- 1:04Speaker 4: Very Hi and welcome back to Who and What Now
- 1:19Speaker 4: the history of podcast that is not your history class
- 1:22Speaker 4: with me, your terrible host Katie Charlewood, vacant podcaster and
- 1:28Speaker 4: reader of books.
- 1:29Speaker 1: So I've been away for a while, as many of
- 1:33Speaker 1: you know, have you missed me? I missed you. Oh seriously,
- 1:38Speaker 1: it's been It's been interesting. You see. I'm still in
- 1:42Speaker 1: the middle of renovations and unfortunately I lost my voice
- 1:46Speaker 1: three times in four months, which honestly zero out of
- 1:51Speaker 1: ten would not recommend. It was it wasn't It was
- 1:54Speaker 1: really tough, and I had recorded an episode, but my
- 1:59Speaker 1: voice is awful. I'll probably still release it once I
- 2:02Speaker 1: get around to editing it. But even I'm listening to
- 2:05Speaker 1: it going ah, I know, it's almost as bad as
- 2:09Speaker 1: the Shark Arm Murder, where I'm just speaking so fast
- 2:13Speaker 1: that even I have trouble understanding what I'm saying. But
- 2:15Speaker 1: I suppose I should give you a be life update.
- 2:18Speaker 1: I am still working, I'm still doing renovations. I am
- 2:24Speaker 1: fully vaccinated, whooo. And you know, with restrictions easing and
- 2:30Speaker 1: things like that, I've been visiting places very carefully with
- 2:35Speaker 1: you know, I'm following all the guidelines. I went to Dublin.
- 2:39Speaker 1: I was filming Indie Epic Museum, so that's the Irish
- 2:43Speaker 1: Immigration Museum in Dublin. It's like this interactive museum and
- 2:47Speaker 1: it is fantastic. I really really enjoyed it. I would
- 2:50Speaker 1: absolutely recommend it for anybody who has any interest of
- 2:54Speaker 1: you know, history, Irish history, history regarding immigrants or immigration
- 3:00Speaker 1: or the diaspora, anything along those lines. Fantastic. Would absolutely
- 3:05Speaker 1: suggest everyone go if you're in Dublin. It's just a
- 3:09Speaker 1: really really good time. There's a bit where you there's
- 3:12Speaker 1: even this like I wouldn't say music and culture, but
- 3:16Speaker 1: where they have this bit on the floor to try
- 3:19Speaker 1: and teach you how to Irish dance and I already
- 3:22Speaker 1: have no rhythm. But ah, I sucked. Oh it was
- 3:25Speaker 1: so bad. I did surprisingly well on the pub quiz though,
- 3:29Speaker 1: But I digress. I really hope to go back to
- 3:33Speaker 1: Dublin soon actually, but I think I'm probably gonna visit
- 3:36Speaker 1: Sli Go first and then go for a few places
- 3:39Speaker 1: from there.
- 3:39Speaker 4: Ah.
- 3:41Speaker 1: My personal life is a little bit better. So basically
- 3:46Speaker 1: I came to the conclusion throughout the pandemic that I
- 3:50Speaker 1: was going to take better care of myself and look
- 3:52Speaker 1: after myself and do things treat yourself, you know, like
- 3:56Speaker 1: in parks and rec and you know, yes, I decided
- 3:59Speaker 1: I'm gonna treat myself. So I have actually booked a
- 4:02Speaker 1: ridiculous hotel in Edinburgh for my birthday November. I am
- 4:07Speaker 1: so excited. You have no idea. I am so excited
- 4:11Speaker 1: for this. And I am going to film and stuff
- 4:13Speaker 1: when I'm there because I'm going to utilize the opportunity
- 4:16Speaker 1: while I have it, because you know, I spent so
- 4:19Speaker 1: long not caring for myself, in avoiding things. And I
- 4:25Speaker 1: think my cousins are trying to organize stuff as well,
- 4:27Speaker 1: which is really nice. We're all starting to like reconnect,
- 4:29Speaker 1: which is really nice. Oh and then at turn of events,
- 4:32Speaker 1: I actually deleted my dating apps, my dating apps my phone.
