Latest / Bleacher Report / Pedro Martinez In Awe Of Drew Rasumussen Following Near No-Hitter
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Tonight, what a performance. This is the closer on TBS
- 0:03Speaker 1: presented by Genesis Motor America. Adam Lefkoe, Jimmy Rollins, Curtis Granderson,
- 0:09Speaker 1: Pedro Martinez. What did we just witness? Greatness.
- 0:14Speaker 2: Greatness. And one that really, really impressed me. I mean,
- 0:19Speaker 2: I've seen great games, but for this young man to
- 0:23Speaker 2: do what he did against the Yankees today, first of all,
- 0:26Speaker 2: I thought he was great in the clincher in New York.
- 0:29Speaker 2: He did great. But my God, this performance really, really
- 0:35Speaker 2: caught my attention. I really enjoyed everything he did. The
- 0:39Speaker 2: way he located the fastball, the curveball, the slider, cutter, changeup.
- 0:45Speaker 2: I mean, he was literally perfect.
- 0:49Speaker 3: Perfect.
- 0:50Speaker 2: I did not see a pitch that wasn't purposely placed
- 0:54Speaker 2: where it was. And I think the catcher did it.
- 0:58Speaker 2: a great job at keeping his pace, keeping him moving
- 1:01Speaker 2: the ball all around. I did not see a mislocation.
- 1:05Speaker 2: That is really impressive. I'm really impressed with this young man.
- 1:09Speaker 1: And that's what makes it our play of the night
- 1:11Speaker 1: presented by Genesis Motor America. This performance by Rasmussen was special.
- 1:16Speaker 1: You mentioned that performance just a week or two ago.
- 1:18Speaker 1: He took a no-hitter into the seventh against the Yankees.
- 1:21Speaker 1: That means in his last 14 and two-thirds against the Yanks, Curtis,
- 1:25Speaker 1: just two hits... 21 strikeouts, nearly perfect pace.
- 1:29Speaker 3: And I think what's also impressive, he does it in
- 1:31Speaker 3: Yankee Stadium. He comes back home, and as you heard
- 1:34Speaker 3: him talking to Lauren, he was nervous. Here's a playoff
- 1:37Speaker 3: game in front of this atmosphere and this crowd that
- 1:39Speaker 3: he hasn't had all season long. How is he going
- 1:41Speaker 3: to deliver? How is he going to stand up? And
- 1:43Speaker 3: you saw what the Yankees did the previous matchup against
- 1:47Speaker 3: the Red Sox. Is that the offense you're going to see?
- 1:50Speaker 3: But as you can see right here, back on September
- 1:52Speaker 3: 22nd and here tonight for Game 1, He was as
- 1:55Speaker 3: cool and as calm. It didn't matter who was up
- 1:58Speaker 3: there against him. He stayed in control and kept the
- 2:00Speaker 3: Yankees hitters off balance all night.
- 2:02Speaker 1: Jimmy, manager Cash was asked in the last week, who
- 2:06Speaker 1: would be your comparison for Rasmussen? He said Roy Halladay.
- 2:10Speaker 1: That was the last time we had a no-hitter in
- 2:13Speaker 1: the postseason back in 2010. We saw that level this evening.
- 2:17Speaker 4: We definitely did. And when you're playing behind a guy
- 2:19Speaker 4: like that, you can tell from the first pitch of
- 2:21Speaker 4: the game that he has it. Referencing Roy. The first
- 2:25Speaker 4: pitch of the game, I looked over at Chase and
- 2:26Speaker 4: I said, they have no chance. I didn't think they had,
- 2:29Speaker 4: I wasn't thinking no hit, but I'm like, they have
- 2:31Speaker 4: no chance. There's nothing they're going to do with this
- 2:33Speaker 4: guy tonight. And the last few times he's faced the Yankees,
- 2:35Speaker 4: if you're an infielder, middle infielder, you're looking at each
- 2:37Speaker 4: other like, bro, our job is easy because he's going
- 2:40Speaker 4: to dominate. You can see how the ball is coming
- 2:42Speaker 4: out of his hand. You see where the catch is
- 2:44Speaker 4: setting up. You see the swing and misses. You can
- 2:47Speaker 4: see the hitters guessing and them not being on the
- 2:50Speaker 4: right page. Everything he threw tonight, as Pedro said, was
- 2:53Speaker 4: with intention. And if he missed, he missed, missed. It
- 2:56Speaker 4: wasn't a miss for a mistake where they can bop one.
- 2:59Speaker 4: He missed and he made the adjustment. Great job between
- 3:02Speaker 4: the battery mace tonight. And when you're locked in like
- 3:04Speaker 4: this as a pitcher, as a hitter, we know that.
- 3:08Speaker 4: We hope that this is the only time we're going
- 3:09Speaker 4: to see you. If this series goes on, they'll get
- 3:11Speaker 4: him again. But they have no chance. They didn't have
- 3:13Speaker 4: a chance in September. They didn't have a chance in October.
- 3:16Speaker 4: Hats off to that young man.
- 3:18Speaker 1: What a story as well. Lauren brought up the three
- 3:20Speaker 1: arm surgeries he had also this year in April. They
- 3:24Speaker 1: had a daughter that had complications that had him in
- 3:26Speaker 1: the hospital for 10 days. Through all of that, he
- 3:30Speaker 1: battled through. He said, this has been my best year
- 3:32Speaker 1: on the field, but it's probably been one of the
- 3:33Speaker 1: hardest years of my life personally. Battling all of that
- 3:37Speaker 1: and to perform at this level is astounding.
- 3:39Speaker 2: Well, a lot of people don't really know how much
- 3:45Speaker 2: we go through during the season. It's hard to explain,
- 3:50Speaker 2: but you can't show anybody any emotions out there. And
- 3:55Speaker 2: it's really difficult, especially when it comes to the health
- 3:58Speaker 2: of your family or yourself. It's really difficult to deal with,
- 4:02Speaker 2: but it's something that we know happens. Between the three
- 4:06Speaker 2: of us, we know those things happen. Kudos to him
- 4:10Speaker 2: to be able to block everything away and still have
- 4:13Speaker 2: an outstanding season and come to the postseason and continue
- 4:18Speaker 2: to do what he's able to do. I'm really impressed
- 4:20Speaker 2: with this young man. And we have to also acknowledge
- 4:25Speaker 2: Garrett called through the ball really well. Yes, he did.
- 4:28Speaker 2: But how do you win ball games in the postseason?
- 4:32Speaker 2: Pitching and defense. And his teammates backed him up the
- 4:37Speaker 2: entire night.
- 4:38Speaker 1: The last time the Yankees lost a postseason game 1-0, 1963,
- 4:44Speaker 1: against the Los Angeles Dodgers in Game 3 of the
- 4:47Speaker 1: World Series. Here's Aaron Boone.
