- 1:14Speaker 7: I'm Chris Hansen.
- 1:15Speaker 2: First up today.
- 1:16Speaker 1: How well do you know your neighbor? If they were
- 1:18Speaker 1: doing something illegal behind closed doors? Would you know everyone
- 1:22Speaker 1: who knew Paige Bergfeld thought they had her figured out,
- 1:24Speaker 1: a soccer mom with three kids, But as our nurse
- 1:27Speaker 1: and Night found out, Paige had another side, one that
- 1:29Speaker 1: would put her in danger.
- 1:33Speaker 4: She raised kids by day.
- 1:35Speaker 8: Page was a soccer mom.
- 1:38Speaker 4: And pedaled fantasies by night.
- 1:41Speaker 2: Hello, you've reached modeled.
- 1:42Speaker 4: Inc But this loving mother's double life caught up to her,
- 1:47Speaker 4: leading to a shocking disappearance.
- 1:49Speaker 9: Hey, well you are really really mean. You would be badly.
- 1:57Speaker 2: She would never have not come home.
- 2:00Speaker 4: A bounty of suspects.
- 2:02Speaker 2: Ilan killing anybody over sex.
- 2:05Speaker 4: And a mystery that would take nearly a decade to unravel.
- 2:10Speaker 8: We were still stuck with the reality that we didn't
- 2:13Speaker 8: have a body.
- 2:18Speaker 4: Paige Bergfeld, a thirty four year old mother of three
- 2:21Speaker 4: young children, was living the picture perfect life.
- 2:25Speaker 5: Page was one of those people that just exuded happiness.
- 2:30Speaker 5: When she showed up, you knew she was going to
- 2:32Speaker 5: show up with a smile because she just had that
- 2:36Speaker 5: in her all the time.
- 2:37Speaker 10: Page was always very big about having her family on display.
- 2:42Speaker 10: She would just be radiant when her kids were out playing,
- 2:45Speaker 10: and the most so when it was her brother and
- 2:48Speaker 10: his family. That was even the highest degree of radiancy.
- 2:52Speaker 4: She loved family.
- 2:53Speaker 10: Oh yeah, yeah, then her kids were everything.
- 2:58Speaker 4: Her husband, Rob Dixon, came from a wealthy family and
- 3:02Speaker 4: settling in Grand Junction, Colorado. Paige enjoyed a cavy our
- 3:06Speaker 4: life in a corn dog town.
- 3:09Speaker 10: He was wealthy, so they bought the house in Grand
- 3:11Speaker 10: Junction and then added to it.
- 3:14Speaker 4: But according to District Attorney Dan Rubinstein, Paradise was not
- 3:19Speaker 4: without its troubles.
- 3:21Speaker 8: They had somewhat of its multuous relationship. He would get angry,
- 3:25Speaker 8: he would yell loudly. He would make, you know, threats
- 3:28Speaker 8: or statements that would cause people to be very concerned.
- 3:32Speaker 4: As the couple's finances grew more strained, Page's father, Frank,
- 3:36Speaker 4: was concerned for his daughter's safety.
- 3:39Speaker 10: Dixon is a person that's kind of two personalities. We
- 3:42Speaker 10: think of him.
- 3:43Speaker 2: As good Rob and bad Rob.
- 3:47Speaker 10: And at the first part it was one hundred percent
- 3:50Speaker 10: good Rob, and I think is his financial situation deteriorated,
- 3:56Speaker 10: we saw a lot more of bad Rob.
- 4:01Speaker 5: She had told me she was very concerned about something
- 4:05Speaker 5: bad happening.
- 4:07Speaker 4: In October of two thousand and four, Page made a distressing.
- 4:10Speaker 5: Nine one one call, Where's your emergency?
- 4:15Speaker 6: My husband and I were in a fight.
- 4:17Speaker 11: He wanted the children to stay with him, and he
- 4:20Speaker 11: said that I would come home and friend of all
- 4:22Speaker 11: murdered to name aim Paige Dixon.
- 4:26Speaker 4: The situation was diffused by police and no charges were
- 4:30Speaker 4: filed against Rob, but a year later Page placed a
- 4:33Speaker 4: second call claiming physical abuse.
- 4:36Speaker 10: After the second incident, I set up a bank account.
- 4:39Speaker 10: It was getaway money. I wanted her to be able
- 4:43Speaker 10: to pick up and leave with the kids if.
- 4:44Speaker 2: She needed to.
- 4:46Speaker 4: After eighty years of marriage, Paige and Dixon divorced, But
- 4:50Speaker 4: now she faced the burden of maintaining that luxurious lifestyle
- 4:55Speaker 4: on her own.
- 4:56Speaker 10: Page was enormously entrepreneurial. She started out by setting up
- 5:00Speaker 10: this little series of dance studios for kids that she
- 5:04Speaker 10: called it Brain Dance, And then she went into pamper
- 5:07Speaker 10: Chef and was taking trips for awards, so she looked
- 5:10Speaker 10: like she was doing well there. She had another business
- 5:13Speaker 10: where she was selling these slings for nursing mothers. She
- 5:17Speaker 10: was cobbling together things.
- 5:20Speaker 5: She was one of those people that could juggle an
- 5:22Speaker 5: incredibly full life and yet still be there with her children.
- 5:29Speaker 8: She had a pretty nice house, I think four thousand
- 5:32Speaker 8: r plus square foot house, and her three kids slept
- 5:35Speaker 8: in her bed with her every night.
- 5:37Speaker 3: That's really who she was.
- 5:40Speaker 4: She had quietly begun a romance with her first husband,
- 5:43Speaker 4: Ron Beigler, a high school sweetheart she briefly married after graduation.
- 5:48Speaker 2: He was the first big love.
- 5:51Speaker 8: Ron and Paige kept in touch and started rekindling their relationship.
