Speaker 2: you hired that look perfect on paper but turned out
• 2:07
Speaker 2: to be a walking disaster. Uh, you know the missed
• 2:10
Speaker 2: background check that blew up in your face.
• 2:12
Speaker 4: Or you know the cuddling wasn't nustling cat?
• 2:17
Speaker 5: Yeah, every episode till we finished, Yeah, we.
• 2:21
Speaker 2: Find somebody who the shirtless nestling cat. Yeah, teams called
• 2:27
Speaker 2: the person who slipped past the background check with a
• 2:29
Speaker 2: surprise sister, or that hire who costs the company way
• 2:32
Speaker 2: too much money. Happens too too often. And yes, we'll
• 2:35
Speaker 2: change the names of the of of the folks. You
• 2:38
Speaker 2: can surely change the names of who you're talking about
• 2:40
Speaker 2: in the company. I will keep it anonymous. So that's
• 2:43
  Speaker 2: that's cool.
• 2:44
  Speaker 5: Want to really.
• 2:46
  Speaker 3: The team, Yeah.
• 2:48
Speaker 4: But surely give us juicy details, spill the tea. Yeah.
• 2:52
Speaker 3: Plus we do what well. Plus we're having people on
• 2:55
Speaker 3: like if you're if you want to come on the podcast,
• 2:57
Speaker 3: tell your story? Yeah, great story.
• 2:59
Speaker 2: Yeah if you if you submit a story and it's awesome,

• 3:04
Speaker 2: you and see if you want to come on this,
• 3:05
Speaker 2: come on the show and tell your story, and then
• 3:08
Speaker 2: you know, maybe read some other ones.
• 3:09
Speaker 4: That'd be cool too.
• 3:09
Speaker 2: We'd love to we'd love to have some great guests
• 3:12
Speaker 2: that have have had some bad hire fails and you know,
• 3:14
Speaker 2: really folks who are having huge successes too. You know,
• 3:17
Speaker 2: we we talked about this last episode. You know it's
• 3:20
Speaker 2: we we we talk about bad hires because we spend
• 3:23
Speaker 2: all of our time trying.
• 3:24
  Speaker 4: To prevent them.
• 3:24
Speaker 3: Yeah, and uh, and.
• 3:26
Speaker 2: So do all these folks in recruiting and CEOs and
• 3:29
Speaker 2: people who care about talent trying to find really great people,
• 3:33
Speaker 2: and but bad hires happen, and uh, you know, we
• 3:35
Speaker 2: we we literally go to work every day giving people
• 3:38
Speaker 2: the tools to make great hires, but they do happen
• 3:42
Speaker 2: and and so oftentimes it leads to tough consequences, and
• 3:46
Speaker 2: so we just tell stories about them and and remind.
• 3:49
Speaker 4: People that make you know the next time you make
• 3:51
  Speaker 4: a bad hire.
• 3:52
Speaker 2: Uh, you know, it's not the end of the world,
• 3:55
Speaker 2: but you know there's things you can do to prevent it.
• 3:57
Speaker 3: So it's funny when it's not your company. That's what
• 4:00
Speaker 3: we tell them. Yeah, if it was all about.
• 4:03
Speaker 4: And it's funny afterwards, maybe, you know, maybe depending on
• 4:06
Speaker 4: how bad it is. Yeah, I mean I talk to
• 4:10
Speaker 4: recruiters all the time. Sometimes you know, it's just learning.
• 4:13
Speaker 2: You know, you learn well, you know you should have
• 4:16
Speaker 2: picked up there were some red flags or something you
• 4:17
Speaker 2: should have picked up on.
• 4:18
Speaker 3: And sometimes it's a freak accident like last episode, somebody
• 4:22
Speaker 3: attacked by a squirrel, you know. So, I mean, I
• 4:25
Speaker 3: don't know, it could happen to anybody. It's funny and
• 4:28
Speaker 3: telling up to see you.
• 4:29
  Speaker 5: I don't work because of a squirrel attack. I want
• 4:32
  Speaker 5: to get mine.
• 4:35
Speaker 6: Don't use that one on kids.
• 4:36
Speaker 2: All right, here we go, so I'll start here. I
• 4:40
Speaker 2: haven't read these, so these are this is my first time.
• 4:43
Speaker 3: Yes, good good luckly stories.
• 4:45
Speaker 4: So I worked with special needs kids. I don't even
• 4:48
Speaker 4: like the way that starts. So I worked with special
• 4:50
  Speaker 4: needs kids.
• 4:50
Speaker 2: We heard someone said to one of the kids, if
• 4:53
Speaker 2: you don't shut up, I'll cut your tongue off. And okay,
• 4:59
Speaker 2: this is really bad. It was apparently the guy's first
• 5:03
Speaker 2: day on the job.
• 5:04
Speaker 5: He said that to the kid. Apparently, so on the
• 5:08
  Speaker 5: first day.
• 5:10
Speaker 3: Oh my gosh, did he have a background check. I
• 5:15
  Speaker 3: just don't understand.
