Transcript
- 0:07Speaker 1: Crime comes in all shapes and sizes, from theft to
- 0:11Speaker 1: murder to child abandonment, which is exactly what takes place
- 0:15Speaker 1: in today's case. But that's a broad term, as it
- 0:19Speaker 1: too can come in all shapes and sizes. It can
- 0:22Speaker 1: mean many things. But trust me when I say, in
- 0:25Speaker 1: the case of Jayleen Candelario, it is about as bad
- 0:29Speaker 1: as it can possibly get.
- 0:32Speaker 2: My name's Ben, I'm Nicole, and you're listening to Wicked
- 0:36Speaker 2: and Grim.
- 0:36Speaker 1: A true crime podcast.
- 0:40Speaker 3: The following podcast and material intended for at your audience
- 0:47Speaker 3: listener discretion. O.
- 1:08Speaker 1: Guess what what I have something to tell you.
- 1:12Speaker 2: Is that it?
- 1:13Speaker 1: That's it. That's pretty important to say.
- 1:17Speaker 2: You're drinking your favorite beer all.
- 1:19Speaker 1: Time, thousand peaks thanks to Trench Brewing, not sponsored but Bailey.
- 1:24Speaker 2: If you're listening, yeah, just keep making that forever.
- 1:28Speaker 1: Always always.
- 1:30Speaker 2: I actually like the logo or the yeah, the label.
- 1:35Speaker 1: Yeah, it's kind of cool that ombrace sky look to it.
- 1:39Speaker 1: It's pretty dope.
- 1:41Speaker 2: You might need a bevy of some sorts. I'm drinking.
- 1:44Speaker 2: Look at me, I'm actually drinking hydration tablets in my water.
- 1:48Speaker 1: Oh well, good for you. Stay hydrated. Do the adult thing,
- 1:51Speaker 1: because you've been complaining about how you're dying from the job.
- 1:54Speaker 2: I am about as sore as hell, and then so like,
- 1:58Speaker 2: I was so sore my lower body because on Tuesday
- 2:00Speaker 2: I did a lower body class and then today I'm
- 2:02Speaker 2: a complete idiot and went and did an upper body class.
- 2:05Speaker 2: So tomorrow I'm just gonna be fucked.
- 2:07Speaker 1: All around whole body. You get me be done, And
- 2:10Speaker 1: I have.
- 2:10Speaker 2: A wedding that I'm shooting on Saturday. It might not
- 2:13Speaker 2: be a good time.
- 2:14Speaker 1: Yeah, well, if you drink trench thousand peaks with beer,
- 2:17Speaker 1: it might alleviate some pain. Drink trench oh man. Yeah, yeah,
- 2:23Speaker 1: you're you're gonna You're gonna kill it though you always
- 2:25Speaker 1: do it.
- 2:25Speaker 2: Yeah, it'll be fine. It's like I become human at weddings,
- 2:30Speaker 2: like I don't. I just like don't really have needs.
- 2:32Speaker 2: I don't have to pee, I don't really need.
- 2:34Speaker 1: It's called superhuman. There you go, Yeah, you get in
- 2:36Speaker 1: the zone. Yeah, but Nicole's right, you might want to
- 2:39Speaker 1: drink for today's case because it is a doozy. It's
- 2:43Speaker 1: not the most graphic, but it does involve, as I mentioned,
- 2:47Speaker 1: child abandonment, So.
- 2:50Speaker 2: It's gonna piss you off because you give me a
- 2:52Speaker 2: little bit of an overview, just a little bit.
- 2:54Speaker 1: Like elevator pitch sort of thing.
- 2:56Speaker 2: Yeah, we're going to the gym. I think you needed
- 2:58Speaker 2: to kind of get it off your chest a bit.
- 3:00Speaker 2: And I was just like pissed driving to the gym, Like,
- 3:03Speaker 2: just pissed.
- 3:04Speaker 1: How often do I actually have to walk away from
- 3:06Speaker 1: my computer to yeah, like I break from working, but
- 3:10Speaker 1: to take a break from the case while researching, walk
- 3:13Speaker 1: away from my computer get a breather from what the
- 3:15Speaker 1: fuck is happening and what I'm reading that happened today?
- 3:19Speaker 2: So we're really really in for it here.
- 3:21Speaker 1: Yeah, I was mad. I was fuman. So you might
- 3:25Speaker 1: want to drink today? Yeah, drink?
- 3:28Speaker 2: Yeah, it doesn't be alcohol. It could be a hydration
- 3:31Speaker 2: it could.
- 3:31Speaker 1: Hey, we've gone over this before. A drink does not
- 3:34Speaker 1: necessarily mean alcohol. A drink is a soothing beverage. That
- 3:38Speaker 1: could be coffee, that could be tea, it could be water,
- 3:41Speaker 1: because hey, maybe you do need to.
- 3:43Speaker 2: Hydrate or maybe is that going to help me?
- 3:45Speaker 1: Maybe? Or maybe it is a trench thousand peaks with beer. Heck,
- 3:51Speaker 1: not sponsored.
- 3:54Speaker 2: This. We should almost be sponsored. We should be, we
- 3:57Speaker 2: should be.
- 3:58Speaker 1: But anyways, I got my get the ready. I'm gonna
- 4:01Speaker 1: need it, so I'm gonna need you to pipe in
- 4:03Speaker 1: a couple times to get me an opportunity to actually
- 4:05Speaker 1: drink it today. You got it, because that's the thing
- 4:07Speaker 1: about presenting case.
- 4:08Speaker 2: I don't really I know, you don't really get to
- 4:10Speaker 2: super enjoy the bevy.
- 4:11Speaker 1: No a little bit. I get a couple of SIPs,
- 4:13Speaker 1: but then after the podcast, I'm usually down the rest,
- 4:15Speaker 1: but I have a feeling I'm going to want to
- 4:17Speaker 1: finish this can by the end of this case. So
- 4:19Speaker 1: fair enough, here we go. Let's dive into this case.
- 4:22Speaker 1: This is a case of as I mentioned, Jaylen Candellero.
- 4:26Speaker 1: But to get into her story, we first have to
- 4:28Speaker 1: start off with Crystal Crystal Candellero.
- 4:32Speaker 3: So.
- 4:32Speaker 1: Crystal was born on September eleventh, nineteen ninety one. She
- 4:36Speaker 1: was born in Ecuador, but would eventually move to the
- 4:39Speaker 1: United States in twenty sixteen when she was twenty five
- 4:42Speaker 1: years old. Not a lot is really known as to
- 4:45Speaker 1: why her and her family made the move to North America,
- 4:48Speaker 1: but most likely it was the promise of everything that
- 4:50Speaker 1: the US had to offer as far as you know,
- 4:53Speaker 1: a very developed country and the classic you know, quote
- 4:55Speaker 1: unquote American dream Right may have played a role, but
- 5:01Speaker 1: it's hard to say. That's strictly speculation on my part.
- 5:03Speaker 1: But they moved, they made the move, and here they are.
- 5:07Speaker 1: So when they came to North America, Crystal, her sister,
- 5:10Speaker 1: and her two parents would move into a three bedroom,
- 5:13Speaker 1: one bathroom home in Cleveland, Ohio. The house is a
- 5:16Speaker 1: quaint little blue home with some nice white trim out front.
- 5:20Speaker 1: On the front of the house was a covered patio
- 5:22Speaker 1: that held the front door entrance. It was nice, it
- 5:25Speaker 1: was cute, it was fitting in with the other houses
- 5:27Speaker 1: in the surrounding neighborhood. And the neighborhood was called the
- 5:30Speaker 1: Cuttle Neighborhood. Oh my, that's cute, not like Cuddle. It's
- 5:34Speaker 1: c U D D E l l okay like cadell
- 5:38Speaker 1: or it's not like cut.
- 5:40Speaker 2: That's a cute little neighborhood.
- 5:42Speaker 1: Yeah, it sounds sounds cuddly, that's for sure. But now
- 5:45Speaker 1: the neighborhood is a resident of the residential There we
- 5:50Speaker 1: Go area located on the west side of Cleveland, Ohio.
- 5:53Speaker 1: Now it was named after the German immigrant Frank E. Cuddle,
- 5:56Speaker 1: so it's actually his name, who was an architect. There's
- 6:00Speaker 1: only one D in Cuttaege just realized because his name
- 6:02Speaker 1: actually has one D. Yeah. So he was an architect
- 6:06Speaker 1: who made significant contributions to the city's development in the
- 6:09Speaker 1: late nineteenth and earlie twentieth century. Now, this neighborhood has
- 6:13Speaker 1: a rich history and a diverse community, but like many
- 6:16Speaker 1: neighborhoods in Cleveland, it has faced economic challenges, including poverty.