- 5:56Speaker 4: Weigler lived two hundred and fifty miles away in Denver.
- 6:00Speaker 4: The two arranged to meet halfway at a rest stop
- 6:02Speaker 4: in the town of Eagle on the day she was
- 6:05Speaker 4: last seen. Paige Bergfeld left her million dollar home here
- 6:09Speaker 4: to meet with one of her ex husbands. Sadly, the
- 6:12Speaker 4: young mother would never be seen again. Thursday, June twenty eighth,
- 6:18Speaker 4: Paige and Bigler enjoy a picnic lunch before she begins
- 6:22Speaker 4: the two hour drive back to Grand Junction around seven pm.
- 6:26Speaker 4: By eleven o'clock that night, she still wasn't home and
- 6:29Speaker 4: her young kids were growing distraught. You can hear the
- 6:33Speaker 4: worry on this voicemail. Oh, even her first ex, Ron Bigler,
- 6:45Speaker 4: was growing distressed when Page still wasn't home. The next morning,
- 6:49Speaker 4: he makes a call to the Grand Junction police.
- 6:54Speaker 12: I needed to talk to you about the missing person.
- 6:57Speaker 4: Emergency.
- 6:58Speaker 8: We really have very little sense of exactly what happened.
- 7:01Speaker 8: What we do know is that her kids were expecting
- 7:04Speaker 8: her home. They ultimately reported her missing on that Saturday morning,
- 7:08Speaker 8: after leaving countless messages for her. Her first husband, Ron Biegler,
- 7:13Speaker 8: was leaving messages for her.
- 7:15Speaker 9: You are really really mean you think it would be
- 7:18Speaker 9: badly lord, bad, really, please call that quickly.
- 7:26Speaker 4: Free gets a call. He can still remember as if
- 7:30Speaker 4: it were yesterday.
- 7:31Speaker 10: And he said, are you Paige Bergfell's dead? And I said, yes,
- 7:36Speaker 10: I am. And then he said, did you know she's missing?
- 7:40Speaker 10: This was Saturday morning, about ten thirty on June thirtieth.
- 7:46Speaker 10: And I said, if she didn't come home even a night,
- 7:50Speaker 10: you're dealing with a crime. This isn't a missing person's matter.
- 7:55Speaker 10: This is a crime age on Saturday. Give me a
- 8:00Speaker 10: call on my cell phones to Staffy.
- 8:02Speaker 2: She would never have not come home.
- 8:05Speaker 5: There is nothing ever in her life that would cause
- 8:09Speaker 5: her to just pack up and leave her kids at home.
- 8:12Speaker 5: They meant so much to her.
- 8:14Speaker 10: We never assume that's gonna happen, and we never assume
- 8:17Speaker 10: it's gonna be me.
- 8:21Speaker 4: Police Investigation one oh one start looking at those closest to.
- 8:26Speaker 10: Page, everyone's a suspect and ex husbands immediately or right.
- 8:32Speaker 4: Up there, Detectives seek out Ron Bigler in Denver, Page's
- 8:36Speaker 4: last known contact and the same man who made the
- 8:39Speaker 4: initial missing person's call.
- 8:41Speaker 10: Well, he was the last one to see her, which
- 8:44Speaker 10: made him a person to talk to.
- 8:51Speaker 4: Phone records indicate he and Page called each other on
- 8:54Speaker 4: the drive home, with Bigler's phone peeing cell towers in Denver,
- 8:58Speaker 4: two hundred and fifty miles away. Wait, the last call
- 9:02Speaker 4: was made by Page at approximately nine pm, saying that
- 9:05Speaker 4: she was pulling into Grand Junction.
- 9:08Speaker 3: And that was the last phone call she ever made.
- 9:10Speaker 4: Her first ex is quickly eliminated, so cops turned their
- 9:14Speaker 4: attention to Rob Dixon, Page's second husband, who was now
- 9:18Speaker 4: living in Philadelphia.
- 9:20Speaker 8: A lot of people thought that Rob was the most
- 9:23Speaker 8: likely suspect, just because their breakup was not the most amicable.
- 9:27Speaker 4: What was their breakup line?
- 9:29Speaker 8: There was a misdemeanor domestic violence case reported. You know,
- 9:32Speaker 8: I think that sort of volatility led a lot of
- 9:35Speaker 8: people to think that he was part of this.
- 9:37Speaker 4: The last time Page's close friend, Barbara Campbell saw her,
- 9:41Speaker 4: Paige confided that she had an ominous feeling.
- 9:45Speaker 5: She was really upset with something, and she was worried
- 9:51Speaker 5: because she felt that something bad was about to happen.
- 9:55Speaker 4: Detectives want to speak with Page's X, but have no
- 9:58Speaker 4: idea that this case is about to be blown wide open.
- 10:04Speaker 6: Up.
- 10:04Speaker 4: Next.
- 10:05Speaker 12: Hey, I'm at the corner of twenty three and Logos
- 10:08Speaker 12: and there is a car on fire in the parking lot.
- 10:12Speaker 4: CoP's fine Pages car and you won't believe What else
- 10:16Speaker 4: are you saying?
- 10:17Speaker 2: When I killed her?
- 10:18Speaker 3: Is that what you're telling me?
- 10:19Speaker 1: Yes, I'll back to our investigation into the Paige Bergfeld case.
- 10:26Speaker 1: The soccer mom of three is missing, and as police
- 10:29Speaker 1: investigate where she might be, they discover that Page was
- 10:31Speaker 1: also living a dangerous double life. Here's Nurisa Knight.
- 10:36Speaker 4: Paige Bergfeld, a mother of three young children, is missing.
- 10:40Speaker 4: Police want to speak with her and battledex husband Rob Dixon,
- 10:43Speaker 4: a man accused of domestic violence before their divorce.
