- 1:02Speaker 3: about her life up in southeast Alaska and a couple
- 1:06Speaker 3: of her new mediater shows. Me Stephen Corey are gonna
- 1:11Speaker 3: gonna lay out some indefensible laws that we're going to defend. Anyway,
- 1:16Speaker 3: We've got some primo hot tip offs out of Wisconsin
- 1:19Speaker 3: and some advice for husbands and fathers during hunting season.
- 1:23Speaker 3: And in the spirit of full disclosure, this is not
- 1:27Speaker 3: actually live. We won't have any live chat feedback. And
- 1:33Speaker 3: the reason for that is because the day we're supposed
- 1:35Speaker 3: to record live, Phil's gonna be out of town nerding
- 1:39Speaker 3: out on video games. Phil, you want to tell everyone
- 1:42Speaker 3: what's so important that you've got to miss a live recording.
- 1:45Speaker 4: Yeah, it sounds like you're making that up, but you're
- 1:47Speaker 4: you're not when you're watching us. Randall and I will
- 1:50Speaker 4: be on a plane on our way to Nashville, Tennessee,
- 1:53Speaker 4: going to Buckfest twenty twenty five. And Buckfest is also
- 1:57Speaker 4: the grounds for the World Championships of Big Buck Hunter,
- 2:01Speaker 4: So Randall and I will be there documenting it, making
- 2:03Speaker 4: some some video content that you guys can look forward
- 2:06Speaker 4: to soon.
- 2:07Speaker 5: But a bunch of no, it's good with that black backdrop,
- 2:09Speaker 5: I know, and go back to that for a minute.
- 2:10Speaker 1: Oh yeah, good job, overemphasizing that he was married, he'd
- 2:14Speaker 1: be he'd be cleaning up right now, Steve, don't are
- 2:17Speaker 1: you have you played Big Buck Hunter?
- 2:19Speaker 2: Philm I was never a big like light gun like.
- 2:22Speaker 4: I didn't play I didn't have a Nintendo's I never
- 2:24Speaker 4: played duck Hunt, and I didn't spend enough time in
- 2:26Speaker 4: bars before I had a kid to be to get
- 2:28Speaker 4: really good at big buck hunters, so it was never
- 2:30Speaker 4: a So this is a whole learning experience for me.
- 2:32Speaker 4: I'm excited to check it out.
- 2:34Speaker 2: Is Randall good at big buck hunter? I don't believe.
- 2:37Speaker 4: So I know cal col holds some pride for his
- 2:40Speaker 4: his buck hunter.
- 2:41Speaker 2: Skit forbid that playing in it.
- 2:43Speaker 5: Yeah, And my buddy Jimmy Dorn had a pizza shop
- 2:45Speaker 5: and he had that in there, and he knew I
- 2:47Speaker 5: hated a big buck hunter because I thought it taught
- 2:48Speaker 5: bad ethics and I'd come in there.
- 2:50Speaker 2: At first he'd do his hand my kids.
- 2:51Speaker 5: Rolls quarters just to antagonize me.
- 2:55Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm ambivalent towards it. I imagine you're going to
- 2:59Speaker 3: see a bunch of nons pretending they're hunters there film.
- 3:01Speaker 4: Oh fir, I mean yeah, most likely Randall kind of
- 3:05Speaker 4: I think is planning on dressing the part. I think
- 3:06Speaker 4: he wants to go in full first light camo and
- 3:08Speaker 4: just hang out. So we'll see how that goes. But
- 3:11Speaker 4: we've talked to the guys putting it on and they
- 3:13Speaker 4: say it's a mix of hardcore real hunters and people
- 3:16Speaker 4: who have never touched a gun in their life. So
- 3:18Speaker 4: we're excited to meet all the people that are going
- 3:20Speaker 4: to be there.
- 3:21Speaker 3: We'll have fun. Thanks, all right, before we get into
- 3:25Speaker 3: the meat and potatoes today's show, And need to let
- 3:29Speaker 3: everyone know that the newest edition of our audio original
- 3:33Speaker 3: book series Meat Eaters American History, The Hide Hunters eighteen
- 3:37Speaker 3: sixty five eighteen eighty three, releases next Tuesday on October fourteenth.
- 3:43Speaker 3: You can pre order it now wherever you get audio books,
- 3:47Speaker 3: audible Apple books, wherever you can get them. Ste you
- 3:51Speaker 3: want to give folks ideas, an idea of what to
- 3:55Speaker 3: expect from hide hunters, like some some titillating tidbits about
- 3:59Speaker 3: the like of a hide hunter.
- 4:01Speaker 6: Yep.
- 4:01Speaker 5: For those of you that have listened to or follow
- 4:03Speaker 5: our Meet Eaters American History series, we've been focusing on
- 4:07Speaker 5: different eras of commercial market hunters. So we did the
- 4:10Speaker 5: long hunters, which were the professional deer skin hunters, most
- 4:15Speaker 5: notably Daniel Boone and his colleagues. Then from there we
- 4:18Speaker 5: jumped up to the Mountain man eraw which was the
- 4:21Speaker 5: Rocky Mountain beaver trappers. Big names from that era would
- 4:24Speaker 5: be Jim Bridger, John Colter, Jed Smith and that volume
- 4:31Speaker 5: tracked up to eighteen forty. So for the hide hunters.
- 4:34Speaker 5: We're jumping ahead to eighteen sixty five. Eighteen sixty five
- 4:37Speaker 5: is the year that the Civil War ended, and we're
- 4:41Speaker 5: covering the years eighteen sixty five to eighteen eighty three
- 4:45Speaker 5: when the last fifteen million.
- 4:48Speaker 2: Buffalo on the American Great planes.
- 4:51Speaker 5: Were shot out by professional buffalo hunters, which we call
- 4:55Speaker 5: the hide hunters. Very bloody time, very dangerous occupation. Even
- 5:00Speaker 5: though those people are much maligned now and they're regarded
- 5:04Speaker 5: as these great enemies of American wildlife, you have to
- 5:08Speaker 5: begrudgingly if even if doing so begrudgingly, you have to
- 5:13Speaker 5: acknowledge just an incredible skill set.
- 5:16Speaker 2: It sounds funny to say it, but an.
- 5:18Speaker 5: Incredible skill set, and I had stated to say it too,
- 5:22Speaker 5: an unbelievable work ethic that propelled these guys out on
- 5:28Speaker 5: the Great planes to do the great buffalo slaughter. So
- 5:32Speaker 5: we cast some shade on them. We talked about their motivations.
- 5:36Speaker 5: They were products of the Civil War. These are generally
- 5:39Speaker 5: people that had no prospects in life. Poverty was rampant,
- 5:44Speaker 5: and the American history pushed them onto the planes where
- 5:49Speaker 5: they where they killed fifteen million buffalo and in a
- 5:54Speaker 5: decade Yep, it's an incredible story. And in from now
- 5:58Speaker 5: we'll jump into whatever we're debate and what we're going.
- 6:00Speaker 2: To jump into next you haven't decided yet. No, we
- 6:03Speaker 2: might do something about the birds, the bird hunters.
- 6:06Speaker 3: I know for a time you're thinking about whales, but
- 6:09Speaker 3: you knew, no.
- 6:10Speaker 2: Not doing the whalers.
- 6:11Speaker 5: I think that we might jump to we might jump
- 6:15Speaker 5: to Alaska during the Great Depression or sorry a Latin, No,
- 6:20Speaker 5: it would be Alaska and we would cover possibly Klondike
- 6:25Speaker 5: to statehood.
- 6:26Speaker 2: Or we would cover the Roaring.
- 6:28Speaker 5: Twenties and end it at the stock market crash, Yeah,
- 6:31Speaker 5: and surrounding for the Alaskan fur trade during the during
- 6:36Speaker 5: the real glory days when when huge amounts of cash
- 6:40Speaker 5: we're entering that state and coming into the hands of
- 6:43Speaker 5: people who had never had a cash economy.
- 6:45Speaker 3: Yeah. All right, So you've done three of these Steve
- 6:49Speaker 3: the long Hunters, mountain men, and hide hunters, and you
- 6:52Speaker 3: can include the next one too if you want. In
- 6:54Speaker 3: this in this question, I'm going to ask you if
- 6:57Speaker 3: you could go back in time and pick one of
- 6:59Speaker 3: these eras and professions to like go do, which would
- 7:02Speaker 3: it be?
- 7:03Speaker 2: And one the hide hunters?
- 7:04Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, like, yeah, if I could do the the
- 7:10Speaker 5: you know, if I could do the time machine thing.
- 7:12Speaker 5: I've always said that I would like to go back
- 7:14Speaker 5: to the first Americans to hit the great planes twenty
- 7:18Speaker 5: thousand years ago, seventeen thousand years ago, whatever, man. But
- 7:23Speaker 5: if I was really sitting there and I had to
- 7:24Speaker 5: hit the button, the go button, I might go back and.
- 7:27Speaker 2: Go with Boone.
- 7:29Speaker 5: Daniel Boone the first time he went to the Cumberland
- 7:31Speaker 5: Gut and spent two years in Kentucky.
- 7:33Speaker 3: Because that was still new territory. Like the hide hunters
- 7:35Speaker 3: weren't in like new territory necessarily right.
- 7:38Speaker 5: Like no, no, when you get into the hide We'll
- 7:41Speaker 5: put it this way. This is something we point out
- 7:42Speaker 5: a bunch in our Hide Hunter piece. There were hide
- 7:46Speaker 5: hunters that killed ten thousand buffalo. There was an individual
- 7:52Speaker 5: who killed ten thousand who lived to see Playboy magazine published.
- 7:58Speaker 5: He lived to see the end of the Korean War.
- 8:01Speaker 5: You lived to see the introduction of the corvette nuclear subs,
- 8:08Speaker 5: and he was fighting comanches while killing ten thousand buffalo
- 8:13Speaker 5: on the tests wold you it is this market hunting
- 8:17Speaker 5: period that straddles it perfectly straddles what we think of
- 8:24Speaker 5: as yesterday what we think of as today.
- 8:28Speaker 2: You know, it's a crazy era.
- 8:29Speaker 3: Kind of makes uh living through the creation of the
- 8:32Speaker 3: internet not seemed like such a big deal.
- 8:34Speaker 2: There were hide hunters who would who lived to see
- 8:38Speaker 2: the publication of a Sand County Almanac, and who lived
- 8:43Speaker 2: and who experienced a person Theodore Roosevelt campaigning against market
- 8:49Speaker 2: hunters become president.
- 8:52Speaker 3: And they started to think about that.