- 6:22Speaker 1: I'm stumbling today. I think it's anticipation on what's to
- 6:24Speaker 1: come in.
- 6:24Speaker 2: This case, yeah, deep breast, thank you.
- 6:26Speaker 1: Yes, including poverty, unemployment, and housing instability. However, there have
- 6:32Speaker 1: been ongoing efforts by community organizations and the city to
- 6:35Speaker 1: revitalize the area, you know, improve public safety, attract new residents,
- 6:39Speaker 1: and investments, all that sort of good stuff. Right. Still, though,
- 6:43Speaker 1: the Candelario family kept their chin up and pursued their
- 6:47Speaker 1: new life in America in the Cuttle neighborhood.
- 6:50Speaker 2: Okay.
- 6:51Speaker 1: Now, in regards to Crystal specifically, before the move occurred,
- 6:55Speaker 1: she had actually gotten a bachelor's degree in education and
- 6:59Speaker 1: now began and in this new country, you know, trying
- 7:02Speaker 1: to eagerly use it. She began applying to be a
- 7:06Speaker 1: substitute teacher and to gain her substitute teacher's license, and
- 7:09Speaker 1: she was applying consistently since the year twenty twenty. As
- 7:13Speaker 1: a result, she would eventually start work as a substitute
- 7:16Speaker 1: teacher at an elementary school called Citizens Leadership Academy in
- 7:20Speaker 1: December of twenty twenty two, so two years ago. Okay,
- 7:27Speaker 1: so before she began working consistently, though, Crystal found herself,
- 7:30Speaker 1: like many others, looking for love, and it would eventually
- 7:33Speaker 1: start with an online relationship with a man in twenty
- 7:36Speaker 1: twenty one, just a year prior before her actually working
- 7:39Speaker 1: at the elementary school, and she found love with this
- 7:42Speaker 1: man by the name of Henry Garcia. However, Henry did
- 7:46Speaker 1: not live near Crystal whatsoever. He didn't even live in
- 7:48Speaker 1: the US. Whatever, you're staring at my beard going on here,
- 7:52Speaker 1: it's making me nervous.
- 7:53Speaker 2: No, sorry, I'm just like very angry because yeah, I
- 7:58Speaker 2: just like connected some thing here and I just yeah.
- 8:02Speaker 1: Yeah, I think I know what to talk about. We'll
- 8:04Speaker 1: touch on that, I know.
- 8:05Speaker 2: Yeah, that's why I'm just not saying much, okay, And
- 8:08Speaker 2: sorry for staring awkwardly at your being.
- 8:10Speaker 1: I'm looking at you and you're just staring at my.
- 8:12Speaker 2: Beard as well, because I'm just like, what the okay.
- 8:15Speaker 1: I'm backing up a bit so we can get back
- 8:17Speaker 1: on track here. So, before she began working consistently, though,
- 8:20Speaker 1: Crystal found herself like many others, looking for love and
- 8:23Speaker 1: would eventually start an online relationship with a man in
- 8:26Speaker 1: twenty twenty one by the name of Henry Garcia. Now,
- 8:29Speaker 1: Henry did not live near Crystal. He lived back in Ecuador,
- 8:33Speaker 1: where Crystal was actually from. So throughout their online relationship,
- 8:37Speaker 1: the desire to meet up in person, you know, of course,
- 8:39Speaker 1: came to the table and get greater and greater as
- 8:43Speaker 1: time went on. So the two made some effort to travel,
- 8:46Speaker 1: and they met up in the Dominican Republic for a
- 8:48Speaker 1: little getaway to see each other. Right, a little bit
- 8:51Speaker 1: of travel, a little bit of fun, a little bit
- 8:52Speaker 1: of vacation, a little bit of drinking who knows what,
- 8:55Speaker 1: and a little bit of you know, a little bit
- 8:59Speaker 1: a couple time.
- 9:00Speaker 2: Okay.
- 9:01Speaker 1: So when Crystal got back to the USA, it didn't
- 9:03Speaker 1: take long for her to realize that the visits she
- 9:05Speaker 1: just had with her boyfriend resulted in her getting pregnant.
- 9:09Speaker 1: Their relationship as a couple wouldn't last, though, he reportedly
- 9:13Speaker 1: became abusive after learning about a pregnancy. I don't know
- 9:16Speaker 1: if it was like because of the pregnancy or just
- 9:19Speaker 1: because they like were getting to know each other too much.
- 9:22Speaker 1: Like the relationship developed and his true color started showing,
- 9:24Speaker 1: but he began getting abusive in that time, so she
- 9:28Speaker 1: stopped going to see him, traveling to see him as well,
- 9:31Speaker 1: and the relationship ended like straight.
- 9:34Speaker 2: Up, okay, well yeah, fair enough.
- 9:36Speaker 1: Yeah, And I mean Crystal was in another country after all, too,
- 9:40Speaker 1: so it left her not only as a single mother.
- 9:43Speaker 1: Even if this relationship wasn't sour, she was still like, hey,
- 9:47Speaker 1: I'm in another country, you're in another country. I'm pregnant.
- 9:51Speaker 1: Even if we're making this work, I'm still kind of
- 9:53Speaker 1: just a single mother here, right, Yeah. So without a partner,
- 9:56Speaker 1: she gave birth to her daughter, Jayleen Candelario, on January
- 10:00Speaker 1: twenty sixth, twenty twenty two. With a new child, life
- 10:05Speaker 1: can quickly change, and it can become a very big
- 10:08Speaker 1: struggle for many new parents, especially when attempting to navigate
- 10:11Speaker 1: the waters of parenthood solo. But to say that Crystal
- 10:15Speaker 1: did do her best would unfortunately be an understatement.
- 10:18Speaker 2: Oh yeah, yeah, no shit, no shit, you.
- 10:22Speaker 1: Know, we haven't even got there yet.
- 10:25Speaker 2: Chill, Okay, sorry, this is gonna be a hard one
- 10:30Speaker 2: for me. Like, I'm know I'm supposed to be chatty,
- 10:32Speaker 2: but it's like, yeah, okay, struggling already here.
- 10:36Speaker 1: It's all good. Well. Scrolling through crystal social media pages,
- 10:40Speaker 1: it was hard to tell that she had a daughter
- 10:42Speaker 1: at all. It was filled with selfies of herself putting
- 10:44Speaker 1: on new clothes and posing in the mirror or whatever
- 10:47Speaker 1: it was, or even photos when she was traveling and
- 10:49Speaker 1: exploring new places because she particularly loved to travel, so.
- 10:53Speaker 2: She didn't really post photos of like daughter.
- 10:56Speaker 1: Not so much. And I'm not saying like anyone needs
- 10:58Speaker 1: to have their baby take over their Instagram feed by
- 11:00Speaker 1: any means. It just seems like it tends to happen
- 11:04Speaker 1: naturally more often than not, that people start uploading a
- 11:06Speaker 1: lot of photos of their kids, and that didn't happen
- 11:08Speaker 1: with her.
- 11:09Speaker 2: Well, she could be I mean, I don't know, probably not,
- 11:12Speaker 2: but like she could be, a lot of parents choose
- 11:14Speaker 2: not to post their kids online exactly right.
- 11:17Speaker 1: I'm not judging whatsoever. It just might have been an
- 11:20Speaker 1: indication of what's to come to see. Yeah, in Cristel's case,
- 11:23Speaker 1: there was very few photos for her daughter that were
- 11:26Speaker 1: being posted. Okay, Now it was obvious outside of social
- 11:30Speaker 1: media though, that Crystal didn't want her life to really
- 11:33Speaker 1: make a shift into parenthood. She was still too caught
- 11:35Speaker 1: up with herself and what she wanted to do, and
- 11:38Speaker 1: primarily that travel life. Okay, so we reported incidents in
- 11:43Speaker 1: late twenty twenty two. When Jalen was almost one year old,
- 11:47Speaker 1: Kristen had a friend or neighbor, an acquaintance sort of thing.
- 11:51Speaker 1: This neighbor was kind of a friend, acquaintance whatever. Right,
- 11:54Speaker 1: She had this neighbor friend babysit for the weekend. So
- 11:58Speaker 1: Crystal was going to go off, you know, have a
- 12:01Speaker 1: kid free weekend, and this person was going to look
- 12:03Speaker 1: after it, no problem, catch up with you on Monday.