• 5:17
Speaker 2: Yeah, that's it, just it was the guy's first life.
• 5:20
Speaker 2: I'm assuming first and last day. But you know, in
• 5:24
Speaker 2: all these companies with vulnerable populations, there's like people who
• 5:27
Speaker 2: serve kids and and patients just super super sharp, really
• 5:32
Speaker 2: tough vetting has to happen.
• 5:35
  Speaker 4: You got it.
• 5:35
Speaker 2: You gotta run, you know, super in depth background checks.
• 5:38
Speaker 2: But it's just not worth it.
• 5:39
Speaker 3: Like we'll come across companies who just don't have any
• 5:42
Speaker 3: kind of screen process at all. Like we'll learn like, oh, yeah,
• 5:45
Speaker 3: we hire hundreds of people a year whatever how many
• 5:48
Speaker 3: people and there's no vetting at all. Just whoever, in
• 5:51
Speaker 3: especially when it's working with kids, working with people like that,
• 5:53
  Speaker 3: that's insane.
• 5:55
Speaker 2: Yeah, you know a lot of times the the folks
• 5:58
Speaker 2: who are responsible for her, and it's esp Actually, some
• 6:00
Speaker 2: of the smaller organizations that do big.
• 6:02
Speaker 4: Care and things like that, even home health.
• 6:04
Speaker 2: Care for elderly is they become smaller companies and they're
• 6:10
Speaker 2: less sophisticated and how they think and know about background checks.
• 6:13
Speaker 2: And it's really really tough because then you know they
• 6:17
Speaker 2: don't know, you know that they're not screening well, you know,
• 6:22
Speaker 2: somebody sold them something told them it was great, and
• 6:24
Speaker 2: they don't have any idea, and so you know, certainly
• 6:28
  Speaker 2: encourage folks to.
• 6:29
Speaker 4: Yeah, it's one of the reasons I started that that course.
• 6:32
Speaker 2: Our masterclass was to masterclass on it was to just
• 6:35
Speaker 2: make people smarter, because you got to be you gotta
• 6:37
Speaker 2: be smart when it comes to this background screening. All right,
• 6:39
Speaker 2: here's another one. I hope this one doesn't hurt my
• 6:42
Speaker 2: heart as much as the last one. I worked in
• 6:45
Speaker 2: a university library. They hired a new librarian to manage
• 6:49
Speaker 2: the cataloging department. Apparently, he sat in his office for
• 6:53
Speaker 2: his ninety day probation period and did nothing, not one thing.
• 7:00
Speaker 2: He played on his computer all day. There were piles
• 7:03
Speaker 2: of books all around his desk that had never been touched.
• 7:06
Speaker 2: He was a brand new grad with a fresh master's degree.
• 7:10
Speaker 2: He refused to leave the building when he was fired,
• 7:13
Speaker 2: and campus police had to escort him out. He torched
• 7:17
Speaker 2: his entire career in ninety days.
• 7:21
Speaker 3: So he spent ninety days doing nothing, and they're like
• 7:23
  Speaker 3: it's time to leave. It's like, I'm not leaving. I
• 7:25
Speaker 3: got my games to play. So that that's the whole story.
• 7:28
Speaker 4: I stayed ninety one. It's too late.
• 7:29
Speaker 3: Yeah, that's right. I passed my ninety days. I'm in Yeah,
• 7:32
  Speaker 3: that's crazy.
• 7:33
Speaker 7: I know, the ninety days where you're supposed to impress
• 7:36
Speaker 7: your employer, like not just screw it all up.
• 7:39
Speaker 2: Yeah yeah, yeah, I'm just shocked that d would like
• 7:44
Speaker 2: get out of grad school and like you just should
• 7:46
Speaker 2: be like super eager to go.
• 7:47
Speaker 3: Crushing to go, crush hard, worked hard in college, worked hard,
• 7:50
Speaker 3: and for his masters, he gets into his jobs like
• 7:53
Speaker 3: time to relax, professional student.
• 7:56
  Speaker 5: Did nobody notice.
• 8:01
Speaker 4: Like how do you how do you make it ninety days?
• 8:04
  Speaker 3: Yeah, you're done. That's a long time. I mean think
• 8:06
Speaker 3: about day forty five. If somebody would have said.
• 8:08
Speaker 5: Something, yeah, well maybe they didn't do an education clarification.
• 8:15
Speaker 4: Apparently is apparently at Master.
• 8:19
Speaker 3: Made the holding up.
• 8:20
Speaker 2: Well, you know again, it's not sometimes just not about
• 8:23
Speaker 2: skills or the degree. You know, a lot of times
• 8:25
Speaker 2: it's about you know, the soft skills or you know,
• 8:29
Speaker 2: the type of person you are that makes that decides
• 8:32
Speaker 2: whether or not you're going to be a great employee.
• 8:35
  Speaker 6: You know.