- 8:54Speaker 5: No, they like they sat on the They sat on
- 8:56Speaker 5: the edge of something.
- 8:57Speaker 2: Man.
- 8:58Speaker 3: All right, So order that book up and listen to it,
- 9:01Speaker 3: and uh, Steve will figure out what the next one
- 9:04Speaker 3: is going to be before we get into Heather's interview.
- 9:07Speaker 3: You guys, uh playing in any big hunts that are
- 9:10Speaker 3: coming up.
- 9:12Speaker 2: I'm solid kid from here on out for a while.
- 9:14Speaker 3: Me too.
- 9:15Speaker 2: I got I got a month of hot kid action.
- 9:17Speaker 3: Kid Antelope, kid deer. Yeah, that's that's fun.
- 9:20Speaker 2: Though this No, No, I wouldn't have I wouldn't have
- 9:23Speaker 2: it any away.
- 9:23Speaker 6: Man.
- 9:24Speaker 5: Yeah, all kids all the time, speaking to kids. I
- 9:25Speaker 5: put some little kiddie waiters on your desk.
- 9:27Speaker 1: Oh, I saw that, Thank you. Yeah, we'll use those.
- 9:29Speaker 1: Go looking for crowdedy.
- 9:30Speaker 3: Orry, Are you done archery hunting or you know. No,
- 9:34Speaker 3: we'll keep at it till the bitter end.
- 9:35Speaker 1: Man, it's only been a couple of weeks. We've still
- 9:37Speaker 1: got a few more here in Montana.
- 9:38Speaker 2: Kids.
- 9:39Speaker 1: What kids, Well, my kids just on the cusp of
- 9:42Speaker 1: being able to come with me. Yeah, you'll go out
- 9:43Speaker 1: and toot on the bugle a little bit, but it's
- 9:45Speaker 1: more of a nuisance than anything. Uh So, no, I'm
- 9:48Speaker 1: going to get back out for it. But you got
- 9:49Speaker 1: to bring them, man, bring Oh he loves it. But yeah,
- 9:55Speaker 1: any close calls with bulls yet?
- 9:57Speaker 2: Oh yeah, yeah.
- 9:58Speaker 1: I tried to get a couple buddies into the milk
- 10:00Speaker 1: that second week of the season. I guess it would
- 10:02Speaker 1: have been the third week of September, and we almost
- 10:03Speaker 1: killed elk every single day. But they weren't like fired
- 10:06Speaker 1: up like they typically yet.
- 10:09Speaker 2: Nope, I have drawn no drawbacks.
- 10:12Speaker 1: Yeah, all right, knocked a few.
- 10:15Speaker 3: Let's uh, let's get to the interview. I I think
- 10:18Speaker 3: Phil has a special drop here for Heather Duville. Bill,
- 10:21Speaker 3: you don't lay that down.
- 10:23Speaker 4: Yeah, I put it in the script and then I
- 10:24Speaker 4: took it out because I didn't know if you guys
- 10:26Speaker 4: wanted to listen to it.
- 10:26Speaker 2: But here, man, me we'll rate it.
- 10:29Speaker 3: We'll rate it well.
- 10:30Speaker 4: I think this is one that I haven't played since
- 10:32Speaker 4: you were last here.
- 10:33Speaker 2: Oh so you already we've already, we've already heard it.
- 10:35Speaker 4: It's the Fleetwood mac One.
- 10:36Speaker 2: Oh, yes, I'm not familiar.
- 10:38Speaker 3: All right, I'll listen to at bait. There we got Okay, there,
- 10:59Speaker 3: it is nice. All right. For those of you who
- 11:02Speaker 3: aren't familiar, we're gonna be talking to Heather Deville. Her
- 11:08Speaker 3: traditional name Heather. I apologize if I butcher this stuff.
- 11:14Speaker 3: Her traditional name is Ku Tink, and she belongs to
- 11:16Speaker 3: the Shank what Eye clan, which is Egle Wolf. Did
- 11:20Speaker 3: I get it right? Okay, don't worry about that.
- 11:26Speaker 7: Pronunciation. But I appreciate you trying. Thank you.
- 11:29Speaker 3: Well.
- 11:30Speaker 2: You can tell us.
- 11:31Speaker 3: Let me get through this. I'm trying to get through this, Heather,
- 11:33Speaker 3: let me get through it. You live on the ancestral
- 11:37Speaker 3: lands of the Tlingott people in southeast Alaska, and the
- 11:41Speaker 3: Heather actively practices and shares the heritage and cultural traditions
- 11:46Speaker 3: that have been passed down for ten thousand years. All right,
- 11:49Speaker 3: so tell us how you pronounce that stuff.
- 11:53Speaker 7: Yeah, my traditional name is Ku Tink, and I belong
- 11:56Speaker 7: to the shuan Kwaiti clan. I didn't do that bad, Okay,
- 12:03Speaker 7: you're on.
- 12:06Speaker 5: I feel like if I called him Brady, If I
- 12:09Speaker 5: call him Brady and he's like, well, it's actually brody,
- 12:11Speaker 5: and then I go like, well I wasn't that bad.
- 12:13Speaker 3: Right exactly?
- 12:17Speaker 7: Ann cling it with a k, but it's like a
- 12:21Speaker 7: th h l fling it and yeah.
- 12:25Speaker 2: Well how they do it?
- 12:26Speaker 7: Like do it?
- 12:26Speaker 2: Do it where you? Because I know you. Yeah, there's
- 12:30Speaker 2: a way you say it.
- 12:31Speaker 5: Then there's a way you let people that wouldn't are
- 12:34Speaker 5: familiar with the language say it, like but but do
- 12:35Speaker 5: it like how you do it you were talking to
- 12:37Speaker 5: if you were talking to an elder, you know, from
- 12:40Speaker 5: your from your.
- 12:40Speaker 7: People, Yeah, I would say fling it okay.
- 12:46Speaker 2: But but then people people that are just kind of
- 12:48Speaker 2: hacking their way through. It's like uh clink clink.
- 12:52Speaker 3: It got it. I'll try to get it right next time.
- 12:59Speaker 7: Thank you.
- 12:59Speaker 3: Yuh.
- 13:01Speaker 2: You know.
- 13:02Speaker 7: Pretty funny is well we're going to talk about the show.
- 13:05Speaker 7: But the team was up here. You know, our dogs
- 13:08Speaker 7: only know flinget commands, so they don't know English.
- 13:12Speaker 2: That's great, so no one else can tell your dog
- 13:14Speaker 2: what's up.
- 13:15Speaker 3: So if your dog's attacking someone and and that person
- 13:19Speaker 3: tries to say.
- 13:22Speaker 7: Yeah, you gotta yell at them and cling it. So
- 13:25Speaker 7: the meat eater crew that was up here, we're learning
- 13:27Speaker 7: all kinds of words.
- 13:29Speaker 2: Yeah, clingett dog commands.
- 13:31Speaker 7: They had heard the dogs out of the scenes and
- 13:35Speaker 7: in the house.
- 13:38Speaker 3: Heather, I know you've been busy like all summer putting
- 13:41Speaker 3: up fish and sea otter for and I think you've
- 13:45Speaker 3: been out deer hunting already. Like, what what else do
- 13:47Speaker 3: you you got going on through the fall? What's the
- 13:49Speaker 3: rest of the year look like for you?
- 13:52Speaker 7: Yeah, this is really a I think I was last
- 13:56Speaker 7: joined in the spring, which is like the emergence of
- 13:59Speaker 7: new life, and now we're entering fall, which is a
- 14:03Speaker 7: quieter time and a more RESTful time. So I'm kind
- 14:08Speaker 7: of grounding myself into a more balanced schedule. The salmon return,
- 14:14Speaker 7: the leaves are turning, you know, it's getting colder. I
- 14:17Speaker 7: did get a deer last month, and I'm one of
- 14:21Speaker 7: my goals this fall and winter season is to practice
- 14:26Speaker 7: my bark tanning skills. So I actually got the deer
- 14:32Speaker 7: and I tanned. I successfully tanned the hide. But already, yeah,
- 14:40Speaker 7: I have often it a little, but you know, it's
- 14:43Speaker 7: got a really side. This is done with tanning, so
- 14:50Speaker 7: like a tree skin and a deer skin will make
- 14:53Speaker 7: leather and it smells good.
- 14:56Speaker 3: And all of the.
- 14:59Speaker 7: Ingredients that you use can just go right back into
- 15:01Speaker 7: the earth are non toxic organic. So I was pretty proud.
- 15:06Speaker 7: This is my first.
- 15:08Speaker 2: Yeah, man, congratulations, that's awesome. That looks great.
- 15:11Speaker 3: Yeah, you guys shoot those deer in the head, so
- 15:14Speaker 3: there's no bullet holes in that in that hide.
- 15:17Speaker 7: Yeah, we try to shoot everything in the head too.
- 15:22Speaker 7: Like for deer, we try to reduce waste, yep, because
- 15:27Speaker 7: we eat the neck and we take the neck bones
- 15:29Speaker 7: and make deer neck soup. And I have a funny
- 15:35Speaker 7: I have a funny story about the first time I
- 15:37Speaker 7: learned how to hunt deer. I had never shot anything
- 15:45Speaker 7: in the body before, because I just learned how to
- 15:47Speaker 7: shoot everything in the head or like me, right behind
- 15:50Speaker 7: the ear. So we were hiking up and you know,
- 15:54Speaker 7: I didn't learn how to hunt until I was almost thirty.
- 15:58Speaker 7: So my dad gave me a rifle and I was
- 16:00Speaker 7: I hadn't missed yet, And I was like, Dad, what
- 16:03Speaker 7: if I was going to shoot a deer in the body,
- 16:06Speaker 7: Because I know a lot of people from other areas,
- 16:09Speaker 7: you know, shoot deer like in the side. I said,
- 16:12Speaker 7: what do I do? And so he we kind of
- 16:15Speaker 7: stopped and on our hike and he told me. So
- 16:19Speaker 7: I was like okay, and I was, you know, pondering that.
- 16:21Speaker 7: And we got to this muskeg and there's a huge
- 16:26Speaker 7: buck right across looking at me and it's like a
- 16:29Speaker 7: four by five, the biggest deer I've ever seen. He's like, oh, shoot, shoot, yeah, okay.
- 16:35Speaker 7: So I get ready and I'm aiming for its head
- 16:38Speaker 7: and I was like, well, I'm just going to shoot
- 16:40Speaker 7: in the body because then I'll for sure get it.
