- 0:07This is Finding God at Work.
- 0:13In our current series, Imagining Work, we're asking
- 0:15a question, what story about work am I
- 0:18living in?
- 0:19And we're looking at key images of Scripture
- 0:21that can help us think about what story
- 0:23about work is God telling on the pages
- 0:25of Scripture.
- 0:26And today's image is servant.
- 0:33So, this is kind of a part two
- 0:34of the image of king from the last
- 0:37episode, and in the last episode we talked
- 0:39primarily about the perils of kingship, how not
- 0:42many of us should presume to take roles
- 0:44of authority because our heart is the hinge
- 0:47on which our influence turns.
- 0:50And the question is, how do we deal
- 0:51with that heart and the influence that we
- 0:53do all have?
- 0:54We all have our own little kingdom.
- 0:56Well, in many ways, servant is the antidote
- 0:59to the perils of kingship.
- 1:01The image of servant is what shows us
- 1:03how do we get to a place where
- 1:05we can exercise authority in a way that's
- 1:07safe and healthy and that serves God and
- 1:09other people.
- 1:11Now, when we hear the word servant, we
- 1:13might immediately jump to thinking about serving other
- 1:15people, and that is, of course, appropriate and
- 1:17a big component of what Scripture says about
- 1:19service.
- 1:20But the key thing about a servant is
- 1:23that the servant does their master's bidding.
- 1:26And this is hard for us to think
- 1:28about in an egalitarian society where we don't
- 1:30have servants per se anymore.
- 1:32But I was thinking of an analogy, and
- 1:34I thought of executive assistants.
- 1:36So I've been an executive assistant several times
- 1:38in my life.
- 1:39Most recently, I was executive assistant to president
- 1:42of a mortgage company named Kevin.
- 1:45And Kevin was great.
- 1:46He gave me a voice.
- 1:47He let me be creative.
- 1:48He let me use my gifts as a
- 1:51full-fledged human being in his eyes.
- 1:53But I understood that my job was not
- 1:55to do what Chris wanted to do.
- 1:58My job was to do what Kevin wanted
- 1:59to do.
- 2:00My job was to make the will of
- 2:01Kevin so.
- 2:03And that's what it means to be an
- 2:04assistant.
- 2:05It was to take his agenda and concretize
- 2:08it, make it realize, make it so.
- 2:10And that was fun and energizing.
- 2:13But it sometimes meant I had to give
- 2:14up what I wanted to do in order
- 2:16to do what Kevin wanted to do as
- 2:18a good assistant, as a good servant.
- 2:19It was my job to do my master's
- 2:21bidding, so to speak.
- 2:23And so that's actually the key thing is
- 2:25the relationship between the servant and the master.
- 2:28We're so used in our society to think
- 2:30about, oh, like, I'm going to serve on
- 2:32a team, but I still get to choose
- 2:34what team I serve on, or I'm going
- 2:35to go serve my neighbor by doing something
- 2:37for them.
- 2:37But that's still my free choice to do
- 2:39that.
- 2:40The locus of control is still in my
- 2:42hands.
- 2:43But the biblical concept of servanthood is different.
- 2:46The biblical concept of servanthood puts the locus
- 2:48of control in the hands of the master,
- 2:50and we have to respond to our master's
- 2:53will.
- 2:55So last time we looked at King Jeroboam
- 2:57and how he held more tightly to his
- 3:00authority than he held tightly to the Lord.
- 3:03He was willing to let go of the
- 3:05Lord in order to hold on to the
- 3:07authority that had been given to him.
- 3:09And this is a pitfall that many, many
- 3:12different people have fallen into.
- 3:13We see it tragically among pastoral leaders again
- 3:17and again.
- 3:18Just a day ago, I read another headline
- 3:20of a pastor of a church where there
- 3:22was vibrant ministry and the Holy Spirit was
- 3:24doing things, and yet now it's come to
- 3:26light.
- 3:26There's credible allegations.