• 8:36
Speaker 2: I love talking to recruiters and how they how they
• 8:39
Speaker 2: ask questions and and interview folks to try to tease
• 8:42
Speaker 2: that out of people and get that information from them
• 8:44
Speaker 2: so they can try to make an assessment, you know,
• 8:47
  Speaker 2: because it's easy to assess skills, that's super that's that's
• 8:50
Speaker 2: that's super easy. Harder harder to do. It's harder to
• 8:52
Speaker 2: find the hard stuff that really creates a lot of
• 8:55
Speaker 2: the problems that we read about in these bad hearts.
• 8:58
  Speaker 2: All right, another here, I'm a cant. I had a
• 9:01
Speaker 2: candidate running late for an interview, parked in the Employee
• 9:06
Speaker 2: of the Month parking space.
• 9:08
Speaker 3: Give it to himself, that's me.
• 9:12
Speaker 2: As the employee was returning to lunch, she ended up
• 9:15
Speaker 2: in a fistfight in the parking.
• 9:17
Speaker 3: That's my spot. Which one? Which one is the bad high?
• 9:23
  Speaker 6: Yeah?
• 9:24
  Speaker 3: Yeah?
• 9:24
  Speaker 6: Is it?
• 9:24
Speaker 5: The current best employee of the month or is it
• 9:26
  Speaker 5: the new one?
• 9:27
Speaker 3: Right I should be employe of the month.
• 9:30
  Speaker 4: I don't know.
• 9:30
Speaker 2: If I if I had an employee the month who
• 9:32
Speaker 2: ran into a potential new hire and they're like, I
• 9:35
Speaker 2: just couldn't find a parking space. I was running late,
• 9:36
Speaker 2: I would hope that, like my employee the month would
• 9:39
Speaker 2: be like rock on, it's okay, it's totally good, let's
• 9:41
Speaker 2: get you in here. Scrap like, ay, bro, that's my spot.
• 9:47
Speaker 4: You know. That's kind of like the opposite reaction I
• 9:50
  Speaker 4: would want.
• 9:52
Speaker 3: I just thought it was first come, first served, Like, oh,
• 9:54
Speaker 3: whoever gets this spot first, they're the employee of the
• 9:56
Speaker 3: month music, Yeah I win.
• 10:03
Speaker 2: Speaking of fist fights, another one. Okay, I worked in retail.
• 10:08
Speaker 2: I watched someone get hired for I watched someone get
• 10:12
Speaker 2: hired for back room, come to orientation, come to orientation,
• 10:17
Speaker 2: go outside on a smoke break, and immediately threaten someone
• 10:21
Speaker 2: with their new box cutter.
• 10:26
Speaker 5: Well, that's worse than what could happen.
• 10:28
Speaker 2: What could happen on a smoke break that makes you
• 10:30
Speaker 2: want to Yeah all right? They got taken out of
• 10:33
Speaker 2: the store and cuffs and didn't even make it to
• 10:36
Speaker 2: lunch on their first day.
• 10:39
Speaker 3: It's always first days.
• 10:40
  Speaker 5: Yeah, first day.
• 10:43
Speaker 3: At least they found the problems early on. He couldn't
• 10:45
  Speaker 3: give me.
• 10:46
Speaker 4: This is the ones that people write about more. You know.
• 10:48
Speaker 2: Others are like slow, slow burn bad hires.
• 10:54
Speaker 4: That's what it was.
• 10:55
Speaker 5: I cut somebody that's crazy. Let me use your lighter.
• 10:59
Speaker 6: Not okay, nah, not even fight box better fight.
• 11:07
Speaker 4: I think it's worse. Yeah, that's kind of worse than
• 11:11
  Speaker 4: I don't. I don't know.
• 11:12
Speaker 2: Maybe that maybe my employee of the month out there
• 11:14
Speaker 2: going to fist fight the parking lot over someone that
• 11:16
Speaker 2: I don't know, box cutter. Okay, last last one here.
• 11:19
Speaker 2: We we hired and fired a manager under two weeks
• 11:24
  Speaker 2: because his linked.
• 11:25
Speaker 3: Long what they made a little bit longer.
• 11:28
Speaker 2: Than yeah, well yeah, because his LinkedIn profile was public
• 11:34
Speaker 2: and he was actively commenting on multiple posts about how
• 11:38
Speaker 2: he was still looking for a job. Oh yeah, and
• 11:41
Speaker 2: it only taking this one for temporary benefits to hold
• 11:45
Speaker 2: him over until he found a better one.
• 11:47
Speaker 3: So we're seeing that much detail in his comments. So
• 11:51
Speaker 3: I'm just like, hey, I'm looking for the.
• 11:52
Speaker 2: Job, and also I'm going to start actively monitoring the
• 11:55
Speaker 2: LinkedIn of everyone we hire, at least for two weeks afterwards.
• 11:58
Speaker 3: I don't understand that because I'll see on link then
• 12:00
Speaker 3: people will be in a job and they have like
• 12:03
Speaker 3: their open to work thing, like yeah, yeah, I'm actively
• 12:06
Speaker 3: looking to get out of this job right now, and
• 12:08
  Speaker 3: it's like.