- 16:42Speaker 7: And I dropped down. I shot it in the body
- 16:45Speaker 7: and it runs away and he screams like what happened
- 16:50Speaker 7: in the first years and I I don't know, and
- 16:57Speaker 7: what happened? And I was like, I tried to shoot
- 16:59Speaker 7: it in the body. Well, he gave me a two
- 17:02Speaker 7: twenty two. So I had HI last year and there's
- 17:09Speaker 7: all this brush right and I just thought a bullet
- 17:12Speaker 7: would blast right through brush. And he's like, you can
- 17:14Speaker 7: never shoot through brush. Tell me that part. And I
- 17:20Speaker 7: lost sleep for like a week. I could not stop
- 17:23Speaker 7: thinking about missing that deer and it was big and
- 17:28Speaker 7: shooting through brush, and so the learning experience.
- 17:32Speaker 3: Yeah, well it seems like you've got the deer hunting
- 17:35Speaker 3: thing figured out now though.
- 17:38Speaker 7: Yeah, we try to skin him real close, but you
- 17:41Speaker 7: don't want to skin him so close where you score
- 17:43Speaker 7: the hide. So definitely take your time and and you know,
- 17:48Speaker 7: skin him nice if you're going to save the hides,
- 17:51Speaker 7: and then you can bark tim and you know, it
- 17:55Speaker 7: takes like a few days to like the hair slip
- 18:01Speaker 7: and then a week to bark tan and it produces
- 18:06Speaker 7: beautiful results. And so now I just mixed up this
- 18:09Speaker 7: morning a big toe of bark tanns because I'm going
- 18:13Speaker 7: to try to do a hair on barked hand bear
- 18:17Speaker 7: hid that was gifted to me this spring.
- 18:20Speaker 2: Cool.
- 18:21Speaker 3: You need to make Steve some buckskin breeches out of
- 18:24Speaker 3: those things.
- 18:24Speaker 2: I would like some buckskin briches, yeah, white ones.
- 18:26Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, there you go. All right, Heather, you got
- 18:31Speaker 3: a couple couple new shows out on the Meat Eater Network,
- 18:35Speaker 3: Our Way of Life, which really digs into how you
- 18:38Speaker 3: and your dad live up there in Southeast Alaska and
- 18:42Speaker 3: everything you do out on the land and out on
- 18:44Speaker 3: the water, and that airs every Monday night at six
- 18:49Speaker 3: on our YouTube channel, the Media or YouTube channel. You
- 18:52Speaker 3: got anything to say about the experience of making that show.
- 18:56Speaker 7: Oh yeah, this is an incredible experience. I'm so grateful
- 19:01Speaker 7: for Meat Eater, you know, sharing my story, and I
- 19:06Speaker 7: really think of it as not my story, but this
- 19:11Speaker 7: was a way for me to share a story that's
- 19:13Speaker 7: much bigger than mine, for our culture and you know,
- 19:19Speaker 7: the people that came before me, and also for youth.
- 19:21Speaker 7: So there's going to be a place now where you
- 19:24Speaker 7: can look up, you know, about sea otter hunting or
- 19:27Speaker 7: processing a CEO and find information, whereas previously there hasn't
- 19:34Speaker 7: been a lot of documentation on these processes.
- 19:38Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah, I think it's one of the coolest things
- 19:41Speaker 3: we've done a long time. It's great, it's awesome.
- 19:46Speaker 7: The first episode launched last night, and I've just received
- 19:52Speaker 7: an incredible amount of messages and phone calls and just
- 19:58Speaker 7: all the love that I'm feeling from friends, family and
- 20:03Speaker 7: people that I don't know, you know, from all over
- 20:05Speaker 7: is really overwhelming. I didn't really know what to expect.
- 20:11Speaker 7: I was kind of having a heart attack like this week,
- 20:15Speaker 7: nervous about it, but I felt nothing but love. And support,
- 20:20Speaker 7: and I really you know, I have a ten year
- 20:26Speaker 7: old niece and she, you know, goes on social media
- 20:30Speaker 7: and she talks about Taylor Swift and all these influencers, right,
- 20:34Speaker 7: And I I really wanted youth to be able to
- 20:39Speaker 7: go on social media and go on YouTube and see
- 20:43Speaker 7: you know, youth from here and see people like them
- 20:47Speaker 7: and people they know practicing their culture and not thinking
- 20:53Speaker 7: that you have to be like somebody else to be,
- 20:56Speaker 7: you know, on YouTube or on social media, and you
- 21:02Speaker 7: can just be yourself and we are ourselves.
- 21:06Speaker 6: You know.
- 21:06Speaker 7: Yeah, literally talked about having the runs on our first
- 21:14Speaker 7: He's like, I forgot the game was even there. So
- 21:17Speaker 7: it's really funny. If you don't want to watch Seatter Hunting,
- 21:20Speaker 7: you could fast forward to five minutes in and catch
- 21:24Speaker 7: a really funny scene with and the relationship between me
- 21:27Speaker 7: and my dad is pretty funny to watch.
- 21:31Speaker 3: Yep, it's great. And you're at the other show that
- 21:34Speaker 3: you're in Mediator Sheds. Are you in the shed right now?
- 21:39Speaker 8: I am.
- 21:39Speaker 7: I'm in my first shop. I spend a lot of
- 21:41Speaker 7: time in here in the fall and winter months. And
- 21:46Speaker 7: that was such a fun episode.
- 21:52Speaker 3: That's where you do all your all your working on first,
- 21:55Speaker 3: like all the stuff you make.
- 21:57Speaker 7: Yeah, yeah, So previously I did get the opportunity to
- 22:02Speaker 7: share this on sheds, which I wish I would have.
- 22:06Speaker 6: Let me grab this.
- 22:07Speaker 7: So my friends showed up with my dad last year
- 22:13Speaker 7: and started building me this shed. So previously I was
- 22:15Speaker 7: working out of my two spare bedrooms and my kitchen,
- 22:19Speaker 7: so my whole house was full of supplies and machines
- 22:22Speaker 7: and all kinds of stuff were working on first and
- 22:27Speaker 7: my friends and family been so incredibly generous and showing
- 22:33Speaker 7: up and building me this space. And I love this space.
- 22:37Speaker 7: But until last year, I sewed everything by hand.
- 22:41Speaker 6: So this was my.
- 22:44Speaker 7: Thing that I carried everywhere was equipment. Yeah, so I
- 22:48Speaker 7: had a little nail clipper for threads you could take
- 22:51Speaker 7: it on an airplane, skin sewing needles, my thimble that
- 22:56Speaker 7: I've been using since I was twelve. You could say
- 22:58Speaker 7: I've reinforced the add like three times. And so I
- 23:03Speaker 7: want to also encourage people like you don't start like
- 23:08Speaker 7: this with the shed, Barbie shed. You know, I started
- 23:11Speaker 7: going by hand. Every item I made my hand. It
- 23:15Speaker 7: took hours, and I was working out of my house.
- 23:19Speaker 7: So this this feels surreal. I can't believe I have
- 23:24Speaker 7: this shed.
- 23:26Speaker 3: It's great. Yeah, all right, well, well thanks for checking
- 23:31Speaker 3: in with us. Heather is great talking to and I
- 23:34Speaker 3: hope you have a good fall and good winter.
- 23:37Speaker 2: Thank you, Heather. Congratulations on that skin man that looks
- 23:39Speaker 2: that looks incredible. I'm jealous of that. I gotta I
- 23:42Speaker 2: gotta check that out.
- 23:43Speaker 7: Thank you.
- 23:44Speaker 1: Yeah, all right, do you take it easy?
- 23:48Speaker 2: Thanks Heather.
- 23:52Speaker 3: Up next, h We've got a segment we've done a
- 23:55Speaker 3: time or two in the past called Indefensible Laws, where
- 23:58Speaker 3: we're gonna make the case for passing fishing game laws
- 24:01Speaker 3: and regulations some folks might consider indefensible, but those folks
- 24:06Speaker 3: are wrong because we're we're going to defend them and
- 24:08Speaker 3: make a case for them. So Corey, you're you're up first.
- 24:11Speaker 2: Oh gosh, okay, just cut this one out, Phil. Why, Well,
- 24:16Speaker 2: because this is coming from don't even float the idea.
- 24:19Speaker 2: I don't even float the idea.
- 24:21Speaker 3: I've heard Corey say this a number of times, so
- 24:23Speaker 3: he's got to make a case for it.
- 24:24Speaker 2: Don't give it air.
- 24:25Speaker 1: Yeah, this is coming from a very disgruntled born and
- 24:28Speaker 1: raised Montana here in a room surrounded by Hope cracks
- 24:31Speaker 1: down other states. But I'd love it if game agencies,
- 24:38Speaker 1: whatever state you might be in, and I think a
- 24:40Speaker 1: lot of you know, natives to their states would agree
- 24:42Speaker 1: that some of these once or more than once in
- 24:46Speaker 1: a lifetime tags maybe should be given to those native
- 24:50Speaker 1: residents instead of just you know, the folks who just
- 24:53Speaker 1: moved in six months ago to be able to apply
- 24:55Speaker 1: for some.
- 24:55Speaker 5: Well, I think if you've been like if you did
- 24:57Speaker 5: like like let's say like twenty years in the state,
- 25:00Speaker 5: you're cool mmmmm.
- 25:02Speaker 1: Or there's like cumulative or let's say there's like kids
- 25:05Speaker 1: are in this boat.
- 25:07Speaker 3: Let's say there's like five elk tag bull elk tags
- 25:10Speaker 3: available and it's like special hunts specially like yeah, maybe
- 25:14Speaker 3: spot one of those for a native or something.
- 25:16Speaker 1: No, well, sure, yeah, I'm really thinking like some of
- 25:19Speaker 1: these critters that you know, somehow they're not growing as
- 25:22Speaker 1: fast as other animals like moose, big horn sheep numbers
- 25:27Speaker 1: are just going.
- 25:28Speaker 6: Down into it.
- 25:29Speaker 2: I just think you're cutting a little Like I think
- 25:31Speaker 2: that like twenty years is cool, but.
- 25:33Speaker 1: As Brody alluded to, maybe just having like a hard
- 25:37Speaker 1: percentage of those going to twenty A certain group of
- 25:40Speaker 1: people in a bucket.
- 25:43Speaker 2: And I don't know.
- 25:44Speaker 1: You know, obviously twenty year bucket, you know what hospital
- 25:48Speaker 1: you were born in or whatever.
- 25:49Speaker 5: It's like you get kind of entered into, Like it
- 25:51Speaker 5: just gets a little hard to control, you know, if
- 25:53Speaker 5: it's twenty years, it's cool.
- 25:54Speaker 1: Right, So it's just getting hard to draw those tags.