- 10:47Speaker 8: You know, a lot of the leads that we got
- 10:49Speaker 8: were related to him, just because their breakup was not
- 10:52Speaker 8: the most amicable.
- 10:54Speaker 4: But Dixon was also one of those making distress calls
- 10:58Speaker 4: to Page's phone.
- 11:00Speaker 11: If you get this, please please call somebody, Please come home.
- 11:05Speaker 11: Please tell us that you're all right. Everybody's worried about you,
- 11:09Speaker 11: everybody's looking for you. Please Page, let us know that
- 11:12Speaker 11: you're okay.
- 11:14Speaker 4: Police quickly confirmed that Dixon was in Philadelphia during the
- 11:18Speaker 4: time of her disappearance. So what and who was Paige
- 11:22Speaker 4: so afraid of? Police began looking more closely at Page's
- 11:26Speaker 4: phone records and make a shocking discovery, one that will
- 11:30Speaker 4: turn this case upside down. In addition to her work
- 11:34Speaker 4: as a dance teacher, representing pampered chef and pushing nursing slings,
- 11:39Speaker 4: Paige Bergfeld was selling sex, operating a secret escort business
- 11:44Speaker 4: called Models in.
- 11:46Speaker 11: Hello, you've reached Models in Colorado's Premier Gentlemen, sirris.
- 11:51Speaker 10: Stunning news to friends and family, He said, well most
- 11:55Speaker 10: of us on the side. Did you know she was
- 11:58Speaker 10: operating an adult business, to which my response was, I'm
- 12:02Speaker 10: not sure what that means, but no, I didn't know.
- 12:08Speaker 4: Investigators wrestle with the reality of what could be a
- 12:11Speaker 4: very large number of suspects or maybe even more secrets.
- 12:16Speaker 8: Given that she was living a double life both as
- 12:18Speaker 8: a pamper chef saleswoman and as an escort. How do
- 12:21Speaker 8: we even know she's dead because she could have just disappeared.
- 12:27Speaker 4: But then on Sunday, July first, three days after Page
- 12:31Speaker 4: went missing, that theory goes up in smoke.
- 12:35Speaker 12: Hi, I'm at the corner of twenty three in logos
- 12:38Speaker 12: and there is a car on fire in the tarking lot.
- 12:41Speaker 4: Page's car is found torched. When did you realize that
- 12:47Speaker 4: you may not have her anymore?
- 12:52Speaker 10: I would say that when I saw the car and
- 12:55Speaker 10: seeing it burnt, you knew.
- 12:59Speaker 2: You knew we were in a bad spot.
- 13:02Speaker 4: While any physical evidence appears to be destroyed, detectives do
- 13:06Speaker 4: make some interesting discoveries. For instance, the driver's seat is
- 13:10Speaker 4: all the way back, even though Page is only five
- 13:13Speaker 4: foot four. When an investigator of similar height sits in
- 13:16Speaker 4: the seat, her feet can't even reach the pedals. They
- 13:20Speaker 4: also found pages day planner in the trunk, which somehow
- 13:24Speaker 4: wasn't burned. However, the last four days of entries are
- 13:28Speaker 4: torn out. Was someone else driving pages car? Someone much taller?
- 13:33Speaker 4: And did they remove any evidence of their name from
- 13:36Speaker 4: Page's records? Unwilling to give up hope, the community of
- 13:41Speaker 4: Grand Junction rallies around the Bergfeld family for a massive search.
- 13:46Speaker 10: And we probably had one hundred and fifty people that
- 13:49Speaker 10: first day, a day that was over one hundred degrees,
- 13:52Speaker 10: and people were there who none of whom I knew
- 13:56Speaker 10: I didn't live in the community, and it was an
- 13:58Speaker 10: overwhelming display of just community spirit and people who care
- 14:04Speaker 10: for one another.
- 14:06Speaker 4: The search hits paid. Heired along Highway fifty, just south
- 14:09Speaker 4: of town, a veritable trail of bread crops with Page's
- 14:13Speaker 4: fingerprints all over it. One hundred volunteers out searching found
- 14:17Speaker 4: a fifteen mile stretch of Page's personal items strewed along
- 14:21Speaker 4: Highway fifty here just south of Grand Junction.
- 14:24Speaker 8: It's very difficult to know what to make of the
- 14:27Speaker 8: strewn items. They also weren't the type of items that
- 14:30Speaker 8: Page would throw out unless she really needed to. They
- 14:32Speaker 8: were blank checks on her business account, they were her
- 14:35Speaker 8: kid's medical cards.
- 14:37Speaker 4: Was Paige kidnapped and trying to tell searchers where to
- 14:40Speaker 4: find her. Tracking dogs were brought in and alerted to
- 14:43Speaker 4: Pagees scent, but the trail ended at a river bank
- 14:47Speaker 4: with no sign of Page. Investigators needed a break, and
- 14:52Speaker 4: they were about to get it.
- 14:53Speaker 8: One of the first things we did was look at
- 14:55Speaker 8: the phone calls she had made the day she went missing.
- 14:59Speaker 4: The last call Page made was to her first husband,
- 15:02Speaker 4: Ron Beigler, at approximately nine pm, but she also received
- 15:06Speaker 4: several calls from potential clients of Models Inc.
- 15:10Speaker 2: Yeah this motel six thirty seven.
- 15:12Speaker 11: Let's just check and see if you had somebody coming
- 15:15Speaker 11: out or not.
- 15:16Speaker 2: Thank you.
- 15:17Speaker 4: Another one of those calls to Page, or Carrie as
- 15:20Speaker 4: she was known at night, was from a man named Jim,
- 15:23Speaker 4: who called while she was visiting Bigler.
- 15:27Speaker 11: Oh yeah, this is Jim, just calling this if carry
- 15:30Speaker 11: was available tonight.
