worm
- 14:18said to spit acid and electricity,
- 14:21like the metal band of cryptids.
- 14:23That sounds like a Pokemon to me.
- 14:25That's like a dirt electric type Pokemon.
- 14:28- Well, maybe that's where they got it from.
- 14:30(laughing)
- 14:31- And then the brazno dragon, a Russian lake monster.
- 14:35That's basically Nessie's cousin,
- 14:37but with like a little more attitude.
- 14:39- Yeah, a drink spot, yeah.
- 14:41- Rather than a... - Love, you know.
- 14:42- Guinness.
- 14:43(laughing)
- 14:46- We have the Hopkinsville goblins,
- 14:49which are little alien slash gremlin looking creatures.
- 14:53I like how they couldn't decide
- 14:54when they were cryptozoologing.
- 14:56- Yeah.
- 14:57- That terrorized a Kentucky farmhouse in the 1950s.
- 15:02- Just one house.
- 15:03- This guy is one house.
- 15:05- Is one famous for they, I guess,
- 15:06- Yeah. - more than one, a little crew.
- 15:09- Little gay. - Little alien gremlin creatures, you know?
- 15:12(laughing)
- 15:14- And then we have the lizard man,
- 15:16an escape or swamp, which is South Carolina's
- 15:19reptile humanoid blamed for attacking cars.
- 15:23Just didn't like drivers.
- 15:25That's a road rage.
- 15:26- A lot of people do that when you're, you know,
- 15:28like their team wins or loses like a sporting match
- 15:31and they just go and like set cars on fire.
- 15:33Maybe he's just a sports fan.
- 15:35- Yeah, you know, whoever was in South Carolina.
- 15:39- Yeah.
- 15:40- I don't know enough about sports balls.
- 15:42- No.
- 15:43(laughing)
- 15:45- The Carolina Panthers.
- 15:46They're just in both the Carolina.
- 15:47- There you go.
- 15:48- He's a Panthers fan.
- 15:50- Just one of the Carolinas.
- 15:52- One of the Carolinas.
- 15:53- No one comes for us.
- 15:55The infield horror is a three-legged grayish beast
- 15:59with red glowing eyes who has spotted an Illinois
- 16:03in the 70s.
- 16:04Might have just been a guy on acid as in the 70s.
- 16:07- Three-legged.
- 16:09- Maybe he was.
- 16:11Maybe he was a piano.
- 16:13- Oh, well and down.
- 16:14(laughing)
- 16:15- Yeah, that's a good one.
- 16:16- It's a good one.
- 16:17- The next four hands.
- 16:19- The Beast of Bray Road, a Wisconsin werewolf dog man
- 16:23cryptid, some times called America's Werewolf.
- 16:27And then finally the owl man who is the British cousin
- 16:30of Mothman, but he's a little less famous
- 16:33in a little sulkier.
- 16:35He lived in breast.
- 16:37- He's a little more British.
- 16:38- He's a little more British.
- 16:40- I do think it's really interesting
- 16:42when these myths popped up,
- 16:44like where they are on different sides of the world.
- 16:47- Oh yeah.
- 16:48- Where you really go into how do these two different cultures
- 16:53completely separated by oceans, inability to travel
- 16:57to each other.
- 16:58They both have these like folk whores or myths
- 17:00or creatures that they're all seeing.
- 17:02Like you have Bigfoot and the Yeti.
- 17:04You have the Yeti.
- 17:05- The Yeti. - The Howlman and the Mothman.
- 17:08- Of course, as we got into media
- 17:10and where we are today on social media,
- 17:12like a lot of the time it's just like doing it for the bit
- 17:14and trolling and keeping those things going.
- 17:17- Yeah, I like that they're kept going though.
- 17:19It's cool that like, I don't know,
- 17:21cryptids have it survived this long,
- 17:23even if they're not real, just like the folklore
- 17:26and the tale of it.
- 17:27I like it.
- 17:28- Yeah, absolutely, absolutely.
- 17:30And I think that, you know, if you had to pick
- 17:33just one cryptid to hang out with for a day,
- 17:37who are you picking?