- 25:57Speaker 2: I mean I can see.
- 25:58Speaker 3: I mean it's always so harden.
- 26:00Speaker 6: Oh, but it's just.
- 26:01Speaker 1: Getting harder and harder and harder.
- 26:02Speaker 3: By degrees though, Like how much harder is point oh
- 26:06Speaker 3: four percent versus point oh two five percent?
- 26:09Speaker 7: Right?
- 26:09Speaker 2: Well twice? No one thinks about it like that. No, No,
- 26:14Speaker 2: you're looking at them. Oh shit, they're all the same,
- 26:17Speaker 2: Like they're not all the same.
- 26:18Speaker 9: No.
- 26:19Speaker 1: And my problem was I just didn't buy bonus points
- 26:22Speaker 1: when I was guiding. I didn't think i'd ever leave
- 26:24Speaker 1: the guy.
- 26:25Speaker 5: There was sounds like something maybe there should be a
- 26:28Speaker 5: law that you, if you screw up and don't play
- 26:30Speaker 5: the game, you should be just out yep.
- 26:32Speaker 3: Well, or maybe native should start cruing bonus points at birth.
- 26:37Speaker 2: That'd be nice for a while.
- 26:38Speaker 5: You could buy your kids bid my kids, my two
- 26:42Speaker 5: year old had two bonus points.
- 26:44Speaker 1: Yeah, and then they got rid of that, yep, but
- 26:46Speaker 1: they kept the points.
- 26:47Speaker 6: That's nice.
- 26:48Speaker 3: Yeah, all right.
- 26:50Speaker 5: Anyway, Now what I've been telling my kids, here's the
- 26:52Speaker 5: deal on this one. I've been telling them because I'm
- 26:56Speaker 5: doing all this. If you draw, when you start drawing, moo,
- 27:01Speaker 5: sheep and goat, and I don't get to come with,
- 27:03Speaker 5: you're paying me back for all that ship going back
- 27:06Speaker 5: to when you were a baby.
- 27:08Speaker 2: You know what I'm saying.
- 27:09Speaker 1: Oh yeah, yeah, you get to go along.
- 27:11Speaker 7: No.
- 27:11Speaker 1: I got to go with my dad on his most
- 27:13Speaker 1: likely once in a lifetime moose a few years ago.
- 27:15Speaker 2: It was amazing.
- 27:17Speaker 3: Steve doesn't seem convinced, but I drew.
- 27:21Speaker 2: I Drew Goat. You know, I'm glad I drew.
- 27:22Speaker 3: Well, all right, Steve, what do he got for us?
- 27:27Speaker 2: Well, you know, I've been pondering this man, and I
- 27:29Speaker 2: was gonna do one, but I can't articulate it.
- 27:30Speaker 5: The other day I saw one of those Tesla trucks
- 27:33Speaker 5: with the had he kind of had a Yosemite samed
- 27:37Speaker 5: out where he had like some like adventure stuff and
- 27:42Speaker 5: he had he had one of them ride tubes mounted
- 27:45Speaker 5: to the and I was thinking, like I could let
- 27:48Speaker 5: it slide. I tried to just try to be like
- 27:50Speaker 5: I didn't see that. I didn't see that, but I
- 27:52Speaker 5: can't get it out of my head. I felt like
- 27:54Speaker 5: something died or something was born in that moment. Died
- 27:59Speaker 5: for sure, but yeah, some diet was bored. But that's
- 28:03Speaker 5: not my rule because I haven't thought of what the
- 28:04Speaker 5: law would be my law, and it's totally defensible.
- 28:08Speaker 3: Okay.
- 28:10Speaker 5: I'm not a big like you know, I'm a States
- 28:12Speaker 5: rights guide generally right, and I'm not for like the
- 28:15Speaker 5: man coming down and you know, busting everybody's heads about stuff.
- 28:20Speaker 5: I think a good role for the federal government, a
- 28:22Speaker 5: good use of Trump's time would be that he comes
- 28:29Speaker 5: in and he says he comes in and he says,
- 28:34Speaker 5: Hunter's orange laws going forward is a hat. I don't
- 28:38Speaker 5: care Executive order where you're from. I like orange hat.
- 28:43Speaker 2: I like it.
- 28:44Speaker 1: Yeah, I agree with you on that one.
- 28:45Speaker 5: So that no matter where, it's like during general firearm,
- 28:51Speaker 5: during general firearm, not special SIAS is during general firearm,
- 28:55Speaker 5: whatever your version of that is orange hat, not all
- 28:58Speaker 5: the vast the four hundred inches. Then you're like, you
- 29:02Speaker 5: got your orange vest on, but then you got your
- 29:04Speaker 5: biny harness on. Then you put your backpack on. You're like, well,
- 29:06Speaker 5: technically I don't have four hundred inches because it's all
- 29:09Speaker 5: and you're all worried a hat, wyoming hat.
- 29:13Speaker 3: Or best it's a hat?
- 29:16Speaker 2: Yeah, hat, have it be a hat?
- 29:19Speaker 3: Yep, I now agree, a hat or less.
- 29:26Speaker 2: I don't want Alaska have no orange law. You shouldn't
- 29:29Speaker 2: make them have an orange law. It's like you can't
- 29:33Speaker 2: be more than a hat. Oh my god, ya, that's
- 29:36Speaker 2: what I meant.
- 29:37Speaker 5: You're breaking kind of thinking about my law as I'm
- 29:40Speaker 5: kind of like I hadn't smoothed.
- 29:42Speaker 2: This all out the way I would have liked. No
- 29:44Speaker 2: more than a hat.
- 29:45Speaker 5: If you're more than a hat, they're going to deprive
- 29:47Speaker 5: you of federal funding, schools, highways, nothing, Your state's cut off.
- 29:54Speaker 3: Where's hot pink fall into this whole?
- 29:56Speaker 2: No hot pink.
- 29:57Speaker 5: My daughter made me order a hot pink vest, send
- 30:00Speaker 5: it back. I hope she gets a ticket. I hope
- 30:03Speaker 5: she gets a ticket.
- 30:04Speaker 3: Yeah, who's paying that one?
- 30:06Speaker 2: I'm gonna take it out for lawn.
- 30:07Speaker 5: More money by executive order, no orange hat or else,
- 30:13Speaker 5: no federal funding for anything.
- 30:16Speaker 3: Gotcha, poor kids. We should get that on the ballot.
- 30:20Speaker 3: Mm hmmm, all right my mine. Uh, I don't know
- 30:25Speaker 3: if it's defensible or not. I don't think you.
- 30:28Speaker 6: Shall do it.
- 30:29Speaker 5: You're gonna get some you're gonna get some people. You're
- 30:31Speaker 5: gonna get some yeah what abouts.
- 30:32Speaker 2: Yeah, they're gonna be like yeah, what about right, But
- 30:34Speaker 2: just just go with it.
- 30:36Speaker 3: I don't think you should be allowed to shoot any
- 30:38Speaker 3: mule deer does or antelope doze any anywhere ever, because
- 30:44Speaker 3: like drought winner kill, like those species are always like
- 30:48Speaker 3: one year away from disaster, always always constantly, and we've
- 30:54Speaker 3: just seen places where killing mule deer does like over
- 30:58Speaker 3: time has had disaster effects on like regional deer herds.
- 31:03Speaker 2: Run with it. They're gonna have some naysayers, you're gonna
- 31:05Speaker 2: have some water bouts, but run with it, like if.
- 31:08Speaker 3: You need meat, and like I'm all for it. They're
- 31:12Speaker 3: like here in Montana, you can shoot I don't know,
- 31:16Speaker 3: ten white tailed dos if you really want to.
- 31:18Speaker 2: Mm hmm, if you've got a good gas budget, right.
- 31:20Speaker 3: Well yeah, but there's like ways to get meat, and
- 31:26Speaker 3: I just don't think anyone needs to be shooting mule deer.
- 31:29Speaker 3: Dose is the main thing. But I think antelope too,
- 31:33Speaker 3: because they're just like on the edge all the time
- 31:37Speaker 3: and in a lot of places. There's a general decline
- 31:40Speaker 3: in antelope numbers. Like tell us how you about your
- 31:43Speaker 3: antelope punting experience back in the day, Like what you
- 31:46Speaker 3: guys use to it?
- 31:47Speaker 5: Now? We used to go we'd go out, two of
- 31:50Speaker 5: us to go out east to the eastern part of
- 31:52Speaker 5: the state.
- 31:53Speaker 2: Where because you can get all the dough.
- 31:54Speaker 3: Tags, right, so we have how many do tags would
- 31:57Speaker 3: you get?
- 31:58Speaker 5: We would go out there, we would leave the truck.
- 32:00Speaker 5: Our rule was, you leave the truck, you come back
- 32:01Speaker 5: with two. You leave the truck, come back with two.
- 32:04Speaker 5: You leave the truck, come back with two. Every year, Yeah,
- 32:07Speaker 5: two hunters six analope. Then then all of a sudden
- 32:11Speaker 5: it's like, whoa, there's not that many anelope around.
- 32:13Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 32:13Speaker 5: Then it becomes hard to draw a permit. And all
- 32:15Speaker 5: of a sudden, now they're like, hey, kill all the
- 32:17Speaker 5: dolls you want, right, yeah, two dolls per yeah, and
- 32:20Speaker 5: then let me let me, let me crystal ball this.
- 32:23Speaker 5: In a couple of years, it'll be there's no anelope.
- 32:26Speaker 3: Around exactly because there'll be a bad winner.
- 32:28Speaker 5: And it won't because they're overgrazing. It won't be an
- 32:31Speaker 5: overgrazing thing. It'll be it'll be a weather issue.
- 32:34Speaker 3: Yeah, and a combination of shooting too many doughs for
- 32:37Speaker 3: a few years in a row.
- 32:38Speaker 2: No, I can see it. You're gonna have a lot
- 32:39Speaker 2: of pushback on that one. It's not like mine.
- 32:41Speaker 3: Yeah, Like I could kind of see an exception in
- 32:44Speaker 3: on like private land for like crop damage tags, where
- 32:48Speaker 3: you get a bunch of animals concentrated in a small area.
- 32:51Speaker 3: But that would like be the only thing that I
- 32:54Speaker 3: might be willing to stretch it on. So there you go.
- 32:58Speaker 3: M I wish we or chat going on, so people
- 33:01Speaker 3: could be weighing in on.
- 33:03Speaker 1: Don't get me started on that. How many years in
- 33:05Speaker 1: a row I haven't drawn an antelope tag.