- 15:33Speaker 4: Turns out Jim called Page three times the day she
- 15:36Speaker 4: went missing and twice the evening of June twenty eighth,
- 15:39Speaker 4: but all these calls were made from a prepaid track phone.
- 15:44Speaker 4: Police trace the number and find that it was purchased
- 15:47Speaker 4: two days earlier, on June twenty sixth, at a local
- 15:49Speaker 4: Walmart by the man in this surveillance video. Detectives finally
- 15:54Speaker 4: managed to find Jim, whose real name is Lester Jones,
- 15:59Speaker 4: and get this, he works across the street from where
- 16:02Speaker 4: Page's car was found burning.
- 16:04Speaker 8: That track phone in its entire history, only had five
- 16:07Speaker 8: phone calls to or from it, and the first phone
- 16:10Speaker 8: calls were placed from it to Page's Model z Inc
- 16:13Speaker 8: phone and the last one was back from the model
- 16:16Speaker 8: zincphone to that track phone. And after that the trackphone
- 16:20Speaker 8: went dead. It never made another phone call again.
- 16:24Speaker 4: A little digging reveals that Jones was convicted of first
- 16:27Speaker 4: degree sexual assault and kidnapping back in ninety nine. He's
- 16:31Speaker 4: also a big man, six foot five, the kind of
- 16:34Speaker 4: man who might drive with a car seat pushed all
- 16:37Speaker 4: the way back up. Next have to see detectives put
- 16:42Speaker 4: the screws to Lester Jones.
- 16:45Speaker 13: Does it make you nervous that we may think you
- 16:47Speaker 13: did something?
- 16:49Speaker 2: It should?
- 16:53Speaker 1: Now back to our investigation into the page Bergfeld case.
- 16:56Speaker 3: Here's Narissa Knight.
- 16:57Speaker 4: Chris page Bergfeld was a soccer man with a huge secret,
- 17:01Speaker 4: and investigators wanted to know was that secret big enough
- 17:05Speaker 4: to get her killed? A week after page Bergfeld goes missing,
- 17:09Speaker 4: the search for suspects has narrowed down to this man,
- 17:13Speaker 4: Lester Ralph Jones, a man convicted of sexual assault against
- 17:17Speaker 4: and the kidnapping of his ex wife, and.
- 17:20Speaker 8: Told her he was going to take her out to
- 17:22Speaker 8: a lake, kill her, and bury her where nobody would
- 17:26Speaker 8: ever find her.
- 17:27Speaker 4: To see, officers are anxious to have a little chat
- 17:31Speaker 4: with mister Jones.
- 17:32Speaker 13: Does it bother you at all that.
- 17:35Speaker 4: Somebody's missing and you know that somebody could be involved
- 17:39Speaker 4: in this service, and you know you used the service.
- 17:42Speaker 13: Yes, that should, sure should. Her car has found a
- 17:48Speaker 13: stone's throwaway from where you work. Does that bother you?
- 17:55Speaker 13: Doesn't bother you at all? Okay, her car is found
- 17:59Speaker 13: torched stones throwaway from where you work. That doesn't bother you.
- 18:04Speaker 13: Does it make you nervous that we may think you
- 18:05Speaker 13: did something?
- 18:08Speaker 6: No?
- 18:10Speaker 13: He should shame.
- 18:12Speaker 4: What Lester doesn't know is that cops are at this
- 18:15Speaker 4: very minute searching his workplace and talking to his wife.
- 18:19Speaker 4: Seems she was out of town the night Page went
- 18:23Speaker 4: missing on.
- 18:24Speaker 8: The week of June twenty eighth. Lester Jones was first
- 18:29Speaker 8: out of town on the weekend prior to with his
- 18:32Speaker 8: wife in California, and then he came back to Grand
- 18:35Speaker 8: Junction and she went on to Georgia.
- 18:37Speaker 4: And how about three nights after Page's disappearance when her
- 18:41Speaker 4: car was found. Bernie, what you do the.
- 18:44Speaker 13: Rest of sendulas?
- 18:48Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 18:49Speaker 13: I mean we hung around. That's good, okay, Actually that's
- 18:53Speaker 13: not it, all right. I haven't messagers out talking to
- 18:56Speaker 13: your wife, Okay, correct? You said less went to bed incorrect,
- 19:05Speaker 13: okay less, I need to be able to tell this
- 19:11Speaker 13: family usually kids where mom is good, better and different
- 19:15Speaker 13: day closure? Would you know how great day needs.
- 19:18Speaker 1: Some e closure?
- 19:21Speaker 4: Jones finally confessed that he left the house Sunday night
- 19:24Speaker 4: between nine and ten pm, the same time Page's car
- 19:28Speaker 4: was reported on fire to take care of a task
- 19:31Speaker 4: at work.
- 19:32Speaker 13: Why'd you leave the house Sunday night?
- 19:35Speaker 3: You shut the shop lights off?
- 19:37Speaker 13: How long were you done? Minimal time to come down
- 19:42Speaker 13: and go right back? Why would I.
- 19:48Speaker 4: The search of his workplace, a local RV shop reveals
- 19:52Speaker 4: more startling evidence well.
- 19:54Speaker 8: At Leicester Jones' workplace, he had a whole host of items,
- 19:58Speaker 8: such as hand written notes about other escorts, what their
- 20:03Speaker 8: bra sizes were, what type of sex they would have
- 20:07Speaker 8: if they would have.
- 20:07Speaker 3: Sex at all.
- 20:08Speaker 8: He also had the trackphone packaging for the trackphone that
- 20:12Speaker 8: was used to call Page. He had bras that happened
- 20:16Speaker 8: to be the same bra size as Page.
- 20:20Speaker 4: Other suspicious items include a stash of viagra, two male wigs,
- 20:24Speaker 4: and a food scale from pappered chef Page's employer.