- 17:38- I already decided that I'm hanging out with the Howl.
- 17:41To be a whew, 'cause I just wanna scream
- 17:45into the night in Indonesia with a giant bait, a bait.
- 17:49- Yeah, a bait, actually, a bat ape.
- 17:52(laughing)
- 17:53- A bait, a bait.
- 17:55That sounds amazing.
- 17:56Sign me up just to roam the streets in the scream.
- 18:00That's it. - I love it.
- 18:01- I think I'm going to Goblins, you know?
- 18:04Like, whatever you just like got a little mischievous
- 18:06would messed up one Kentucky farmhouse,
- 18:09like in the scale of like chaotic evil.
- 18:13- Yeah. - I think that's pretty,
- 18:15pretty mental, they might be cute.
- 18:16- They could probably be super cute.
- 18:18I think that you and I would have fun hanging
- 18:20with both of those for the night.
- 18:22- Yeah.
- 18:23- Like, that kind of just sounds like us
- 18:24just after night at the club,
- 18:25just screaming and destroying farmhouses, like.
- 18:29- Yeah. - It's just an exciting early time.
- 18:31- Yeah, I was, I was actually talking
- 18:34with my coworker about this,
- 18:35Rose, like, okay, inverse of this question.
- 18:39If you feel like you had to fight a cryptid,
- 18:41who are you picking because you think like you could win?
- 18:45- Oh God, which one's the tiniest?
- 18:47I'm not fighting something huge or scary,
- 18:49like the Jersey Devil or some shit.
- 18:51- Okay.
- 18:52I mean, I feel like a Goblins pretty little.
- 18:55- I think I could like dropkick a Goblin.
- 18:58- So probably the Hopkinsville Goblins.
- 19:00- I think I'm going Fresno Nightcrawler,
- 19:02'cause what do you mean I'm fighting a pair of pants?
- 19:05(laughing)
- 19:06- I do that every day when I get dressed.
- 19:07(laughing)
- 19:09- No, you're right.
- 19:10I would love to fist fight just a sentient pair
- 19:12of pants in the street.
- 19:14- You know, like, what could it do?
- 19:15Like, try to choke me out.
- 19:18- It could strangle you.
- 19:19It could like wrap its fabric legs around you and choke you out.
- 19:22- Yeah, like, you know, maybe I'd get like the strength
- 19:25of like a woman saving her child and just like,
- 19:27rip them. - Yeah.
- 19:29- Like, what are these pants made of?
- 19:30- Do they have teeth?
- 19:32'Cause yeah, like a Goblin could bite me, I guess.
- 19:34And if they're like knee high,
- 19:36I don't want my Goblin taking out my kneecaps.
- 19:39I'm gonna fight the pair of pants with you.
- 19:41- Okay, okay.
- 19:42If they're high waisted, we're screwed.
- 19:44- Yeah, it depends on what size they are,
- 19:47what style they are.
- 19:49If they're a polyester, polarized nightcrawler.
- 19:52- If they're a Levi's, those things are durable.
- 19:56- Yeah, true.
- 19:58- We need a pair of like,
- 19:59pajama pants from Sheen.
- 20:01- Like, they're gonna be,
- 20:02they're gonna be very, very low quality fabric,
- 20:07easily terrible.
- 20:09Yeah.
- 20:11- Attack of the Sheen, pajama pants.
- 20:13- Yeah, you know, they may just fall apart
- 20:16from looking at 'em.
- 20:17- They're probably the washing machine to kill them.
- 20:20- Just a city-grade. - They never really know.
- 20:22- So we think we're winning against the pair of pants.
- 20:26- Absolutely. - Any pants that you're like,
- 20:28I think I could maybe win.
- 20:30'Cause I do have one more.
- 20:31- Oh gosh, let's see here.
- 20:33I'm not gonna beat a worm.
- 20:36- I mean, okay, wait, is the Mongoli and Deathworm worm sized?
- 20:40Or is it like the worms in dude?
- 20:42- I pictured it as like a midden guard worm.
- 20:47- From my avatar, like giant.
- 20:50- So I'm not beating that.