- 33:07Speaker 3: I'll tell you a secret that people aren't gonna like
- 33:09Speaker 3: when they hear it. Either don't do that. No, no,
- 33:12Speaker 3: I get I get antelope tags and don't antelope do tags,
- 33:15Speaker 3: and I don't use it.
- 33:16Speaker 2: He's like the pe to people.
- 33:18Speaker 5: Yeah, he's like the people in Florida that are buying
- 33:20Speaker 5: all the bear draw stuff so they can sit out the.
- 33:22Speaker 3: Hunt, taking away his opportunities from little kiddies.
- 33:27Speaker 2: He's like subverting the will of the state agency like that.
- 33:31Speaker 2: Do is gonna should come down on him man, all right, M.
- 33:38Speaker 3: I'll get some hate for that one, but that's okay,
- 33:40Speaker 3: all right. So we got another interview coming out. Yeah,
- 33:46Speaker 3: the chest off only done it once or twice. We
- 33:50Speaker 3: got our next guest coming up, Guy grown Walld from
- 33:53Speaker 3: Grown Walled Fur and Wool out of Minnesota, Illinois, Illinois. Sorry,
- 33:58Speaker 3: Steve told me Minnesota, and I corrected myself. I didn't
- 34:00Speaker 3: hear you. And this is like, uh, fur and trapping
- 34:05Speaker 3: related stuff.
- 34:06Speaker 2: So Steve, you take.
- 34:07Speaker 3: Steve's gonna roll with the interview. So here we go.
- 34:09Speaker 5: As Brody said, we're joined today by Guy Groenwald from
- 34:12Speaker 5: Grownwald Fur and Wool. Guy happens to be joining us,
- 34:15Speaker 5: uh from overseas. He's he's over in Europe right now,
- 34:20Speaker 5: but he we worked out the time zones and he's
- 34:22Speaker 5: gonna join us in the theme. What we're gonna talk
- 34:24Speaker 5: about is, uh, how there came to be, why there
- 34:29Speaker 5: is and uh an explosion in skunk you heard it right,
- 34:34Speaker 5: skunk hide values some historic highs right now being paid
- 34:39Speaker 5: for skunk hides. And if you follow the fur markets,
- 34:42Speaker 5: and I always do just because I think it's fun.
- 34:43Speaker 5: And I used to like trap a lot and sell
- 34:46Speaker 5: stuff there's always these little bright spots in the fur markets.
- 34:50Speaker 5: And and uh, I can't think of any time my
- 34:53Speaker 5: life when there's ever been a bright spot around skunk hides.
- 34:56Speaker 5: But Guy's gonna Guy's gonna explain it all to us, uh, and.
- 35:00Speaker 2: Your whole career.
- 35:01Speaker 5: Skunks have always been a marketable fur bear, right, Like,
- 35:03Speaker 5: there's always been some market for skunk fur.
- 35:06Speaker 8: No.
- 35:07Speaker 6: No, I mean there was a time where I think
- 35:09Speaker 6: we destroyed like twenty thousand skins out of our freezer.
- 35:12Speaker 6: We just we had stored them for twenty five years,
- 35:14Speaker 6: and we thought it would never come back.
- 35:16Speaker 5: Oh, it goes that bad because the reason I said that,
- 35:18Speaker 5: as I thought, and thanks for correcting me, I always
- 35:22Speaker 5: thought there'd always been some level of a novelty trade
- 35:25Speaker 5: in skunk that kept the market a light.
- 35:27Speaker 6: But it was it was, you know, it was so small,
- 35:30Speaker 6: you know at one time that you know, it just
- 35:33Speaker 6: you know, and we had you know, some of the
- 35:34Speaker 6: off grades, you know, you just there was just no
- 35:36Speaker 6: way to to market them in the novelty market that
- 35:40Speaker 6: maybe took a couple thousand skins a year, got it?
- 35:43Speaker 3: Okay?
- 35:43Speaker 5: Okay, So where where a skunk price has been hitting lately.
- 35:47Speaker 5: And and also you know, before you answer that, maybe
- 35:49Speaker 5: do this. When when you guys buy you got you
- 35:53Speaker 5: guys buy from trappers. You buy from hunters, primarily trappers.
- 35:57Speaker 5: When someone brings you a skunk, what are they bringing
- 35:59Speaker 5: to you? Like, just just explain that product because people
- 36:01Speaker 5: here skunk and they think like, oh, I must smell.
- 36:04Speaker 6: Bad, you know, Okay, So I'd like to differentiate. So
- 36:07Speaker 6: the first thing is is there is going to be
- 36:10Speaker 6: for most skunks this year, very little difference between just
- 36:14Speaker 6: bringing us the tail and bringing us the entire skin.
- 36:17Speaker 6: With the tail. There will be very little difference in price,
- 36:20Speaker 6: if any. And the only reason as far as selling
- 36:25Speaker 6: to my company, that you would want to leave the
- 36:27Speaker 6: you know, the animal intact and not remove the tail
- 36:31Speaker 6: is basically if it's a black hide or almost all black, okay,
- 36:37Speaker 6: because then it'll be sold into the novelty business. And
- 36:39Speaker 6: and even the last couple of years before the the
- 36:43Speaker 6: tail business started, you know, the the novelty business was
- 36:48Speaker 6: kind of good. So you know, skunk were starting to
- 36:50Speaker 6: creep up as far as value. So right now, you know,
- 36:52Speaker 6: there's still a there's still a market for novelty skunks,
- 36:55Speaker 6: and you know, with tails. Uh, you know most of
- 36:58Speaker 6: them have to have tails. And you know we have
- 37:00Speaker 6: thousands of skunks that are placed now without tails because
- 37:02Speaker 6: we can sell the tails, but we can't sell enough
- 37:04Speaker 6: of the hides.
- 37:05Speaker 5: And give you real quick, give me a when the
- 37:07Speaker 5: novelty trade is good and you have a well and
- 37:10Speaker 5: you have a properly put up skunk for what would
- 37:13Speaker 5: that skunk what would that skunk for be selling for?
- 37:15Speaker 6: You know this, maybe twenty bucks something like that for
- 37:19Speaker 6: a really nice one, you know, perfect tail, you know,
- 37:21Speaker 6: big size, something like that. But you know the poor ones,
- 37:25Speaker 6: you know, the novelty business, you know, you just couldn't
- 37:28Speaker 6: move them. So you know it could be a zero.
- 37:30Speaker 6: But you know, before this, before the tail thing came,
- 37:32Speaker 6: you know, you know, even a good one without the tail,
- 37:35Speaker 6: you know, without or with the tail, obviously for a
- 37:37Speaker 6: novelty was maybe twenty dollars. Okay, okay.
- 37:40Speaker 2: And so when guys are when you're buying just for
- 37:43Speaker 2: the tails, and we'll get to what's happening with them,
- 37:45Speaker 2: But when you're buying just for the tails, you're buying
- 37:48Speaker 2: you want the tailbone removed.
- 37:50Speaker 6: I want the tailbone removed, and we want it like
- 37:52Speaker 6: it's stretched and dried, just like any other skin that
- 37:55Speaker 6: you would stretch and dry, or like if you stretched
- 37:57Speaker 6: and dried the skunk skin. You want to do the tail.
- 38:00Speaker 6: You want to remove the fat. I mean, if you're
- 38:02Speaker 6: going to catch a hundred skunks this year, I would
- 38:05Speaker 6: buy a little boor axe. Borax works a little better
- 38:07Speaker 6: than salt. And you know, you don't typically put salt
- 38:10Speaker 6: dry a hide as far as the fur bearer goes.
- 38:13Speaker 6: But a little borax or a little salt on a
- 38:16Speaker 6: on a tail is probably not a bad idea. After
- 38:18Speaker 6: you take the after you take the flesh.
- 38:20Speaker 2: Off, So you're taking there. Let's let's just focus on
- 38:24Speaker 2: the tails, I guess.
- 38:25Speaker 5: So, okay, you're taking a tail, you're cutting the till,
- 38:27Speaker 5: you're cutting the tail off at the base of the tail.
- 38:30Speaker 2: Yep, you're pulling, you're removing the bone.
- 38:33Speaker 5: Then you're scraping all the excess fat and muscle off,
- 38:35Speaker 5: so you scrape it down to clean leather, clean skin.
- 38:39Speaker 6: We should shouldn't take you more than a minute.
- 38:41Speaker 5: You shouldn't take you more in a minute. And then
- 38:43Speaker 5: you're tacking it out. So you're opening that thing out
- 38:45Speaker 5: on a board and tacking it out yeap or.
- 38:48Speaker 6: Putting a little screen across it or anything just to
- 38:50Speaker 6: kind of keep it flat and make sure that you
- 38:52Speaker 6: go all the way to the tip because those longest
- 38:54Speaker 6: white fibers are on the tip, so you want to
- 38:56Speaker 6: make sure you.
- 38:57Speaker 5: Go all the way to the end, and then you
- 38:59Speaker 5: dry it. And if you want to add a little
- 39:01Speaker 5: borax on there to help it dry, that's fine.
- 39:03Speaker 6: That's that's that's probably a pretty good idea, especially, you know,
- 39:06Speaker 6: if you're gonna do any kind of quantity, you know,
- 39:08Speaker 6: that would be a really good idea. You're not gonna
- 39:10Speaker 6: have any hair loss, You're not gonna have any putification,
- 39:13Speaker 6: you know. So it's just it does a little nicer
- 39:15Speaker 6: job because that leather on the on the on the
- 39:17Speaker 6: tail is a little thicker, and just it'll it'll dry
- 39:19Speaker 6: down faster.
- 39:20Speaker 5: Okay, we'll get in a minute to what some of
- 39:22Speaker 5: the what what I deem to be like pretty crazy
- 39:25Speaker 5: prices being paid for skunks right now. But but explain
- 39:29Speaker 5: to folks, where are these skunks going and why weren't
- 39:31Speaker 5: they going there before?
- 39:33Speaker 6: Well, they just they they're they're going for you know,
- 39:36Speaker 6: Hasidic strimles, the hats, the Jewish hats for Orthodox Jews.
- 39:42Speaker 2: Can you pull one of those up real quick?
- 39:43Speaker 3: Phil?
- 39:44Speaker 2: Do we have that technological case? It will take me
- 39:46Speaker 2: a sack, but I can do it. Go ahead, go ahead, guys.
- 39:48Speaker 6: And they're just they're just they just didn't use them.