- 3:28He sexually abused several women on his staff
- 3:30team over several years.
- 3:32And obviously, without even saying the name of
- 3:35this leader, you can probably think of four
- 3:37or five names of people who fit that
- 3:38bill just in pastoral leadership within the past
- 3:41several years.
- 3:42And what a crisis we seem to be
- 3:44in of people whose role in life, whose
- 3:48charge from the Lord is to shepherd other
- 3:50people into having Christlike hearts themselves again and
- 3:54again have somehow let go of life with
- 3:58God and embraced a duplicity and an abuse
- 4:01of power.
- 4:03There's more to why that is and how
- 4:05we can unpack that particular problem than we
- 4:08can get into right now.
- 4:09But suffice it to say, they're falling into
- 4:12the same trap as Jeroboam.
- 4:14In some way, they're holding more tightly to
- 4:16their authority or to their vision of what
- 4:17they have to accomplish than they're holding tightly
- 4:20to the Lord himself.
- 4:23And so when we think about how do
- 4:24we face this Jeroboam temptation, how do we
- 4:26avoid falling into that pitfall?
- 4:29Jesus is our guide.
- 4:31So we're going to go right to the
- 4:32example of Jesus in this episode, looking at
- 4:35Matthew chapter three.
- 4:36So in Matthew chapter three, we have a
- 4:39kingship temptation that Jesus faces and he offers
- 4:42a servant solution.
- 4:45So this is when Jesus is in the
- 4:47desert.
- 4:47He's preparing to start his ministry and the
- 4:49devil comes to him and tempts him three
- 4:51times and the third time kind of the
- 4:53devil's last shot to see if he can
- 4:54get to Jesus is a kingship temptation starting
- 4:58in verse eight.
- 5:00Again, the devil took him to a very
- 5:01high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms
- 5:03of the world and their splendor.
- 5:05All this I will give you, he said,
- 5:07if you will bow down and worship me.
- 5:11Jesus said to him, away from me, Satan,
- 5:13for it is written, worship the Lord your
- 5:14God and serve him only.
- 5:17Then the devil left him and angels came
- 5:19and attended him.
- 5:22So you see this dynamic here.
- 5:24The devil is saying, Jesus, you can have
- 5:26authority.
- 5:27I can give you authority.
- 5:28I can give you what you want, the
- 5:30kingdoms of the earth, because that is the
- 5:32destiny of Jesus to inherit the kingdoms of
- 5:34the earth.
- 5:34Is it not?
- 5:35The devil is promising Jesus what is rightly
- 5:37going to be under Jesus's purview and authority
- 5:42in the timing of God, but he's offering
- 5:44it the quick and easy way.
- 5:46He's offering it.
- 5:46If you just worship me right now, it'll
- 5:48be yours right away.
- 5:50And Jesus's response is not to argue the
- 5:53point about timing, but to say, it's about
- 5:56who you're worshiping.
- 5:57It's about who you're serving.
- 5:59He says, worship the Lord your God and
- 6:01serve him only.
- 6:03What gets Jesus out of this bind is
- 6:05his commitment to be a servant to his
- 6:07master, his father, the Lord.
- 6:12So even for Jesus, the only safe place
- 6:14for him to exercise his authority is under
- 6:17the authority of his father.
- 6:19That's where he goes for safety when he's
- 6:21tempted as I'm under the authority of my
- 6:23father.
- 6:23I will not do anything that violates the
- 6:26authority of my father.
- 6:27You would think if there was any human
- 6:29being whom we could trust to just do
- 6:30his own thing, it would be Jesus.
- 6:33And yet Jesus refuses to do that.
- 6:35Jesus refuses to just do his own thing.
- 6:37And we see this very clearly in John
- 6:39chapter five, starting in verse 19.
- 6:42I tell you the truth, the son can
- 6:44do nothing by himself.
- 6:45He can do only what he sees his
- 6:47father doing because whatever the father does, the
- 6:50son also does.
