Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Parul Sood: Auckland Council Deputy Director of Resilience and Infrastructure on e-waste in rubbish bins
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Yeah, rubbish tracks are blowing up. Well, blowing up might
- 0:02Speaker 1: be an exaggeration, but there have been loads of fires
- 0:04Speaker 1: and rubbish and recycling trucks nine over the past little while.
- 0:08Speaker 1: On top of that at Ukhan's recycling facility that has
- 0:11Speaker 1: one or two small fires every single week. So Auckland
- 0:15Speaker 1: Council Deputy Director of Resilience and Infrastructure Paru Sued joins
- 0:20Speaker 1: me right now.
- 0:21Speaker 2: Hello, Pero, good morning Andrew.
- 0:23Speaker 1: What's blowing up?
- 0:25Speaker 2: Oh my god, it's all the wrong items that people
- 0:28Speaker 2: are putting into those trucks and they are predominantly lithemain
- 0:32Speaker 2: batteries that we've got so many of them in our
- 0:34Speaker 2: devices that are blowing up.
- 0:36Speaker 1: Yeah, so give us a list what's blown up? What's
- 0:39Speaker 1: the stuff we shouldn't be putting in the in the
- 0:41Speaker 1: rubbish truck.
- 0:43Speaker 2: So one thing to clearly remember is what you should
- 0:45Speaker 2: be putting into your recycling bins. It is meant for
- 0:49Speaker 2: packaging only that comes out of your kitchen, laundry and
- 0:52Speaker 2: your bathrooms and of course paper that you might have
- 0:55Speaker 2: and actually nothing else. What people are doing, or I
- 0:59Speaker 2: guess they're doing it by mistake or some of them
- 1:01Speaker 2: are thinking, is wish cycling. They're actually putting in things
- 1:05Speaker 2: like batteries. They're also putting in canisters that might have
- 1:10Speaker 2: got some gas in it, or LPT bottles or even
- 1:13Speaker 2: being found in it that can very easily, once damished,
- 1:17Speaker 2: catch fire.
- 1:18Speaker 1: Okay, so where should we put them? Like in December alone,
- 1:21Speaker 1: nearly six hundred laptops and over three hundred and twelve
- 1:23Speaker 1: vote batteries found their way into our recycling re facility,
- 1:27Speaker 1: which you just know that's bad. So where should those
- 1:29Speaker 1: people that put the laptops and batteries?
- 1:32Speaker 2: That's right, And if you think of just you know,
- 1:35Speaker 2: visit Council's website. There is a whole list of places
- 1:38Speaker 2: where you can take them, and it's an easy search
- 1:40Speaker 2: that you can find them. But there are also retailers
- 1:42Speaker 2: that actually offer you can take them to those retailers
- 1:46Speaker 2: and they'll take it back for free. So Mighty ten
- 1:48Speaker 2: and Bunnings for example, have battery drop offs. There are
- 1:51Speaker 2: a lot of organizations that do e waste collections and
- 1:54Speaker 2: take back as well. We also have some community recycling
- 1:58Speaker 2: centers that take eway back. So I guess just a
- 2:01Speaker 2: little bit of research on where you can take it
- 2:04Speaker 2: near your house is what you need to do to
- 2:07Speaker 2: be able to get these materials to the right place
- 2:09Speaker 2: and disposed of correctly.
- 2:11Speaker 1: So is there anything you can actually do to crack
- 2:12Speaker 1: down on the people who are either lazy or ignorant
- 2:15Speaker 1: to put this down or do you just have to
- 2:17Speaker 1: rely on community responsibility?
- 2:20Speaker 2: Hey, I think it's community responsibility is all on us
- 2:23Speaker 2: to actually do the right thing. We can look through
- 2:26Speaker 2: footage to see where it's come from. It's quite hard
- 2:28Speaker 2: to do that, but I think if we all just
- 2:31Speaker 2: think a little bit before we put that material in
- 2:34Speaker 2: the bin, I think that's the best way to go
- 2:36Speaker 2: because that's then preventing it from entering into the win
- 2:39Speaker 2: and we're not spending time wondering and policing it.
- 2:42Speaker 1: Pedal, Thank you so much for your time today produceud
- 2:45Speaker 1: from the organ Council. For more from earlier edition with