- 12:05Speaker 2: Kind of thing, right, Yeah, I mean that's that sounds nice, right.
- 12:08Speaker 1: Oh yeah, no for a parent, so oh yeah, all
- 12:10Speaker 1: the power to you. Totally definitely not judging, but I
- 12:13Speaker 1: am judging here with what comes next. Because the weekend
- 12:15Speaker 1: went fine and Jalen was being looked after and everything,
- 12:19Speaker 1: But when the day came for Crystal to be picked
- 12:22Speaker 1: or to pick her daughter up, yeah, she never showed up. Okay,
- 12:27Speaker 1: calls were made, messages were sent, but Crystal never answered.
- 12:31Speaker 2: That's brutal.
- 12:32Speaker 1: In fact, reported weeks went by with Crystal avoiding any
- 12:37Speaker 1: sort of contact from the babysitter. Weeks weeks she just
- 12:41Speaker 1: left her daughter in their care with no communication, far
- 12:45Speaker 1: longer than anticipated. And this babysitter was like leaving messages
- 12:48Speaker 1: like I can't afford the formula to be feeding your baby,
- 12:52Speaker 1: Like I literally cannot afford to go buy it right now,
- 12:55Speaker 1: Like what can you? Like, what the hell's going on here?
- 12:58Speaker 2: Well, yeah, you're expecting you're kind of like doing a
- 13:00Speaker 2: favor for like a weekend, right and I'm sure she
- 13:03Speaker 2: had supplied, you know, what the baby needed. Yeah, but
- 13:07Speaker 2: then to be gone for freaking weeks.
- 13:10Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 13:11Speaker 2: Wow.
- 13:12Speaker 1: Now, I don't know how long quote unquote weeks is exactly.
- 13:17Speaker 1: Whether it was two weeks, a week and a half,
- 13:18Speaker 1: three weeks, I'm not sure, but I do know quote
- 13:21Speaker 1: unquote weeks, it was the timeline, and it was long
- 13:24Speaker 1: enough that Jaylen actually began, sorry, Jayleen, sorry, I actually
- 13:30Speaker 1: began calling the babysitter like Mama.
- 13:33Speaker 2: WHOA really? Okay, Well, that's that's like a pretty extended
- 13:37Speaker 2: amount of time, you think I.
- 13:38Speaker 1: Would assume that's a very long time. If that's the
- 13:41Speaker 1: case that's actually occurring.
- 13:43Speaker 2: Wow, that's so sad.
- 13:45Speaker 1: Now, this apparently was not uncommon behavior, and I mean
- 13:48Speaker 1: for this extent maybe, I mean sure, like the weeks, Yeah,
- 13:52Speaker 1: maybe it was uncommon. But Jayleen would be left with
- 13:56Speaker 1: neighbors and family members often to be looked after. Neighbors
- 13:59Speaker 1: would babysit when she went to work, and Jayleen would
- 14:02Speaker 1: be left hours longer than she was supposed to, hours
- 14:06Speaker 1: longer than they were told, and they were just like,
- 14:08Speaker 1: what's going on? When are you showing up? Where are you?
- 14:10Speaker 1: And should like come dragging her her ass back? Finally
- 14:13Speaker 1: sort of thing right at the last hour sort of situation.
- 14:17Speaker 1: And one news interview actually with a neighbor showed how
- 14:21Speaker 1: they claimed it was Jaylen's grandma who generally looked after her,
- 14:24Speaker 1: and not her mother Crystal at all. Okay, yeah, huh,
- 14:28Speaker 1: So I do want to preface that Jayleen was well
- 14:31Speaker 1: cared for, thankfully.
- 14:33Speaker 2: Just not by her mom, right, Okay.
- 14:36Speaker 1: So it would have been Crystal's mom, yeah, who generally
- 14:40Speaker 1: did the care of Jayleen.
- 14:41Speaker 2: But I mean you do hear about that sometimes, right,
- 14:44Speaker 2: Like the person wasn't ready to have a kate or whatever,
- 14:49Speaker 2: so then the grandparent has to step in.
- 14:52Speaker 1: Right, definitely. No, I'm not judging anything as far as.
- 14:55Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm not judging either, but I'm just like you
- 14:57Speaker 2: do hear of that happening.
- 14:58Speaker 1: Yeah, there's there's always situation. However, it's not cool to
- 15:02Speaker 1: abandon your child and be like, can you babysit the weekend?
- 15:05Speaker 1: Weeks later enough?
- 15:06Speaker 2: Well, yeah, you have to communicate properly.
- 15:08Speaker 1: Yeah. It's also not cool to be like, hey, mom,
- 15:11Speaker 1: can you look after my kid because I'm going to
- 15:13Speaker 1: just go party and then just not come back. And
- 15:15Speaker 1: you just keep doing that over and over and I'm
- 15:17Speaker 1: taking advantage, Like, that's not okay. You want to go party,
- 15:20Speaker 1: have a good weekend, leave your kid with your your
- 15:23Speaker 1: parent form the look after. Fucking power to you, but
- 15:26Speaker 1: step back in that role and be responsible, you know. So,
- 15:31Speaker 1: So now, Jalen, I do want to preface this as well,
- 15:34Speaker 1: Jalen wasn't the only daughter that Crystal had. She had
- 15:36Speaker 1: an older daughter as well, but there isn't much information
- 15:39Speaker 1: out there regarding them, Okay, and this story is Jalen's
- 15:43Speaker 1: story after all, So keeping the sister anonymous and this
- 15:46Speaker 1: whole thing is quite understandable.
- 15:48Speaker 2: Okay.
- 15:48Speaker 1: So I did just want to preface that that Jalen
- 15:50Speaker 1: had an older sister. Don't know the age, don't know
- 15:53Speaker 1: the name, but yeah, it was case.
- 15:56Speaker 2: Do you know, do you are you aware of like
- 15:57Speaker 2: the older sister was living with them?
- 16:00Speaker 1: Yes?
- 16:01Speaker 2: Okay, yes, okay.
- 16:04Speaker 1: So it would have been a total of I believe
- 16:08Speaker 1: it would have been five six people in the house
- 16:11Speaker 1: because you have the two grandparents, you have Crystal, her
- 16:14Speaker 1: sibling and two daughters.
- 16:15Speaker 2: Yes, yep, okay.
- 16:17Speaker 1: But regardless of all that situation, regardless of the older sister.
- 16:20Speaker 1: In twenty twenty three, the new or sorry, the school
- 16:23Speaker 1: year was coming to an end. You know, summer holidays
- 16:26Speaker 1: are coming, right Jaylen Jayleen? I really want to call
- 16:30Speaker 1: her Jaylen. I'm pretty sure it's Jayleen. So Jayleen was
- 16:33Speaker 1: only sixteen months old and her mother, Crystal, you know,
- 16:36Speaker 1: working as a substitute teacher, as I mentioned earlier, if
- 16:39Speaker 1: you recall, was looking forward to these summer holidays, not
- 16:42Speaker 1: to spend with her daughter though, not to have the
- 16:45Speaker 1: time off and you know, be the loving mother or
- 16:48Speaker 1: family person or whatever it was for Crystal. Instead, she
- 16:52Speaker 1: was looking forward to one of her favorite things, traveling. Traveling,
- 16:56Speaker 1: traveling of course, right, so she had a million places
- 17:00Speaker 1: in her mind that she wanted to travel to, but
- 17:02Speaker 1: one of the top ones that was on her list
- 17:04Speaker 1: of the moment was Puerto Rico. Okay, See, she had
- 17:07Speaker 1: a new boyfriend that she was talking with online and
- 17:10Speaker 1: heading over there meant a new vacation with her newest
- 17:14Speaker 1: love interest.
- 17:16Speaker 2: Sounds kind of romantic, I guess.
- 17:17Speaker 1: Eh yep, similar to as what had happened before to
- 17:20Speaker 1: conceive Jayleen. So she booked her vacation for June eighth
- 17:24Speaker 1: to June eleventh.
- 17:26Speaker 2: June eighth to June eleventh, okay, like she would have
- 17:29Speaker 2: just finished the school year then, yesah.