• 12:09
Speaker 6: Your boss, I'm working, but I'm also open to work.
• 12:12
  Speaker 3: Yeah.
• 12:13
Speaker 2: Well you know, I think, well, it's every it's every
• 12:15
Speaker 2: company's responsibility to make to create an environment where people
• 12:20
Speaker 2: want to work there.
• 12:21
Speaker 6: Right be where I'm close to quitting. I might be
• 12:25
Speaker 6: quitting in the next.
• 12:27
Speaker 4: Oh you're saying that. Are you saying that to me? Okay?
• 12:32
  Speaker 3: That was the.
• 12:33
Speaker 4: Seriously, everyone just got quiet as them.
• 12:38
Speaker 6: I announced sas is not say open to work. I'm
• 12:42
Speaker 6: just assuming that if someone did say that that, they're like,
• 12:48
Speaker 6: I might be quitting soon.
• 12:50
Speaker 2: Well, I mean, I just want to have a place
• 12:52
  Speaker 2: where people don't do that, right, That's that's a responsibility.
• 12:54
Speaker 2: Have a good culture, you know, where people want to
• 12:56
Speaker 2: stay there. All right, So before we move on to
• 12:59
Speaker 2: more stories, we've got a sponsor message. So this podcast
• 13:03

• 13:39
Speaker 4: All right, pass it to Nathan and it says, what
• 13:43
Speaker 4: do you got, Nathan?
• 13:44
Speaker 3: All Right? I got a couple quick ones today, you
• 13:46
Speaker 3: guys ready, Yeah, Yeah, I got Chicki's time. I had
• 13:50
Speaker 3: a co worker get mad at a resident and he
• 13:53
Speaker 3: punched him several times in the face. He was escort
• 13:55
Speaker 3: out in handcuffs, and I think he'd been working for
• 13:58
  Speaker 3: about three months.
• 13:59
Speaker 4: Wow, what the word resident? Like?
• 14:03
Speaker 3: I think this person worked at like an apartment complex. Okay,
• 14:06
Speaker 3: And so imagine you're at the first because.
• 14:08
Speaker 2: When I heard resident, I immediately thought like of like doctor,
• 14:12
Speaker 2: like like elder care kind of.
• 14:13
Speaker 4: I was like, oh my god, either way is bad? Well,
• 14:16
Speaker 4: either way is bad?
• 14:18
Speaker 3: Well, face punching is kind of going south. Yeah, but
• 14:21
Speaker 3: I think this person literally worked at the apartment complex
• 14:23
Speaker 3: and it's like one of the people who live there. Yeah,
• 14:26
Speaker 3: like I'm out at you, let me punch in the face.
• 14:27
Speaker 3: There's a lot of people just resort the violence right away, which,
• 14:30
Speaker 3: as we know, it's never the answer, right, Okay, next
• 14:33
Speaker 3: one a little bit less violent, but probably even worse.
• 14:36
Speaker 3: I worked with lady who clipped her fingernails at her
• 14:39
Speaker 3: desk with scissors. She was a tempt and she did
• 14:42
Speaker 3: not last two days.
• 14:44
Speaker 5: How long were her nails? Do you use scissors?
• 14:46
Speaker 3: Long enough for scissors? I guess she's a temp, so
• 14:50
Speaker 3: just a bad tempt.
• 14:52
Speaker 2: Yeah, there's there's gotta be some we gotta put together,
• 14:56
Speaker 2: like a class for workplace attice or something. And then
• 14:59
Speaker 2: it's like people should.
• 15:00
Speaker 6: Well these are things that you think you don't have
• 15:02
Speaker 6: to put in the handbook, but yeah.
• 15:05
Speaker 3: They're cutting. Yeah, yeah, we can also start several times.
• 15:09
Speaker 4: Don't leave your nail trimmings on your desk.
• 15:11
Speaker 3: We started the bad hire, the bad temp, the sad hire.
• 15:14
Speaker 7: We got like a yeah, yeah, thank you guys for
• 15:17
  Speaker 7: inspiring us.
• 15:18
  Speaker 3: Exactly. That's all I got.
• 15:20
Speaker 4: Anyway, who's up? Who else? Are you ready? Yeah? Gom,
• 15:23
Speaker 4: what's up? What did you find this week that you loved?
• 15:27
Speaker 6: I start with a couple of short ones, and then
• 15:28
Speaker 6: I'll end on like a longer one. Here we go.
• 15:32
Speaker 6: I once had an employee who is seemingly a reformed convict,
• 15:37
Speaker 6: but ended up later robbing a bank and tried to
• 15:40
Speaker 6: take the money north into Canada. I'm in Colorado. He
• 15:44
Speaker 6: took two of our employees with them, and they were
• 15:46
Speaker 6: caught about halfway through Wyholming and honesty ended up being
• 15:50
Speaker 6: funny because he signed his real name on the bank's
• 15:53
Speaker 6: welcome booklet before he proceeded to rob them.