- 4:36Speaker 1: I was like, you know what, I'm content right now
- 4:40Speaker 1: with how things are going. I don't want to be
- 4:44Speaker 1: actively looking for other stuff right now. I think I'm
- 4:48Speaker 1: good the way things are my personal life right now.
- 4:50Speaker 1: And that's all I'm going to say in a subject.
- 4:52Speaker 1: But anyway, I know what you're thinking. You're thinking, quit
- 4:55Speaker 1: your jibber jabber in fact me, In fact you I will.
- 4:58Speaker 1: But first we have to get our source on. So
- 5:02Speaker 1: this week's episode, I decided to go for some modern
- 5:06Speaker 1: history and I thought it's time to talk about a
- 5:09Speaker 1: Sleay's bowl because I want to talk about how Elvis
- 5:13Speaker 1: Presley was human trash. Our sources today are Elvis What
- 5:20Speaker 1: Happened by Steve don Levy, Elvis Presley, A Southern Life
- 5:25Speaker 1: by Joel Williamson, Elvis and Me by Priscilla Presley, and
- 5:30Speaker 1: one of my favorite resources, find a death dot Com. Yes,
- 5:34Speaker 1: I am, in fact a death hag. Let's face it,
- 5:37Speaker 1: You're not surprised, okay. Elvis Presley the absolute gobermouch, So
- 5:43Speaker 1: let's get to it. Elvis Aaron Presley was born on
- 5:46Speaker 1: January eighth, nineteen thirty five, in Tupelo, Mississippi. I feel
- 5:52Speaker 1: like I've pronounced that wrong anyway. To vernon Elvis Presley,
- 5:56Speaker 1: I'm gladys love Presley and like the rest of his life,
- 5:59Speaker 1: this was not smooth sailing. Thirty five minutes before Elvis
- 6:03Speaker 1: came into the world, his identical twin brother, Jesse Garren Presley,
- 6:09Speaker 1: was stillborn. His father was basically of German, Scottish and
- 6:13Speaker 1: English descent. His mother was like Scott's Irish, a bit
- 6:16Speaker 1: of French, and possibly a little bit of Native American,
- 6:22Speaker 1: and like many white Americans, believed that their great great
- 6:25Speaker 1: grandmother was some kind of Cherokee princess his mom. So
- 6:29Speaker 1: Elvis is like really close to his mom, like super
- 6:32Speaker 1: close to his mom. You know those boy moms you
- 6:35Speaker 1: get that are weirdly obsessive and have some sort of Yeah,
- 6:39Speaker 1: that's what Gladys was.
- 6:40Speaker 4: Like.
- 6:41Speaker 1: He was super super close to his mom and she
- 6:44Speaker 1: was a very very dominant personality. Anyway, in nineteen forty eight,
- 6:49Speaker 1: the family moves to Memphis, Tennessee, and Elvis he loved
- 6:53Speaker 1: singing in church. Good for him, But it wasn't until
- 6:56Speaker 1: nineteen fifty four where his music career really takes off.
- 7:00Speaker 1: Elvis gets to quit his job as a truck driver
- 7:03Speaker 1: because he is signed by a record label, and by
- 7:06Speaker 1: nineteen fifty six he is this massive, massive star. See,
- 7:11Speaker 1: things were really lucky for him. He lucked out at
- 7:14Speaker 1: this time period because in the sort of fifties sixties,
- 7:18Speaker 1: this is where the teenager, the concept of the teenager
- 7:22Speaker 1: really comes into fruition. It just like appears so lucky
- 7:25Speaker 1: for him. I'm lucky for you know, fourteen year old
- 7:28Speaker 1: girls everywhere. This becomes his fan base, like Beatlemania. Wherever
- 7:33Speaker 1: Elvis went there was a swarm of teenage girls. So
- 7:39Speaker 1: nineteen fifty six, Heartbreak Hotels comes out. It's his first
- 7:43Speaker 1: number one. He starts starring in movies. You know, everything's
- 7:47Speaker 1: going well for him. He purchases Graceland in Memphis, and
- 7:52Speaker 1: he gets his aids and his bodyguards to bring fourteen
- 7:56Speaker 1: year old girls over to Graceland so that they can
- 7:59Speaker 1: strip down into white underwear and have pillow fights and
- 8:03Speaker 1: tickle flights and wrestle. Sometimes Elvis would even join in
- 8:08Speaker 1: in the wrestling. How disgusting. So when he's twenty two,
- 8:14Speaker 1: he's going on tour. So yeah, Elvis starts going on tour.