- 6:52And then a few verses later, I tell
- 6:55you the truth.
- 6:56A time is coming and has now come
- 6:58when the dead will hear the son of
- 7:00God and those who hear will live for
- 7:03as the father has life in himself.
- 7:05So he has granted the son to have
- 7:06life in himself and he has given him
- 7:09authority to judge because he is the son
- 7:11of man.
- 7:13And a few verses later by myself, I
- 7:15can do nothing.
- 7:17I judge only as I hear and my
- 7:18judgment is just for I seek not to
- 7:20please myself, but him who sent me.
- 7:25So these verses are really counterintuitive.
- 7:27If they weren't in the Bible, nobody would
- 7:29have thought to put them there because we
- 7:31would think, oh yeah, Jesus can do his
- 7:33own will and that's good because Jesus's will
- 7:35is good.
- 7:36But Jesus is saying that his aim is
- 7:38not to please himself, but to please the
- 7:40one who sent him, that even the authority
- 7:42to have life in himself is granted him
- 7:45by the father.
- 7:47And Jesus exercises that authority to raise the
- 7:49dead, to save sinners from sin and from
- 7:52death.
- 7:52As he said, a time is coming and
- 7:54has now come when the dead will hear
- 7:55the voice of the son of God and
- 7:57those who hear will live.
- 7:58It's beautiful poetic encapsulation of the entirety of
- 8:02Jesus's ministry, that that's what he does.
- 8:04He liberates us from death.
- 8:06And yet even that is grounded under the
- 8:09authority of the father.
- 8:10Jesus does nothing by himself.
- 8:12He only does what he sees the father
- 8:13doing.
- 8:14His entire ministry is under that banner of
- 8:16the father's authority.
- 8:19And so as we think about the kingship
- 8:21dynamic that we were looking at, again, the
- 8:23hinge that influence turns on is the heart.
- 8:26Well, that's true for Jesus's heart too.
- 8:28What's, what's the character of Jesus's heart?
- 8:31What is most true about his character?
- 8:34Well, it's obviously a character of love, but
- 8:36the first object of Jesus's love is his
- 8:38father, that he has a heart that chooses
- 8:42to do his father's will rather than his
- 8:44own will.
- 8:45He's a servant who does his master's bidding.
- 8:49And of course, the culmination of this is
- 8:51the garden of Gethsemane when Jesus prays, not
- 8:53my will, but yours be done.
- 8:56And so even though Jesus is king, he's
- 9:00a king with the heart of a servant,
- 9:02a heart that says yes to the master.
- 9:06And that's actually really good news for us
- 9:09in our lives and our vocation at work,
- 9:11because we have to think about, okay, how
- 9:14do I not fall into the Jeroboam temptation?
- 9:17How do I not become somebody who's going
- 9:20to exercise authority in a way that's destructive
- 9:22towards other people?
- 9:24Well, Jesus's solution for this is to give
- 9:27us a heart like his.
- 9:30If he's a king with the heart of
- 9:31a servant, he can take our hearts and
- 9:33change those to be more like his.
- 9:36And we see this elsewhere in scripture in
- 9:38the teaching of Jesus.
- 9:40Think about when in the parable of the
- 9:42talents or in the gospel of Luke, it's
- 9:44the 10 minas, minas like a monetary unit
- 9:47worth about three months wages.
- 9:50The king or the master entrusts the servants
- 9:52with money, then he goes away, the servants
- 9:55invest it or they don't.
- 9:57And then the king comes back.
- 9:59And in the gospel of Luke, there's this
- 10:00verse that puts it so poignantly in the
- 10:02way that the master responds to the servant.
- 10:05He says, well done, my good servant, because
- 10:08you have been trustworthy in a very small
- 10:10matter, take charge of 10 cities.
- 10:14So the master is looking at the character
- 10:16of the servant's heart and he's saying, ah,
- 10:18you were faithful, faithful as a character word.