- 20:28Speaker 8: There was also a gas can that was found at
- 20:31Speaker 8: his work workspace that his boss said was out of
- 20:35Speaker 8: place that shouldn't have been there, and that space is
- 20:37Speaker 8: located about five hundred yards from where that car was
- 20:40Speaker 8: found burning.
- 20:42Speaker 4: Yet, during a second interrogation, Jones continues to deny any wrongdoing.
- 20:47Speaker 2: I never met Page.
- 20:49Speaker 4: He even denies that he's the man in this surveillance
- 20:53Speaker 4: video buying the track phone.
- 20:55Speaker 1: I know fact you might have been Models Incorporated.
- 20:58Speaker 14: Should call said one with that track phone? No, sir, yes,
- 21:05Speaker 14: explain to me why the trackphone is in your trash
- 21:09Speaker 14: at your workspace.
- 21:10Speaker 2: I have no clue why it's in there.
- 21:13Speaker 13: How did that get there? I don't know.
- 21:15Speaker 8: First he denied being at the Walmart at all, Then
- 21:18Speaker 8: he said he was there to buy a soda. Ultimately,
- 21:20Speaker 8: when shown the picture, he said he was there buying
- 21:23Speaker 8: a monster cable.
- 21:24Speaker 14: How did you picture you get on a video at
- 21:26Speaker 14: the very same time the track phone is being ordered.
- 21:30Speaker 14: I can't tell you that I was in Walmart and
- 21:34Speaker 14: I bought a monster a Monage cable.
- 21:37Speaker 13: Even though the receipt comes back to.
- 21:39Speaker 1: A TRACKLOM, I did not, even though clerk members.
- 21:43Speaker 13: Used at the tatphone.
- 21:44Speaker 2: I do not buy a track So.
- 21:46Speaker 14: Videos lying clerked flying receipts.
- 21:48Speaker 4: Lying the scening nail in the coffin trap. Dogs are
- 21:53Speaker 4: taken to Page's car and alert to the scent of
- 21:56Speaker 4: Lester Jones in the front seat.
- 21:59Speaker 14: Did you guys go from right to go a pira
- 22:01Speaker 14: figew to achieved?
- 22:08Speaker 2: I didn't. I haven't been.
- 22:10Speaker 5: Anywhere with this lady.
- 22:13Speaker 4: So much evidence, yet no definitive proof that Lester Jones
- 22:17Speaker 4: was responsible for Paige Bergfeld's disappearance.
- 22:20Speaker 8: Now, everybody who knew her knew that she was a
- 22:23Speaker 8: very devoted mother and knew that there is no way
- 22:25Speaker 8: she would ever leave her kids. But convincing twelve people
- 22:28Speaker 8: beyond a reasonable doubt I'm at a jury trial that
- 22:31Speaker 8: she's deceased and that we have the right person was
- 22:34Speaker 8: just too much of a challenge.
- 22:36Speaker 4: Up next, cops have to kick Lester Jones loose. Then
- 22:40Speaker 4: police unearthed the final piece in the puzzling disappearance of
- 22:44Speaker 4: Paige Burgfeld.
- 22:48Speaker 1: Now to the conclusion of our all new investigation into
- 22:51Speaker 1: the double life of Paige Bergfeld, demure single mother by day,
- 22:54Speaker 1: high priced escord by night, And when the thirty four
- 22:57Speaker 1: year old mom of three disappears, cops wonder if one
- 23:00Speaker 1: of her clients may have taken things too far here's
- 23:03Speaker 1: Nurisa Night.
- 23:07Speaker 4: This thirty four year old mother and part time escort
- 23:11Speaker 4: went missing in two thousand and seven. Nearly five years later,
- 23:16Speaker 4: there was still no arrest in her disappearance, although police
- 23:20Speaker 4: had a strong belief that Lester Ralph Jones was their man.
- 23:25Speaker 2: I didn't touch Page, I did not kill him.
- 23:28Speaker 3: I have not heard her.
- 23:30Speaker 4: They had suspicious items at Jones's workplace. They had pages
- 23:34Speaker 4: torch sedan across the street from his job. They had
- 23:38Speaker 4: surveillance footage and phone records that showed Jones was the
- 23:42Speaker 4: last one to contact Page on a prepaid phone that
- 23:46Speaker 4: no longer exists. Yet there was one key piece of
- 23:50Speaker 4: evidence that left this convicted felon free.
- 23:54Speaker 10: Certainly you can't bring this to a conclusion a trial.
- 23:58Speaker 2: What have you?
- 24:00Speaker 10: The absence of the body certainly muddies that water.
- 24:07Speaker 4: In the spring of twenty twelve, that Muddy Water finally
- 24:11Speaker 4: gave up its secret, a hiker was exploring a dry
- 24:14Speaker 4: creek bed sixty miles south of where searchers had found
- 24:18Speaker 4: a trail of clues laid out like bread crops, pages,
- 24:22Speaker 4: personal items such as checkbooks and clothing scattered along Highway fifty.
- 24:27Speaker 8: A hiker in the well sculpt area just happened by
- 24:30Speaker 8: a human skull, and when they unearthed it, it had
- 24:35Speaker 8: duct tape that was sort of around the jawline area
- 24:38Speaker 8: and around the back of the head.
- 24:42Speaker 4: A team of forensic examiners soon find more bones strewn
- 24:46Speaker 4: across a mile stretch of the creek, and they quickly
- 24:49Speaker 4: determine that they do indeed belong to Page Bergfeld, even
- 24:54Speaker 4: after all this time. It's a devastating blow.
- 24:59Speaker 10: I would tell you without a doubt, a piece of me,
- 25:03Speaker 10: I mean, in terms of my emotions, A piece of
- 25:06Speaker 10: me is missing.
- 25:08Speaker 2: Part of my life is gone.