- 8:18Speaker 1: And whenever Elvis is on tour, there was a plethora
- 8:21Speaker 1: of teenagers and thirteen year olds he wasn't interested in.
- 8:26Speaker 1: But once they hit fourteen, it was like it was
- 8:28Speaker 1: the magic number or something, and he was like, yay,
- 8:32Speaker 1: this is it just creepy. He didn't like to sleep
- 8:36Speaker 1: alone like ever. He always wanted a girl in his bed,
- 8:41Speaker 1: and he always had his aids bring him like, you know,
- 8:45Speaker 1: like a steady stream of girls and they'll be like
- 8:48Speaker 1: it was a different time. The argument only works if
- 8:52Speaker 1: the majority people in that time period believed it to
- 8:55Speaker 1: be appropriate. And let me assure you they did not,
- 9:00Speaker 1: especially the mothers of these girls. A child is still
- 9:03Speaker 1: a child. So he starts starring in movies and he
- 9:06Speaker 1: becomes a bigger star, and he becomes really controversial because
- 9:09Speaker 1: he's like shaking his hips and he's this weird sex symbol.
- 9:14Speaker 1: So not only is Elvis appropriating moves and music from
- 9:19Speaker 1: you know, the black community and black music, rock and
- 9:23Speaker 1: roll is all stolen from black people, which is you know,
- 9:25Speaker 1: already putting him on a dogy list for some people.
- 9:28Speaker 1: He then his whole appeal. The people who are obsessing
- 9:31Speaker 1: over him are teenage girls, which is like another whole thing.
- 9:35Speaker 1: He's poisoning the minds of the youth, which in most
- 9:39Speaker 1: cases I'll be like, ah, yeah, whatever, But in fairness,
- 9:42Speaker 1: he's a slavable, so I'm not gonna agree with them
- 9:44Speaker 1: in this one. So in nineteen fifty eight, Elvis's mother
- 9:48Speaker 1: dies and Elvis does not take this well. When Gladys's
- 9:53Speaker 1: coffin is being placed into the grave, Elvis does the
- 9:57Speaker 1: extreme mama's boy thing and physically leaps into the grave,
- 10:04Speaker 1: like he jumps in on top of on top of
- 10:07Speaker 1: the coffin, like I don't care who you are. That
- 10:10Speaker 1: is not normal behavior. So he's drafted. He's stationed in
- 10:13Speaker 1: West Germany and he meets the young Priscilla. So she
- 10:18Speaker 1: heard Elvis was there and she wanted to meet him.
- 10:20Speaker 1: So one of other guys was like, I can totally
- 10:22Speaker 1: arrange this for you. And she gets introduced to Elvis
- 10:26Speaker 1: and they start dating, and her parents originally are like,
- 10:30Speaker 1: dear God, no, let's not be having this, you know,
- 10:33Speaker 1: because you know, there's a ten year age difference, there's
- 10:36Speaker 1: a decade in between them, and that's that's a bit
- 10:39Speaker 1: much for them. But eventually, you know, they get to
- 10:43Speaker 1: know Elvis and they're like, he is a kind young gentleman.