- 17:32Speaker 1: So she had left a few days early to earlier
- 17:37Speaker 1: than what she had booked. The vacation in Puerto Rico
- 17:39Speaker 1: was June eight to eleventh, but she left early to
- 17:42Speaker 1: head to Detroit for a few days with friends before
- 17:44Speaker 1: catching her flight. Okay, so a ring doorbell camera footage
- 17:48Speaker 1: on the house that they lived and shows her leaving
- 17:51Speaker 1: on June sixth, twenty twenty three, with suitcase in hand,
- 17:55Speaker 1: ready for her adventure.
- 17:57Speaker 2: This case is like quite new, hey, very much so?
- 18:00Speaker 1: Yeah, wow, very much. It's we're talking last year. Yeah,
- 18:05Speaker 1: this happened a year ago.
- 18:07Speaker 2: Oh okay.
- 18:08Speaker 1: Yeah. So however, like always, she left Jayleen in the
- 18:13Speaker 1: hands of others to care for the Only problem is,
- 18:16Speaker 1: though there was no one else around for the job.
- 18:20Speaker 1: The rest of the family was already out of the
- 18:22Speaker 1: house and away, taking Crystel's oldest daughter with them, which
- 18:27Speaker 1: left just Crystal and Jaylen in the house. But now
- 18:31Speaker 1: that Crystal was leaving, it meant that sixteen month old
- 18:35Speaker 1: Jayleen was being left in the house alone.
- 18:40Speaker 2: Holy shit. So she just decided, like wow, it is
- 18:48Speaker 2: actually unbelievable. So no one was there. She's probably like
- 18:51Speaker 2: Burnt Bridges with so many people watching this little girl,
- 18:54Speaker 2: and she just decided that she would just fuck it
- 18:57Speaker 2: and go anyway.
- 18:58Speaker 1: I don't even know if she had tempted to find
- 19:00Speaker 1: anyone to look after her. She just, I mean, before
- 19:05Speaker 1: heading out the door, Crystal made sure Jayleen was put
- 19:07Speaker 1: in her playpen, but that was generally a place for
- 19:10Speaker 1: little Jayleen to be put in play or nap or whatever, right,
- 19:13Speaker 1: or or a moment for you know, mom to get
- 19:16Speaker 1: a moment to herself or grandma or whatever.
- 19:18Speaker 2: Right, Yeah, a safe place while you're like making dinner
- 19:21Speaker 2: or something.
- 19:21Speaker 1: Yeah, but now instead this playpen is it's going to
- 19:26Speaker 1: serve as Jaylen's prison cell for a toddler.
- 19:30Speaker 2: Like, what did she think was going to happen? I
- 19:34Speaker 2: don't know, just didn't give a shit she.
- 19:35Speaker 1: Did, She didn't care to think. I don't know if
- 19:38Speaker 1: she didn't care, but she didn't care to think.
- 19:42Speaker 2: Yeah, but you wouldn't even have to think very.
- 19:44Speaker 1: Hard, No, you wouldn't, you know. It's very obvious. Yeah,
- 19:49Speaker 1: my child needs looking after. If I leave, what's going
- 19:53Speaker 1: to happen?
- 19:53Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly, But.
- 19:55Speaker 1: That's exactly what's happening here. Crystal went out the front
- 19:58Speaker 1: door with her suitcase as I mentioned already seen on
- 20:00Speaker 1: the ring camera, and she hopped into an uber and
- 20:04Speaker 1: went on her way, leaving her daughter.
- 20:05Speaker 2: Behind completely alone at like sixteen months.
- 20:08Speaker 1: You bet you so. As the days passed, she was
- 20:11Speaker 1: having the time of her life. She hung up with friends,
- 20:13Speaker 1: spent time with her new boyfriend, walked on beaches, ate
- 20:17Speaker 1: good food, swam in the ocean, had some drinks, you know,
- 20:20Speaker 1: all the vacation y type stuff, and probably again more
- 20:23Speaker 1: like adult time with her new love interest. Right, and
- 20:28Speaker 1: she of course, made several posts to her social media pages,
- 20:32Speaker 1: as she often did, showing all the good times that
- 20:35Speaker 1: she was having. There was even one post she made
- 20:38Speaker 1: on June ninth, three days after she left home, that
- 20:41Speaker 1: shows her on the Isle Verde Beach in Puerto Rico.
- 20:45Speaker 1: I'm pretty sure I just butchered the pronunciation of that
- 20:47Speaker 1: because I am not Spanish. I am Canadian, so my apologies.
- 20:50Speaker 1: But in that post, she added a caption that read
- 20:55Speaker 1: this quote time enjoyed is the true time live now.
- 21:02Speaker 1: I want to preface that her native language is Spanish.
- 21:04Speaker 1: That is translated she posted in Spanish. That's translations.
- 21:09Speaker 2: So yeah, oh my gosh, the amount of things that
- 21:13Speaker 2: I want to say right now, Like but I just
- 21:16Speaker 2: I just feel like, what do you want to say? Well,
- 21:18Speaker 2: this like it's so inappropriate, Like it's so inappropriate, but
- 21:21Speaker 2: like this this chick is just fucked Like she's like
- 21:27Speaker 2: a complete bitch. Yeah, So like and that's sort that's
- 21:32Speaker 2: me like downpling what I want to actually say, but like,
- 21:35Speaker 2: what the actual shit she there?
- 21:38Speaker 1: To put it in the easiest terms and downplay it
- 21:41Speaker 1: but still keep the veracity of the words I want
- 21:44Speaker 1: to say. She's an absolute fucking monster, and that is
- 21:50Speaker 1: putting it nicely, very nicely.
- 21:54Speaker 2: I just like, I can't even comprehend that you would
- 21:57Speaker 2: be able to just disassociate so much from like what
- 22:02Speaker 2: could be going on at home and just going and
- 22:06Speaker 2: like enjoying yourself and not like having a care in
- 22:09Speaker 2: the world. I know that is. It's mind blowing. It's
- 22:13Speaker 2: mind blowing. It doesn't even seem like it is something
- 22:16Speaker 2: someone of a right mind should be able to do.
- 22:18Speaker 1: I agree. So we are currently three days since she
- 22:21Speaker 1: left her daughter at home alone, and the days continued
- 22:25Speaker 1: to pass by as Crystal enjoyed her vacation until finally
- 22:29Speaker 1: it was over and it was time for her to
- 22:31Speaker 1: come home. She caught her flight and flew back to Detroit,
- 22:34Speaker 1: where her journey started, but instead of catching an uber
- 22:37Speaker 1: and heading back home, she decided to stay a few
- 22:40Speaker 1: extra days there to keep the vacation going and enjoying
- 22:43Speaker 1: more time with her friends before finally calling it quits.
- 22:49Speaker 1: It would be a grand total of ten days that
- 22:52Speaker 1: Crystal was on vacation for leaving her daughter abandoned in
- 22:56Speaker 1: the house without anyone. It was ten days that Jayleen
- 23:01Speaker 1: was left alone at sixteen months old.
- 23:07Speaker 2: Man did she like think maybe that the other family
- 23:11Speaker 2: members were coming home or something, because I really am
- 23:14Speaker 2: having a hard time comprehending this.
- 23:16Speaker 1: Again, I don't she didn't think she did, as far
- 23:20Speaker 1: as I can tell, because I've watched some interviews with
- 23:23Speaker 1: her and everything. I mean, maybe not interviews, well, I
- 23:26Speaker 1: mean kind of some interviews quote unquote interviews if you will,
- 23:31Speaker 1: like with police and stuff. But she just didn't think.
- 23:36Speaker 1: That's the best way I can put it.
- 23:37Speaker 2: She just did not think she might literally be the
- 23:40Speaker 2: most self absorbed person in the whole entire world.
- 23:43Speaker 1: Yeah. So, when Crystal returned home on June sixteenth, twenty
- 23:48Speaker 1: twenty three, she found Jayleen still in her playpen, right
- 23:52Speaker 1: where she was left. She was severely dehydrated and severely starved.
- 23:58Speaker 1: Her eyes were sunken in and laying in an extremely
- 24:02Speaker 1: soiled playpen as she had nowhere else to go and
- 24:06Speaker 1: nowhere else to relieve herself. Crystal found her daughter laying motionless,
- 24:12Speaker 1: she wasn't breathing. In a panic, Crystal dialed nine one one,
- 24:18Speaker 1: and here's that call, h.
- 24:30Speaker 4: Empire. Sorry what I said, I'm talking to help you?
- 25:00Speaker 3: Are you going like you say? Okay?