- 20:51'Cause, okay, if it's like a worm,
- 20:53if it's like a worm size worm,
- 20:55then I can beat that.
- 20:56(laughing)
- 20:58But if it's like a tune worm or something,
- 21:01then like a trimmer's worm, no, I'm not beating that.
- 21:05- Yeah, you don't think you're beating a
- 21:08active spinning electric death spinning worm.
- 21:11- Like I said, if it's like three inches long,
- 21:14then yeah, I could take that out.
- 21:15I could take out like a worm.
- 21:18- No, okay. - Step on that thing,
- 21:19throw a book at it.
- 21:21So.
- 21:22- My exploit friends are quaking.
- 21:24(laughing)
- 21:26- I can beat a little tiny three incher.
- 21:29I've been beating those for the last 20 years.
- 21:32(laughing)
- 21:33- I like how you immediately were like,
- 21:35yeah, it's a small worm that people were making of.
- 21:39- I don't know the facts here.
- 21:42- Yeah. - All it says in my notes is worm.
- 21:44It doesn't say giant or.
- 21:47- Got it, got it.
- 21:49Cryptozoologist, listen up.
- 21:52- If it's worm size, then I'm beating the Mongolian Deathworm.
- 21:55If it's crazy size, then it's beating me.
- 21:59- I think that's fair.
- 22:00- I think that's fair.
- 22:01- Okay.
- 22:02- And this may be a little bit like hubris of me,
- 22:06but I think that I could beat Bigfoot.
- 22:09Like Bigfoot just seems a little big dumb, you know?
- 22:13- Yeah, but he's probably got that like dummy strength
- 22:15like of my sin men where he accidentally like snaps
- 22:19the girl's neck.
- 22:20- Just keep looking at the flowers, Lenny.
- 22:25That's what he's big and dumb and like it'll break your neck.
- 22:30- I'd love that you went of my sin men
- 22:32of all of those things.
- 22:34See, I just feel like I could outsmart the Bigfoot
- 22:39and somehow win, but you're right.
- 22:41And probably is like that like chimp strength almost.
- 22:46- Yeah. - So rip your face off, man.
- 22:48- Didn't you watch that one woman?
- 22:50- Or that actual real life woman from Oprah.
- 22:54- Yeah, the chimp, chimp crazy, that lady.
- 22:59- Oh, I didn't watch that.
- 23:00I just remember a lady from Oprah back in the day
- 23:02and she didn't have a face because it chipped.
- 23:03- Dorada, what are she doing?
- 23:06- Probably not well.
- 23:08- If you're listening, chimp faceless, chimp attack lady.
- 23:12Hope you're doing well.
- 23:13Hope you're well.
- 23:15Hope you're well. - Hope you're well.
- 23:16- Hope you're well. - Hope you're well.
- 23:17- And to Bigfoot.
- 23:18- I didn't know. - I didn't know.
- 23:20- Chimp's.
- 23:21- Yeah, okay.
- 23:22Okay.
- 23:23- Yeah.
- 23:24- But you're probably right.
- 23:25And I should stay away from any sort of Bigfoot.
- 23:29- Yeah, please don't fight Bigfoot.
- 23:30I'm pretty fond of you.
- 23:32- Yeah.
- 23:33- And aside from fighting Bigfoot,
- 23:35we wanted to talk about our personal favorites.
- 23:38And we're gonna do that right after the break.
- 23:40(dramatic music)
- 23:43So, Shana, tell our listeners about your favorite cryptids.
- 23:50- So one of my favorite cryptids
- 23:52is the Chupa Cabra, aka the goat sucker.
- 23:56The Chupa Cabra was first reported in Puerto Rico in 1995.
- 24:02I didn't realize that it was that recent.
- 24:04After a wave of livestock deaths
- 24:06where goats were drained of blood through puncture wounds,
- 24:10the term Chupa Cabra comes from Spanish chupar
- 24:13to suck and Cabra goat.
- 24:16So literally sucking off goats.
- 24:19- I mean, not sucking off goats,
- 24:20but sucking goats. - Yes, sucking goats.
- 24:22- Well, kinda reminds me of Morning Glory milking farm.