- 39:51Speaker 6: I mean, they they find a you know, uh, a
- 39:54Speaker 6: fiber that they really like and uh, they use it
- 39:57Speaker 6: and it works, it works well. They want something that's
- 39:59Speaker 6: real long, they want something that's kind of stiff, and
- 40:03Speaker 6: they want something that kind of waves and when they
- 40:07Speaker 6: dance or you know, when they move around. And so yeah,
- 40:11Speaker 6: that's that's what they're looking for.
- 40:12Speaker 2: We're looking at all. We're trying to pull a strimle
- 40:14Speaker 2: up right now.
- 40:15Speaker 6: Okay, I think we pulled one up last year.
- 40:19Speaker 2: Yeah, And so where how how is the skunk is
- 40:22Speaker 2: the skunk?
- 40:23Speaker 7: Like?
- 40:23Speaker 2: How is the tail being employed in that hat?
- 40:25Speaker 6: It's it's they're just using the fibers, But how.
- 40:28Speaker 2: Are they getting them in there? Like like like what
- 40:30Speaker 2: are they hooking it to there?
- 40:32Speaker 6: It's a it's an intricate process. There's glues and there's
- 40:36Speaker 6: innerwoven and yeah, it's it's a real I mean those
- 40:40Speaker 6: aren't you know, three hundred dollars hats.
- 40:41Speaker 3: You know, how many how many tails to make one hat?
- 40:47Speaker 6: I think for the really good ones, maybe twenty sixteen,
- 40:52Speaker 6: twenty or something.
- 40:52Speaker 2: Okay, And you said that's a three hundred dollars hat.
- 40:55Speaker 6: No, I said it's not. I mean it's thousands of dollars.
- 40:58Speaker 5: Okay, So but why did Why are some strimles three
- 41:02Speaker 5: hundred bucks and then some are thousands?
- 41:03Speaker 6: Based on I don't think anything's three hundred, but you
- 41:06Speaker 6: know some of them are definitely a couple of thousand
- 41:08Speaker 6: bucks cheaper.
- 41:10Speaker 5: So that is like, is it fair to say, I
- 41:13Speaker 5: don't want to put words in your mouth, is it
- 41:15Speaker 5: fair to say that this is sort of like a trend.
- 41:19Speaker 2: This is a trend with that style of hat.
- 41:22Speaker 6: It is, but you know this is not like necessarily
- 41:26Speaker 6: like like a typical fashion trend. You know, this could
- 41:29Speaker 6: be used for you know, for years. I mean they've
- 41:32Speaker 6: used that same hat that you had up there, you know,
- 41:34Speaker 6: has sable tails in it, and they've used table tails
- 41:37Speaker 6: for years and years, and there's and underneath it they
- 41:41Speaker 6: use fisher tails and you know, there's they they and
- 41:44Speaker 6: they've used them for years and years and years, and
- 41:45Speaker 6: they do though sometimes changed, they they do sometimes change
- 41:50Speaker 6: the look a little bit and go a different route.
- 41:52Speaker 6: Sable tales get more expensive, they use more of this
- 41:54Speaker 6: or more of that. But they you know, they have
- 41:57Speaker 6: used tails for you know, years and years, they just
- 42:00Speaker 6: haven't used skunk tails ever before.
- 42:02Speaker 5: Are most of these hats being sold in Hasidic communities
- 42:07Speaker 5: in the Eastern US? Or are these being exported to
- 42:10Speaker 5: Hasidic communities in Europe and Israel?
- 42:13Speaker 2: Like where are they winding up?
- 42:15Speaker 6: They are some of the some of the strimle is
- 42:18Speaker 6: is all over, but probably the skunk is mostly just
- 42:21Speaker 6: in the Eastern US, you know, Brooklyn and.
- 42:23Speaker 2: O K got it?
- 42:25Speaker 6: Got it? Got it?
- 42:26Speaker 2: And then when people if a if a consumer is
- 42:30Speaker 2: buying a strimle is, is a consumer shopping just by
- 42:36Speaker 2: look or are they shopping where? Like like if if
- 42:39Speaker 2: you're a if you're selling, if you sell stribles, are
- 42:42Speaker 2: you advertising it as to its contents or is it
- 42:47Speaker 2: people just buy it? Say like the look? Are they
- 42:49Speaker 2: going in and saying like I want one with skunk,
- 42:51Speaker 2: I want one with safe?
- 42:52Speaker 6: Oh no, I mean there's I mean I think even
- 42:55Speaker 6: a pretty casual observer could see the difference and the
- 42:58Speaker 6: difference in quality the longer hair, just how much nicer
- 43:02Speaker 6: it looks. I mean I've seen him in person, and yeah,
- 43:06Speaker 6: I mean it's kind of the bigger the better. Really.
- 43:08Speaker 2: Yeah, my question was very clear what I and you
- 43:13Speaker 2: might not know the answer to this.
- 43:15Speaker 5: Does the buyer? Is the buyer aware of what fur
- 43:20Speaker 5: it was, what fur was being used? Or do you
- 43:23Speaker 5: think it's just you're just aware of the look and
- 43:25Speaker 5: you like the look. I think they're more aware of
- 43:27Speaker 5: the look I see.
- 43:28Speaker 6: Yeah, just they're just like, wow, that looks you know,
- 43:30Speaker 6: that looks a lot more you know, whatever you want
- 43:33Speaker 6: to call that.
- 43:34Speaker 5: Yeah, all right, so let's talk about let's talk about prices,
- 43:37Speaker 5: because this is where it gets kind of interesting. You know,
- 43:40Speaker 5: I remember in the years I trapped, you know, I
- 43:43Speaker 5: mean like skunks man, you know, three four bucks?
- 43:46Speaker 2: Right, So.
- 43:49Speaker 5: What could people expect this coming as we're coming into
- 43:51Speaker 5: the as we're coming into the fall, coming into the
- 43:54Speaker 5: trap in seasons? What could people expect for a good
- 43:58Speaker 5: skunk tail? And what makes a skunk tail good?
- 44:02Speaker 6: We're going to be fifty, thirty five, and twenty depending
- 44:06Speaker 6: on how good the tail is, okay, and twenty and
- 44:12Speaker 6: then if it's if if somebody brings in a tail
- 44:14Speaker 6: and it's completely black, it's worthless. Okay. Now, if you'd
- 44:18Speaker 6: left that on this on a skunk, you know, and
- 44:20Speaker 6: had the whole skunk, and it was a nice skunk,
- 44:23Speaker 6: you know, just maybe with just a little bit of white,
- 44:25Speaker 6: you know, the skunk might be worth fifteen bucks. Okay,
- 44:28Speaker 6: because that can be used as a novelty skunk. But
- 44:30Speaker 6: if they if it's if it's got a lot of
- 44:32Speaker 6: white on it, you might as well just chop it off.
- 44:34Speaker 2: Mhmm. Okay, So what makes when you say a lot
- 44:38Speaker 2: of white? Like try to help someone understand.
- 44:40Speaker 5: So if they're looking at the totality of the tail
- 44:43Speaker 5: and they're seeing that like fifty percent of that tail
- 44:47Speaker 5: is white, where does that sit?
- 44:49Speaker 2: That was?
- 44:49Speaker 6: Probably that's probably a fifty dollars skunk, I mean if
- 44:53Speaker 6: it if it's But the only thing is like sometimes
- 44:56Speaker 6: we have to look at a few other things, like
- 44:59Speaker 6: the end. They could be like it sort of looks
- 45:02Speaker 6: like the fibers are like cut off at like three inches. Yep.
- 45:06Speaker 6: That that could That could also mean it's it's not
- 45:09Speaker 6: worth anything.
- 45:10Speaker 2: Can you see me pretty good?
- 45:12Speaker 6: I can see a little. But that's that's a probably uh,
- 45:15Speaker 6: that would be you know, thirty thirty five bucks probably. Okay,
- 45:20Speaker 6: that's a pretty nice that's a pretty nice that's a
- 45:21Speaker 6: thirty five.
- 45:22Speaker 1: Oh, this one kind of feels like a seven dollars tail.
- 45:27Speaker 2: Now look what'll be looking at now? Thirty five?
- 45:30Speaker 6: Yeah, i'd say maybe maybe maybe even a little better
- 45:32Speaker 6: than that.
- 45:34Speaker 2: Good somewhere.
- 45:36Speaker 5: Yeah, they're all, yeah, dude, I gotta tell you, man,
- 45:39Speaker 5: if I was if I was still, if I was
- 45:42Speaker 5: still just like a Michigan kid with a bunch of traps, dude,
- 45:45Speaker 5: I would be going nuts.
- 45:48Speaker 2: I would be going nuts this fall.
- 45:51Speaker 6: Yeah, well, you know, we I'm certain that you know
- 45:53Speaker 6: there's gonna be more more skunk strap this year.
- 45:55Speaker 5: So you know who's getting real excited right now is
- 45:57Speaker 5: a turkey hunters, because yeah, because like all those with
- 46:03Speaker 5: fur prices being down for a long time. Sure, and
- 46:07Speaker 5: you see these explosions of possums, skunks, raccoons, and you
- 46:11Speaker 5: see like declines in and ground nesting bird populations that
- 46:17Speaker 5: line up with those explosions, and mid sized predators, small
- 46:20Speaker 5: mid sized predators. It could be pretty good news for
- 46:23Speaker 5: birds too, if there's some interest what other oh sorry,
- 46:27Speaker 5: if you trap skunked.
- 46:28Speaker 6: You know you're gonna you're gonna catch all those other
- 46:30Speaker 6: items as well.
- 46:31Speaker 2: Yeah, and you're gonna have easy time getting permissions.
- 46:35Speaker 5: When you go and say can I trap skunks, They're
- 46:38Speaker 5: probably gonna be like, uh huh, Well give us another.
- 46:42Speaker 5: Give us a quick little snapshot, last last thing. We'll
- 46:45Speaker 5: hold you here for give us a snapshot of of
- 46:48Speaker 5: fur market in general, Like like going into the going
- 46:51Speaker 5: into the twenty five twenty six season, what's the what's
- 46:55Speaker 5: the forecast?
- 46:56Speaker 6: I think I think I would start with skunk actually,
- 46:58Speaker 6: and I mean the big question we get asked by
- 47:01Speaker 6: everybody is this thing gonna last? Okay? And I think
- 47:05Speaker 6: it's very similar to the beaver market. You know, three
- 47:08Speaker 6: years ago when the beaver price went way up. You know,
- 47:11Speaker 6: I think that we all thought there is no way
- 47:14Speaker 6: we knew what the usage was. It's a very good market.
- 47:17Speaker 6: The beaver, you know, hat market is still very good.
