- 0:00All right, so back for another one of Trump's
- 0:03The Art of the Deal. We're in Chapter 2, Elements
- 0:06of the Deal, Section Maximize Your Options. Trump
- 0:11says, I also protect myself by being flexible.
- 0:14I never get too attached to one deal or to one
- 0:17approach. For starters, I keep a lot of balls
- 0:20in the air because most deals fall out, no matter
- 0:23how promising they seem at first. In addition,
- 0:26Once I've made a deal, I always come up with
- 0:28at least a half dozen approaches to making it
- 0:31work. Because anything can happen, even to the
- 0:34best laid out plans. Here, Trump suggests to
- 0:37basically develop a pipeline for all the projects,
- 0:41all the deals, all the ambitions you have to
- 0:45plant multiple seeds and let them flourish, knowing
- 0:50that not all of them will perhaps see the light
- 0:53of day. And that's why you shouldn't get too
- 0:56hung up on a single option. Trump is going to
- 1:00list a few examples in his real estate career.
- 1:07For example, if I hadn't gotten the approvals
- 1:10I wanted for Trump Tower, I could always have
- 1:12built an office tower and done just fine. If
- 1:15I'd been turned down for licensing in Atlantic
- 1:17City, I could have sold the site I'd assembled
- 1:20to another casino operator at a good profit.
- 1:23Perhaps the best example I can give is the first
- 1:26deal I made in Manhattan. I got an option to
- 1:29purchase the Penn Central rail yards at West
- 1:3134th Street. My original proposal was to build
- 1:34middle -income housing on the site with government
- 1:36financing. Unfortunately, the city began to have
- 1:40financial problems and money for public housing
- 1:42suddenly dried up. I didn't spend a lot of time
- 1:45feeling sorry for myself. Instead, I switched
- 1:48to my second option and began promoting the site
- 1:51as ideal for a convention center. It took two
- 1:54years of pushing and promoting, but ultimately
- 1:57the city did designate my site for the convention
- 1:59center. And that's where it was built. Of course,
- 2:03if they hadn't chosen my site, I would have come
- 2:05up with a third approach. Here, we've seen there
- 2:11were multiple options, both for Trump Tower,
- 2:15the site of his landmark residential tower that
- 2:20has retail. in it right on fifth avenue but we
- 2:25also get the glimpse of a very interesting building
- 2:29that became the jacob javits convention center
- 2:34right so this second example that trump cited
- 2:37right that he wanted to build affordable housing
- 2:41projects there but government money dried up
- 2:45and you had to switch the plan and became a convention
- 2:51center. This is, ladies and gentlemen, the very
- 2:55place where Hillary Clinton had staged in 2016
- 3:03her glass ceiling speech. The convention center
- 3:08is made with a lot of glass. And it's very, very
- 3:14significant to understand that. The venue where
- 3:18Hillary Clinton, the 2016 hopeful, gathered with
- 3:22her supporters was a venue created and built
- 3:26and thought by Donald Trump. This is a man who
- 3:32was delegitimized by the media, by so -called
- 3:36experts, by Hillary Clinton herself. And we see
- 3:42that where they're selling... supposed celebration
- 3:46takes place is a building that Trump imagined,
- 3:51created decades earlier. And this is kind of
- 3:55to suggest how much in advance Trump was in everything
- 4:00he did and how much of a cultural and business
- 4:05influence he had decades ago already. It's no
- 4:10surprise that Hillary Clinton was a guest. with
- 4:14her husband at Trump's wedding. So they were
- 4:18buddies, as Trump says. When he was donating
- 4:22to the Democrats, that was never an issue. Of
- 4:25course, when he wanted to step up for leadership,
- 4:28they saw, they had, they turned against him.
- 4:34And on that note, we know that Oprah Winfrey,
- 4:40asked very seriously of Trump if he considered
- 4:43running for office in the early 90s after he
- 4:46met with Ronald Reagan. And he said he might.
- 4:49So she was very serious about it. And even a
- 4:52decade later, it was around 2000, she thanked
- 4:57Trump for showing up at one of her shows and
- 5:02wrote him a thank you note saying they should
- 5:07run for office together. and that she would be
- 5:10his VP, as if that's not a stamp of approval.
- 5:14And finally, two decades later, around 2018,
- 5:19on the David Rubenstein show hosted on Bloomberg,
- 5:22Oprah Winfrey is asked if she would think of
- 5:27running for president. And she answers, I never
- 5:31thought about it, but now that I saw that Trump
- 5:33made it, I'm like, oh. So she's acting like she's
- 5:39surprised that he ever won or that he even considered
- 5:43running, that it wasn't a natural fit for the
- 5:49office, which is completely false, as you know,
- 5:51because she felt it was a natural fit in the
- 5:56early 90s and the early 2000s. It's just, unfortunately,
- 6:01a large segment of the population that Trump
- 6:03supported. In his early days, we know from various
- 6:08speeches that Trump was an early backer of Chuck
- 6:12Schumer. And he said it publicly at one of the
- 6:17charity dinners before the 2024 election. He
- 6:23said it publicly right next to him that he was
- 6:27the first supporter. And unfortunately, that's
- 6:30how things... But here, the lesson, I digress.
- 6:35The lesson here is maximize your options. Whether
- 6:39it's a career choice, whether it's a choice of
- 6:44what skills to get, you want to have the broadest
- 6:47before specializing. Really aim wide, try to
- 6:52have a lot of different possibilities in your
- 6:57future. Maybe don't go all in with a single deal,
- 7:04single client. You want to have multiple options,
- 7:10pretty much. And this is also, we've seen it
- 7:14earlier, when Trump wanted to have certain permits
- 7:21before going ahead, making capital commitments,
- 7:27right? And that's the previous episode we did
- 7:32when we saw that Hilton had another approach
- 7:36and it ended up having to fire sale their assets
- 7:39because they had no license to operate in Atlantic
- 7:44City. So do things sequentially. Think ahead.
- 7:51Try to plant seeds that will open options for
- 7:55you. Another element of the deal is to maximize
- 8:02your options. And maybe a final note on this,
- 8:07you'll notice that Trump will not commit, whether
- 8:13it's to a journalist's question or to another
- 8:18stakeholder's question, he will not, when he
- 8:24doesn't have a certain answer, It seems quite
- 8:30natural with many other politicians or other,
- 8:33let's say, professionals in the business or political
- 8:44spheres or, you know, so -called experts. They
- 8:49have no qualms about saying some things for certain
- 8:53when it's just to be absolutely not true. The
- 8:59subject matter is vague. So he doesn't rule out
- 9:03options because he knows that he does not know
- 9:10the future. And he's wise enough to acknowledge
- 9:14that things can take many different paths. And
- 9:18depending on which path happens to be taken,
- 9:23there could be a different set of reactions or
- 9:26appropriate measures. And this just echoes that
- 9:30philosophy of maximizing your options. So hope
- 9:34you learned something with this one. And thanks
- 9:36for listening.