- 24:25- We're bringing it back.
- 24:27- We're bringing it back every episode as Dev won mention.
- 24:31So, early reports of the Chupa Cabra
- 24:34are that it's reptilian, greenish skin
- 24:37with spines down its back and glowing red eyes.
- 24:41Later reports kinda describe it more as like a hairless dog
- 24:45like creature, which is kinda how I see it in my head
- 24:49as kind of like a combination scaly, skinny dog
- 24:53with like glowing eyes.
- 24:55In pop culture, it has appeared in the X files
- 24:58in the episode El Mundo Grilla in Scooby-Doo
- 25:02and the monsters at Mexico in South Park
- 25:05and in a ton of documentaries.
- 25:07So it is one of the most globalized modern reptids.
- 25:11- I remember the X files episode
- 25:13and that thing free to me out.
- 25:16- Did it?
- 25:17- I didn't see that episode.
- 25:19Did it look kind of like a dog creature thing?
- 25:21- Yeah, it looked dog reptilian like thing.
- 25:25But yeah, I remember living in Texas
- 25:27and being like, "Maxicos on the border, they're coming."
- 25:31I think that's it.
- 25:31Yeah, an Arizona too.
- 25:33Like with the Jackalope, you hear about the Chupa Cabra
- 25:36and another one that I'll mention here next
- 25:38after yours, but another one that I will hear about in Arizona.
- 25:42So I love the Chupa Cabra.
- 25:44I think that it would make a good pet if you could like tame it.
- 25:47Like do your like bidding and like scare your enemies.
- 25:51- You'd have to lose a few goats, but you know.
- 25:54- Yeah, what's a few goat sacrifices
- 25:57to your modern day, which let's go.
- 26:00- To old Chupy, you know?
- 26:03So my favorite one and if you've never heard of this one,
- 26:06I would highly recommend that you Google the art work
- 26:10of this is the Loveland, Ohio Frogman.
- 26:14- Just do you love them.
- 26:15- I've never heard of Ohio.
- 26:16- So I'm very excited.
- 26:18- Yeah, just Google Loveland, Ohio.
- 26:21- I love the Ohio scary people are there, man.
- 26:24- The city of Rockland, Ohio.
- 26:25- So it first became known in 1955
- 26:31when a businessman claimed to see three frog like men
- 26:36under a bridge in Loveland, Ohio.
- 26:40Another sighting in 1972 came from a police officer
- 26:45who said he saw a creature with leathery skin
- 26:48and a frog's face.
- 26:51- My brothers and Christ, these are just people on drugs.
- 26:54- This is why we need body cams on everyone.
- 26:58I know it was the 70s, but they didn't exist yet,
- 27:01but you know, we could have proved.
- 27:03- We could have seen the frog man.
- 27:06- Yeah, and so they are described as three to four feet tall.
- 27:11- Frog of like, yeah, I don't know, big frog.
- 27:15- Big frog.
- 27:16- Or a tiny man.
- 27:19- Yeah.
- 27:20Frog like humanoid leathery skin in some accounts,
- 27:24it held a wand or spark emitting stick.
- 27:28- They just saw ugly children with sparklers, honestly.
- 27:33- These are just ugly, a leathery children
- 27:35on the 4th of July with sparklers.
- 27:36They're like frog-like tall.
- 27:38- Yeah, it has to be it.
- 27:40- So pop culture references really, I mean, it is local
- 27:45legend in Ohio.
- 27:47It has inspired short films, t-shirts,
- 27:52and even a musical hot damn.
- 27:54It's the lovelin frog.
- 27:56- Oh my god.
- 27:57- And it's internet culture, like internet culture loves it
- 28:00because it's so weird.
- 28:01It's so regionally specific and it's only in one part
- 28:05of Ohio.
- 28:06- I love that.
- 28:07- Most of these are like spread out.
- 28:10- They're in regions, country is good.
- 28:12- But you know, they just got weird frog people in lovelins.
- 28:16- Check it out.
- 28:17- Ugly children in lovelin don't fire.
- 28:19(laughing)
- 28:20- Sorry to any listeners, really lovelins.