- 25:03Speaker 4: And the thing that's more ring. Okay, scary, Crissle, Crisle,
- 25:12Speaker 4: your lasting crazels. Please tell me a fish.
- 25:27Speaker 3: Anything you tell me? Going on? So we.
- 25:44Speaker 2: Like going on?
- 25:46Speaker 3: Yeah, so hard. But now I can get in the audience.
- 25:56Speaker 2: Yeah, okay, she knows it.
- 26:17Speaker 3: Why why why I'm ashamed coming over.
- 26:31Speaker 4: Their mom and they.
- 26:32Speaker 3: Are mom mom. Yeah, I'm.
- 26:51Speaker 4: So.
- 26:51Speaker 1: The quality of the audio that I got a hold
- 26:54Speaker 1: of is not the best quality. It's very echoey. I'm
- 26:57Speaker 1: going to try in impost to do a little bit
- 26:59Speaker 1: of adjustment here for everyone to make it a little
- 27:01Speaker 1: bit more clear what you're hearing. What's going on is
- 27:07Speaker 1: Crystal is in an absolute manic panic, screaming my baby's dying.
- 27:13Speaker 1: Help me, my baby's dying. The nine to one dispatch
- 27:17Speaker 1: is trying to get an address, name and what happened.
- 27:20Speaker 1: But Crystal's English isn't the greatest. Being you know, from
- 27:23Speaker 1: Ecuador and a Spanish speaking first individual, She's doing very
- 27:29Speaker 1: good with English as far as I'm concerned, especially in
- 27:31Speaker 1: this sort of situation where she is panicking, but she
- 27:34Speaker 1: is at a loss for some of her words, and
- 27:36Speaker 1: I think there's a lot of Spanish being thrown around,
- 27:38Speaker 1: which is the jumbling in the background that I can't understand.
- 27:42Speaker 1: Maybe it is just jumbling inaudible, maybe it's not Spanish.
- 27:45Speaker 1: I'm not sure, but it's hard to really get an
- 27:50Speaker 1: understanding of what some of the things is that she's saying.
- 27:54Speaker 1: But she is panic. She's like, come on, come on,
- 27:56Speaker 1: please help, Like now she's dying. She said, she's not moving.
- 28:01Speaker 1: She's white. She's white. She's like, please send someone now.
- 28:05Speaker 2: And yeah, did she leave out the fact that she
- 28:09Speaker 2: was just vacationing for the last ten days.
- 28:12Speaker 1: Well, we'll touch on that here in a second.
- 28:16Speaker 2: Because honestly, like listening to that, I feel like my
- 28:19Speaker 2: like my heart should feel like pretty sad and stuff, right,
- 28:23Speaker 2: but I it honestly just I felt like it just
- 28:25Speaker 2: kind of increased my hatred towards her.
- 28:28Speaker 1: See, I do feel the opposite. I had sympathy for
- 28:31Speaker 1: her there because, as I said, I don't think she
- 28:36Speaker 1: she thought well, and that's that's what makes me think
- 28:39Speaker 1: she didn't think about what would happen, because you said earlier,
- 28:43Speaker 1: it's if you think about it for a moment, it's
- 28:45Speaker 1: clear on what can happen if you leave a child
- 28:47Speaker 1: alone at that age in a house. And I don't
- 28:50Speaker 1: think she even thought about it. Well, I that's why
- 28:53Speaker 1: I think that.
- 28:55Speaker 2: That makes me feel like sick, because I can't comprehend
- 28:58Speaker 2: someone not thinking that through.
- 29:01Speaker 1: Oh I agree, I agree, But this is what makes
- 29:04Speaker 1: me think that she didn't think is because of her
- 29:07Speaker 1: response here.
- 29:08Speaker 2: Jeez.
- 29:09Speaker 1: So needless to say though, once they were once they
- 29:11Speaker 1: understood the address and everything, police were quickly dispatched to
- 29:14Speaker 1: the home. They knew something horrible had happened inside, and
- 29:18Speaker 1: they were preparing themselves when they were walking through the
- 29:20Speaker 1: door of that home. But as one detective described in
- 29:23Speaker 1: the courtroom later on, this is this was one of
- 29:26Speaker 1: the worst things he had ever witnessed in his entire career.
- 29:32Speaker 2: Oh and that's just one thing too, Like her actions
- 29:34Speaker 2: aren't just affecting like her and her daughter, they're going
- 29:38Speaker 2: to be They're affecting so many more people too, write
- 29:40Speaker 2: like this little girl also had like you know, grandparents
- 29:43Speaker 2: that loved her and stuff.
- 29:44Speaker 1: And the older sister and auntie.
- 29:45Speaker 2: Yeah, and now these these like first responders are having
- 29:49Speaker 2: to go in there, and it just yeah, it's a
- 29:51Speaker 2: spiral effect of just like destroying and affecting so many
- 29:55Speaker 2: people's freaking lives.
- 29:57Speaker 1: It is, so they did find little jay Lynn as
- 30:01Speaker 1: I described earlier, and I'm not going to put you
- 30:03Speaker 1: guys through the description again because it was heartbreaking the
- 30:05Speaker 1: first time, but she was withered away for a lack
- 30:10Speaker 1: of better terms, and shortly after the ambulance arrived at
- 30:14Speaker 1: the scene, she was unfortunately pronounced dead at only sixteen
- 30:17Speaker 1: months old.
- 30:19Speaker 2: Dang wow.
- 30:22Speaker 1: The investigation into what happened quickly began. How could this
- 30:25Speaker 1: little girl end up in this withered state that she
- 30:28Speaker 1: was in. It was clear that some sort of neglect
- 30:30Speaker 1: was occurring, so the investigator started asking Crystal questions. Now,
- 30:35Speaker 1: police bodycam footage shows the questioning occurring while they are
- 30:38Speaker 1: still at the scene and the time is only two
- 30:42Speaker 1: hours after the nine one one call was placed. Investigators
- 30:46Speaker 1: are asking questions regarding Jayleen, her health, and how she
- 30:49Speaker 1: came to be so frail leading up to her death. Right,
- 30:53Speaker 1: Crystal is seen in a rather calm manner, which is
- 30:56Speaker 1: surprising considering the circumstances of what just happened and how
- 30:59Speaker 1: she was on the nine to one one call. But
- 31:03Speaker 1: instead of being panicked, she was calm and in dealing
- 31:07Speaker 1: with the police and everything. She was describing how she
- 31:10Speaker 1: was caring for Jayleen during her declining health the past week. Now,
- 31:16Speaker 1: this is where I had to take my break and
- 31:18Speaker 1: walk away from my research, because this is where I
- 31:21Speaker 1: got so fucking mad, because she is now calm and
- 31:28Speaker 1: lying to the police. According to her, she had been
- 31:31Speaker 1: home and Jaylen had been sorry. Jaylen had been vomiting
- 31:34Speaker 1: and not eating at all. She'd been giving your tylenol,
- 31:37Speaker 1: trying to get her to feel better, but she just
- 31:39Speaker 1: wouldn't eat, she would throw it up. All of which
- 31:42Speaker 1: were lies. She hadn't been looking after Jaylen at all
- 31:45Speaker 1: in the least, she had abandoned her and she went
- 31:48Speaker 1: on vacation instead. And she was now calm about this,
- 31:52Speaker 1: not concerned about her daughter. She was concerned about her
- 31:54Speaker 1: own ass.
- 31:56Speaker 2: Holy shit, And that just like flipped that quickly in
- 31:59Speaker 2: two hours.
- 32:00Speaker 1: Two hours afterwards, body cam shows her calm as a
- 32:04Speaker 1: fucking cucumber, covering her ass, making up these fucking stories,
- 32:08Speaker 1: which tells me immediately after nine one one, as soon
- 32:13Speaker 1: as she caught her breath, for a minute before police
- 32:15Speaker 1: were even arriving, she was in her head making these excuses,
- 32:18Speaker 1: trying to figure out how she can get out of
- 32:20Speaker 1: this totally. She was not concerned about her fucking daughter.
- 32:23Speaker 1: So this is where I lost my shit on this case.
- 32:26Speaker 2: Well see, and that's why I'm still almost feeling like
- 32:29Speaker 2: that call was just a bunch of bullshit. Like I'm
- 32:32Speaker 2: not one hundred percent sure that she wasn't just being
- 32:34Speaker 2: like acting in drama to some ex she might have.
- 32:38Speaker 1: Been, because when I heard that call initially I thought
- 32:42Speaker 1: it was real.