- 25:10Speaker 5: There is no possibility of having her in my life again.
- 25:17Speaker 4: For Prosecutor Dan Rubinstein, the crime scene paints a gruesome
- 25:21Speaker 4: yet incomplete picture.
- 25:23Speaker 8: The reality is is we don't know exactly how Page died.
- 25:26Speaker 8: What we do know is that she was kidnapped, and
- 25:28Speaker 8: we know that because of the items that were strewn
- 25:31Speaker 8: down Highway fifteen, and we know that because of the
- 25:33Speaker 8: duct tape. You don't duct tape a person who's already deceased,
- 25:36Speaker 8: And ultimately, through a mountain of circumstantial evidence, we're able
- 25:41Speaker 8: to determine that Lester Jones was the only person who
- 25:44Speaker 8: could have done it.
- 25:46Speaker 4: After years of not knowing, Page's family was finally able
- 25:50Speaker 4: to look at her accused killer in the eyes at
- 25:52Speaker 4: his trial, But the jury was about to surprise everyone.
- 25:57Speaker 4: In September of twenty sixteen, Jones is another break. Believe
- 26:01Speaker 4: it or not, it looks as if he may walk
- 26:03Speaker 4: free again. It's a hung jury, nine to three in
- 26:07Speaker 4: favor of guilt. But the dog of DA wasn't about
- 26:11Speaker 4: to let this case go.
- 26:13Speaker 10: I think a lot of das with a less bunk
- 26:18Speaker 10: and backbone would have said, you know, well, why don't
- 26:23Speaker 10: we wait and see if some new evidence comes in
- 26:26Speaker 10: and duck the case.
- 26:27Speaker 4: What made you so passionate about this?
- 26:30Speaker 8: Every life matters, And it bothered me the idea that
- 26:33Speaker 8: people might think that because Page had this double life,
- 26:38Speaker 8: that she didn't deserve justice.
- 26:39Speaker 15: Please rise for a jury.
- 26:41Speaker 4: In November of twenty sixteen, Rubinstein takes another shot his
- 26:46Speaker 4: first witness, Page's daughter, Jess, now eighteen. She was the
- 26:51Speaker 4: child who left tearful please on her mother's voicemail nine
- 26:55Speaker 4: years earlier.
- 26:57Speaker 9: Era on you are really really me? You would be
- 27:01Speaker 9: that way, Lord Dark any back?
- 27:05Speaker 8: When was the last time you saw your mom?
- 27:08Speaker 6: The last time I saw my mother was on June
- 27:12Speaker 6: twenty eighth, before she went to work. She said that
- 27:19Speaker 6: she would be back around dinner time. My mom was
- 27:24Speaker 6: a very kind lady. She she did everything for her kids.
- 27:30Speaker 6: We even we all slept in her bed and her
- 27:32Speaker 6: bedroom because we just all loved to be around her.
- 27:36Speaker 2: And that was one of the low moments in the trial.
- 27:39Speaker 4: Jones's wife, a reluctant witness, gives key testimony about the
- 27:44Speaker 4: night pages car was found on fire.
- 27:47Speaker 3: Did he leave at any point Sunday evening?
- 27:49Speaker 2: Yes? He did.
- 27:50Speaker 3: Did he tell you why he was leaving?
- 27:52Speaker 4: He had to turn off the lights.
- 27:54Speaker 5: He thought he had maybe left them on at the
- 27:57Speaker 5: shop where he worked.
- 27:59Speaker 3: Was it suspicious for you when he left that evening?
- 28:03Speaker 6: Yes?
- 28:04Speaker 3: Can you explain to the jury why that was suspicious
- 28:06Speaker 3: to you? I had suspected him of.
- 28:12Speaker 4: Other women, and I thought he was going to meet
- 28:17Speaker 4: someone else. Another damning tidbit came from a recorded phone
- 28:22Speaker 4: call between police and Lester Jones regarding his impounded vehicles.
- 28:27Speaker 8: One of the big surprises that came out of this
- 28:31Speaker 8: investigation was a phone call that went from then Sergeant
- 28:36Speaker 8: Art Smith, who was trying to return his vehicles to
- 28:39Speaker 8: mister Jones, and he placed a simple phone call. And
- 28:42Speaker 8: what Art was trying to figure out was how do
- 28:44Speaker 8: I get these vehicles to you?
- 28:46Speaker 15: If you need us to bring one to your come
- 28:49Speaker 15: and pick one of you.
- 28:49Speaker 2: If we can do that for you, I don't thank so.
- 28:55Speaker 4: I'm mister Jones, I'm not following you, he asked me.
- 29:01Speaker 2: I'man urilidy.
- 29:04Speaker 11: I'm sorry you asked me where I should bury body?
- 29:09Speaker 2: When did I ask you that?
- 29:13Speaker 8: The jury had a question at one point during their deliberations,
- 29:15Speaker 8: and the question was can we hear that phone call again?
- 29:18Speaker 10: And when the closing came, I thought there was no
- 29:22Speaker 10: doubt that Lester Ralph Jones murdered my daughter.
- 29:27Speaker 15: And I've been informed by the bailiff that our jury
- 29:29Speaker 15: has reached a verdict.
- 29:31Speaker 4: After five weeks the moment, Frank Bergfeld has been waiting
- 29:35Speaker 4: nine and a half years for.
- 29:37Speaker 15: Jury verdict count number one charge of murder in the
- 29:40Speaker 15: first degree felony murder. We the jury find the defendant,
- 29:44Speaker 15: Lester Ralph Jones, guilty of count one murder and the
- 29:49Speaker 15: first degree.
- 29:50Speaker 4: The sentencing is just as satisfying life in prison.
- 29:57Speaker 2: It was.
- 30:00Speaker 5: Popo elation that he was really going to take the
- 30:04Speaker 5: blame for this, and that we had an answer.