- 10:46Speaker 1: And remember Elvis didn't like sleeping alone, so he the
- 10:51Speaker 1: twenty four year old man, had a fourteen year old
- 10:55Speaker 1: child sleeping in his bed beside him. And Elvis was
- 10:59Speaker 1: like super into four play, partially because he had a
- 11:05Speaker 1: weird obsession with the virgins and virginity and motherhood. So
- 11:10Speaker 1: him and Priscilla are daring and they're basically doing everything
- 11:14Speaker 1: but anything but heteronormative penetrative sex, everything, but and she's
- 11:21Speaker 1: begging him to like finally do it, but his weird
- 11:24Speaker 1: obsession with like virginity in motherhood. Like he thinks motherhood
- 11:29Speaker 1: is this sacred, sacred thing, and he could not have
- 11:34Speaker 1: sex with a woman if she had given birth, like
- 11:38Speaker 1: if she was what he believed to be a mother,
- 11:41Speaker 1: he couldn't do it. It was just something that physically
- 11:43Speaker 1: repulsed him to his core. He just couldn't be at that. So, yeah,
- 11:47Speaker 1: Priscilla moves into Gravesland. She gets permission from her parents
- 11:51Speaker 1: to fly over because she's still like seventeen or something,
- 11:54Speaker 1: and then she gets like grounds to be able to stay.
- 11:57Speaker 1: He basically does a sort of adoption thing in order
- 12:00Speaker 1: to keep her with him, but anyway, she ends up
- 12:04Speaker 1: moving into Graceland. So when he finally starts, you know,
- 12:08Speaker 1: sleeping with Priscilla, he would basically pull out and pray.
- 12:12Speaker 1: He believed that not coming inside her kept her a virgin.
- 12:17Speaker 1: Somehow he'd managed to twist it in his head. But
- 12:19Speaker 1: that's how I don't know anyway, So he does that,
- 12:24Speaker 1: he basically and they start taking like drugs and booze,
- 12:29Speaker 1: and he takes photos and he keeps them all in
- 12:31Speaker 1: this silver case and their photos and videos, and he
- 12:34Speaker 1: has these two way mirrors installed in Graceland. So he
- 12:40Speaker 1: can have these wild parties and he can watch people
- 12:42Speaker 1: have sex because he's a fucking creep and without their consent,
- 12:47Speaker 1: I might add, like, if someone's into that, I'm not
- 12:50Speaker 1: here to yuck anybody's yum. But like, if you're into that, fine,
- 12:54Speaker 1: but consent, consent is key, you know what I mean.
- 12:58Speaker 1: So anyway, he brings women into the bedroom so that
- 13:02Speaker 1: they can simulate having sex with Priscilla and he can
- 13:06Speaker 1: film it, photograph it, so on and so forth. So
- 13:09Speaker 1: after a couple of years of them living in Sittin
- 13:12Speaker 1: as it were, his manager is like, you need to
- 13:15Speaker 1: marry her because it will ruin your image if you don't.
- 13:18Speaker 1: He didn't want to get married, obviously, but they do.
- 13:21Speaker 1: They get married. He you know, doesn't pull out in time. Surprise, surprise,
- 13:27Speaker 1: and Priscilla becomes pregnant. So when Priscilla becomes pregnant, he
- 13:32Speaker 1: just can't touch her. He's done. He's not into that
- 13:37Speaker 1: at all. He just stops, like, he just stops. He's
- 13:40Speaker 1: like no again, because he has this weird obsession with
- 13:44Speaker 1: motherhood and that now that she's a mother, she can't
- 13:47Speaker 1: be touched then because he is an absolute Kretin continues
- 13:54Speaker 1: I should say, sleeping with other women, other girls, preferably virgins,
- 14:00Speaker 1: preferably fourteen year olds. And this continues, so he's having affairs,
- 14:05Speaker 1: and he's having affairs for years, and then Priscilla's like, no,
- 14:08Speaker 1: I can't be in this loveless marriage anymore, and she
- 14:13Speaker 1: ends up having affairs of her own. So eventually she
- 14:15Speaker 1: goes to Graceland and she tells him, I'm leaving you
- 14:18Speaker 1: for karate instructor Mike Stone, and Elvis does not like
- 14:24Speaker 1: this information, and Elvis, being an emotionally stunted piece of shit,
- 14:29Speaker 1: then forces himself upon her, telling her this is how
- 14:32Speaker 1: how a real man makes love to a woman. And
- 14:35Speaker 1: then he rapes her. He hits her, and then he
- 14:38Speaker 1: rapes her. But even she, because of the time period,
- 14:42Speaker 1: struggled to see that as an assault. She just said
- 14:44Speaker 1: it was forceful and uncomfortable and unwanted, but that's just
- 14:48Speaker 1: how it was. Elvis even tries at one point to
- 14:51Speaker 1: hire a hitman to kill Mike Stone, but it doesn't work.