- 28:23- My next favorite, cryptid.
- 28:26So technically folklore, but she's often treated
- 28:29as a cryptid/ghost figure.
- 28:31Is La Yorona, have you ever heard of her before?
- 28:35- Yeah, I've seen the movie too.
- 28:37- Oh, I haven't seen the movie.
- 28:38The Weeping Woman, my sister-in-law, Alessa,
- 28:42told me that her Nana and thought that like
- 28:44an Andrew's family used to tell them about La Yorona
- 28:48when they were little to keep them in line.
- 28:50So the legend originates in Mexico,
- 28:54trace back to colonial era stories,
- 28:56mixing indigenous and Spanish influences.
- 28:59So it's a pretty basic tale.
- 29:01A woman drowns her children,
- 29:03often after the betrayal of a lover,
- 29:06and then wanders weeping, searching for them.
- 29:09She said to snatch children who wander at night.
- 29:13So it was kind of like a cautionary tale
- 29:16for children if you stay out past
- 29:17after the lights go off, then La Yorona is gonna
- 29:21wear a mi hijos.
- 29:23- Come murder you.
- 29:24- He's a hija. - But she did her babies.
- 29:26- Yes, she's described as a pale ghostly woman
- 29:29in white wailing or crying near rivers and lakes.
- 29:33So some pop culture references.
- 29:35She's a central figure in Latin American folklore.
- 29:38She's featured in the curse of La Yorona,
- 29:40which is part of the contouring universe.
- 29:42I didn't know that. - Yes, that was a movie.
- 29:44I was talking about. - Good movie.
- 29:46Yeah, it's a decent horror movie.
- 29:50- Maybe I'll give that a whirl.
- 29:52She's referenced in Coco from 2017
- 29:55through the song La Yorona,
- 29:56and appears in countless regional ghost stories
- 29:59and TV episodes.
- 30:02- This is a really interesting one.
- 30:04I think as well, I mentioned you see these through lines
- 30:07of characters throughout different regions, times, folklore.
- 30:12This is the Spanish version of a banshee.
- 30:18- Yeah, exactly.
- 30:20- Yes, and so shrieking woman.
- 30:22Is it, this one specifically is very interesting
- 30:27because it is a woman in grief almost.
- 30:32The banshee, I can't remember if it is
- 30:34that she kills her children.
- 30:36- I don't remember either.
- 30:37All I know about her is that she shrieks,
- 30:38which you know another person
- 30:40that I, another like,
- 30:41cryptic that I could hang out with,
- 30:42just a shrieking wailing woman.
- 30:45Get us with the ahul and we are having a good time.
- 30:48- We're just ahul and to get us out of here.
- 30:50- We're just ahul and we see ahul and to the night.
- 30:55- Yeah, so I do think this one is a lot more,
- 30:59like a woman who cries and is evil, right?
- 31:04- Yeah, and definitely like something that parents
- 31:09tell their kids to kind of keep them in line.
- 31:11We're a lot of the other cryptids are just kind of like
- 31:14stories that are kind of told around campfire.
- 31:16So this one's more like,
- 31:17you better come home or La Yodona's gonna snatch you up.
- 31:20So I still like to counter.
- 31:24- Yes, and one of my actual,
- 31:27we talked about it a little bit.
- 31:28So I'm going to the Appalachian Mountains
- 31:31and if you have ever ended up on Appalachia TikTok,
- 31:36it is what's up. - I can't say that we have.
- 31:39- Oh, it's so good.
- 31:40Don't watch it at night.
- 31:41It is very, very creepy.
- 31:43And in the Appalachian Mountains,
- 31:46that it is known that you have two,
- 31:50I guess three rules never respond to a whistle
- 31:54that you hear with a whistle.
- 31:55- Oh, okay.
- 31:56If you hear someone call your name, no, you didn't.
- 31:59Don't acknowledge it.
- 32:00- What if you're out with a friend and you get separated?
- 32:03- You're gonna die.
- 32:05(laughing)
- 32:06- And the third is if you hear,
- 32:09like this one's fucked up,
- 32:10but if you hear a child crying,
- 32:13don't run towards it.