- 32:44Speaker 2: I'm not so sure now because it if like she
- 32:49Speaker 2: processed how this is going to benefit her in the
- 32:52Speaker 2: long run, and now that she doesn't have a kid
- 32:54Speaker 2: and she can just like I mean, she still is
- 32:57Speaker 2: an older kidding, she still does have another but like
- 32:59Speaker 2: she can just like go on vacation or do whatever
- 33:01Speaker 2: the hell she wants. Probably more so she was going
- 33:03Speaker 2: to do it anyways, That's very true.
- 33:06Speaker 1: I don't think she had a care in the world
- 33:08Speaker 1: to even concern herself about her children. I still do
- 33:12Speaker 1: stand by that. I don't think she thought because she
- 33:15Speaker 1: didn't care to think, and the moment she had to think,
- 33:19Speaker 1: it was about herself. Still. Yeah, So it didn't take
- 33:24Speaker 1: much digging for investigators to find out the truth.
- 33:26Speaker 2: Oh God, no, no, it wouldn't.
- 33:28Speaker 1: It wasn't a matter of you know, oh my child
- 33:31Speaker 1: is sick. I've been caring for her after all this. No,
- 33:33Speaker 1: her social media was filled with posts from her trip.
- 33:37Speaker 1: They found footage on the ring camera of her leaving
- 33:39Speaker 1: for vacation coming home from vacation. The ring camera had
- 33:42Speaker 1: even captured many events with Jayleen crying inside the house alone,
- 33:47Speaker 1: including one at June ninth at approximately one am, when
- 33:50Speaker 1: they believed it captured Jayleen's final cries before she died.
- 33:56Speaker 3: No.
- 33:58Speaker 1: Yes, they found plane tickets, flightlests, receipts, you name it,
- 34:04Speaker 1: all proving that Crystal had never been there for her child.
- 34:07Speaker 1: In fact, she wasn't even in the fucking country. No.
- 34:10Speaker 2: Because the thing is, if like she was that sick
- 34:12Speaker 2: and like trying to care, like she would have probably
- 34:14Speaker 2: taken her to the doctor exactly.
- 34:16Speaker 1: That also brings in the question, if she was this sick,
- 34:18Speaker 1: if she was losing all this weight, if she was frail,
- 34:21Speaker 1: not eating, why the fuck did you not do anything?
- 34:26Speaker 2: My gosh, this just is like just makes you just
- 34:29Speaker 2: so sick.
- 34:30Speaker 1: Eh, this is this is not the most gruesome case
- 34:35Speaker 1: we've covered, but this is one of the.
- 34:38Speaker 2: One of the worst.
- 34:39Speaker 1: To me, This is this is almost up there with
- 34:41Speaker 1: like Sylvia Lichens because of the I mean, don't get
- 34:44Speaker 1: me wrong, she was fucking tortured in that basement, But
- 34:48Speaker 1: this little girl was just abandoned without a single fucking
- 34:51Speaker 1: thought by her mother.
- 34:53Speaker 2: Well, yeah, because what that little girl went through would
- 34:55Speaker 2: be horrible.
- 34:56Speaker 1: Yeah, horrible. And I do want to preface like, you
- 34:59Speaker 1: cannot compare cases. It's just some cases really fucking tug
- 35:03Speaker 1: at your hearts, and this one's tugging at my heart
- 35:07Speaker 1: in that degree, is all I'm meaning. So, I mean
- 35:10Speaker 1: she was lying through her teeth just to cover her
- 35:12Speaker 1: own fucking ass. Now, the autopsy of Jayleen showed that
- 35:16Speaker 1: she had died due to starvation and severe dehydration. Now,
- 35:20Speaker 1: remember she was only sixteen months old, and I don't
- 35:23Speaker 1: know what she had weighed. I don't know what an
- 35:25Speaker 1: average sixteen month old weighs. But she had lost seven
- 35:30Speaker 1: pounds since her recent doctor's visit in April, barely two
- 35:34Speaker 1: months prior. Seven pounds less than that recorded weight when
- 35:38Speaker 1: she went to the doctor's.
- 35:40Speaker 2: Yeah. Well, and probably even more so than that, because
- 35:43Speaker 2: in those two months, like kids, they gain weight, I
- 35:46Speaker 2: feel like fairly quickly at that age, right, and stuff
- 35:49Speaker 2: is it growing?
- 35:50Speaker 1: Yeah? So Crystal was, of course and rightfully so swiftly
- 35:56Speaker 1: arrested as a result of all the findings. It was
- 35:59Speaker 1: on June eighteenth that she was arrested and charged with
- 36:03Speaker 1: the murder of her sixteen month old daughter, with prosecutors
- 36:06Speaker 1: not ruling out the possibility of the death penalty.
- 36:10Speaker 2: Well. Yeah, I just feel like she should be okay
- 36:15Speaker 2: for someone that age to not be like fed or
- 36:20Speaker 2: liquids or anything, right, It's like for an adult, you
- 36:22Speaker 2: could last longer, I think, right, So they need to
- 36:25Speaker 2: figure out the equivalent and lock her into some frickin'
- 36:28Speaker 2: room for that time. I'm serious, No, I get you.
- 36:32Speaker 2: I feel like she needs to realize what the fuck
- 36:35Speaker 2: she did. Yeah.
- 36:36Speaker 1: No, my laugh at your response is not because I'm like,
- 36:40Speaker 1: oh my god, Nicole. No, I fully fucking agree. But
- 36:43Speaker 1: it's funny you say that because I have a quote
- 36:45Speaker 1: at the end of this that kind of goes along
- 36:47Speaker 1: with those fucking lines. Well, yeah, we're going to touch on.
- 36:51Speaker 1: So anyways. After being arrested, her bond was set for
- 36:54Speaker 1: a million dollars, with a trial date set in January
- 36:58Speaker 1: of twenty twenty four of this year. Okay, now, it
- 37:02Speaker 1: was postponed a little bit into February. But however, it
- 37:05Speaker 1: doesn't matter because a trial never came to be because
- 37:08Speaker 1: four days before she was set to see the inside
- 37:11Speaker 1: of a courtroom, Crystal took a plea deal.
- 37:15Speaker 2: Oh gosh, I thought you were going to say that
- 37:17Speaker 2: she took her own life. No, yeah, okay, which was
- 37:21Speaker 2: shocking to me.
- 37:22Speaker 1: You know, she didn't do that. She took a plea deal.
- 37:25Speaker 2: How the fuck would she even get a plea deal.
- 37:27Speaker 1: Well, she agreed to plead guilty to aggravated murder and
- 37:32Speaker 1: endangering a child, which she would it would remain. It
- 37:38Speaker 1: would mean that the remaining charges that were actually being
- 37:41Speaker 1: placed against her other than those two, would be dropped.
- 37:44Speaker 1: So the charges that she initially being charged with were
- 37:48Speaker 1: aggravated murder, endangering a child, two counts of murder, and
- 37:51Speaker 1: one count of feloness assault. So this means that the
- 37:55Speaker 1: two counts of murder and one count of feloness assault
- 37:57Speaker 1: would be dropped, leaving her only with the aggravation murder
- 38:00Speaker 1: and endangering a child. Now, taking this plea meant that
- 38:04Speaker 1: the chances of receiving the death penalty significantly dropped, if
- 38:08Speaker 1: not faded off the table altogether.
- 38:10Speaker 2: Okay, right.
- 38:11Speaker 1: So, on March eighteenth, twenty twenty four, Crystal received her sentence,
- 38:17Speaker 1: and on this day, Crystal's defense team presented not an
- 38:21Speaker 1: excuse on this whole incident, but reasons why this may
- 38:26Speaker 1: have happened, an understanding if you will. They have course
- 38:30Speaker 1: played the mental health card, saying that her mental well
- 38:33Speaker 1: being was lacking. She went on the trip because in
- 38:36Speaker 1: her mind, if she was okay, it meant her daughter
- 38:39Speaker 1: was okay too. Bullshit.
- 38:42Speaker 2: Excuse me for a minute, I I was like, holy shit,
- 38:44Speaker 2: are you okay? I thought you're actually choking.
- 38:46Speaker 1: Jeez, well I'm choking on what?
- 38:48Speaker 2: Oh yeah, that's that's some big time bullshit right there.