- 14:56Speaker 1: So in the seventies, just before like he and Priscilla separate, separate,
- 15:01Speaker 1: he starts seeing Joyce Bova, who is this virgin, and
- 15:05Speaker 1: when she finally does relent to his charms, shall we say,
- 15:10Speaker 1: she realizes he's not. He's really good at warring people,
- 15:13Speaker 1: but like when he actually performs in the bedroom, he's
- 15:17Speaker 1: lackluster at best. So, and this is reported by like
- 15:20Speaker 1: Sybil Shepherd, Beverly Lee, Joyce, Bova, so on and so forth.
- 15:27Speaker 1: So Joyce finds it she's pregnant, but Elvis said if
- 15:31Speaker 1: they were, if she ever had a baby, he would
- 15:32Speaker 1: never touch her again. So she had an abortion and
- 15:35Speaker 1: didn't tell him. So the next woman in his life
- 15:39Speaker 1: was Linda Thompson, Miss Tennessee nineteen seventy two, also a virgin, surprise, surprise,
- 15:46Speaker 1: So basically she ended up becoming the caretaker for Elvis.
- 15:50Speaker 1: She moved into Graceland. She would have to care for him.
- 15:54Speaker 1: She would have to watch over him whenever he took drugs.
- 15:57Speaker 1: Sometimes he'd fall asleep while eating and she would have
- 16:01Speaker 1: to dig food out of his mouth to make sure
- 16:03Speaker 1: he didn't choke to death. So he's like going a
- 16:06Speaker 1: bit nuts. He's constantly eating, he's taking up his boozing,
- 16:11Speaker 1: he's on drugs. He's basically trying to fill a void. Apparently,
- 16:16Speaker 1: no fourteen year old virgin can, and because he's like
- 16:19Speaker 1: constantly spending money, he has to fire three of his bodyguards.
- 16:23Speaker 1: So eventually Miss Tennessee leaves because she can't be dealing
- 16:26Speaker 1: with this, and Elvis sets a sight ights on Miss Tennessee.
- 16:32Speaker 1: Nineteen seventy six Ginger Aldron. So basically, Ginger and our
- 16:37Speaker 1: sister Terry went to meet Elvis and he challenged them
- 16:40Speaker 1: to a wrestle and her big sister Terry won, and
- 16:46Speaker 1: so Elvis got rid of works. He didn't feel very macho,
- 16:50Speaker 1: and he had a thing for Ginger because she was,
- 16:53Speaker 1: you know, because she looked innocent, and he started spending
- 16:59Speaker 1: money when out her family loved bombing her. But Ginger wasn't. Like,
- 17:05Speaker 1: Ginger looked innocent, but she wasn't the wallflower that he
- 17:08Speaker 1: was used to. So she loved going to parties and
- 17:10Speaker 1: bars and clubs and hanging out with six a gas,
- 17:14Speaker 1: And she wasn't. She wasn't just gonna wait at home
- 17:17Speaker 1: and perform for him like a dancing monkey whenever he
- 17:20Speaker 1: fucking wanted, because you know, see how her priorities. So
- 17:25Speaker 1: he decides to be a manipulating bastard and uses his
- 17:29Speaker 1: money and his power to you know, help help her
- 17:33Speaker 1: mom get a divorce and landscape her fucking and like
- 17:39Speaker 1: landscape the house and give her a swimming pool and
- 17:41Speaker 1: all this other stuff. Also in addition, furthermore, and in
- 17:44Speaker 1: a move that surprises absolutely fucking no one, are we
- 17:47Speaker 1: really surprised that Elvis was abusive One time when she
- 17:52Speaker 1: decided she wanted to leave, Elvis got angry at her
- 17:56Speaker 1: and fired a shotgun at her surprise. Surprise, she's diad.