• 15:57
Speaker 5: Here's my autograph, shows a good time to be honest
• 16:00
Speaker 5: when I get arrested here in a little bit.
• 16:03
  Speaker 4: Oh my god.
• 16:06
Speaker 2: Well, I believe in second chances. Big believer in second chances.
• 16:11
Speaker 3: I feel like most people, like you know, get out
• 16:13
Speaker 3: of the country, but like not always to Canada. I
• 16:15
  Speaker 3: don't know.
• 16:15
Speaker 2: It's kind of random, is It's kind of I don't know,
• 16:18
Speaker 2: It's like something in movies, like We're headed to Canada,
• 16:20
  Speaker 2: Like Canada's gonna.
• 16:21
Speaker 4: Harbor you Canada Harbor's Argentina bank croppers. Yeah, we'll get
• 16:28
  Speaker 4: that story.
• 16:29
Speaker 2: Is He says he took two employees with him, So
• 16:31
Speaker 2: not only was this a bad hire, but he actually
• 16:33
Speaker 2: recruited people to his gang.
• 16:35
Speaker 6: Yeah, it looks like it's three bad hires.
• 16:38
Speaker 4: It turns out the one bad her.
• 16:40
Speaker 6: Yeah, I wish you would have given given a little
• 16:43
Speaker 6: bit more detail. I would like to know more about this.
• 16:48
  Speaker 5: That's all I got.
• 16:49
Speaker 4: Yeah, that's true story. That's crazy.
• 16:51
Speaker 3: I wonder how many of these are made up? Also,
• 16:54
Speaker 3: like for the contest, some of them don't just make
• 16:56
  Speaker 3: up a story.
• 16:57
Speaker 4: Yeah, seriously, we did a bet.
• 17:00
Speaker 2: Real life is like tough enough, you know, it's real.
• 17:04
Speaker 2: Real life is full of enough hiring disasters.
• 17:07
Speaker 3: Maybe for the winning story, we'll have to like go
• 17:09
Speaker 3: in and ask their co workers to verify, make sure
• 17:12
Speaker 3: they weren't just taken up.
• 17:13
Speaker 4: You got to dig in. Yeah, you guys think about that,
• 17:16
Speaker 4: Like submit it. Submit.
• 17:17
Speaker 2: The story's got to be real, you know, because it's
• 17:20
Speaker 2: gotta it's gotta, you know, forget to write ten tels
• 17:23
  Speaker 2: dark track.
• 17:23
Speaker 4: It's got to fit a little scrutiny.
• 17:25
Speaker 2: Yeah, otherwise we'll get a bunch of made up chat
• 17:28
Speaker 2: GPT stories from people, right, And that's what I don't want.
• 17:31
Speaker 3: That real and bad and real bad.
• 17:33
Speaker 6: Yeah, this one's really really short, but it's it's kind
• 17:37
Speaker 6: of funny. I had an employee quit because he was
• 17:40
Speaker 6: afraid of the dark. Oh but what's funny is that
• 17:45
Speaker 6: his job was he was a security guard on the
• 17:48
Speaker 6: night shift. Quit halfway through his shift.
• 17:55
Speaker 3: I was taking the day shift.
• 17:58
Speaker 5: I applied for the day shift. You're gonna make me
• 18:00
Speaker 5: go on night in the door.
• 18:05
Speaker 4: I was sick, right, that's what was good.
• 18:08
Speaker 2: I'm just I'm just in all because I'm like, well,
• 18:11
Speaker 2: he's an adult, right, he's afraid.
• 18:13
Speaker 3: Of breaking down. Like the only thing you have to
• 18:16
Speaker 3: do to get past the security system is just turned
• 18:18
Speaker 3: the lights off and then you're all right, Like, I'm good.
• 18:21
Speaker 4: Let you Roberts says, turn the lights off. He leaves.
• 18:27
Speaker 3: Oh my gosh, you're all ready to the next one.
• 18:30
Speaker 4: You find funny ones.
• 18:32
Speaker 5: I like the funny ones.
• 18:33
Speaker 6: This one is a little bit longer.
• 18:36
  Speaker 4: Here we go.
• 18:37
Speaker 6: I was a supervisor for a high end quote unquote
• 18:40
Speaker 6: high end retail store that we were preparing for grand opening.
• 18:44
Speaker 6: We had hired one guy, we'll call him Tom. Tom
• 18:48
Speaker 6: that was in his early that was in his early
• 18:51
Speaker 6: to mid twenties. Over the course of a couple of weeks,
• 18:55
Speaker 6: I noticed that I barely ever saw Tom during his
• 18:58
Speaker 6: shifts after I sent him off to do something thing.