- 47:20Speaker 6: It's just that trappers went out and caught way more
- 47:23Speaker 6: than we possibly thought they were going to catch, okay,
- 47:26Speaker 6: and so the market got a little depressed. I you know,
- 47:29Speaker 6: there's there's two types of markets to go down. One
- 47:31Speaker 6: is because nobody's using the product, and one is because
- 47:34Speaker 6: they're producing too much. I mean, I like I'm much
- 47:36Speaker 6: more I like a market that's you know, being produced
- 47:39Speaker 6: too much rather than a market that's not being used,
- 47:41Speaker 6: because it means I can still sell it. So it'll it'll,
- 47:44Speaker 6: I think the skunk thing, you know, we'll start certainly
- 47:46Speaker 6: start out hot. We need a lot of skunks, and uh,
- 47:49Speaker 6: we'll just see how aggressive trappers are and if they're
- 47:52Speaker 6: super aggressive. You know, if you have extra skunks, you know, stunkdales,
- 47:57Speaker 6: what do you do with them? You know nothing? So
- 48:00Speaker 6: you know, we'll figure it out as we go. But
- 48:02Speaker 6: for right now, we'll start off hot. I think, uh,
- 48:06Speaker 6: last spring, you know when we ended up you know,
- 48:08Speaker 6: buying that. You know, we run all the routes for beaver,
- 48:10Speaker 6: which is you know into you know April and May.
- 48:14Speaker 6: The market was very difficult. You know, we couldn't hardly
- 48:16Speaker 6: sell a muskrat in April.
- 48:18Speaker 5: May.
- 48:19Speaker 6: We had a very difficult time selling racoon in April May.
- 48:22Speaker 6: China's market because of tariffs. You know, the economy there
- 48:26Speaker 6: was horrible. You know, all those items wild mink, I
- 48:31Speaker 6: mean you just didn't hardly want to buy it. You know,
- 48:32Speaker 6: the guys brought their beavers. They had trapped those and
- 48:35Speaker 6: that market had gone down, So you were buying all
- 48:39Speaker 6: this stuff and you couldn't sell any of it. So
- 48:42Speaker 6: compared to what the market ended up last year, you know,
- 48:45Speaker 6: if you take those prices, which we're you know, which
- 48:47Speaker 6: we're I'll acknowledge they were pretty bad. I mean, I
- 48:50Speaker 6: would say almost every item is up. You know, wild
- 48:53Speaker 6: mink will you know, certainly they'll be double what they
- 48:57Speaker 6: were last year. I mean, they're still not going to
- 48:59Speaker 6: be great, but you know, you could probably see some
- 49:02Speaker 6: twelve dollars mails, which is you know, you know, much
- 49:04Speaker 6: higher than it was last year. I would say muskrats,
- 49:08Speaker 6: you know, they were they were unsaleable, you know at
- 49:10Speaker 6: one time last year. They're they're definitely stronger. We've sold
- 49:14Speaker 6: a few rats recently. Heavy raccoon, you know, the semis
- 49:18Speaker 6: are not so great, but you know some of the heavies,
- 49:20Speaker 6: you know, there's it's just an item that's not produced
- 49:22Speaker 6: that much anymore, you know, Wisconsin, northern Iowa, southern Minnesota, Nebraska,
- 49:28Speaker 6: Dakota's you know that coon is still is still a
- 49:30Speaker 6: bit in demand. So yeah, I mean, I I I'm
- 49:34Speaker 6: a little bit more positive than I was maybe even
- 49:36Speaker 6: at this time last year. As far as the market
- 49:40Speaker 6: on most items, coyote market is still you know, very
- 49:43Speaker 6: very difficult. But most items they're certainly going to be
- 49:46Speaker 6: a market for. And uh, you know, go out and
- 49:50Speaker 6: trap them, and uh, you know, if you're drafting skunks,
- 49:52Speaker 6: you know you might as well, uh, you know, trap
- 49:55Speaker 6: some of the other stuff, you know, some of the
- 49:56Speaker 6: you know, raccoons. You know, obviously you know, look for
- 49:59Speaker 6: the better stuff. You know, you know, it's the stuff
- 50:02Speaker 6: with holes, the stuff that's discolored. You know, things like
- 50:05Speaker 6: that are going to have very little value. But uh,
- 50:07Speaker 6: you know, most stuff will most things will be you know,
- 50:10Speaker 6: a little better than last year.
- 50:11Speaker 5: Okay, last last question, Uh, are there are gonna are
- 50:14Speaker 5: there gonna be thousand dollars bobcats again this year in
- 50:16Speaker 5: the right places?
- 50:17Speaker 8: Ah?
- 50:17Speaker 6: Yeah, sure, I would say so. Yeah. Yeah, the bobcat market,
- 50:20Speaker 6: we're you know, we're pretty well sold out of uh
- 50:23Speaker 6: out of better bobcats. So yeah, market is, uh is

- 50:40Speaker 5: But I'm telling you, dude, if I was like, if
- 50:41Speaker 5: you could go back, if I was like me as
- 50:44Speaker 5: a senior in high school and I knew that I
- 50:47Speaker 5: could be those prices.
- 50:49Speaker 2: On skunks, I would be good.
- 50:51Speaker 3: They were a nuisance catch for you back then.
- 50:53Speaker 2: Or it would be going game busters.
- 50:55Speaker 5: You know you tried to like you did your best
- 50:57Speaker 5: to avoid them. I would be going just to be
- 51:00Speaker 5: able to be like to try getting them. I would
- 51:04Speaker 5: be going absolutely gangbusters.
- 51:07Speaker 3: You're probably some trappers that are going, oh.
- 51:09Speaker 5: Yeah, dude, because you like talking like, yeah, well a
- 51:12Speaker 5: bunch of day. Yeah, and it's just the tails, right
- 51:16Speaker 5: wing nuts.
- 51:19Speaker 3: Cool something new.
- 51:22Speaker 2: That's my whistle for that. Do that, Phil, You're probably
- 51:26Speaker 2: good at it. Nope, Okay, we plugged a live to
- 51:31Speaker 2: her at the end.
- 51:32Speaker 3: Oh, let's do it at the end.
- 51:33Speaker 2: Arkansas sold out, Fanville sold out.
- 51:36Speaker 3: We still got stuff to go through here.
- 51:38Speaker 2: Well, I don't think we're done. I was just gonna
- 51:39Speaker 2: butt it in there. How was my interview to go
- 51:41Speaker 2: too long? No?
- 51:42Speaker 3: No, we're fine.
- 51:43Speaker 1: Perfect man needs you on more of these.
- 51:48Speaker 3: Time for a hot tip Off segment, since it's that
- 51:51Speaker 3: time of year when a lot of you out there
- 51:53Speaker 3: about to get accused of abandoning your husbandly and fatherly duties.
- 51:58Speaker 8: Not me.
- 51:58Speaker 3: Doesn't happen to me, I know a lot of you.
- 52:00Speaker 3: It's it's a problem. We gotta Oh wait, did I
- 52:03Speaker 3: jump ahead?
- 52:05Speaker 6: Yep?
- 52:06Speaker 3: Jumped ahead?
- 52:06Speaker 2: Sorry number six first, Steve questions, No, I know, I
- 52:10Speaker 2: just we've.
- 52:10Speaker 3: Got a bonus hot tip off. We'll get to that,
- 52:12Speaker 3: my bat. It's Hot tip Off time where we decide
- 52:15Speaker 3: which two hunters has the best kernel of hard won
- 52:18Speaker 3: knowledge and expertise. This week, the winner is going to
- 52:20Speaker 3: get a bench made meat crafter, you want to pull
- 52:23Speaker 3: it out, Corey Meat Crafter two point zero, and both
- 52:26Speaker 3: flavors of our our new jerky right there, Steve, you
- 52:31Speaker 3: want to hold Classic Pepper?
- 52:34Speaker 2: What my hold?
- 52:34Speaker 6: Ear? Oh?
- 52:36Speaker 5: Yeah, So the winner's going to get that stuff Classic
- 52:39Speaker 5: Pepper and Hawaiian Terioki.
- 52:41Speaker 3: Winner's getting that stuf Buffalo meat, and both contestants are
- 52:45Speaker 3: going to get a copy of the new Fed Up
- 52:49Speaker 3: Old Trucks Calendar. It signed, which makes it very valuable
- 52:53Speaker 3: and rare.
- 52:55Speaker 2: Collector ye.
- 52:57Speaker 3: And and today's hot tip off. It is a special
- 53:01Speaker 3: Wisconsin edition, the cheese curd edition. We've got Ryan beegle versus,
- 53:06Speaker 3: Kevin Hall, Phil you want to roll the tape, Ryan
- 53:11Speaker 3: bunt Rock.
- 53:15Speaker 10: Hey, folks, Ryan, coming at you here from Wisconsin. I've
- 53:19Speaker 10: got a hot tip off this week for your out
- 53:22Speaker 10: of state hunts. When you have to cross lines and
- 53:24Speaker 10: get the brains out of the skulls for CWD reasons,
- 53:29Speaker 10: pack your cordless drill and you can either bring your
- 53:33Speaker 10: own little fourteen gage wire with a jay hook at
- 53:37Speaker 10: the end, or if you're in a pinch, any old
- 53:40Speaker 10: school tent steak and take your cordless drill, stick it
- 53:46Speaker 10: in the back of the skull and your am. It'll
- 53:49Speaker 10: come out in goops. Dump it out. Take your standard
- 53:53Speaker 10: issue water bottle, or if you're a high roller, get
- 53:56Speaker 10: the skeezy one with the nozzle on the top from
- 53:58Speaker 10: quick drip into the back. Here your squeeze, shake it out,
- 54:05Speaker 10: raamer again, back and forth. Could you get all that
- 54:09Speaker 10: stuff out of the rain cavity?
- 54:12Speaker 2: M M.
- 54:12Speaker 6: It comes out like a goop.
- 54:14Speaker 10: But you got yourself a legal skull for across the
- 54:17Speaker 10: state lines.
- 54:18Speaker 6: Thanks.
- 54:19Speaker 3: That's brilliant. All right, what's the next one? Do you
- 54:21Speaker 3: like that one? Hey, meet your crew.
- 54:27Speaker 8: This is Kevin Comming Atcher from Wisconsin. For my hot tip,
- 54:30Speaker 8: I'd like to discuss a dedicated kill kit. So when
- 54:34Speaker 8: I'm preparing to go on any Western hunt, what I
- 54:37Speaker 8: like to do is take one of these gallon sized
- 54:40Speaker 8: vacuum sealed bags and I'll place my game bags in there,
- 54:45Speaker 8: along with a couple of zip ties, my hunting license
- 54:50Speaker 8: and hunter safety card, maybe throwing a couple of rubber gloves,
- 55:00Speaker 8: and then I always keep a dedicated skinning knife with
- 55:03Speaker 8: extra razor blades all inside this bag.