- 10:21You were faithful in a small matter.
- 10:23Now, because I've seen your heart, because I've
- 10:25seen what it's like, I can trust you
- 10:27with more.
- 10:27I can put you over 10 cities.
- 10:31And that's a really astounding response that he
- 10:33was investing this money and now he's going
- 10:34to be like the ruler over 10 cities.
- 10:37And Dallas Willard, writer and philosopher whose work
- 10:40we often go to in this podcast, he
- 10:43has this great turn of phrase where he
- 10:45invites us to think about that.
- 10:46He says, perhaps it would be a good
- 10:48exercise for each of us to ask ourselves,
- 10:51really, how many cities could I now govern
- 10:53under God?
- 10:54If, for example, Baltimore or Liverpool were turned
- 10:56over to me with power to do what
- 10:58I want with it, how would things turn
- 11:00out?
- 11:01That's from Dallas's book, The Divine Conspiracy.
- 11:05And that's really the question.
- 11:07What's in our heart such that God could
- 11:09trust us with something?
- 11:11What kind of authority could God give us
- 11:13that we would actually do well with if
- 11:16we had the opportunity?
- 11:17And so Jesus's plan, because he has the
- 11:20heart of a servant, is to make our
- 11:22heart more like his, to turn his servants
- 11:25into the kind of people who can be
- 11:28kings, because their heart can bear the weight
- 11:32of authority well.
- 11:34And this is what we ultimately see promised
- 11:37in the book of Revelation, the 24 elders
- 11:40who kind of represent the leaders of the
- 11:42people of God.
- 11:42They are worshipping Jesus and then they're talking
- 11:45about what Jesus has done among the people.
- 11:47And they say, you have made them to
- 11:50be a kingdom and priests to serve our
- 11:53God, and they will reign on the earth.
- 11:57That's our destiny as followers of Jesus, is
- 12:00to reign on the earth.
- 12:02But how are we reigning?
- 12:03It says, a kingdom and priests to serve
- 12:06our God.
- 12:07We're reigning because we have the character of
- 12:09people who say yes to the master.
- 12:11We're reigning with the heart of a servant.
- 12:14We're being entrusted by God with more over
- 12:16time because he sees the character of our
- 12:19heart and because he's changing it.
- 12:22So what does that mean for our lives
- 12:23at work?
- 12:25Well, I think we can look at kind
- 12:26of two postures when it comes to our
- 12:28work and our career, and it's the Jeroboam
- 12:31posture, which is grasping tightly to authority, grasping
- 12:35tightly to what you think your work is
- 12:37going to give you, looking out for number
- 12:40one, pressing your own advantage, not trusting that
- 12:43God will take care of things unless you
- 12:44really make sure that they're taken care of.
- 12:48Versus an open handed posture of the servant,
- 12:51the servant who says, not my will, but
- 12:53yours be done, which requires the faith to
- 12:55trust that God will come through for us,
- 12:57that he will take care of us.
- 13:00And that's the posture of saying, I'm waiting
- 13:02for the King to come back and see
- 13:04what I've done, to see my heart, and
- 13:06then to entrust me with more, that God
- 13:09is doing his work in us while we
- 13:12carry out our daily tasks at work.
- 13:15And so really, ultimately, it's the posture of
- 13:17patience, of trusting that God is doing his
- 13:20work day by day, as we do ours,
- 13:23even if for the time, it seems like
- 13:24very little, that we would be faithful in
- 13:27that little, whatever it is, trusting that God
- 13:29will bring much in his time.
- 13:34Lord Jesus, you are the King with a
- 13:36servant's heart.
- 13:37We want you to make our hearts like
- 13:39yours.
- 13:41Show us how we can participate in what
- 13:43you are doing.
- 13:44Show us how we can trust that you
- 13:46are working in our work.
- 13:49And as you work in us, let us
- 13:51do our work with you.
- 13:54Thanks for listening.