- 30:09Speaker 10: I'd say, this is a life that God put on
- 30:12Speaker 10: the earth that he absolutely wasted, and frankly, it would
- 30:16Speaker 10: have been better if they had skipped his name when
- 30:21Speaker 10: God decided who to place on earth. He has contributed nothing,
- 30:25Speaker 10: and all he is is a burden on society.
- 30:29Speaker 8: It really was, you know, a case that took many,
- 30:33Speaker 8: many years to put together.
- 30:35Speaker 10: The highlight of being around Page was seen how radiant
- 30:38Speaker 10: she would be around her children. When I'm around her children,
- 30:44Speaker 10: I feel this elation. But then it's like checked because
- 30:49Speaker 10: I realized she isn't here to appreciate it.
- 30:55Speaker 1: Jones continues to maintain his innocence, and his lawyers have
- 30:58Speaker 1: promised to appeal the fiction.
- 31:02Speaker 13: Up next Hard to Do It?
- 31:04Speaker 1: Inside the mind of an accused madman? Was he an
- 31:08Speaker 1: angry young man? An all new interview with the father
- 31:11Speaker 1: of the suspect arrested in the death of New York
- 31:14Speaker 1: City jogger Karina Vitrano. How did his DNA get on
- 31:17Speaker 1: her fingernails, her phone, and her name? The disturbing message
- 31:21Speaker 1: he reportedly had for all the girls in his high school.
- 31:24Speaker 1: Why detectives think he picked Vitrano.
- 31:28Speaker 2: That's next?
- 31:32Speaker 3: All right?
- 31:32Speaker 1: Now, let's get to a story still dominating headlines here
- 31:35Speaker 1: in New York and arrest in the death of jogger
- 31:38Speaker 1: Karina Vitrano, murdering your return? Is this the face of evil?
- 31:47Speaker 13: Hard to do it?
- 31:47Speaker 1: Did this twenty year old man commit one of the
- 31:50Speaker 1: most savage and senseless crimes New York has ever seen?
- 31:54Speaker 1: The assault and murder for which he's been arrested beyond
- 31:58Speaker 1: brutal and now really think it's Chris Hansen and Crime
- 32:04Speaker 1: Watch Daily is on the ground searching for answers from
- 32:07Speaker 1: the people who should know the accused killer best, his
- 32:11Speaker 1: own parents.
- 32:12Speaker 7: I know he's been accused of this crime, and I
- 32:15Speaker 7: wanted to get some perspective from his family.
- 32:20Speaker 1: These are the last haunting images of Karina Vitrano, captured
- 32:24Speaker 1: on a security camera, just minutes before she was murdered
- 32:27Speaker 1: on a remote jogging trail. Crime Watch Daily was the
- 32:30Speaker 1: first to bring you this exclusive video of that faithful
- 32:33Speaker 1: August second a day. Karina's father, Phil.
- 32:36Speaker 3: Will never forget.
- 32:38Speaker 1: What strikes me out of all these pictures is her
- 32:41Speaker 1: incredible zest for life.
- 32:43Speaker 16: There was so much in her and she achieved so
- 32:47Speaker 16: much as she would have achieved so much more, that
- 32:50Speaker 16: this guy was the limit.
- 32:53Speaker 1: Karina, described by friends and family as the life of
- 32:56Speaker 1: the party, was found dead along this jogging trail near
- 32:59Speaker 1: JFK Airport. She had been dragged into the tall weeds
- 33:02Speaker 1: and strangled, left face down. Karina's dad usually ran with her,
- 33:07Speaker 1: but he was nursing a back injury that terrible day.
- 33:10Speaker 3: Does that haunt you a little bit? Of course it does.
- 33:13Speaker 1: Shortly after the shocking murder, New York Chief of Detectives
- 33:16Speaker 1: Robert Boyce sat down with me for his first national
- 33:19Speaker 1: interview to discuss the case. Give me a sense for
- 33:22Speaker 1: the injuries Karina.
- 33:23Speaker 17: Summer facial injuries.
- 33:25Speaker 2: She also had bruising on her Bobby.
- 33:28Speaker 3: What does that tell you she put not to go
- 33:30Speaker 3: into those ways.
- 33:33Speaker 1: At the time, Boyce told me they had a DNA
- 33:35Speaker 1: profile of the killer based on samples found on Karina's back,
- 33:39Speaker 1: under her fingernails, and on her cell phone. And yet
- 33:44Speaker 1: it doesn't hit on any database.
- 33:45Speaker 6: Now.
- 33:46Speaker 1: It was a lack of answers Karina's father, Phil found
- 33:49Speaker 1: nearly unbearable, especially considering his role in the case.
- 33:53Speaker 3: You found your daughter, I did.
- 33:58Speaker 2: With the help of the p D.
- 34:00Speaker 1: As a parent, I have a hard time even getting
- 34:04Speaker 1: my arms around that.
- 34:05Speaker 16: I think as a parent, you would rather you find
- 34:10Speaker 16: your child than someone else. It's the last act of
- 34:16Speaker 16: protection you can give you a child.
- 34:20Speaker 1: After the murder, police did release this sketch of a
- 34:22Speaker 1: man in a wool cap who was in the location
- 34:25Speaker 1: around the time Karina was killed. But still nothing.
- 34:30Speaker 7: This is going to be seen around the country.
- 34:33Speaker 3: What message do you have for people?
- 34:34Speaker 2: Well, looking for a break. We need a break in
- 34:36Speaker 2: a case.
- 34:38Speaker 1: Now finally that break has come.
- 34:41Speaker 2: This is a very good day for justice in New
- 34:43Speaker 2: York City.