- 38:52Speaker 1: Yeah. I think what they're alluding to is that some
- 38:54Speaker 1: quasi fucked up, out of sight, out of mind kind
- 38:56Speaker 1: of thing. And they were all so saying, you know,
- 39:00Speaker 1: she was on some medication and stuff, some pretty heavy
- 39:03Speaker 1: medication then like for for mental health. Then was off
- 39:06Speaker 1: it just prior to this trip. But that doesn't explain
- 39:08Speaker 1: her prior incidents with child abandonment, the two weeks, three
- 39:11Speaker 1: weeks whatever it was, of just the threat someone else's house.
- 39:14Speaker 1: She has a history of this exactly. No matter what
- 39:17Speaker 1: the defense said, and no matter what Crystal had to say,
- 39:19Speaker 1: they they did not try to make excuses. I want
- 39:22Speaker 1: to do say that, but I think that's because they're
- 39:25Speaker 1: in sentencing. They're not defending themselves in court. It's she
- 39:28Speaker 1: already took complete she's guilty, she's admitting guilt, so there's
- 39:31Speaker 1: no use, right right. The only painted a picture of understanding,
- 39:35Speaker 1: which to their credit, the defense did do a very
- 39:37Speaker 1: good job. The defense in the first few opening lines,
- 39:42Speaker 1: like the opening statement, it almost sounded like a prosecutor,
- 39:45Speaker 1: like he was like, really scolding, what fucking happened? So
- 39:48Speaker 1: I was like, holy shit. I watched the video on
- 39:51Speaker 1: the speech. It was it was well done. Props that
- 39:54Speaker 1: defense attorney, well fucking done. However, nothing in my mind
- 39:57Speaker 1: can excuse what Crystal did. Mental health, these issues are real. Yes,
- 40:03Speaker 1: I do understand that. However, a sixteen month old child
- 40:07Speaker 1: starved to death in a bed of their own soil
- 40:09Speaker 1: because their mental health lacked and she needed a vacation.
- 40:13Speaker 1: Excuse me. Fuck no, that's not an excuse. That's not
- 40:17Speaker 1: a painting a picture of understanding. It does not excuse actions,
- 40:21Speaker 1: doesn't make me understand positions what so fucking ever. Sorry,
- 40:26Speaker 1: that was a bit of a rent on my end.
- 40:28Speaker 2: I know, well, my heart is just like so heavy,
- 40:31Speaker 2: so heavy.
- 40:32Speaker 1: Yeah. So Crystal also got up and did say a
- 40:36Speaker 1: few words. She did, of course speak Spanish, being her
- 40:39Speaker 1: main language, with someone translating for in the courtroom. I'm
- 40:43Speaker 1: not going to really talk too much about what she
- 40:45Speaker 1: had to say, but I will say that she did
- 40:46Speaker 1: say in her statement in court that God and her
- 40:50Speaker 1: daughter forgives her. I fucking doubt that.
- 40:53Speaker 3: You don't.
- 40:53Speaker 1: You don't have the right to fucking say that. I'm sorry,
- 40:58Speaker 1: you're just like, I'm very angry over this.
- 41:02Speaker 2: I feel like I've now moved from the angry to
- 41:05Speaker 2: just like sadness. You're just like finger up, like just
- 41:09Speaker 2: like looks in your shit.
- 41:10Speaker 1: I'm sorry, like you you make your sixteen year old
- 41:13Speaker 1: month daughter starve to death, and what you say a
- 41:15Speaker 1: couple hail Mary's and you're forgiving.
- 41:17Speaker 2: You just think that you can be forgiven for that?
- 41:19Speaker 2: That's something. I that's something.
- 41:22Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 41:23Speaker 1: Anyways, when everyone had their their turn to say a
- 41:26Speaker 1: few words, it was finally time for the sentencing. Crystal
- 41:29Speaker 1: Candelario was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility
- 41:35Speaker 1: of parole and court judge Brendan Shehan had this to
- 41:40Speaker 1: say to her. I remember when I said I had
- 41:42Speaker 1: a quote to go along with you? Yeah, yeah, this
- 41:44Speaker 1: is it. Quote that judge. Just as you didn't let
- 41:49Speaker 1: Jaylen out of her confinement, so too, you should spend
- 41:52Speaker 1: the rest of your life in a cell without freedom.
- 41:55Speaker 1: The only difference will be that the prison will at
- 41:59Speaker 1: least feed you and give you liquid that you denied her.
- 42:04Speaker 2: Yeah, that like gives you goosebump. Say, yeah, I'm glad
- 42:09Speaker 2: that I'm not the only person that thought that way.
- 42:13Speaker 1: Yeah. No, the judge fucking said this in court, like
- 42:16Speaker 1: I'm sorry that. Yeah, I want to applaud that, Jube
- 42:20Speaker 1: like good for you. Yes, And that is the story
- 42:24Speaker 1: of Jayleen Candelario.
- 42:27Speaker 2: You know, and the whole time too, your presenting this
- 42:30Speaker 2: like like people struggle and can't have children, right like that.
- 42:36Speaker 2: There are so many people out there that would have
- 42:38Speaker 2: wanted little jay Leen, right.
- 42:42Speaker 1: Someone would have fucking given Jayleen the world. Yeah, someone
- 42:45Speaker 1: would have loved her to the fucking moon and back.
- 42:48Speaker 1: Her mother didn't.
- 42:50Speaker 2: Well, Ben, oh my gosh, you could just like I'm
- 42:54Speaker 2: I am, you could just saw like this is one
- 42:58Speaker 2: of the most saddest cases.
- 42:59Speaker 1: I think, ever, it is I can't have met ten days,
- 43:04Speaker 1: and I think that like the playpen, I didn't write
- 43:06Speaker 1: down the size. I had the dimensions at one point.
- 43:08Speaker 1: It's like like two and a half by four feet
- 43:11Speaker 1: this playpen, so like it's a standard playpen that you're
- 43:13Speaker 1: thinking of, right, that's her prison cell for ten days.
- 43:16Speaker 1: She withered away.
- 43:17Speaker 2: Mm hmm. Yeah, because when you had first like just
- 43:20Speaker 2: mentioned a little bit about the story, I was kind
- 43:22Speaker 2: of like, like it's terrible, like beyond terrible. But I
- 43:27Speaker 2: was like, okay, well, like maybe this little girl can
- 43:29Speaker 2: like you know, wander through the house of sorts, right
- 43:33Speaker 2: and like find something to eat or whatever. Like they
- 43:39Speaker 2: she could have lived potentially, right, But then when you
- 43:41Speaker 2: said that she was in this like she can't get
- 43:43Speaker 2: out of the fucking playpen. No, like she can't get
- 43:46Speaker 2: out of the playpen.
- 43:47Speaker 1: No, maybe this kid could have you're right, wandered through
- 43:52Speaker 1: found the dog food or the cat food, or the
- 43:53Speaker 1: water bowl like something like that opened the drank out
- 43:56Speaker 1: of something drinking the toilet, who knows could have served.
- 44:00Speaker 1: But she wasn't even given the chance to try and survive.
- 44:04Speaker 1: She was imprisoned and abandoned without a second fuck, without
- 44:08Speaker 1: even a first thought.
- 44:11Speaker 2: And you're right, like she obviously didn't think it, didn't
- 44:13Speaker 2: even think it through, because like I feel like if
- 44:16Speaker 2: she did, she maybe would have like left extra food
- 44:19Speaker 2: or water or something in the playpen. But like she
- 44:22Speaker 2: literally was just like completely oblivious. I do consequences.
- 44:28Speaker 1: I do want a preface. She might have left a
- 44:30Speaker 1: bottle or something in the crypt or the playpen. I
- 44:33Speaker 1: don't know.
- 44:35Speaker 2: Well, you'd have to load that playpen up with a
- 44:37Speaker 2: lot of things.
- 44:38Speaker 1: No, shit, here's a bottle, Like I know, there wasn't
- 44:41Speaker 1: like extra food given. There might have been a bottle
- 44:44Speaker 1: or something given. That's it, if that happened at all.
- 44:49Speaker 2: Yeah, it's completely disgusting. It is so beyond comprehendible.
- 44:54Speaker 1: Yeah, and then to go into court and say that
- 44:55Speaker 1: my daughter forgives me.
- 44:57Speaker 2: Yeah, you I'm sorry, but I would never be to
- 45:00Speaker 2: forgive something like this. I don't think. No, there's no way,
- 45:04Speaker 2: because you're a complete monster one percent.
- 45:09Speaker 1: So yeah, that's that's why I was fucking pacing and
- 45:11Speaker 1: angry and walking away from my computer earlier today during research.