• 19:01
Speaker 6: One day, I sent him onto the sales floor with
• 19:03
Speaker 6: a cart of merchandise to stock and realize that it
• 19:06
Speaker 6: had been over twenty minutes and all the other employees
• 19:08
Speaker 6: had already been back two to three times. I was
• 19:12
Speaker 6: the only manager on, so I knew he didn't get
• 19:14
Speaker 6: sent to another task, so I asked if anyone had
• 19:16
Speaker 6: seen him. One girl turned to me and said, he's
• 19:19
Speaker 6: probably in his cubby, and then proceeded to show me
• 19:21
Speaker 6: where it was. Apparently Tom had created a cubby for
• 19:25
Speaker 6: himself about three to four feet wide behind some old
• 19:29
Speaker 6: shelving units. He had stolen a heated blanket, pillow, and
• 19:34
Speaker 6: various food items off of the sales floor, and that's
• 19:36
Speaker 6: where he had been hanging out for the majority of
• 19:38
Speaker 6: his shifts for over a month, checking in with various
• 19:41
Speaker 6: managers at thirty to forty five minute intervals so as
• 19:45
Speaker 6: to be seen by somebody. This was his third or
• 19:48
Speaker 6: fourth offense, so he fired him. He proceeded to rip
• 19:52
Speaker 6: his shirt in half and start crying while screaming why
• 19:57
  Speaker 6: over eaking.
• 19:58
Speaker 3: My cobby at the top his lungs.
• 20:01
Speaker 6: We then escorted him out of the building, where he
• 20:05
Speaker 6: continued screaming and crying while beating his chest what and
• 20:09
Speaker 6: spitting on the windows of the building.
• 20:13
Speaker 3: Just keeps going, Yeah, yeah, yeah, Tom, what's going on?
• 20:21
  Speaker 3: That's pretty good?
• 20:22
Speaker 5: That is that the girl was like, he's probably in this.
• 20:26
Speaker 2: Covey, right, just co workers find bad hires so much
• 20:33
Speaker 2: faster than managers, don't they. I guess it was just
• 20:35
Speaker 2: like this guy is terrible. They just no one says anything,
• 20:40
Speaker 2: just keeps on going. You know, it's like, Okay, we're
• 20:43
Speaker 2: just gonna let him sleep over there.
• 20:44
Speaker 3: And spitting spitting on the window. That's crazy. That just
• 20:47
Speaker 3: it just kept going.
• 20:48
Speaker 4: I don't know the whole hulk move of ripping his
• 20:51
Speaker 4: shirt in half, beating on his chair. Tom, I have
• 20:57
Speaker 4: one more, all right, okay.
• 21:00
Speaker 5: Also kind of long.
• 21:01
Speaker 6: It's a little bit longer than the last one, but
• 21:03
Speaker 6: not too long. This one's actually local Charlotte way.
• 21:11
Speaker 5: It doesn't say it anyways, but a.
• 21:13
Speaker 6: Few years ago, I was a kitchen manager at a
• 21:15
Speaker 6: place in Charlotte, North Carolina. I don't know if it
• 21:19
Speaker 6: is common knowledge or not, but drug use in kitchens
• 21:21
Speaker 6: is very common and most of the time accepted that.
• 21:26
Speaker 6: Being said, I had a line cook who came in
• 21:31
Speaker 6: who was on drugs. He came to me, explained the situation, apologized,
• 21:36
Speaker 6: asked if he could run somewhere and come in a
• 21:38
Speaker 6: little later in quote unquote better shape. It was slow
• 21:42
Speaker 6: and most of the prep was done, so I said
• 21:44
Speaker 6: he could have an extra hour. He comes back forty
• 21:48
Speaker 6: five minutes later and has calmed down, stopped shaking, and
• 21:52
Speaker 6: had a grin on his face. He was one of
• 21:55
Speaker 6: my better line cooks, so I was glad to see
• 21:57
Speaker 6: that I didn't have to reprimand him. We begin then
• 22:00
Speaker 6: service and everything is running smoothly when I look across
• 22:03
Speaker 6: the line and he begins to look as if he's
• 22:05
Speaker 6: falling asleep while working the grill. He assured me that
• 22:08
Speaker 6: he was fine. Fifteen minutes goes by and I see
• 22:11
Speaker 6: him collapse, landing with his face and arm on the grill.
• 22:15
Speaker 6: He did not wake up. I run across the kitchen
• 22:18
Speaker 6: and push him off, skin literally melted to.
• 22:21
Speaker 3: The what skin melted to the grill?
• 22:24
Speaker 6: He hits the ground. He wakes up and simply says, oh, shoot, chef,
• 22:28
Speaker 6: may I go to the hospital.
• 22:31
Speaker 3: So I've been cooked? Please go to the hospital.
• 22:34
Speaker 5: That's not all okay, gosh, the smell was horrific.
• 22:39
Speaker 6: On a Friday night, we closed the restaurant, opened all
• 22:41
Speaker 6: the doors and windows and cleaned up the cleaned up
• 22:44
Speaker 6: the mess. As I'm doing my order for the next day,
• 22:47
Speaker 6: around ten pm, he comes back in bandaged up and says, Chef,
• 22:51
Speaker 6: can I help with anything? Astonished, I couldn't reply, and
• 22:56
Speaker 6: he continued to explain that he went to his dealer's
• 23:00
Speaker 6: house and got a lot of said drug, snorted it
• 23:06
Speaker 6: so he could calm down and just knotted out. And
• 23:10
Speaker 6: then he says, but it's okay. They gave me morphine
• 23:13
Speaker 6: so I can still work, and I'm dumb, so don't
• 23:15
Speaker 6: worry about workers comp I.