- 32:15- Oh, I would never do that anyway.
- 32:17(laughing)
- 32:18- They have these myths to protect people
- 32:20from what we call today skin walkers.
- 32:24And so skin walkers are from Navajo legend.
- 32:29And they are technically like a witch more so than like a cryptid,
- 32:34but a lot of people think of skin walkers as cryptid.
- 32:39So we're snaking them in.
- 32:40And it is rooted in Navajo traditions.
- 32:44It is a term that describes a type of harmful witch
- 32:48you can shape shift into animals.
- 32:50- Ooh.
- 32:51- This is considered sacred and taboo.
- 32:55Navajo people are often very reluctant
- 32:58to discuss this tradition within it.
- 33:01It has started to move into pop culture.
- 33:05We've seen it.
- 33:06Non-nate aboutances have really picked it up through UFOs,
- 33:09conspiracies, and it is these creatures
- 33:14that can take the form of individuals.
- 33:17It's different than like a mimic
- 33:19who can become another person.
- 33:21- So in the Marvel universe,
- 33:23there's these like aliens called the scrolls
- 33:25and they can shape shift to look like humans
- 33:27and look like other people.
- 33:29And we find out that one of our characters
- 33:31that we've known for like dozens of movies
- 33:34is actually been a scroll the whole time.
- 33:36I bet you anything that's where they got it
- 33:38from is just skin walkers.
- 33:40- Yeah, skin walkers and mimics.
- 33:41They're often different.
- 33:44A lot of the time people will put those two together.
- 33:47So mimics are copies of you or other people
- 33:51and they can exist to do dark things
- 33:56and steal your soul and all of those things.
- 33:58- Cool.
- 33:59- Same thing with skin walkers.
- 34:01That is ultimately where the lore
- 34:04and oral tradition comes from.
- 34:07But a lot of the time in the folklore of them,
- 34:11they take on deer quite a bit.
- 34:13- Ooh, yeah.
- 34:14- And as well and you know are said to have a weird eerie feeling
- 34:18when you hear them.
- 34:20And one thing about skin walkers,
- 34:22I told that Appalachian Trail where it's like,
- 34:25if you acknowledge it, it becomes more intense
- 34:28and it follows me.
- 34:29- Weird.
- 34:30- Trying to capture you.
- 34:31- It's like you're inviting it in.
- 34:33- Yes.
- 34:33And so definitely if you want a little spooky scary vibes,
- 34:38look up skin walkers on TikTok.
- 34:41I'm sure Instagram has them as well.
- 34:43But very, very creepy stories of people have always lived
- 34:46in that Appalachia Trail and weird things have happened.
- 34:49It is also said that like a skin walker could copy your dog
- 34:53and use it to get into your house and things like that.
- 34:57- Oh, no.
- 34:58- And so it is really just kind of these spooky things
- 35:01that are seen haunting in the woods.
- 35:04So pop culture references where we've seen skin walkers,
- 35:08ex files of course in the episode shapes.
- 35:11We've seen them in the show,
- 35:14well we've seen them kind of talked about in skin walker ranch,
- 35:17which is a history channel show.
- 35:20They're kind of exploring like,
- 35:21do skin walkers exist?
- 35:22- I've heard that before.
- 35:23- Oh my God, I never realized what it was about.
- 35:26- It's like serious, they're trying to prove either
- 35:29that aliens are there, that you know, like skin walkers exist.
- 35:33Like they're kind of just investigating it
- 35:35from a scientific point of view.
- 35:37But Philippe, they would always watch it.
- 35:39And literally, it is some of the funniest stuff ever
- 35:43because they're trying to make it very dramatic,
- 35:45but it's literally a science experiment.
- 35:47So like how do you do that?
- 35:48- Yeah.
- 35:49- But really where I first heard about skin walkers
- 35:54was actually in true blood.
- 35:56I don't know if you ever watched true blood.
- 35:58- I watched the first season
- 35:59and I couldn't really get into it.
- 36:02- Yeah, well they have shifters within it
- 36:05where people can turn into animals of any animal
- 36:08that they see, but a skin walker in true blood
- 36:12is actually someone who can take the form
- 36:14of another human.