- 55:07Speaker 2: Mm hmm.
- 55:11Speaker 8: I'll throw it on the vacuum seal here, pull all
- 55:15Speaker 8: the air out of it, and once that's done, I
- 55:20Speaker 8: know I have a dedicated bag that I'll leave in
- 55:22Speaker 8: the bottom of my pack and it's only gonna come
- 55:24Speaker 8: out once I successfully harvest an animal.
- 55:28Speaker 3: Hot tip for you, man, it's a tough one. It's
- 55:32Speaker 3: a tough one.
- 55:32Speaker 5: You know what he should do with that vax either
- 55:34Speaker 5: you ever do this with your kids, Like when we're
- 55:35Speaker 5: going somewhere, I'll take their coming home close and vac
- 55:39Speaker 5: sealed they're coming home close.
- 55:40Speaker 2: Then they never get into them and their head. It
- 55:43Speaker 2: doesn't exist anymore.
- 55:47Speaker 1: Man, I've lost usage for my vac seiler. I don't
- 55:50Speaker 1: like putting meat in there anymore.
- 55:51Speaker 2: So that might be a good way microplastics shrinking your tain.
- 55:55Speaker 1: No, I just have a hard time getting every single
- 55:57Speaker 1: one to seal correctly, and then the meat doesn't last
- 55:59Speaker 1: as long compared.
- 56:00Speaker 2: To but your paper, and I feel like I don't
- 56:03Speaker 2: need to keep this conversation.
- 56:04Speaker 3: Yeah, my license and and my hunter safety card in
- 56:07Speaker 3: there with that stuff.
- 56:09Speaker 5: And I can see putting your tag in there, yeah
- 56:11Speaker 5: tag in some states, but that they can't. You can't
- 56:13Speaker 5: ding them on that.
- 56:15Speaker 3: I'm just saying. I'm just making observations.
- 56:18Speaker 2: It's brilliant.
- 56:19Speaker 3: Probably probably compresses those game bags down nice, so they're
- 56:23Speaker 3: taking up less space.
- 56:24Speaker 2: In your path.
- 56:26Speaker 3: But man, I'm weighing in. I'm going with the skull
- 56:29Speaker 3: cleaning thing because I've used like a piece of coat
- 56:32Speaker 3: hanger and oh yeah, I'm gonna try that.
- 56:35Speaker 2: Here's why I'm going. Here's why I'm going. Brain yeah, slurry.
- 56:42Speaker 2: I the kill kit thing. I like it, but it's
- 56:45Speaker 2: a packaging scheme, Yes, not a scheme.
- 56:47Speaker 5: It's a packaging it's a packing strategy, yes, which is cool, ye,
- 56:53Speaker 5: but it's a package.
- 56:54Speaker 2: It's like it's like it's all stuff you'd already think
- 56:56Speaker 2: to bring, but here's how to.
- 56:57Speaker 3: Like, yeah, you might have it in a little stuff
- 57:00Speaker 3: said ching in a pocket and your backpackage, just a
- 57:03Speaker 3: different way to do it.
- 57:04Speaker 2: So he's pitching us on how to pack it.
- 57:07Speaker 3: Yep.
- 57:08Speaker 2: The other guy with the brain slurry, that's a legit
- 57:11Speaker 2: pain in the ass.
- 57:13Speaker 6: Messy.
- 57:14Speaker 2: So he's introducing a you know, all due respect, i've
- 57:20Speaker 2: heard that before.
- 57:21Speaker 3: Well, I I it's makes it more efficient.
- 57:25Speaker 2: But he's introducing a whole concept yep. So I'm gonna
- 57:29Speaker 2: go with that.
- 57:29Speaker 3: And everyone's got a drill laying around.
- 57:31Speaker 1: So yeah, I mean I've heard the the idea to
- 57:35Speaker 1: vaccial your food and everything if you're really trying to
- 57:37Speaker 1: compact your backpack if you're going on a multi day
- 57:40Speaker 1: hunt or whatever. So that one wasn't new to me.
- 57:42Speaker 1: But using the tent steak on a drill for the
- 57:45Speaker 1: brain matter, that one was new to me. So I'm
- 57:47Speaker 1: going for the brain matter splatter.
- 57:49Speaker 3: All right, man, we got a winner.
- 57:50Speaker 4: Ryan, You're the winner.
- 57:52Speaker 3: Hey, congratulations, gratulations hard one, But Kevin, you still get
- 57:56Speaker 3: a calendar because your tip was pretty good.
- 57:58Speaker 2: Too hard one.
- 58:01Speaker 3: So now we can jump ahead to the and Corey
- 58:05Speaker 3: those we'll get their contact and all that stuff to
- 58:07Speaker 3: get that stuff out. Oh for sure. Cool. All right,
- 58:11Speaker 3: we got a bonus hot tip for you today since
- 58:14Speaker 3: I'll read it again a lot are you out there
- 58:16Speaker 3: are going to get accused of abandoning your husbandly and
- 58:19Speaker 3: fatherly duties. So we got a very special bonus hot
- 58:23Speaker 3: tip that we felt was worth its own segment. Let
- 58:27Speaker 3: a rip phill.
- 58:29Speaker 6: Hi.
- 58:29Speaker 9: My name's Ashley. We live in Wisconsin.
- 58:32Speaker 6: We're new to the area.
- 58:34Speaker 9: I'm a wife of a newish to hunting dad and
- 58:40Speaker 9: we listened to the podcast every now and again and
- 58:44Speaker 9: we thought we would give a hot tip per tip
- 58:47Speaker 9: off from the wife's perspective. If you need here's my tip.
- 58:53Speaker 9: If you need more time because you haven't filled your
- 58:57Speaker 9: tags yet, but you're worried that your wife will get
- 59:02Speaker 9: mad because she's stuck alone with the kids again, Uh huh,
- 59:09Speaker 9: here's my tip. It's five five tips to get your
- 59:12Speaker 9: wife to be totally fine with you going back out
- 59:16Speaker 9: in the sand. Number one, get her coffee, Set her
- 59:20Speaker 9: up for success, Get her a coffee, clean the kitchen,
- 59:26Speaker 9: make lunch, plan for dinner like take out, take out
- 59:32Speaker 9: the meat to thaw. Plan for dinner, make lunch, get
- 59:36Speaker 9: her a coffee, clean the kitchen, and get a new
- 59:40Speaker 9: activity for the kids. Coloring books, new markers. Yes, you
- 59:44Speaker 9: already have markers, but we like new ones, fresh ones.
- 59:48Speaker 9: Activity for the cat, plan an activity for the kids,
- 59:52Speaker 9: plan for dinner, make lunch, get her coffee, clean the kitchen.
- 59:57Speaker 9: She'll never be mad at you for going out again.
- 1:00:00Speaker 6: Gotten.
- 1:00:01Speaker 2: That's a good woman right there, man, because she's like
- 1:00:03Speaker 2: laying out her expectation.
- 1:00:04Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:00:05Speaker 2: No, that dude doesn't have to guess. Good point, person.
- 1:00:10Speaker 3: I mean, it's just like, don't be a goober and
- 1:00:12Speaker 3: just leave without like doing what you're supposed to do.
- 1:00:16Speaker 2: Or or yeah, or you say, like I get it,
- 1:00:20Speaker 2: this is annoying.
- 1:00:21Speaker 5: What could I do exactly like I get it, Like
- 1:00:24Speaker 5: I could get the whole, like I could see from
- 1:00:25Speaker 5: your perspective, this is like a big ass What can
- 1:00:28Speaker 5: I do one short term yep, to help out?
- 1:00:32Speaker 2: And what in long term? What can I do to
- 1:00:33Speaker 2: to like a little payback?
- 1:00:36Speaker 3: Yeah, but I feel like you gotta be careful because
- 1:00:38Speaker 3: you like can't like get this thing where you like
- 1:00:42Speaker 3: work yourself into a corner and you can't go Yeah.
- 1:00:45Speaker 5: Well, right, when his kids get a year after year
- 1:00:47Speaker 5: after year, when his kids get older, though, here's his solution.
- 1:00:52Speaker 2: If this is the thing, this is the thing for
- 1:00:54Speaker 2: young dads.
- 1:00:56Speaker 5: You, if you take all the kids with you, no
- 1:00:59Speaker 5: one will ever get mad exactly you.
- 1:01:02Speaker 2: You're you come home a hero every time.
- 1:01:06Speaker 3: And they don't have to be of hunting age.
- 1:01:08Speaker 5: No, right, If you take them all with you, you
- 1:01:11Speaker 5: could be like, I'm taking the kids out and I'm gonna,
- 1:01:14Speaker 5: uh throw them out of a tree, have fun.
- 1:01:18Speaker 3: Yep.
- 1:01:18Speaker 2: It's like, if you take them all with you, no
- 1:01:21Speaker 2: one is ever ever gonna get mad at you.
- 1:01:25Speaker 3: Yeah, and you can be preemptive about it. You could
- 1:01:27Speaker 3: take them camping over the summer, like before hunting season,
- 1:01:30Speaker 3: and give the spouse a break for a weekend. Sure,
- 1:01:34Speaker 3: then you then you're ahead of the game.
- 1:01:36Speaker 5: People love their kids, but there's a lot most people
- 1:01:38Speaker 5: are like, dude, if you're gonna take them and go
- 1:01:40Speaker 5: away for a couple of.
- 1:01:40Speaker 2: Days, please, Yes, then you don't have to worry about
- 1:01:43Speaker 2: anyway being mad.
- 1:01:44Speaker 3: But Ashley made some great points, so thanks for sharing. Ashley,
- 1:01:48Speaker 3: We're also going to give you one of the signed calendars.
- 1:01:52Speaker 3: Uh and and your husband could put that up in
- 1:01:54Speaker 3: the garage and like mark times when you should be
- 1:01:56Speaker 3: taking care of the kids instead of you.
- 1:01:58Speaker 2: Coffee check, kitchen check, yep, markers check, lunch.
- 1:02:01Speaker 3: Use that calendar the way it's supposed to be us
- 1:02:03Speaker 3: meat thought.
- 1:02:04Speaker 2: I like that little detail.
- 1:02:06Speaker 3: That's yeah, that's a big one.
- 1:02:07Speaker 1: Break out that burger.
- 1:02:09Speaker 2: Get that burger thought out.
- 1:02:11Speaker 1: Thanks Ashley, yep.