• 23:17
Speaker 3: Just wanted to have a job, He's persistent.
• 23:21
Speaker 4: Well, I thought he was.
• 23:22
Speaker 2: You know how they in the kitchens they call you know, chef.
• 23:25
Speaker 2: They used the whole chef. Yeah, so, you know, I
• 23:27
  Speaker 2: thought it.
• 23:28
Speaker 4: Was stunning that after he woke up from being cooked
• 23:31
Speaker 4: on the grill, he wakes up and says, chef, chef.
• 23:34
  Speaker 3: You know, chef.
• 23:35
  Speaker 5: Here's the end.
• 23:37
Speaker 6: Two weeks later, he returned to work sober and hasn't
• 23:39
Speaker 6: touched a drug or had a drink since I arranged,
• 23:43
Speaker 6: so that his hospital bills were paid, but he had
• 23:45
Speaker 6: no paid time off, and then at the bottom says
• 23:50
Speaker 6: after he like stopped working there. Whatever, it's been about
• 23:53
Speaker 6: three years. He contacted him years later, this guy he
• 23:57
Speaker 6: met his now fiance.
• 23:59
Speaker 4: And tell me it's a good story.
• 24:01
Speaker 6: Okay, expect And they're now expecting a daughter in a
• 24:04
Speaker 6: few months. And was just called about becoming the Sioux
• 24:07
Speaker 6: chef at a restaurant opening in Atlanta.
• 24:10
  Speaker 3: Wow.
• 24:11
Speaker 6: And he said that he moved there because Charlotte is
• 24:14
Speaker 6: too dangerous for him.
• 24:16
Speaker 4: Wow, Charlotte story it actually, you know, that's actually heartwarming.
• 24:23
Speaker 4: I actually like the story.
• 24:26
Speaker 2: It's like a bad hire turns the hire to risky
• 24:30
Speaker 2: hired a good hire to then.
• 24:33
Speaker 4: Like, I love it.
• 24:35
Speaker 5: I love that at the end of the tunnel sometimes
• 24:38
  Speaker 5: I love that.
• 24:39
Speaker 4: And good good for good for the chef for keep
• 24:42
Speaker 4: hanging on to the dude realizing the checking in with
• 24:45
Speaker 4: him later. Yeah do that that chefs Like the.
• 24:48
Speaker 2: Guy who runs that was like really a good dude
• 24:51
Speaker 2: on the podcast, right, I mean, so the bad had
• 24:54
Speaker 2: a you know, the guy had a bad a bad
• 24:56
  Speaker 2: day local.
• 24:57
Speaker 5: Maybe I can find him, yeah.
• 24:59
Speaker 4: Figure out where he's working.
• 25:00
Speaker 3: Yeah, man, that's crazy.
• 25:02
Speaker 4: I love that story.
• 25:03
Speaker 3: Oh I got yeah that actually had.
• 25:06
Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, I love the fact that it came around. Yeah,
• 25:12
  Speaker 4: so I have a couple.
• 25:13
Speaker 7: The first one actually is about a background check. So
• 25:16
Speaker 7: we're going to get into love to hear it, love
• 25:17
Speaker 7: to hear it, and read it all right. I worked
• 25:19
Speaker 7: with a guy who got an awkward call from HR
• 25:21
Speaker 7: about six months after he'd started working because the results
• 25:25
Speaker 7: of his background check.
• 25:26
Speaker 5: Had to finally come back.
• 25:28
Speaker 4: Okay, six weeks to get a background check, I've heard.
• 25:31
Speaker 2: I've heard complaints about long background checks, like weeks, people
• 25:35
Speaker 2: complaining about days, days and weeks months.
• 25:39
  Speaker 5: Yeah.
• 25:40
  Speaker 4: Wow.
• 25:41
Speaker 7: It showed that he had an outstanding warrant from another
• 25:43
Speaker 7: state that he did not know about, so HR wanted
• 25:47
Speaker 7: to fire him on the spot as a matter of process.
• 25:50
Speaker 7: But he was really good at his job, so the
• 25:52
Speaker 7: boss lobbied for him. He was able to clear his situation.
• 25:55
Speaker 7: Of course, the way he told it, the whole thing
• 25:58
Speaker 7: had been a misunderstanding, but his version of the story
• 26:00
Speaker 7: seemed to be a lot of plot holes. In my
• 26:02
Speaker 7: honest opinion, they never would have hired him in the
• 26:06
Speaker 7: first place if the check.
• 26:07
Speaker 5: Had come back quickly.
• 26:09
Speaker 4: Wow. Yeah, So I don't know.