- 36:16- Okay.
- 36:17- So skin shifting.
- 36:19- Yeah, yeah, ultimately.
- 36:20And so we've seen it a lot.
- 36:22I mean, these traditions have lasted forever.
- 36:27I mean, you know, in Navajo oral traditions,
- 36:29things were written down, but it has really been,
- 36:32you know, some of the earliest folklore
- 36:35that we had in the Americas.
- 36:38Because of Native Americans.
- 36:39So, and that's why you always need a secret word
- 36:42with your best friends.
- 36:43So you can make sure they're not a skin walker.
- 36:46- So you need your safe word, your skin walker safe word.
- 36:49- You and I need to think of one,
- 36:50but we probably shouldn't do it, you know,
- 36:51on the podcast where the skin walkers are listening.
- 36:54- Where they can hear us, they can hear us.
- 36:55- When I go there in a few days,
- 36:57I'm gonna make all of our friends have the same word.
- 36:59- I think that's fair.
- 37:00- Yeah, but we already mentioned this one
- 37:02so I won't take too much time on it,
- 37:04but another popular cryptid is of course the Moth Man.
- 37:07First sighted in 1966 in Point Pleasant, West Virginia
- 37:11when two couples reported seeing age giant,
- 37:15flying man with glowing red eyes,
- 37:17lots of glowing red eyes and cryptids.
- 37:20Sightings continued until 1967
- 37:22when the silver bridge collapsed,
- 37:24killing 46 people, locals tied the disaster to the Moth Man
- 37:29as a warning or an omen.
- 37:32So the Moth Man is about six to seven feet tall,
- 37:35wings that are 10 feet wide and often said
- 37:38to fly without flapping its wings.
- 37:41So our guy just hovers and of course like you mentioned earlier,
- 37:44he's kind of the internet's cryptid boyfriend.
- 37:46So he didn't mean to kill all those people,
- 37:48he's just a shy guy.
- 37:50We saw him in the Moth Man Prophecy's book, 1975,
- 37:54and the film of 2002, the Moth Man Festival in Point Pleasant
- 37:59and frequent internet cryptid memes.
- 38:03He also appears in Fallout 76, the video game.
- 38:07So the Moth Man.
- 38:10- Yeah, the Moth Man is like somehow weirdly
- 38:13a pathetic character too,
- 38:15where he really kind of is not just like this giant bug,
- 38:19but he also is a warning human.
- 38:23So he's a really good guy, you know?
- 38:25- Yeah, you see him and you're like,
- 38:27"Aw, some shit's about to go down.
- 38:29Scary thing is about to happen.
- 38:31My internet boyfriend is here."
- 38:33- And you know, we couldn't end this episode
- 38:35without talking about the one, the only Renesme.
- 38:39No, I'm just kidding, we're gonna talk a little bit
- 38:41about the Loch Ness Monster.
- 38:43Also known as Nessie.
- 38:45- Nessie. - Nessie.
- 38:47- Nessie.
- 38:48- Are we trying to do a Scottish accent?
- 38:50- Yes.
- 38:51- It's not. - Yesie.
- 38:52- Nessie. - Nessie.
- 38:55- It's just real.
- 38:56- We've got a snow place out here.
- 38:57- No, that's terrible. - No, that's terrible.
- 39:00Don't worry, we are not quitting our day jobs.
- 39:02And we're just sticking with our normal voices here.
- 39:05But the first written reference of the Loch Ness Monster
- 39:09goes back to 565 AD in the life of Saint Columbus.
- 39:14And we're the saint supposedly drove away a water beast.
- 39:20Modern fam really came back within 1933
- 39:24when a couple reported saying an enormous animal
- 39:27crossing the road into the Loch.
- 39:30I love that Nessie has evolved
- 39:34and she's now both able to walk on land.
- 39:37She's a girl, of course.
- 39:39- Oh, of course she's young.
- 39:40- And live in a lake.
- 39:42- And I feel like she's gentle and kind.
- 39:44- Yeah, yeah, she's just young.