- 18:01Speaker 1: So Elvis is like constantly eating. He's you know, again,
- 18:04Speaker 1: trying to fill this hole. And so he's got this
- 18:07Speaker 1: yogurt addiction of all things, and he's like, bring me
- 18:11Speaker 1: more yogurt, ginger, So she tells him he doesn't need
- 18:14Speaker 1: any more yogurt, and he gets mad and they go
- 18:18Speaker 1: to sleep, and she is awakened by the sound of
- 18:21Speaker 1: a fifty seven magnum pistol being shot because he has
- 18:25Speaker 1: shot the headboard just above her head to quote unquote
- 18:30Speaker 1: get her attention. So on August fifteenth, nineteen seventy seven,
- 18:35Speaker 1: Elvis had friends over at Graceland. He played the piano.
- 18:39Speaker 1: He's been singing until the morning. He goes and plays
- 18:42Speaker 1: some racquet bottle. He was gonna tax codeine and this
- 18:45Speaker 1: other an achoric pain reliever, partly for dental pain and
- 18:49Speaker 1: about half it. In the morning, he goes to the toilet.
- 18:51Speaker 1: I know, the common myth is that Elvis died on
- 18:54Speaker 1: the toilet. No, Elvis didn't die on the toilet. Elvis
- 18:58Speaker 1: died on the floor between the toilet and the bedroom.
- 19:04Speaker 1: So he was actually found on the floor of the
- 19:06Speaker 1: dressing room. So he was basically on his knees, hunched
- 19:09Speaker 1: over with his trousers around his ankles. So he probably
- 19:12Speaker 1: started to die on the toilet but then made it
- 19:16Speaker 1: just about to the dressing room where he collapsed. So basically,
- 19:20Speaker 1: there's vomit everywhere. There's vomit in the adjacent room. There's
- 19:24Speaker 1: vomit on the floor, there's vomit in the shag carpeting,
- 19:28Speaker 1: in the bathroom. It's it's everywhere. So by two pm,
- 19:32Speaker 1: Ginger's leg whereas Ah. She goes and finds him, and
- 19:36Speaker 1: she calls, you know, obviously the hospital come in. They
- 19:38Speaker 1: grab him, they take him to the hospital and he's
- 19:44Speaker 1: he's already been dead for a while, but everyone's panicking
- 19:48Speaker 1: to the point where they're shoving the breathing apparatus down
- 19:51Speaker 1: his throat so hard they break his front teeth, and
- 19:54Speaker 1: Elvis is eventually pronounced dead three point thirty pm on
- 19:59Speaker 1: the sixteenth August nineteen seventy seven. And Elvis came into
- 20:03Speaker 1: the world in drama, and he left the world and
- 20:05Speaker 1: in drama. But he wasn't finished yet because on the
- 20:09Speaker 1: day of his funeral, there was this vigil being held
- 20:12Speaker 1: outside of Graceland and this drunk driver comes careening around
- 20:18Speaker 1: the road hits three teenage girls of the vigil. One
- 20:23Speaker 1: gets thrown in the air, one is dragged under the car,
- 20:26Speaker 1: and one is pinned to the front. Two out of
- 20:29Speaker 1: the three girls die. Thus ends the story of Elvis.
- 20:33Speaker 1: Aaron Presley. So, even though he appropriated black culture by
- 20:38Speaker 1: stealing their music, was physically and emotionally abusive and was
- 20:42Speaker 1: a misogynist and you know, a pedophile, that makes some

- 21:36Speaker 1: sci fi like themes and music and stuff. You can
- 21:38Speaker 1: basically request anything, but it is good fun and I
- 21:41Speaker 1: highly recommend you go listen. But that is everything, and
- 21:44Speaker 1: I'm tired, and I just realized how long this isn't
- 21:48Speaker 1: how much I've got to edit, but I'm going to
- 21:50Speaker 1: bid you all good night. Oh don't forget. If you

- 22:07Speaker 1: the social media's. You can help keep the lights on
- 22:10Speaker 1: by either going to Patreon dot com, slash, who did
- 22:13Speaker 1: what Now pod? Or who did what Now pod? PayPal,