- 45:15Speaker 1: So yeah, yeah, can you understand a b now?
- 45:17Speaker 2: M M, Yeah, Well, I was pissed off since going
- 45:21Speaker 2: to the gym about this case. So and I didn't
- 45:23Speaker 2: even know quite all the details. Yeah, it's a doozy
- 45:27Speaker 2: more than yeah, more so then.
- 45:29Speaker 1: And Crystal hasn't even been behind bars for well since
- 45:33Speaker 1: her sentencing for six months, hasn't even made six months yet,
- 45:36Speaker 1: and she's got a lifetime to go.
- 45:38Speaker 2: And the thing too is like her parents probably would
- 45:41Speaker 2: have taken Jayleen.
- 45:42Speaker 1: Oh so I don't think they even knew of her
- 45:47Speaker 1: vacation or nothing.
- 45:48Speaker 2: It doesn't make any sense.
- 45:49Speaker 1: Nope. Wow, Now I do want to touch on what
- 45:53Speaker 1: you were talking about. What you were you You didn't
- 45:55Speaker 1: say anything about it, but the staring at my beard thing,
- 45:58Speaker 1: re member, I was like, why are you staying with beard?
- 46:00Speaker 1: And you're like, oh h Because I'm pretty sure it's
- 46:03Speaker 1: because she's an elementary school teacher looking after other people's kids.
- 46:08Speaker 2: Yeah. That was I to get my shit together during
- 46:13Speaker 2: this podcast because that that was jaw dropping that she
- 46:17Speaker 2: is a teacher.
- 46:18Speaker 1: Yep, she is a fucking teacher.
- 46:21Speaker 2: Was a teacher? Was Yeah? When when I was processing
- 46:27Speaker 2: a lot of things at that moment, and I was
- 46:30Speaker 2: losing my cool inside big time. I know, I was
- 46:33Speaker 2: just apparently focusing on your beard.
- 46:35Speaker 1: You were just fucking honed right in on it. I
- 46:38Speaker 1: was like, is there something in it? Like do you
- 46:40Speaker 1: have a spider crawling in it? Days there food?
- 46:42Speaker 2: Oh?
- 46:42Speaker 1: What?
- 46:43Speaker 3: Man? Well?
- 46:43Speaker 2: Yeah, I just yeah, I didn't even know what to
- 46:48Speaker 2: say because I was just like, you gotta be kidding me.
- 46:50Speaker 2: You have to be kidding me.
- 46:52Speaker 1: Of all things, she's a fucking teacher.
- 46:55Speaker 2: Yeah, that is also mind blowing.
- 46:58Speaker 1: Yeah, she's a fucking monster.
- 47:01Speaker 3: Uh.
- 47:02Speaker 1: I'm glad she's gonna be behind bars for the rest
- 47:05Speaker 1: of her life because she fucking deserves it.
- 47:08Speaker 2: Well, yeah, because they need to have her in there,
- 47:10Speaker 2: take away food, take away like her sink, her toilet,
- 47:13Speaker 2: like she can maybe have a bed, I guess, and
- 47:16Speaker 2: that be that her.
- 47:16Speaker 1: Bed only put the walls exactly around her bed, and
- 47:20Speaker 1: she'll know exactly what her daughter.
- 47:21Speaker 2: Felt, like I know, and see how long she she lasts.
- 47:25Speaker 1: I don't think she'd make it longer than her daughter did.
- 47:28Speaker 1: Bet you her daughter would make it longer.
- 47:30Speaker 2: Bet you.
- 47:30Speaker 1: Her daughter's stronger than her.
- 47:33Speaker 2: Yeah, I know. And sometimes I'm like, that's not even
- 47:37Speaker 2: like I don't even think that's unjustifiable to go about
- 47:43Speaker 2: doing something like, like, I know we can't do things
- 47:46Speaker 2: like that, but gosh, I just feel like it'd be
- 47:48Speaker 2: so good for her to get a taste of what the.
- 47:51Speaker 1: Hell you get what you deserve sort of thing, and
- 47:53Speaker 1: the eye for an eye, I feel ye, But then
- 47:55Speaker 1: there's that humanitarian part of you. It's like, you can't.
- 48:00Speaker 1: I totally get both sides of the picture, which is
- 48:03Speaker 1: definitely along the sides of the lines of like the
- 48:06Speaker 1: death penalty is should it be abolished? But it still
- 48:10Speaker 1: stands today, and like the debate on both sides of that, Like,
- 48:14Speaker 1: I totally understand both sides of the coin, but.
- 48:19Speaker 2: We can't be doing inhumane things like that.
- 48:21Speaker 1: But I do agree that the punishment should fit the crime.
- 48:28Speaker 1: And sometimes in our society, I don't feel that the
- 48:31Speaker 1: punishment fits the crime because the crime was so bad.
- 48:36Speaker 1: The punishment is they got it too good. They have
- 48:40Speaker 1: it too because she's just gonna sit in prison for
- 48:42Speaker 1: the rest of her life. Doesn't have to worry about
- 48:44Speaker 1: anything except, like, you know, the the quirks of inside prison.
- 48:48Speaker 1: I get you, it can be rough, don't get me wrong.
- 48:50Speaker 1: But she doesn't have to worry abou where next meal
- 48:53Speaker 1: comes from. She doesn't have to worry about, you know,
- 48:57Speaker 1: do I have water?
- 48:59Speaker 2: She may be one of the inmates though that are
- 49:01Speaker 2: in slight danger for sure.
- 49:04Speaker 1: Probably actually most likely because people who do shit to
- 49:07Speaker 1: kids are usually not treated well in prison. Yeah, and
- 49:11Speaker 1: that's probably because, yeah, the crime that they committed does
- 49:14Speaker 1: not fit what their sentences right the point. But yeah,
- 49:19Speaker 1: kir enough, how.
- 49:20Speaker 2: Could you do that to like a sweet little sixteen
- 49:24Speaker 2: month I was going to say year old, but a
- 49:27Speaker 2: sixteen month old.
- 49:28Speaker 1: She was barely over a year, one year, four months?
- 49:32Speaker 2: Yeah, my god, my heart. Oh well, yeah, you're gonna
- 49:38Speaker 2: need to to kind of I don't even know how
- 49:42Speaker 2: you recover from having a research that.
- 49:46Speaker 1: Yeah, I don't know either, but we'll figure it out
- 49:48Speaker 1: a way. We really got to figure out a nice,
- 49:52Speaker 1: chill crime case. Maybe that's what I'm gonna do. I'm
- 49:54Speaker 1: gonna go on a tie rade here, and I'm gonna
- 49:56Speaker 1: try and find a good, funny, a lighthearted kind of
- 50:01Speaker 1: crime case. If you know of one, shoot us an email,
- 50:04Speaker 1: shoot us a message, or something like that. So maybe
- 50:06Speaker 1: we can do that one. I'm not guaranteeing it's happening
- 50:10Speaker 1: next episode or even the one after that, but soon
- 50:14Speaker 1: in the works. Plus, we also do have that October
- 50:17Speaker 1: coming up where we're gonna hit on some paranormals, some
- 50:20Speaker 1: like spooky, so it will be a little bit of
- 50:22Speaker 1: a distraction that month too, But before then, we definitely
- 50:25Speaker 1: have to get a little bit of a lighthearted one
- 50:26Speaker 1: here too.
- 50:28Speaker 2: Yeah, well, well done, Thank you.
- 50:32Speaker 1: I appreciate it. If you guys want to take a
- 50:33Speaker 1: look at any more of our content, we have social media,
- 50:35Speaker 1: as we have Patreon. We have two different youtubes, one
- 50:38Speaker 1: revlog and do tiny Home Life one where we post

- 50:47Speaker 1: are in the description of the podcast. We appreciate any
- 50:49Speaker 1: support if you're still here, that means the world to us.
- 50:52Speaker 1: If you wouldn't mind giving us a review. That helps

- 50:56Speaker 1: an indie podcast, it's us producing, us researching, it's only
- 51:01Speaker 1: us taking care of everything.
- 51:03Speaker 2: Yeah yeah, you can go and watch me staring at
- 51:05Speaker 2: Ben's beard like trying to figure out how I'm going
- 51:09Speaker 2: to get through this.
- 51:10Speaker 1: You'll see my face of utter confusion, like what's going on?
- 51:14Speaker 2: Oh my gosh. Well, until next time, stay wicked.