- 39:47She just wants to be in her lake.
- 39:48- Maybe she'll occasionally walk her house on road.
- 39:53- Really in 1933 it came back up, but in 1934,
- 39:58the surgeon's photograph, which was later revealed
- 40:01as a hoax, really cemented Nessie with in-pop culture.
- 40:06- Yeah, it's like that famous grainy one of her
- 40:09in the lake in the distance.
- 40:10- Yeah, yeah.
- 40:11- It's just like a little kid's like play dinosaur
- 40:16just sticking out.
- 40:17- It looks pretty realistic.
- 40:18Listen, if that's in the 1930s, you're like,
- 40:21that is absolutely believing.
- 40:24- Absolutely.
- 40:24- That is the AI of the 1930s.
- 40:27- There you go, totally.
- 40:28- That's tricking some boomers.
- 40:30- Yeah, it's described as a long neck humped back
- 40:35often compared to a plus a star
- 40:38and size ranged from 20 to 40 feet.
- 40:41So there may even be multiple Nessies, you'd ever know.
- 40:45But we've seen it all over.
- 40:46It's in Scooby Doo, it's in the Simpsons,
- 40:49it's in South Park, it's even in Pokemon.
- 40:52- Lapras.
- 40:53- Lapras, yep, is loosely inspired by Nessie.
- 40:56And honestly, Scotland thrives from this myth
- 41:01and cryptid, just like, you know,
- 41:03Pony Up Towns in Loveland, Ohio.
- 41:06- That is so cool.
- 41:07Like tourist culture there.
- 41:09I'm sure they sell so many t-shirts that say,
- 41:12like, I saw the Loch Ness monster in such and such town
- 41:17or whatever, is the town, Loch Ness,
- 41:19the name of the town, or is it just the lake, I don't know.
- 41:22- I think it's in the lake.
- 41:24And even recently, I mean, this is a meme,
- 41:27I haven't actually researched this,
- 41:29but El Chappos daughter reportedly has taken up the hunt
- 41:34to find Nessie and crew, but they exist.
- 41:37- Why not?
- 41:38You know, I love it.
- 41:40- Someone's got to do it.
- 41:41- Finally doing some good.
- 41:42- And that's what's gotta do.
- 41:43- Someone's got to do it.
- 41:44- I can get behind.
- 41:45She can go on our nepo baby rescue mobiles.
- 41:47- Yeah, exactly.
- 41:49- Exactly.
- 41:51- And, you know, we by no means have covered
- 41:53all the cryptids out there.
- 41:55And if you feel like we missed some of the funniest cryptids
- 41:59or some of the scariest cryptids,

- 42:18- She went to a five o'clock shadow on her Moth Man.
- 42:20So if you guys come to make that happen.
- 42:22- I want to make that happen.
- 42:23- Ooh, Moth Man abs.
- 42:25- Okay, but could you really look past like a little furry body?
- 42:30I guess it's kind of like if you were like picturing
- 42:33one of the bat boys, but just furry.
- 42:35But it would have a Moth head.
- 42:37- My picture is body is kind of like smooth fur
- 42:40and then he has like the furry ruffle collar thing
- 42:42around his neck.
- 42:43But then yeah, definitely Moth head.
- 42:46But he's kind of like just man from neck down
- 42:49but just kind of covered in like Moth fur.
- 42:51- Okay, okay.
- 42:54- So slightly hairy, okay.
- 42:56- All right, make that happen.
- 42:57- And listeners there.
- 42:58- And maybe as coins in his ass crack,
- 43:00like in the statue, everyone puts like coins.
- 43:03Coins in the Moth Man statues but crack.
- 43:05So maybe he's gonna be sexy and have little money
- 43:08in his bum.
- 43:09- Ooh, 41 from a man.
- 43:12- It's hard to ask for more.
- 43:15You know, the Moth Man will deliver.
- 43:17He's also prophetic.
- 43:18He's thinking ahead.
- 43:19He's thinking ahead.
- 43:20He's a little. - He's thinking ahead.
- 43:21- He's emo, he can fly, he's got butt cheek money.
- 43:25- I'm so out of following.