• 26:12
Speaker 7: It's kind of like a double edge stort because he
• 26:13
Speaker 7: ended up being a good hire Like, he was a
• 26:15
Speaker 7: good employee, but if they had screened him and saw
• 26:18
Speaker 7: that he had a warrant, they never would have hired
• 26:20
Speaker 7: him and they never would have known.
• 26:21
  Speaker 4: Yeah.
• 26:22
Speaker 2: But also it's warrants, right, that's just a rest. Yeah,
• 26:26
Speaker 2: so that's like a dicey subject actually. I mean, you know,
• 26:31
  Speaker 2: when someone's got a warrant doesn't mean they're guilty. It
• 26:33
Speaker 2: just means they're just going to get arrested.
• 26:35
Speaker 3: How do you get a warrant out for your arrest
• 26:38
Speaker 3: without knowing about it?
• 26:39
  Speaker 7: I don't know.
• 26:40
Speaker 6: Yeah, I was about to ask, like, what.
• 26:42
Speaker 5: Do you mean he didn't know?
• 26:43
Speaker 4: Yeah, I think it's probably possible.
• 26:45
Speaker 2: I mean, someone could allege something you did and you
• 26:47
Speaker 2: didn't know about it, right, And so in someplaces, no, no,
• 26:51
Speaker 2: you didn't do it, right, someone just names you and
• 26:54
Speaker 2: calls you out, and next time they make a warrant
• 26:56
Speaker 2: for your arrest, and then you know, there you go,
• 26:59
Speaker 2: or whatever whatever it might be. There's the important thing
• 27:02
Speaker 2: in those types of situations is to recognize that warrants
• 27:07
Speaker 2: aren't convictions and they are arrests. And he asked the question.
• 27:11
Speaker 2: You just asked, like, hey, how does how did that happen?
• 27:13
Speaker 2: And listen to them tell their story, and then you
• 27:16
Speaker 2: got to make a judgment call. As an HR pro recruit,
• 27:19
Speaker 2: you got to make a judgment call on whether or
• 27:20
Speaker 2: not you know you can live with that, you know,
• 27:23
Speaker 2: with the with the uncertainty, and a.
• 27:24
Speaker 4: Lot of a lot of times you can.
• 27:25
  Speaker 5: Yeah.
• 27:26
Speaker 3: So wait, what was the end?
• 27:28
Speaker 4: But what the big part of that story? Nathan is
• 27:30
Speaker 4: six months to get the background check.
• 27:32
Speaker 6: I guess they kept him on so I mean didn't
• 27:35
Speaker 6: say they fired him after they got the results.
• 27:36
Speaker 4: Don Oh it didn't Oh no, no, he said no.
• 27:39
Speaker 4: He says like he was doing good work, so the
• 27:41
Speaker 4: boss lobbied for him. Good for the good for the boss.
• 27:45
Speaker 5: Yeah, just so to keep them all right.
• 27:47
Speaker 7: This next one is really short and sweet, as little
• 27:49
Speaker 7: one sentence. This fire added urine to their ramin in
• 27:53
  Speaker 7: the break room.
• 27:53
Speaker 3: At lunch, What what what hold on?
• 27:58
  Speaker 4: To start over?
• 27:59
Speaker 5: The current employee added urine to their ramen, and the
• 28:02
Speaker 5: break room my launch.
• 28:04
Speaker 6: To their own ramen.
• 28:06
  Speaker 4: Yes, okay, I don't know.
• 28:09
  Speaker 5: I don't either. That's it. That's all I said. Yeah,
• 28:16
Speaker 5: I would like to know the end of that story
• 28:19
  Speaker 5: at the beginning.
• 28:19
Speaker 4: A new employee. Yeah, is it new employer or new habit?
• 28:24
  Speaker 3: Yeah?
• 28:24
Speaker 2: Just one sentence, all right, Okay, we'd always kunt Morgan
• 28:29
Speaker 2: for the like shock value, like.
• 28:32
Speaker 3: Short Yeah, no details, No, that was it?
• 28:35
  Speaker 6: No context?
• 28:36
  Speaker 4: All right?
• 28:36
Speaker 5: This one is years ago. I was doing a rehire.
• 28:39
Speaker 7: The guy stated he had left the company to take
• 28:41
Speaker 7: care of his dad, who had terminal cancer. He was
• 28:43
Speaker 7: gone about eighteen months. He refused to follow an application
• 28:46
Speaker 7: and a background check paperwork. He told me he didn't
• 28:49
Speaker 7: have to contest, he just wanted to use his previous paperwork.
• 28:52
Speaker 7: This was for an aircraft mechanic position. So once you're
• 28:55
Speaker 7: gone for over thirty days, you have to reapply and
• 28:57
Speaker 7: get a fresh background check, drug screen, et cetera.
• 29:01
  Speaker 4: Absolutely, Yep.
• 29:02
Speaker 7: He went to my boss who he was friends with,
• 29:04
Speaker 7: and previously my boss had stated that for the rehiring process,
• 29:08
Speaker 7: HR would take care of it, so he didn't need
• 29:10
Speaker 7: to worry about it.
• 29:11
Speaker 5: So I get him started.