- 34:43Speaker 17: Yesterday evening, Channell Lewis, a twenty year old mal who
- 34:46Speaker 17: resides in East New York, Brooklyn, was taken into custody
- 34:49Speaker 17: and connection with the August two, twenty sixteen murder of
- 34:52Speaker 17: Karina Patrano.
- 34:55Speaker 1: As it turns out, when police were going back through
- 34:57Speaker 1: their files, they uncovered a nine to one to one
- 34:59Speaker 1: call months before the murder reports of the same man,
- 35:03Speaker 1: Chanel Lewis, lurking suspiciously near the area Karina was killed.
- 35:07Speaker 1: In fact, the original nine to one to one call
- 35:09Speaker 1: came from one of the investigators working the case, who
- 35:12Speaker 1: after remembering the incident, helped track Lewis down to his
- 35:15Speaker 1: mother's house and bring him in for questioning.
- 35:18Speaker 17: We spoke to him that night, that was Thursday night.
- 35:23Speaker 17: He freely gave a buckle squab of his DNA to us.
- 35:26Speaker 17: Within two days we had a hit. You gotta remember
- 35:30Speaker 17: Karina helped us identify this person. She had the DNA
- 35:33Speaker 17: in under her nails, she had touched DNA on her back,
- 35:37Speaker 17: and it was more DNA on a cell phone.
- 35:39Speaker 1: But even without the DNA match, it seems police had
- 35:42Speaker 1: enough to make an arrest.
- 35:43Speaker 17: Lewis was interviewed by detectives and made detailed incriminating statements
- 35:48Speaker 17: and admissions.
- 35:49Speaker 2: Charges are now penning.
- 35:51Speaker 1: But do police really have the right man the suspects?
- 35:55Speaker 1: Sister says no, telling reporters, I think hops framed him
- 36:00Speaker 1: because he's a black person. They couldn't find anyone else
- 36:03Speaker 1: to pin this on, so they pinned it on my brother.
- 36:06Speaker 1: But police remain resolute, saying Lewis told them in a
- 36:09Speaker 1: videotape confession that he was out walking and in a
- 36:12Speaker 1: quote bad mood when he came across Karina and snapped.
- 36:17Speaker 17: We don't believe he knew her at all.
- 36:18Speaker 2: It appears to be a.
- 36:19Speaker 1: Chance encounter, but we wanted to understand how a young
- 36:23Speaker 1: man with no previous criminal history could have suddenly done
- 36:26Speaker 1: what he's accused of it.
- 36:29Speaker 7: It's Chris Hansen.
- 36:31Speaker 1: I'm a reporter for Crime Watch Daily. It's a television show,
- 36:34Speaker 1: and I'm looking for Chanell's mom. What do you want well,
- 36:38Speaker 1: I would like to talk to you about your son.
- 36:39Speaker 1: Right away, Chanell's mom made it clear she had little
- 36:42Speaker 1: to say about her son anyway.
- 36:44Speaker 13: I don't want to speak to you.
- 36:46Speaker 4: I wish to get a head off on the property.
- 36:48Speaker 2: I know this is a difficult time.
- 36:49Speaker 13: I can only imagine you want to speak to you,
- 36:52Speaker 13: but you.
- 36:52Speaker 7: See what I'm getting at.
- 36:53Speaker 1: I think it's important to know both sides of the story.
- 36:58Speaker 7: All right, thank you for your time.
- 37:02Speaker 1: There would be no statement from the mom with whom
- 37:05Speaker 1: he lived most recently, so then we went looking for
- 37:08Speaker 1: the father and before long.
- 37:10Speaker 7: Richard, I'm Chris Hansen with Crime Watch Daly. It's a
- 37:13Speaker 7: television show and we're working on a story on Chanelle
- 37:17Speaker 7: and I wanted to.
- 37:18Speaker 13: Let's talk to you. What is that about him?
- 37:21Speaker 1: I just want to ask you.
- 37:22Speaker 7: I don't know, I mean, I know he's been accused
- 37:24Speaker 7: of this crime, and I wanted to get some perspective
- 37:27Speaker 7: from his family, and we came to talk to you.
- 37:30Speaker 3: Do you hear what you had to say?
- 37:32Speaker 2: Does tell me?
- 37:34Speaker 13: Okay?
- 37:35Speaker 1: To our surprise, Chanell's dad invited us inside because our
- 37:39Speaker 1: cameras got into position. What he had to say stood
- 37:42Speaker 1: in start contrast to the crime for which Chanell has
- 37:45Speaker 1: been accused.
- 37:46Speaker 4: Oh, this guy him as a wonderful young man, a
- 37:50Speaker 4: wonderful and what way wonderful and just a good guy,
- 37:55Speaker 4: just a good guy.
- 37:56Speaker 1: But reports say otherwise. Police sources that five years earlier,
- 38:01Speaker 1: when Chanelle was just fifteen, he allegedly said he wanted
- 38:04Speaker 1: to bring a knife to school to quote, stab all
- 38:07Speaker 1: the girls. Why would he lash out?
- 38:11Speaker 2: Let me said? Lash out? What do you mean?
- 38:13Speaker 7: Attack Karina Viachana?
- 38:15Speaker 2: Why would he do that? Why would he do? I
- 38:17Speaker 2: don't think he would.
- 38:19Speaker 1: You don't think he did.
- 38:20Speaker 2: I don't think he did.
- 38:21Speaker 1: But how did his DNA get on her fingernails, her phone,
- 38:25Speaker 1: and her neck?
- 38:28Speaker 11: Oh?
- 38:28Speaker 3: That's what?
- 38:29Speaker 1: He had no answer to that other than to stick
- 38:31Speaker 1: by his son. Do you think your son is capable
- 38:36Speaker 1: of murder?
- 38:37Speaker 11: Sir?
- 38:38Speaker 3: I don't see how he would have.
- 38:41Speaker 1: Was your son mentally disturbed? I'm not uncertain, and that's
